Cannot connect Homegroup after the latest patch

Q: Cannot connect Homegroup after the latest patch

After the Anniversary update on our two PCs, I find that Homegroup will not connect the two. One is running Pro 64-bit and the other runs Home 32-bit.

I can leave the Homegroup on my PC (Pro) and on the other. Then I create a new Homegroup on my PC and get the password. However, the other PC does not see any Homegroup to join on the network (only the option to create a new Homegroup). I never had any problem with this prior to the update.

If I select My Computer, I can 'see' the other PC but when I select 'Open' and box comes up with ID and Password. My PC is the only one of the two that is password protected. The Home PC boots right to the desktop.

Anyone having the same issue or know of a workaround?

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Cannot connect Homegroup after the latest patch

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After the recent Windows 10 creators update I can't set up or connect to the homegroup. I can't removed the existing homegroup and I can't create a new one. Even the couple of PC's connected to my network that didn't get the update can't connect to the homegroup
now.
When I try and use the password that use to work I keep getting  a message that the Homegroup is not found. I've tried several fixes and utilities that have been suggested and none of these have worked for me. Does anyone know how to get past this issue
with a fix that will actually work?

so I bought GTA IV , thinking that my system would be close to having the required specs.
Installed the game and found that I had graphics issues. So them did the usual updated drivers,
and downloaded game patches. The result? now the game won't load.

I went to the "Can You Run It" site and it tells me that my video card isn't good enough,
but the stats it lists , all pass. So color me confused. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Video Card
Minimum: 256MB NVIDIA 7900+ / 256MB ATI X1900+ You Have: GeForce 7300 LE
Features: Minimum attributes of your Video Card
Required
Video RAM 256 MB

Pixel Shader version 3.0
Vertex Shader version 3.0

3D Yes
Hardware T&L Yes
Pixel Shader version 3.0
Vertex Shader version 3.0
Upgrade Suggested: Unfortunately, your Video Card does not meet this requirement. Click here to see some recommendations.

So there must be some other specs that aren't listed that my card doesn't match because according to what i see my card should be good enough.

thanks for any input.

I need some major help with the latest Windows Update (the set of patches that came out this Tuesday to help with the security issues), I think it is causing issues for my laptop PC. I'm not computer illiterate but I'mdefinitely nothing more than a beginner and this is starting to make me panic a little ^_^;

My laptop has been having major Startup and boot issues since the update. My laptop freezes and goes to a white-grey screen. The computer does start up - ie: the screen comes on (white screen, unless I am lucky enough to get a boot screen for a moment) the fans run, but it takes several attempts at turning it on and off again, and hitting either F12 or F8 (still not sure which one is the one that works) to get to a screen that allows me to repair the Startup and go back to a retore point. The last time this happened it also beeped at me however I would not be able to tell you what the code sounded like (I...panicked somewhat).

However, the restore point was made just after Windows downloaded the updates onto my comouter (I had automatic updates on), and I cannot shut down without my computer wanting to install the updates. So I'm stuck in an endless cycle of downloading these updates, then being forced to restore.

Can anyone help with either finding a way to stop my laptop installing these updates, or does anyone know a way to troubleshoot the updates themselves?

We were fortunate that we had a spare M72e unit for testing as we have several around our offices. All of these systems are Windows 10, Version 1703, Build 15063.786. We wanted to test Version 1709 before mass deployment (WSUS and Network Push) to everyone in the company. The inital 1709 build came out with no problems an even the BIOS update worked (F1JY72USA.exe, F1KT72A). Everything was running fine for a day and we attempted to get the latest Windows Security Patches for Specter and Meltdown. We were able to get the system to boot Once after this, did a quick test on our software and then restart to verify that all was good. It wasn't. The Fans in the system started to run full speed and no boot screen showed up. I let the system run for about 3 minutes before I shutdown and tried again with the same results.Next I pulled the memory to see if I could get a Post Beep. I received the Beep and then attempted to boot again with the same results. After the last failure I attempted to Clear the BIOS by pulling the battery and switching the jumper. I left the machine overnight and then plugged it in the next morning and the system fans ran High the entire time. I got a couple beeps, but the system would keep restarting over and over with the fans running high over and over.3 boots later I pulled the power and put everything back (battery, jumper) and attempted to boot normally thinking the BIOS was cleared. The system has no display and the fans run High all the time and it ... Read more

Hey All,
Walked into complete chaos today at the office...seems like a Microsoft patch that was automatically updated on my users machines completely messed up their video settings.
The Dell GX270s would all boot up but then go blank after XP logo screen. As far as I can figure out, some new driver update threw the integrated Intel video driver out of whack causing it to use a resolution that the crt monitors can't handle. So far I have had to reinstall the intel driver and overwrite what was automatically installed.

Anyone else run into this today?

Hi Everyone

I'm having some HomeGroup issues as follows:-

- Windows 10 1607 X64 with latest cumulative updates
- Logged on as local Admin User to Desktop PC
- Homegroup that was previously working now no longer working (this Desktop was used to create the Homegroup)
- Instead, under Homegroup see "you have been invited to join homegroup" message
- Can't see Homegroup or Homegroup Password
- All of my other desktops & laptops are also Windows 10 1607 X64 with latest cumulative updates also have under Homegroup see "you have been invited to join homegroup"

I thought perhaps delete / re-create Homegroup would work - except I cant work out how to do this.

Any suggestions how I get my Homegroup working again????

Thanks

After applying KB4056894 to my windows 7 laptop, visual studio 2010 stopped working, manifesting all sorts of subtle bugs which did not go away even after fully repairing Visual Studio 2010.  In addition, the import settings operation returns fourteen
errors consistently, also new with KB4056894.  I just restored from a Nov 2017 system image and now everything is stable and functional again.
I have now blocked all future windows 7 updates, which is fine with me.  These updates always consumed a lot of time and I'll be happy to go without them starting now.
I also have windows 10 installed on the same laptop which I stopped using several months ago, in favor of Windows 7 due to the latest Windows 10 being such a horrible operating system.  It's even worse than Windows 8.  Sorry to say this, but it's

At least in windows 7 all control panel settings reside in one control panel! I believe that Microsoft has been working on the new metro/universal app for settings since 2011 starting in windows 8!  It's now 2018 and these settings are still split between
the UWP settings app and the desktop control panel.  I thought I took a lot of time to get things done, however Microsoft takes the cake when it comes to taking time to get things done.

It took me almost a whole work day to drill down to the single patch causing the problem coming with the latest patch day.

It is kb3109094 which breaks the remote X display of the Xclient.
Please may somebody at microsoft have a look into this as kb3109094 is marked as a security patch and I suspect the security has been tightened too much here.
The whole process of finding the problem cause was very time consuming and it raises 3 questions for me:
Q1. Why can't I just download the patches that my system wants
without also automatically install them?
(It takes about 20 minutes up to an hour for my system to check the patch status if I invoke it manually and this is a process I have to repeat redundantly if I only install a subset of the shown patches in a single swoop)
After I had manually downloaded the required KBxxx.msu patches one by one I also had to install them one by one.
Q2. Why is there no GUI option to select a bunch of patches from a downloaded directory and install them in one go? (not forgetting to set a restore point before installing)
Q3. Why is there no easy! feedback channel for problems resulting from updates?

It may become worse with windows 10 automatic updates if a bad update breaks something and people cannot give feedback on this quickly.

I monitor and record various Microsoft Updates for Work, Today I discovered what I believe to be a mistake in online security guide:

I was looking at updates for Windows 10 version 1607 for 32 and 64 bit systems when i noticed an odd patch out

It appears to me the 4054517 patch which belongs to windows 10 version 1709 32 bit was wrongly attached to the 1607 32 bit

Clicking on download for this patch gives you a download list for the wrong version of windows 10?

Is there anyone who can confirm this

I just purchased a new laptop with windows 8.1. I previously had two laptops and a desktop all running windows 7 and all connected to my network wirelessly. I had a homegroup set up on the desktop that works fine for all windows 7 machines, but I cannot get the new 8.1 machine to connect to it. The new machine sees that the homegroup is there but after I put in the password it says it no longer can find the homegroup.
I tried to run the homegroup troubleshooter and got a vague response about network problems, but no problems were detected by the network troubleshooter. I've also tried creating a local user instead of logging in with a Microsoft account but got the same message when I tried to connect. I'd really appreciate any help and suggestions. Thanks!

Hello MeKing, and welcome to Eight Forums.

For now, double check through the information and requirements in the tutorial below to see if it may be able to help in case it may just be something overlooked.

Homegroup - Join in Windows 8

Usually, you may need to have all computers leave the homegroup, create the homegroup, and join the computers again.

Hope this helps for now,

My laptop, previously connected to my Homegroup, crashed its hard drive. I've reloaded everything and am now trying to rejoin my homegroup. When I enter the password there is a long wait, then I get the message "Windows encountered an error." I ran the troubleshooter, which said to check network problems first. Windows Network Diagnostics said "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem". (Is there one? The laptop connects to the internet with no problem.)

It then said to run the HomeGroup troubleshooter on the computer that created the homegroup. I did so and got the message "Some problems were fixed" and that I should try again, but this didn't help.

Any ideas on how to proceed?

It sounds like the wireless connection may be connected to a guest network which may be in a different subnet, as guest networks typically are. If this is the case you can tell by checking the routers settings.

Hard to say if they are in different subnets without the ipconfig/all info from both machines.

You might want to check the Advanced Sharing settings in the Network and Sharing Center, make sure that Network Discovery, Printer and file sharing are turned on etc.

Reinstalled Windows (I tryed to install Windows 7 Premium 32-bit, but it didnt work (got stuck on Expanding Files 0%, than i got an error i cant remember it right now but i will look into history on another computer later)

Well still i rode that it doesn't matter (in Windows 7 Home Basic and Windows Starter you can only join one but you cannot create one)

Thanks for reading, any help would be appreciated.

Homegroups sometimes has problems connecting through a wireless network depending on the router being used.

You might try joining the Homegroup using a wired connection, then after you join you should be able to go back to using wireless and hopefully the Homegroup will remain visible.

Hi all,

I have a laptop, HTPC, and a desktop, all connected to my internet wirelessly. All of the systems were connected to the homegroup perfectly last night, but then I started having problem this morning. The HTPC was connected to the homegroup, but unable to detect any of the computers. Same with the rest of them. So I left the homegroup from the HTPC thinking I could just reconnect. Big mistake. After that the only option that was available to me was to "create a new group". After many restarts and settings, I decided to create a new homegroup. I then left the original homegroup from my laptop, so that I could join the new homegroup, but alas, the same thing happens, I could not see the old homegroup from the desktop, or the new homegroup from the HTPC! The only option available to to create another new homegroup! I did the same thing again with my desktop, and now all three machines each on its own homegroup. Has anyone here ran into this problem before and can help me?

This just suddenly happen, I didn't change any setting, I didn't download any update, everything was working fine last night, and I woke up this morning and they just decide not to work anymore. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I have set up a Homegroup on two laptops which use Windows 10 and both connect to the Homegroup. However, neither will display any computers on the Homegroup.

I have tried all sorts of things but all I seem to get from the Homegroup trouble shooter is that there are network problems. I have tried changing the advanced sharing options on both laptops to:

1. Turn on network discovery and ticking automatic setup ....
2. Turn on file and printer sharing
3. Allow windows to manage ....

Then clicking save changes.

When I go back into the screen the radio button that I selected for turn on network discovery has been deselected and the turn off button selected. Nothing seems to make any difference!

I am lost now, can anyone help?

A:trying to connect vm to homegroup

Homegroups only works on a standard LAN, it won't work in a Domain or with a VPN connection. You would be better served setting up a Workgroup type network for this.

I have a wireless router with 2 PCs connected to it:
1. A desktop connected via ethernet to the router. Also has the printer.
2. A laptop connected wirelessly to the router.

This is at home. Both are running Windows 7 Ultimate x86, both have default settings. Both are configured as 'Home' and I've run the troubleshooting etc etc.

I've tried both creating the homegroup on the Desktop and on the Laptop, both times when try and join on the other machine I just get the message "There is currently no homegroup on the network"

I thought the homegroup was supposed to make file/printer sharing easier, not more difficult!

Hi and welcome

Yes and No. If you have all win 7 machines homegroup works but not well. But there are some drawbacks to homegroup. First it relies on IPv6 which is buggy as heck.
What I would to is to change to work group and disable IPv6. In terms of the printer sometimes you have to install the printer locally so the drover is installed

Hope this helps and let us know if you need help

Hi

I have a Desktop computer with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and a laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit

The Laptop can see the desktop, files and printer
But the Desktop cannot see the Homegroup.
The desktop does not have the option to allow remote desktop connections, I don't know if that is connected to the same issue or not.

When I try to modify the Homegroup on the desktop, I get the error message mentioned above.

this computer can't connect to homegroup

Troubleshooter could not identify the problem.

Any ideas???

Thanks

There are a few different things that can cause this problem. You should first go through the Homegroup trouble shooter in the link below.

There are a couple of settings you should check in your router's set up page, option 2 in the link below explains what they are.

All, please forgive me if this has been answered somewhere deep in the threads, but I can't find it.

I have three computers running Win 8 that have completely failed to work in the network after I upgraded from 7 to 8.

Computer A is a desktop, it is connected to the router by Ethernet cable to a Netgear WRN3500L modem.

Computer B is a laptop, wirelessly connected to the network. (It has also been connected via Ethernet with no help.)

Computer C is also a laptop and wirelessly connected to the network.

We have created a homegroup, and it worked great, up until the upgrade....

Now, Computer A, sees everything and is able to connect to B and C via the homegroup, play songs, etc.... It is also able to see appropriate icons etc on the network as well.

Computers B and C get only generic icons in the homegroup and no files can be accessed. Attempting to connect via the network gives the following error:

\\COMPUTER (A B or C as appropriate) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network address is invalid.

I have done the Microsoft troubleshooter, checked to make sure the appropriate services are running, and done everything imaginable from Google and Bing searches to no avail. All three computers have identical settings. I even created an identical account from the one on Computer B on Computer A, but to no avail. Computers B and C can not acces... Read more

A:Homegroup Will Not Connect 3 Computers

Just to be sure the permissions are set correctly, right click on every shared resource on each of the three computers and select "Share with > Homegroup."

Hello.

I have a 2 computer setup both have successfully joined the homegroup I created. From comp A, I can access everything on comp B but comp B cannot access anything on comp A. I can see what's on comp A but if I try to go there it asks for credentials. Also tied to this (I assume), when I try and access the printer on comp A, the "Install Printer" button literally does nothing (screenshot).

I have no idea where to begin with this problem. I have tried all the suggestions on the forums with no luck. The homegroup advanced settings are set up to share files and printers. I've allowed File Sharing in Windows Firewall on both computers. I've completely left the homegroup and made a new one. Please help!

Thanks.

A:Can't connect to one computer in homegroup

The problem you described is usually caused from the time/date settings not being set correctly on one of those machines. You might want to check the Bios clock on your motherboard as well.

I'm not so sure about the button problem or if it relates to the Homegroup problem or not. You might try a system file check using the sfc/scannow command.

Most other Homegroup problems can be solved using the trouble shooter in the link.

I am working with 2 computers both are win 7. One is wired the other is wireless. the wired one is the PC with the homegroup that the laptop is tyring to connect to. The problem is the laptop will not connect because it says its not connected to a network (example home, work, or public) I reset it to Home Network. But when I go to the homegroup properties page. It still says that no homegroup can be selected since there is no network group selected. But when I go to the network properties page HOME network is selected. I have tried to change it from work to public as well but still get the same result. I need to connect this laptop to the other machine so I can use its printer. When I go through the trouble shooter it tells me to sync the time I have done that still get same result. Isn't connecting to other PC's supposed to be getting easier? Why does Microsoft need make this so difficult?

Hi guys,

I just set up my home network to have a homegroup.

After setting it up i went to my media pc (right next to my pc) and went to type in the password, and it comes up with incorrect password, so i went downstairs and tried it on a laptop and it connected fine ?? I tried changing the password and rebooting both machines. That did nothing, tried about 3 times. I then disbanded the homegroup, rebooted and restarted the homegroup and am still having problems connecting my media pc to it.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

This started as a HomeGroup issue, but seems to be more basic. Both 64-bit Win7 Home Premium computers were networking (wirelessly) fine using NetGear router, then I moved and switched to Uverse, then Xfinity routers. The issue is the same on both: In (Network and Sharing Center) => [Show full map], Laptop JOHN-PC sees the full map and after clicking on desktop MARY-PC can read all files. MARY-PC sees the full map but cannot connect to JOHN-PC--that is, the cursor does not change to a hand when hovering over it and neither right-click nor left-click is operable. I have Credentials set up in each machine to log into the account on the other: MARY-PC/Mary and JOHN-PC/John. But this is more basic than HomeGroup because even if I "Leave the HomeGroup" on MARY-PC and change its workgroup name to XWORKGROUP (different than on JOHN-PC), JOHN-PC can still read all files on MARY-PC. MARY-PC still sees the JOHN-PC icon but cannot access it. JOHN-PC/C: is shared.
.
MARY-PC can ping to IPv4 address of JOHN-PC. and browses the web fine. I've checked out most solutions I could find on the web. IPv6 seems to be enabled in both computer and router. All HomeGroup settings seem to be right. I tried enabling NetBios over TCP/IP though I thought that was outmoded and flawed. I've checked the list of services that are posted as being required for HomeGrouping. MARY-PC has Atheros Dualband adaptor. I will be happy to provide any other hardware/software details. Any help ... Read more

Disable any Firewall or Security Software for now, until you resolved the issue.

I am having an issue with a small network I have. I have 6 computers that are all running windows 7 pro or ultimate. We are all connected via a home group. All are able to connect to each other except one.

I get and error that says

"\\pcname is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The specified network provider name is invalid"

This is also causing me not able to connect to any network shared drive, while all the other computers are able to access them.

I have already done the troubleshooting guide for the home group. rejoined the home group. so anything would be helpful.

If this helps at all, this all started when adobe bonjour decided to freak out and not allow me to connect to any network resources. To resolve that i was forced to uninstall bonjour. This issue was only cause by Adobe CS3, which i have, and i have not reinstalled adobe CS3 as of yet.

At this point i do not have a restore point to refer back to so I am sunk there.

Please any help would be wonderful
