I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Our Windows 7 users are prompted when their passwords will expire in 14 Days, however They are not forced to change thier password before it expires. If the users ignore the expiration warning they can only get logged into the network after having the helpdesk

Is there a way to force Windows 7 users to change thier passwords on the day it expires. Our WinXP users get the 14 day warning and are forced to change thier passwords on day 14.
I have the GPO configured to notifiy users when thier passwords will expire in 14 days

A:Windows 7 Expired Password - Recvd Warning prompts but not forced to change password

Hi,

After applying above settings, the user can change the password by default at the expire day. Please create a new domain profile and test the issue on several Windows
7 machines. Can the user be enforced to change password at expire day? If not, please refer to the following steps to collect the information for research.

1. On the DC, open GPMC, right-click Group Policy Results, choose Group Policy Results Wizard, follow the wizard to collect a Group Policy result for problematic
Windows 7 client.

2. On the Windows 7 machine where GPO failed to apply, please perform the following steps to collect log files:

a) Please add the specified registry key to enable group policy log (%windir%\debug\usermode\gpsvc.log), and remove or rename it to disable group policy log after
collecting data. You may need to create the Diagnostics key if it is not there.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Diagnostics

Type: DWORD

Value: GPSvcDebugLevel

Data: 0x30002 (hexadecimal)

b) Then on the problematic Win7 machine, run command “gpupdate /force”.

c) Then on the problematic Win7 machine, run command “gpresult /v > gpr_win7.txt”, send me gpr_win7.txt file.

d) On the problematic Win7 machine, run command “eventvwr”, then expand to Applications and service logs -> Microsoft -> windows -> groupPolicy
-> Operational. Right-click on it and ... Read more

Hello, so I've just found an old laptop I've had hoarded with windows 8 on it. Everything on it is super outdated, and I noticed it had my account on it which was basically my Microsoft account. I tried to sign in, but it says it's incorrect. I know my
password, and I've changed it over the years, but since the laptop is so old, it wants me to put in the last password I used to sign in on it. Problem is that I had so any password changed and I cannot remember what password I used. It will not let me use
my new password, because it says it's incorrect. Any way to fix this?

So, I installed Windows 10 last week. Yesterday I explored a bit and discovered Windows Edge, their new email/ outlook client. I attached my personal Gmail address to the service as well as my corporate address. My corporate account required me to create a new password that fit my company's security standards, which I did, but, after feeling like my company address was restricting how I use my personal home computer, I removed that address. Here's where I get fuzzy, I cannot, for the life of me remember, if I changed my password back to one that didn't conform to my company's security standards or if I left it alone. All I know is that once my computer locked later that night, I was unable to get back in. I've tried every permutation of every password, including that corporate password, I've ever used with no success.

I do not have a password reset disk nor do I have a system repair disk with which to reinstall Windows 10.

So, how screwed am I? Will I have to reinstall Windows 7, the last OS I have a disk for, and hope I can reupgrade to Windows 10?

P.S.
I did not attach my MSN email address (aka my Microsoft Account) to my computer, so resetting my password that way is a no go.

Hi,

I recently suffered a trojan virus attach and ultimately have changed my password on my email server.

I have tried to reset it to the new password in Windows mail multiple times. It keeps reverting to the old password as the saved password, and I continually have to retype in the new password. I tried resetting the password to nothing, and rebooting, and the old password comes back again.

There must be a preference file or an ini file that I can edit. Can I do that without loosing my address book, etc.?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Daria

A:Trouble resetting password in Windows Mail to new server password

You might try clicking "Apply" before "OK" in the same window that you entered the password. (I'm guessing that since you are using Windows 7, your email program is Windows Live Mail, not Vista's Windows Mail, although the procedure would be the same anyway.)

This computer was set up about a year ago with sharing enabled. It worked perfectly the entire time.
Then a few weeks ago, it started prompting for a password. I've been racking my brain out since. Unfortunately, I let too much time pass before realizing I could roll back using System Restore so now I'm screwed. My best guess is that a security update caused this problem. I unstalled all the security updates in Jan (except the .NET 4 updates which I figured aren't the cause).
Here's my setup:
Windows 7 Home Premium on 5 computers
No HomeGroup
No passwords for any computer on the network
Sharing for each computer works fine except on this desktop. The desktop can access everything else but no one can access it
Printers are shared by the desktop and are no longer accessible
Network Sharing Center: Password protected sharing: Off (Tried On also)
Let Windows/Homegroup manage: On (Tried Off also)
Firewall completely disabled on desktop
The following registry settings have also be changed to no effect (in HKLM/Control/CurrentControlSet/Lsa)
forceguest: 0
LimitBlankPasswordUse: 0
LmCompatibilityLevel: 1
everyoneincludesanonymous: 1
restrictanonymous: 0
restrictanonymoussam: 0
Passwords are not required to login
Why is this not working? This is starting to royally irritate me. I've never had this problem before, and I've never used anything but blank passwords.

A:Windows 7 stopped sharing with no password / blank password

This is the first time this problem has happened. Just ran AVG scan and it came back as no threats. Is this just an 8.1 glitch or do I have a virus problem ? Another strange thing that happened recently just before my windows 7 died was I couldn't type my windows password into the password space, couldn't see any cursor, but if I took the pc downstairs to the main floor I finally found it worked just fine downstairs but if I took the pc back upstairs I couldn't type in a pass word again, to fix the problem I just removed the password window but the windows died right after that. but thats one for the books !!

I found that once I upgraded to Windows 8.1 I had to use my Email account to Log In to my PC.
The User has to have a Windows Account (Mine is originally Hotmail - Live - Outlook).

I can not stand having the same Password and account info from my Email account the same as my PC.

I had to reinstall Windows 8 and then I was able to use a Personalized & Custom User Name & PC Password.

*This coincides with certain software I use when I install the same titles on multiple PCs. *(Serif - WebPlusX6 - I use a common User Name and file location).

***I will not tolerate having to be constricted to a Windows Account that makes me use the same password and user name for my Email Account and my PC.

*****Therefor, WINDOWS 8.1 is useless to me at this time.

P.S. I still get rapid boot times and custom features from Windows 8. *I assigned the Power Button where the old *Start button would be & pinned shortcuts to my task bar to navigate to apps I use frequently.

A:Seperate Windows Account, Email Password From PC Password

Hello Majestone, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You can sign in to Windows 8 with any "local account" or "Microsoft account" you want.

You do not have to setup a "Microsoft account" when installing or setting up Windows 8.1. A trick to this would be to temporarily disconnect the internet when you get to this point to then be able to setup a "Local account" instead.

If you want a Microsoft account, then you could have two Microsoft accounts, and use one to sign in to Windows 8 with and the other for your emails.

Either way, you could easily switch to a local account afterwards.
Local Account - Switch to in Windows 8
...or switch back to any Microsoft account you wanted instead.
Microsoft Account - Switch to in Windows 8
Hope this helps,
Shawn

I have a user that has a Windows XP laptop that travels. She connects to our office via PPTP. She has two different passwords. One for the domain and one for the firewall VPN connection. If she gets on the internet and connects to the VPN it connects fine. Shortly after however, she gets locked out in Active Directory. When she re-boots and logs back in the only password that will work is her VPN password. It stays that way until she connects directly to the domain, either from our corporate office or one of our remote offices. The problem that this causes is when she is in outlook, outlook keeps trying to use the password she got into the computer with, which is the VPN password, and it fails enough times to lock her out. I know that I can match the two passwords to be the same but when her domain password expires we would have to change the firewall one as well. We're trying to avoid this and I'm expecting this to happen with more people. Any ideas?

A:PPTP password replaces the Windows password

Can the firewall be set to use Windows authentication? RADIUS may work, but if you don't already have a server for that, you would need one.

Hello there

So I'm experiencing strange BitLocker behaviour. I have this PC at work. Clean Windows 8 x64 installation, 3 HDD (AHCI), no SSD.

After I set up BitLocker to encrypt "C" partition, it gave me pop-up window, that I should restart PC to test the BitLocker loader. So I clicked Yes. And after few seconds I got this:

JPG IMAGE - http://www.eightforums.com/attachments/f1/f2/22871d1370880908t-very-strange-bitlocker-enter-password-startup-screen-5jkippr.jpg

Mind, I'm still ABLE TO type password (i can't see sh** though), after I hit enter Windows IS booting, but it's really weird to see above picture instead of:

My GFX is OK, I tested it with games, benchmarks etc.
BitLocker simply cannot, for whatever reason, use my video card properly and displays those weird lines. After all - it hasn't loaded the whole Windows yet. Than again, it IS a bit strange, as Windows installers tend to work fine.

Any thoughts people?

Kind Regards

Bart

My son's HP laptop was giving him a strange message that he must pay $300 to the FBI and then would go to a black screen. I guessed that he had gotten a virus. A few days later I tried to get into safe mode to do a system restore, but all 3 options of safe mode take me to the windows login screen, and his password no longer works. Also, in looking for answers, I found others who were having the pc hang while loading classpnp. I did notice that this is also occurring just before it goes to the windows login screen.

Many of the suggestions I have found for fixing errors require you to either be logged in or in safe mode, which is not possible. My son's father bought him the laptop, so I don't know if there was ever an installation disk. I believe it came with windows 7 pre-installed. It was purchased new about a year ago. My son does not want me to wipe the hard drive or do anything to lose his music, games, etc., but I don't know if that is possible

At first I thought I just needed to know how to reset the windows password, but at this point, I think the problem is beyond my capability to figure out on my own.

Has anyone else heard of a similar issue and how to repair it with or without losing all of the data?

Problem would be clearer with correct terminology:
Windows Mail is the email client which came with Windows Vista.
Windows Live Mail is an email client that you download with Windows Live Essentials.
"Windows Live" is too general to tell what you're referring to.

When I try to connect to a Windows 2000 computer (SERVER) over my network from my Windows 7 computer (LAUREL-PC), I have an issue in that a dialog box comes up called Enter Network Password, and when I do enter the password and username for my windows 2000 computer into the dialog box, it doesn't work, and it says incorrect username or password!

I think it has to do something with the fact that when I try and login, it shows the username as

LAUREL-PC\Connor

when it should probably be

SERVER\Connor

because I am logging in with the username from the computer called SERVER, not LAUREL-PC! There isn't even an account called Connor on LAUREL-PC.

How do i make it change the domain or computer name to SERVER when I am logging on, or is there some other problem. I tried to make it so that you don't have to enter a network password to access shares on my SERVER computer, but that didn't work. Is there anyway to disable this dialog box?

Thanks!!!

I have a Dell laptop, where I changed the password back in February. Just to be clear, the password screen I am referring to is the screen, which follows the black screen with the Dell logo, that is colored and has a square image (which can be replaced by the admin) next to the spot to input the admin password to unlock windows/the computer. I was able to successfully login to the computer with the new password several times after the change. Unfortunately around the same time I created the new password, a person I trusted (at the time) knew the new password when I changed it. Shortly thereafter, the situation with that person turned badly and we cut ties with her. We suspect (because it happened right before that person left), she changed the password out of spite. Since then we have been unable to gain access to that laptop. The laptop runs on Windows 8 (or 8.1, not entirely sure) operating system. We have an Asus that has an option to recover (or reset) the password through various means (an email code, phone text message code, etc), as a safe-guard. However, the Dell only has the option to reset the password by inserting a flash drive. We tried this and did not have any luck. I am desperate to gain access to the Dell laptop as it has valuable photos and important documents on it. Please, PLEASE, help me with this.

Since you can't remember how you removed the password, we can't tell you what affect it will have on the Windows 10 upgrade. What I would do if it were my computer:

Create a new LOCAL user account:
User Account - Add a New User in Windows 8

make sure to change the new local user account to administrator type. Make sure to log on to the new local user account. Then do the upgrade to Windows 10. That way you will ensure that you have an account you can log in to on Windows 10, and if your usual account stays active the way that you want it to, you can just delete the new local user account you created.

Not sure if this is question is allowed on this web site or not, but I will ask & see what response I get. I don't want to get kicked off here, so please, if it is against the Tech Guy rules, please just let me know & I will withdraw my inquiry.

I just got a new computer & on my old pc I want to find my password files that Windows saves for me. I have no idea where they might be stored. I am running Windows XP.

So, can anyone tell me where I might find where windows stores them on my pc, so I can find the file & print out all my saved passwords before I change over???

Thanks ---

Windows Update has changed my password, and now I can't open windows. This is really strange. I only did a regular shut down after installing updates, and when I restarted several hours later I am locked out.

Help. please.

Enable the hidden Administrator account and use it to revert the password. I assume you have tried "blank" passwords, etc?

I Googled "Lost Windows Password," and of there are a lot programs available but I don't know which ones are any good. Thanks in advance.

My computer when I turn it on asks for a PIN to get into windows which I never set up so have no clue what the PIN is and this has rendered my computer unusable, anyone else having same issue or  can point me in right direction to get into my computer
I do have access to other computers so can go Online to get answers if needed.

Hi,
It's impossible there is pin code asked if you don't set it.
Did you see the logon screen as below?

If yes, click another Sign-in options as below:

I have an older Acer Laptop that I haven't used for several years. When you try to boot, it has a dropdown asking for the password. As for as I can remember, it never had a password. How can I fix this even if it had one and I just don't remember. Can anyone help me? BTW, I don't remember the OS either. Forgive me for all the I don't remember stuff, but I am fixing to be 75 years old.

I would have downloaded the above, but my concern is not with this PC. I have an Windows XP HP. It has a password box that opens when windows opens. Is it possible to get around this to save the info on the machine? Can you help with this issue? roc

A:getting around windows password; Is it possible?

Not on this site. Read the rules.

But you can access your files and recover them with a bootable OS CD, like:

*******************************************
Parted Magic disk partitoning tool (Bootable CD image)
If you prefer a bootable USB key, download and run Linux Live USB Creator. Choose the Parted Magic distro, and it will download it and automatically create a bootable USB key.

This CD (or key) contains many useful tools. You can partition, recover files, recover lost partitions, make disk images (by several different methods), transfer files between media, scan for viruses (It can serve as an Alternative Trusted Platform for search and elimination of rootkits and bootkits), examine and benchmark hardware, access the internet, and much more.
*******************************************

With that, I don't think there is much more that can be discussed within the rules, so I'm closing this thread.

I was asked to look into a password tool for worst case scenarios " Windows Password Key Professional".  Has anyone come across this program?  If so/not, what are some viable legit options?

No need to pay when you can do it for free.

I reformatted my computer six days ago and made an error in judgment. I live by myself in a house with good locks in a neighborhood that is crime-free. Stupidly I put in a password for opening Windows 7 (Home Premium). If somebody is going to break in here, I'll lose a lot more than encrypted business files, unencrypted other files, software, and the computer. Is there a way, other than reformatting, which is out of the question, that I can change that to no password. I won't forget it and its hidden in a book in the basement should I forget it, but it's really an unnecessary step.

Thanks,

Gerry

I'm a little confused. If you have your current password, and want to change it to no password...
Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then click Change a password.
Is this what you are asking?
