Solved: CD -Rom player sounds crappy/ CD/RW sounds great

Q: Solved: CD -Rom player sounds crappy/ CD/RW sounds great

Hi all; I have a weird problem. My Dell Dimension 3000 Running XP bla-bla....had no drivers installed when I got it back. Had to download Ethernet driver on another computer to a flash drive. And get it up and running. The writable CD-Rom sounds fine {it has a different driver than the player only] I double checked the driver twice and it is the exact one. I even tried a different cd-rom device and it had the audio quality problem. It just sort of sounds like it's clipping.I don't know where to go next........HELP!

It sounds like the hard drive was formatted and a fresh install of Windows XP was done. If that's the case, it's normal for one or more device drivers not to get installed. That's why you want to identify the devices and have the drivers available for them before you start.

Optical drives are plug-and-play and have the drivers installed by the operating system.

I've never heard of XP bla-bla and am wondering what Windows version it is.

What's the 7-character service tag number of that Dell Dimension 3000?

Hey; Thanks for your help. It's an XP Home Ed. w/2.79 GHZ Proc.--512 RAM /SP3 [installed last nite]. As I said... someone else did this. I assumed he would do what you said but I didn't have a copy of XP to be had. What the hell else could cause this?? Hardware device is a "Lite on LTN486s 48x Max". The dell driver site had the same driver but it was listed as "opptional"..........Tag # is B41R761............Hope you can help....ty

I forgot to mention......I never did a chipset. I installed the grahics driver and everything looked normal. Also....After not being able to play the "top cd drive" I got so frustrated I took the cover off. The jack-*** had not plugged in the "top" CD-Rom. After I connected it "new hardware found" popped-up and it worked...only to sound crappy. Does that help to sink me?

According to that service tag number, http://support.dell.com/support/DPP/Index.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=B41R761"" target="_blank" class="wLink">http://support.dell.com/support/DPP/Index.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=B41R761" target="_blank" class="externalLink" rel="nofollow">here is the Dell support and software site that's specific only to your Dell Dimension 3000 desktop.

I highly suggest that you add and save this site to your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can refer to it when needed.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=B41R761&SystemID=DIM_CEL_3000&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=" target="_blank" class="externalLink" rel="nofollow">Here is the site that contains the Windows XP device drivers for that desktop.

The audio, chipset, network, and video drivers are the primary ones that you need whenever you do a hard drive format and fresh install of Windows XP.

The chipset driver should be installed first and then the computer restarted before installing any of the others.

Does the Device Manager show all devices and show them working properly?

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

According to the sytem configuration site, that desktop came with 2 - 256 MB modules of RAM and is the 400 MHz model.

It supports up to 2048 MB of RAM and uses DDR PC3200 modules.

I highly suggest that you replace the 2 - 256 MB modules with 2 - 512 MB modules or with 2 - 1024 MB(1 GB) modules so you can increase the amount of RAM to 1024 MB(1 GB) or 2048 MB(2 GB).

Yes....It says they are all working normally. And yes that is the page I got my drivers from. I fear it is because of the chipset combined with the fact that the thing wasn't plugged in.....:(

If it means anything, when I got this back yesterday w/no driver's installed, it booted up to a page t6hat promted me to press F1 to continue. It said primary drive not found. Now that I have reconnected it and rebotted several times it still does that. And sometimes it gets to the welcome screen and just stays there....I have to shut it down and try again.....Am I still sinking?

I'll bet the June 2010 release of Microsoft DirectX 9.0c didn't get installed.

    Go http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en" target="_blank" class="externalLink" rel="nofollow">here to download and save the dxwebsetup.exe file.

Close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

The install process will detect and install only what multimedia files are needed.

Well, The Direct X wasn't installed and now it is....problem still there. Hell of a call though....Do you think it has anything to do with the boot problem. Where it says.... "Primary drive 1 not found"..Strike F1 or F2 ??? Also the writable cd-device[ the lower one] Is spinning much faster than the Cd-Rom ..if that means anything.....Probably normal.

It sounds like you have a hardware issue to resolve, but I don't really know without having a "hands on" with your computer.

Go http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/7747-2-primary-drive-found-message-boot" target="_blank" class="externalLink" rel="nofollow">here to this forum message, then scroll down to and read Anonymous's reply at the very bottom, dated 08-17-2009.

There are also several links here that you can read.

In Device Magager make sure DMA is enabled for the IDE Channel that the drive is attached to. Also in Device Manager click on the properties page for the cdrom and ensure the box is ticked that says "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device".

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have recently re-installed XP home edition and now do not have any window sounds. I can get sounds from the Media Player and VLC media player. The sounds are enabled within sounds and audio device but do not play. My PC is a home build (not by me) Asus A8V-E Deluxe and it has been a real pig over the last few weeks and I am starting to pull out the last of my remaining hair in frustration.

Hey guys, just thought I'd share this with ya!

I found a great program called MP3myMP3 (CNET Review here: MP3 My MP3 Recorder - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com) that records sounds that your PC makes.
In other words, the sound that YOU hear from it.
E.G. If you wanted to record an error sound that Windows Makes (I know that they're in C: Somewhere this is just an example) you'd just press record and then play the sound and press stop. Simple.

Just thought I'd share as it came in handy for me.

Ok so I have a simple, but annoying problem. I have no Windows Sound Events like the login sound, the logout sound, and when the battery is low. Every other sound like playing music and running YouTube videos work fine. Even when I turn on my laptop I hear the whole computer startup sound, but I don't hear the login one. I don't understand the problem. I went into personilazation and went to Windows Sounds, but when I select one and click "Play" I don't hear anything. I tried the other Sound Themes and they don't work either. I ran the Fix It program for Audio, and it didn't find anything wrong.

Hello! I have the same problem you have (or had?) with Windows 7 64bit. Everything is working good, but no system sound at all! No sound when I login..no sounds when i insert or remove USB devices..and so on! But sound is ok in youtube or in videogames...how did you fix that? If you fixed it?

Just set up my new Dell 660 desktop and noticed that with Windows Default sounds

That one sound I mention is the familiar sound you get when using IE and clicking

Is it possible that in 8.1 MS has eliminated those sounds?

    Hi,

I've got a weird one: I hooked the HDMI from the PC to the television and get great picture, but the sound is weird. I get system "dings" and whatnot, but I don't get the audio from games or YouTube videos. I've already tried setting the default audio device to the HDMI port, but I get sound from the speakers on the PC, not via HDMI.

The video card is an EVGA 750 Ti SC, running on a Biostar HiFi A85W.

    Thanks,
    Jack

A:Get system sounds, but NO YouTube or game sounds. Help?

If you have the Default Audio Playback Device set as HDMI then you should be getting sound only from HDMI. Sounds like that is not happening.

You should have the NVDIA High Definition Audio and the regular PC audio (whatever that is) shown in the Device Manager, Sounds section. If you do not have NVIDIA High Defintion Audio, or only the generic Windows installed "high Definition audio driver (codec) shown for the HDMI audio that could be the problem.

Uninstall the Video Card, in the Device Manager (do not uninstall the drivers) then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the Video Card. See if this corrects the problem. If not, install or reinstall the latest NVIDIA driver.

i am having windows xp running on my pc , once i tried to change my startup sound by the local made software but cant happen. In result the Startup and Shut down Sounds are disabled on my xp. But the rest of the sound are playing fine. All the Error, menu , minimize, critical sounds are working. Can any one help in getting those two sounds back.

A:Only Startup and Shut down Sounds are not player !

Try: Control Panel- Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices- Sounds and Audio Devices- Sounds- in the "Program Events" box scroll to "Exit Windows" and click on it. Below in the "Sounds" box click on the down arrow and find "Windows XP Shutdown.wav" and click on it. It should now appear in the box. Click on the black arrow to the right of the box to try the sound.
If OK go back to "Program Events" box and scroll to"Start Windows" and click on it. Back to "Sounds" box, click arrow, find "Windows XP Startup.wav": and click it. Check sound with black arrow as before. If OK click Apply then OK and exit Control Panel.
That should restore sounds unless those files were removed or corrupted by the other program.

I have no idea wghere to start except to say that Windows Media Player is as sweet as a bell so it's not the Creative sound equipment.

I should also add that I had Quake 4 running and had no problems with it. Concurrent with this problem raising it's head, I was unable to start Quake at all and it kept trying to load but then coming back to the Desktop so I took Quake off but still get the muffled noise.

Well idk how it happened but suddenly certain things especially voices are so quiet theyre almost silent. With video or audio with mp3 mp4 or wmv etc. My point is that its across the board all encompassing. Ive tried all the settings available for the computer, the players (MPC WMP and even iTunes), and my stereo. FYI the way its set up is that i have an input adapter that goes into the headphone jack on my tower then it all plays out of my stereo. Its not the problem tho because I have used that setup for like 5 years now without a problem. But so yea idk what to do. Please help. I can provide any information you need if u ask for it.

Other times, sound starts playing that sounds like a commercial in webpages that shouldnt have anything playing on them.
I ran MSE, Super Antispyware, Spybot, and Malware Bytes all in Safe Mode with no success.

    Thank you for any help.

You can have a great video card in your PC, but it will probably outlive its cooling fan by several years.
Well, this has been my own experience anyway.
And then finding a replacement fan for a specific video card is like finding hen's teeth. Good luck!

Well some time ago, I found a better alternative.
I've been saving CPU cooling fans since the 386 days and I've finally found a use for them, as replacement GPU coolers.

Here's a few of my GPU fan fixes:

This was my first fan transplant, on my old Winfast Video Card. It's ten years old and still running Great.

And, my second one, an Nvidea 230 card in my current PC. The tiny little fan was getting really noisy,
    so it had to go.

And just yesterday, a Dell Video card that came with NO fan at all, but just one LARGE heatsink.
After just a few minutes of operation, that heatsink would be way too hot to touch. Ouch!
So I wanted to really keep it cool, so I found a fan from an old PC that I had just scrapped out.
A great little fan, with Ball-Bearing motor, moves a lot of air and makes a great cooler for this Dell
video card. The card already had the power socket for a fan, so I used it to connect the fan.

So for me, a failed GPU cooling fan, or no fan at all, is just a small bump in the road, so to speak.

I hope this will inspire some DIY guys to do a quick fix to their own video card, when the fan fails.
It doesn't have to be pretty, but it does have to work.

    Happy Holidays!

I'd delete my old topic if I could, but apparently I got a few things wrong. >_> Mod Edit: A Staff member deleted it for you ~ Hamluis.Anyways, I just got a new hard drive and motherboard for my computer today. I found that the green port doesn't work for whatever reason (and I'm not bothered by it unless it could fix this problem) so I managed to get the blue port to work by changing the settings to quadraphonic. Now that I've done that, my music player works, as does the test sound on SoundMax. However, everything else (Youtube, other internet stuff, any of my computer games) doesn't work. Looked around for a bit, nothing I found seemed to point to why.

System crashed. Restored system with original Packard Bell Recovery Disk. Also reinstalled Modem Blaster. A while back got new modem, sound card and new hard drive. I do not know what kind of sound card was installed but before it crashed we had sounds on the computer. Now only plays CD's. In the device manager it says I have A Creative Labs Sound Blaster Pro. It has a triangle by it with !. Under Properties it says device failure. Try changing your drivers for this device, or see hardware documentation code 2. Now that I've wrote this letter under the Sound blaster the exclamation mark is gone and it says it is working properly. Didn't say that before. Don't know what I did. But under multimedia the sound blaster says it has an unknown problem. I tryed re-installing the Modem Blaster, which I suppose installs the sound blaster. It puts it on system but it doesn't work. Is there any thing I can do or does it need tech help? Any help will be appreciated.

    Sound Troubleshooter

If you have them, uninstall and then re-install your audio drivers. Sometimes this will fix a glitch.

Check that the Windows Audio service is set to Automatic and Started (Start => Run and type in "services.msc" {without the quotes}).

If it's missing, download and run this fix:

    Line 371 - Left

Open Device Manager (Start => Run and type in "devmgmt.msc" {without the quotes}).
Expand System devices, and check that 'Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator' is present and is "working properly".
During the routine you may see "Driver is enabled but has not been started".
If it's not present, or not "working properly", or you get the above message, see at the end of this post.

What's the operating system? XP, Win7, Etc.? For Win 7 you can go to Sound in the Control Panel and then the Sound Tab on the box that pops up. You can add and remove whatever sounds you like. It's probably somewhat the same for XP.

Hello, I have just done a factory reset on my pc and I cannot get my earphones to work. Neither can I record from my mic. I have tried all options in my sounds and playback/recording, but none of them will get me any sound, record or playback. I had this problem when I last performed a reset and someone gave me a link to a site called MajorGeeks that allowed me to uninstall and reinstall the drivers and it worked, but I cannot find the link. I went to the site, but could find anything like what I wanted. If anyone knows how I can get the link, I would be so very grateful. Any help would be appreciated.

    My sounds aren't working.

When I restart my computer it shows new hardware found, bus controller and something audio. Under device manager there is an exclamation mark by both and states the drivers are not installed.

I did find the drivers for both, but when I tried to reinstall them I got error messages, one was missing a file and the other said that the driver could not be installed using the current graphics dervice? So maybe that one is the wrong driver. I'm sure you will need more information just let me know and I will give it to you. I beleive I have an onboard sound card. The computer is an E Cube CF-S968l if that helps at all.

    Hi, just a quick question.

I have recently set up a new machine running windows 7 (My first experience with 7) and was wondering if there's a way/program to execute audio files while the computer is idle. I have a Portal turret theme I made, and would like to run some quirky turret shenanigans while the computer is idle such as:

    Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

    Are you still there?

    Is anyone there?

    Whyyyy?

Anyways, I have the sound files, I just need them to run while the computer is idle. I've suspected task scheduler set to only run the application while idle would be the way to go, but I don't know how to do that without setting it to run every 30 minutes for infinity.

    Thanks.

WIN XP Home : my audio device is listed as "RealTek HD Audio output" -

My WIN XP sounds is "No Sounds"

I use VZAccess (Verizon air card) to access the www; when it connects, my system blasts out some kind of electronic sound -- can't call it a musical tone or beep or any such; talked at length with Verizon tech and there's nothing on their end of options/preferences that affects this; also, when I unloaded the RealTek drivers, the sound disappeared, so concluded it's a RealTek issue.

Similar (not same) loud tone/sound happens when I adjust the RealTek master volume slider.

QUITE annoying ... and very unwelcome.

Haven't been able to find any kind of options/preferences/etc. associated with RealTek, so am at a loss about how to get rid of this racket.

    Any suggestions? Many thanks.

Hi, I've recently had a lot of spyware on my computer that I've been trying to get rid of. I've got a big part of it removed, but after my efforts my speakers have something weird going on. I can play music from my iTunes fine, but any sound I try to play from my browser won't play. I don't get any errors, I just don't hear anything.

The only audio device I have in my device manager is "Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device", which makes little sense to me. I'm not sure if that's referring to my speakers or not. When I go to Sounds and Audio Devices in the control panel though, it tells me there are no audio devices connected.

So my questions are: Is this "Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device" referring to my speakers? And if not, what can I do to get my computer to detect the speakers? Obviously they're hooked up right and functional, so what else could the problem be?

My operating system is XP. Hopefully I gave you guys enough information. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi guys!

So I've had this laptop for almost a year now, I've done a reinstallation of Windows once due to some problems. I've had this installation since last summer, and I used a genuine Windows image and the retail serial code.

However, couple days ago, my sound card started acting weird. I was trying to adjust the volume(using the button in task bar), but the slider didn't work as supposed, and soon the process sound stopped working. Now when I try to adjust the sounds, I'll only get a troubleshooter window, and it can't find any solution(this is so Windows, my phone is more reliable than my computer ). So I went to check out if the drivers are corrupted, but control panel shows that I got no speakers in my laptop. I checeked out which sound card I have using this program called Everest. It says my sound card is

    Device Description Type
High Definition Audio Controller [NoDB] PCI

There was no further info or links however. I googled it and aparentally the vendor of the card is Realtek. I went to their site and downloaded 'High Definition Audio Controller' drivers, installed and restarted, but my sound still don't work.

Please help me guys! I'm using my TV as my speakers right now

It's a laptop btw, so I haven't built it myself.

    Thanks.

    A:[SOLVED] Sounds don't work!

Hi, if you go do your device manager again, right click on the driver (which i presume has an yellow triangle on the right of it) and go to propperties, now go to details and look for the hardware ID.
It will be something like this: http://www.shortyscomputing.com/images/hardwareid.PNG

here you'll see an VEN_xxxx and an DEV_xxxx, these are your vendor and device ID of the Sound card. When you go to: PCI Vendor and Device Lists , and type in either the VEN_xxxx or the DEV_xxxx, you'll see what the sound card realy is, if you find it you can either seek for it yourself or let us (/me) do it for you.

I hope this will help you

I have this strange problem, where my sound scheme always seems to go to a BLANK scheme on startup. It's not the default scheme, it's not my custom scheme, but a blank one, with no name shown. I delete the scheme, and go back to my custom, but inevitably, in a bootup or 2, it'll be back to this mystery one? It's been doing it pretty much since I got the system, and I can't seem to find any reason for it. I've done all the requisite scans, etc., but can't find a culprit. I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with the MCE, but I'm not really sure.
