Frequent Disconnects from Internet

Q: Frequent Disconnects from Internet

Hi everyone,

I posted a while back that I was having frequent disconnects from the Internet with my DSL connection and a Westell 7500 modem. The problem is always solved by turning off the modem, waiting 1 minute, and turning the modem back on, although sometimes I have to do this a couple times. There are also periods of time when the Internet is extremely slow for hours.

I ran several tests from the website that was recommended and the results are below. The first is when the Internet was running decently well. The next 2 are when it was extremely slow.

http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2570317

http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2573289

http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2573301

My modem is plugged into an arbitrary phone jack and I use the wireless connection for my computer. There are no phones or other gadgets plugged into any other phone jacks. I did find the Telco box outside the house on the first floor but I did not want to plug the modem directly in because I would have to leave it outside hanging somehow in the cold and I didn't want to play around with opening it and such.

Can anyone interpret what these tests mean and what is my next step? Thanks!!

Preferred Solution: Frequent Disconnects from Internet

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a 1 MBPS Broadband Internet connection with perfect speed at all times, however, since a couple of weeks, I am facing this weird problem:

Every 2-3 hours (more sometimes), my perfectly fine Internet suddenly disconnects for around 20-30 seconds then starts working perfectly. It cannot even be noticed because there is no "disconnected" sign on the Local Area Connection icon in the taskbar but it becomes extremely problematic while playing online games, downloading things, transferring files, etc. because it just disconnects me everytime and reconnects after 30 seconds and creates a mess. Also, I've noticed my IP address (last 2-3 digits) keeps changing after every disconnection.

I've complained to my ISP several times and they are not doing anything about it. I'm not even sure about whether it is a problem at their end or my end.

Any help is deeply appreciated. Here's a screenshot of my IP address' PING when it disconnects:

My laptop ( Acer 5672WLMi ) has recently started having some odd problems and since I have recently had a virus epidemic on my desktop ( Virut and others ) I thought I might find something on it as well.

I have ran several scans using McAfee Virus Scan and Internet Security, as well as Exterminate-It and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and Ad-aware. They all came up clean except for a couple of tracking cookies.

The main problem I am having is staying connected to the Internet with my wireless adapter. After a random amount of time, sometime between 2 minutes and an hour, web pages will stop opening, and I cannot get to anywhere on the internet even though it says I am still connected. I end up having to right-click on the Network Connection Status icon in my tooltray and select repair to get it to work again.

Recent error messages similar to what i had on my desktop before it's big meltdown have popped up too..

Heya; I just had my system checked out by the kind people in the Malware forum, but it doesn't seem like there's any bugs hiding on my computer, so Broni said I should probably post here instead.

I've been having a problem with my internet - it's sort of an old contract that we've got with AT&T, I think, and it usually holds up for non-serious gaming; but recently, I've been having all sorts of issues with getting disconnected frequently from both games and the router alike.

I have both a Rosewill 2x PCIE wireless adapter card and a Netgear 111v3 usb stick to try and use to connect to the internet, but when I've used one or the other, I haven't had much luck. The internet'll be relatively quick for a few minutes, and then die down; more precisely, I might get 5-10mbs for a couple minutes after connecting, and then end up somewhere around .5mbs. ...Unfortunately, .5mbs isn't even really enough to navigate one or even two tabs on Firefox efficiently.

I originally installed the driver that was on the CD that came with my Rosewill card - I only added it into my desktop recently, since the Netgear's frequent overheating made for something of a hard limit to how much internet I could use - but I've downloaded a more recent driver from the Rosewill website as of last night, and for the time being, it seems like my internet's tentatively alright.

Could all of this have just been an issue with my card driver?... Read more

Okay, this will probably be long, and it is my first post, but I want to get everything covered.

I moved into a new apartment about a month ago. This apartment is set up with a wireless internet provider by the name of Airwave. I have a PC, so I had to get a wireless adapter. I chose the D-Link DWL-G510 Wireless PCI Adapter (rev. b), because Airwave recommended it because all the routers and such here in the complex are D-Link. I followed all of the install instructions, then put the wireless adapter in my PC. I went through the add new hardware wizard, and I was connected to the internet. And hour or two later though, I got disconnected. But then 30 minutes would pass, and I would reconnect. Now, during this disconnects, the network icon in the task bar would say my signal strength was excellent, and that I was still connected, yet all programs requiring internet (AIM, FireFox/IE, Thunderbird, etc...) would not function, as if there were no internet connection. This problem has persisted still to this day.

In addition, this Airwave was advertising "High Speed Internet" and to the contrary, I felt it would go rather slowly. Some internet speed tests (CNET and PcPitstop) would report usually between 200-300 kpbs. So after many calls to the service provider, I find out it should be running between 1500 and 3000 kbps. For some reason beyond me, I now find out I am running 10 times slower than I should be.

Today, one of the techs in this area called me, and walked me... Read more

This is my first time on this site, so I hope I'm posting in the correct section. Over the past week I have been experiencing frequent disconnects in my internet service. I have called my ISP four times since this began, which resulted in them giving me a new Modem, and replacing the Filter on the outside of the house, but none of this has helped the issue.

I especially notice the disconnects when I am playing on-line games (World of Warcraft, League of Legends), and it causes any and all games to be un-playable. They also occur when I am just browsing web pages. Sometimes the disconnects happen every 5 minutes for an extended period of time, and then I could have steady internet access for up to an hour if I am lucky.

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this problem, please help!! IDK if you need my computer specs, but I've pasted them below.

I work at home and wired direct but I still use a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. Recently the rounter has been loosing it's connection. I decided to go out and get a newer N version linksys WRT120N. I just leaned today that to take advantae of N ,the laptops have to have a N technology. None of them do so the N is kind of a waste but they seem to be replacing the G's with them anyway.

I called Linksys and and even after a firmware update the problem stayed the same. They told me, on the next time I was disconnected, to go direct to the modem for a couple days. The direct connection seemed to be fine. I decided to go back to the router and no more than a day or so I was disconnected.

Linksys suggest to go back to the store and replace the unit

Comcast told me that the router can't keep up with IP address refreshing through the day. Comcast said they do that for security reasons.

I'm looking for suggestions even though most salepersons & techs still stick by Linksys

Recently I allowed an upgrade or add-on or something to be installed (from a pop-up request) I believe related to Macromedia. I wish I had taken notes at the time. I believe this is somehow related to my frequent disconnects.

Any suggestions?

This isn't a call for help. Actually, it's a "thank you" to this site and section. I've had frequent internet disconnections for the past 6 months or more -- sometimes 4 or 5 over a 5 or 10 minute period, before everything seemed to settle down. I had tried elsewhere for help, and did everything everybody suggested -- with some improvement. But, the problem seemed to persist. Then a couple of days ago while browsing here I tried one of the suggestions: Connection Keeper, and it has worked perfectly. Not a single disconnect in the last two days since installation.

So, thank you!

I've had issues w/my connection since about 4 months ago. I've contacted tech support of Netgear (my router) multiple times and obviously they cannot find the issue. Maybe 3x/week I will lose my connection and will have to restart the router.
I've gotten a message that 2 pcs are sharing the same IP a few times. I believe there are internal and external IPs and I think one is the same as the wired PC downstairs. The tech people said that wasn't an issue (!)
I was told by a friend to go into cmd and release the IP but I didn't want to do that until I posted here.
Below is some additional info and a snapshot of the IP message.
It was told to me that my modem (I have a separate router and modem) is also a router...so I basically have 2 routers. The tech guy said that was also not an issue.

----------

*Connection: Wireless-my computer. Though the connection issue involves all the computers. One wired, 2 wireless. And my smartphone, as well as my laptop when I'm using it. So in total that would make 4 wireless, 1 wired.

*ISP: ATT

*Connection type: DSL

Router:
Netgear
model: R6300v2
Smart wifi router

Modem/router:
DLink
model: DSL-520B

My wireless pc: Avira

About every 10-15 minutes, my internet connection slows down, then stops for a few seconds and comes back. The connection gets so slow and anything else i have open disconnects. If I have AIM open, and I try to use IE, after about 5 to 10 minutes, AIM's connection is lost and it takes forever to load a page. Whenever I use Limewire (which is not much), AIM disconnects after a minute or so, and it ALWAYS happens. BTW, the problem probably isn't related to Limewire, considering I've had Limewire for about 2 weeks and the disconnects have been happening for almost a year. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I am assuming you have dial-up?

Do you have any antispyware programs installed on your system?

I've been with Frontier Internet for little over a year, for the first 8 months or so I was using a Speedstream 6250 modem, and later, after it malfunctioned, I was given a Gigaset SE567, the Speedstream ran flawlessly, and my disconnections were limited, but shortly after I got the Gigaset I began experiencing increasing amounts of disconnects. At first it was minimal, every now and again I would disconnect and I would think nothing of it, but recently it's been much more sporadic, happening dozens of times a day. I contacted tech support and they didn't seem to find any problems with the line, so they dispatched someone who couldn't seem to find anything out of the ordinary either. I've been wondering if anybody else has had this problem and if there are any solutions or tweaks in the settings that would proof beneficial to my situation.

Someone in my family is having an absolutely terrible time staying connected on his dial-up connection. He's even switched ISP's over it, which didn't help. I'm inclined to think the problem's either with the modem (outdated driver?) or a noisy phone line.
The modem is a Rockwell 56K and the system is a Gateway Essential 433C running Windows 98 SE.

I couldn`t have put it it better myself.Disabling call waiting (if enabled) is the other standard suggestion.

Therefore,update/reinstall driver,
Disable call waiting
Check that there aren`t any other electrical devices in the vicinity that might be interfering.
Have phone company check the line.

If those don`t work it looks like the google option - http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=modem+disconnects&spell=1

If there is any way your relation could upgrade to a dsl connection, that would be the best option.

Hey guys, I'm hoping you can help me out with a problem I've been having:

I recently set up a wireless router in order to share my internet connection with a friend of mine. Things work fine most of the time, but these days whenever I use the internet for a while I get disconnected, and I can't access the internet again until I restart my computer completely.

I used to think that it may be because we were both using the internet at the same time that it would disconnect me, but sometimes I am just surfing web pages and it will disconnect me.

I look at the lights on the router and see that it's in heavy use. The internet light and the LAN light (connecting the router to my computer) are flashing intensely. Yet, when I switch off my computer the lights don't flash which means my friend is not using the internet. It is as if my computer keep sending information to the router until it can't handle anymore and disconnects. I really don't know what's going on.

If you could give me any ideas, I'd appreciate it immensely, and if you need any extra information, I'll be happy to post what you need.

Just for reference, the router I'm using is a NETGEAR wiresless router MR814.

Thanks.

I have Verizon DSL and my Internet disconnects almost daily. I have the modem hooked directly into my computer (Westell 7500) and there are no phones or anything else connected to any other phone jack. At first I thought there was something wrong with the modem so I complained and Verizon sent me a new one, same model, but I continue to have the same problem. What happens is that the Internet light will just go out while I am in the midst of using the Internet. I turn it off and leave it off for a minute and then turn it back on and it usually works but it is becoming very annoying and time-consuming. Once it did not work when I turned it on again and I had to call Verizon; they ran a line test and said it was a network issue. It did work again in a couple hrs. Over the past few months I have talked to Verizon technical support at least 20 times and they are never able to figure out the problem but waste significant amounts of time running the same tests. Also, sometimes the Internet light remains on but the Internet stops working. I have to shut off both my computer and the modem and restart both in this instance as just turning the modem on and off does not help.

Des anyone know what could be causing this and what I need to do? Thank you very much!

Hello people of Techguy,

I didn't know which forum to go to, so I decided I'd try here because that's all I really use my internet for. I'm here because I randomly disconnect a lot, and it's random. Somedays I'll disconnect from every other game on my xbox 360 playing black ops. Sometimes I'll even disconnect 5 times from the same match.

Back when I played WoW I would disconnect the same way. It is very annoying and when we first got our internet connection it never happened....ever.

What can I do to fix it? I emailed comcast and they said my internet connection was fine and that if I was using a router, I shouldn't. SO I unplugged the router and plugged the internet cable straight to the xbox 360 and it still had problems. Then my cousin comes home for thanksgiving break and somehow fixes it for a whole day. I have no idea how he did it, but again it started disconnecting.

I will deeply appreciate any help from you men and women.

Hello, here's an explanation of my issue. I will use my online game experience to help.

I get frequent and random disconnects every few minutes lasting several seconds to a minute. I would be playing a game and be able to watch myself die from other players but not be able to do anything about it. It's as if I'm not able to send any data during those disconnects but I can receive data, but after a few seconds of watching myself die the connection stops altogether. Some days I have this problem and some days I don't. It's not like it occurs particularly during high use hours. Sometimes this problem occurs after 11pm at night. Sometimes it happens in the morning at 8am and sometimes during the afternoon. Some days it's perfectly fine and I have a stable connection. This is beyond frustrating and I don't know enough to have an idea at what may be the cause.

I have Cox High Speed Internet and in their business policy it says they don't shape or throttle bandwidth so I'm guessing it's not that. We have recently replaced our old router and still have this problem. The modem is fine also. What is causing these disconnects?

Perhaps try uninstalling and reinstalling Wireless adapter will fix, have you tried that? Or upgrading it's drivers? Also, perhaps your wireless adapter is failing, or a setting is wrong? Do you have access to a USB based wireless adapter to test this theory?

For over a month now, at random points throughout the day my internet goes from working great to "Unidentified network: Local Only". I have tried MANY things and searched many forums to find the fix to this, and nothing stops it from disconnecting time and time again. To get the connection back, I have to restart the laptop. Nothing else works, I've tried resetting and renewing the IP address, disabling QoS and Ipv6, using a different modem, trying to connect through ethernet as well as wi-fi, resetting winsock dhcp, and it all ends up the same. Note that it is not my router, as my PS3 has no such problem, I can play online with it all day. I find it hard to believe that it would be my network card, as both ethernet and wi-fi react the same, I re-installed vista around 2 months ago, and it worked fine for a good while. I've tried restoring to previous dates, which changes nothing, and could try another full restore though I don't know what I could do differently to prevent this, as I don't think I've accumulated any viruses.
I'm running Windows Vista 32 bit edition on a Dell Vostro. ANY help with this is much appreciated, as I usually have no problems solving network issues, but this has me stumped.

Problem: The internet connects fine, but every couple of minutes it will disconnect for a couple of seconds. It's not a big deal when browsing, but it's disastrous when downloading big files or playing online games.

What I've tried so far:
-Resetting the modem. No change.
-Reconnecting the modem/router completely. No change.
-Replacing the main splitter. Slight change, but problem came back eventually.
--Original problem came with the tech's 2 way 5-1002 mhz spliiter.

I have set up my personal laptop (Macbook) on a crossover connection with my laptop at work (Windows XP). My work laptop is connected to the companyís network which doesnít allow personal computers to be connected to. Since the work laptopís internal NIC is connected to the network, I have connected a USB to LAN adapter to the USB port and connect it with the NIC on my macbook via a crossover cable. I set the work laptop IP as 192.168.0.1 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and the macbook IP as 192.168.0.2 and same subnet mask. The connection works fine and I am able to share files between them.

However, 1 very frustrating problem. The crossover connection disconnects and reconnects frequently (every 5-15 minutes). Looking at the Windows XP event viewer, there is a TCPIP 4201 event every time it happens. Here is what the event looks like:

--
Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 4201
Source: Tcpip
Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: EVENT_TCPIP_MEDIA_CONNECT
Message: The system detected that network adapter %2 was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.
--

This would be a normal event if it didnít happen so often, indicating my connection has recovered from a disconnect.

I thought it might be the USB to LAN adaptor malfunctioning so I replaced it with another one: no luck. I thought it might be the crossover cable so I tested it between 2 macs with a gigabit connection and pinged continuously for about and hour but got 0% pack... Read more

Hello All,
I'm using an Inspiron 1012 to connect to a WiFi source which is located in the same building on one floor below.  I often have very slow network response and/or frequent network disconnects.  I'm not exactly sure, but could an outdated NIC be the problem.  Is someone able to diagnose with more certainty, what my problem is and how I can fix it?
Please contact me if you require any further information.

Hi I have also been experinsing these problems. I am a video game player as well and whenever I try to play on my laptop my internet disconnects. But all my other devices that use wifi work fine. Also there is nothing wrong with my computer because it works fine on other networks such as my schools. I recently moved and am now using a different internet provider ,centerylink. I think I have to change my modem channel but centurylinks website were you change modem settings is a scam. The website does not work and my parents think theres something wrong with my computer and are refusing to change internet service providers. So I am wondering how If I can change modem channels a different way.

Hi, You might have another wifi signal very close to your house that is on 'your' channel, it happens.
You can only move your channel to one of three different frequencies, that is the lowest, the middle or the highest one. So say your current channel is 6, there is no point going to 7, it's still too close.
If the 'other' problem wifi channel near you is say '1' then you should try to go to the other end of the range.
You change your WiFi channel in your router, then your laptop will find it.
You don't need a website to do that, it's between your laptop and your router.
You make the changes through any web browser, and the details will probably be on the label of your router.
But this might not the problem, although it's a fairly easy one to 'fix' if it is.

I am using CISCO Anyconnect. But regardless of what VPN, what happens is that connecting to VPN disconnects me from Internet which doesnot happen with XP.

Is there a solution for this with anyone, please.

Hi All
I have been having internet disconnects every since I have had VISTA. It is the same that used to occur in WIN ME & 98. It happens when you spend a long time surfing on one web site. There was a fix for this problem then and I have forgotten it. It is not my server as I have another computer with WIN 98SE and it does not happen. I have to cycle my DSL modem off & on to reconnect. I am connected through a router to a second computer and to the modem and the second computer stays connected. The internet icon (lower right display) will indicate local only is connected.
Any help would be great. Forum

If you're using a laptop or server, the network card may be configured to go into power saving mode releasing the IP address after a set amount of time of non-activity.

Which version of Windows Vista are you using? Vista is known to have plenty of networking issues on it's own so it may be worth searching Microsoft's KB (Knowledge Base) at www.microsoft.com if you're familiar with it.

Also your computer system mentions a Dell E-520 which appears to be a standard desktop PC, would you be able to confirm this?

Finally, if you could post the results of an "ipconfig /all" while the network is connected and then when it becomes unavailable, this would help troubleshoot the problem.

Roden

Hello, I just got a new computer and I'm having internet problems. I used to use an old XP desktop with direct connection and it stayed connected, used my vista laptop with direct connection and it stayed connected, and now with my new W7 desktop the internet does not stay connected. It just disconnects and reconnects in a split second. This interferes while I'm playing games (3 different games), it'll tell me I have lost connection, and when I check my internet connection it says I'm connected. Sometimes I see the little internet connection icon on the bottom say X then a little loading circle then back online in a second. It interferes when I'm streaming also. It happens every 10-30 min or so and it gets REALLY annoying. Anybody have similar problems? Any way to fix?

I have verizon dsl. I open internet explorer, surf for about 15 minutes and all of a sudden i lose my connection. I try to log back on but it will not let me. I reboot and I can get back on for another 15 minutes and it disconects again. I unplugged my modem this time and plugged it back in and I was able to get back on the internet. Any ideas what this could be?

Hi theriffs1

I have Verizon DSL also, I was receiving the Pop up ballon: An network cable has been unplugged about every hour.

I would need to physically reseat the ethernet cable, (are you using an ethernet connection or a USB connection?), finally I purchased a new ethernet cable and that problem went away.

I did call Verizon, they have a free upgrade from 1.5mb/368kbps to 3.0mb/768kbps, it was offered to me without my asking.

Have you tried an ipconfig/release, ipconfig/renew from a command window?

Start > Run
key in:
cmd /k ipconfig
Click: Enter
The information appearing will show you what your IP address is, and how long before it expires.
My IP address renews itself every 15 minutes.

At a command prompt in the same command window key in:
ipconfig/release
Enter
Then key in:
ipconfig/renew
Enter
Your IP address should be renewed.

Have you had any viruses that may have corrupted your Winsock?

Let us know if this makes a difference or not, and if you don't have the upgrade yet, call Verizon and get it!

My internet randomly disconnects for half a second. For instance, most of the time I have ventrilo and mIRC open, and sometimes (a lot of the time) an online game (TF2, CS etc) My internet will disconnect me from all of them at the same time, then I try to get back it and it lets me, so it seems its only disconnecting for like 1 second, then its back on.

When I turn on the Internet (I have a modem), it works fine until I turn other programs on then the Internet basically turns off, but the computer says I'm still connected to the Internet. Why is this doing this and why is the Internet turning off?

If I'm downloading something off the Internet say a game demo or a game update the Internet would just turn off like I said before and then I would have to disconnect and then reconnect and try redownloading and sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't.

I found a pattern or it's just coincidence, but when the downloading box isn't the main thing selected for a while the Internet turns off. Someone please help and don't tell me to ask my ISP he's the other word for donkey.

Hey guys,

As soon as I connect my VPN it disconnects the internet. I'm using a desktop with windows 7, connected to wifi via a Netgear 4600 router. I have two internet connections, one of which is not connected to the router, both connections are affected. Used to work fine and I don't think I have done anything that would cause this. I already looked online and didn't find anything that was helpful.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

hi Boltonsquad I have a similar sounding problem.
My connection to the network is reported as excellent but randomly the actual download speed drops away to nothing.
Does yours "mend " itself after a short while and start working again...or is yours off for good. I find rebooting the laptop resolves it faster than waiting for it to do it itself...until it does it again(not good).
I use a belkin router (number can be supplied when I get home if needed) ..maybe thats the common?

Welcome to TSF.

We will take a look at your system for malware, but it's unlikely the cause of loss of connection. If we can't locate a problem, you will be encouraged to ask for advice in the Networking forum, here at TSF.

Download HiJackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HiJackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose [Do a system scan and save a logfile].
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit [Scan] and then click on [Save log].
3. Post the HiJackThis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HiJackThis since they may be harmless.
