Windows 10 Free for Windows 8 Users

Q: Windows 10 Free for Windows 8 Users

I was reading an article, and it said that Windows 10 would be free for 8 users. Do all versions of 8 get it, or just 8?

I refuse to go to the Windows 10 forum to find out, because they were really ugly about things.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Microsoft has so far said nothing on the subject. So anything anyone else says at this point is just speculation.

Based on past events with earlier versions of Windows, they will at least probably offer a substantial discount to those that upgrade to Windows 10. Beyond that, who knows?

Hello, everyone. This is my first post. I have been in touch with Microsoft 3 times to ask this question and each time I get referred on to someone else. I would have thought that the answer would have been straight forward so I looked around and found you guys. I guess you can tell from the "title" what I was asking about but here it is anyway.

"will the free download of Windows 8.1 (for existing Windows 8 users) be released on DVD for those with a very slow broadband connection? It would take me 48 hours to download at around 20kb/s - I really need it on disc."

I am waiting for the response to this second rewording of my question and will post Microsoft's response here. In the meantime I would appreciate knowing if anyone here has an answer.

Thanks.

?Do not install any third-party software on Windows 10 PCs?

It's a well-known fact that many OEMs and retailers across the world are shipping Windows computers, no matter the OS version installed, with lots of useless software solutions that do nothing more than to slow down the PCs themselves and to create additional issues.

Anti-virus apps, word processors, toolbars, and other additional software tools that aren't specifically requested by users are all installed on these computers, so it takes time and effort for users to remove them completely.

And yet, this has to end in Windows 10, users claim in a new suggestion on UserVoice, as Microsoft needs to work with OEMs to avoid installing unnecessary software on computers powered by this new operating system.

I hope those same people that want all bloatware removed before they get their new computer realized that bloatware lowers the cost of the new oem computer. Also one person bloatware is another's favorite utility.

Now it would be nice if microsoft had an uninstall utility in the control panel (or whatever they are going to call it in win10) where you can select everything you do not want and it all will uninstall at the same time. That would save a lot of time.

The latest batch of market share statistics provided by Net Applications for desktop operating systems puts Windows 10 on the second position in the rankings, but it also reveals something totally unexpected that happened last month.

Windows 10 has actually lost market share last month despite the fact that everyone expected the operating system to continue its growth, which could be a sign that Microsoft?s 1 billion devices running Windows 10 goal might take a bit longer to become reality.

While it?s a bit too early to tell whether Windows 10?s market share could stagnate for a longer period or not, the September 2016 performance was clearly below expectations, especially because this happens only one month after Microsoft ended its free upgrade campaign.

As part of this promo, Microsoft often became rather aggressive and sometimes users accused the company of forcing the upgrade on them, with many complaining that Windows 10 was installed on their PCs even if they didn?t ask for it.

No forced upgrades, no growth
But now that Windows 10 is no longer available for free, the operating system?s growth not only that slowed down but it also stopped completely, and this can only be bad news for Microsoft.

Windows 10 dropped last month from 22.99 percent to 22.53 percent, and while the decline isn?t substantial, it?s a sign that the new OS might really struggle to get ... Read more

   Information
Beginning of 2013 there was about 40,000 apps ready to be downloaded at the Windows Store. The Store grows rapidly, faster than other similar stores for other platforms.

Not all Windows Apps cost money. In fact a great number of games and apps is available for free, ready to be installed. This is a collection of Windows Store Apps the users of the Eight Forums have tested and used and want to recommend.

The idea is to give you a short description, only a few words for you to get the idea what the app does. If you are interested you also get a direct link to app at Windows Store where you can get more information before deciding if you want to install the app or not. Notice that as Windows Store URL protocol is not recognized by our forum software you need to copy the link manually and paste it to IE10 addressbar (protocol ms-windows-store is only recognized by IE10, it does not work on other browsers).

If you have found an app you would like to share with us, reply to this thread giving the app name, short description and enough details for us to find it in Store. Remember that the app should be free, no test or paid for version.

Have fun!

   Tip
You need to copy the full Store Path for the app, paste it to IE10 and hit Enter to open app presentation and installation page on Store. Notice that because of forum software word wrapping the link might be divided on two rows. You need to copy and paste it as one continuous link. ... Read more

A:Multiple Windows 7 Users-Switch between Users-network stops working

When switching users, it's always a good idea to have User 1 close out any applications and documents they have open and then log out before User 2 logs in. It sounds like you have fast user switching enabled, but I'm not aware of that causing any network issues -- unless User 1 was doing something that required a network connect.

Check the Event Viewer for error logs from the time it froze when you tried to disable and enable the network adapter. Post the event ID and description here if you need help diagnosing the issue from the log files. Perhaps another fix is to disable fast user switching, so that users are always forced to log out before someone else can log in.

Windows XP Has More Users than Windows Vista and Windows 8 Combined, Avast Says

Security company Avast has published global Windows usage data as part of the PC Trends Report (PDF document) for the first quarter of 2017, revealing that Windows 7 continues to lead the market with a share that?s close to 50 percent.

While it?s important to note that these figures come from computers running Avast, they do align with the statistics provided by research firms whose main activity is monitoring operating system usage, so there?s a good chance these are accurate.

First and foremost, there?s leader Windows 7. According to Avast, the operating system launched in 2009 is currently powering more than 56 million computers where its antivirus product is installed, and this means a share of no less than 48.35 percent.

Windows 10 is growing, the security firm says, and it managed to reach a share of 30.46 percent, which accounts for a little over 35 million devices running Avast security software.

Windows XP still a super-popular choice
But what?s a little more worrying for everyone, including here Microsoft, users, and Avast itself, is that Windows XP, which was launched in 2001 and no longer receives security updates since April 2014, is still running on more than 6.5 million computers. This means that it has a share of 5.64 percent, more than Windows 8 (2.51 percent) and Windows Vista (2.08 percent) combined.

Windows 8 was launched in 2012 as Microsoft?s new revolutio... Read more

Now that Microsoft has finally started offering the free Windows 10 upgrade to users across the world, we?re seeing quite a lot of people trying to clean install the new operating system and thus avoid the painful process that the upgrade could turn out to be in case of compatibility issues or any other problems experienced during download and install.

And while the clean install worked for every single version of Windows released in the past, it doesn?t work for Windows 10, so you must not attempt to clean install Windows 10 without upgrading first!

The reason is as simple as it could be: the product keys you have for Windows 7 or 8.1 won?t work in Windows 10 and in order to benefit from the free upgrade, you need to perform the direct upgrade first.

How Windows 10 activation works
Microsoft explains how exactly this process works:

?Once your device upgrades to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer and activates online automatically, an entitlement is registered to your PC?s hardware for your edition of Windows 10. (If you go to Settings >> Update & Security >> Activation says ?Windows is activated?.) Now you will be able to clean install (i.e. boot from media and install Windows 10) the same edition of Windows 10 seamlessly without having to enter a product key.?

In other words, once you perform the direct upgrade to Windows 10 and the operating system is activated, you can perform the clean install how many times you want, as the g... Read more

2.Force a specific visual style file or force Windows Classic ( I have some confusion about this option.I think this is for all users either new or existing, but I don't know how to specify theme pack path.I've tried\\server\share\test.theme
but it doesn't work when I check examples it says that\\server\share\Corp.msstyles and this is quiet confusing for me why is saying to use Corp.msstyles instead of using Corp.theme

A:How Can I setup windows theme via group policy for all Windows 7 Users ?

Hi,

Based on my research, I’m afraid there is no special GPO of setting themes for every user. Just like you said, there is a GPO “Load a specific theme”
only applies to new user, but no effect on an existing user. That’s by design.

Thank you for your understanding.

Probably the best thing to do right now, is download what you need, and throw in an empty drive, disconnect all other drives, and clean install W10, then use your W7 key to activate it once you get to the desktop. Also, skip checking for updates at the beginning of the install, because the servers are being hammered now, and you'll just sit there idle, while nothing happens.

If you must review the failure log, it can be found at
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log

You'll need to show hidden system files to find it, and you'll need to copy it to someplace else in order to open it.

7:40 to go. No time to lose.

Windows Update broken for some Windows 7 users

Several Windows 7 users are reporting that Windows Update is broken, throwing up error 80248015. A detailed thread about the issue is open on Microsoft Answers forum where many have reported the error.

Users are receiving the following message when they try to run Windows Update on machines running Windows 7:

"Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."
Mary Jo Foley from ZDNet reported a different error, " Windows could not search for new updates." However, the point is that there's a problem which the Redmond-based company has to fix at the earliest.

As per Computerworld, the main cause is likely that Microsoft forgot to change the expiration date, which is why users are seeing the errors with Windows Update. A temporary solution is to set the date to something older than March 12, 2017, and run Windows Update.

There's no word from Microsoft about the issue, so Windows 7 users have to wait until the problem is resolved by the company. Microsoft confirmed that Windows 7 will get security updates through mid-January 2020, so we should expect a fix for this issue as there are plenty of users who are still using the operating system.

Windows 7 may be secure, but are Windows users safe?

By Robert McMillan
November 10, 2009 08:40 PM ET

IDG News Service - Windows 7 users got a nice surprise on Tuesday when Microsoft released its first set of security patches since unveiling the new operating system last month. Of the 15 bugs patched, none affected Windows 7.

When Microsoft launched Windows 7, it was billed as the company's most secure release ever -- the culmination of a nine-year "Trustworthy Computing" effort to shore up a product line that had been riddled with major security holes.

But does stress-tested software really matter to Microsoft's customers, seemingly besieged by more online attacks than ever before? Microsoft had years to improve Windows XP, but the Conficker worm, which began spreading last year, is now thought to have infected more than 7 million Windows machines. And for every Windows bug that gets squashed, hackers seem to find new problems in the software that runs on top of Microsoft's operating system -- Flash Player, QuickTime and Java.

"Windows 7 is definitely by far the most secure system they've shipped," said Dave Aitel, chief technology officer with Immunity, a security company that spends a lot of time finding the latest software bugs. "I guess the question that everybody is asking right now is, 'Is this enough?'"

.
No, Windows 7 is not enough. The only security appliance capable of being enough is the user. Security requires awareness.

The AVG icon in my task tray is black and gray.AVG Free 8.5 will not work on Windows ME! It must be an Anti-Virus program that will operate on Windows ME. I can not afford to buy a new computer. This computer does not have enough memory to upgrade the operating system, we already tried that for other reasons.

On my bookshelf lies original, authenticated copy of German Vista Ultimate 64-bit DVD, of course with original key. It?s been there since summer of 2008, I do not even remember why I bought it. It?s useless for me, having Vista DVD`s in English and Finnish.

First one to claim can get it free, I?ll even pay the postage.

Kari

P.S. It?s Ultimate, so with language packs anybody can use it, if you just manage installation in German. Non-German speakers I promise help with installation.

A:German users: Want a free Vista Ultimate 64-bit?

MICROSOFT HAS CONFIRMED that being a Windows 10 Insider does not guarantee a free copy of the operating system.

The company is using the Windows Insider programme as its biggest ever beta test for what is being billed as the final or definitive version of Windows, or Windows-as-a-service.

But Microsoft has made it clear that its generosity stretches only so far, and that being a beta tester is an honour in itself.

Windows 10 will be offered as a free upgrade to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users when it launches later this year.

Windows 8 has reached end of life, and customers will need to take the free upgrade to Windows 8.1 first, which is still subject to holdouts totalling 5.88 percent of the OS market, according to this month's Netmarketshare figures.
