Preferred Solution: folder exists in desktop but cannot see

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've messed up a bit and need some help. I was trying to create a folder to back-up Contacts in Outlook 97. I seem to have deleted something crucial because when I go into Outlook and click on Contacts (or Calendar, Journal etc - any of them) I get a message "Unable to display folder. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all of Office but I still get the same message. Help please.

Dear Tech Support Guy,

I have searched the internet and while I have found problems related to this, I had a hard time finding the exact same problem or a solution.

I installed a legitimate program which allows me to generate custom maps for a game I have Europa Universalis III. As you can see, there are three folders in the "Map Generator" folder.
However when I open the program and attempt to load a map I am able to view a folder which I can't view in Windows Explorer
I am able to use the program to load files from this invisible folder. It is very worrisome that I have a folder on my computer that Windows explorer will not show me. I am administrator and have set myself as the owner of the root folder and the "Saved" folder in question. Under properties->Security I am listed as having all access except "special permissions" which I can't select. Under permissions I am listed as having "Full Control".

Under the "Auditing" tab it states it is unable to display the current owner. When I attempt to take ownership I get the following error.
I assume this folder exists, how can I view it in Windows Explorer? I would like access to the files.
On another note how do I ensure that this doesn't happen again? Why does windows allow files to be stored on my computer but not make them visible even to an admin? How would I detect and delete such a folder? This folder conatins ~100Mb of information but Windows w... Read more

Using DOSBox I am able to confirm that the folder and the files exist. So I guess my question would now be how can I view folders which windows hides from adminstrators? I want to RESTORE a folder that only exists in skydrive(2).old on my desktop running Win 8.1

Is it possible to restore from an .old folder in Skydrive?

A:RESTORE a folder that only exists in skydrive(2).old

Hello Mr. Barnard, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If this was just a folder that you had created in your SkyDrive folder, then you could just create the folder in your current SkyDrive again, and copy the contents from the skydrive(2).old location into it.

Hope this helps,

A process or thread crucial to the system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated.

I don't know what to do or how to find what the cause is.
I ran Seatools, memtest, intel processor diagnostic tool, furmark, prime95. Couldn't found anything.
I was having problems with EIO64.sys before in my old OS, that is why I installed this one, but this one does not have any EIO64.sys driver.

I have a blue screen problem and I have a no-dump-file problem.

This OS is a few weeks old and the computer is over a year old.

I just posted the folder just in case, maybe there is some useful information there.
I know (at least guess) that there is no dump files there.
(minidump is enabled on my notebook)

Can the problem be CMOS battery?
Is CR2032 the right part?

A:No minidump folder exists (it is enabled)

As your PC is set to use 'Minidump' you must create it in root of C: Drive.

A software create directories on a typical Windows 2010 file server, really no configuration or law and restriction on the shared directory.
(This software uses Linux Samba to create the directory)

Randomly sometimes one does not see the directory created directly, we must close the explorer several times, wait a while or reboot the machine.

On the server directory exists immediately (Server 2012).

Please note this does not affect a machine, but the whole network.

I do not know what to think, someone has been there ever been such a problem?

Help! I've got weird problems in XP Pro. A while ago, I created some folder shortcuts on my desktop. The one in question goes to:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Music Stuff\Samples Folder

When I double click on the shortcut, the folder "Sample Folder" directly opens my files and everything is there, fine and dandy.

But for some reason, all of a sudden when I try to access it from root, by going folder to folder, I get to:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\

and then it dead-ends. No \Documents\etc. The same thing happens when I go into the application to try and get to that folder from within the app. I get to \All Users and then I see all the other folders but \Documents. Files that have previously been saved with samples from the rest of the path (\Documents\Music Stuff\Samples Folder\whatever folder) all load properly but I can't get to that folder from either in or out of an app without using the shortcut. Has my Documents folder just turned invisible all of a sudden or something? I have the Folder options on the computer set up to show all hidden folders so that shouldn't be it. It's driving me nuts!

Hi, and thanks for this great forum!

I've tried sorting this problem but haven't seen an answer specific for my problem.

I created a library called "Utilities" (for my portable utilities that I use regularly.)

It is there but it is no longer visible and I can't recreate it from Windows Explorer. When I try to recreate it I get the message:

"Do you want to rename New Library folder to Utilities (2). There is already a folder with the same name in this location.

(I tried restoring default folders Libraries >>> (Right Click) Restore Default Libraries as well, but of course. nothing happened.)

When I go to:

the Utilities library is not visible and can't be recreated as I get the same message as above. (But I can create a regular Utilities file folder, but needless to say it doesn't show up in the Windows Explorer Libraries)

I already have folders visible:
Control Panel >>> Folder Options >>> Show all Folders
Control Panel >>> Folder Options >>> View>> Show hidden files folders and drives

I'm at a loss? Suggestions?

Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

My girlfriend's laptop (Sony Vaio, # VGN-CS220D) recently had freezing problems, as mentioned here, and it was working alright for a few days, but it started freezing again. I was going through the driver updates for it available from Sony's site, but it would freeze up around every third driver that I installed. Both the regular Disc Scan and the bluescreen Disc Scan from the bootup/Safe Mode menu finished without finding any problems, but once we log in from the Vista User Login screen the desktop is a blank black field, and while the task bar is still along the bottom none of the shortcuts in it or in the Start Menu will do anything other than bring up a brief flash of a window before disappearing. This is true for standard start up and all Safe Modes... (The only difference being that the black field says "Safe Mode" in all four corners.)

I fear that the computer has met its demise, but if there is anything to be done, I'd love to hear it.

So I am trying to figure out how/why this is the way it is. I have a user that has their desktop as a folder (quicklaunch style) on their taskbar. There are no desktop icons on the actual desktop and any new icons created by installing a program or dragging and dropping to the desktop are moved to this idiotic location on the taskbar.

I have checked the registry and Shell folders appear correct.

I have a feeling that a previous user has used something similar to Tweak UI and changed this and now it has me scratching my head. Any suggestions on restoring this desktop?

I am having very strange problem.

I am using Windows 7 - Home Premium 64bit. There is only one user on this machine which is Administrator and this computer is not connected with any networks.

I am trying to move all of User's folders to D: drive. I have successfully moved, My Pictures, My Documents, My Videos, Contacts and other folders but when I try to move "Desktop" folder, it gives me an error message at the end of the operation (after coping all the data to the new location) that "Folder Redirection Failed", "Operation was cancelled by the user". I have tried to change the location several times for this Desktop folder but every time I do it, I get this error message.

Now situation is... Data from my Desktop is present in its default location but also copied to D:\Users\MyName\Desktop folder. Means, exactly the same data is placed on two different locations but default Desktop location is still at C: drive.

Can anyone help that why I am unable to change my Desktop location?

P.S I am trying to change the location by right clicking on Desktop folder in User's folder, then Properties and then Location tab. It's exactly the same way by which I moved all of my other User's folders successfully.
Look forward to any quick help.

Hi! I'll describe my problem with an example. Let's say I'm moving a file to the desktop (the folder in Windows Explorer). When I then check the desktop, the file isn't there. I recently had to deal with a pretty nasty Malware/Virus. i dont know which one, I didn't bother to read the logs of the virus detectors as I was removing it, I just kept working on getting it gone.I think it's gone now, but i'm left with one annoying side effect. I'm including a screenshot of my desktop. It's a folder. It's actually on TOP of my desktop, and it's a real folder. I can click on the 2 icons there, and they will open. If i try to move any icons around my desktop, it thinks i'm trying to put them INTO that folder. Now, if i go into hijack this, i find this line, I assume the issues are related.024 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection (no file)I cannot remove this with hijackthis. I select it, click Fix, then click scan.... and it's still there. I've got Adaware, Hijackthis (latest), Malwarebites, and none of them seem to care about the issue, or my lack of a desktop.EDIT: add spybot s&d to the list of programs i've tried. It found a couple registry entries for smitfraud, but it didnt' get me my desktop back.

A:Folder IS Desktop, and 024 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection

OMG i got it on my own. You have no idea how happy i am. I'm going to post this solution for search and archival purposes.

One of the above programs, not sure which one, finally unlocked the window. Scrolling my mouse to the top of the screen allowed me to pull down the window, and close the little bugger.

But i still have the 024 thing in my hijackthis, and it still wont remove. I'd appreciate help on this one just for peace of mind.

I encountered this last night, something had changed HCKU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders key "Desktop" value to \Users\USERNAME\Cookies\Desktop from \Users\USERNAME\Cookies\Desktop.

The end result is that the desktop was moved to said folder, I had to change it back and restart explorer.exe to restore it.
It didn't change for the other user on the machine. HijackThis, superantispyware, avg, and malwarebytes came up clean. I tried a sfc /scannow and it found no issues.

This is a Windows 7 x64 install, with UAC enabled. Am I infected? I don't browse the web much on this machine, only used for gaming and occasionally PuTTY, EmacsW32 if I don't want to reboot into OSX. If it's not an infection, I'm not sure what exactly is going on. I really don't even use windows explorer much, save perhaps windows key -> type what I want to open -> enter, so I don't think I dragged anything and 'mv' in cygwin wouldn't mess with the registry, just move the directory, if I had a typo somewhere... Thanks!

I did something which caused the All Users Desktop folder to appear on my desktop. It's not a shortcut so I can't delete it since it is a system folder.

Is there anything I can to do remove it from my desktop?

Also, I wanted to have all my desktop icons in alphabetical order (except those that are permanently first). So I moved the Owner desktop folder into the All Users desktop folder; it shows up as a subfolder. Since I moved its contents into the main All Users desktop folder, there is nothing in it. But since I can't delete it I am assuming that all of Desktop Folders for each user is a system folder and can't be removed even though it is empty. I just wonder if my assumption is right?

Thanks, grandpaw

Try running System Restore to a point in time before you made these changes. You just had your system reinstalled. You need to leave system folders alone. Every user account has a Desktop folder. You can't delete them, and you shouldn't mess with them.

Hi everyone

Wonder if anyone can solve this problem I am having. Somehow a folder called 'desktop' has appeared in the My Music folder. The desktop folder contained all the shortcuts and folder from my computer desktop screen. I deleted the folder but this simply deleted all my items on my desktop and i lost everything. When I rebooted the computer the folder appeared in My Music folder again but minus all the desktop items (just a few). So what happens is if I say add a new folder by right mousing on the desktop screen, the new folder appears in the Desktop folder in My Music folder. In other words the folder is acting as a sort of backup to my desktop. Hope this makes sense and wonder if anyone can explain what is going on and how to resolve it. Thanks

A:Desktop Folder

You might be able to find a 3rd party tool that can "get the icons (shortcuts) only to display in this folder only".

Natively, if you turn off the navigation pane for this one folder, then that pane is off for all folders.

A work around might be to make the explorer window so narrow that the navigation pane goes out of view.

Hi folks.

So I had to force restart my laptop when a game (...Zoo Tycoon Marine Animals) crashed and wouldn't let me close out. When I restarted my computer, I noticed that a folder on my desktop (Ironically named Folders) was gone. The other icons and folders on the desktop were still there. Here's a list of things that I have tried:

-Looked in the Recycle bin... Nothing.
-Checked the "Show Hidden" feature, and nothing changed.
-Tried using the search feature to look up both the folder itself as well as individual documents within the folder... "No results were found".
-Re-booted my laptop, to no avail.
-Went in through Word to see if I could access any of my documents that were there.... "The directory name is not valid" when I clicked on a file that had been in Folders.
-Restored my computer to a day ago, when the folder was still there... Nothing.
-Opened the cmd.exe and looked through the TREE command to see if the folder had ever existed... Got confused when a notepad file opened up and I had no clue what to do. [ ex: c:\ /a > 0 & start notepad 0 ]
-Looked at the properties on the desktop... Showed the amount of files there SHOULD be with the missing folder... But no folder.
-Attempted to use the File Restore through Windows.... which failed because I had never turned it on.
I am absolutely at my wits end... This has all of my research saved for my dissertation and my papers for graduation in December. What gives?!

It is similar to an undelete program in usage. Except that it gets its files from Restore Points. Just go to Desktop on a date before the folder died and see if it is listed. If so export it.

Even if it doesn't work in this instance, it is handy to have in the toolbox.

I just bought a quick new hard drive and I've been moving everything other than Windows to it. Anything in program files, I uninstall and reinstall on the new D drive. I've moved My Documents to that drive as well. The only thing left to move is the desktop folder in C:\Documents and Settings\(User). I cannot figure out how to do this. I've tried using one of Microsoft's powertoys called Tweak UI, but that didn't work. I also tried a registry edit, but that didn't work either. I've been working on computers for years, but I've never had to do this before...slightly annoying. Anyone know how to do it?

A:Move the desktop folder...

can't you just move the items in the desktop folder to the new desktop folder?

I recently restored some folders to the desktop of my PC from my Acronis backup archive. Amongst these I also inadvertently restored some Windows system folders that I did not require. When I try to delete the folders manually I get the 'This folder is shared with other people' and 'Destination Folder Access is denied' messages. If I right click on the folders and go Properties > Security, no category of user has 'Full Control' and it is impossible to change this as the Edit options are all greyed out. Having already having spent some time Googling I'm aware this is an old chestnut and there doesn't appear to be any straightforward solution. Notwithstanding, can anyone help, please?
