Simpletech 500 gb external hhd fell

Q: Simpletech 500 gb external hhd fell

I dropped my drive and when i tried plugging it it was not recognized at all (computer, disk mgnt etc). It powers on, however it makes a slight noise not clicking, more like buzzing or attempting to read, blue lights even turn on (pininfarina model). So after some advice i took it off the enclosure since one of the sides popped of slightly. Plugged it on same result nothing, same noise. I noticed if i unplugged the sata cable with the red, yellow, black cables it stopped making the noise. The other sata cable (red) seemed a little bent. So i plugged it on againg with that sata cable unplugged just with usb and i got " initio combo class.." My laptop is running windows xp and is the same one i installed the drive when i bought it. I also plugged it on another running vista and got a msg with "locate and install software for unknown device", it pops up on device manager with a yellow ? And as unknown device. Is my data lost? Can i recover it? Any help is much appreciated!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

OK. Both my 60 GB and 250 GB Simpletech external HD's were working yesterday. Now, I have a new Toshiba laptop (Win7 64 bit) and a new OS (10.5) on my Macmini. Neither computer shows them now! What is going on? I went to the website and saw a method for adding more power to the little one by using a mini USB to 2 regular sized USB adapter (I guess you would call it a USB Y adapter) that I recalled I had used (when I still had it) to make it (the 60GB one) work years ago. But, still the 250 GB should show because it has its own power source and an onoff button. I saw a lot of chatter online about this but still cant find the solution. My laptop says I have an IDE to bridge device and even makes me click on the icon to remove storage device. But the device is not in my directory tree! Why would my computer lie to me? I know computer's don't lie but in this case I think it is! LOL

If any body knows the quick fix on this I would be highly appreciated! I've already accidentally erased my applications folder because I had to use my little 2 GB jumpdrive that does work to move files. I ended up putting all my files on it 2 or 10 times to make what would have been one move with the SimpleTechs. Then I upgraded my MacOS and forgot I moved my app folder to the desktop. Then, when I selected erase and install it got rid of the applications!

Thank you very much! JasoRuni

We just purchased a new Dell PC for the office, to replace an older Dell XP machine. Not sure if it was the discontinuation of support for XP, but we started experiencing some big problems with the older computer very soon following.

Anyway, I am trying to transfer documents via a Simpletech 250GB external hdd from the older PC running XP, to this new PC running 7 Pro, and am experiencing some issues:

*(External HDD works perfectly fine on the old Dell XP PC.)*

-When I plug in the external HDD to the new PC, I get a message saying "USB device is not recognized". Followed by "Device Driver successfully installed" message.

-HDD Does not show up in My Computer

-In Device Manager, it does not show up under Disk Drives, but an Unknown Device shows up under USB Controllers.

-In Disk Management, it does not show up at all, and there are no un-designated disks.

I have tried using different USB ports, no change. I have tried uninstalling the Unknown Device from Device Management, no change. I have also tried to find a driver on the hitachi website, but can't find the right one for this older drive. The drive is supposed to be plug-n-play.

There have been many similar questions on various forums regarding this particular drive, and all my research has yet to yield any solution to this problem. It seems that there might not be a working driver for this drive for Win 7, even though its supposed to be a simple USB plug-n-play drive. Before I giv... Read more

Well; it is possible depending on how old the external drive is; that windows 7 may not support if it thew new pc is running 7. That may be why you cant get it to work.

Hello, im about to buy a Simpletech 160GB external hard drive, but i need to know two things, and excuse me for use this space, but im from a country were the stores may not necesarily try every product they sell, and the sellers are allowed to answer "It should..." instead of a yes/no or more detailed answer. So here it goes.

I wanted to know if this hard drive have any problem with XP, ive read that theres some problems with Dell desktops, and some XP HOME editions. So i dont really know if its just a configuration problem or something bigger.

And does it works like a USB memory? I mean, can I open my explorer and see all my files in the HardDrive and even manipulate them? Like from Folder A to Folder B for example, if both folders are in the same Hard Drive

Thanks for your help!!!

A:If you have a Simpletech external hard drive I need your help!!!

This is just a generic USB connected hard disk. It should work without any drivers for ME/2K/XP. Yes, it appears just like any other disk in My Computer, and you can manipulate files/folders just like any other hard disk. I can't imagine why XP-Home would have any issues with the drive. USB support is identical in XP-Pro and XP-Home, it uses the same software modules.

I have a 1TB SimpleTech external hard drive, which I have had for a few months, without any major problems. Just last night, my laptop (an Alienware with an XP OS) blue screened. The laptop came back up just fine, no problems. However, the hard drive which was attached at the time (though not in use at that very moment) has not.
My laptop recognizes that it is plugged in, claims it is working just fine. It says the same amount of space is being used as it was prior to this incident. However, going into the hard drive, all I see are a shadowed System Volume Information folder and a Recycler folder. The first inaccessible and the other empty. I can save anything new to the hard drive, however, the 652G of information is nowhere to be seen. None of my files can be found. Even taking the hard drive elsewhere does the same. Not changing the drive it's attached to. Not uninstalling and reinstalling software and doing everything except reformatting (which I am doing everything possible to not have to do as I don't want to lose the information). I have run scans on it and everything is clean. Even my computer which is a vile thing that is desperately trying to tempt me into hacking it up with a knife for lack of a gun to shoot it with.
If anyone. Anyone at all, has a suggestion as to what I can do to fix this poor thing, it would be greatly appreciated. As that is a terribly large amount of information to have to lose......
And hopefully I placed this in the right area. If ... Read more

A:SimpleTech External Hard Drive Mystery

I had a similar problem with the same drive except that in my case it suddenly just refused to be recognized on any computer; it would power up and then nothing.

I deleted all the usb devices from device manager and let them reinstall, then after various rebootings etc. it suddenly sprang back into life; not quite sure what fixed it in the end. Maybe it was the laying on of hands

In your situation I would strongly advise you not to write any (more) files to your drive; if any of your data is still intact you will probably be destroying it!

You should run some data recovery software on the drive; not sure what to recommend, try google.

A:Simpletech 1TB not working

It may simply be Windows failing to assign a drive letter to it, without which it cannot be displayed in Windows Explorer.
This can be remedied by assigning the drive letter manually:

Control Panal > Admin Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

At bottom right of disk management console you'll see a series of horizontal ribbons (one for each drive).
Locate the ribbon that relates to your 1TB external drive, right-click it & choose "Change Drive Letter & Paths"
Click "Add"
Choose a drive-letter from the drop-down menu.
Click OK.

I upgraded with a new Dell PC Desktop to windows 10 from Vista. I put a lot of my files on a SimpleTech Simpledrive Model 96300-47001-001 USB drive hoping that I could attach it to my new PC and transfer the files that way. Do any drivers for this hardware exist for windows 10? The old PC was having boot problems so I am hoping the drivers for 10 exist. If not I will have to boot the old PC one more time and copy off what I need. Any suggestions of finding a Windows 10 driver for this 400 GB external hard drive? I did the Google thing and of course came up with many people who want me to download their "manager". Not really fond of that.

A:Old SimpleTech Simpledrive Driver

For windows versions prior to Windows 10, Simpletech SimpleDrive is a "plug and play" device - you just plug it in and it just plays. A few years ago I bought two on different occasions, none came with a device driver disk - it doesn't need it, none existed anyhow.

When Windows 10 came along - you plug it in, it just doesn't play. You try different USB ports and different cables and different Windows 10 computers, it just doesn't play (doesn't work.) That's my experience. Don't know if Microsoft will fix this problem.

A "Plug and Play" device becomes a "Plug and Doesn't Play" device.

I should've backed up the files somewhere else but I didn't,.. and so many of my files were only located on this external hard drive.

A few days ago, I disconnected the drive from the laptop and when reconnected it again the drive start to spin and you can hear a click noise that stops after a few min, but the drive does not show up neither in disk management or in explorer in xp. After running the windows xp error check utility gave me only bad sectors, but no chance to see the files, even more a message came up that "the drive is not formatted, do u want to format now?"

After a few restart it isn't clicking or anything and is just making the regular sounds, the drive is spinning but is still not being recognized up at all ..

Is there anything what I can do or all my data gone?? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Remove the drive from the enclosure. Set the drive as master. unplug any optical drives you have and run it as a single drive on that IDE channel and see if you can access the data.

You could also set it as a slave and run it with the installed hard drive on the primary IDE channel but by running it as a single drive on the secondary IDE channel you avoid any potential conflicts.

Does anyone know where I can locate a driver for the SimpleTech hard drive called "SimpleDrive External"? It worked great on XP, but when I transferred to my new VISTA compunter, VISTA does not recognize the device when plugged into the USB 2.0. VISTA attempts to check the driver and says the correct driver is installed, but it still does not recognize the device as a hard drive when plugged in. Any tricks to make VISTA recognize it if the driver is not the problem? One person said the hard drive must be reformatted to "NTFP" but this would erase all the data on the hard drive. SimpleTech? Obviously, the company name does not reflect the product. Truthfully, I never even heard of these people.

To backup data files like photos, ZIP's, etc., all you need is a copy program, try Windows Explorer. I presume that the drive appears in My Computer when you connect it, treat it just like any other disk.

I have a 4 GB simpeltech USB disk drive. When I connect it to a usb port it is recognized and works fine. When I disconnect it my PC always shuts down. Is there any way to avoid the shutdown?

A:unpluging simpletech 4GB USB drive causes shutdown

Give this a try, sometimes corrupted parameters in the registry will cause that. This will remove everything and allow Windows to rediscover the hardware when it reboots.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- cut after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
-------------------------- cut before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

A USB cable has two ends. The end that plugs into the Drive is rectangle. The other end should be wider and flat (see attached) and plug into the computer.
Unless your External drive uses a Mini USB cable plugged into the drive. The other end should be standard USB (see attached 2nd photo)

Hi there

So I have a 250gb SimpleDrive external hard drive, bought around April 2008. I have a pretty old XP computer that was rapidly running out of space, so the hard drive was bought to move our photos, music, etc over. We moved them over, and then deleted them from our computer... We should've backed up the files somewhere else more regularly, but we didn't, and so many of our files were only located on this external hard drive.

A few days ago, I disconnected the drive from the computer and connected it to my new laptop in order to move some photos over to it. I then unplugged it and reconnected it to the desktop. I should've checked to make sure the files were all still intact on the drive but didn't. Today I used the internet for a bit and then left the computer on. My sister tried to access the drive, and all of the folders were there but none of the files were in them. An error message bubble in the corner then came up saying...

"Windows- Delayed Write Failure : Windows was unable to save all the data for the file F:\ $Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection . Please try to save this data elsewhere."

I then restarted the computer, and the harddrive is not showing up at all in My Computer, both on my laptop and desktop... A few times it has shown up in the device manager, but I cant access it... It was also making a clicking sound... which I know is a bad sign. ... Read more

After some research on the internet and closer inspection i saw that the metal hooks for the plastic retainer seem twisted and therefore i was unable to reattach the key pad.
Any advice how to fix the problem? My fear is that i would have to exchange the whole keyboard?

Greetings,

Michael.

Unfortunately, my elderly parents fell for a scam today.

Evidently mom was reading some news story online and they got some pop up saying they had a lot of infections and the hard drive was going to be destroyed shortly and to call this specific 800 number.

So what do they do? They call the number. And then they type in some stuff per their instructions which gave these people access to their machine. My mother then had the idea to call me and ask me if this number was legitimate or not.

I told them to hang up the phone with these people and to pull the plug on the computer immediately. It took some convincing but they did it.

I?m totally not sure what to do now. These people never asked for any money, but they had full access to their machine. My mother couldn't tell me what they had her type in to give them access but she did say something about the rundll32.exe. That's the most information I could get out of either of them.

I think I have to assume the worst in that the bad guys have access to anything and everything that was on the computer, passwords, etc. Luckily they don?t do any online banking or anything of that sort. But isn't the entire machine now a security risk?

I think I also have to assume that they installed some sort of backdoor to re-give them access to the machine once they turn it back on again. I've told them not to turn on the machine for now.

I also wonder if the bad guys could somehow get access to their internet gatewa... Read more

So just like 15 minutes ago, my PC fell down. When I say fell, I mean the system unit struck the floor at a height of like meter (guesstimating the height of the table). It fell down because I was relocating my desk, the system unit is placed on another table (If you're asking why, I'm on a flood prone area so I can't place my unit on the floor; the table was the only thing to put it on to.) while the other things are on the desk. So I moved the desk closer to the unit then rotated it at 90? clockwise and pulled the desk to the right. I was struggling to pull the desk because one of the wheels is jammed. So I was looking at that jammed wheel when I was pulling it and then I heard like a bang. Checking the other side, I saw the unit is on the floor. I knew that my PC was fine because I was playing a song and it was still playing after it fell. The first thing that came in my mind is "Is the HDD fine?" and my answer is yes; and according to the spec sheets, my drive can survive a 30G~65G fall when it's working and I checked it with HD Tune with no problems. Plus the position of the HDD is upright so it's parallel to the direction of the fall (Does this help? Just for future reference).

Now the question is there any part that may be damaged? For now, all is fine.

When my PC fell down, I was actually surprised that everything survived considering that most of the parts are like 3.5 years old (GPU is almost 2 while HDD is 10 months). It gave me a mini-heart attack whe... Read more

Personally I'd recommend opening the unit up and check that everything looks fine (no visible damage), all connections are properly seated and all cables and connections are firmly made.

Hi  My laptop fell and needs attention. It is still under warranty so what can I do Thank you

Usually the warranty will not cover accidental damage. You do not give us the model number or anything to work with here. What happened and what is damaged?

Hello, Tonight the L key from my Ideapad Z580 fell off. I have tried to fix it but noticed one of the parts is broken so when on it half hangs off. It is incredibly annoying as I am a student and needing a fully functioning keyboard for upcoming work.  What am I supposed to do about this? Or where am I supposed to get a replacement? This is not the first time I've had this problem with this laptop after having it for jsut over a year.  Thanks.

Hi there, thank you for taking the time to look at this! I'd appreciate any kind of help someone can give me.

My operating system: Windows 7 (64-bit)

Yesterday I fell for the SteamGuard.exe program which I downloaded from a Phishing site. I usually never fall for these things but I wasn't really thinking and stupidly went along with it and ran the program. There isn't all that much info that I could find about it online besides lots of other people asking for help too. I don't know exactly what it's put on my computer, or where. And I don't know how to go about finding and removing it.
I fear a keylogger may be part of it so I changed the majority of my passwords via mobile instantly. Steam, stupidly, requires you to use the desktop program to change passwords which would be pointless should there indeed be a keylogger on my system so I did the next best thing I could think of and deauthorised all other devices as well as locking my account out from transactions.
I have the majority of things I care about already backed up on an external HDD and I have good internet to re-download stuff so I can do a complete wipe as a last resort, but I'd rather try my options first.
Thanks again for your time

Now that you have properly posted a malware log topic, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a MRT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.
From this point on, the MRT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the MRT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the MRT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another MRT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

Hello, I have lenovo y50-70 model (20378) and my left 'Ctrl' button has fallen off and I am looking to fix the situation. I have found a replacement part at http://www.replacementlaptopkeys.com/lenovo-y50-70-laptop-keyboard-keys-replacement/ and I am wondering if this is the correct part to fix the problem and which type of keyboard I have. Keyboard type is either 'IC51' or 'IC06' and I am not completely sure which part to get. Am I approaching the solution correctly? PIC of affected area included. Thank you.

So I got the ICE virus holding my PC hostage. I went to the BleepingComputer ICE removal guide and follow up on all the instructions but everytime I finished step 9. After pressing "1", instead of the PC starting up normally, all it did was opened up the "Startup Repair" screen. I went on and back tracked and redid it all over again but it still happened. Is this just simply a human error caused by me or is it something else in the process? Any help is much appreciated.

A:I fell victim to ICE

Please follow the instructions in This Prep Guide starting at Step 6.
Once the requested logs are created, then make a New Topic and post it to the =>> Malware Removal Experts Area <== Not back here.Copy and Paste any logs created, (do not attach them unless requested) and include a brief description of your problem and what you have done to try to resolve them.

Please note that the area can get a bit busy, so you may need to wait a day or more for a reply.NOTE - If you cannot produce any of the logs, then please create the new topic anyway. Do not run more tools unless the experts request them.

Hi     Has anyone else had CDs falling into their computer when uploading music or other things. This happened to me last month HP took the computer any took out the two CDs and sent it and the CDs back but it has happened yet again. I have spent hours trying to get on the chat line then a long time chatting with them previously but they dont seem to undersatand simple things like the CD is still inside the computer. It this a design fault?

A:Re: CD fell into computer

@Graeme64,It is not a design flaw.  The media is supposed to be "clicked/snapped" into the holding tabs, because of the vertical design. Now, it becomes operator intense. How else would a vertical disk stay in-place. You could try to shake it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFEFhFY3tLs

About 30 minutes ago, my computer had a pretty hard fall off a 3-4 foot drop, it was a pretty loud crash. Immediately I tried to turn it on again, and it did a "disk check". After that it just sort of got frozen. So i turned it off, turned it back on, and everything seemed to be running normal, for about 10 minutes. Then it just turned off. I turned it back on, and i had even less time that time around, as eventually it turned off again. And it was making some sort of Clicking sound while it was on...

I have a panel on the bottom of the back of my computer, and im 95% sure there is a unplugged cord there that wasn't there before, I am thinking something got displaced or fell off in the crash, but i am not sure.

I unplugged it, and opened up the panel, but i know nothing about computers...I am waiting for my brother to get home to take a look at it. But for now. Does anyone know anything i can do or any help they can offer on what is going on?

The computer turns on, then will just turn off a few minutes later, without any warning.

And it doesn't turn off until a little after that.

IF it is my Cooling system, which might be the case, how can i confirm this?

HeLP PLEASE!

EDIT: Nothing seems to be broken inside the Computer, but there are a few uplugged cords...
i turned it on with the panel open, and both fans seem to be working..

A:My computer fell, need help

If you know what the CPU heatsink and fan look like and where they are located, I would check to see if they didn't get knocked loose. The fan electrical connector could still be connected and the running fan might be hitting something. The unplugged cords could be just unused power supply connectors.

If you aren't very familiar with the insides of the PC, I don't know if it would be a good idea to muck around inside since you could do more harm than good. An accurate diagnosis of what is wrong with the PC is very difficult to give from this side of the internet without seeing the insides ourselves.
