[Outlook 2013] Changed root folder path, permanently lost folders and messages?

Q: [Outlook 2013] Changed root folder path, permanently lost folders and messages?

I have a puzzler for the Outlook wizards. I'm wondering if somebody can help me recover my colleague's lost folders and messages. The short version is that I changed the Root Folder Path setting in Outlook 2013 for his IMAP account, resulting in the loss of several nested folders and contained messages that were apparently not synced by IMAP. Reverting the setting did not recover the folders/messages!
------- Long version ------------
Please bear with me on the explanation and please please do provide any relevant input that might help with this issue.
My colleague is using Outlook 2013 and had 2 IMAP accounts configured: 1 Gmail account and 1 other account (let's call it "Work"). At first, his issue was that several of his "Work" account folders nested under the Inbox were not syncing to his iPhone email client. I attempted to help by configuring IMAP folders in both applications.
The provider of the Work email specifies that the path for IMAP folders should be configured as "INBOX." Therefore I set this path on his iPhone and changed the Root Folder Path in Outlook 2013 for the Work account to the same, "INBOX".
Upon the change in Outlook 2013, his nested folders immediately disappeared, including all of the contained messages. I reverted the setting back to the default (blank), which restored only 1 folder with a handful of messages, one that apparently had been configured as an IMAP folder, but the rest of the folders were just gone!
!!! I had just eliminated the majority of my colleagues work email!
One important piece of information that I was given after the fact was that the disappeared folders from the Work account had been "dragged and dropped" there from the Gmail account folders that appeared in Outlook.
So where did the other folders and messages go?! Any help recovering the messages and (less importantly) folder structure would be greatly appreciated!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm having a bit of a problem with OE 6. It seems that when I opened it this morning, all my messages were missing. Inbox, Outbox, Deleted... all the 'default' folders were empty. Compounding my frustration, ALL of my 'user-created' folders are GONE. I poked around a bit looking for *.dbx files, and the only ones that show up are the defaults - and they're all <50k in size or so.

I assume the problem came about as a result of a Windows hard lock-up yesterday (long story, but I've got a wonky SATA cable to one HDD on my RAID 0, the cable was 'reseated', and the drive checked out fine - this has happened before with no 'unrecoverable' consequences), anyhow, I had to hit the reset button to get the rig to budge. Regardless, I find it hard to believe that improperly shutting down Windows would somehow result in the LOSS of folders, corruption sure, but total loss? I dunno.

Did the usual AdAware/SpyBot/Virus checks, and I'm 100% clean on all fronts.

Anyway, all insight/help/support is appreciated.

Using Outlook Express, I typed and sent a message and instead of OE sending it it went into the outbox. Went to that folder, opened the note and sent it. Checked my sent folder and that mesage was there but all the others previously sent messages disappeared. Can you tell me what might have happened and can you help me recover them? Thank you.

A:Lost messages in Outlook Express Sent Folder

To try the easiest thing first, in OE, select the Sent Items folder. Then up at the top click on View, point at Current View and make sure "Show All Messages" is checked. If it's not, click it to check it. See if the missing messages reappear.

At work we recently switched from using Outlook to using OWA. Everyone else's email in our office works without major problems, but when I open an email in my INBOX, when I change folders or exit and return, it has vanished. Also, I cannot create new folders. If I move the message to my DELETED folder, it behaves normally. I have had our sysadmin look at it and he just shrugs and walks away. I need help.

Any takers

Hi All,
Very new here so please bear with me!
I have Office 2013 running on Win8.1, Dell XPS 64bit desktop.

I use Outlook 2013 and receive my PayPal payment notification emails for my EBay business.

These emails form my Sales Receipts so are very important to me.

As I process them I alter the header title to contain the words Sales Receipt and have a conditional formatting rule to show these in green bold. They are then stored in a separate folder by year when I am done with them

Before doing this I cut and paste elements of the email into my Excel stock book s/sheet.

All this has worked extremly well for a number of years now but recently I find that when saving the altered message it SOMETIMES just dissappears completely, this usually happens on saving very quickly but this morning a message saved OK to th Inbox and then before my very eyes just vanished! This does not happen to all messages justthe occasional one at odd times.

I have tried searching all folders anf mailboxes but no joy?

Can anyone please help me out here?
Regards, Martin

I've got a weird issue with Outlook 2013 on Windows 8..  I've read several other posts that are kind of similar but they don't really apply.
So, Outlook 2013 uses the "Desktop Mail Notification" sound event..  unless I change the .wav file assigned to that event.  Then it instead uses the "New Mail Notification" event.  Then when I change the .wav file assigned
to THAT one, it changes again to instead use the "Notification" event.  Then when I change the .wav file assigned to "Notification," Outlook just won't play anything at all when receiving new mail.  It just flat refuses to use
anything but the default .wav files.
Has anyone run into this before?

Hi All

I am hoping this is a simple request. We are using SharePoint in our office and have several sites. SharePoint has an issue with over 5000 files within one site. Unfortunately we had a mishap the other day when a user dragged one folder into another and we suddenly had 8000 files in one site which then locked SharePoint and caused several problems.

Is it therefore possible to lock root folders to prevent a user from repeating this again please?

Once inside the folder we need users to be able to add, edit and delete files and folders.

Many thanks for the help.

I have been trying to use the Archive feature on Microsoft Outlook Exchange Mailbox – but what I have found is when I choose File| -> Archive| And then I choose to Archive items older than a certain date, it Archives all sub folders but it doesn’t Archive any emails that are in the main inbox root folder even though they are in the date range to be Archived.

Its very strange not sure why it doesn’t archive the inbox only archives subfolders – not sure if anyone knows why this is.

Hello gang!

I have an odd issue that I haven't seen before. It seems that we have some, including myself, a small latency switching between folders (About 3-5 seconds). Since my computer and email account is brand spanking new (IE only 40 emails total) I shouldn't have any problems here. Another colleague doesn't seem to be affected by this, but he is using Mac version of Outlook.

One thing a user mentioned is that after a domain migration (I wasn't here for that) that's when she noticed the issue. My account however was made after that so I'm a little puzzled about why this is happening.

Hello. When I got my new HP Windows 7 laptop several months ago I installed Office 2013. I recall at the time importing more than one personal folder into the new Outlook. Enough time has passed that I'm ready to get rid, if I can, of the annoyance having folders I don't use in the folder list on the left. Maybe I should be using them but I don't.
From the top: first I have personal folder with subfolders inbox, drafts, sent, etc.As far as I know I don't use these folders at all and I have cut and moved most of the messages in them to the second folder list.
The second list is [email protected] There I also have subfolders inbox, drafts, sent, deleted as well as the many other subfolders I've created for various needs.
So, can I get rid of the personal folders listed first? Should I keep them? If so, can I hide them somehow?

Our company uses Google mail for our email service. I have two IMAP accounts set up in Outlook 2013. Recently, all of the old Sent folder contents disappeared for one of the accounts and newly sent emails do not show up in it as well. The sent folder is working fine for the other account.

All of the sent messages do show up in the Sent folder when I access the account with my web browser. Recipients are receiving the emails. If I reply to an email in Outlook some of the received emails show an icon that I have replied, but not all of them. As far as I know, I have not changed any settings in Outlook 2013 or on the Google server.

Do I need to be checking and changing a setting in Outlook 2013 and or on the Google server?

Then scroll down to the Save messages and make sure that there is a check mark for "Save copy.......sent file folder"

I have discovered a huge number of similar files in the root directory of my C drive.  They all have names that start with "UDMFT" and end in 6 digits. The first one is 2,836,257 KB; and all the others are 1KB.  There is no extension on any of them.  I have looked at a couple of the smaller ones with Notepad, but they are unintelligible.  They were all created on 1/18/2015.
The second thing I wanted to ask about is all the TEMP***ROOT folders in the root directory.  The asterisks represent what mostly looks like filename extensions.  Almost all of them were created in March of 2014. I think this was when we were cleaning malware from this laptop.  I tried to find the topic, but couldn't.  I hesitate to say who I think was helping me, because I'm not 100% sure.
Can I safely delete these Temp folders?

A:Strange files in Root Directory amd multiple Temp***root folders

Don't delete things manually you might break something. To help clean up a lot of this stuff you right click your C drive. Go to properties under general tab 'disk cleanup' and then click 'clean up system files' button. Select what you want to delete. Careful though there are memory dumps, restore points and downloaded microsoft updates in there as well that you may want to keep. They can grow very large in size. However, they are all safe to delete through disk clean up. As an example on a Windows 7 updated to windows 10 you can delete the Windows 7 backup in there as well. Doing so you can't choose to go back to Windows 7. I made a clone of Windows 7 prior and after Windows 10 so for me I deleted it all & regained 20-30G's of disk space.

It would make more sense if that box was checked but it is not. Is there another place to uncheck something so that my deleted emails don't get deleted?
and okay, why am I concerned about messages being deleted from the trash folder anyway? because occasionally I need to look for deleted emails.  not very often but it has happened.  so I keep some of the ones that I've deleted.  well, not any more since I just discovered this issue in the last week.

Hi there
Why does NEW software seem increasingly WORSE than the older releases -- Outlook 2010 (using IMAP) gives me local data folders(data file) and the IMAP (server) folders.

I can just about tolerate the horrible colours but :

Sometimes I just move / copy emails from the IMAP folder to the local folder so I can then delete them off the server --otherwise I can get zillions of emails stored on the server.

Office 2013 Outlook doesn't seem to have a LOCAL set of folders -- how do I set this up or is this not possible any more

(Thinking of reverting back to Outlook 2010 !!!).

Another horror - Whatever you set to reading pane it always shows TWO lines - subject and 2nd line is a bit of the email

I can't get a nice clean display like Outlook 2010

What operating system?

Do you recall what changes: software, hardware, upgrades, that were made before this occurred?

Let us know.

Now this is probably going to sound very strange, but this is starting to get a little annoying so would like to see if it can be sorted. In Outlook 2007 I have my Inbox and a folder set up called Current Mail, which I place any in progress e-mails into so that I can keep a record of all e-mails I'm working on. This folder is sorted by the category of the e-mail which I am using to display its priority, i.e. which one needs to be looked at first. At the moment when I select this folder it auto selects the message right at the bottom of the Reading Pane, which is slightly annoying as my Priority 1 e-mails are right at the top and my lower priorities are at the bottom. This means that every time I go into the folder, I have to scroll all the way back up to find the e-mail I want to work on, or the e-mail that I was previously viewing. Is there any way to set this auto select to default to the previously viewed e-mail or the top of the list, rather than just hitting the bottom straight away? My Inbox selects the most recent message and doesn't seem to have any differences?

hey ad_taylor that is weird. i also have out2007 and in my folders i have reading pane on the right and if i first go to the folder it selects the top message. unless it's sorted ascending by date. i don't know. maybe try going to view, current view, customize current view, then try to play with those options, maybe go to group by and try unchecking the automatically group checkbox at the top. or you could try to just reverse the sort order.

Hi all, I don't have Office 2013 yet but I am intending to upgrade a computer to Windows 8.1 Office 2013. One of the primary uses of this computer will be email and currently the fastest way to do things is to send email directly from Word. I have looked it up on the net and found a website that says that you can do this with Office 2013:
The only problem is that right at the end it also says:
“Note that there’s no real record of your sent email except as a Word document. If you want to keep a copy of the message for yourself in your email program (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.), select Bcc from the Options drop-down menu (the same menu where you selected to add the From field) and enter your email address in the Bcc field.”
Unfortunately as these will be important emails I really need to know if they have been sent, without having to just trust the user to remember to save or Bcc it. So my question is: Is there a sure way to have email come up in the sent folder in Outlook when sent from Word 2013? If not I may not get Office 2013.
Thanks in advance for any help.

All of my messages that were in my sent folder(except for today's messages) are gone. Last night I was sorting thru my messages and checking some links to websites... when the x10 camera popup came on and froze my computer. I restarted the computer and only stayed on a few mins after that.
This morning when I logged on I saw that there were only a couple of new(from today) messages in my sent box.
When I go to Windows, Application Data, Identities, Microsoft, Outlook Express there are two sent folders listed .dbx One is the old one with many letters and one small one. The small (new) one says sent items [1] .dbx
How can I get all my old messages back?
