Preferred Solution: are hard reset and factory reset the same thing?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: are hard reset and factory reset the same thing?

Hi, No, factory reset will bring your machine back to facory status (the time opening the box) byt hard reset won't. Regards.

Before resorting to a Factory Restore, could you describe your computer and the problem that you are having?  There is a tremendous amount of expertise here on this Forum, and they might be able to find a solution that preserves everything.

Most computers have a recovery partition and it is a matter of pressing an F# key to initiate a factory image recovery, but I would not do that until I had backed up all of my data to an external drive.  Some companies, like Acer, claim that they will put your data in a separate folder and preserve it, but that did not work on a friend's computer that did require a factory restore.  You do not need the Windows disks if you do a factory restore, at least in most cases that I am aware of.  I am not a pro here.

Is your backup drive an external USB drive?  If so, make sure it is unplugged ... just in case.  If not, copy your backups, after they have been verified by the backup program (assuming you are not using Windows backup), to ensure that they are good, and make sure that you have created a backup recovery CD to boot from just in case the factory recovery is not successful.  They can fail if the recovery partition is corrupt, or their are issues with the sector integrity on Drive C:\.

I really recommend that you post more information to assist the pros here (not me) to help you correctly diagnose what the real issue is.  If you have a dying hard drive, for examp... Read more

Hello, Welcome to the HP Support forums. Thank you for posting! If you aleady performed the BIOS/UEFI hardware tests and if they say HDD fails, then this is it. The problem is hardware related - not Windows, not software and the hardware (HDD) needs to be replaced. Your options: 1) If your computer is still under active warranty period , please contact HP Support and inform them. They will work with you about the way to replace the faulty component.  Contact HP:>> http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.html>> http://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp  2) If your computer is with warranty period expired, you will need to replace the faulty HDD - buy it on your own. There are variety of options - vendors you can choose from - you need 2.5 inches HDD SATA. You can get it online or from PC retail store. You can also consider installing SSD instead of HDD - this is strongly recommended as SSDs are way faster, more repliable and lighter. More info on SSDs:>> http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001396.htm>> http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2404258,00.asp  How to replace the faulty HDD with new HDD or new SSD: please, find info and instruction in your computer's manual or watch YouTube videos as an example. If you do not want to do this on your own, please bring the computer (or ship it) to HP Authorized Service Center where the technicians will do this for you. I have owned this Lenovo laptop for about 3 years now, so I definitely don't have a warranty for it any more.So 2 days ago I got a blue screen saying there was an error (which started happening for a few weeks now very rarely on random occasions), and my windows wouldn't launch anymore. After research, I checked the BIOS and it says that my hard-drive is not detected. Thing is, sometimes it works for a few minutes and I can launch windows but then it crashes (in which case when I had checked the bios the hard-drive would be detected). I tried unplugging and replugging the hard-drive, and that didn't work. I plugged the hard-drive to another computer as an external hard-drive and it works fine there, without any real issues. When I tried doing a factory reset, it just gets stuck on the initilisation so that doesn't work either. So I'm guessing it's not a real problem with the hard-drive. I asked a local computer repair shop and he told me that it's an issue with the bios, but I'm kinda out of ideas about what to do. Any thoughts? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5320, not that old at all. I tried downloading a game, and then got the BSOD. I had to reset my PC, lost everything I had, but ended up starting from scratch. Now, every so often, I'm getting a message saying "Windows detected a hard disk problem. Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss...". I right clicked on the "faulty" hard drive for error checking, no errors were found. I tried HD Tune Pro, and that's telling me "warning" for health status (05) Reallocated Sector Count (failed) is in red, and (C4) Reallocated Event Count (warning) is in yellow. Does this mean I have to replace the hard drive? The computer was working totally fine until that BSOD. Now it works and all but I keep getting that error message. The laptop is not that old really, and never any physical damage, but perhaps past warranty. I dont really have anything left to back up, since I lost everything when I reset it to factory state. Any advice?

A:Windows Detected a Hard Disk Problem after factory reset?

I'm afraid it doesn't sound good for that hard drive.  You could run Speccy which you can download from here
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/speccy/ and look at the SMART data for your drive.    After running it click File -> Publish snapshot... Copy and paste the link it gives you into your next post.

For more information about the drive, you could download hard drive diagnostics form the Seagate or Western Digital web site and run them.  I've used Seatools from Seagate a good bit.

If you have to replace that drive, you'll probably lose the recovery partition, so be prepared for that.  Your user guide should have info on how to create the recovery discs if you haven't already done that.

Good luck.

Dear all,
Recently there was a problem in my Dell XPS 12 and I had to use Dell factory reset to renew my windows 8.1. While I was doing factory reset my computer created a back up of all my personal files and save them in a folder called "20140701120559_BACKUP". Inside this folder there are so many ".INP" files and some XML files. When I open "include.xml" I can see the path for all my files. Sadly after my computer finished installing new windows it didn't restore my files and it restarted and came up with new windows. Now I am trying to restore my files but "Dell Back Up" and Restore application cannot find the back up and I cannot select manually that back up on my external hard drive. Then I did some search and I ended up that I can use a solution that was explained in this link:
http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/KCS/KcsArticles/ArticleView?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&docid=539013

Using this application I can select the back up in my external drive but when I press restore, I receive this error:
SoftThink SAS has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

And when I press close, it will close and nothing will happen!
Can anybody please help me to find a way to restore all my files?

Thank you,
Saman

Hi, After weeks of trying to get an answer to this problem without any assistance, either online or here (what's the use of a warranty when there's no customer service to speak of?) I tried transferring some files to my flash drive a day ago. The thing that happened now was that the transfer started out fine for the first few seconds (as usual), before crawling to a halt and then stopping completely - I can't remember what the exact message was, but it was something in the vein of "problems with disk". I then found out that I could neither add or delete files to the flash drive as it had been write protected. I searched online for how I could remove this protection (regedit, command prompt), but nothing helped - to my great, great frustration. Therefore, the flash drive is now useless to me, thanks to the laptop. I then experienced that the external hard drive that I tried to transfer the files from had also been write protected! Before pulling out my hair I checked if this was also the case when I plugged it in to another laptop (Asus). It wasn't. But on my Lenovo z50-75 that hard drive is useless for some strange reason. After experiencing this mountain of problems I want to do a full factory reset on my laptop, and then reinstall all my programs. My question is how I go about doing this. And also: when doing the reset, will it boot up with Windows 10, as it did when I purchased the laptop a little over a year ago?

Hey Guys,

Looking for your advice and any links if any...cheers in advance

My Situation

In December 2009 I purchased a Toshiba Qosmio X500 - Model No. PQX33A-00X00J

At the time I upgraded my purchase from Toshiba Reseller BD4U, going from the standard 1x 500GB Sata drive + 1x 64GB SSD... to instead having 2x 500GB sata drives. I purchased with 3 year onsite next business day warranty, that is is now expired.

It came loaded with MS Win 7 Premium Home Edition - but no disks provided.
My Needs
I need/want to factory reset my PC - its starting to run slowI need to re-partition from my existing 4x partitions to just having 2
The Issues
Possibly as a result of upgrading the disk drives at time of purchase, I don't believe I have a hidden Recovery partition in order to do a System Recovery from the Hard Disk Drive - see image of my current partitions attached I don't have Win 7 OS installation disks or Toshiba Driver disks as they should have been installed by Toshiba
My Questions
Do You agree that I DONT have a Recovery Partition - when looking at the partition image? I'm confused on this point coz people say its hidden!?Given I have no Toshiba Drivers Disk or Windows 7 OS disks - what should I do? I'm thinking of downloading Win 7 (use my product key from sticker under PC) and making a disk/USB (but need to learn how)Is this where I get ALL necessary Toshiba drivers for my PC from?Does Toshiba provide a link on its site and instructions on where to get Win 7 ... Because of a problem recently for some reason, alot of my apps were greyed and not working. Despite upgrading to v1903, nothing was repaired or change to the Apps not working.

Despite Reset/Repair in Setting of some 20 Apps, the PC was still not right. During certain operations it would hang for 10/15 seconds.

Carried various checks with Defender and Malwarebytes, nothing found.

So tried "Reset" to take PC back to Factory. After an hour or so, came up as could not carry out the PC.

I have a flashdrive with Mediacreation for 1903 and a Macrium Reflect image.

So although the image was made before the current problem, which would be the option to have a reinstall of Windows. Format the hd and put the image onto the hd or start the image to put it back onto the hd.

But what could be the route of the problem where the Apps failed, still failed despite the upgrade from 1809 to 1903 and why Reset would not go back to factory.

Thanks

I noticed that my computer has two graphics cards: Ati Radeon HD 3850 (With wich the pc system was advertised with) and a mysterious Ati radeon HD 3200. But, I also noticed that my system was using this 3200 one, wich is less "powerful" than the 3850 model.
So, I checked out ati catalyst settings and stuff and ended up deciding to disable the 3200 graphics card. I was expecting the other card to take over when I disable the older one, but seems that you can't really rely on logic with computers. Ending result was a black screen that I couln't just get up going again. I tried shutting down and restarting the computer with power switch, but the display receives no signal still. I can hear the starting sounds of windows, so the system starts fine just no video.
Now I would need some way to navigate to graphics card enabling button without the display.
Or some advices of what buttons to press in BIOS or whatever there is with Vista 64-bit when I can't see a thing of what I'm pressing.
Maybe a reset to factory settings option? If anyone can guide with this I would really appriciate. Like "press f2, then f9 and enter" or something.

Or is there any clever way to fix this easily?
I hope someone understood...English ain't my first language. Sorry for grammar.

Hello Everyone:I recently bought a laptop and decided to get my friend to set it up because I was to busy to do it my self. When I got it back I found that he had installed Windows 7 instead and partitioned the hard drive. I did the free upgrade to Windows 10 but now I am wondering if there is anyway to do reset it to factory defaults (with all the preloaded software and such)

A:Factory Reset

Since you did the free upgrade to Win 10 the computer would have been registed with Microsoft, hence just download the OS from Microsoft and the it should activate automatically.Alternatly:Since the computer is loaded with Win 7 which was not shipped with the computer, you need to get a Recovery Disc from HP and run Recovery.:http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07143

If warranty is already expired, why do you need a factory recovery ? ( when everybody usually want a clean install ). I am at a loss here.

In a MBR partitioned disk, giving OEM Recovery partition the "Active" mark can be used to kick start the recovery process. However GPT partition scheme changes everything and this old trick won't work anymore. If the installation image inside the "Recovery" partition is in "WIM" format, you may be able to manually restore the OS from it.

I have a Dell Inspirion N5110 that I received from my son-in-law that I would like to re-set to "new factory" and have everything that is on the computer erased. I don't want to have his personal files on the computer, not my business to snoop. The computer came with windows 7 home premium installed. I have since added SP1 to it. Is there some way to use the original factory image that I downloaded from Dell to do so that would included the SP1 pack? Would creating another image work? I have a complete back up of the computer.
Thanks
Rick

OK, so I bought an HP EliteBook from an auction that was used by a business that is currently running Windows 7 Professional. I want to reset the PC to factory but I do not have admin rights and ask for Domain password everyday I try, Any Ideas

A:FACTORY Reset

It may not even have a Recovery partition if it was business used.

What does it show under disk management?

What a mess! I need to update drivers; am unsure what/which websites to trust mainly, bcuz of the "free" scans which point out trouble, then after finding the "solutions"; IP addresses and other id has been gathered then the price info is produced. Is "Drivers for Free Unlimited" legit?

A:Help! Had to factory reset!

Get the latest drivers from the PC (or motherboard) manufacturer's web site. If no specific instructions for installation order install the chipset first, then I like to install the networking and graphics and then the rest randomly.

Do less at any given time.
