cd/dvd writing problem with most programs

Q: cd/dvd writing problem with most programs

i have been having a lot of issues with cd and dvd backups. i have been using nero as my main burning program and Ulead sometimes too(both these programs were in a pack when i bought my dvd/cd writer). lately when i try to use nero to do anything[copy dvd, data dvd/cd, mp3 cd, audio cd, etc], i open the nero start smart utility and select the task i want...then it loads for a few seconds and i get a message that the program has un expectedly quit, windows is sorry, etc.

so i figure ill use another program....he is a few i have trialed....and the results:
- Windows media Player: Opens fine, plays music and videos fine, but when i try to write a cd, it freezes and is "Not Responding"
-Ulead: opens Movie Factory Media Center, but when i select a task the program is "Not Responding" and i cannot shut it, even in task manager.
-Power2Go: Similar to ulead...open task console, but when i select a task the program is "Not Responding" and cant be shut in task manager either.
-CloneCD: Same as above....however, when i select copy disk. the program runs fine only if there is no cd/dvd in the drive. If i put the disk in the drive, then try to run the program, it stops responing. but if i wait until the programs asks for the disk, then put it in the writer, it works ok. i have tried this approach on the other programs too, but it doesnt help.

Nero and Ulead both used to work fine, without any problems. i have not installed any new hardware lately, and i have PC-Cillin and AVG and they both say my system is clean.

im running XP, 3gig CPU, 1gig RAM and an 80 gig HDD. The CD/DVD Writer is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-108.

Any help is much appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I just purchased a Pioneer DVR-112D DVD burner for my PC. I bought it OEM from NewEgg, so it did not come with any software. I am new to the whole DVD burning thing. Right now I just want to be able to burn data for backups and create movies/slideshows from my digital camcorder and camera.

I have played with Windows Movie Maker 2, and I know that it is not directly able to burn to DVD, but that some software can convert the output of MM2 to DVD format.

Of course I love freeware, but would be willing to pay for an all-in-one suite (Nero, Roxio, etc), if it is worth the money. Upon searching the forums, I have stumbled on recommendations for DeepBurner for data, and DVD Flick for media.

What are some good movie making programs? I currently only have 512 MB of RAM, so that may be an issue. I would rather try before I buy to make sure that I like the way they turn out before pony up.

Is it best to diversify and get a good movie making ONLY program rather than one that comes in a suite of burning tools, and then use something basic (free perhaps) to burn straight data?

I recently tried to install 'pfport checker' and it failed on multiple attempts, then I installed it on an external HDD and it worked successfully. The error was something along the lines of 'disk writing error, please retry'. I thought it was just the software but after trying to install some other software it comes up with errors. On a previous Windows installation it worked. I assume it is a disk writing error.

Error: 'Can't write. C:\Windows\syswow64\drivers\anyDVD.sys.tmp'

That is an example of the issue.

There must be some mechanism that windows provides that allows an application programmed in whatever language to interface with other programs running on the same computer.

Specifically, I will be beginning a project soon in which I have to program in C# an application that reads from a dxf file and produces a plan/model from it in AutoCAD. It needs to communicate with AutoCAD and send it instructions (ex. draw line, make face, create new layer, etc.).

Does Windows have resources/mechanisms that allow one to do this?

Need constructive advice in how to proceed. Using " show hidden " I've found folder after folder of different versions of Linux software programs, icons used for posing as official sites, a binary code writer? Multiple programs, tracking down the areas files are hidden, I've found the items that are written into my registry that prevent me from editing it. Whomever this is went far enough to allow it to appear that I can edit my registry, but nothing saves. I'm locked out in virtually every way from ultimate admin permission. I even found a four page document that touts my computers processors efficiency, best times to use programs, battery serial numbers, information about other computers in its group that connect. I've been researching, I've documented all the spots I'd have to write over in the registry, but lack the control. Should I report this to someone instead, as of yet I have not shut down who ever this is, except to turn off pc and shut off internet when I'm not monitoring it.
I had spyware issues recently, but solved them. Mc##e is useless unless paid more money.

Hi - have you AHCI enabled in the bios? If so it could be the driver Microsoft installs automatically during install - to fix this go to the below site and download and install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver if you haven't already installed it.
I think its updated with the chipset drivers now, so you could update them firstly, and see if that fixes the problem if not install the rapid storage driver - available on the same support page below.

You could try this microsoft fix if you have the rapid storage driver already installed assuming its suitable :

I run a Pentium 4 with XP Professional. It came with Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.2 installed but I've never got around to using Roxio. I can play music CDs OK via Windows Media Player.

Realised I should be backing up my HD and tried to backup onto a CD-R with no joy so tried a CD-RW - no joy. Went and bought new CD-RWs in case the disks were at fault but still no joy.

Eventually found out that the Roxio version that I have can't be used on XP Professional so downloaded Nero 7 Demo. Still getting same messages.

When I try to copy I get a couple of different messages:
"Buffer underrun protection activated" and shows Type of disk in recorder: Empty
"Waiting for disc - Please insert disk to write to"

And previously got "Unrecognised data" and "insufficient space left" but it's a blank disk.

I've tried using Nero to do a quick erase but the Erase option isn't highlighted so can't.

I'm obviously missing something really basic ... anyone any ideas? I've attached aerror log in case this is of help.

Also, do I have to format all new disks before using and, if so, anyone know how to format using Nero 7 demo?

Many thanks.

A:Problem Writing To Cd-r Or Cd-rw

Hi Denise. Roxio and Nero don't like to cohabitate (I found out the hard way). Uninstall both of them for the time being.Download and run XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip and unzip the contents. Run the EXE file. Reinstall Nero. If this doesn't work you could try using an inexpensive optical drive cleaning disk available at large retailers and computer shops.---------------------------There are 2 ways to store data on a RW disk. The first way is to burn to it like it is a CD-R and then erase the whole disc to reuse it. The other way is to use Nero's InCD driver to format the CD-RW. This will allow you to treat the disc as a 500MB removeable disc in which you can add and remove files and folders in Explorer as if it was a gigantic floppy. Only computers running InCD will be able to write to the disc.

I have a Blue-Ray Drive on my HP-G70 120. I am running on WIndows 7. Recently, my blue-ray drive has been disturbing a lot. I wrote to CDs and DVDs before, and it worked fine. Also, I can read from the discs, so I dont think there is a problem with the laser, rather I suspect some problem with the software.

My Problems are:
Clicking on the drive icon says its a blank disc, though the disc is not.
While at other times, ejecting the drive from windows or from the button says "An error occurred while ejecting BD-ROM". At other times it ejects fine.
I burned some files onto a CD that already had 80MB written on it, using BurnAware. Now, after burning, only the previous (80MB) are present there, but no sign of the newest write. Also, it shows "0 bytes free of 80MB" when clicking properties on the drive icon in Windows Explorer.

So How do I fix these problems?

Thank You

You might want to try installing any updated drivers from the HP website.

That is a direct link for drivers for your FN keys. Try it and let me know how it works.

How long has the problem been occurring? If it just started happening, you may try to do a system restore. Make sure all of your personal files are backed up just in case of an error.

I searched here and there a lot and still wondering is it a problem with sp3 or the dvd rw driver which mine is SONY DVD RW DRU 830A or it is a problem pertaining to the softwares that I use kike NERO, DVD Shrink. At present none of the copying and burning softwares cannot write in dvd driver.

A:XP SP3 and writing problem in DVD RW

It is XP SP3 that is causing your problem. I have a Sony DRU 710A that stopped working after I installed XP SP3. It would not recognize any blank DVD media with Roxio or Nero. I pulled the drive out and put it in another machine that only had XP SP1 installed. The drive worked great. I then installed SP3 and the drive quit working again. I then uninstalled SP3 and the drive started working again. Microsoft needs to fix this problem. I hope someone can put enough pressure on them to fix this issue.

I'm looking for help with a problem getting my DVD writer to recognise blank DVDs.

I can read and write CDs no problem and the drive will read already written DVDs(films, software etc). However when I insert a blank DVD the drive just keeps trying to access(green light on drive keeps flashing and drive is spinning) the DVD.

I am using DVD+R discs and have never had a problem in the past.

The drive is an Emprex 16X dual layer reader/writer. I have run the driver update and apparently the drivers are the most recent.

It may something simple or the drive might be just broken, but any help, advice or info would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance for help someone might offer!

I have a hunch my secondary drive is dying (been with me through 2 systems/5+ years) and would like to move all the data from it to a CD. Using Easy CD Creator it tells me something about the data being written too fast so it could not be written to the CD.

Any idea that I have a CD/RW problem or something else? I replaced the power supply last night hoping the terrible loud noise would go away (didn't - must be the hard drive), and will try the CD write again this afternoon. But I thought someone might have another idea for me in case this doesn't work.

Happy Saturday!

A:CD/RW problem - writing too fast?

the horrible loud noise is likely a fan clogged with dust and chattering, though it could be the HDD and if it is, you should attend to it before you lose everything.

As for the CDRW, try burning at slower speeds, also check the cables, disconnect them and reconnect them to make certain they have proper connection. Might also be a buffering problem, or it could be a problem with the burning app.

I have a problem with MS CD Writing Wizard with Windows XP, SP2.

When I try to burn a CD with the option "Automatically eject the CD after

I believe I have a virus on my PC. There were 100's up popups all over my screen. The day prior I had removed Norton Internet Security, installed Zone Alarm.. and had intended to return the following day and install Avast. but.. unfortunately I didn't get to before this happened.

I'm able to boot up in safe mode and tried a system restore to the prior day (to the problem) but upon rebooting my screen went black after the windows loading screen. Now, I guess system restore doesn't solve problems like this, but in the past it'd fixed anything I'd done before.

Rebooted again into safe mode and all my files are there. Is there a way to copy files in safe mode to dvd or cd? or fix the problem?

If I have to reinstall the OS, I must retrieve some pictures that hadn't been backed up.

Hi folks

I have a horrible problem which is doing my tit in.

I just brought a pioneer dvr109. In the Uk this drive has received good reviews so i decided to buy it. I brought an oem version of dabs.com.

Now when i received this it had a fireware already on which was version 1.19 and i looked on pioneers website and there was another firmware update which was 1.40 which was only released in march. so i updated and it hasnt seemed to have sorted problem out.

The DVD rewriting side seems to be fine.

but for cd-rs i am having problems.

I use TDK cdr80 disks which can burn up to 52X. now i know my drive will only burn up to 40X which is fine, but when i used nero, which is version. I can only burn at 4X.

does anyone know why this is.

I thought problems like these sorted them selves out with firmware, but i dont think it has.

I have tried the same brand but with numerious disks and have had no luck. b4 i did the update i was also using infiniti cdr-80 disks on a spindle. and these would burn up to 32X. but since the update these will only burn at 4X.

can anyone help, is there any issue with this drive, is it my nero version?

any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Djtheninja. Welcome to the Forum.

You can get that error message if you have bad media (defective CDs or DVD's)

To get out of the optical drive freeze just restart Windows. Eject the disk when the computer begins to restart.

Then try the burn with another disk. Keep in mind that if you bought a pack of cheap disks there could be many that are no good.

I use nero experss Whenever I write cds in 10x or more speed the buffer level(not read buffer) keeps falling suddenly. And if i write at more than 10x buffer level acts the same and after a few minutes writing about 50 %(approx) shows write error and stops .When the buffer level falls the HDD LED also stops blinking for a few seconds. This thing has wasted my many blank CDs.
So now I am forced to write CDs at 10x which takes a lot of time.

Please help

Good Afternoon miltus_31, as you are aware the burn laser deteriorates with useage.
Your description is kind of inline with "old age".
Rather than get too involved with troubleshooting and changing things, if the machine has burned more than a couple of spindles of blanks successfully over a period it may be more productive to try a new burner.
There is nothing worse than having an important burn that wont!

I have just recently installed Windows 7 on it and everything works fine so far but when i try to write files to a cd with windows dvd maker that comes with windows 7, it tells me that "The video card installed on this computer doesn't meet the minimum system requirements for Windows DVD Maker." What should I do? I have an Intel 915GM. Thanks for your help in advance. Glad to have a Windows 7 forum.

There's no video driver for Vista or 7 so it seems you're out of luck.

A:Problem writing data to dvd

Hello samrat and welcome to TSF !

We'll need more informations. What kind of data are you trying to write ? Did you make sure the file wasn't too big to hold on a DVD ? Were you able to burn other DVD's properly ?

What's the brand and model of the DVD writer and what burning program do you use ?

XP CD writing wizard writes files to CD. I get the message 'Your files have been successfully written to the CD'. The tray opens upon completion. When I close everything out an try to read CD contents from Windows Explorer it shows empty! I have tried the trouble shooter, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the CD driver all to no avail. When I burn files to the CD from Nero Express everything works fine. After this burn I can read the file OK from Windows Explorer. What gives? Am at my wits end. Any help appreciated.

Then, why can't you use Nero Express? Sometimes. when more than one burning software is installed, their drivers conflict.

Have you installed any other CD or DVD software? Have you uninstalled any?

I have an OPTORITE 48x16x48 CD-RW drive, CW4802, running Win ME. It seems to write to CD-Rs and CD-RWs that are the regular density 650MB, 74 minute types. However, it balks a lot and gives me a generic error telling me the media is damaged or has scratches or the software is bad, etc. whenever I use 700MB CD-RWs.

I updated the firmware to the latest version, but it wasn't far behind anyway.

I am using new (never written to) Memorex disks. Any tips or fixes on how to overcome this problem would be appreciated.

This is a long story...

I had a new Teac CDW and an old HP CDW on my machine.
Both were working perfect with Nero 5.5.
Until I realize that my new Teac W552E had a manufacturing defect. So I removed it and sent it back to the service center.

Now I'm left with the old one. At first the computer said ATAPI uncampatible at every reboot. I connected to the secondary master cable, in place of the new Teac drive, then I changed the BIOS to set secondary master (the HP drive) to Auto and Non-installed to secondary master where the old HP was previousely.
Now, I don't have this Atapi warning.

My HP drive is detected and is able to read CD-R(W) from any application, including WExplorer and Nero.

When I started to burn to CDR-W, Nero shows "HP drive time out" (or something like that), then Nero freeze.
It doesn't seem to write anymore...

I don't think it's a problem of software since it's exactely the same system/config/installation as 2 weeks ago when I removed the new Teac drive.

I'd rather think that it can be a BIOS or a cable connection problem or that the HP drive is dead...

Any suggestion?

This may not pertain to your problem but have you tried lowering the write speed down a bit? I find that some CD's within the memorex line and TDK line even thought they say 48x compatable or Multi Speed they balk at 700's. Another thought would be to hold your storage down to 650 to 675MB vs all of the 700.

Just some thoughts.
