Do you need higher CPU speed to play at higher graphics settings in games?

Q: Do you need higher CPU speed to play at higher graphics settings in games?

I have this new PC:
CPU: I-5 2500 (without the 'k') @ 3.3Ghz
GPU: ASUS GTX 580 direct cu II overclocked to 878 Mhz
Motherboard: Intel DH67CL
RAM: APACER 8GB DDR3 @ 1333 Mhz

I was trying to play Rome: Total War (a game made way back in 2004) at max settings and at 1600x900 resolution (which is the max resolution of my monitor) and I get an average framerate of 20 fps, often even lower. So I checked GPU usage during the game, turns out it never reached 20%. But when I lowered the graphics settings, the fps immediately jumped to 60. As far as I can tell from task manager, there seems to be high CPU usage during gaming, but it doesn't tell how much exactly. So does this mean higher graphics settings require faster CPU clocks and not just a faster GPU? Or does it just mean there's a stability problem with my PC that's affecting its performance?

Preferred Solution: Do you need higher CPU speed to play at higher graphics settings in games?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a couple of old games I dug out and would like to try playing again. Namely Diablo 2, Starcraft, C&C Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2.

I remember them running pretty well and looking decent on my 15 inch old monitor. However on my new 21" LCD monitor the games look rough and full of big pixels when played in full screen.

I was wondering if there is any way to play these old games in their best fitting sized window and resolution. Thanks in advance for your help.

I've been having a problem recently with my volume on my laptop, a HP M6-1125dx. I have noticed that slowly over the course of a few days I have to keep turning the volume up higher and higher to have the same volume come out of the speakers. I used to consistantly be able to keep my volume around 15, but now I''m having to turn it up to 40 or 50 after a few days. It goes back to normal after a restart though (even a 'soft' restart) and then blows out my ears because either I've forgotten to turn it down before restarting or windows did it to me automatically.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? I have no idea where I should start since I couldn't find info of anyone having a similar problem.

A:Volume slowly decreases forcing higher and higher volume settings until restart

See if reinstalling the audio drivers helps.

hello everyone, this is my first post so please help!

i just bought a new computer, it was green so i had to install windows, mother board drivers etc, my games worked fine on my old machine but i thought it was time to get a new one and my old pc kept blue screening and it was just high time i bought a new one.

This is my problem, i took my old graphics card (its a radeon ati 5450 hd) and installed it in my new pc, i installed the drivers for it and windows said its working fine, however everytime i play a game on my new pc its unbelievably laggy, i disabled the on board graphics and did everything your meant to do as far as that goes, but nothing seems to work, ive made sure direct x11 etc it seems to have the same lag whether high settings or low settings on a game, what would you think it is? any ideas?

I plan to transfer a JPEG to a CF card to take to Wal-Mart to have 5" x 7" prints made. This JPEG was scanned from a 35mm slide and saved as a TIFF. I saved it further as a JPEG in two sizes: 5332 x 3664 and 980 x 673.

If I were to have two 5 x 7's made, one from the larger JPEG and one from the smaller JPEG, would there be a discernible difference in quality between the prints? How about if I were to have two 4 x 6 prints made? Or two 8 x 10s? Wouldn't I be able to tell the difference more in a larger print? It seems to me, theoretically, that a print made from a 5332 x 3664 file would turn out sharper than one made from a 980 x 673 file. However, if I wouldn't be able to tell the difference, then of course I'd prefer working with the smaller files.

A:Does higher resolution (JPEG) result in higher quality prints?

Hi there,
Hope you guys can help with this. Win 7 Ultimate x64. After booting up and working for a while, the keyboard response will slow down (i.e. you type characters and they don't show up on the screen for up to 30 seconds). Same issue with mouse. So I started monitoring the system and discovered that this happens when explorer.exe uses a lot of CPU resources.
On boot-up, explorer.exe is using about 0.5% of CPU. But as time goes on and I keep working, it starts to use more and more CPU. Eventually, it can get up to 35-40%. When it gets high, that is when the keyboard/mouse response slows down. So I tried this: I opened a Notepad window while monitoring explorer.exe CPU usage. Then I started typing random characters very fast. When I do this, explorer CPU usage drops to less than 1% and the keyboard response returns to normal. However, when I stop typing, the explorer.exe CPU usage immediately starts to go up again. Eventually, it becomes unmaneagable, and I have to reboot. I tried ending and restarting explorer.exe but it made no difference.
It would appear that explorer.exe is running some kind of background task which is consuming much more resources than it should.
You Bleeper guys have any good ideas?
Thanks a bunch,

A:Explorer.exe spirals to higher and higher CPU usage

You could try a claen boot to isolate the problem, have you run the disk checker, sometimes fixes this issue.

which in your opinions is better? a higher resolution and lower textures and details or lower resolution, but higher textures and details. the highest resolution i am able to achieve is 1366x768. so nothing past there

A:Higher Resolution or higher texture/detail?

Well to be honest you're making a sacrifice in either scenario.

Is this particular to a game you're playing? If so, what game? If it's a general question I'd have to say higher resolution with lower details etc. because at the very least a higher resolution allows for greater overall detail.

Depending on the game, of course.

While I understand this happens when doing simple tasks like browsing the web to save battery, this is incredibly anoying while gaming. When I look in task manager, the cpu won't get higher than 0,38 GHz and the usage won't get higher than 14%, while a few days ago everything was working fine, with speeds even up to 2,90 GHz when gaming while the speed decreases when doing simple tasks while browsing to save power. My laptop is almost always plugged in and the power plan is set to highest. I simply want my laptop to be back to the old behaviour, were doing tasks like gaming increases the processor speed while doing simple tasks like browsing decreases the processor speed to save power.

I recently purchased a new computer (parts) from Newegg. My motherboard is an ASRock P45XE,
My processor is an E8400, and I have 4GB of G.Skill DDR2 1066.

In the BIOS settings, I change the FSB of my processor from 333 to 356. Which is 3.0Ghz to 3.21Ghz. Increasing this, changes my DRAM frequency from 1066 to 1138. For some reason, my computer won't function after the BIOS screen with 3.21Ghz AND DDR2 1138.

Although, I am able to run my computer safely at 3.21Ghz and DDR2 854.

So my question is... Should I run my computer at 3.0Ghz and DDR2 1066? Or should I run it at 3.21Ghz and DDR2 854? For the best performance

A:FSB increase or higher RAM speed?

You can OC and manually set a divider in the BIOS to allow you to run your RAM and FSB at different speeds. For your given numbers, you can set a RAM:FSB divider of 8:5.

Your OC may also be limited by your motherboard. But generally speaking, a higher CPU frequency nets a greater boost in performance compared to a higher RAM frequency.

I am currently building a system with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor on an Asus P5B mobo and am currently trying to decide on memory. My budget is about 80 and for that I can get a 1gb dual channel set from a good brand like OCZ but I don't know whether I should get 800mhz CL5 memory or 667mhz CL4 memory for the best performance.

Thanks in advance

A:Lower latency or higher speed ram?

I don't know much about ram timings and speeds, except for my personal shopping research. I THINK that the 800mhz CL5 ram would be better than the 667mhz CL4, but I really have no idea, hopefully someone else on this forum could give you (and me) a better idea of what to look for in ram timings and clock speeds.
The only advice i can give you is this:
That means know what brand the ram is: is the brand trustworthy. Read the reviews and see what the people who have bought that specific ram think about it. And finally read the description very carefully, many sites can sometimes throught you off on their description of the item.
I only say this because of my endless problems with ram over the years, hopefully you can be more succesfull than me.

Good luck

----Also check what kind of warrenty is offered with the ram.

So, I've always kind of had this issue (not something really new). However, after testing my wife's PC to see if it were a router issue or something, I realized I'm in a bad spot. My speed test had my D/L at like .6 Mbps and my U/L at like 1.14. Both spiked during the test around 2.0. Comparing to my wife's PC when I did the test was 14.2Mbps D/L and 3.22 Mbps U/L. Her PC has the hard line into it, while mine is directly connected to the router. The provider goes through her PC, etc.

Is there some tests I could do to find out if it's 1.) My PC 2.) My Router or 3.) Just some settings.

I know for CPUs a higher processor speed is usually better than a slower speed with more cores, I was wondering if the same holds true for GPUs or do other factors come into play.
I ask as I am considering building my own pc and this is one area I cant get my head around. I tried Googling it but just get answers to the same question for CPUs.

A:GPUs more cores or higher clock speed

No, more cores with slower speeds is better is all situations, especially CPU's. That processing can be done in parrallel is the main advantage of multiple cores (aside from the the necessity of them for heat-dissipation).

A:Running Fan higher and higher

Your computer might be overheating. Open the side panel and check for dust.

Read other 2 answers

This has been happening for around 3 days. When I start the computer (desktop) up, the rpm is normal but it slowly starts to speed up. After around 5 minutes, the fan starts moving at a average of 4000rpm and it's really starting to worry me.
I thought it might have been something to do with dust inside the heatsink so I cleaned the dust with a vaccum cleaner. After that, it still wouldn't slow down so I changed the thermal paste. It now slows down a bit but still run at the average of 4000rpm.
I also tweaked with the bios a bit but still no luck.

A:cpu fan rpm slowly gets higher and higher

Hi everyone,

I'm using an integrated graphics card (if I knew better back then I would have bought a dedicated one...) and want to set its shared memory higher.

I go to the UEFI -> Advanced -> Shared Memory (I think) and set the memory from 512MB to 1024. After applying the settings and starting my PC, my monitor screen simply won't turn on, but my PC seems to start normally and also turns off normally.

Is there anything I can do about this or do I have to accept my fate of not being able to go above 512MB, despite being able to select more memory at the UEFI? As the integrated graphics cards is using my ram, the 16GB that I have should be enough for it. I even upgraded my ram from 8GB to 16, in hopes of fixing this issue, but yeah.
Thanks in advance for any help. Let me know if there's more information needed or anything. I'll try to provide it as good as I can.

A:Screen won't turn on when I set my graphics memory higher.

According to the specs for that ASRock Z97 Pro4 motherboard, its Intel HD Graphics 4600 device uses up to 1792 MB of shared memory.

That motherboard has PCI Express 2.0 x16 and PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots for adding a graphics card.

You haven't mentioned the brand name and model number and wattage of the power supply, so that'll have a bearing on what graphics cards you can use.

I've never used Windows 8 and am not familiar with UEFI, so someone else will need to address your "shared memory" issue.

I made a similar thread earlier but then the PC stopped acting so bad. The only thing I did was use DDU to uninstall nVidia drivers and reinstall an older version. Now I have changed my GPU from nVidia to AMD because of the same problem but the problem still persists. The problem is even more serious at the moment. I get a freeze before I can finish a Paragon game. Not only while gaming but the crash appears randomly while browsing internet or once even browsing for files.

The frequency is much higher while gaming though which is the major issue for me. After I force it to reboot it boots up normally but if I rejoin the game it will surely freeze again in a few minutes. I have attached the zip I was told to attach in posting instruction. There are no logs in Minidump folder. I guess because it wasn't a BSOD. I have tried pressing the num lock/ scroll key to see if the PC has actually frozen or its just the display but its the whole system that is frozen.

I have even opened a Microsoft support ticket for this 2 weeks ago only to wait for a reply for an eternity.

I have tested RAM using MemTest. I cannot remember how many tests it was but it took 2ish hours and there were no errors. I do not know what is causing problems. Please help.

It said it could take ATI radeon 8600. So I'm thinking wait I have ATI 9250 and thats higher soooooooooooo. I NEED HELP PLEASE.

Go to BF2 website and make sure you have the latest patch installed for that stupid game. By stupid I mean "nothing but technical problems for everyone that buys it". Your 9250 is supported. Make sure you have the latest drivers for the 9250 from the ATI website and the latest mobo chipset drivers. Also you'll need Direct 9.0c installed (prob on the installation disk).

1440x900 is the native resolution of that LCD monitor, anything higher will not fit on the monitor without panning.

hello everyone, I have a small issue. I have a balistix tracer from crucial. it is pc 4000, 1GB DDR500, In the bios I want the memory clock to run at 400. That is the highest for the board. So I did and it will not go higher than 200. after I changed it to 400, it is still at 200mhz, showing in the memory clock. so is my ram not compatible, is the ram damaged, or are my settings not set right.
thanks rebs51

A:ddr on bios will not set higher than 200

It's DDR ram which stands for double data rate. When operating at 200MHz, it's as effective as running at 400MHz since it can use the rising & lowering part of the clock cycle to transfer data.

It's sold as 400, as it's a bigger number & people like big numbers but it's supposed to run at 200MHz so there's nothing wrong there.

A:Higher Ping

Hello Fiery, welcome to the forum.

Ping is the amount of time that takes for a packet to get from you to the server and back to you. The farther the server is from you, the higher the ping time is going to be. Doing a traceroute will tell you where the slowest segments are, but since no human being picks your path, you can't do anything about it. It's the internet routers - the ones that make sure that every packet will eventually reach its destination even if half the internet disappears - that choose the route.

What I suggest you to Call the ISP. If you get the typical run a round ask to speak with a supervisor. Tell them you are experiencing a high ping when you test the connection. They may send a technician out to test the line, could be something that is beyond your control and you will be happy after you called.

While doing a repain on the Win7 drive from within Windows, I decided to take a look at Vista's WEI to see what the difference was.
turns out it was BETTER.
If I has the same score for the CPU, then my WEI on 7 would be 3.0 and not 2.2. but it's not.
Can anybody guess why?
Windows 7:

Vista (see attachment):

Why is it CRT had resolution higher than LCD?

Also why it it 98% of monitors do not have resolution higher than 1920x1080 .Only some CRT have much higher resolution but you cannot find these monitors in the store it is not for the public.

Well these are not for the public the highest is 1920x1080.

And LCD has problems with higher resolution .

A:Why is it CRT had resolution higher than LCD

The higher resolution (above 1920x1080) in CRT consumes lot of power and releases huge amounts of heat and so not advisable for public use.

LCD dissipates less heat and consumes less power than CRT even at high resolution. It will take some time before even higher resolution LCD come to the market since LCD technology is developing very fast.

After upgrading my power supply from a Thermaltake 430w to a Corsair TX650W I've seen my CPU and GPU temps increase by 5-10C. Why did this happen?

If anything I expected my temps to be lower with the new PSU as it has a fan on the bottom, while the old one didn't. The old PSU came with my case which has intake and exhaust fans controlling the airflow, would the tx650w be interfering with that somehow?

This is my case http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Chassis/midtower/soprano/vb1000sws.asp
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5200+
8800GTS 320MB

old PSU:
CPU core idle temps were around 37-42 and load temps 57-59
GPU idle temps 65-69 (fan at 60%), load temps 86-89

new PSU:
CPU core idle 42-47, load 59-62
GPU idle 75-79, load is about the same as with old psu, havn't done proper stress testing yet though

The higher temps forced me to lower my already small CPU overclock as well (2.7ghz down from 2.8 - 2.6 is stock). Fans are working as they were and heat sinks have been recently cleaned of dust.

Judt replaced my Voodoo5, (boohoo), today with an ATI 9000Pro. Now I can`t get my res. higher than 800x600. I used to be able to with the Voodoo. I have an older monitor, but it worked before. When I change it to 1024x768 under advanced options, the screen acts like its larger than the monitor. Any help would be great.

P.S. No 1024x768 option under ATI taskbar launch.

Thanks, RiverDan.

A:Can`t set res. higher than 800x600

I had this its down to Drivers. Look in system properties and see if your monitor is correctly installed if it is check Voodoo is correctly installed. If there ok look for a newer monitor or graphics drivers.

Could anyone plz tell me which board I could use for the Opteron cpu? Im looking for an upgrade but Custom PC magazine recommend the Opteron 144 but Im not sure of which board to use it with.

My choice of motherboard is the Asrock dual agp/pci-e/sata2 board that uses skt 939 processors.

Any tips?

A:Skt 939 Opteron 144 Cpu And Higher

I don't think you really want a board that supports AGP and PCIe.
The AGP on those boards go through the south bridge, so what you really get is a PCI slot that takes an AGP card.

My motherboard is a budget board of sorts, the Chaintech Zenith VE, with the Nforce4 Ultra chipset. Its a great board.

A friend has a Dell dimension 4300 and cannot get more than 16 bit color in Display.I installed the correct driver for the monitor. How can I get higher than 16 bit color? I thought it was a monitor problem so purchased a new monitor. However, same problem.

A:Can't Get Higher Than 16 bit Color

Do you mean 16 colour or 16bit colour? They aren't the same thing. If you can only get 16 colours then you need to reinstall the videocard drivers.

First off hi TechGuy members!

I have a 4 MB connection and my ping in certain games is around 95-105 ping
Now, other people in my same country that play on the same server have a 2 MB connection yet they have around 80 ping
There was also this guy I met today which said he has 4 MB and he had 60 ping.

I use a D-Link router
Can someone please tell me if there is any settings I have wrong?
Could this page be a problem since I played with it before: http://prntscr.com/42xjll
The download speed is 400 kb which is what it should be, so please tell me what to do and thanks!

A:Ping higher than it should be

Hi JoeSmR, and welcome to TSG.

Ping time has very little to do with how fast your connection is to you service provider and more to do with the path and how many stops the data has to make as it travels over the Internet between the game server and your computer. You have no control over this and it can change from moment to moment.

Assuming you are using some version of Windows, try running a TRACERT command to the game server's IP address. Each hop will show the ping time to each router, including your own, along the path to the server.
