My computer is no longer sending signals to any of my external hardware

Q: My computer is no longer sending signals to any of my external hardware

My computer still starts up making the same sounds and lights and such as usual, but there is no longer any signal to my monitor, mouse, keyboard, or speakers. I discovered this upon trying to wake it from sleep mode, the computer woke up, but no lights turned on on the keyboard, no sound came out of the speakers, and my monitor said no signal.

This happened once before, and we took it to a local repair place. They hooked it up to their monitor and keyboard and it worked fine. I've tested my monitor on another computer and it works just fine, as well as the rest of the hardware. Last time they said something had likely unseated itself, and the ride in the car had reseated it. What should I try?

Preferred Solution: My computer is no longer sending signals to any of my external hardware

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Take it back to the local repair place... Have them check it once more

E-machine bought in 2005... when I turned it on this morning, it seemed to start normally... but nothing actually happenned... fan is running, power button light is on, 'thinking' light came on for a few seconds then went out. I can open and close my cd rom drawer but there are no lights on my keyboard and my monitor says 'no signal'. I am looking for opinions... is it worth the $100 to have it checked out or should I put that $100 towards a new one. I've been told it may be the video card but it is an integrated video card.. does that mean I have to replace the motherboard? Anyone know what this could be? Thanks for any and all help!

A:fan is running, but computer not sending out signals

E-Machines were hit particularly hard with the Faulty Capacitors problem . . see this for more: http://www.badcaps.net/

You can open the case and closely examine the caps to see if you have any bulging or leaking ones.

Otherwise, eMachines are also plauged with weak power supplies . . you might test it with a new or known good one

I'm building a new computer and I was able to install all my hardware properly and then decided to try and boot the computer and install the OS.

The main problem is that I'm getting a black screen on my monitor. Rather. The monitor isn't receiving any signal and simply going to standby. To be honest, I'm not really sure what's wrong. I tried this on two monitors (22" CRT by Ikegami and a 19 LCD by Acer).

Everything is hooked up to the power supply, every fan is running properly. From the looks of it, it looks like it's running well. Could there be any other reason why my computer isn't sending any signals?

Random information:
The CD drive works in that, it can open and close, though I think it's just purely a power thing.

I've hooked up HDA (as opposed to AC'97) power from the tower to the mother board.

The 4850 is in the PCI 2.0 X16 slot that the manual considers "optimal" for a single VGA card (blue). I'm thinking of switching it over to the black to see if there's a difference.

I'm not hearing any BIOS beep codes. In fact, there's no beep at all.

A:Solved: My computer isn't sending any signals to the monitor

Why don't you try your board outside your case probably is touching ground???

Not sure if this is the right spot for this thread.

My desktop (lowend gaming) was working fine all day, i unplugged it for about 6hrs to plug another computer in. Once i replugged in the first computer that im having issues with nothing was getting a signal. the lights and fans were all on and it sounded like it normally does when it boots up but my monitor, keyboard, and mouse got no signal. im not a tech person so what i have tried so far is. turning it off and back on, unplugged and replugged all the cords, tested the cords on a diff computer, left the computer running for an hour and restarted it. still nothing. any advice/ help would be great.

Could you reemphasize the issue? Is this problem occurring on the low-end gaming computer or "the first computer?"

The thread title might be misleading: I don't KNOW that my system is sending signals that I am in Indonesia, but I believe it might be.

Something is very wrong and here are the symptoms seen and steps taken to discover what it is:

(1) I have TweetDeck with a filter set up to see certain tweets, and I noticed what should be about 2 tweets per second down to 2 tweets per minute. The tweets are curiously quite Asian, and some tweets show up with foreign script characters (I assume they are Indonesian, based on item #2)

(2) Whenever I am suspicious about something, it's an automatic virus scan. Although my normal antivirus running is MSE, I also start Malwarebytes free as a 2nd look. This time I started it immediately, and it was updating its version (seems it does it all the time) with the setup asking for "Indonesian" instead of default "English." That cinched it for me that something was amiss.

(3) While the virus scans ran, I checked Control Panel->Region and Language: that was set as it should be ("United States" everything)

(4) I ran "sfc /scannow": nothing wrong there

(5) I suspected a proxy set at the machine and there was no indication of any proxy

(6) I checked the administration of the router, and there was nothing out of the ordinary (suspicious)

(7) I have WinPatrol, but I am not finding anything alarming or where it indicates a change

(8) A look at Hijack This log did not suggest anything unusual.

Have you tried an Adware cleaning program?

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop. Follow both step 1 and 2.

Step 1.Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
Click on the Scan button.
AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) will open in Notepad for review (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

Step 2.
Using AdwCleaner v3: Scan & Clean:
This time click on the Clean button.
Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S#].txt) will open automatically (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder

I've been having problems with my pc lately. when under load, suddenly monitor says no signal and gpu fans go at full speed (like when it does when you don't connect 12v atx's correctly) including the second one which only starts working after a certain heat level and leaving me with having to restart it.
I feel like frequency of this happening is getting rather quick. But it might be because i am stress testing on another game, so don't quote me on that, just keep in mind.
I considered psu problems, but have no ability to test it.
Also got to mention this is probably not a heat issue. Heat doesn't gradually build up, case fans don't go to %100 before this happens.
My pc isn't new, it's been working perfectly for a couple of years. Here are the specs
-Sapphire hd radeon 7950
-I7 3770k
-Corsair VS650 - 650w
-Motherboard is pegatron ipx-something, it really doesn't matter. I know it's horrible.
-8gb of ram
Thank you for your assistance!

Hey all;

Long time listener, first time caller. Recently, my computer stopped making an internet connection. I did the usual song and dance; restarting computer, modem, checking cables, calling my ISP. I opened my cmd prompt, ipconifg, said media disconnected. I tried to release/renew, flush the DNS, and nothing. 32 bytes out, no bytes back. Can't renew my IP.

I go to Device Managers; My ethernet card is fine; everything is greast. I re-install my drivers, and restart. Nothing. I find out that despite the fact that my hardware is all present, I have no use of video, or soundcard. Previously, the machine worked beautifully; when I came home, no hardware functioned at all. I have recently run a virus scan, which came up clean (i scan regularly)

I'm running XP, SP3, 4 g ram, 2.33 Triple core processor, with ample power (550w), AVG virus scan running...

I'd really rather not install windows.

is video, sound card, and ethernet built in to motherboard or are they separate cards ?

I bought a new I/O Magic external burner Monday. It was working Monday and Tuesday with no problems. This morning when I went to hibernate the laptop and unhook everything to bring my laptop to work hibernation got stuck because explorer or something wasn't reponding. I got the error saying the computer couldn't transfer files to my E drive (external hard drive) and F drive (the burner). I thought nothing of it because this is a normal error I get about the EHD after unhooking it and restarting the laptop later without it plugged in.

Well anyway, now my laptop won't read the burner as being plugged in. I tried it in all my USB ports and it doesn't work in any of them. However, if I unplug the new and plug in my old on (same I/O burner- just the older version) the computer reads that one without a problem.

Any ideas how to get the new burner to be read by the laptop again? Thanks

I have had my Maxtor One Touch lll external drive for several years and have never had any problems with it. Last week my computer stopped recognizing the drive. I've unplug, shut down and restarted with no luck. How do I get the drive back up or how do I get the over 1000 photos off of the drive?

A:Maxtor lll external HDD no longer recognized by my computer

Try the external on another computer. If it is not detected by another computer, take it in for repair or take the drive out of the enclosure yourself. You might be able to attach the drive to your computer like a second drive and attempt to recover any data that way

Ok, so I have an external hard drive that I use for both of my computers. We store albums, videos, photos, etc. on it. However, neither computer recognizes the hard drive anymore. It is connected through a USB cable and is a LACIE. It won't even show up in My Computer. I have tried restarting both computers, unplugging the drive for thirty seconds and plugging it back in, but none of this has worked. If someone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a P1 GEN2 OLED. While the internet is flooded with complaints of the OLED screen itself, the thunderbolt 3 port of my P1 GEN2 magically stopped working for no reason.  I have been using the laptop with an external display ever since I got the laptop. All went well. Suddenly from yesterday, the external display starts turning into a blue sreen with "NO SIGNAL" shown on it.  I had a windows cumulcative update (KB4532693) and windows security update (KB4524244) yesterday and I suspected that the update might be the culprit. I rolled back the OS. No change. Still NO SIGNAL.  I searched this Forum. Played with Thunderbold 3 menu in the Bios. Everything was enabled and every single option of "security level" was tried. Still NO SIGNAL.  I checked Intel Mangaement Engine software. It is already the latest version. Reinstalled it. Still NO SIGNAL.  I checked Nvidia driver. Latest version already.  In sum, the problem is: the thunderbolt port is still able to power the extenal display but just simply does not pass signal to the external display. HDMI port, however, still passes signal if use an HDMI cable.  I want to give it a shot here to see if anyone has experienced similar issues and how they sovled the problem before I call Lenovo technical support, the staff of which does not seem to know more than some people here on this Forum.

Anyway, here's my problem.  I'm still running a laptop and a PC operating on Windows XP which I need to back up from time to time.  I use a WD MyPassport for that.  All was fine until sometime over the summer the laptop suddenly stopped recognising the external drive: I got the "USB device not recognised.  One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned ..." message.  I tried it on the PC: same thing.  I assumed that the drive had indeed failed, and went out and bought another one, but that didn't work either, despite allegedly being compatible with XP.  At that point, I got suspicious and plugged the external drive into my Windows 8.1 laptop, and found it was still working, so it's clearly not the drive that's at fault here.
I've been hunting around for various fixes on the internet and found some that should work, except that the general recommendation has been to assign a new letter to the drive - but if the computer doesn't recognise it in the first place I can't do that!  A lot of the solutions require you to go into Disk Management via Run:, but the trouble is that when I try that I get the following message:
"Logical Disk Manager
The specified service does not exist as an installed service"
and, in the bottom of the window:
"Unable to connect to Logical Disk... Read more

I have a Seagate external hard drive hooked to my XP computer and it is working and backing up fine. When I initially set up my Vista computer - I simply hooked up the drive with USB port - and opened like an extra drive and copied what I wanted on the new computer. When I went to add some files today - it will not reveal those files and keeps telling me access is denied. I have searched and cannot find solution to this. When I look at properties on the Vista - it shows the space is taken up but will not open to the files that are clearly visible on the XP - most of the research I found talked about security settings and nothing I did made a difference - and the mystery is that it worked just fine the last few times I have done this - over period of 2 months.
Hope I am in the right spot - posted first message today and got a great solution so hoping that someone will know how to fix this easily.
Thanks so much!

A:My vista computer will no longer read the data on my external hard drive

I found the fix - it took me LOTS of searching - and two tries as I chose the wrong identity the first time - not sure if it is consistent but needed to pick the administrator as the owner and now it works as it did.

So i just bought new ram for my computer and installed it earlier today. I pluged my computer back in and nonr of the monitor's, keyboard or, mouse wont respond to my computer. I went back to my computer and took out the new ram but, the problem is still happening. Any suggestions on what I should do?

Thank you

A:My computer will not send signals to my monitors, ect.

No one [other than you] has any idea what ram, what hardware, etc you are using. Post your exact system specs. Do not post 16gig of ram; post the exact brand and model# Do that for ALL of your parts.

How to properly install ram in a desktop;
1 System OFF, remove the pw cord from the back of the pw supply
2 Press the ON button 2~3times. This removes all residual pw from the pw supply capacitors
3 Open the case and pull out the old ram. Install new ram and be sure it is fully seated in the slot or slots
4 Replace the pw cord and side cover
5 Pw ON and make sure all is well

Failure to use the above procedure can result in ESD to your components.

Have you gone back and rechecked/reseated ALL connections inside the case? If not, do so.

Yesterday I discovered my computer will no longer read my flash drives, external hard drives or SD cards.  If I plug in any of them, they don’t even show up in Disk Management.  In Device Manager they will show up, but will have a yellow flag and under Properties it says the driver for this device is not installed even though they’ve been used before on the computer.  Clicking “Update Driver” doesn’t help because it searches and says there are no drivers for this device.  If I go to the “Events” tab, it gives the  date and “Device configured (null)”.
I restarted my computer today, hoping it might correct this problem, but when restarting I ended up with a message about an inaccessible boot drive.  After going into a loop several times where it told me about the inaccessible boot drive and then restarted again, I finally ended up with a screen that gave me more options for troubleshooting such as doing a system restore point.  I had the computer perform a system restore and finally it took me to the welcome screen and then desktop.  Anyway, rebooting did not correct the problem about my computer not reading my flash drives, external hard drives or SD card.  Any ideas?  Maybe the problems I’m having are related to a recent Windows update (computer seemed to be working fine before the update), but don’t know for sure.

it looks like most USB HDDs in regular use on average only have about 2-3 years, whereas older ones purchased prior to 2002 have lasted for 5-7 years despite also being in regular use back then. so my question is, if modern made ones don't last as long as they used to anymore, would not using them at all unless absolutely necessary prolong the life expectancy of the drives? from what i've read lost of people use them very often to backup their data, so what if people used them less often? (EG: get 4 spare drives just to hold the really important data) if the drives are only ever taken out for a quick backup of all the accumulated data ONCE PER year, or not taken out at all for years and years , wouldn't they last much longer than used? and would be available when you really needed it compared to having it fail on you all of the sudden when you needed it the most?

i was thinking of getting a second brand new usb HDD drive, put my photos in there, then put away the drive in storage. maybe 10 years later the drive would still be accessible? i have an old 20gb drive i bought 9 years ago at futureshop and it still works, i never used the old drive much back then because i simply do not have that amount of data consistently requiring to do a backup, and when i got a pc with a dvd burner, i simply forgot about the drive all together. i have an old playstation 1 console that i never played much and the disc drive and power and everything still works like new on it tho... A:will using a hardware less makes it last longer?

If you're thinking of buying extra hardware to use in the future in case your old hardware breaks down, yup, if you store it in a dry safe place, it'll last probably forever, until it turns to dust which is like a thousand years. haha But rarely uing your computer will keep it in good condition and prolong it's existance, it's usually the hard drive that goes bad after a few years, but if you use it rarely, iy'll last a long while, but go for it, stock up on hard drives so if your hard drive fails in a decade or two, you can replace it. But don't let this hold you back from enjoying your computer, use it well and get more out of it, if you don't have money to stock up on extra computer parts, don't worry, they're usually cheap and your computer should last a long time anyways, just use it and when the time comes, get some new parts and extend it's experation date.

Hardware Wizard can no longer recognize new devices
Dell Vostro 1500 Laptop
XP SP3 with all updates since

The Hardware Wizard can no longer recognize new devices that I plug into the USB ports or XD/SD Card Reader slot. The message is:

"There was a problem installing this hardware.
An error occurred during the installation of the device.
The data is invalid"

I probably screwed up a driver somewhere along the way. Examples of hardware that it can't identify are a new Garmin GPS or a Logitech Wireless Mouse.

It DOES work okay when I plug in devices that it had seen before like the Targus Wireless Mouse or a SanDisk Extreme MicroMate or an SD card. Anything that it has seen prior to some unknown event it seems to work okay.

I have run all the diagnostics that came with the computer and all is okay. I just don't want to pay Dell to tell me what's wrong when they won't guarantee the fix.

I would rather not reload the OS as I have a lot of stuff on here that dates back to the DOS days and I'm not sure I know how this stuff works anymore (grep for example).

Note: I also posted this on the HArdware Forum

I have a regular win 7 home premium licence (full product, not OEM) that I ugraded to win 7 pro (still with a regular ugrade kit from MS). After a big hardware crash (something messed up with my motherboard) I had to clear CMOS and tried to get my computer back. I succeeded in relaunching windows after several trials, but it now says that my windows is no more guenine. MS guenine validation tool refuse both licences keys since one is only the ugrade kit and not the full licence and second one is a home premium licence key and I have pro installed.

Windows is installed on a SSD and I desactivated the system rollback utility and did not save service pack desinstallation files for disk space reasons.

Any help will be highly appreciated

Thanks in advance

A:Windows no longer guenine after hardware crash

The installed Product Key is the Default Key for Windows - and can never be activated.

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.
You may need to activate by phone.

Windows Update continues to nag me about a driver found for hardware I haven't had connected for a year+ now. I used to use a Razer Lycosa keyboard, so Update keeps finding a driver for that keyboard. All residual software for the keyboard has been removed long ago (files, folders [including hidden], devices & printers listing), and the driver was uninstalled back then too.

I can't find via searching what to modify in the registry to fix this, so exactly how can I remove the hardware entry from the registry so that Windows Update doesn't keep finding this driver for hardware I no longer use?

Hiya everyone

I having a bit of trouble with my home network, I just recently bought a new mobo, processor, etc..and I added the dvd rom, cd writer and hard drives...etc out of my old computer and put with the new items. Everything is up and running just fine except for my network.

My PC specs are:
2.40ghz P4
512mb pc400 ram
Windows XP Home

I currently have the onboard LAN disabled and have a NetGear 10/100mbs PCI NIC card in there. I have it connected to a NetGear Router which connects my broadband connection and two other 2 computers. I have access to the internet just fine but I do not have access to my other computers. On this machine I can see the other computers but it says something similar to 'Network Drive not available' when I click on it. From my other computers I cannot see this one at all.

I havent changed anything and it is all exactly as it was before (it worked perfectly before the upgrade). I have all the updated drivers for everything and my network settings are the same as they were before. Currently I have it set up with client for microsoft networks, file and print sharing and tcp/ip with netbios enabled over tcp/ip. I have no idea why file sharing wont work now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:File share no longer works after hardware upgrade

Try installing the IPX/SPX protocol on it also.

I just added a 200GB external drive to my laptop. All is working well but I'm
wondering how I should send programs to it that I want to take off the internal drive. Can I just drag and drop them or is there something else I need to do? I moved some music files by opening, highlighting all, then saying "move to" and they appear to be OK. Simple explanations will b greatly appreciated as I'm
not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to computers. Thanks!

First ever post and yes I have a problem. I have read threads all over the place before coming across this one:
disk 1 is unknown, not initialized, unallocated
I will read it again if someone can confirm that somewhere in here is the way to solve my issue.

My Seagate 1TB USB 3.0 external hard disk drive is notrecognised by my computer. It is less than a couple of years old ? no physical damage. I remember it being at about 10% of its capacity(mainly photographs and music files some of which it seems I have no backup elsewhere).
I tried the drive on my laptop machine as well and I got the message that it was installing drivers but this failed.
I have also followed all the troubleshooting advice on the Seagate UK website. I tried the contact page but it doesnot recognise the serial number on the back of the case so there is no way to contact anyone (how convenient).
When I plug my external HDD into my Windows 7 PC it seems to start up fine as I can feel the disc spinning. The blue light flashes and then comes on solid. When I unplug the HD the light goes off. If I try to restart the computer with the expansion drive in, it causes the computer to hang in the "shutting down" mode/screen.
It now shows in device manager simply as ?disk drive? and all the volumes information is missing.
In disk management Disc 1 unknown not initialized
It has appeared (after a long wait)in safely eject as ASMT1053

Any help would be much appreciated,

Hi everyone,

Here is what I can do...

1) Send internally
2) Recieve internally

What I can't do is send to an external email address. However upon clicking send mail in Outlook 2003, it DOES actually move to the 'sent items' list. Does this mean it is sending successfully to our exchange server but then getting stuck there? If so, how do I configure exchange to send out these mails?

A particular user on Exchange server 2003 gets this error when sending external email:

You do not have permission to send to this recipient.
server name.domain.local #5.7.1 smtp;554 5.7.1
[email protected] unknown.

Have compared the settings to a working one, and all look OK. We also tried recreating the user profile and email address but it still doesn't work.

Any suggestions?

A:Outlook account not sending external email

As you got the error back from the server, there is nothing wrong with the client or Outlook. It is probably some setting on the server side, blocking this specific computer, user or recipient.

My HITACHI external hard drive is no longer recognized on my vista PC. I get a pop up saying it can not recognize that specific USB device. Power is sent to the external as the light is flashing and the PC knows its there.

Same happens to XP, is it damaged? Was working not so long ago.

A:External No Longer Recognized

Hi and welcome. Either the enclosure or the drive itself is probably damaged. I'd take the drive out of the case and try to slave it to your computer.

My external HDD no longer works with USB 2.0. Whenever I connect I get the message saying this device can perform better if connected to a USB 2.0 port. I have had this HDD for about 2 years now and it has been like this for a good year or so.

When transferring data the speeds tend to be around 1MB/second (if i'm lucky).

I have another External HDD which works fine with USB 2.0 so my ports do work.

I am running Windows 7 and have recently done a fresh install.

Hi everyone. Major problem here! I have three USB 3.0 external HDs with lots of data that I recently hooked up to my Micca media player. The Micca was connected to the wrong adapter which didn't supply enough power, making the ON light dim as soon as the HDs would get connected. None of them were playable.

Ever since then, connecting any of them to either of my laptops gets this error: "unknown usb device needs more power than the port can supply". And sometimes not even that. The devices get hot so they're not completely dead, but beyond the error notice they don't get recognized at all on the computers.

I've gone into computer manage mode and the disks don't show up there or under USB devices. I uninstalled and reinstalled all the USB ports and still nothing. I got brand new USB 3 cables today and still nothing. And just to clarify, I've tried this on two different laptops as well as TVs with USB ports. They simply don't show up. I have a USB 2.0 HD that was also hooked up to the Micca but that one is fine for some reason.

Any chance they can be fixed? If not, can the data at least be recovered?

Win 10 no longer recognizes the external 2TB Fantom Drive for backup.
1. Uninstalled the drive using device manager. Cold booted.
2. Plugged in the HD (external power and 3.0 USB connection)
3. Does it's set up thing. Then there is a ! on the USB attached SCSI Mass storage device. It flashes briefly then the light goes out.
When doing a cold boot with the drive attached the light stays on thru the boot process, then goes out.
4. Tried updating driver - says most recent drive is already installed.
Went to properties Code 38 error message previous instance of device driver still in memory.

The drive used to work on my win 10 pro for backup. Got disconnected, and the error was to effect disconnected too long. Since then the laptop no longer recognizes the HD. I did a complete format of the HD. It still wasn't recognized by my laptop.
This HD works beautifully doing backup for my husband's win 10 home machine. No problem @ all!

I'm really frustrated!!!!
Thank you in advance for assistance

hello forum,

all of a sudden my external HDD (USB) is no longer performance optimized.
usually the properties window of the device has a tab "policies" where you can choose between "quick removal" and "better performance".

after recent system changes (BIOS update, windows updates, formatting the external HDD) i observed very poor performance.
i then noticed the following:
1) the device no longer shows up in systray / notification area for safe removal
2) the properties dialog no longer has the policies tab!

so it looks like the operating system has permanently activated the "quick removal" (write caching disabled) now and won't allow me to change it to "better performance" (write caching enabled, systray icon for safe removal).
but why?
and how to change it back?
some additional notes notes:

a) windows 7 is still showing proper behaviour for other removalbe devices (e.g. USB thumbs driver). it seems to be specific to my external HDD.

b) the external HDD is formatted with NTFS.

c) this is a dual boot system (win7 x64, win xp x86). my external HDD doesn't show those symptoms when booting into windows xp. so i can rule out the bios update as root cause. it seems to be specific to win7.

d) my system has 12 GB of RAM. so the full memory is visible to win7 x64, but only 2.5 GB is visible to winxp x86.

A:external USB HDD no longer performance optimized

any ideas how to proceed?

I came home from work yesterday & my computer no longer recognizes my Western Digital External extreme Hard drives. I had 2-250gig, 2-320gig, & 1-500gig My Book connected with no problems. I have a Seagate 320 GB external hard drive connected to my XP PC by 2.0 USB. Everything was working fine for several months, but for some reason, the drive is no longer recognized as being connected to the computer!! I have a bunch of things on that drive, since I use it primarily as a backup to the C: drive. Any pictures, music or documents that I just want to store are placed on that drive.

Now the computer doesn't recognize that this drive is connected, so all of the data stored here is not available to me. What happened??? I have unplugged and replugged the USB cable back in, but nothing!! I also have a couple of flash drives plugged into the computer, and there is no problem accessing them.

I suspect the drive is still under warranty, but that doesn't help me retrieve the info on it...much of it being sensitive, private personal stuff.

Can any one help me!!!! I really need to access that information.

A:External USB hard drive no longer seen

I have a friend who's called me twice with this problem. Twice, I've gone to his home and turned on the power.
Does the drive light come on? Can you hear the drive spinning?
These drives can be removed from the case and accessed in several ways.
If it's powering up and not accessible, I'd explore the warranty option first.
