SATA HDD in laptop with Ultra ATA connection

Q: SATA HDD in laptop with Ultra ATA connection

My hard drive recently went on me, so I ordered a new one. I guess I did it kind of hastily, since upon its arrival today, I came to find out that it is an SATA hard drive, while my laptop only furnishes an Ultra-ATA (44 pin) connection. DOH! My question is: does anyone know if an adaptor exists which would allow me to use this new hard drive on my laptop? And if so, any ideas where I might be able to get it? I did find that such adaptors exist for desktop computers, but haven't been able to find anything for the laptop. I've also found the universal USB adaptors, but that won't help either due to the fact that this will be my primary/only drive, and needs to be bootable. Any help here would be appreciated, I'm really trying to avoid returning this thing.

Thanks in Advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just got a new PC, and realized that the hard drive is SATA. I have a brand new ultra ATA 300GB drive I was planning on using as a slave, but wondering how to connect it, if possible. Can I hook it up as a slave on the same cable as the CD/DVD drive? Otherwise, I don't see how I can get it to work. Sorry for the ignorance here, but I'm new to SATA... am I SOL with the UATA?

A:using both SATA & Ultra ATA?

Yes you can do the ATA HDD as a slave on the same cable as the CD Rom no problem.

Better yet if you have an ATA controller on your board you more than likely have a second one if you do have 2 ATA ports on the MB then do a single ATA device on each and then keep the SATA HDD and have the bios set to SATA boot before IDE boot.

This is only if you have 2 ports as it will give you better device performance than having the CD Rom and the HDD on the same cable.

How to put a SATA & Ultra ATA on the same mobo?

I just recently bought a new mobo that has only one IDE slot. I have two DVD drives, 2 Ultra ATA drives ( Seagate & Western Digi), and a WD SATA drive. The SATA drive will run my OS how do I configure the jumpers or do i need them at all on the ATAs?? I tried once already with the jumpers set to slave but I almost burnt out my CPU (AMD Phenom X4).

Mobo - ECS GeForce7050M-M (I know it's an ECS!! Please don't hurt me! LOL!!)
CPU - AMD Phenom Quad Core 2.4GHz
DVD 1 - LG GH20 SATA Multi DVD Rewriter
DVD 2 - Samsung CD/DVDW SH-S182M
SATA - WD Caviar SE16 320SATA
ULTRA ATA - Seagate 300Gb & WD 120Gb
Memory - Crucial 2x1gb DDR2 (PC2-6400)

THe jumpers on the IDE Drives will have to be set either Master and Slave, or both set to CS.

Hi all =). I'm getting a computer made with a 450w power supply. I'm getting a Geforce 6800 Ultra at least, but the company recommends a 480w supply for this card. I've heard of people having problems with their power supply not being able to cope with this card, but I don't know exactly at what power their power supplies ran. Will I run into any problems with the power supply I'm getting, or should I upgrade to 480w or more?

Don't know if you need this information also, but I think this may also effect my power supply:

Asus K8V SE Deluxe Motherboard
Athlon 64 3400+
1.5 GB pc3200 DDR Ram
120 GB HDD

Also heard that AMD uses less power than Intel or something...sooo I was thinking that perhaps my graphics card will not be affected as much because of this...but dunno. Help would be greatly appreciated =D.

A:Regarding Geforce 6800 Ultra, Ultra Extreme, or Asus v9999 Ultra Deluxe

One, Use a title once.

Two, nope nVIDIA GeForce 6800 families or newer REQUIRES 480w of psu minimum, PERIOD. it is not matter how much watts amd or intel uses, what you means that you must have 480w or higher to have GF 6800 working properly.

Recommendation, get ATI Radeon 9600XT or 9800XT, they merely used up less than 350w.

You will get better games or things out of ATI instead of nVIDIA due to power usages

I can see the hds in the Bios, I do not want to run it using raid, just normal mode using nforce4 sata controller.

Welcome to TechSpot

Yes I'll try.
You do need the drivers on a non bootable floopy.
When starting the install of XP (boot from cd?)
almost immediately you are ask to press f6 to load
any third party scsi drivers.
All MoBo's I use that have sata it's reffered to as scsi
and requires the drivers on a floppy(floopy).
Try this and post back what happens or if you
need more or dif help.

I bought a Maxtor Ultra ATA internal hard drive, and want to install it as a backup drive in my HP m1170n. However, the m1170n requires an SATA hard drive. Is there a converter, adapter, etc. that I can buy to make the Ultra ATA compatible with the m1170n? Please provide specific model numbers for any suggestions, if possible. Also, please advise about how much it should cost and if it is easy to install. Many thanks.

Hi. I have a Intel 915GAGL Mobo. There are 2 SATA Hd's installed and an ATA CDR drive. I would like to add a Segate Ultra ATA Hd. It is a ST120026A-RK/100. I was given the new Ultra ATA drive so I might as well use it. My case & PS are big enough.

Thanks, Steve-x8086

A:Solved: Using SATA - Ultra ATA drives on an Intel 915GAGL Mobo

The answer to my question is YES, the 915 board can run the Ultra100 ATA drive. The board has 2 PATA ports as well as 4 SATA ports and all can run up to 150.

I was able to install the Ultra ATA drive and it worked fine with the SATA drives.

worked fine for a few days, moving files and adding new ones. then i used norton ghost to clone my main hard drive to the new maxtor. after reboot the system was VERY SLOW to boot and run programs, and i noticed a clicking sound from the new drive.

the drive is a maxtor ultra sata, and i used the maxtor sata/150 pci card to connect the drive.

any suggestions on what went wrong?

i uninstalled norton ghost and also reformatted the new maxtor drive, but the computer is still slow when it is connected. when i disconnect the drive, my computer runs fine.

any help / or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. and hope everyone had a safe holiday weekend

A:..a few days after install of Maxtor Ultra SATA 160GB Hard Drive...

Hi and welcome. Clicking sounds and hard drives are always bad news.

You might download the drive diagnostics from Maxtor's website, if you didn't get a floppy or cdrom with the drive. Test the drive and see what error reports pop up.

I wanted to know if there is a way to connect a SATA hardrive to an older motherboard that has no SATA connection

A:Adapter to connect SATA HD to motherboard with no SATA connection?

You can always use one of these PCI SATA adapter cards: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ESTMATCH&N=-1&isNodeId=1&Description=pci+sata

A computer as old as you're describing will likely have an old type standard PCI slot, and NOT a PCI-E (PCI express). be certain to verify which slot you have, before you make a purchase. These are two entirely different interfaces, which are not interchangeable.

I've got a Dell Precision Workstation M70 and I was thinking about putting in a bigger HDD.

The specs on the HDD say that it's an Ultra ATA-6 HDD. I've not come across this before. I googled for drives and it seems like the biggest they come in is 80GB (which I already have).

Is this another type of HDD connector - in addition to SATA and IDE?

Hi...Ihave just installed the Ultra VNC server onto my fathers machine and the viewer onto my machine....
I entered his IP Address as the Host name and tried to connect....But got a Connection failed message.....??
We were talking on the phone at the time I asked him to run the server (to be ready when we both then connected to the Internet) then we both put the phone down and connected to the Internet to use Ultra VNC....
Does this mean his server then stopped working because we were connecting to the Net and that he should run it again AFTER we connect ?......or am I doing something wrong.....
All I have done is entered his IP Address...nothing else....should i be doing more ?
Do i have to set port settings.....?
Im also not sure if i have the right IP address...how do i find this on windows 98 ?
Basically ...how do we use this thing ?

Recently my computer has been having problems with slow internet speeds. It got so bad that I decided to reinstall Windows XP, but the problem remains. I have used several spyware scanners, none of them find anything. I had this same problem almost exactly a year ago, luckily reinstalling XP worked that time. I've ran bandwidth tests on another computer in our home network (a Mac), which always come up with normal speeds (I have a 8/0.5 mbit line, tests show about 6 mbit downstream for the Mac, which is normal for my ISP, while my XP PC currently shows 25 kbit, utterly ridiculous). It must be some sort of spyware hidden deep inside my system that creates a bottleneck for all internet traffic coming to my computer. Either way, something's over-processing/tracking my incoming data, effectively killing my connection. This is something that planted itself a long time ago, because I've experienced dodgy internet for a while now. My Mac never does this.

Before I reinstalled, I was using Norton for virus protection (this time around though, I'll use something else). My router works as a firewall, so I don't need a software one. I'm pretty much invisible on the internet according to a port test (I think it was called Shields Up!, or something similar).

I've considered formatting the disk my OS is installed on, but I currently do not have a spare disk to back-up all my data on. Still, you'd think reinstalling the OS would solve it, but nope.... Read more

recently my computer is suffering from serious lag-ness after i fiddled around with msconfig. although i've reset it to load all device drivers again already.. the problem still stays.

1. it stays at the first boot-up screen for quite a few seconds.
2. it takes around 6seconds again before it goes to the windows loading screen.
3. it takes around 2mins for it to finish loading all my startup items, where i've already removed all non-essential startups ( before that, with the same startup items, it took less den 15s to load everything and back to idle )
4. there's a rundll error, where they cannot find one of the following dll files. it ends with "ntfy.dll" i tried to search for it on the net, but to no avail. that's why i feel puzzled about it.
5. i took a glimpse at the processes, there doesn't seem to be any suspicious service running.
6. now i can't even connect to the internet, my connection cannot be found in network connections. when i tried to run ipconfig, it couldn't query my hostname. i'm now using the office com. ( hence i can't post the HijackThis log here )
7. i did a full system scan with nod32 & spysweeper, wiped out everything but problem remains.

what could be the problem?

here are the specifications of the computer : ( relatively new com )

My new laptop has currently 8.1 installed to a 500gig 840 EVO SSD, I replaced the 1tb hard drive it came with and did a clean install.

I'd like to utilize the M.2 sata port with a Crucial M550 500gig drive for windows, and re-install the 1tb hard drive for storage.

I have an external USB 2.5" SATA enclosure I can create an image of my current SSD/8.1 to, then I assume using Acronis or some such, restore the image to the M.2 SSD once it's installed.

I suspect Windows is going to object to having been moved from a regular SATA SSD to the M.2 SSD.
I'm not sure how Windows see's a M.2 (non-pcie, it's regular SATA M.2) VS a "regular" SATA port.
It's an HP Envy i7 laptop fwiw so it should be all Intel hardware.

Any thoughts/experience? Am I over-thinking it?

A:Move Windows from SATA SSD to M.2 SATA SSD on laptop

That should work fine, as long as bios recognizes the M2 drive. Have done similar with many msata's, all went well. Restore the image, remove the original drive, and see if it boots, no harm can be done by this.

Am recommending having a windows installation usb stick available, can be used to fix windows boot settings if needed. And keep the original image safe for some time until one is 111% sure all is well. Good luck.

Hi guys, back after a few months away from this great site/forum.

I have a question regarding the CHAINTECH VNF4/Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard I was searching all over the web but can't seem to find out if this motherboard will support the new AMD 64 X2(dual core) 939 CPU? It says it supports the AMD 64 & 64 FX CPUs, but what about AMD 64 X2(dual core) 939 CPU?

If anyone here can help me out, I'd be grateful. Thanks.

A:CHAINTECH VNF4/Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard

Most nForce4 based motherboards support such CPUs but not all of them do so out-of-the-box. Make sure to have a motherboard from the latest production batch. If not, it might be handy to have a single-core to flash the BIOS in case it doesn't want to power up with the dual-core one.

Can I put an Ultra ATA hard drive in a laptop that used a SATA hard drive. The reason I want to do this is because a friend's laptop won't boot , not even in safe mode,( imo the hard drive is nackered) and of course there was no backup done. The files are needed. Now of course you'll say why not use Acronis to transfer the files to an external HDD but the problem there is that none of my friends laptops USB ports are working( haven't checked this but I'm assured it is true), so there is now way to connect an ex. HDD to it. What I'm thinkin of doin is putting the HDD into an old laptop of mine and using Acronis to transfer the files to CD or an external hdd.

What ye think? I'm inexperieced with laptops so please be gentle if this is a stupid post.

A:Can I put an Ultra ATA drive in a laptop

It is possible that you might be able to connect an ATA HDD to the buss where the CD/ DVD drive is connected. Whether that is SATA or PATA is anybody's guess.

Although, if the Laptop's HDD is broken, I'm not exactly sure what you think you're going to accomplish by doing so. If it's dead, it's dead, and that would require the drive to be dealt with data recovery methods. Very expensive.

Plan "B" involves running a cable to a desktop from the laptop, and offloading the data that way.

However, dead is dead, be forewarned

Hello everyone. I was hoping you all may know of an excellent laptop that can handle or
run The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC game on Ultra settings smoothly?

From a few hours of searching, I have come across a few laptop brands and models
backed up by actual videos showing that it can handle the game with High or Ultra settings.
I am going to put all that I found in a list below and would like to know which one you
think would be the best one out of the bunch. I know prices will vary and some of these
are no longer in stock, but I may still be able to find them elsewhere, so I will still include those too.

If you all have any suggestions on a laptop outside of this list, do let me know.
I was hoping the price range could be below $1,000. I will try to include links to
each one so that you can compare the specs faster instead of having to search each one up.

They say on most of these videos that the recording program they use to record their game play causes the skips and makes the FPS drop by 10 or so.

A:Laptop that can run Skyrim on Ultra Graphics

You can find laptops for gaming. And as you noted, you will pay more for a laptop over a desktop, sometimes as much as twice the price. And while it's nice to have a mobile computer, it's only mobile in the sense that it's easy to pick up and move about. Run time on battery power is very short when you are stressing the hardware and gaming machines are more likely to experience heat related issues. Just a few things to stress to your friend before spending the money and learning the hard way.

I have an XPS15 laptop (it says Reg Model P56F under the XPS door at the bottom).  This laptop is extremely sensitive to vibrations, hits or jolts to its case.   For example it can be running normally, but if you drop a pen or pencil, onto the keyboard area, it will freeze.  If you have it in your lap and rotate around a chair and it bumps the edge of a desk... it will freeze.  If you bump it into anything, chances are it freezes.  Usually it freezes with a scrambled screen, sometimes portions of the scrambled bits are flickering or moving, like an old NES game that you had to blow on the cartridge before it played.  Sometimes it freezes with the screen going black (but the backlight remains on).   The only way to recover is to hold down the power button until the laptop turns off.  Then you can power it back on and wait 5 minutes at the Windows 10 Please Wait... spinning circle until you can log in again.

I've already had the laptop sent out for this issue.  It came back with an upgraded 4k touch screen.  I love the screen, its such a great, free upgrade.  But the problem persists.  It's not AS sensitive as it was when it had the regular 1920x1080 matte screen.  Before you could drop a pen NEXT to the laptop and that small of a vibration would cause the freeze.  Now you can bang on the table as much as you want, and as long as you don't touch the actual laptop, it remains oper... I just got a flip video camera Ultra and shot a few videos. When I plugged the USB cable into my Toshiba laptop (I use windows vista if that matters) and double clicked on the icon in "My computer", it said I had to format the disc. Ive had this happen before with other things, I don't remember what they were though unfortunately. So I clicked "format" and when I did a box popped up alerting me that by formatting the disc, it would erase everything on it.

I cant afford to loose the videos I have on my flip cam. Is there some way to get the videos to upload onto my laptop without formatting the camera or as my computer calls is, the disc? When i read the info that came with the flip video camera, it said that some software was supposed to open and install when I plugged the USB into my laptop, but nothing popped up. I had to open up "my computer" and find the camera icon.

My company has issue me a Lenovo T470s and an Ultra Dock to replace my existing equipment. I have two external monitors connected to the docking station with display port cables. The problem that I am experiencing is that if the laptop is docked and the cover is open, I get video on the laptop display and one external monitor. The other external monitor gets no signal and goes to sleep. If I close the laptop cover, I get video on both external monitors. A co-worker told me that this was working as designed and that the solution for getting video on all three monitors was to connect one external monitor to one of the display ports and the other to the DVI port. (He hadn't tested this configuration and is using two display ports with the laptop cover closed.) I tried my coworker's suggestion and got the same result but prior to switching to DVI, I downloaded and installed the latest(?) driver for the HD Graphics 620 adapter from this website (lenovo.com) and that seemed to solve the problem (when using two display ports) but after shutting the laptop down, I had the same issue the next day. What I want, is to have the laptop cover open and still be able to use two external monitors and get optimal resolution on all three monitors. What's the best configuration for achieving this? (Don't guess, like my co-worker. Give me something you've tested and that you can confirm that it works.)

A:Compatibility of Kensington Combination Ultra Laptop Lock (K64675US) with Dell XPS L502X

Hi amitd,
The security slot on a laptop is of universal standard and it will be compatible with any Laptop Lock. You may consider purchasing the same.

Hi, hopefully should be straight forward enough...

I have just bought one of these space saving Acer Revos which does not come with an Optical drive.

I have a Blu-ray reader (dvd writer) which is SATA, but the Revo only has USB or eSATA.
So... i was wondering what is needed to get this (SATA) drive to work via eSATA or usb?

Is it as simple as a SATA to eSATA cable or will this not give the necessary power to the drive?

Or do i need an eSATA enclosure, and if so what size for an optical drive 5.2?

Cheers for any help.

I recently installed a new 160GB SATA Hitachi hard drive on my computer. I installed windows on it fine but the hard drive seems to be performing very poorly. It seems to have issues with simple multitasking. Whenever I am installing anything my system almost comes to a stop if I try to do anything else - sound starts skipping, mouse starts skipping, programs stop responding, etc... I do not have SP1 installed yet and was wondering if this is the problem and if not what else is the most likely suspect. Also I have no drivers for the SATA controller on the mobo. there were only drivers for the RAID on the floppy and no sign of them on the CD unless they were incorporated in some other driver set. There are no drivers for it on the website either.

Hi All Merry Xmas to everyone
Q i have installed MSI k9A2GM V2/V3 M/B with 5oo GB H/D (sata connection) I want to connect another H/D but it is an IDE connection as 2nd H/D (slave), The book says it supports IDE H/D drives and other devices, will this work as a 2nd H/D with the main being sata.and how to go about it? i have installed IDE connections before for 2nd H/D but not IDE & Sata
many thanks to any info. TWO BOB

A:ide connection/sata

o.k. two bob, from what I could see, you have the connector for an IDE HDD, I would jumper that HDD for slave and plug it in after you power down of course, and your bios/cmos should recognize it, if it doesn't, write down that good ole info about the HDD and manually input it to get it to recognize it, and then try it again.

Hello guys,

Upon trying pretty much everything I know and what others have advise me without success I decided to come here getting help from you, since there is a lot of knowledge members and I usually come here looking for answers and advices everytime something bad happens with my system.

The issue is as follow - last week my system began freezing without reason and rebooting would make the following message appears "disk boot failure, insert system disc and press enter" and my motherboard (Asus A8N-SLI) wouldn't recognize the HDD. I would left it off for a few minutes and it would work fine, at least until freezing again. The issue got worse and I worked it out by slightly budge the HDD SATA cable where it connects to the motherboard.

However after a few days the issue turned up again. I connected the HDD to the other SATA slots, checked other SATA cables and other HDD but the problem persisted. Checked the power supply's cable and it was working fine and the HDD is also working fine in other computers. I thought it was the motherboard SATA connectors that are damaged since HDD IDE works fine and bought a Delock SATA II PCI Express Card but it also doesn't recognized the HDD.

Sometimes the DVD drivers' names on the BIOS are wrongly written, too. Instead of Sony it displays SYNE or POENERR instead of Pioneer or something along the lines.

I no longer have any idea nor does anyone who could help me. What do you guys think? Could it be that the motherboard SAT... Read more

A:Malfunction on SATA Connection

welcome to the forum.

Well youve been prity extensive with your testing
Firstly try updating your chipset drivers for your motherboard.
Then id do some memory tests, if the HDD cant write to the ram then all kinds of issues persist.

Then id start flapping as it would point towards a dying or dead board.
