Update and Cortana

Q: Update and Cortana

Hi. Has this happened to anyone else?
I had set up Cortana for use in the UK, downloaded the language and speech components.
Everything was working fine and then the latest update restarted my computer and Cortana needed set up again.
I am in the process of downloading the components again.

Preferred Solution: Update and Cortana

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Update and Cortana

I'm really starting to hate Windows 10.
Ok, so after setting up Cortana again, now the search function doesn't work, I just get a big empty grey box.

And things are slow too.
Its driving me nuts. Its not as if I even did anything! The update happened by itself and now I have issues.
I don't have the time or energy for this cr*p.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

After making the Anniversary Update I found that activation of the Cortana function on my lock screen did not occur per the change video and on my regular home page when I addressed Cortana with "Hey Cortana" the following quote came up on the Cortana screen "create a to-do list" every time even when I typed my request in. Can I correct these problem or is the Anniversary Update messed up?

I'm currently running Win10 on a couple desktops with no microphones. I've disabled disabled Cortana. I've kept the search function (local only - no web search). And I do not use a Microsoft account to log into Windows.

I understand that I will not be able to disable Cortana after installing the Anniversary Update. I'm not sure what this means for me. How visible is Cortana going to be? Is there going to be any way to say I just want a plain vanilla search function?

Hey guys. I wonder if this is a problem for my Thinkpad X Yoga 3 or a Windows problem. After a recent update on my W10P (1809), Cortana is no longer working. Clicking the Cortana app, clicking in the search box, or yelling "hey Cortana", none of them works. There's no microphone icon in the search box. Right clicking the taskbar doesn't show me the Cortana option either. I searched the web, tried opening a new local account, typed some command lines to reinstall it, nothing worked. Does anybody have the same issue? Any suggestions? Thanks.

First, I'd like to point out that I found and read this thread that, in the last post, tells me how to disable Cortana. https://techguy.org/1185771

But for me, that is not enough. I want her file gone completely. I opened the file location and moved Cortana's file onto my desktop. I've yet to delete it because I don't know what harm could or could not happen.

That being said, let me tell you about my laptop, in case that makes any difference.
My laptop is a SonicMaster by Asus, E403S Series (the biggest piece of sh*t that I will NEVER buy again. SO MANY PROBLEMS.)

If any more laptop info is needed, let me know. While I'm considered the tech guru of my house, all of this is way beyond my head.

So, when I first upgraded to Win10, I went through a hundred steps to make sure that Cortana was removed from my machine. I mean, deep into the settings, command prompt stuff, everything.
I did check and it seemed to have been eradicated. It wasn't in the background processes or anything like that.

Imagine my shock last night when I checked my background processes and I found Cortana very much alive.
It MUST have been brought back to life through a windows update. I mean, I killed that thing.

How do I make sure Cortana is completely killed without any hope of it coming back on me?
I feel like Microsoft is stalking me with this thing.

Recently I've been having a lot of windows 10 auto updates, (presumably this 'anniversary update' thing).

Today, whilst minding my own business perusing one of my regular forum pages (in firefox), I had an advert popup in my action centre which opened with the line 'looking for something tasty?.... I can help you with that ? blah blah '. It was a cortana thing, and when I clicked, it opened the edge browser on a page loaded with local takeaways. Unrelated to what I was looking at and unsolicited.

This is fresh off the back of the now daily popups from my antivirus (I changed from AVG to Avast but it?s the same on both ( but at least spamming me about their own product!)

Anyway, I did a quick search and notice on another page, microsoft has also removed the ability to disable cortana easily in it's local settings in these new updates, which altogether seems a bit insidious.

Seriously, is this the future?

If anyone's come across this and has an idea of the specific code of the update responsible I'd be grateful to know.

Thanks

How to Disable Cortana in Windows 10 Anniversary Update

If you are like me and have no use for Cortana, you going to want to disable it completely. There are two ways to disable Cortana.

1. Registry Tweak and 2. Group Policy Editor. If you have Windows 10 Home, you are going to need to use the registry tweak, if you are using Windows 10 or above, you can use group policy (gpedit.msc). Now you may be saying to yourself is there not a toggle switch to turn this feature on or off? There used to be this feature, but Microsoft have removed it. I guess they really want you to use Cortana.

Disable Cortana via the Registry

1. Open registry editor by typing regedit in run box
2. Now navigate to this location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search.
3.Don?t see a Windows Search folder? just right click Windows folder and select New / Key. Now name it Windows Search.
4. Now select Windows Search folder and Right click it and select New / DWORD (32-bit) Value.
Name that value AllowCortana. set the value to 0.
5. Log off and log back on and Cortana will be disabled.

Disable Cortana via Group Policy

1. Open group policy editor by pressing Windows key + R and type gpedit.msc and pressing Enter.

2. Navigate to this location in group policy editor. Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components /Search.

On the right pane find Allow Cortana setting double click it and set it to disable. You can disable the other Cortana feature b... Read more

A couple weeks ago, we got an early look at Cortana in Windows 10 and thanks to the new leak of Windows 10 build 9901, we have a lot more to share about the new feature.
As you can see from the images in this post, in build 9901, Cortana is much more refined in her appearance and she appears to be more responsive on our install. More so, we can also dig into the settings of the feature and gain a better understanding of where the feature is headed.

Googled this issue and it appears I'm not the only one with this problem and thus far Microsoft Forums have not really come up with a solution for me or anyone else, other than setting up a new account profile which didn't work. They want me to do a repair in place upgrade which means I'll have to reinstall windows 10. This is a windows 10 computer, not an upgrade. Is there any other option? Can you assist? I keep getting Cortana leaping up at me whenever I click on the start box, and want to know how to disable/remove this annoyance. I have read through a procedure using regedit/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and so on, that eventually gets me to where I must ensure that an "AllowCortana" value is set to 0 (zero).

I have followed this advice to the letter several times, but nothing is changed once I have restarted my PC. Can anyone please point me the way of correcting this?

Answer to thread title: Cortana is the name of a fictional character in the Halo video game.

Now as to your question on it/her, in Windows 10, Cortana is a web search/system & folder search tool, that can be used by voice or text(typing). Like any search tool, you need to be more specific, and if using voice, Cortana needs to be trained. Also when cleaning your system(browser and OS) you need to make sure you DO NOT clean MS search or browser history, so Cortana can learn your interest's, and you can benefit from the advanced search algorithm.

Hi people,
I've recently installed Windows 10 and was messing around with the tools and settings, especially the search button next to Start. When I looked into Cortana I enabled her to try it out, but it seems I cannot disable her completely. I want the search feature
as how it was when I installed the OS.
Here is a screenshot (https://gyazo.com/6c338cc261adad458f01f2456b08de3f) of how it looks now, and I would like to get it back to default which looks like this (http://imgur.com/a/W2KHt).
I tried these instructions:

1.Left click on Search
box.

2.Click Sandwich
icon on Top left.

3.Click Settings and Turn
off the button under ?Do you want Cortana to work for you??

This will turn off Cortana on your user profile. If you want to remove Search box in taskbar, right click on taskbar and
click Search and choose Disabled.

But there isn't a "Turn off" feature anywhere to be found. Any help is appreciated!

Q: Cortana

Have searched but can not find a clear answer. Will Cortana open websites? From what I read, it will providing the website is bookmarked and pinned. Is this correct?
If the website requires login, eg eBay, will Cortana do the login for you? Since Edge will be able to save usernames and passwords, it seems possible. Eg, can I say "Hey Cortana, open eBay" and the eBay login page opens. Then can I say, "Hey Cortana, login to eBay" or will I have to click the login button?
I am asking this for my visually impaired friend. I am wondering if Win 10 with Edge and Cortana could help him. Thanks.

A:Cortana

Hi Artbuc From what I can read, Cortana could already open websites by voice on Windows 8.1 for Phone, so I don't know why the Cortana on Windows 10 couldn't do a such thing http://www.windowscentral.com/how-open-websites-voice-cortanaAs for the login, you can use Cortana to login on Facebook apparently, but I don't know for the other websites.https://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/how-to/wp8/cortana/cortanas-settingsAlso, saving passwords locally in a browser is a security risk, so I wouldn't do that. I would use a password manager instead like LastPass.

Is there a guide anywhere as to what can/can't be done with the app?

For example, I added some things to my calendar, and asked if there was anything in there for today (both spoken and typed question).

When spoken, all I get in response is: 'Something's not right. Try again in a little bit'.

When typed, a search is performed, but no documents are found.

It's quite possible I'm totally misunderstanding how Cartana works, but I would have thought that searching my calendar would be fairly basic.

Any help appreciated.

I suspect there may be some transitions going on internally in preparation for a new Build. I'm just guessing though.

Hello
I have been trying to solve this by myself and in doing so found many people with the same issue. As soon as I put Cortana 'ON' the light to the camera/mic stays on. I don't think I am being spied upon but a light can only stay on so long before it is, so long.
I am now using Google with voice search but I would think Cortana should work when enabled w/o the light staying on.
I have a usb Creative mic/camera for the desktop and a built in for the laptop.
I am trying to use Win 10 fully, but find 'photo', 'mail' etc to be inferior to Win essentials and previous products. There is no video editor unless you use the old Windows dvd app but that has limitations and needs codecs to be imported. It seem the technology is either cheaper or poorly designed. I can see Linux taking over if this trend continues because the apps are getting less functional. The numerous options are dazzling regarding privacy and would take a etch to know which to enable, or not.

Anyway, what is causing this lite issue and is there a solution or reasonable answer?
Thank you
Peter

I upgraded my Surface Pro to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1. Ever since then I have had issues with Cortana. I seem to solve them and then Microsoft releases another forced update and it gets all flaky again. Right now, I can say "Hey, Cortana" and it will hear me and show "listening" with all the letters flying by. But it can't hear my request and then tells me something is wrong. No kidding. Since I still have the ISO of Windows 8.1 on here there are no system restore points. That is what I would do first. Strangely, I have a Dell two in one that came with Windows 10 and I had to fight to get Cortana to work on there too but now it seems stable. I would surely appreciate any tips or fixes. Even if they're only temporary and have to be done over and over. I doubt I can be the only person having this problem. Thanks in advance.
