Replacing the Optical drive on Ideapad 310-15ABR 80ST with an SSD

Q: Replacing the Optical drive on Ideapad 310-15ABR 80ST with an SSD

I bought this laptop exactly a year ago and it's starting run quite slow (restart time is 2:30) which is pretty frustrating. It has 1TB HDD which is plenty of space. I have been thinking about replacing my optical drive (which I have never used) with a caddy and SSD to use as the boot drive. I am plan on using Samsung 850 EVO 250GB (SATA III). I have a few questions about the process. Is this storage compatible with the laptop? What SATA port does the optical bay have? (SATA II or SATA III)Would it be better for some reason to swap the HD with the SSD and use the HD with a caddy? Or any other compatibility issues anyone can point out? I just want to make sure I cover all my bases before I go out an buy the SSD and caddy.Caddy I am planing on using

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,I've recently purchased the IdeaPad 320-15ABR. I would prefer an internal Optical Disk Drive, but is proving difficult to work out which one i require / best fit to purchase. Is anyone able to advise on the best internal DVD ROM / RW drive and where to purchase? Would prefer to get an internal rather an external, as it's less to lug about.I've looked in many places but can't work out what is suitable and what is not. I thought it would be easy to source, but was wrong. Help / advice much appreciated. Thanks. First Time Lenovo user, UK based.

I'm trying to replace my DVD drive with an SSHD and can't get it to work. Are there any known limitations on what is supported? I already tried two different adapter cages to put an additional hard drive in the dvd slot. At first I tried a Seagate FireCuda 2TB which is not recognized most of the times. I got it to work one or twice but don't know how. It always was after I suspended and then resumed the laptop, never after a reboot. If I replace the stock SSD with the FireCuda the drive is recognized. But the SSD is not recognized when I connect it to the optical drive connector. I also tried to use an old WD Scorpio Blue 500GB HDD and it works when connected to the optical drive connector. Why is this so complicated? What can I do about it? I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. 22:50 $ dmesg | grep -i ata[ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x000000008d259000-0x000000008d2fefff] ACPI data[ 0.000000] NODE_DATA(0) allocated [mem 0x26eff6000-0x26effafff][ 0.000000] Memory: 7984780K/8302348K available (8452K kernel code, 1293K rwdata, 3976K rodata, 1484K init, 1316K bss, 317568K reserved, 0K cma-reserved)[ 0.156296] ACPI Exception: AE_ALREADY_EXISTS, During name lookup/catalog (20150930/psobject-227)[ 0.171072] _OSC request data:1 1f 0[ 0.193337] ACPI : EC: GPE = 0x50, I/O: command/status = 0x66, data = 0x62[ 0.193611] libata version 3.00 loaded.[ 0.827987] Write protecting the kernel read-only data: 14336k[ 0.881343] ahci 0000:00:17.0: AHCI 0001.0301 32 slots ... Hello, I'm going to be replacing my primary HDD (1tb) with a SSD and will place the HDD in a drive caddy, replacing the existing DVD drive. 3rd party vendors list both 12mm and 9.5mm drive caddys for this - I imagine a newer laptop would have the smaller form factor, unfortunately this spec info is not available from the manual or Lenovo tech support - does anyone happen to know? Might be best if I yank the drive and measure it or take it with me to buy a caddy in person, rather than order online. Thanks for reading,Paul

so, I just got a new laptop, cause the last HP i Had finally broke down. unfortunately it broke down before i could back up anything off the hard drive. So i found the old hard drive from my HP pavillion G7 17' notebook. the hard drive is a toshiba MQ01ABD075. The laptop originally was using windows 7 OS, but i later upgraded it to windows 10. I was wondering if i would be able to use this hard drive in my IdeaPad, without having to re-install windows 7 or 10 from a USB/ windows Disc? would it be easier to just purchase a hard drive adapter and just download everthing i need from the HD?

Hello I've got IdePad 310-15ABR from this link:http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ie/pl/products/laptops-and-netbooks/300-series/310-15abr/80st/80st002kuk... My question is: Is it possible to use empty space of disc drive to add second drive or dvd/bluray drive or not?? I'm talking about space that's normally occupied by dvd drive but I've got model without it so wondering about this thing. It's on the right side of the laptop. Regards, Horacy.

A:ideapad 310-15abr is it possible to add 2nd hdd or dvd drive?

You would have to search to see if their is a adaptor available. I know I have bought a optical slot adaptor for a drive. But that was for a ThinkPad which I think has more options then the consumer line IdealPads. Probably your best bet is a big flash drive, or a external drive. But search third parties because you could possible buy the adaptor and crudely install a drive in the optical. So many optical drives are thin drives these days, so space may be a issues.

I love hp products and my laptop, but... The optical drive has performed poorly since purchase. When I load a DVD, it searches and grinds. Data is retrievable, but video does not play. I can retrieve data from CD-R's, but the drive also makes awful noises and is prohibitively slow. The computer is less than one month old. The drive has never worked acceptably. Before the negative experience I rarely used optical media which leads me to my question: Can I replace the DVDRW DU8A5SH SATA with a Solid State Drive or a combo HDD/SSD? Kind thanks for your thoughts and time.

Hello everyone! I am planning to add a SSD to my HP Pavilion 15-p263nl Notebook PC. I found on some sites that I can remove the optical drive and put a second drive using a caddy adapter into the optical drive bay. I found that some people on the forum have done it successfully, but nothing about my PC model. I want to know if it could work with my product. In other words, there is my plan:1-Remove the actual HDD from the hard drive bay and replace it with the new SSD.2-Remove the optical drive and replace it with the caddy adapter containing my old HDD.3-Do a clean install of Windows 10 on the SSD, using a USB recovery flash drive made with my actual Windows 10 system (which was updated from Windows 8.1 by July 2016). I already have a 120 GB SSD drive from OCZ (OCZ Vertex 3). I have some questions before buying the adapter:1- Will the two drives (my old HDD and the new SSD) be recognized by the motherboard / BIOS and the operating system (Windows 10)? Is there a limit of one unique HDD/SSD drive on the computer?2- which dimensions does the adapter have to be? I found offers for both 9.5mm and 12.7mm that are said to be suitable for HP Pavilion generally speaking3- Do these parts work together and with my computer (size, compatibility)? Do you expect any problem with this upgrade?4- Will the clean install of Windows 10 work, since I plan to install it on a different drive than the one I used to create the USB recovery flash drive? From the Manual: Optical drive Fixed, serial ATA, 9.5-mm tray load You seem to know what you want to do but let me just toss out a couple things you may not have considered. The optical drive port is a lower speed SATA than the hard drive port. So if you put an SSD in there it will be running slower than it can. Also it is not bootable so you would be using an SSD just for storage. You may want to consider just putting a bigger and less expensive mechanical hard drive in there for storage.  The laptop has ports for 2.5 inch SATA hard drives and a SATA-type M.2 disk so you can add a solid state drive that will work way better, just not in the optical bay.  Service Manual Post back if you need any more help.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

So I have an Alienware Sentia m3200. My brother broke the CD part of the laser assembly. I guess I must replace this.

I was looking around the almighty net and although DVDRW drives are listed as different for different laptops they are very often the exact same size and use the exact same IDE connection.

Can I buy any DVDRW drive that is left-mounted, IDE 50, slim and replace the drive cover with my Sentia's?

OK... Here's the situation.

Today, I went onto ebay to find a replacement for my broken slot loading optical drive, and found several with the same model number as mine. One was priced quite low, but the connecting cable differed from mine (most pictured had no cable at all), and I inquired as to whether the cable was removable and could be swapped with my cable. Instead of answering my question, the response was, "This drive WILL NOT work with your laptop."

I do not wish to take my laptop apart needlessly and risk damage (since it is very difficult to get to the drive in my computer), so I'm hoping to get input as to what to look for when replacing the drive. I have a Dell Vostro 2510 laptop with an IDE Sony Optiarc slot-loading optical drive, model number AD-7640A. I didn't look closely to the back of my drive when I removed it, but there is a ribbon cable attached that slides into a connector that latches and holds it in place. Does anyone know if this ribbon cable is likely just plugged into the back of the optical drive, and if all such cables would be? Or do manufacturers ever permanently affix them? So, if I buy a "bare drive" or one with other cable, I could simply remove my cable and attach it to a replacement?

Hi Everyone, My issue is the following: I replaced my optical drive, and insert an additional HDD to my ThinkPad T440p computer using and ODD caddy ICY-BOX AC640. However, the replaced unit seems to blink the activity led for a short time (~1 sec) only when powering on and powering off the machine, and is not detected neither in the BIOS or by the OS.Additionally, the most recent BIOS version (GLET81WW (2.35 )) has only limited settings available compared to the previous versions, so that options regarding the handling of disks is unavailable.I run LinuxMint 17.2. Any hints/helps regarding the topic is welcome.Regards,Marton

I want to replace optical drive with SSD, now I am not sure if its better to replace Optical drive with SSD ot to replace HDD with SSD and Optical drive with HDD. Dont know the difference. Then I want to do clean install of WIn10 on SSD. I bought 128 gb SunDisk SSD. I wanted to buy caddy with these specs:2.5" SATA III HDD/SDD caddy 9.5mm   Size: 125mm*125mm*9.5mm Both SSD and HDD if I checked correctly are 2.5' and SATA. What I dont know is Optical drive SATA aswell. What I am asking if someone can confirm that it will fit and witch option is better (above). And is there any other parameter that I should check out before ordering caddy? Thanks in andvance.

A:SSD caddy replacing optical drive for HP Pavilion 15-au003nm

Here are some things to consider about an optical drive caddy. 1. A drive placed in there will run slower than a drive placed in the main SATA bay. 2. A drive in an optical bay adapter/caddy will not be bootable so will not be able to hold the OS.  So, what you want to do is take that SSD and place it where the hard drive currently is located and then place the old hard drive in the optical caddy. You can still access data on the optical bay drive and transfer is fast enough for video streaming and music but will not be optimal for things like video editing. Just pure raw storage, really. Here is the Service Manual: Manual Hard drive access is on page 32 and optical drive removal is on page 27. The optical drive is 9mm, not 9.5mm and we have had some people report trying to use a 9.5mm bay adapter will not work as it is just a hair too thick to fit inside the laptop. You might find that a 9.5 mm drive adapter will fit, but I cannot guarantee it. It only uses 7mm hard drives but if you happen to have a 9.5 mm form factor hard drive you can (carefully) see if it will fit in the optical bay slot.  Your laptop does have an M.2 mSSD ("gumstick") hard drive slot which would have been a better choice for upgrade. If you can return the 128 gig SSD might not be a bad idea. It only uses the SATA type 2280 M.2 disks with the B + M keys.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hello there,

First off thanks in advance for reading this! I would really appreciate some advice

I have a 17inch Macbook pro i7 laptop.

I was looking at the possibility of replacing the optical drive with a SSD drive (i never really use the optical drive anyways)

I found a place online where one can purchase the SSD drive and case so it fits into where the optical drive is also.

My question is has anybody else done this? and if so is it a good /bad idea?

And also once I replace the optical drive with SSD can I have it so my OS is working off of the new SSD drive and my original 5400rpm HDD will appear up as a separate drive for storage.
Im not sure if its relevant or not but here are the specs of my laptop

Mac osx 10.6.8
2.66 GHZ i7
8gb 1067 MHz DDR3

Thanks!

Good evening, apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, I have looked but didn't find a similar query. I have owned this laptop for 10 months and recently discovered that the optical drive doesn't work.  The device doesn't appear in the BIOS or on Device Manager, but is powered and if I insert a disc it does whir away but is inaccessible.  I've tried using the hardware detection wizard, but that doesn't appear to find anything and I've tried solutions to do with registry editing which also haven't resolved the issue.  Any suggestions would be gratefully received, thanks for taking the time to read!

A:Ideapad 510 15ISK Optical Drive Disappeared

Hi ChrisJR,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Having the optical drive not detected in the BIOS even if the power LED is not would indicate that at the machine level, it does not recognize that there is any optical drive in the system. Initially, the BIOS checks all devices I/O (input/output) as part of POST (power on self test).

Turn off the machine and remove the drive following the steps indicated from the hardware manual here (page 38).
Make sure the contact area is free as you reseat it back to the machine.
Then use the Novo button (item 3 page 58) to power on the machine for launching the BIOS / FN =F2 on restart.
Load BIOS default FN +F9 or choose it from the exit tab then save and exit.
Restart and check if the drive is working.

Else you can try the drive on another machine or to replace it with another known good drive if even cleaning it out (air canned blower / optical drive cleaner).

Hope this help answer your query.
Update us how it goes.

Regards

I have had a Toshiba (holy crap, a terrible laptop build quality), Dell (great CS but the laptop needed a new piece of hardware about every three months. Went through at least 5 MoBos over the course of four years), then finally a Lenovo. The Lenovo was a CHAMP. I brought it everywhere and tortured it within an inch of its life and it stood the test. It stood up to ART SCHOOL, if that is not an indication of quality, I don't know what is. Hence why I bought another. And another. And now this one. I have been surprisingly gentle with this one which is why I am so aggravated by the CONSTANT grinding fan noise. This sucker is less than a year old and still in warranty. This may be fixed by a BiOS thing but considering the type of noise, I am thinking it is hardware. As the battery is sealed, I am hesitant to take this thing apart to check out the fan by hand. So, my question is: Is it possible to get a laptop bought in the USA serviced in Japan? If not, what is the part SKU for the fan so I can just install it myself? Also, a point in the direction of the BiOS/driver/whatever update that is supposed to fix this would be appreciated for the first step. And before you tell me, I know servicing my own laptop will void the warranty. I don't care. I am very good with computers and have been tearing apart and fixing laptops since I got my first one at 13. I would not date doing a fu... Read more

I received my IdeaPad 310-15ABR on December 1st and on December 2nd I called in a ticket and was left a little dissatisfied on the troubleshooting abilities of tech support.  I was experiencing a battery drain faster than I would expect. When unplugged I am getting maybe about 3 hours of use - this is with power saver settings activated and really only web browsing and such. No mega gaming or movies etc So when I called tech, they immedietaly told me to send back the laptop - but at my own expense which to me seems odd, why should I pay to send Lenovo my defective new machine? After getting off the phone I did my own research and found that "location" was on, so I turned it off and that bought me some time on the battery - not a lot... but enough for me to realize that I needed to test this machine out on my own for a week or two before sending it back.  So I am about to send it back, but I am wondering - how long are you getting on your battery for the same machine? I don't want to send it back if what I am getting is unfortunately the reality of what I should be getting.

I want to install an ssd drive in my Ideapad and then replace the dvd player with the original hard drive.  When I received the ssd it came with a frame to use to install it in the dvd player slot.  There is a lot of extra room in the frame, even after installing the drive in it.  It would be very easy to do a mod to the frame to install a usb port.  Is there some way to connect the cable from that usb port to the motherboard - without loosing one of the two usb ports that I have?

I have a new Lenovo Ideapad 310-15abr, Windows 10, 64 bit, AMD with a Radeon 7 graphics card, with a display problem. When I unplug the power (so it's on battery), the screen dims. So I went to Power Options and changed the power plan both on and off battery so the screen is at 100 percent brightness. Didn't work. Tried a Custom Plan and then went back to a High Performance plan. I turned off Adaptive brightness; disabled the Sensor Monitoring service; updated the Graphic Card driver;disabled and then enabled the Graphic Card again. Turned off Lenovo's Power Options called Power Stretch and Conservation mode.  Also updated the AMD VGA driver.  Nothing works. Still dim when on battery. One thing that I have NOT triedit is changing the registry value by using Regedit command and changing the Feature Test Control. I didn't try it for two reasons. One is that I'm not sure what to reset it to (I've seen "ffff" as the setting and something else longer and more complicated). The other reason is that I am too much of a dumbie to be messing with registry values, basically. I've seen this question asked a couple of times, but no very definitive answers. People usually just tell you to change the Power and Sleep settings so the brightness is on 100% when On Battery.  So that answer is not necessary, but ANY OTHER ANSWERS would be welcome!  Thanks -- Ken

Hello!I have one questionIf I keep my laptop connected to the A/C and turn the Conservation Mode on (and get fully charged to the 60%) would the laptop be consuming energy from the battery or from the AC power?I mean, I bought this laptop about 3 months ago (IDEAPAD 310-15ABR) I used to have an HP with a removable battery and since I'm almost always sitted on a desk, I kept the laptop pluged and with no battery (I removed the battery), I wanted to do the same with this one but it doesn't have a removable battery. What I would like to know is if I keep my Lenovo connected and with the coservation mode on, is it ok? would it affect the battery at some point? keeping it pluged when its fully charged means it is working with the AC power and not with the battery power? Thank you! English is not my native language, sorry!

My 4 month old IdeaPad was working fine until yesterday. While watching a TV show the screen went black and now it won't boot up. I get the Lenovo screen followed by a black screen, sometimes with an arrow pointer sometimes not.  I've tried draining the battery and pressing the power button, the only change was after the black screen it went much brighter but then nothing more. Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.

A:310-15ABR Laptop (ideapad) won't boot

On the left side of your laptop, between the combo jack and card reader, there is small button called the NOVO button (see page 6 of this manual)   With the laptop powered completely off, try pressing that button (using the tip of a pen etc.) until the laptop turns on.     If it works as expected, you laptop should load up a menu with the options to run Lenovo OneKey Recovery, enter the BIOS setup utility, or to enter the Boot menu.     If the menu loads, see if you can enter the BIOS setup utility.. and then report back.

If possible, I wish to replace the current 2 cell battery in this used model I bought, as it lasts just 2 hours. What batteries can I look for online or where could I buy ones that can replace the original in this laptop model? 175% (of original) or above capacity would be ideal.Kind Regards, monad

I've had my Windows 10 Ideapad for about a month, and have had no problems with it.  This morning, when I turned it on, I got a message saying the battery needed to be charged and showed it was down to 10%.  I turned it off and plugged it in.  After 5+ hours, it will now not boot up at all.  The little light next to the plug is on and so is the one that is the system status indicator.  Aside from those 2 lights, there is nothing - no light, no sound, nada.  I tried holding the power button down for 30+ seconds - still nothing. Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

So before I go off and bother help and support, I just wanted to ask and see if this is the normal way my computer should be behaving.1) battery: so the battery on this isn't great, i'm usually plugged in and on low power mode just to try to make it though a single college lecture. Even just on a good day 100% to 5% (powersaver) and usiing just word, will only last about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Also, when running anything high demanding and the battery is lower than 40% not plugged in, the computer will always restart and give a kernal error and no other information. Luckily it has not been getting worse, but realistically I can only get 40 minutes of life on high performance out of this thing.2) hard drive: So not a big complaint but It says it has 1Tb hard drive space, but it only ever showed I had 891Gb on C: and 25gb on Lenovo D:not that I mind that much but I did see another complaint who said he got a small compensation when that happened to him. not that this isn't a pricy laptop to begin with and I even feel bad complaining right now when the price was so great.3) touch pad: I might be doing something wrong but these buttons on the bottom of the touch pad are just for show to me. Other than make a loud clicking noise they literally do nothing on terms of input. I just wanted to know if they are actually buttons for the touch pad? or if I'm just insane haha

Hello! My ideapad Ive had for less than 6 months isnt really turning on. I can hot the power button or Novo button and the back light turns on, but it gets stuck at a blank, black screen with a single underscore of white  (Im thinking its stuck at the wall of text that usually starts before the logo). It worked fine yesterday. I was trying to start up a game and it qouldnt load, so I just closed out and reatarted my computer. When it came back up it was just this black screen with the single white underscore. Ive tried to factory reset it every way I know how. I have accepted that Ill likely lose what I have saved and just want my laptop to turn on again. Again, it doesnt get to the logo.
