Q: Last backup did not complete successfully, access denied

I am trying to use Windows backup for laptop to external drive. Did it once before, no problem. I deleted old backup, ran again, seemed to run fine but got message that it did not complete successfully 0x80070005. Click "more information" and it says access denied. Looking at the drive with explorer, I see

All files have dates of the day I made the attempt
The first .vhd file is 47MB, the second 254 GB, which is probably all I have on disk
To see what it actually is, I tried restore, browse for files, and it comes up with a backup from months ago, probably the one I deleted. Maybe should have deleted using backup program, not explorer. I can drill down in this and see individual files, but did not try to restore.
Clicked on "choose another backup to restore from, it activated the drive but came up with the same one.
What do I do?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

It sounds like you may have improperly deleted the backup, or you have a deleted folder still included to be backed up.

If you like, you could reset Windows Backup to default, and set it up again to how you like to hopefully stop getting this error.

Hello!

I am reinstalling a system for my mother whose system crashed. I have everything set-up and was going to do a complete system drive backup (and have it a regular event). Everytime I try to back it up I get an immediate error saying that the access was denied.

Vista Ultimate x64
2 x 250 Gig HD (1: C:\ ~204G (~60g used) and D:\ ~30G, 2: E:\ ~233G)

Trying to backup C:\ to E:\ (Complete backup, not just files - File backup works)

C:\ is owned by TrustedInstaller D:\ is owned by the the only account (w/ admin status)

I am attaching pics to show the windows I get throughout the process.

I have seen many posts via Google with this issue, but haven't found an applicable fix for this situation.

Hi -

The error code 0x80070005 that I saw in the screenshots (nice, BTW) does refer to file permission issues. You are using Vista Ultimates own backup program so I would assume that the UAC prompted you and you are running at an elevated administrative level. To make sure of this, activate and log on to the hidden Vista admin account and try again. To activate the account -

START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe above under programs - select run as admin. Then type net user administrator /active:yes into the black cmd/DOS screen. Logoff your account and the user account named Administrator will be waiting for you at the logon screen. 2x-click on it.

One thing that is not clear to me here - You mentioned that the system crashed. I hope you know that doing this full system backup and then using it as a source for a restore, you will be left with the same system that crashed - even if you re-install Vista 1st. I think you may want to perform a more selective backup of personal folders and files. Also be wary of potential transference of infection if it now exists.

Anyone experience this issue when dual booting Windows 7 Enterprise (32-bit) and Ubuntu 9.10?

I've seen a few issues with this but everyone was dual booting... I've checked the backup location and it has 360GB free, and I have full permission to the backup location. Not sure what's going on...

Backup did not complete successfully.
I am running Business Vista 32bit on a HP Compaq desktop with 3 GB of RAM and 100GB hard disk drive. Over the past two months I have had my document folder backed up to a W2K Server folder-automatically.

Last week, I got the following error message: "The backup did not complete successfully. A shadow copy could not be created for the following reasons: Incompatible version of the serializing package (0x81070724)."

I went to another Business Vista computer on the same network, and backed up to the same Server folder (Userbackups) without any problems.

I am not interested in Acronis True Image 2009. I would like to continue using the automatic backup feature that came with Vista.

Error message when you try to perform a file backup operation or a system restore operation in Windows Vista: "Incompatible version of the serializing package. (0x80070724)"
A fix was issued to resolve this problem. Note- you will be resetting the shadow copy storage size, then resetting it back to default. enter the following into the command prompt and note the MAX size.

vssadmin list shadowstorage

Seven days ago I created my first post on this subject and received a response from the Vista Forum on 1/12/09 which I followed, and everything was updated successfully.

However, after inputting the proper commands to "change the maximum shadow copy storage value," I still get: "the backup did not complete successfully."

Does anybody have another solution for this backup problem? Or, why the steps in KB940970 did not fix my problem?

I suggest you use third party software like Acronis true image, r-drive image, Norton ghost.... Much better programmes for backing up then Vistas in-built one

hi,

i keep getting an error when running a windows 7 backup. it backs up to a linux server on the network. network sharing is correct.

at the very end of the backup it says some files were skipped. when i check on the linux server the hard drive is full of files so it has access so i don?t think it is a network problem.

i had a look at the log files in "C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsBackup" at the file "Backup Files 2010-02-07 190008_error.txt"

it says "Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\Websites. ErrorThe system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002))

I just got the desktop you see in the signature at the bottom of this post. I have NEVER used Windows Backup, but decided to give it a try. I have several folders that I created to hold specific types of data, and added all of them to the Library under Documents. But when I run the backup, I get a message that the backup did not complete successfully because some files were skipped. And the ones that were skipped are the ones in the Library. The message on each skipped folder is "E:\Users\Don\(folder name) as it is on backup target." That sounds like they're skipped because they it has already backed them up because they were part of the backup "target", whatever that is.

Is that right or wrong, and if it's right, can I ignore those messages, which come up every time for each of the folders?

Hi, it's good that you are using imaging- too many don't. You may think I'm evading the issue, but there is a steady trickle of reports here on Backup and Restore (Windows 7) which is what I will assume you are using.

A number of experienced people here have come to believe it is somewhat unreliable. Better solutions are found with 3rd party disk imaging such as Macrium Reflect (free/commercial) + its boot medium + external storage.

- much more feature-rich
- better platform support
- can be built into Windows boot

Since Viste U upgraded to SP2 the system is giving this message The backup did not complete successfully.

A shadow copy could not be created for the following reasons:

The system is scheduled since months to backup once a week document on a separated HDD and has been working throughout, until SP2 came in....

Back in 2015 I set up a USB 3.0 external HDD for backups, and used Windows Backup for awhile to make weekly backups of the system. It worked for a short while, then the backups started failing, and I never got around to fixing it. I went over a year with no real backup in place.

Now I'm trying to get the backups going again, and so far have been unsuccessful at every turn.

I have removed all previous contents from the USB drive and reformatted the drive several times today. Every time I run Windows Backup and set it up to run at 1 AM every day, it starts the backup immediately I guess to create the initial backup, and after 1-2 hours it errors out with error 0x81000037, and the message: "The backup was not successful. The error is: Windows Backup failed while trying to read from the shadow copy on one of the volumes being backed up. Please check in the event logs for any relevant errors. (0x81000037)."

I did some reading and thought the problem was caused by choosing to backup the root C: drive plus several of the subfolders on C:. I tried NOT checking the root C:, and instead only selected a few of the subfolders. That didn't work.

I tried not backup up C: at all, and instead only backing up my user profile folder and the entire D: data HDD, plus checked the option to make a system image of C:. Still no good.

Any other suggestions what to try? I had a catastrophic HDD failure in 2009 with no backup in place, and I'd rather not go through that again.

I turned off UAC, I turned off Malwarebytes, also Kaspersky Internet Security 2011.

This only started happening a few days ago after installing WINDOWS UPDATES.

I have NOT added any new software.

I have a 500 gb External HD that I have the backups overwrite the old one so as not to fill it up.

Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated,

I keep getting the above error when trying to make a backup of my files from the C:\ to my separate A:\ drive. My A:\ has folders and files on it-could this be causing the failure? I have more than enough room to allow for a backup.

I get the message "the last backup did not complete successfully" accompanied by an error code of 0x81000031 . The first time this happened I thought it was simply because I didn't do a clean install. I do the clean install and the backups happen every day at 4 in the morning like clockwork. I get about 7 consecutive backups to go and now suddenly this message pops up everytime I attempt to do another backup. Is there any way at all that I can possibly completely delete the backup on my drive and have Windows just start over from scratch or does anyone know how I could just get the backups to continue again as they normally did?

The issue was: One of the his removable drives (DVD drive) was added to the document library and backup was failing†because it was unable to backup that removable location as part of document library. Recently, I had to use Gateway System Recovery to fix my laptop; I chose the option that saved my data; and I have reloaded all the software and etc. Windows XP is my operating system, and I have Office 2003. After the recovery, I moved the backup files that were created by the recovery to the Shared Document folder. Every time I try to access any of my previous folders or files I get the following message: user does not have access privileges. I am logged in as administrator. What is the problem? HELP!!!

i have a windows vista home basic in a compaq presario notebook
i made a backup using the recovery manager and formatted using the recovery to get the factory conditions. now i have restored the backup of about 60gb made on an external hard disk.
but now it shows access denied when i try to open any file that has been restored.
The files are stored in a folder (system recovery files) in the c: drive.
i have copied one of the files to desktop but it shows access denied when i try to open that file.
all the files of format .jpg , .mp3 , .txt etc are not opening
please come up with a good solution asap

i am in urgent need of the files

I have no idea. This seems to be a theme recently where nobody's back-up program will allow them to access the files.

The only two ideas I can come up with are 1, you should re-post this in the "Windows" forum. And 2, get with support of the external drive manufacturer. There may be encryption of file involved when writing to the external drive .

i have just completed the first full backup on my laptop. There are the usual VHD backup folders on the backup disk and I think I know from previous backups on other computers that there is a specific procedure required to view the contents of these. However, there is also a list of other files/folders which are Open Office documents and when I attempt to open these to view the contents an "Access Denied" message comes up.
Would anyone know why this occurs and if there is a 'work around' to open these documents?

"timed backup access denied you do not have sufficient rights to files in this folder" The program is WordPerfect 9 and the files is on the users home directory which she has full rights too. I've searched the Corel knowledge base without finding any mention of this error, has anyone here encountered this before??

Hi everyone, I backed up an image of my drive before I reformatted Windows 7, using Easus Todo Backup. Everything went fine, except the problem is when I mount the drive to access it, I cant access the user folders. It says access is denied, and that I have to reconfigure the user permissions. There doesnt seem to be any way to configure it so that I can access them, however. I have tried: naming my computer and workgroup to the same name as it was before, tried accessing as administrator, and tried accessing them in safe mode. Any help would be great.

You can't change the permissions in the backup, it gets mounted as Read only. Since you re-installed Windows, the accounts that had access no longer exist (the account is more than just the name and password).

Can you copy the entire User folder to your hard drive someplace? Then you can take ownership and change permissions.

If it won't let you copy the User folder, you'll have to restore the image to a drive so that you can take ownership and change permissions.

While performing a restore on a Gateway, the system performed a backup of the HD, then it commenced to re-install WinXP. Just when the re-install was to finish the system locked up. I had to turn off PC, it finished with install but now I have a directory called 'Backup myname date'. I can open the directory and see all the files with the exception of 'My Documents', I get Access Denied. How can I get around this.

I'm getting the following error: Backup Exec 10.d - Access denied to file **
It's pretty much happening for all Exchange "mailboxes".

What I've done so far:

1. Rebuild backup job
2. Test Resource Credentials
3. Added Backup Exec user w/Admin rights -
This account will be used as the backup exec logon account
*I'll find out tomorrow if this #3 fixes the problem
I tried using the "TEST" run - took too long

Any other ideas?????

I've tried to create a backup of my computer files on an external hard drive three times but I get the same error message each time. Microsoft Security Essentials pops up and tells me that it caught a Trojan (Karagany.G) lurking in one of the shadow copy files. I'm the administrator, no other user accounts on this laptop, so I don't understand why I don't have access to all my files as the error says.
This is the directory that always pops up: file:\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy61\Users\cjlanc\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\55\63ca7fb7-144752c8 It's driving me insane. Some help please?

Receiving access denied errors when restoring emails that were backup to tape using Backup Exec 11d. The error states is "access denied to directory user. Top of Information Store. Inbox.

The account I am using are members of the following group:

1. administrator

2. Domain Admins

3. Domain User

4. Enterprise Admins

5. Exchange Admins

6. Exchange Domain Servers

7. Exchange Services.



Anti Virus software turned off.



It also has Exchange Full Administrator privileges and not hidden from GAL



Why is this not working?

Dell Studio 1747 with I7, 4 core processor, 8GB ram, Win 7 Pro. When I try to back up my user folder, I get the msg-You must have administrator rights to change this folder (CardSpace). I can't find this folder, even by search. I have gone into the properties of my user folder (William) and made sure I have all rights, and changed the ownership (security tab, owner tab). All I want to do is be able to backup my data.

You can't backup the entire profile folder since it contains system files that are continually in use. Back up your Documents, Music, Pictures, etc.

Following a hardware upgrade we reinstalled software and attempted to restore data from the old drive now housed in an external caddy. Everything was able to be accessed apart from payroll backups.

The backup payroll files, indeed all the files within the payroll directory can not be moved even using Windows Explorer...the error message "Access Denied Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use" keeps appearing. No other files on the drive seem to be affected.

Is there any way we can change the access rights to this directory? The software in question is Sage Payroll (current version).

I restored a backup of the "documents and settings" to a new install of XP but when I try to access the primary (preffered customer) folder I get 'C:\Documents And Settings\Preffered Customer is not accessible. Access is denied'. This folder originally asked for a password, which was blank (ie. hit enter). Is there something I can do in the registry or am I stuck with a unaccessable backup (all the my docs, pics etc.)?

Hi,
I got an image (acronis) from the hd from my old PC which was stolen. I can mount the backuped partitions as logical drives on my new computer. I can explore them, but all files in my personal documents directory cannot be opened or copied, because access is denied. I followed instructions, mentioned elsewhere in order to 'take ownership' of those files (properties/security/advanced/owner) but when I click the owner-tab I already get a warning that I can only view the current owner. And indeed there is no way to change that. Of course I'm administrator. I have the same user name on the new computer as I had on the old one (which does not help, obviously).
Any advice? Needless to say that I really need those files...

3 computers, desktop running Ultimate and backing up to AC-powered external drive and 2 laptops running Professional and back up to USB-powered external drives.. Backups set for full data and included system image for all 3..

No problem with desktop (which backs up daily), but unable to successfully back up either laptop since Windows Update installed SP-1. Fails as below:

Error: 0x80070005 - Access denied

Both laptops were set to run backups once a week (since the external drives are not plugged in at all times).. and, never had a problem with the backups failing before..

No changes were made before or after SP-1, checked permissions, all set to Full Control, log in as Administrator with UAC off (only one using the computers).. Ran chkdsk on both laptops and both external drives and no problems found.. Ran sfc /scannow and also clean for both..

Tried disabling all non-Microsoft services except for anti-virus and bluetooth (mouse is bluetooth) on one laptop and backup still failed with the same error.. Seems to get to approx 97% - 99% before it fails..

Have found older posts referecing making sure the D: drive is not set for backup or system restore.. Have never used it, backups have always been to the external drives (L: on one laptop and H: on the other).

Other than a problem with the fingerprint reader on 1 laptop after the SP-1 update (had to go back and install the original HP driver), SP-1 seems to be fine and do not really want to un-install.. Not sure if I even... Read more

Hey there,

Basically my backup system (Symantec Backup Exec 11d For Windows Servers) has been running daily scheduled backups, as normal, however In the Job history log where it shows each job that has run - it states that it has failed.

From what I know, that the backup itself has run fine, just that it continues to produce the following error:

Okay... this happened on my computer and is an error I've never seen before. I've some some searching on the net and the solutions / reasons don't seem to match.

What happened?
I'm doing some heavy house cleaning on my 500GB drive (4 partitions).
The last partition (E is the one I'm doing the most work on. I had cleaned up up and backed up onto external drives about 60GB of very old data. So the partition (240GB) was now using 120GB of space.

It needed heavy defragging... so speed things up and less wear & tear of constant R & W - I decided to COPY the data to an external Backup drive, re-format the partition (to also reduce the size of the MFT - which was about 1GB) and copy the data back.

Thats when I get the "The format did not complete successfully" window.

Even using Drive Management, I get the same error. Fast or slow format, same thing. I've removed the drive letter, given it a new one... same thing!

Drive layout is:
Primary System = C:
Logical = D: G: E: (Games are in G
Status = HEALTHY for all

About half my drive is now useless. Rest of computer is fine.

If I can't resolve this, then I'll have to WIPE the whole drive clean and reinstall from scratch.. which I don't have time to do right now.

Hi,
recently on my pc I have added a new ssd drive, moved the os to such drive, reorganized the partitions among ssd and hdd, moved files and programs accordingly, changed some drive letters. Everything seems to work fine, however when I try to check windows health something seems wrong (I translated the output):

I'm getting a little frustrated here. The last 4 machines I've attempted to perform a system restore on have failed on every restore point. The first 3 were Windows 7, the one I attempted today was Windows 8.1. The first 3 were attached to a domain, the
Windows 8.1 is in a workgroup. Restore didn't work in safe mode either. I know I can turn System Restore off, reboot, and turn it back on, but I'm dealing with a problem that I'm pretty sure could be quickly resolved if this work. Anyone else facing this?
Is there anything else I might try? Thanks

To confirm that the Restore Points system was working I created a new restore point and used System Restore to "go back" to it. I got the message in the attachment. I then tried to go back to one about 5 days ago with the same result. In past years I have a couple of times been saved by going back to an earlier restore point. A clean install of Windows 10 + Anniversary UG was done about 10 days ago and programs and settings returned as before (after the fitting of an SSD).
EDIT: I have disabled Malwarebytes (by preventing it loading at startup) and Kaspersky Internet Security (by switching it off).

What can I do please to get system restore working?

Does Kaspersky have a self protection module? Norton does & unless I disable that system restore fails - disabling AV protection isn't enough. If Kaspersky does then that's preventing restore from working.

Do you have Norton software or any other security products? With Norton, you may have to off "tamper protection" for System restore to complete successfully. Other security product have a similar "self protection" feature that "resists" modification and that's what system restore is trying to do.Note: After doing a system restore, the security product may "break" because of a conflict of new and old files. You will have to re-install your security product after a restore. For Norton, use the Norton removal and reinstalling tool.

I purchased an Asus Transformer book which came installed with windows 8. I noticed a problem early on that it has not been able to install updates successfully. At some point I attempted to install each update one at a time and reboot in-between. at this point i had about 50 waiting but none would install. 
 
I currently have 80 important updates that are waiting to install. any suggestions on how to proceed.

Hello. These are the error messages that I get on my Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate PC and the different steps that I have performed:

"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computerís files and settings were not changed. Details: System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point. Source: %SystemRoot%\registration Destination: ComPlusStaging."

I ran the file checker tool (sfc.exe) from the command prompt and no missing or corrupted files were reported. I got a confirmation that no problems were found.

In the services.msc console, I was able to set the COM+ System Application to "Automatic", but when I tried to start it manually, I got this error message: "Windows could not start the COM+ System Application service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start control request in a timely fashion."

I uninstalled the .net Framework software and resinstalled the latest 4 version.

I rebooted the computer many times throughout the troubleshooting process.

I turned off MS Security Essentials (Anti-virus) to see if this would resolve the situation, but to no avail.

I tried doing a system restore from the Windows 7 Installation DVD, using the repair option, but I got exactly the same "ComPlusStaging" error message.

Hello everyone, 
When starting, my computer shoes a message error "System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed." It's running on windows 7. By going over the internet, I got the idea that it has something to do with the anti-virus blocking the startup. Apparently I need to unable it. However, I don't know how to do it with a command line (cannot access the desktop). Does anyone knows how to do so?

sometimes you just need to select a different day's restore point.  they don't always work, sometimes i have to try 2 or 3 before i get a successful restore.

Now a lot of my programs won't run, such as Acrobat Reader, Izarc, etc, (for instance if I try to open a PDF the icon just flashes for a second and then nothing happens. No error message, but the program doesn't open either). I've restarted a dozen times. And got an error message for every system restore point I tried (I had 4 of them), which says System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed, and then somthing about running a chkdsk/r command. When I did that it got stuck at 10% for hours! So I rebooted and bypassed it by tapping the spacebar (had to watch a youtube video to solve that one).
 
3 Days prior to this my Webroot caught and deleted/quarantined two malware programs: Youtube Accelerator and ShopperPro. I do not know if these are the cause or not.  I'm wondering if these are known to cause system restore corruption, or if there is still a virus floating around in my computer.
 
Also, I ran sfc scannow and it tells me in the log that it cannot verify a bunch of my registry keys. I don't know enough about registry keys to know if that's normal or not.
 
Also, as of today, all of my previous system restore points are gone.

Update: I ran a different scan, sfc scan (something like that) and it tells me I have a bunch of registry stuff it "Cannot verify." I will post the log if anyone wants to see it.
 
I am not good enough at computers to know how to replace those. To make matters worse, all of my system restore points are gone now.  Also, the programs that are working are doing very funny things, such as displaying in the inverse. It dawned on me that on saturday night--the day before this all happened--I cleaned up my iphone but dumping nearly 8 gigs of photos onto the computer. I don't know if this caused the issues, but other than that I didn't do anything new.

Background: I'm having a problem with Saving download files on IE10, but Run or Open works [Later: see my reply]. I foolishly clicked Run on a program on Tucows, and it installed a bunch of crap on my system. I've checked for viruses, all clean.

The problem: I tried to do a System Restore, but got this message:



I tried from Safe Mode, and from the F8 menu, same result.

I removed all the crap from Tucows manually, ran CCleaner, deleted all the Restore Points, turned off System Restore, rebooted, turned it back on, made a new Restore Point to test.

Now when I try to restore, its tells me that System Restore is turned off (it isn't).

Suggestions?

Fixed it!

First of all I did a reinstall of Silverlight for the original problem.

Then did the stuff in the first reply to this thread, then turned System Protection off and on again.

[Later] These actions have also fixed my IE10 download issue!

So I have bought a dock station and i have 2 hard drives of 500gb.
I used the disk management to try to format and many other solutions, like other programs to format them but no success so far...
the hard drives are in RAW and i can?t format to NTFS or FAT32.. have read dozens of threads... but nothing...

any recommendations?

Before visitors arrive I always set a restore point and restore my Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit system after hey leave.

This time I got a message:

Earlier restore point = same

Earliest restore point = OK.

Can you tell me what's going on? What should I do next time?
