Preferred Solution: Firewall shutdown

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Everything was okay until a few days ago. Now when I shut down, I always get a pop-up message saying "VSMON caised an invalid page fault in module <unknown>. Sometines this causes the computer to lock-up and sometines I can shut it down by the CTRL-ALT-DEL method. This has something to do with my EZ Armor firewall (EZ Armor is based on Zone Alarm). I ran a virus scan on my Program and Windows folders. Nothing found. Any ideas what's causing this or a simple solutiuon? Thanks.

A:shutdown problem due to firewall

Which version of Windows are you running?

vsmon is part of Zone Alarm & EZ Armor presumably.

Did the onset of your problem begin after updating your firewall?

Hi, I've been experiencing a slow startup/shutdown on my pc and another weird thing is, when my pc is starting to load my applications (the startup applications), there's a security notification that says "Your windows firewall is turned off" then after two to three minutes, the security notification will disappear and when you check the firewall settings, it is turned ON. I've already updated my virus (eset nod32 and avast!) and scanned my pc to see if there's any virus then it says that there are no virus, I've already checked it with malwarebytes and spybot and i get the same result....the last solution that i know is to use a hijackthis and ask for help to others... here is the log of my hijackthis Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.4Scan saved at 10:32:11 PM, on 4/27/2010Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18702)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exeC:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\RTHDCPL.EXEC:\Program Files ...   Hello everyone. I have been having problems with my laptop for about the last couple of weeks or so. The major problem is that after visiting so many web pages my system begins to run slower and slower. Right before the computer stalls I will be trying to type something and it feels like it only catches a few letters here or there or I have to type something several times for it to input it, until finally a warning pops up stating that Windows Firewall has been disabled or shut off changing the whole look of the screen at the top and bottom (The browser window?) and then a message that my internet has been shut off or disconnected with the entire computer rebooting itself. I generally just force my laptop to shut off at this point and restart it. Then it works like usual for a while before the process repeats itself.

I frequently delete my browsing cookies, but that does not seem to help. I can not get Windows Defender to work either and “Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64 – based Systems” always fails when it tries to install into my computer. Others work just fine, just not that particular one. It got so bad since it would try to install every night, but fail that I simply stopped the automatic updates and just search for updates every so often. I read where you want only one problem per thread, but I figured maybe some shape or form it all comes together. Also when I am on Youtube and watching videos I can only watch about three or four... Hello and thank you for your time. My computer is not working properly. I have moderate computer knowledge in relation to the general public. I feel that my computer has a virus. It runs Windows XP Home 5.1.2600, a Dell Dimension C521. It has Charter Internet Security Suite. It has all my photos from the past 8 years on it and many important (to me) personal files. I turned on my computer one day and all my personal files were missing. I went to folder options to show hidden files, they did not appear. I downloaded and ran Unhide.exe. They did not appear. After googling generic Trojans, I searched for 7_1,0,0,3_mslagent.dll and a majority of my personal files appear....photos, music, vids, applications etc. This also goes for when I search a few other mslagent.dlls. Windows Firewall will not start: "Cannot start the security center service on local computer. Error 1899 the endpoint mapper database entry could not be created". Rundll32.exe not responding when I close the Security Center. I ended a few processes thinking they were shifty via advice from a forum, like svchost.exe being run by NETWORK SERVICE then NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM counts down and then shuts down my computer. I went into safe mode and downloaded and ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Wise Registry Cleaner. Malwarebytes says the computer is clean. I don't believe it.   I wanted to give a little update just so there is no confusion.  I chose the title so those who were helping me can spot it more easily if the same ones chooses to continue to help.  However, I no longer have the Windows Fire Wall disabling any more which is great.  However, I still have slow browsing and also black screens from time to time.  Not as bad as before, but they still show themselves.  I understand my lap top is old and it was hardly good when I first bought it five or so years ago.  But when visiting so many websites it begins to fill with junk and eventually gets very slow again.  (Best way I can describe it...) I do the whole internet options to delete my browsing history, but that does help.  Also my Avast when it is fully operational keeps telling me that-

Now the object "http" it self changes constantly, but the actual infection and process is always the same and it always tells me it blocks it, but it will pop up every five seconds until I disable that function of Avast.  Even if I use Chrome which came with Avast it still does the blocking message and the websites could be anything.

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Hi there,

Please, please help us...we've been at this virus / spyware for 3 days now...we came across your forum and saw that there was something similar being discussed and resolved. It started with Vista Antispyware then Google redirects & Security Center/Firewall shutdown. We so far ran Kaspersky TDSS killer, Malbytes Malware, McAfee Stinger on top of Norman which we always had and managed to get rid of the Vista Antispyware but we are still redirects. We also saw that the hosts file was missing so we reestablished it. We managed to turn back on the Security Center but our firewall is still down.

I've read Cookiegals' post on what to include in the new post so I'm pasting the logs by HijackThis / DDS / GMER below as instructed.

Thanks so much guys!!! I'll be waiting, fingers crossed!!!

We have a Lenovo T440s laptop that had a failing drive. We manage to clone the systems partition and manage to repair a where after the clone, the MBR was corrupted and needed to be repaired using the Windows 7 DVD.

Everything else seems fine and we ran chkdsk to make sure their no errors (it repaired a few using the DVD in order to get it to boot and then ran fixmbr to repair the boot records).

However the only issue we are facing is everytime we do a proper shutdown or reboot, the machine will boot up saying that windows has not properly shutdown and to select "start windows normally". Any ideas what can cause this issue and what can we
do to fix it.

I am unsure if maybe the corruption caused this (as the recovery partition and the MBR partition were both lost). I reformatted the recoveyr partition into a NTFS drive since I couldn't recovery that partition by itself.

I dont have access to that laptop at the moment as the user took it on vacation till next week but was looking into inputs as to what I can do to resolve this.

I also checked the system logs and it shows "windows was shutdown uncleanly" and such but we did shut it down using the normal windows shutdown button and restart button, both of which cause this error.

We're currently running into an issue with an older Yoga ThinkPad model 20C0. Specifically when these devices were upgraded to Windows 10, they've encountered issues sporatically when users would shutdown or sleep the device. The system's screen will go black, but the LED power indicator on the palm rest "ThinkPad" sticker and atop the laptop itself. This behavior continues until the battery is fully drained. Here is what I've gathered so far. Early false positives led us to believe the Intel Management software was at issue, but a colleague eventually found that if Chrome and/or Firefox were running at the time sleep was initiated, the problem would be triggered. The behavior is inconsistent regardless of which driver is installed for Intel MEI or Intel HD Graphics. Currently using the following driver versions: Intel MEI: 11.0.0.1157(Lenovo's latest version is 9.5.15.1730) and Intel HD Graphics is Lenovo's current version 20.19.15.4416. Windows 10 1703 Enterprise OS Build # 15063.540. Anyone else encounter this issue? I know it is something plaguing Windows 10 users accross multiple hardware vendors and the only things that seem consistent is Windows 10 and Intel Gfx thus far. Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated! JH

Hi, My apologies for asking something which has been asked and answered in many variations, but none of which has helped much.

I have three Win7 Home Premium x64 PCs called BoyToy (my main PC), Salsa, and Polka, all of which are wired to a D-Link DIR-655 router. I want to wake and shutdown Salsa and Polka from BoyToy using Aquila?s WakeOnLan utility (which can also control non-Windows PCs) or something similar.

After enabling the BIOS and Win7 settings, I?m able to ?Wake On LAN? both computers from BoyToy (yeah!) but I?m stuck on the Shutdown side?and I?ve tried many different combinations of utilities and settings.

Most recently, I?ve run Aquila?s Listener (part of their WOL utility) on Salsa with its Win7 firewall turned off and no AV running. Listener detects WOL messages sent from BoyToy (not surprising since WOL works) but it doesn?t detect Shutdown messages. From BoyToy, I?ve sent the shutdown message to different router addresses (255.255.255.255, 0.0.0.0, 192.168.1.255, and Salsa?s address) and the results are always the same: WOL detected; shutdown not.

I?m stuck because I don?t even understand how Shutdown is supposed to work in Win7. I?ve found lots of WOL documentation but not for Shutdown. I assume it?s totally different than WOL since the computer to be shutdown is awake so it has an IP address, the Shutdown message contains timer info, warning text, etc.

I?d really appreciate it if someone could explain to me how Shutdown is sup... Read more

Hi -

Most of the 11 BSODs list NVIDIA video as the probable cause.

1. Update your NVIDIA video drivers -

Code:

nvlddmkm.sys Tue Mar 16 22:00:40 2010 (4BA037C8)
nvBridge.kmd Tue Mar 16 21:31:37 2010 (4BA030F9)

NVIDIA --> http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

One of the BSODs had a bugcheck = 0x124 = WHEA = Windows Hardware Error Architecture - potential hardware failure

Info on 0x124 --> http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-loc...-what-try.html

2. Remove Daemon Tools/ Alcohol 120. A driver common to both sptd.sys is known to cause BSODs.

3. Update your ESET installation to v4.2.64.12 --> http://www.eset.com/download

You need device driver updates. Alienware Support sends me to Dell Support -

http://support.dell.com/support/down...nConsent=False

4. Update all device drivers - chipset (NVIDIA & Ricoh), audio, network. DO NOT download the NVIDIA Video driver from Dell - go to NVIDIA Support per step #1 above.

When I shutdown my computer (through start -> shutdown....as I always have), it shows the vista shutdown screen then the computer powers off, like it always has.
But, when I power back up and log in, I get an alert stating the following:

Four updates were listed important (two recommended were for my Windows Mail software and a general update to resolve application compatibility issues - KB954366) and are logged as being successfully installed in my update log.

I don't really want to have to uninstall windows updates, unless absolutely necessary.

Is there any other likely reason for this notification to pop up on startup after a completely normal shutdown?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello All,

I have a ASUS Laptop with Intel I3 processer and Windows 7 Home Premium. I recently had a forced shutdown during a Windows upgrade session. Ever since then the Boot and Shutdown times have increased to over 15 minutes. I have run the msconfig unticking all but the antivirus (Kaspersky) and it still takes >15 min to boot and Shutdown. Is there something I can do before I decide to reinstall Windows &. (I dont have a install disk.) The software came with the Computer and I have the OEM code (Bought at Best Buy)

Thanks in advance.

A:SLOW Boot and Shutdown after forced Shutdown during Windows 7 Upgrade

Yeah. I have been using the Software performance toolkit from windows. Basicly if you know about windows xp, xp had a program called bootvis that rearranged the bootfiles and such for faster boot times, and bootvis is in windows 7, but you need another program to try to use it (i believe).

a. Hard drive diagnostic, long test.

b. Followed by chkdsk /r if no issues during diagnostic.

c. Followed by defrag if no issues with first two steps.

Hey folks. I would appreciate if you could lend a hand with this issue, as I haven't had any luck so far.

My PC has been restarting instead of shutting down when I initiate a shutdown. I did a clean boot and tried it, as well safe mode, and it still replicates the problem. The BSOD I occasionally get before the restart is KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE

Even though the BSOD doesn't show up every time, I am getting a minidump each time it restarts with the KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE error. I've included the two most recent minidumps for analysis if it helps solve the problem.

Minidump 1: http://speedy.sh/WM23P/092014-21796-01.dmp

Where do I go from here?

Last night while I was at work, my weekly antivirus scan (Comodo Internet Security 3.13.125662.579) popped up an error that read "Update failed. Error code 0x80004002. No such interface supported" I clicked OK and then attempted to close the scan that had hung. It popped up a new error of "Update failed Error Code 0x800705aa Insufficient system resources" I rebooted and ran the scan a second time with the same results, but the scan hung up on a different file. A third attempt hung on yet another file at random times in the scan process.

Reading the support forums for solutions suggested reinstall of the software. So I uninstalled and attempted to reinstall.

The installation went on, then ended with an unspecified error that ended in a rollback of the installation.

Checking my event logs has me concerned because I notice activation of many .net framework errors, and bootstart/application start failures to load. Most of which were files related to my firewall/AV followed by Terminal Services, Fast user switching, IP Traffic filter driver, Telephony, and remote access connection manager services.

I am concerned that I have been hacked/wormed or virused. Mostly because under "Documents and Settings there is a new "Administrator" folder which did not exist before where only "All users, Default user, and Kumu Honua" were in the past.

Hi guys,

Could anyone explain to me why Windows Firewall starts when I have Comodo Firewall installed and running?

It makes me nervous!

I have a fresh installation of Comodo Internet Security.

The only reason I knew it was running was because I got the message after a reboot, screenshot 1. When I went into control panel it confirmed I had two firewalls running, screenshot 2. So I have no idea why WF started or how long it had been running.

I seem to remember when I had BitDefender IS2013 it did the same thing, is it to do with my system maybe?

Why does it do that? Is there any way I can ensure Windows Firewall stays off?

BTW, in screenshot 2 you can see I have multiple antivirus programs. well they are Comodo and Emsisoft AM, as well as a rather annoying addition in Advanced System Care Ultimate. Am I right in thinking Emsi is more malware than virus oriented, and compatible with an AV. Also when I installed Advanced System Care Ultimate, they state that their AV is designed to work alongside the main AV. I have it turned off although it still shows up here.

Thanks for any ideas and support, Chig

A:Windows Firewall starts with 3rd party firewall installed and active

Personally I would scrap the lot and install Microsoft Security Essentials. You certainly do not need any third party "Advanced System Care" software with Windows 7. I think you are heading for all sorts of conflicts with what you have installed at the moment. You will find your system speeds up when you get rid of all that bloat. I bet if you check Start up they are all there jockeying for position and slowing your system down. Ughhhh!

I'm confused !!!!

A couple of hours ago I got a free license of Defensewall Personal Firewall. I've never tried this firewall, so I've got no idea about it.

I'm a ESET Smart Security 7 user. And ESS has a firewall.

Now my question is.....
Should I disable ESS firewall and go with Defensewall Personal Firewall ??? or should I just stick to ESS Firewall !!!

Note-

I know about Comodo Firewall, Private Firewall and Online Armor
I just want to know about this- DefenseWall Private Firewall
Yes, my system is 32bit. And I've no plan of upgrading it to 64bit as I'm thinking of buying a new laptop. So please, no advice on system upgrade, as long as you're not ready to pay for the Windows7x64 bit license And no Windows8.1 license please. This laptop doesn't have the drivers for win8.1

On a serious note.... Give me some advice.... DefenseWall Personal Firewall or ESET Smart Security Firewall or both

A:DefenseWall Personal Firewall vs ESET Smart Security Firewall

For starters, did you read what they say about their product.
http://www.softsphere.com/programs/

DefenseWall Personal Firewall - the world's first sandboxing-style personal firewall solution

No learning modes (as seen with firewall and HIPS programs).
Mininimal popups.
Compatible with third-party security software and programs.
No need to configure ports and sockets.
No application checksum re-calculations.
Average users find it difficult to setup and use your typical firewall and security program. For most average users, program popups and questions are confusing. There is always the chance a user will make the wrong choice and allow malware to cause damage to their system.

DefenseWall Personal Firewall is a different kind of security program. You won't even notice it's installed and providing the highest firewall and system protection.
Again, planning to use software without knowing what they do, is as bad as executing malware.

First mate, you'll want to scan the computer with an antivirus program. There are numerous free ones if you do not own one yet, such as AVG free, Avast free, or MS Security Essentials. Only use one, otherwise they will conflict with eachother. Use the full scan option if available.

A good program to use in addition to an antivirus program is malwarebytes free, but up to you if you want to install it or not, and run the additional full scan.

Next, run this: Diagnose and fix Windows Firewall service problems automatically

I recently installed the freeware firewall of Comodo in my Win7 PC. However I am not too happy because of some problems and would like to remove Comodo and simply use the firewall that came with Win7 (I am using the Home Edition of Win7).

I had a hitch that probably both firewalls are somehow enabled on my Win7 PC. I went into Control Panel and turned off the bult-in Firewall of Win7 but it now show the message (or maybe the icon) that firewall is not present (EVEN though I already have COMODO installed). SO that's the first question/confusion I am facing.

The 2nd question is that how do I uninstall COMODO in a very clean manner. I remember froma long time back when I tried to remove Norton Anti-Virus and it simply refused to un-install. Will I face a similar problem when trying to remove Comodo.

Last but not least, will be very thankful if you can share tips regarding what settings I need to put in place for the Windows Firewall to work effectively. Based on what I have read, the default configuration of Win7's firewall has a lot of room for improvement and I would like it to be as secure as my favourite firewall (which I use on XP) i.e. Sygate.

Thanks in advance for your kind help.

Hello Johny, for a Stop 0xD1, we need to see the crash dumps to have the closest look. The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. If anything is there, upload it. If not, wait for the next system crash. Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

After PC is left unattended more than an hour or so it gets a black screen with no error messages, but the CPU and fans are powered up. I must power off and cold start. Usually it takes 3 or 4 tries to get a successful boot, and when I do I get a message that says windows did not shutdown successfully.

The windows error log says the problem is shut down unexpectedly, event name bluescreen, OS version 6.1.7601.2.1.768.3 Locale ID 1033. (Windows Home Premium)

I have all power, sleep, and hibernate options set to never. I have run the memory test and it is OK. I have also run a windows integrity scan which said no corruptions in windows integrity.

I'd really appreciate a hand with this issue. Thanks.

I've browsed through a few threads on here, and because of that, I was able to figure out how to disable fast startup (which allows me to listen to the startup sound), but also replace it as well since I believe by default, there is no startup sound in Windows 10.

However, this isn't the same with the shutdown as every time I turn off my PC or restart my PC, there is no sound that plays.

I've customized both the startup (which works) and shutdown (which does not work) as well and enabled the Logon and Logoff sounds in the Sounds menu as well. I used the same sound for Logoff and Logon as well. For Exit Windows as well, I used the shutdown sound and I also checked Play Windows Startup sound too.

Anyone know how I can change this so I CAN hear it when I restart or turn off my PC? Minor customization options like this is what made Windows 7 and below so great, and to see this absent or hidden from Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 is rather disappointing as I feel that I am not able to customize my own computer, possibly at least without some form of a workaround.

Thank you.

Hi all,

I've downloaded the Windows SDK to create an trace file to pinpoint what is holding up my laptop shutdown.

Unfortunately I'm having trouble reading the results so would appreciate anyone whom has experience with the software help me identify what is holding up shutdown.

Shutdown now takes 30secs on an i7 sony laptop ssd 8gb ram, it use to take only around 5 seconds.
It would seem there is only activity at the start and end of the shutdown process and a dead spot with little cpu activity for about 20 seconds.

Only thing I can see is the process lifetime seems to be extended for a handful of processes.

The file is HUGE so i'll just upload some screenshots of the results.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

A friend gave me his laptop PC to remove some virus' and any Malware.  Well I think I have all the bad stuff off but I noticed that the firewall wasn't running.  I looked in services to start it but it's not there.  I down loaded Microsoft security essentials but that didn't help.  Have you any ideas?  Is there something I can run to find it? Thanks, klclarkEdit: Moved topic from Firewall Software and Hardware to the more appropriate forum, at the suggestion of staff. ~ Animal

* Save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.Note: If a security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Firewall Issue(s) - Windows XP Professional & Comodo Firewall Pro

Friday/December 3rd 2007: This morning I was looking at the features and settings of Comodo Firewall Pro Version 2.4.19.185. Accidentally I clicked ‘no’ when a learned prompt came up asking if I wanted to allow Avast Free Edition to connect to the net. I believe it was Avast. Anyway I figured I would uninstall and reinstall to correct the settings, no big deal, or so I thought.

When windows started back up and gave me the security alert prompt (Control Panel > Windows Security Center) and I figured no big deal. However it was saying “Comodo is not installed bla bla bla.” When I enabled XP Professional’s firewall, window’s message said, “Comodo was working, etc.”

Windows Firewall worked within normal parameters as far as I could tell otherwise. I will try to recreate issue buy uninstalling and will post detailed results later with screen shots.

Sunday/December 9th 2007: I tried recreating the incident and my results confuse me. Windows XP Professional Security Center Says “Comodo Firewall not on bla, bla, bla.” However, when I turn on XP’s firewall it says “Windows Firewall is on bla, bla, bla. So why when I turn off windows firewall does it say that “Comodo” not windows firewall is disabled?

How would I correct this?

Thank you.

Just like many online virus scanners are designed to promote particular anti-virus products, so are many online firewall tests and port scanners designed to promote particular firewall software.

Steve Gibson's Shields UP! promotes ZoneAlarm (see https://www.grc.com/zonealarm.htm) which seems to be pure spyware (see http://chateaumezcal.com/caveat/zap0719.htm). ShieldsUP! also seems inconsistent and unreliable (see http://words.jml.is/4444/shieldsup-analyzed. PC Flank promotes Outpost Pro Firewall (see http://www.pcflank.com/pcflankleaktest.htm) and so on.

Do you know of a reliable and objective firewall test that does not promote any product?

Thank you very much.

hi there,

I have both Eset Smart Security Personal Firewall and Windows Firewall running... which should i disable to avoid conflicts?

thanks.

Sincerely,

Mon

A:Eset Smart Security Firewall or Windows Firewall?

I believe that the Eset firewall has outbound protection and if that is the case, I would disable the Windows one as it does not have outbound protection.
