I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I own a Dell Optiplex 745, running Windows XP Professional 32-bit. The Dell System Direct isn't launching, even though it will download, it says .APPLICATION, which cannot be opened. Does anyone have a fix?

A:Dell Optiplex 745 - Windows XP Pro 32-bit Dell System direct issue.

The older versions of Dell System Detect are security risks - if you're running an antivirus program, it may be flagging and intercepting the program.  At any rate, you should NOT be using Windows XP online at this point, as it has seen no security updates in almost two years - you really need to upgrade to a supported version of Windows (at this point, that's a minimum of Windows 7).

Quite suddenly I'm getting a frequent popup in a small window that says "Dell Update, 1 update is ready to install. Dell Inspiron 2350 System BIOS" The options are "Install now" and "Remind me later". Does this look legitimate? If so, is it something I want to do? My computer is almost 4 years old and it's running fine. I hate to risk breaking something. I'm running the latest Windows 10 Creators Update.

Ok. I got my inspiron 1525 dell laptop with windows vista home basic. I got it on christmas, so that about 3 weeks ago.

When I first started up the computer it was fine, I downloaded my music from my other computer and my pictures. I then downloaded mozzila firefox and picasa.

everything still worked, widows media player for music. and media direct for dvds and such. EVERYTHING WORKED GREAT.
then things began to stop working, dell media direct wouldn't start at all, and widows media player basically ate my ram

after a week and a half with my brand-new laptop. it crashed, and yes I had virus protection software.

I wiped my computer and a friend had to start me over with the discs they send you for this and plus.

I downloaded my music, deleted a lot too, didn't download my endless files of pictures. Downloaded mozilla, avast virus software thingy and winamp media player(I'm never touching windows media player again, it already ate my computer once).

but NOW, it's four days later and dell media direct won't start. I have version 3. and I just watched a movie with it YESTERDAY.

I don't want to start over again, I don't have time, I leave home in 2 days, and I need this computer. I will be 260 miles away from anyone who can help me for free. I'm a college student who has no money whatsoever and a desperate need for this computer to work. I don't have a seperate hard drive to store my things on again and wipe and start over.

i have a dell e1505 it shipped with dell media direct. which means that when the computer is off and one presses the dell media direct button the computer boots from a different partition on the HD and allows a person to access music and videos. however i formated my entire HD because of all the crap that dell installs. i called dell for help and they said that i would need the dell media direct reinstallation cd to make media direct work after a format. so they sent me one. when i try to install it it says that it was unable to copy some files for the installation. why would it say this? where can i get some info about installing it? i called dell and they did not know how to resolve the issue. wat a surprise.

A:repair dell media direct help

You need to boot from the Media direct cd and select option1. It will create a 2.01 GB partition (logical) for Media direct and allocate rest to OS. Then you need to reinstall OS and once the installation is complete, install Mediadirect from the cd.

I have upgraded my Dell XPS M1210 from XP to Vista and any connection to Media Direct seems to be lost. I mean, in the laptop there is no sign of that software.
I guess it wasn't installed with Vista because is not part of it but if I start the computer directly into Media Direct, it works fine but to get updates for example it says to go and access Media Direct from Windows.
How do i get Media Direct to "reappear" in Windows?

Other question:
Looking at my Disk Management, my hard drive is divided into 5 partition
1 110 MB EISA Configuration What is it?
2 is the C drive
3 8 MB unallocated
4 2 GB Primary (I think this is media direct)
5 3 GB Primary ( i think this is the Dell Symantc Recovery partition)

How do i get the 8MB unallocated and the 3GB of the dell recovery ( since it seems it doesn't work anymore) to be addedd to the main partition?

thanks

Hello,

A couple weeks ago I reinstalled Windows (there was too much on it, viruses, running slow, blah) and it was working fine, but last night I turned it on (in the dark, I may have pressed the Media Direct button, I may have not) and the Dell Media Direct screen loads, I try to exit and the computer turns off. I turned it on again and it happens again. After a couple times of this, rather than turning off, the screen went black, then blue with "CONFIG_LIST_FAILED" STOP: 0x00000073 and something about dumping the physical memory and that I should start in safe mode.

I restarted the computer and went to advanced set up. When I try to start up in Safe mode, however, I get another error code, telling me that I probably have a boot virus!!

I tried booting from the Vista recovery disk but Dell Media Direct continues to boot first even though in BIOS it says it'll try the disk first.
Everything I have read on the internet about these errors has said to boot into safe mode or run repair on the recovery disk but neither of these things are working.

What are my options?!

(I don't mind losing everything that's on the HD because I backup frequently)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT:
If I replace the hard drive will it be fixed?

If you've got a Dell laptop that is several years old, many of you will be aware of the living hell that is Dell Media Direct (referred to forthwith in this post as DMD). This is a program installed inside a partition on your hard drive, the idea behind which was to be able to access multimedia applications quickly even with the power off simply by pressing the home button on the keyboard.

Fine, good idea in theory. What happens in practice is that if inadvertently pressed, you can be caught in an infinite loop on boot up where the laptop never gets past the DMD screen and therefore you cannot access Windows.

For anyone interested, this excellent post by Dan Goodell explains in much more detail how this partition works:
http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/mediadirect.shtml

There is a quick fix which works for many, which is simply to press the Home button again with the power off, and the machine toggles back from the DMD screen to boot straight into Windows. For many others, though, this fix does not work and what ensues is a nightmare trial-and-error process taking several hours or days of pressing random keys, following hunches, researching on internet forums and blindly installing recommended pieces of software in the hope that they might just work and extricate you from Groundhog Day.

Please bear with me here, this is going to be quite a long post. Yes, I have a problem, which will be listed near the end, but I also want to detail my problems and how I went abou... Read more

So. The primary power button is non-responsive.

The media direct button works after you hold it for a few seconds.

It also loads into media direct if you put the battery back into the laptop automatically without touching any buttons.

It sometime spontaneously starts into media direct when the screen in closed and turned off.

I cannot gain access to the windows environment or bios, or access the boot Cd's because it won't turn on via the main power button.

Also the first few restarts after the re-install were flawless.

I've just put in another hdd from a m1210 and the main power button won't work either, but it loads into windows, perhaps media direct was't installed on this hdd.

Had problems within the first two days vista crashed, thats a whole nother issue. The last step is dell direct media 3.5, I am goign to create a ghost image of the pc before i start doing anything because this has to do with making partitions and changing to AHCI, i dont even know if this is going to work or if it can work. I am going to give it a shot but if anyone has any experience with this let me know! I wasn't quite sure where to post this, so I'll try here. I have installed W7 RC and the Dell MD BluRay software and it works except it wraps the video around the screen. IOW the left side of the video starts about 1/3 of the way from the left side of the screen and the right of the video wraps to the left side of the screen.

I have tried Arcsoft TMT3 and PowerDVD and the video is fine, but no sound from TMT3 and PowerDVD spiked my CPU to 100% 5 times watching a movie yesterday. Had to completely shut down the program and restart and then it would run fine for a while.

If anyone has any suggestions or knows of a Dell upadte, I would be gratefull.

My 16 month old pressed the MediaDirect button on my Dell 1420 laptop and I didn't think anything of it until my computer wouldn't boot! I was originally getting the Dell start screen followed by the message "Invalid partition table." Here is a list of things I have tried so far and the results:

1. Ran fixmbr in XP recovery console - no change

2. Downloaded and ran "Dell Media Direct Repair Utility" - "Invalid partition table message was replaced with "2 active partitions"

3. Ran fixboot c: in recovery console - no change

4. Downloaded and ran Ultimate Boot Disc CD - tried to set one partition as inactive, but it says there is a partition error and won't let me save

5. Downloaded and ran Windows XP Emergency Boot Disc to try and bypass the mbr and boot into windows to get a few unbackedup files off - the Windows loading screen was a welcome vision, but instead of booting into Windows, the laptop booted into MediaDirect.

6. I repeated #5 - got the message "Windows could not start because the following file is missing for corrupt: <windows root> \systemroot32\hal.dll Please reinstall a copy of the above file"

Is there any way to fix this without reformatting?? Others have posted in various places on the web that they have been able to fix it, but it seems I'm running out of options!!

A:Pressed the Dell Media Direct button and laptop won't boot

Alright, it's fixed! I downloaded a Windows XP Emergency Boot CD from AnswersThatWork. I booted from that CD and and got to #6 above.

I did a little research and decided to boot with the Windows XP CD and go into setup. I saw that my partitions were back to the way they were before this whole thing, yay! When I was having issues, it seemed that my C: drive had swapped with my F: drive.

Next I decided to go back into Recovery Console and try bootcfg /rebuild at the prompt again. I did that and this time it added the OS on C: to the boot list, but it was added as partition 3 (it was added as partition 1 previously). Then I typed fixboot c:. I rebooted and everything booted up normally!!

I guess that since it was the first time that the MediaDirect button was pressed, it was trying to do stuff (ie build its new partition, etc) and because I shut down in the middle of everything, it messed up my partitions. Just allowing MediaDirect to finish setting up fixed the partitions.

What's up. I'm looking for a graphics card that's direct x 11 compatible for my 530s. Everything on the computer is stock. I don't play games on my PC just need a new card so I can use OBS to stream with my Elgato on YouTube. Cheaper the better.
Thanks in advance!

A:Dell Inspiron 530s Direct X 11 Graphics Card Upgrade

Specifically One card from ONE vendor.   ASUS EAH 5450.
Some LOW Profile cards WILL NOT FIT.  The ASUS Silent 5450 and 6450 Definitely will.
The low profile must be REALLY low profile or the cover will not go on or the heatsink will prevent the hard drive bracket from going back in or both.

Get an ASUS SILENT RADEON HD 5450.  THE EAH5450 from ASUS fits in ALL Models of GX280 EXCEPT THE USFF Pictured Below.   THE 5450 Comes with 2 sets of brackets for Low Profile or standard slots.
If you have USFF you cannot install ANY card because there are no slots.

USB recovery fails.
After following the directions supplied with the USB key i.e. (Boot PC hit F12 select Boot from USB) the boot process begins but I get the following message "Protection Error... Unable to continue the booting process. Some informations are corrupted or missing!!"
Information given to Dell when ordering part.
PC = Optiplex 780, O/S = Windows 7 64bit
Part received = SKU 342-5779 Dell Direct USB Recovery Key Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Dell, I do not like that restore disks do not come with the PC anymore. It was bad enough that PC manufacturer were putting the restore info on an OEM partition on the hard drive. Works fine if the problem is not a HDD failure.  I also do not like the idea that you can no longer order the restore DVD or CD.

A:Dell direct USB recovery key Win7 Home Premium 64bit

The dell usb recovery media are one time use and encrypted so they cannot be cloned. They are also machine specific.  Optiplex 780's are not machines that would have had Windows 7 home premium recovery key.  You cannot use any key on any system.  Your Optiplex 780 DOES NOT have a USB recovery key.
The Mispelling in your error also indcates to me that this "recovery key" did not come from dell.

You may not be able to purchase a Dell OS Recovery USB Key.  They are only for specific models and not available world wide. They also do not cover all OS.If you are not in the USA you may not be able to get one.

Hi guys,
I'd like to use the Intel Wifi Direct software for screen mirroring to Samsung TV, but looks like I'm in dead end. I've downloaded the software for WiDi, but it did not install due to my laptop did not meet program requirements - so I've googled and it came out I've got too old drivers. Updated them from official Dell driver support, and here comes the problem - it requires Graphics driver over 15.36.xx and if I choose my laptop model I got 10.xx driver and then 20.xx. 10.xx installs, 20.xx cannot. If i manually search for drivers for Intel HD4400 graphics then there are 15.36.xx drivers, but I cannot install them. Any idea how to skip that?

Hello dioskilos, A tip of the hat to noahdfear for this fix. Print out these instructions as we will need to shutdown every window that is open later in the fix.Download SmitRem and save the file to your desktop. Double click on smitRem.exe and then click on Start. When it is done, click on the OK button. You should now have a folder called smitRem on your desktop.Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:Restart your computerAfter hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appearSelect the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode. When your computer has started in safe mode and you see the desktop, close all open Windows.Open the smitRem folder on your desktop and double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.Follow the prompts on screen and wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish. When the tool is finished, it will will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or the partition where your operating system is installed. Examining that log should show that the infection was cleaned.Reboot your computer back to normal mode.Click on the Start button, then click on All Programs (or Programs), and then locate the SpywareStrike folder and right-click on it. Select the option to delete that folder. Post a fresh Hijackthis log, the smitfiles.txt log, and tell me how your computer is running.

I have a dell inspiron 15R (5521, late 2012 model)
It was recently dropped, and the HD went bad. At first the screen froze, so I restarted, and Windows 8 went through the diagnostics and attempted repairs. I do not think it actually fixed anything, but I figured something bad was gonna happen so I was able to boot to windows after that, and began moving over files, then halfway through the PC would freeze again, and I repeated the steps about 3-4 times until windows just would not boot and I got the "no boot device found" screen when booting up.
I ran windows diagnostics after, and got the 2000-0151 error.
Then unplugged the HD, plugged it into another laptop with a USB Sata cable, and it would show up in the device manager AND disk management, but not on My Computer. In disk management, it was uninitialized and everytime I tried to initialize it said it could not due to an I/O error.
Next, I tried EaseUS partition manager, and it recognized the drive, but not any partitions on it. So next, again.
I tried the seagate SeaTools to diagnose the drive, and almost all of the tests failed BUT, after the first time I even opened the program, the drive showed up through USB in My Computer!!
I try to navigate through the folders in the drive now, but when I go to C:/Users/NAME file explorer freezes. Same if I just open C:/ and try to cut/copy & paste any folder. So as a last resort, I remembered I had the Windows 8 (not 8.1) Dell Direct USB Key.
I plug the old HD back in... Read more

The drive is too far gone for home recovery.  What you need to realize now is that continued efforts on your part might just render the drive unrecoverable.
You will need to contact a data recovery service if you need the data back - the cost will depend on the difficulty of the recovery -- minimum for a reputable service will run $600-750 or so.

I had the System fix malware pop up on my computer so I restarted in safe mode and used the removal guide here to go about fixing it. Ran Rkill, tried to run TDSSkiller but it didn't work. Updated malwarebytes and ran it and it cleaned it out. Everything seemed to be fine except I still had the redirect. Two days later System Fix is back along with some Win removal 2012 malware. Did the same fix as the first time and same thing, works for 2 days then all back again. Went ahead and got Malwarebytes Pro and It keeps blocking some iexplorer program from connecting to a port.

I use Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit with Firefox
Thank you,
J

Update: When I try to run DDS it freezes before it finishes. When I try to run gmer it gives me an error "LoadDriver("C:\Users\Jank\AppData\Local\Temp\kxldypoc.sys") error 0xC000010E: An instance of the service is already running. I even tried to download a whole new install (instead of an upgrade) but got the same results.

Are you using windows update or are you using the full version of dx9b? The full version needs to be decompressed into a folder for the install. I make a folder, then let it decompress into that rather than using the default temp folder.

Direct 3D Issues..HELP!!!

I am running an Athlon 1700XP with Windows ME, i have an Elitegroup K7S5A M/board and 256 MB DDR RAM, with an ELSA GLADIAC 511 TV OUT Graphics card (64Mb)

I have run with this config successfully previously, but upon reformatting and reloading the system from scratch, I am having Direct3D problems. When running MSFS2002 it loads the menu pages fine, but as soon as the main sim fires up and it posts to full screen mode, the sim hangs.

Same can be said in DXDIAG, when executing 'Test Direct3D', the system hangs or shows an error in Direct3D. Have installed DirectX 8.1 with no success, and tried different configs in the graphics card settings...no joy... most unusual.

Any suggestions???

Cheers

Bob

A:Direct 3D issues, system hangs

I'm not familiar with that board, so I can't ask you if a certain chipset driver is installed or working (i only have a BX board), but there are a few things you can do.

Perhaps Sidebanding is eanbled ? You can force this off with Rivatuner, after you disable the protection settings (read the docs!). Or you can do it manually, with regedit: HKLM/software/Nvidia corporation/global/system
create a dword value "EnableAGPSBA", with a value of 0.
Powerstrip can handle this, too, although there may be some issues with the det4 drivers, when trying to disable SBA "on the fly" (after windows is already initialized, vs doing it in the registry).

Perhaps you are at AGP 4x. Try reducing the AGP rate to 2x. Rivatuner or powerstrip can do this.

You can also try reinstalling directX after *completely* removing it. You can do this with DirectX buster.

This does beg the question, though: Does OpenGL work fine?

I'm about ready to scream! After ignoring Windows Security Center update requests, I finally updated my computer. After that, I was stuck in a rebooting loop that stopped at my Compaq screen. I didn't know what to do so I ran my recovery console but didn't do complete restore as all of my files were saved. Problem is, no programs I had before work, they do not appear in the add/remove panel to uninstall them, and when I try to redownload to reinstall, it fails. On top of that, while at a Yuku site, I got hit with the stupid Antivirus System Pro pop up. I thought I deleted everything and stopped it from running at Startup, ran Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and Spybot and thought I was okay. Now I've noticed that search links are redirected and my computer is slow. When I look at the task manager, I see all these unfamiliar programs running. I cancel them and my computer runs better but I'll reboot and the fun starts again. I'm posting here wondering should I just wipe the computer clean to factory restore or is there any hope to clean it up? I can't even burn a disc to backup and can't find an online backup place that's big enough but at this point...I'm pretty much ready to ditch everything and start over.

Edit: I forgot to say I tried running the Panda Security online scanner. I started at 11:00 last night and this morning at 9:00 it was at 15%. It can't possibly take that long right?

The system is running extremely slowly and Google has been re-directing at every link. Some of the times a search result link is clicked, a dozen or more new tabs will open in a new browser window. Some of these tabs are random pages and some are blank tabs. As I poked around to see what processes were running, I noticed Ping.exe. If I manually terminate the process, Google doesn't re-direct, however Ping.exe will restart in seconds and the problem is back. I experimented and terminated the process then renamed Ping.exe in the System32 folder to xping.exe to see if the process would continue to start. Not only did it re-start as it's original name, but a new Ping.exe showed up in the folder.

I attempted to run dds.scr but it won't run or scan and I only get a notepad doc with characters and little embedded text stating the program can't be run in dos mode. Because it wouldn't scan, it didn't produce dds.txt or attach.txt files. I've pasted the first 1/3 or so of the text from the dds.scr error message below as it looks like only that portion has any discernible language. I was able to run GMER and it did notify that a modification was found to be caused by rootkit activity. Only the ark.txt file is attached as the dds.scr error message file is too large to attach here and the other two couldn't be generated.

Any help you can give will be much appreciated. This system is having major issues.

Thanks - Jay

Dell Inspiron 1545 notebook running Vista Home Premium. Automatic Updates is "on".

I suspect this is not strictly a Vista problem, but the user base may know of a solution. I also suspect the problem is with a Dell-specific service or application but that may be supported by underlying Vista services. I find references to a similar service for HP notebooks.

When I got my computer about 6 weeks ago, a transparent popup would appear briefly and then disappear when the caps lock key was toggled. It indicated the new state of the key and an icon was also placed in the Notification Area when the state was "locked".

A similar action took place if I toggled the "radio" button (F2) and a battery information window appeared it the "battery" key (F3) was pressed.

That worked for a week or so, then stopped working. I did many searches on The Internet and in the Dell Community Forums for a solution. No joy. Then one day, it mysteriously started working again. It worked for 3 days which spanned several times when the computer went into standby and when it went into hibernation each evening. A series of security updates came down from Microsoft which required reboot. The popups went away and in many more hours of research, I have been unable to find a solution. Miraculous "healing" has not recurred, either.

I finally contacted Dell Technical Support directly, which offered a download which I consider a "workaround" but ... Read more

A:Caps lock popup - Dell Inspiron 1545

Dell has come through for me and I am happy again. I got a phone call in response to a letter to corporate headquarters outlining the problem.

The solution to the problem indeed involved Dell Quickset. For whatever reason, the keyboard-support portion of Quickset had become corrupted or disabled. Even more mysterious is that it “healed” for three days then fell apart again. I have to wonder if something was catching the keyboard interrupts and overriding the Quickset driver.

The eager-to-help lady who called had me download and install Quickset and everything works as it originally did. The popup comes and goes and if the status is locked, the icon appears in the Notification Area. The “radio button” also displays its popup and the “battery key” again brings up the Battery Meter window. It sure keeps me aware of what I have done to the Caps Lock key.

The software is well behaved and does not cause a change of focus on any of the software I have run since. I wonder if the users voicing concerns about that were using an earlier version of Quickset, or perhaps some software, maybe games, do switch focus. For me, the behavior is exactly what I want.

(I had come close to solving the problem myself in that I had downloaded the latest version of Quickset, but on noticing it was the same version as I was currently running I did not do the installation. As a matter of fact, when I saw that, I even uninstalled Quickset ... Read more
