T470s (20HF) - Can't see Thunderbolt controller in Windows 10 (and can't use ext. display usb-c)

Q: T470s (20HF) - Can't see Thunderbolt controller in Windows 10 (and can't use ext. display usb-c)

Hi Everybody, Hope i'll find help here. I spent hours to make my T470s (20HF) working with external display (LG 27UD88-W) via USB-C. I bought 40Gbps Belkin cable at price of gold.I updated all my drivers (lastest intel 620, all stuff i've found on Lenovo, Installed the thunderbolt software/drivers from Lenovo 17.3.74.400, BIOS etc).Well it looks like every thing is up to date. But I still don't have the ThunderBolt controller displayed in windows devides manager... And of course my 4K display is not working. When plugin USB-C C cable, the ext monitor detect something is hapenning, and Thinkpad is trying to use external display, but he doesn't success. The laptop screen blinks, CPU running high, something loops. Well what's going wrong here ?Thanks for your help

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

It appears that the only way to report a BIOS bug to Lenovo is to post in the Forum (at least that is what hardware support told me), so here goes! Base system:20HF-CT01WW (T470s)BIOS: 1.11 (issue also showed up under 1.10)Windows 10 Pro Edition, Creators Edition, fully patched. The Thunderbolt port only shows up in Device Manager when the Thunderbolt firmware utility is run - it appears that Thunderbolt ports dynamically attach to the PCI bus only when necessary (i.e. firmware utility asks it to turn on or a device is plugged into the port).Booting with battery from a cold boot (machine powered off for at least 15 seconds) results in a hang with the windows boot time circle of dots cycling endlessly. Hi All I have been crawling through these forums and Google in general, it seems a lot of people have similar issues. I run a T470s, I use a Startech USB-C to HDMI adaptor allowing me to connecto to 2 external monitors. I have done for many months and all was fine. I recently ran system update and found multiple drivers needed updating, I ran this and since I cannot use my external monitors.  Thunderbolt software is up to date, as per screenshot it doesnt show the controller version or details in lower half. Device Manager doesnt show the controller at all (even hidden devices). I have tried:uninstall/reinstall of TB SWrunning the firmware update tool but that just says 'No Active Controller' in the system.I have tried reinstalling every Intel driver availablethe BIOS was updated by System Update previouslyI have checked the BIOS settings and everything is enabled I found a system restore point from a few days ago which I think is before this started, rolling back to that allows the TB3 SW to show the controller version and a device showing in Device Manager but my monitors still dont work. A further reboot without changing anything takes me back to 'None' controller version and nothing in Device Manager. Open to the idea it could be my adaptor has died, I understand you sometimes need a TB3 device connected to update the FW (?) but I do not have any other devices, hoping to try my adaptor on another machine at head office next week to ... It's not clear to me what 'Wake by Thunderbolt' (hereafter WbT) does and whether or not it's required for 'Wake On LAN' (hereafter WOL).  In the T470s and T480s user guides, there's no mention that WbT is required for WOL so I'm thinking it's not.  But then again, since Ethernet is in the dock itself, and seeing how there are controls for PXE, I could see how it might be required. ReferencesT470s User GuideT480s User Guide

Has anyone experienced this issue below? I disable my internal Quadro M1000M, I plug in my eGPU (AORUS 1070 Gaming Box) via Thunderbolt, use it for a while. Then when I'm done using it, I unplug it, re-enable my Quadro M1000M and plug in my external monitor via HDMI.   The display driver crashes for both my Quadro M1000M and my Intel HD Graphics 530 and the external monitor never works.  Microsoft starts a Microsoft Basic Display Driver. I tried disabling and re-enabling both display adapters but external monitor still won't work, it just crashes the adapters again. The only fix to this issue I have found is to uninstall the Quadro M1000M in the device manager and restart the computer. Then after it restarts, I can use the external monitor again with the Quadro M1000M. So it's easy to do and not a huge pain in the butt, but if anyone knows a way to fix this issue without needing to restart my computer, that would be a great help.

Since January I tried to fix my Thunderbolt 3 Dock (40AC) to get it work together with my X1 Yoga Gen2 (20JE). It works nicely in the first months. Lenovo sends me a second dock, nothing changed. Today Lenovo changed my mother board, nothing changed. I changed all cables and tried any hint from support forums and our internal IT department. So different windows installation binaries was tested and all drivers as well as BIOS are the newest versions. Perhaps someone here has an idea what that means if the device manager in Windows says that the device (Thunderbolt Controller 15D2) is not connected to the computer and it is hidden. The device is not hidden and connected, that includes also then the ThunderBolt Software shows all two ports, only during the installation of the driver software or the update tool. That is really crazy. I think this is the main issue. Please check the attached screenshot. Any hint would be helpful. Thank you.

I'm thinking of getting a P70, I see it has 4 USB 3 ports and 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports.  My questions are: 1: Is each of the USB 3 ports connected to their own controller so that each port is capable of it's maximum bandwidth?  Or are all four ports connected to the same controller so that the data bandwidth is divided among the four ports? 2: Similar Thunderbolt 3 port question.  Is each of the two Thunderbolt 3 ports connected to it's own controller?  Or is the bandwidth shared between the two ports? I'm planning on using the USB 3 ports (maybe Thunderbolt 3 also) with a high end, high data rate USB 3 camera that, according to the specs, can use up 95% of the USB 3 bandwidth.  If I were to use two cameras at the same time, it would not work if all four ports are connected to the same controller/bus and sharing the bandwidth.  I have read that laptops usually share all USB ports on the same controller.  I'm hopeing it will be different with the P70, being a "professional" workstation class product. Thanks

Hello, I was trying to update my P1 Thunderbolt driver earlier today, in order to get my eGPU in work. After I restart, the eGPU just not able to connect to my machine. I've properly install the TB software, but when I want to perform a firmware update again, it shows the TB device is not installed. I've tried various BIOS settings for that but non of them works. I've tried several times of reinstall and uninstall the software with different versions, it just dont' work. Then, I opened the Version of the Controller Software, as the pic showed here, it shows unknown. SO does the firmware update detect, It showed as pic 2. I assume it's due to a corrupted drive of the controller, or it's broken. But I cant find any way to recover the controller driver version. Is it only happend on my machine?

Hi all, Recently picked up a T470S.  I'm not entirely sure what's going on with the newer T series notebooks, but the problems I'm having with this machine is similar to my old T460S.  I have used many T440 notebooks which have had 0 issues and much nicer displays. The T470S I have here is brand new.  I first started having issues with using it as a secondary display (main display is a 27" LED monitor).  I managed to play around with the settings to make it work but when I drag windows from one screen to another they blow up and then shrink (when moving files from the LED monitor to the notebook monitor).  This is the least of my problems: 1. I'm on the machine now for the first time without an external monitor hooked up.  The display was blown up and way too large.  My settings at the time were resolution: 2560x1440, scaling was set to 200%.  I reduced the scaling to 150% and the display is now fine.  Now that it's all set, I'm noticing explorer, and many applications are blurry, the text isn't crystal clear and readable (not even close to as good as my T440).  My eyes are killing just using the notebook.  I had to increase the brightness to help a tad.  I noticed Outlook is one of the worst programs and there is no compatibility tab or option for me to adjust the DPI settings which is recommended after researching a bit online.  I think Outlook is the worst due to the colors and style of Outloo ... Hi there, At least once per day when booting up my T470s I get past the Lenovo logo and my fingerprint is confirmed, but then the display stays black. All the indicator LED's work normally, but no matter how long I wait, the display stays black. Eventually, only a forced shutdown helps. It used to be maybe once per day, now it's daily. Additionally, from time to time the fingerprint reader does not recognize my fingerprint on the first try, but does not react to subsequent tries and it's indicator LED stays orange. Machine runs on current Windows 10, all drivers and updates installed. Was bought in Switzerland with on-site support, but I am currently in Japan and Lenovo does not list a Thinkpad service provider in Tokyo. How should I proceed? Many thanks

Hi, My X1 Carbon model number is 20KHCTO1WW I have an external monitor connected through HDMI port on the left side. Upon the first power up every morning, their is a very large chance that the external monitor does not light up because their is no thunderbolt 3 controller 15D2 in the list of System Devices. To make it work again, I have to shut down X1, unplug the power cord and press reset on the bottom with a paper clip. Then the thunderbolt 3 controller 15D2 shows up in System Devices and of course, the external monitor lights up. I think I have the current update installed: BIOS: Ver 1.27Graphics driver: V.24.20.100.6168Thunderbolt 3 firmware: V 1.0.10.0-N23TF12WThunderbolt 3 software: V17.3.74.400 thanks.

I have a T470s with FHD multi-touch 250 nits display. I want to upgrade to a brighter display (either FHD or WQHD). I have not found a brighter FHD display (which would be my first choice). Therefore, I am looking at upgrading to Lenovo FRU 01HW908. However, I also need to know which LCD cable to use with that (and whether the covers are different), hence my request for the serial-number-specific bill of materials (BOM) from someone who has this machine (or who knows how to get a specific BOM).The generic FRU BOM for the T470s lists too many different LCD cable options and it doesn't name them very well. I cannot figure out which one would go with display panel FRU 01HW908.I am also open to any suggestions for a brighter FHD touch panel. If I wanted to go with a non-touch panel, I know someone at thinkpads.com has already been kind enough to provide the necessary parts numbers:AUO mfg# B140QAN01.5 non-touch 25601440, 300 nits (plus 00UR903 cable) - known to work from: T470s screen in T460s

I've read that using a T470s with the USB-C (40A9) 40A90090 Dock connected to 2 Display Port Monitors has problems charging via the USB-C cable and that you also need to connect an external PSU to the laptop for power. I'm in an office setup, so the monitors would be 1080p. Can this be confirmed before I purchase?

My company has issue me a Lenovo T470s and an Ultra Dock to replace my existing equipment. I have two external monitors connected to the docking station with display port cables. The problem that I am experiencing is that if the laptop is docked and the cover is open, I get video on the laptop display and one external monitor. The other external monitor gets no signal and goes to sleep. If I close the laptop cover, I get video on both external monitors. A co-worker told me that this was working as designed and that the solution for getting video on all three monitors was to connect one external monitor to one of the display ports and the other to the DVI port. (He hadn't tested this configuration and is using two display ports with the laptop cover closed.) I tried my coworker's suggestion and got the same result but prior to switching to DVI, I downloaded and installed the latest(?) driver for the HD Graphics 620 adapter from this website (lenovo.com) and that seemed to solve the problem (when using two display ports) but after shutting the laptop down, I had the same issue the next day. What I want, is to have the laptop cover open and still be able to use two external monitors and get optimal resolution on all three monitors. What's the best configuration for achieving this? (Don't guess, like my co-worker. Give me something you've tested and that you can confirm that it works.)

Does anyone have the Apple Thunderbolt Display working with the Yoga 920? It should work with a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, but I can't get it to work for me. When I plug in the display it makes a little chirp and the Thunderbolt software asks me to authorize it. The device then shows up in the list of Thunderbolt devices but it is not connected. Authorizing the device again doesn't do anything. The display stays dark and any USB device plugged into it doesn't show up and doesn't even appear to be powered on. My guess is some magic has to happen to get the device to fully turn on, which seems like a driver problem but I can't find a Windows driver for it. Any suggestions would be welcome.

One display goes blank and one is duplicated with the laptop screen.  This is not typical docked behavior.  I moved from an  Elitebook 8540W with dock.  I'm really questioning my whether this was an upgrade.

However this monitor won't stay connected to my laptop.  Whenever I plug the monitor in Windows 10 plays it's "new connection sound", my screen goes black and a couple seconds later my screen is displayed on this 38" beauty. However every 15-30 seconds afterwards the display will flash black for a few seconds as my laptop disconnects and then reconnects. It doesn't matter if my laptop is open or closed, the constant disconnects occur (although when my laptop is closed the frequency drops to every few minutes).  Either way, it renders this monitor so frustrating that it's uselses and am figuring out which product I need to return.  Any advice or suggestions are recommended So far I have used lenovo vantage to upgrade all firmware. My buddy also plugged his Dell laptop into the monitor and had no issues whatsoever. So I'm leaning torwards this being a Lenovo issue and not LG. Thanks,

Hi all, Just recently got my hands on a shiny new W541 and it's hooked up to my Apple Thunderbolt Display using the Thunderbolt port. While this works, the fans are really loud when i.e. opening programs, new tabs in browser etc. I figured that it's because it uses the built-in Intel graphics GPU. Is there any way to "tell" it to use the Nvidia GPU for the thunderbolt port instead of the built-in one? :-) Thanks in advance. All the best, Bo

Take it up with Lenovo, or buy a dock (apparently that's the solution Lenovo had in mind)!!!

In theory, if the BIOS of the W540 behaved like the BIOS of the W530, then it should allow you to choose whether you want to use built-in Intel HD Graphics exclusively (W530 "integrated") or nVidia Graphics (W530 "discrete graphics"), or some dynamic performance-dependent combination (i.e. W530 "Optimus Mode").  This should be true (and IS true for the W530) no matter whether you're talking about the laptop screen, external monitors connected directly to ports on the W530 laptop, or whether you use external monitors connected through a dock.

The only "wrinkle" for the W530 is that if you have Optimus specified on the W530 then all external monitors are always 100% managed by the nVidia graphics (no matter whether connected directly to the laptop or connected through a dock). So with the W530 in Optimus mode it is actually only the laptop screen which can be controlled by either Intel or nVidia graphics.  For most uses it will be the Intel graphics that controls the laptop screen, unless program graphics performance requirements (as determined by the firmware) find that nVidia is required.  Additionally, you can use nVidia Control panel to theoretically "force" nVidia graphics for specific program windows, but in my experience that doesn't seem to work consistently.

But this very precise choice in the BIOS where the machine actually behaved exactly a... Read more

Hi All,  I recently got two 1920x1080 monitors and have been attempting to hook them up to my Thunderbolt 3 dock and X1 Carbon with no success. All firmware has been updated, and the dock detects each display individually, when the other is disconnected and reconnected. Everything else works on the dock with no issues.  Thanks.

I have an HP Spectre X360, an Apple Thunderbolt display, and a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt adapter. When I plug the adapter into the Spectre's USB-C port, Windows gives a "USB device not recognized" error. Has anyone been able to get this kind of setup to work? I found a similar issue (http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/Apple-Thunderbolt-display-with-S...) that suggests there's a problem with the HP firmware where it won't work with older thunderbolt displays. And in that thread, HP released a firmware configuration utility to make this work. But when I try to run this utility on my device, it says that it doesn't support this computer.

When I have my WiFi connected to a 2.4GHz wireless router my display (connected to Thunderbolt 3 StarTech HDMI connector) disconnects frequently.  Both the monitor connected to the Thunderbolt 3 and the laptop monitor flash 2-3 times and then comes back and starts working again.  And then it repeats again minutes later... and again... and again
If I change to a 5GHz wireless router... then everything works great.
Please help

I just started having this problem today.  Updated to the latest firmware a few days back on this 150w Thunderbolt Dock P5Q58UT#ABA per the e-mail "Critical Driver Alert - Apr 12 2017 HP Thunderbolt 3 Dock Firmware (ver 1.12 Rev.A)".  Today when plugging in my secondary display is corrupted.  To note I have two of the same docks, one at home and one at work with different monitors in each location.  I'm getting the same issue in both locations.  I don't think two docks went bad and the thunderbolt ports appear to be functioning.  Is there a way to rollback the firmware on these docks to see if that's the issue?   If not what are the next steps to resolve, any advice?  The normal troubleshooting steps on HP.com don't appear to address this.  Pics attached.

After naviging through HPs cryptic support website I found one firmware that was out of date.  After I updated the  Thunderbolt 3 Dock firmware the monitor started working right for now.  We will see...

They WORK!
My new 2017 Dell XPS-13 2-in-1 arrived today and just finished testing it with our Apple Thunderbolt Displays & new Apple Thunderbolt Adapter ($29). Plugged it (adapter / mini-dp pigtail) into the LEFT USB-C port and monitor sprang to life without any issues. The LEFT port appears to have a higher class of protocol extensions. The Dell also works in "lid-closed" condition, but requires an "open-shut" to activate sleep after disconnecting.
We also have a Acer R240Hy Usb-C display which works (charge/video) from both ports. The LEFT port is smooth for FHD, but the RIGHT usb-c has drops under FHD.
