WD Passport Drive USB 3.0 Powered but Not Recognized

Q: WD Passport Drive USB 3.0 Powered but Not Recognized

Another issue with the laptop: the Passport drive is not recognized in the USB 3.0 connector on this laptop, but it is on the 2.0 connector. The USB cable I am using is the one that came with it, it has the blue part and sticker that says 3.0.

I was able to put this drive onto the laptop in the 3.0 connector yesterday but not anymore. I tried disable and re-enable the USB Controller but that didn't work.

When I plug it into the 3.0 connector, it actually does get power to the drive - the light comes on and I can hear it spin, its just that Windows 10 won't see it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I purchased a Passport 160 gb drive to back up everything on my Dell Dimension 4400 (OS is WinXP Home). When I plugged it in, the blue light came on but that's all. There were supposed to be some drive utilities installed automatically, but apparently that didn't happen. The drive did not show up in "My Computer" and wasn't listed in Windows Explorer either, so there was no way I could get to it. However, in Disk Management the drive was listed as "Disk 2". It was one FAT 32 partition which I then proceeded to change to 4 NTFS partitions. In Device Manager, it shows up as "Mass Storage Device". Western Digital suggested that my computer might not be putting enough power to the USB ports as the drive requires just over 1,000mA and some computers only provide about 500mA. I bought a power booster cable that has two Type A connectors and one Type B mini connector so in theory you can draw power from two USB ports. That didn't solve the problem. I plugged the Passport drive into another computer and it worked fine, so the drive and the cables are OK. I borrowed a USB hub with it's own power connector and four ports. It didn't work there either. WD also said that I should be sure to have the latest BIOS and driver updates. Any comments?

This Tech Support Guy forum is a major disappointment. No response to my question in almost two weeks.

Fortunately, I didn't limit my search for an answer to just this forum. I received many responses and two solutions from a couple of other forums. As a courtesy, I am posting the solutions so anyone who might be interested can expand their knowledge base.

#1 I have Tweak UI installed on my system and after one suggestion I received, I checked "drives" under My Computer (in Tweak UI) and found drive J (my Passport drive) listed without a question mark on it, but the box next to it was not checked. When I checked the box, I immediately had access to my new Passport drive. One quick & simple solution.

#2 The other solution was a bit more complex but equally effective. This is what I received from another forum participant:

"I had the same problem and it was solved in a slightly detailed way.
But first do the following:
With the computer turned on, insert a USB flash drive and see if it is recognized in 'My Computer'. If not continue below:

Do the registry keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer
contain an entry 'NoDrives' that's either called ReG_Binary or REG_DWORD
with a Non-Zero digital word like, for example, 02 ff ff 03?
If it does change the binary word to 00 00 00 00 and save and reboot.

Dell Precision 4300 laptop T9300 2.5ghz processor running windows XP pro. Have a WD 400 passport external drive (powered through usb) that worked great for 6 months. Having problems recognizing the drive on usb port. Have a powered Hitachi drive that fine in the same port. Took WD passport and placed it on another computer and it works fine. When plugged into my laptop I can hear it fire up and the indicator light is on. WD troubleshot with me and we eliminated my drivers etc and same result. They warrantied the drive and new one has same issue. Tried a different cable. Dell troubleshot with me and diagnosed bad motherboard. Tech came to house and replaced motherboard with same results. Flashed bios and removed/installed drivers again same result. Drive will appear under device manager butI can't get to it. Part of my computer will lock up when drive in port and unfreeze when I pull it out. Also will see drive appear under my computer when removing usb cable. If I remove usb drivers and power up with WD plugged in occasionally I will be able to get to unit but it will freeze.

A:Satellite T110 - USB powered CD/DVD drive not recognized in BIOS

Hey,

I don?t have the notebook in front of me but check the BIOS if you can find an option called ?USB legacy support?. If yes you have to enable this feature that your notebook can recognize the external drive.

Can you boot from an USB stick? I mean you can also create the recovery files on an USB stick so this would be also an option to restore factory settings.

I have the same drive with no issues. There is a WD SES Driver that should get installed when this device is hooked up from Windows 10, would be listed below Universal Serial Bus Controllers in Device Manager and only visible when hooked up unless you select under View in the Menu and check "Show Hidden Devices". Also shown as WD My Passport in Disk Drives in the Device Manager. Show in Devices and Printers and on taskbar notification area as Safely Remove?

Seems like you said you deleted or uninstalled all USB Hub, USB Mass Storage and USB SuperSpeed Hubs from Device Manager and rebooted to reinstall and this did not work.

Since your upgrade have you updated Chipset drivers for your system and any other important system driver ? Do you see under Universal Serial Bus Controllers - USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller.

Hello,

I have a 1TB WD My Passport that's suddenly not recognized.

When I plug it in, I hear the "ding" sound that it's recognized. It appears under Device Manager > Disk Drives.

It does not appear on Disk Management and My Computer.

I've tried different ports, cables and laptops.

Any possible step I might've missed? It's full of data and I really don't want to lose them.

Thanks!

If you can detect the WD drive in Disk management just right-click and choose assign path or drive letter and there it goes on to display in My Computer I dont know if something similar can be done under the Device Manager at all.......
Otherwise there could be a way via the WD Website to update the passport or drivers or something

Hi all,

In the process of installing a new Win 8.1 machine, going mostly OK, but I have a WD Passport Ultra that is not working with it at all. I plug it in, it lights up and spins, but never shows up as a drive either in "This PC" or in disk management; nothing at all in device manager either. I would have said defective unit, but it works perfectly on all my other installs including Vista, 7, 8.0 and even a Mac! Don't know what to do here, I can certainly access the files on another machine and transfer, but I would like to use this drive with the new machine...

Any ideas?

Thanks, --ch

A:WD Passport Ultra not recognized - at all!

For some odd reason between Window 8 and WD's Passport drives, they tend to somehow mysteriously drop their drive letters. I've had this happen to me on an older (less than a year drive) and a brand new one I got for Christmas.

Anyway go into Disk Management and check to see that the drive is showing and it has a drive letter. It it's showing but has no drive letter, assign one and your issue should be resolved.

If the drive isn't showing, make sure your cables are good, and not too long as this will also cause the drive not to show up.

Good luck.

Left click or right click?

I recently bought a WD Passport 500 GB external drive and during the first backup the USB cord came unplugged. Now my computer won't recognize/freezes whenever I attempt to access the drive. It shows up in Device Manager correctly but in Windows Explorer it only shows as Local Disk. When I try to access it in Disk Management the program freezes. I tried reassigning the drive letter by changing the letter of another drive, which worked on one computer in that I could now see the passport show up in disk management, but attempting to do anything else caused disk management to freeze.

I downloaded the diagnostic test from the WD website but it freezes when the passport is plugged in. I can't access it to reformat it. I've tried different USB ports. I tried starting the computer with the drive plugged in, but that only caused the computer to attempt to boot from it.

Since this was my first backup with this, I could care less if the information is saved. If there is anyway to completely wipe the drive and start over again, that would be fine. From what I can tell the backup was partly successful, so I would prefer not to have to send it back where someone smarter than me can then access my files. Any help would be appreciated!

Having kind of a strange problem with my external HDD. I have two USB ports on the front of my case which I normally use to connect the drive (Passport 250GB). For some reason when I plug it in to either of these ports the drive does not work. It powers on but I can hear clicking and nothing happens on-screen. Plug it into one of the rear ports and it works fine! I don't get it. All of my other USB devices (thumb drives, USB headset, card reader) work fine on these two front ports so it's not making any sense. I use this drive primarily for school, and my rear ports are in use for other devices, so I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

A:WD Passport Not Recognized on 2 USB Ports

Do you have anything else connected to those front ports? That drive gets all its power from USB, it may be that those ports can no longer provide enough power for the drive. The ones directly from the motherboard (like the ones on the back) are able to provide the power required by the drive. So if you have anything else connected to those front ports, disconnect it and see what happens.

So I have a 6 month old WD passport 500gb external usb 2 hd. I have it partitioned into an ntfs and fat32 partitions

I plugged the hd into an internet cafes computer and it didn't recognise. Since then no computers will recognise the hd. I have tried several recovery software including the wd own software. Also tried a different, shorter cable. The light starts up as normal and the hd doesn't make any unusual noises but after a second or 2 the light goes dim like there is no activity inside

I also tried chkdisk from command and still nothing. If I could just get the hd to show up maybe I can use these recovery programs to recover data. Even if I lost the data and just got to use my hd again I would be happy.

Any ideas from anyone would be HUGELY appreciated. I have spent hours on google trying to find a solution short of sending it away for repair ( which would cost more than its worth ). Also heard a trick of putting it in the freezer but I'm not sure about any of this!

You could try letting Vista update the device's driver from device manager. And, you could try installing any missing Vista reliability updates. Those related to USB might solve your problem.

Hello All,

I just installed a new ASROCK FM2A88M Extreme4+ motherboard in my home PC last week. I have a CM Storm Quickfire Rapid i keyboard and a SteelSeries Rival mouse attached to the top two USB ports on the back of the motherboard:

Ever since I got this motherboard I have been having frequent, random issues with my Quickfire keyboard. What happens is, after a cold boot, about 20% of the time the keyboard does not light up and is not recognized by Windows. I have to either reboot or pull the USB plug and put it back in to get it to work. I have also tried switching around the USB ports (swapping which port the mouse and keyboard uses) but that doesn't seem to work. (I didn't try the other "lower" USB ports because I assumed that, due to the position of the ones I am using, that they are meant specifically to be used for keyboards and mice.)

The Quickfire keyboard is new as well but I did have it before I got the ASROCK motherboard and i don't recall having this issue (at least not frequently enough to remember) so I am leaning towards the conclusion that it's an issue with the ASROCK motherboard.

My first question is, is there a way in Windows 8.1 (event logs, device manager, etc.) to see what exactly is causing my keyboard to not be recognized all the time?

If you were to make an educated guess would you say it's an issue with the motherboard or the keyboard? (Note that the Quickfire keyboard did not come with any drivers or software, everything is done... Read more

Okay I have a vista machine I built my self a few years ago. Recently the power supply died and I replaced it with a bigger better one. 600 watts instead of 400. Machine works great, however, now it seems that external harddrives that are not powered from an external power supply (2.5 inch western digitals I have) are not recognized at all when I plug them in. Doesn't show up in device manager, disk management or anything. Nothing happens when I plug them in. The lights blink on the drives but nobody is home. They work fine on every other machine I have. Now, I know the usb ports put out at least some power because my iphone mounts fine and charges, even my 5th gen ipod which is a hard drive, charges and mounts, all flash drives work.... Could it be the external western digitals are not getting "enough" power, do the usb ports get power from another line that i might have forgotten to plug in? I thought those ports were all powered from the main power line that plugs into the Mobo all the other functions of the computer seem to be just fine. I've tried all 6 usb ports on the back and get the same result.

Any suggestions on what to try? Am at a loss. the drives are passport western digitals, I have a 60 gig and 120 gig...

A:external hard drives not recognized/powered in vista

1.) What's the make and model of your power supply? It's possible that it's underpowered for your setup.
If the power supply is generic, how many 12V rails does it have, and how many amps are on each 12V rail?

2.) Have you tried the drives on a different computer? If that problem is solved after trying on another computer, it's definitely your PC hardware causing the issue.

I have a 1TB external storage drive that uses its own power supply and connects to my laptop via USB 2.0 cable. For months I've had absolutely no problem out of the device, until the computer randomly decided to forget the device was plugged in. Now I'm lucky to get the device to be recognized by the computer at all, and when it is recognized, if I try to move anything to/from the device, the connection is immediately severed from the computer.

I use this device for my backup as well as holding on to things I would rather not get rid of. All my drivers are up to date, I've done all the Power Management checking and unchecking that I've read from other threads found via Google search, and still it won't work correctly for me. Any advice?

A:Self-Powered External Storage not recognized/randomly disconnecting

Providing you have done all the power options to attack the problem from the OS end of things, then you must consider that the drive itself is the problem. This seems likely since the drive has worked fine in the past.

The first suspect would be the USB cable, the connector on either end, or the port on either end.

The second suspect would be the hard drives power supply. These do go bad. If it is not supplying proper power then the drive will fail to be recognized correctly.

Try the drive on another computer. If it exhibits the same behavior there then you can narrow it down to one of the two issues above.

Hello,

I have a 250GB Western Digital passport external hard drive that has suddenly stopped working. It last worked fine before a small fall from the table but I suspect the real reason for it not functioning is the presence of a virus.

Now, when I connect the hard drive, it is detected by the PC, the driver is loaded the first time if run on a new PC (I?ve tried it on many PC?s) but no new drive is shown in My Computer. Sometimes, it shows up as the letter G:\ in My Computer (previously it was F:\). It is also extremely slow. The drive does not open on double clicking/right click>>explore or via any application, the computer/application just freezes. It goes back to normal on removal of hard drive.

I would have thought this is due to the fall it suffered, but I have found the recent virus ?Autorun.inf? in my PC and another Hard Drive plus a few Trojan horses which leads me to believe that it might have to do with the non functioning of my hard drive. I have tried running various Antivirus programs like AVG, spybot, Trojan removers etc, they?ve removed a few viruses but I?m not convinced my PC is clean. I?ve also tried the procedure of removing all Autorun.inf files from the PC & drives from command prompt as suggested in discussion forums online.

Now when I try to open my WD hard drive (letter G:\) in any way, it either freezes or recommends a format of the hard drive. I am assuming that it would function fine after a format, but I have about 200G... Read more

But for some reason when i plug my device in to my computer, a small speech bubble appears and says "USB Device not recognised" and ive tried numerous troubleshootings and all sorts but nothing seems to help.

Another problem is that i no longer have the installation disc, which i can imagine to be a major problem.

If I hover my mouse over drive D, it says: 'drive is powered off, to power on the optical drive, press the eject button on the optical drive.' That also does nothing. Also, my 'battery stretch' is off, so it does not appear to be a power setting. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello all,

I didn't use my external hard drive for over a month, and today I decided that i wanted a back-up of some of the stuff on my laptop. I plugged it in and immediately a message popped up, saying that this drive was protected by something called BitLocker. It required me to enter a 48 digit recovery key. I had NEVER heard of BitLocker up until that point. I didn't know anything about a recovery key, and why didn't it ask for a regular password first, before asking for a recovery key? I didn't have a clue. I still don't have a clue. I searched my computer for BitLocker using the regular 8.1 system search. No results. I searched in PC Info. There is something about encryption there. That was, and is turned off. Not a mention of BitLocker anywhere. When i looked it up it said it comes with Windows 8.1 Pro or Enterprise edition. I am fairly certain I have regular 8.1. How in the name of all that is holy did I get saddled with this piece of shit encryption that locks me from my files, while I don't even want it? When I plugged it into my fathers laptop, also running 8.1 it gave the same message. When i plugged it into my brothers Asus tablet with keyboard combo, also running 8.1, it didn't give any problems. Does anyone here have any clue what is going on? Would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Thank you

A:BitLocker and External Hard Drive(WD My passport 2TB)

I'm having the exact same problem. I've been dealing with it for months. Both of my external hard drives had this happen to them at roughly the same time, and I have no idea how. I too had never heard of Bitlocker before this happened. I tried calling WD and they told me to call Microsoft as Bitlocker is owned by Microsoft. I called Microsoft and they told me to talk to WD. I've been led in circles for months and still cannot access my hard drives and the files on them. I do not have the recovery keys and do not know how to get them. I have been searching for answers throughout the internet without any results. I was told that I could reformat them, and that might work, but then I would lose all of my files. I don't have a backup for them because my hard drives were the backups (that's why I had two!). If you have been able to fix this problem, or have any sort of solutions or options, please, please help me out.

Hi everyone,

I've been reading the forums all day to try and find a solution to my unreadable hard drive problem, but so far haven't had much luck. This morning, before powering up my laptop, I managed to drop my girlfriend's external hard drive, after which point it has, not surprisingly, refused to be recognised in "My Computer". I would therefore very much appreciate any advice on resuscitating the thousands of photos and music files which are hopefully still on there.

This is my problem:

Although not visible in My Computer the drive can be seen using Disk Management, showing as an unknown, unreadable drive. When it's connected to my laptop the drive makes 3 different pitched beeps, and repeats this cycle 4 times. The LED is lit and the drive can be disconnected using Safely Remove Hardware. I've tried running chkdsk in CMD but the message "Cannot open volume for direct access" appears. Nor am I able to reassign the drive letter, as I can only access properties in Disk Management. I've changed USB cables and tried a "Y" cable (??) with two usb connections in case it was a power issue. I've also tried it on another laptop running Windows XP, on which the drive doesn't even appear in Disk Management.

I have already had a quote of 200 - 400 to recover the data on the drive, but have also heard that buying a bit of kit for around 20 and some software and removing the drive from its casing is also a... Read more

Hi

I have a USB 2.0 Western Digital 320 GB External Drive. The Drive is formatted with NTFS. The drive works fine on my home Vista x64 machine.

Last night I wanted to install some software on a Customer's Vista PC.

I used the Safely Remove Hardware utility then removed the drive.

Drove to Customer's house, plugged in the drive and was told Access is Denied unable to read contents of j:

The drive came up as RAW - 0 bytes.

When I went to Run > CMD and typed j: - no problem. DIR - no problem. Could even copy files using Command Shell.

Did a chkdsk j: /f /v - some problems found and resolved but same Access is Denied problem.

In the end I had to reboot in Safe Mode and type the address into Explorer Bar of My Computer to copy files at Customer's house.

What on earth is going on? Did I eject the wrong hardware? (there were 3 choices at time - generic volume, j: and WD Passport Drive - which one should I choose?)

Is it because I formatted the drive in NTFS?

Help, I have just returned from a trip where I downloaded all my Raw photo files on my hard drive and suddenly my WD passport hard drive will not work. Windows will not respond to it at all, I plug it is to my laptop and nothing comes up so I try to go into my computer ( as I have had to do to enter it many times ) and the whole window program freezes. I tried connecting my hard drive before turning on and windows will just not start. I have had problems before locating and opening my hard drive and have been told it is a Vista problem and had to some times restart my lap top with the HD connected to be able to locate it and open then it seemed to sort it self out but now I cant open it at all every thing freezes till I disconnect it form my lap top. I am worried I have lost all my photos can any one help me.

A:Problems WD passport external Hard Drive

Try another machine and another cable just to be sure that's not the issue. Another option would be to remove the drive from the enclosure and put it into a different enclosure or into another PC.

You could try a file recovery program such as Test Disk or GetDataBack but if the drive isn't being recognized at all these may not do anything.

Last night I was using my WD My Passport Ultra connected to my laptop but had performance issues accessing files so disconnected it by pulling the cable out then reconnecting, as I have done lots of times in the past. Now I am unable to view the drive at all. So it appears I have corrupted the partition of the drive by not ejecting properly before disconnecting.

The drive is full of years of videos, documents, data, pictures and memories that I just cannot afford to lose.

When I plug it in my OS recognises it with the windows bleep and it is listed in device manager as USB Mass Storage however there is no drive letter mapped through Windows explorer.

If I use a different USB cable I get the same and if I use a different Win 7 laptop I also get the same so it is definitely the HDD

If I run diskpart list I can see it listed as Disk 2 and can select it but it lists as 0 KB. If I run Diskpart volume I can only see my onboard HDD Volumes. If I select Disk 2 and run list partition it says there are no partitions to show.

I'm not aware of any diskpart commands similar to chkdsk that I can run against Disk 2.

If I check disk management it's listed as Disk 2 unknown and prompts to initialise disk but when I do this it errors Virtual Disk Manager "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

I have downloaded Easeus data recovery, Easeus partition manager and MiniTool partition manager and I can't get any of the software to recognise th... Read more

Hi grizzlylar,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

Not a good news but then I have to call a spade a spade.

The answer is simple. If no Data recovery software is able to see your drive, no DIY data recovery is possible.

Now I do not want to repeat. Just read this post and you will know the only costly solution/ proposition..

Disk 2 is unkown, not initialized

In your case you have to contact the WD Data Recovery Partners in EMEA region.

Hello everyone,
I have a WD passport 1 terrabyte external hard drive. I brought it abroad with me and transfered some files from it to my sister's computer and when I tried plugging it into my computer at home again it gives me the error: "You need to format disk drive G: before you can use it". Also whenever I plug it in it makes my computer so slow that I cannot do anything on it. So I tried downloading Partition Table Doctor and I cannot actually use it because it is so slow that it won't load my external hard drive when I plug it in. My sister's OS is WIndows 7 and I have Vista. Anyway, please help! I will gladly give more information, whatever is needed.

I'm using a W/D External drive with Ghost32 on a EliteBook 850 G3 Laptop. The BIOS doesn't recognize the drive which is using USB 3.0 but backward compatable to 2.0. It does allow me to boot from the external CDRW drive using my Ghost32 boot disk, but will not show the Passport Drive. Any thoughts?

I need your help urgently.

The drive does not open on double clicking/right click, explore or via any application. The hard drive shows up in Safely remove hardware, but does not always appear as an icon in My Computer. If it occasionally does (as G:\), then it still wont open.. just freeze. The computer/application just freezes. It goes back to normal on removal of hard drive.

It shows up similarly in Disk management. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers.

I?ve also tried the procedure of removing all Autorun.inf files ... Read more

I bought a 750GB silver WD Passport essential SE Hard drive a few weeks ago. I connected it to my computer and everything went great. I backed up all my files lightning fast. I am a photographer and wanted something to store photos on to free up my computer. I then (luckily) backed up all files to disks.. taking daaaays. I was having a few issues with my computer and a few people had suggested wiping my hard drive and starting my computer from scratch. I spent an evening doing just that.

Once I got my computer back up and did all windows updates, getting me caught up since the computer is 4 years old, I plugged my passport back in. I needed to reinstall the driver, but now when I try to do so it comes up with a message saying that windows will not allow this to continue because of my DEP settings. I went into my advance system settings to override DEP on that specific file only to get another error message saying that this file must be run with DEP enabled. I am at a complete loss. I have went to both microsoft and WD's websites and read over all the troubleshooting they have on this issue and nothing is out there to help me. How do I get around this?

Why did it work before and not now!?!?! Also, when I go into my computer and look at the drive, it is showing that the drive is empty. Which means all of those files are gone, good thing I spent time with old school CD's.

please help me out.. I don't have the money to pay WD to troubleshoot this.

Hi there,

I have just bought a WD hard drive and I am really confused. It is 160GB however, when i looked at the installation guide, it mentions something about FAT32 and NTFS can affect the maximum storage level......This is what it says exactly:

This WD drive is preformatted as a single FAT32 partition for the compatability with all Mac and windows os. The FAT32 file system has a maximum individual file size of 4 GB and cannot create partitions larger than 32 GB in Windows 2000/XP; however, windows 2000/XP users can overcome these file size limitations by reformatting the drive to NTFS using the Disk Management utility. Click to expand...

I have to admit that I am no good at computers and I did not understand what the above meant. What I am confused about is whether it is a good idea to convert the file system from FAT32 to NTFS? Will it affect the running of my computer? And if I keep the WD drive as FAT32, how much memory will it have out of the 160 GB?

Many thanks.

I bought a 1TB Seagate passport then right after buying it I had to use it to back up my girlfriend?s computer, which happens to be a mac. So everything went well for my girlfriend but now when I plug the Passport into my windows 7 computer it does not show up in my computer. Then I downloaded swiss knife and tried to format the Passport. No such luck, swiss knife always gives me a Read/Write error. When I try to use the Win 7 disk manager program all I can do is convert the Passport to a dynamic volume but I can see the Passport in both disk manger and swiss knife

When you enter into the disk management MMC console (start, control panel, administrative tools, computer management, disk management), does it show any trace of the disk?

This happens frequently with flash drives as well, drives that are formatted for mac FIRST usually have a hard time being used with Windows machines and formatted by Windows machines. My recommendation: plug it back into your GFs mac, use disk utility to format the drive to FAT32. Then move the drive back over to your PC and check your results.
