Firewall blocking Ethernet connection?

Q: Firewall blocking Ethernet connection?

So I just unpackaged my computer after moving back to the states (been in storage since Oct 1st). Connect everything and it doesn't recognize the Ethernet connection to the Internet. Call my isp to troubleshoot. They have me turn off my firewall in Windows. Right away my computer sees the connection and I connect to the Internet, turn firewall back on and remain connected. After updating my virus definitions I restart. When it comes back up, again no connection. I try the firewall off trick again this time nothing. Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a wireless laptop (HP Compaq), on Windows XP, with broadband internet at home and with NTL Netguard for the usual security measures (firewall, privacy etc).

In the last few days the internet connection has become slower and I am unable to access certain websites that previously had been fine. The following message comes up when I go through the diagnostic check -

"Windows did not detect any problems with your internet connection over HTTP or HTTPS, but was not able to make a successful connection over FTP. The most likely cause of this problem is that a firewall client running on your machine is blocking the necessary FTP ports."

"If you are trying to use FTP, please contact the manufacturer of your personal computer for assistance."

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I have not (intentionally) changed any settings on my laptop or installed any new software so cannot understand why this has started happening. I have only been able to find advice where Norton has been used as the firewall, so any help would be much appreciated.

I have some shared folders that others need to access via a Windows 7 VM. Suddenly they can't, an error saying device is not responding. If I disable Windows Firewall on my PC (Windows 8.1) they can connect. However even this is a problem because they need to enter username and password even tho password protected sharing is off.

I've tried adding a rule allowing the VM port but it didn't help. File and print sharing, Network Discovery, Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance are all enabled in the firewall.

I don't know what else to try. Pinging my IP just times out also unless the firewall id off.

Any help?

UPDATE: I just enabled NETlogon Service and I can connect but it still wants a username and password which is definitely turned off

UPDATE 2: Got it working:
Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Local Security Policy
Security Options
set ?Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts? to ?Guest only ? local users authenticate as Guest?

Have just today got signed up with a new ISP here in London, but my Sygate Firewall seems to be blocking access to the net.

Have used it without any probs for 4 years, and normally it is merely a question of it asking you whether any new applications should / should not be granted access to the web.

I have only been able to type this, by deleting the Sygate folder from my c drive, since the icon for it has disappeared from task bar, and oddly, it will not allow me to uninstall either manually or from contr. panel.

The icon for sygate does still appear in my start bar, it was shown as running, in the task manager list of apps.

====

I just tried to d/load the latest version of Sygate ( 5.6) - but it would not allow me to install.

Should I scrap it and go with another, such as ZA ? And will I need to configure specific ports to make sure I get connected ?

Any assistance welcome.

As an aside I have AVG updated and running - but obviously would like to have my firewall back.

Hello, I am having a problem connecting to the internet in my home computer. My computer is running Windows 7 home basic. The internet connection always worked before but it stopped working out of nowhere. When I run the troubleshoot option it gives me the following message: "security or firewall settings might be blocking the connection." I have tried disabling my antivirus (McAfee) but that did not fix the problem. I have tried disabling both the windows firewall (which is always off anyway) and the McAfee but did not work either. I have tried doing a system restore to a previous date when the internet worked but that did not work either. I have tried doing a booting the computer to a clean boot but that did not work either. I have ran out of options other than just doing a complete reformat of the system which I do not want to do because it would take too long and I do not have time because I am in school. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this problem? Thank you for your help.

Ps. I know that the internet connection is working because when i plug my laptop in using the Ethernet cable I do get internet connection so I know everything is functional with the equipment.

Hello,

Did you just uninstall Mcafee or use the removal tool? McAfee Product Uninstaller

Have you tried disabling any anti-virus or firewall being used?

Boot the PC into Safe Mode w/Networking and see if you can access the internet.

backup your current settings except the firewall -> reset everything -> restore from the backup and not the firewall rules
if the problem still persists -> set the firewall rule to auto-decide and also check the allowed ports for each applications
disable windows firewall to prevent conflictions
choose your wifi as Private, uncheck "Friends"

avast firewall is a bit hard to play with and it may cause some unexpected problems
first we should let it auto-decide for a few days and then we can play around with the settings

Hey everyone,
This is my first post, and first time I've not been able to solve my problem by searching previous posts...so hopefully someone can help me out.
I'm trying to install a downloaded .exe file, and Windows firewall is blocking it regardless of whether the firewall is active or not; the specific error message & the subsequent Windows help screen are attached. The Windows help screen indicates that the file came from an "untrusted" website, and suggests adding the source website to the "trusted" list if I'm sure that the file is safe (which I am, and I did...and I'm getting the same results when I try to open the .exe).
After the adding the source site to the "trusted" category failed, I attempted to run the file after completely shutting off Windows firewall (along with Bitdefender, which I'm also running). I'm still getting the same error message; it's as if Windows firewall is just ignoring me...can anyone help me either get around this, or tell me how to really shut off the firewall so it stops blocking this file?

A:Windows firewall blocking .exe file even after firewall is disabled

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

You can turn the Windows Firewall back on. The issue has nothing to do with the Firewall.

You can turn the Bitdefender back on too.

The issue is probably caused by one or more settings within IE. You might try resetting IE:

Hi Patrick,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team responding to your posting. The first thing I would suggest is that you manually run LiveUpdate to make sure you have the latest program and definition files applied to your installation of Norton Internet Security, and to then reboot into Safe Mode and run a Full System Scan to check for infections. You may also want to clear all of temporary internet files from all of your web browsers toi make sure they are not causing the problem.

Since you are using Norton Internet Security, it is important that you have the Windows firewall disabled so there are no conflicts. Norton Internet Secur... Read more

Im actually having an issue currently with the Win 7 firewall and my bittorrent client, uTorrent.

uTorrent reports that its not connectible due to a router or NAT error. Although I am still getting traffic through from AIX (BF2 Mod). The speedguide to test if the port is forwarded properly reports that the port does not appear to be open. I have allowed uTorrent both in inbound and outbound traffic and I have allowed it on Private and Public connections and still no change in status. Any clues on this?

I have completely uninstalled Windows 7 Firewall control and completely turned off the Windows 7 Firewall all together after I reset its options back to default. With it off uTorrent still reports that the port is not open. I have a firewall on my router, but I have it set to be turned off.

Any idea on where to start trouble shooting? Its actually quite bothersome knowing that my firewall is messing up.

A:Win 7 Firewall Blocking Traffic

Firewall has nothing to do in this case. The port has to be forwarded in your router/modem.Note down the listening port number for incoming connections in uTorrent settings ( Options > Preferences > Connections )Open your router settings by typing its default IP address ( like 192.168.1.1 ) in browser. How to forward the port depends on the model of router you have. You can find the instructions for doing so in the router manual. You may also find the instructions at http://www.portforward.com/You can also post the make and model number here, there is a possibility that some of BC members have the same model.

May I make a recommendation I'm not sure you will like? The best firewall is actually Windows firewall. I would argue that it is better than any other firewall that you might install. However, this choice is yours to make. take care

My biggest question is when I've tried to download files from Hotfile, File Factory, File Sonic, Fileserve and Megaupload. I get a window saying:

Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at (insert Hotfile or any of the others)

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. (They work on my wife's laptop so that's not the problem.)

I can get to all other sites except some places to watch video like CBS.

I use Windows Firewall but when I opened up that program and looked at "allow a program through Windows Firewall", I noticed that Firefox was NOT checked. (As well as Mozilla Firefox) That's what I use all time. How can it get through if it's not checked? And I couldn't find anything that related to those websites.

But, I can download from Rapidshare, Sendspace, and Oron.

Any ideas for me so I can fix these problems? Is it my firewall or some setting in Firefox?

Thank you,
Tony

My desktop PC, which is connected to my BT Homehub router with an ethernet cable, dropped off the network a few days ago. My laptop, which is wireless is still fine. I spent 45 minutes on the phone to BT tech. support without success. The girl there reckoned that the firewall element of my AVG Free version 9 was preventing the router automatically assigning an IP address to my desktop. The IP address should be 192.... but is actually 169....Is this likely, and why does my laptop, which has the same AVG software, still work fine? And why did it suddenly happen after months of faultless networking? Any ideas about how to get around the problem will be most welcome.

Internet Security apps (those that contain an antivirus, firewall, and other "internet" features) will sometimes break. And sometimes when they break, they leave no traces as to why. That's why I don't recommend using Internet Security applications. Instead, I suggest using a free antivirus and a free firewall control program.

So, I'd suggest that you test this by doing the following:

Anti-Virus Removal:
Please do the following:
- download a free antivirus for testing purposes: http://www.carrona.org/freeav.html
- uninstall the AVG from your system (you can reinstall it, if so desired, when we're done troubleshooting)
- remove any remnants of AVG using this free tool: http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools
- IMMEDIATELY install and update the free antivirus
- check to see if this fixes the BSOD's

I am a new user of Syquest Personal Firewall. I continually get messages which read "An application named _____________has been blocked from accessing the network." Two of the above blanks read: "NDIS User mode I/O Driver" and "file name YPager.exe". I am in a quandary as to whether or not to allow access to either, or both, of these. Can anyone help me in this decision? TIA. My OS is XP Pro.

A:Blocking in Personal Firewall?

Both of these are realtively harmless. Here's the first (thanks to Experts Exchange):

NDIS. "This is a system file that makes calls to dynamic link libraries amongst the TCP/IP stack. It uses communication ports and the loopback address in order to make these calls. This is why you see the communication on your firewall. It's not trying to connect to the Internet, just another port on your computer for the purpose of calling instructions."
The second is from Yahoo Messenger, so this would be OK if you are using this program.

You should probably go into Sygate's setup and allow them.

Hi there

I don't want to post this as a problem, but a general enquiry. Hopefully a pretty simple one. I did a search through the forums here but I suspect that 'routing exe' is very generic and I would be spending time looking at irrelevant posts. If I am mistaken here, sorry.

I occasionally get a pop up message from the firewall advising that it is blocking 'routing exe' as per my current settings. I don't allow this for the simple reason that I don't really know what it is and I am not experiencing any problems that I know of by continuing in this way.

I have had some trojans found on my system (which I believe I have since cleaned out) recently so I am a little paranoid.

What is the routing exe, and what would be calling it?

thanks in advance.

Hey,

I just updated my system without problems. But now, when I check for new updates, it says it can't with an error code. When I click on "help" or something, it says that a firewall is blocking the connection.

I don't have any specific firewall running (only the windows one), so that isn't the problem. How to fix this issue?

EDIT:
After some times, it managed to connect to the servers. Strange :S

Hi, I'm new hwre and I was wondering is somebody could help me...

I'm unable to download anything from any site, specially if they are big files.
Every time, the download process begins but then it stops and just stays there.

I have Windows XP Service Pack 2. I normally use Firefox, but I have this problem with IE too. I've re-installed Firefox 3 (I thought maybe it could help) but nothing happened and then I changed to Firefox 2... but still doesn't work.

I've tried to download iTunes from Apple's website and it was a nightmare because it stopped every two minutes and I had to pause it and re-start it... it finally worked but I don't have that luck with all files, most of them don't work unless I disable Firewall.

I've also tried 3 different downloader managers.
One og them worked with 400 MB file but it took more than 3 hours, literally.

A few days ago, I disable the Firewall while I tried to download a file and it worked (it took a long time) but I don't want to keep my firewall on and off and on again every time I want to download something. Besides this was so sudden because everything was working fine until last week.

So, I wonder... can it be a virus? (it sounds stupid, I know. Although I've scanned my computer and it didn't find anything)
should I format my computer and re-install Windows? I really don't want to and I don't know if it's going to work, considering that this was sudden and ... Read more

Hi everyone.
I thought the firewall on my router was supposed to protect me from inbound events recorded by the firewall on my pc. I installed a Motorola WR850GP wireless router a little over a week ago. My XP desktop is wired to the router and my W98se laptop is connected wireless. I left the 3rd party firewalls on just to see if there would be any inbound events. There wasn't for a while. But the last 3 or 4 days there has been on the Xp machine. 2 today, which is far less than before i installed the router. I thought there was a Motorola forum but haven't found it. I have all the recomended encryption and made passwords on the router. Does anyone know if there is a way to stop this? I was under the impression that you should turn off 3rd party firewalls when using a router firewall. Now I'm afraid to. I was looking in to changing IP addresses on the computers in the routers settings but I don't know if this is the problem. I know DHCP is enabled if this helps. Don't know if I should change those settings to be more secure. The firewall on the desktop is McAfee and on the laptop, Zone Alarm. So far no access attempts have been recorded on the laptop. Thanks.

A:Router firewall is not blocking everything.

I left the 3rd party firewalls on just to see if there would be any inbound eventsClick to expand...

Without explaining the events we can't tell you what is occuring and even if its an inbound "threat". Inbound attempts can come in on a router for a number of reasons. The big question is it a threat?

Something as innocuous as your Anti-virus trying to run an update will generate an inbound connection...

NAT firewalls do not STOP all incoming connections they actually filter incoming connections. Certain things like port 80 and things like that are open specifically for web browsing.

DHCP enabled or disabled does nothing to provide security.

You may want to read this article here -

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Firewalls-101.html

As well check and make sure something is not in the DMZ.... DMZ places your PC totally outside the NAT firewall.

I very recently got a new computer and re-installed all my programs (it's an HP using Windows Vista). I have tried just about everything I could think of to make my programs work successfully, I even uninstalled my Norton Antivirus in hopes that they would work, but my Windows Firewall is still blocking them, even when I switched it off. The programs that are not working are uTorrent and Blizzard installer. I spent many hours using the tutorial to unblock them from both of my firewalls, but it seems to no avail. Previously uTorrent said it had no incoming connections, now it is not working at all. Blizzard downloader is slightly working, though very very slowly and still says that it is being blocked by my firewall, even when I had it turned off. I am at a complete loss as of what to do, and would appreciate any and all help very much. Thank you for your time (:

Hi guys. I have Mcafee Internet security and under my firewall logs it states that my own ip is trying to access my PC through port 1900. I want to know if i should allow it or not?
It happens every few minutes non stop. I have looked at my Network connections on the software and the list is empty - so it could be just the software not realizing that the ip belongs to me.
But then I thought it might be possible Mcafee doesnt want my ip as trusted for whatever reason? I am using a mobile broadband dongle from the UK it says VPN/DIALup connection..
So I would like to know why my ip is trying to access port 1900 all the time, and if I should allow it - or just continue to ignore it?
Is it possible a virus could use your ip against you somehow? The machine is clean and not slow in any way.

I tryed a firewall called Comodo. I was not impressed because I could not get it to allow alot of my apps access even after creating rules ect. I uninstalled it, which was a nightmare and took forever because their installer is bugged! anyway, I have gone through the Regedit and deleted all ref's to comodo, deleted the folders ect. Best as I can tell everythine has been removed. However I have programs, apps and games that used to access fine BEFORE installing Comodo that cant connect now! Should I do a reinstall of XP? or is there some other files that the firewall might of moded that can be replaced? Any thoughts or ideas? I have a post on the Comodo Forums, but after searching most of the day I have yet to find anyone with a problem like this after following the manuel uninstallation and I'm not to hopeful...
Im running XP sp2.
