SQL Server ODBC Connection Mysterious Fails

Q: SQL Server ODBC Connection Mysterious Fails

We are moving an old Access project from XP too Windows 7 32 and .Net.

However there is something wrong with Windows 7! When I try and create an ODBC link via ODBC Administrator to allow the software to access data tables on SQL Server on the Windows 2003 Server it just keeps producing a message saying the TCP/IP port does not exist or access is denied.

Having tried the same experiment with an XP computer it worked fine, no issues, but Windows 7 strangely doesn't???

The SQL Server is on standard port 1433, I tried turning the firewall off in Windows 7 but that made no difference, when installing Windows 7 and connecting it too the network it complained it needed a DNS address so I put one on the server and set that in the Windows 7 client.

The XP client never needed one, could that be linked to this odd issue?

My first experience of Windows 7 this is and it seems like Microsoft have struck again by taking something that works and making it unnecessarily difficult...

Of course I could be wrong

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am trying to connect to a mysql DB using the perl API.

The connect command looks like this:

It produces the error:

I'v done hours of rummaging around the web to find a solution but to now avail.

In desperation I executed the following "find" command:

By using a combination of the information at

I managed to get DBD working instead of ODBC. That is sufficient for me.
I did the above with one difference. I used a later version of the latest non-beta DBD module.

I have a server running linux with Apache and MySQL. now I am trying to create an ODBC link through my XP machine. I have installed the ODBC driver and everything.

i am trying to create a system DSN connector. At the stage where it asks me about servername password, user, etc... I just cant figure out what to type in server. Should it be the IP address or anything else behind it. Because when I used the IP it says

[MySQL][ODBC 3.51 Driver]#HY000Host '88-106-153-88.dynamic.dsl.as9105.com' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server

any ideas? Thanks

A:Connecting through ODBC from Win XP to Linux MySQL Server

Well all I know about is MS SQL server and its on the domain but I usually use this type of method -

With linux I would think you should just need to type in the machine name.

Also with this setup is this all local or is this across the internet?

I've developed a site www.kitkrazy.com using PHP, Access and an ODBC connection. It works very well ... most of the time.

Every now and again -- say every three months -- the site crashes, and I get the error message ...

Warning: SQL error: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Too many client tasks.,

Most recently I got ...

Warning: SQL error: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] System resource exceeded., SQL state S1001 in SQLExecDirect in E:\home\Default\kitkrazy.com\htdocs\include\topthree.php on line 15
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] System resource exceeded.

When I challenge the hosting company on this they always advise me to use a DSN-less connection. Well, it's got to the point where I'm thinking to myself, why don't I just go DSN-less and the hell with it.

So I took a look. And it seems that I'm going to have to rewrite all my SQL queries and database calls. Unless you know different ...

Is there a simple way to convert all my code from ODBC to DSN-less?

A:PHP: Converting from ODBC to DSN-less connection

You should probably convert to MySQL or a real database if you are having trouble with too many users accessing the database. You may also want to check all of your code to see that it is clean and you are closing all open object when the program is done with them. You will have the exact same problem with with a DSN-less connection and it will actually slow your site down. Rewriting the connection string is the only change you will need to make and if you use an include file for the DB connection string all you need to do is change one file.

I'm running 2005 SQL server on Windows 2008 server. I have both Windows 7 and XP ODBC connections to the server. Everything was working fine but the server was running slow so I tried a windows update. The update made my ODBC connection go flakey, but only on Windows 7. Testing the connection would be successful, for several tests, then fail and you would have to reboot the workstation. I have both SQL server and Native Client. Now I am unable to create a connection with either. I've uninstalled the updates which hasn't helped. It seems like the update changed a security setting somewhere. Creating a new connection now fails with SQL state 08001 and server error 10060

I have the system working now with both Win 7 and XP Pro but not really happy with the fix. The SQL passwords seem to be stored in a different encryption for these 2 OS's If I change the password on the SQL server then let Win 7 rebuild it the system works ,, but you can't use that login on XP Pro without doing the same thing over again.

I'm not sure if i'm posting this in the correct area, but please let me know and I will move to appropriate forum.

I have a application I use that connects to a default ODBC connection "Connection1" which is the production enviroment. I want to create a shortcut on my desktop to point to the TEST enviroment so I don't have to go through and change odbc settings all the time. I added a SQL Server connection under System DSN "Connection2" which point to test database. In the shortcut properties I added to the end of the Target location "-oConnection2" so it looks like this:

C:\programfiles\app\app.exe -o"Connection2"

I saw this setup at another location and trying to set it up on my workstation. I know it's something simple i'm missing. Any help or direction would be great.

I have two laptops at my company that have Windows 7 Home - thus cannot login to AD/Domain as a specific user. They in-turn use a local administrative account setup on those laptops. We have a database setup with linked connections to our SQL Server 2005.

Whenever we're trying to access those linked tables we get the following error message:
We can bypass this issue by manually typing in the Login/Password within this error prompt.
What's strange is that we have ODBC setup to use the SQL Server Authentication:
That SHOULD allow us to not use Windows Authentication (as you can see it's trying to use the 'Guest' account on Windows 7. I've tried making this change through both x32 and x64 versions of ODBC (located in wow64). I've searched all over the internet concerning this issue but no one seems to have anything similar. This used to work a few weeks ago and I don't know of anything we changed other than a few system updates.

The SQL Server's Security is setup to use both authentication methods:
Our SQL Server gives us an Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11
A quick Google search explains that State 11 means, "Valid login but server access failure".

Any help please? The only solution I have right now is to install W7 Pro...

A:Access & ODBC connection issue on W7 Home, State 11

Sound like a Windows permissions issue to see the SQL server.

You could also map a network drive using other credentials. This will authenticate the computer onto the domain.

I have an XP Pro PC at home running IIS 5.1. I've applied IISLOCKD.EXE as well as four other IIS updates from Microsoft. In addition to Port 80, I have Ports 21, 5902 and 23586-23590 being forwarded to this PC (the additional ports are for other servers that were once installed, but have been uninstalled pending the resolution of my problem). There are no other programs installed on this PC, besides Symantec AV 9, Ad-Aware SE, SpyBot S&D and HijackThis.

I keep getting attacked by something that will attempt to download a file containing a Downloader virus of some sort (sorry, I can't recall the specific name at the moment) using FTP.EXE. Originally, it attempted to download virus-laden JPG files ... now it attempts to download a non-descript file with just the letter "o" for the entire filename. Symantec AV 9 always successfully captures the virus file and deletes it.

It also starts CMD.EXE and runs it in the background. To make matters worse, it will prevent me from accessing the shared files/folders/printers on that PC (though after a reboot, I can access them again). I also noticed it creates new NTUSER.DAT and NTUSER.DAT.LOG files in %SystemRoot%\system32\config\systemprofile, though these files are 0KB. Lastly, I've noticed an inordinate number of RUNDLL32.EXE prefetch files, as well as prefetch files for MMC.EXE and a few others.

Some time ago i noticed certain programs were failing in very strange ways, but i'm not sure if they were connected. The main example was firefox - whenever i open a copy of firefox (i copied it for testing purposes) from anywhere other than from My Documents of another user, it immediately appears with the message "Could not connect because the connection was actively refused". This is clearly false since when running a copy of the right account it works fine. Internet Explorer also seems to have failed (not to worry though, just another point).
The second main point is multiplayer games. I have Steam and run games off it. The strange thing is, games such as Team Fortress 2 and Garry's Mod work fine (note these programs were paid for - you'll see where i'm coming from), whereas mods such as Zombie Panic! Source or Eternal Silence fail. ZPS comes up with no specific error but instead shows "refreshing server list..." indefinitely (interestingly, the first time i ran ZPS, after closing it showed a dialog screen of Windows Firewall saying it has blocked hl2.exe - the main game executable - and asks what to do next. Clicking unblock, however, had no effect the next time i tried it). Eternal Silence, another, more recent mod, states that it "could not contact master server" - a similar problem.

Recently, I noticed my computer being connected to another wireless network connection that has appeared in my list of network connections, other than the one it is set up to connect to. My computer uses a network connection, where I have to enter a key, to access the network. I don't allow the computer to connect to the network, automatically, so I have to enter the key each day. It's name is BlueOak. There is also a guest connection on my router, named Guest BlueOak, which also needs a password to connect. The new connection that has appeared is called, BlueOak2. How I know that this connection is present is when I start up my computer, it automatically connects to the network, without my having to enter the key. When I check my list of available connections, BlueOak is gone and BlueOak2 is in it's place. If I disconnect the connection, after about 30 seconds, the BlueOak2 connection disappears out of the list and BlueOak reappears. Then I can enter my key, to connect. After about two days, the BlueOak2 connection reappears. I've done scans for viruses and malware, even in safe mode and only found: Trojan.Host ( Trojan.Agent - Safe Mode ) that keeps coming back. Creates a Host file in C:/Windows/Host. I opened it with EditPadPro and saw that it contained a list of sites that are blocked by SpyBot. MalawareBytes is the only program that finds this. Anyone have any ideas??: For two months, the two computers we use have not been able to successfully access the internet. At first, they would connect and work fine about half the time. Gradually, we began experiencing more and more problems. When we would connect, we would only be online for a few minutes and then get kicked off. It has now gotten to the point where we cannot connect at all. Our modems dial and the connection sound just keeps buzzing.

We are using two different computers in the same room that are not networked in any way. Our ISP is AOL . One computer has Windows ME and uses AOL 8.0, the other has Windows 98 and uses AOL 7.0. When the internet used to work, it would work on both computers. When it malfunctions, it also does so on both computers at the same time. This led us to believe it was not a modem or software problem because it was too coincidental that the exact same thing would happen to two unrelated, unconnected computers simultaneously.

We have tried the following troubleshooting techniques on both computers with no success:
- Different access numbers. We have tried all the AOL access numbers within the region (847), as well as neighboring area codes (773).

For the last week or so I've been having persistent BSOD issues. Its fairly sporadic, I had only one yesterday in about 10 hours of using the PC, but 4 this morning in the space of about 3 hours. Okay, I've had this issue for a while and I'm going to try and explain everything I can recall about it, but please feel free to request any relevant information that I may have missed out.

The issue is the following: At some point for some reason, my PC loses the ability to establish NEW internet connections. Ping requests time out, pages don't load, etc. HOWEVER, existing connections remain unaffected. I can remain signed in to Steam friends, Mumble, etc. However if I disconnect from said Mumble server, I will not be able to reconnect whilst this issue is in effect.

I have had the issue occur spontaneously, but that's rare, and that's only ever happened when using a wireless adapter, not when using the ethernet cable. I believe this may be related to the fact that it can also be triggered if I switch the router off for an extended period, so my wireless card loses its connection. Then, if I switch it back on, the issue will happen.

I can also trigger the issue by hibernating my PC and then restoring it from hibernation.

The problem does NOT appear to be adapter specific. I have experienced it using an ethernet cable to connect to the router, as well as a USB wireless dongle rather than using my wireless card.

In addition other Windows 7 machines (two laptops) in this house are not affected by this issue, the problem is unique to my PC.

Disabling and re-enabling the adapter can temporarilly fix it, but disconnecting and reconnecting does not. If the issue occurs,... Read more

And, I'm away from home right now (I'll be home in a couple of hours) so I'm writing this from my phone = can't really do some research. I'll do it when I get home. Just some quick suggestions before the little research: Download thr latest updates and drivers to your computer. I think the problem lies in either the firmware of the adaptor or a component broken in the adaptor. Can't give more help right now, but I'll try my best when I get home!

Hi. I am a new member and not really sure whether this post belongs here in the Windows 7 forum or in the Am I Infected forum.  I have a desktop PC running Windows 7 and I am using ESET Smart Security for my antivirus & firewall.  Starting within the last week or so, I have been getting firewall popups about an attempted outgoing connection.  The popups tell me the application attempting to connect is "System" and that it is always attempting to connect to the same external address ( using the GRE & ESP protocol. I haven't installed any new software in the last week with the exception of running Windows Update.  I tried to do some research about these protocols but all I could understand was that they are some type of tunneling protocols usually involving VPN connections.  I've also tried a few methods for monitoring/showing my internet connections to see if I could determine what is trying to make a connection but I haven't had any success. Any ideas what could be causing this?  Or ideas on how I can track down the source of these attempted connections?  I know I can create a permanent rule to block these connections and then wait and see if that seems to cause any problems but I thought I might try to get a better understanding of what is behind it first. Thanks.Edit: Topic moved from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

My internet connection is generally alright, but when I try to play multiplayer games (Half Life shooters, etc.) I get lag. I know it isn't a hardware problem, because Half Life lags and my computer can handle that easily. I've done ping tests. My ping sucks (over 300ms) but I have no idea why.

Since this problem started over a year ago I have:

1. Bought a new ethernet card.
2. Reformatted and installed a new OS.
3. Moved and switched DSL service.

I'm baffled as to what the problem could be, it seems as if it must be some sort of hardware problem?

A:Mysterious lag (high ping) with my internet connection

Here are a few general troubleshooting ideas.

1) are you behind a router? If so have you tried bypassing it?

2) Have you tried pinging non-game sites like www.yahoo.com? If so whats your ping there?

3) Have you tried to do a tracert to the servers to see where you are bogging down? If you are good to your gateway and die 7 hops out then there is probably not much you can do other than report it to your isp and see if they can contact the owner of the bad router. If the bad ping is between your system and the gateway its either your system or your ISP.

Hi Forum!
Thanks in advance for anyone even reading this.

I am living at my Graduate school in NYC who provides free wifi. The service is good overall, usually about 15-20mbps symmetric. Although torrents are blocked (for downloading linux distros, obviously) I get by by tunnelling into my home pc if necessary.

The problem is, most of my web surfing is incredibly slow to load. If I ever try to load two pages at once, both usually will give me a 404 error. Direct downloads, blazing fast. But a web page with ads in it brings the network connection to its knees. Many times I will click a link, get "looking up" in the progress bar, and MAYBE it will load. I do surf all night after work, just with much frustration. WoW plays with no lag as well. I've tried everything:

With and without firewalls, different browsers, different network adapters, OpenDNS etc, all to no avail.

Interesting facts: When streaming video from anywhere (Hulu, Youtub, etc) my network connection widget spikes predictably 0.0 to top spead, ever refresh period.

Pinging? Pings always lose 3 out of 4 packets at least.

Also, it is very temperamental. Some moments, http is crazy fast, instant loads. Other times, unusable. There has been no one here this summer so can't blame it on traffic. I am only sharing an Access Point with 2 other people who are not saavy enough to tax the connection.

Here are some system specs

Hi there.
I have just switched to use another FTP server program after a long line of problems on other severs which don't work!!

NTG(Yes, the NTG on here), has a 26gb (aprox.) backup to upload to my system every night, done from a batch command program.

This kicks out randomly every night. - And I just can't work out why - and thats about all I know!

I have checked with him that his ISP isn't capping anything, and I know mine isn't.

Any advise would be much appreciated.
p.s, I will just add, It works fine on every other client that uses it! (Needless to say, however, they arn't really quite as big as NTG's)

A:FTP Server Upload fails

Just to correct you on the matter, one backup does not =26 gb. The biggest upload is my sister's large backup which is 2gb. Mine only is about 40mb, my dad is a little over 100 and mom is around 500. Me and my dad's uploads transfer fine but for whatever reason the system stalls out on my sisters and mom's backups. As for the batch, i use rar.exe (the commandline version of winrar) to make password protected backups which are pooled from backups made onto a nas from the client pcs utilizing another batch. It pools them and saves them with a rule to split the archive every 100 megabytes. After creating the rar files the system then begins uploading them. At first had them going all at once but currently we are testing having it send each batch one at a time. However, we still cannot understand why it would just kill the connection for no reason. I highly doubt my isp is up to anything as i conferred with a family member who works for the isp on the issue and he said that they do not throttle bandwidth. I know the original call was big but i have since cut down the size i need by only having the batch grab critical data as the backup is meant as disaster recovery.

It is wired that I cannot put IE 11 on my system. The system has default IE8. And IE 11 is offered from WU so it should be applicable to my system. Recently I pushed all pending updates (Security and Non-Security) of last 2 years. 23 updates were detected by Client. When installed it said 17 Succeed

However when I verify the from 'Add or Remove' I don't even see a single update installed. But my main concern is this, Bluescreen error started showing since the time it has re-booted Post to Patching.
Window Update log also says Updates are installed.
Any Idea where else can I check the reason of these blue screen?

I am facing problem making Jetway TV PCI Tuner 878 work under Windows 2000 Server.

It worked well under Windows 98 SE, but doesn't scan any channel under Windows 2000 Server. There was no problem or error during driver installation under Windows 2000 Server. Tv Tuner Application starts without error but fails to scan channel. But sometime on very rare occation it scans some channel successfully (it happened only twice). It does scans all available FM channels successfully.

Do I need to allocate the TV-Tuner application more RAM and Priority, if so how do I do that? I have not altered any setting of Win2K server (it is with its default settings and configuration). I checked everything about resource settings - there is no conflict of any type.
TV-Tuner driver is:
BtTuner, Philips WDM TvTuner
by Conexant
File version:-

According to its manual it sould work under Windows 2000.

I did visited Jetway (www.jetway.com.tw) for driver update, there was none (same win2k driver is still listed). I even shot a number of email to their technical support team, but until today didn't received any reply. May be Jetway Company Collapsed or they have in-efficient technical support team.

A:typeperf command with remote server option fails

Hi Sam,

I would like to know what your Windows 7 model is. 32-bit or 64-bit? What is your remote server model?

If you are running 32-bit OS on locally, please make sure your remote server is the same model. If your remote server is 64-bit OS, you may need 64-bit version of
typerperf at C:\Windows\SysWOW64

Also, try the double '%%', for example:

typeperf "\\<remote-IP>\Process(*)\%%
Processor Time" -sc 1

Hey guys,

Just after some advice. I'm setting up a personal SSH server following this guide:

Geek to Live: Set up a personal, home SSH server

I'm up to the step where I connect to the server. The only step that I've skipped is changing the protocol from 1,2 to 2 because I couldn't find it. But I doubt that makes a difference to my setup?

Anyway the error when I type in the final command: ssh <> -1 Rya it comes up with:

-bash: No such file or directory.

My Default Gateway IP is and the IPv4 address is (which was the one that worked when I forwarded port 22 in my router). Neither of these IPs work when I interchange them in the command.

Any insight into my problem is much appreciated. Hope to hear back from some more knowledgeable in this field.

A:Cygwin fails to read directory - setting up SSH Server

I dont know a lot about cygwin, but it sounds like it can find the home directory or default directory.

You dont have to use cygwin to create an ssh server. i use freesshd Its very easy to setup and use. Plus your not using linux command you can use windows command and you're actually in your windows folders.

I select to install everything, but the installation of database services fail, and I can't find the log file I am requested to inspect.

I am trying this on a "clean" windows 7 installation - Visual studio has not been installed yet.

Home network 2 PCs running Windows 7. Cable modem and Dlink ethernet switch. Protected by Norton 360. Using IE 8 (Previously upgraded to IE9 but uninstalled as thought this may have been cause of problem)
One PC works fine
Other PC can access internet by entering address and can acess email. However if try web search (eg using bing) it cannot connect - error message Windows cant connect with Primary DNS server. Troubleshooter suggests restarting modem etc. This does not make any difference.

Have tried to follow advice shown in various on-line discussions but unable to resolve.

Perhaps this is just some incorrect setting that causes blockage?

A:Windows cant communicate with Primary DNS server - search engine fails

Check that the settings for the network interface card are set to automatic as detailed here:
Change TCP/IP settings

Then - just for fun - uninstall Norton 360. Perhaps some setting got barfed in that 360 tool You might try Microsoft Security Essentials as a free alternative.
