I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So, I get a call that this domain username is giving invalid password. Of course, like any other tech, I assume that the user is putting in the password wrong, so I get into the remote access for the computer. I put in the password. No dice.

I log into another computer in the same area, log in with the username and password, logs in without issue. Go back to the offender and log in with an admin domain account, no issue. So, now, I've blown out everything related to this user account, removed and readded it to the valid user list, nuked and deleted the user profile by deleting from profile list, physically deleting the profile, and making sure that the profile wasn't in the registry. Still no dice. I even tried removing and readding to the domain just to say I did it. Any thoughts?

I've read through pages and pages of search results for this, but they all seem to be between Win7 and XP, or something not quite the same as my problem.

Here at home we are all using Windows 7 (a mix of Home Premium and Ultimate). I have an HTPC which has all our DVDs on. This PC has a few shares so we can access our movies across the network.

I have set up the shares using the Sharing Wizard thing, and set 'Everyone' to Read/Write. I can verify the permissions for the shares in Advanced Sharing > Permissions, and see that 'Everyone' has full control.

In the Network and Sharing Center, the settings for sharing are as follows:Network discovery = ON
File and printer sharing = ON
Public folder sharing = OFF (no need for it)
Media streaming = ON (for WMP, Xbox)
Use 128-bit encryption = ON
Password protected sharing = OFF
Allow Windows to manage Homegroup connections = ON
I should point out after the last bullet point that we are not using a Homegroup.

So with all that as it is, whenever I try to connect to the HTPC shares from another computer, I still get prompted for a username and password, with the "X Invalid user name and password" message beneath the text boxes. I can, however, connect without a problem from my laptop, which has the same username and password as the admin account on the HTPC.

The strange thing now - if I type "anonymous" into the username box and try to connect, I get in. Everything then works as it should. So either all... Read more

A:Password protected sharing is OFF, still asked for username/password?

You might want to check that the time/date settings are correct on the HTPC. If they aren't correct on one of your machines it will give you a password prompt as you described.

Also under power options, make sure that it's not set to require a password when coming out of sleep state.

Go to Control Panel, then Power Options "look upper left side". Click "Require a password on wakeup".

Select the radio button "Don't Require a Password" and then Save Changes. Your done.

2 days ago I upgraded my laptop from Vista to Windows 8, I didn't have the router network password handy so I skipped that. I set up a new Microsoft account because I didn't have one and I was able to use the laptop for a while. After shutting down for the night I was unable to get back in (it wouldn't accept my password). I reset the password and verified that the new password worked by signing into my MS account on another computer. I connected the laptop to my router with a cable but it still would not accept my MS password. Many hours later, I did manage to get in and thought the problem was resolved.

Today: still connected by cable, laptop won't accept the MS password.

If I ever get back in I'll set it up so that I don't need to go through an MS account but I need to get in first.

Any suggestions?

Just posted this and tried again and suddenly I can get in - very confusing

Just bought a new laptop Install seemed to be going well until I entered the wrong password for Wireless Network Chose to do a recovery to try to solve that issue. Upon restarting, my password was no longer accepted, although the password hint was still there. Not sure if the problem has to do with the fact that I performed a recovery, or because I somehow entered the wrong password twice during initial setup, or perhaps there's a finite number of password attempts that Windows 7 allows before it locks you out, because I've tried about 200 versions of my password Can anyone help?

Running XP Home SP3.

Last week the PC began asking for an Administrative password shortly after I turned it on. I was just a black screen with a smallish black box outlined in white. I'd never even heard of such a thing so I asked a friend who know computers to take a look. He told me that the system wanted some sort of password that had been entered into the BIOS settings. I told him that we'd never set up anything like that, and asked if he could get around it.

He took a small battery out of the PC, and left it out for about 30 minutes. When he put it back, it no longer asked for that password, but when it booted to windows, it did not bring up my desktop. It went to a signon page with the name Guest. And only that name. It did not show my user name (which is Mike), or show my desktop. It also wanted a password for Guest.

Since I have no password on my system, I had no idea. We left it blank, but it brought up a message box reading

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted
Please try again or consult your system administrator.

My friend booted into safe mode, where we got essentially the same result, except that this time the user was Administrator. No other users on the page. And once again it asked for a password.

He went home and got a disk called ERD and booted from that, and then went into some utility from the start menu that would allow him to reset the passwords. He reset both Guest and Administrator, and showed me that t... Read more

Hi,

My netbook - a Toshiba nb305 - is inexplicably not accepting my password, nor that of my wife's who has a separate user account. We know the passwords we're inputting are correct, so have no explanation. We have ensured that the CAPS lock and NUM locks are off (and we've tried entering passwords with them on) so that's not the problem. I'm presently holidaying in Greece, and the netbook was working perfectly on the plane journey over here. Came to use it in the hotel, and it is having this problem. Tried starting in Safe Mode also but same problem occurs. Any help you could give me would be GREATLY appreciated.

I have a new Windows 7 64 bit laptop which I have successfully connected to my home wlan and it can access the web just fine.
The home wlan is wpa protected and behind a router.

The new laptop can see the other Windows 7 PC (old_pc) in the home wlan and when I double click on the "old_pc" icon in Network it opens it and asks for a username and network password.

Problem:
When I enter the name of a user on the other PC and its logon password I get an error message saying the the user or password is wrong. But, it is how I logon the other PC!

I checked and the "old_pc" does have its printers shared (and that is what I am trying to access from the new PC) so that is not the problem.

What do I do? What am doing wrong?

Thanks.

A:Can't Log On With My Username/Password

You can reset any password by going through the following steps. The process is involved and requires some careful typing. Ask a computer-savvy friend to assist you if you lack experience in this area.
1. Set your BIOS to use the DVD drive as the primary boot device.
2. Boot with a Windows Repair CD.
3. Press a key when the message indicating "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD ?" appears.
4. Select a language, a time and currency, and a keyboard or input method, and then click Next. You are now in Repair Mode.
5. Select an Operating System, then click Next.
6. Select the Command Prompt.
7. Identify the correct drive letter for your Windows installation. It could be a drive other than C: but it won't be X:. You do it by typing the commands
dir C:\Win* {Enter}
dir D:\Win* {Enter}
dir E:\Win* {Enter}
etc.
until you find the Windows folder.
I will call that drive "Q:".
8. Type these commands:
cd /d Q:\windows\System32 {Enter}
move sethc.exe \ {Enter}
copy cmd.exe sethc.exe {Enter}
9. Reboot normally but hold down the Shift key permanently.
10. When challenged for a password, tap the Shift key five times. You will see a small black screen.
11. Type these commands:
net user {Enter}
(To see a list of all accounts that exist on your machine)
net user Administrator {Enter}
(To see if the Administrator account is active)
12. Type these commands:
net user "xxx&q... Read more

Add a shortcut on the desktop: shutdown /s /t 10 That will shutdown the computer in 10 seconds. You can make it /t 0 if you want it to shutdown immediately.

To make the computer automatically logon a specific account, do this:

Press WinKey+r
Type control userpasswords2 and press Enter
Select the account you want to automatically login, uncheck User must enter a user name and password to use this computer and click the Apply button.
In the Automatically Log On window, enter the password if there is one, leave blank otherwise and click OK.
Click Apply and OK to close the User Accounts window.

Now when the computer boots, the account you picked will automatically logon.

I can get access to the control panel on the Sony and enter the Administrator username and password which
then allows me to use the control panel and change or setup new users and folders.

I think it may be something to do with the way Windows 8 transmits the username and password.

Anybody got any ideas as am stuck.

Hello,

this has been driving me bonkers for the last few days, I check forums and websites but have not found any answers. I have a laptop with XP Pro on which I regularly update my password, the ctlr+alt+del > change password way.

When I tried this ealier last week I got a message saying (translating from Dutch to English): my password must be 0 characters, cannot repeat any of my 0 passwords, must be at least 0 days old.

This is totally new to me, I changed the password before without issues, so my search on the web lead me to gpedit.msc, where I select windows settings, security settings, account policy. There are several entries here and they show (again translated from Dutch to English):

maximum password time: 0
min password time: 0
min password length: 0
remember old passwords: 0
complexity: disabled
something about coding: disabled

so as far as I can tell there is not password policy however when I change my password there seems to be. I have played with this a bit and set complixty to enabled, min length to 6 and tried to change it to AbCd12! which should work as its >6 long, uses caps, lowercase and numbers, but again the same message, so I set it back to how it was, 0's and disabled.

I also tried net user <username> <newpassword> but getting the same message
the account has admin rights but I logged in as admin and tried to change the password that way for the specific account but again the same message

So right now I am totally lost, ... Read more

A:Solved: XP Pro SP3 - wont accept any new password

I am not certain I am on the right line here.
Firstly, gpedit is GROUP policy Edit and has no connection DIRECTLY with the normal user/admin/guest password.
Retunring to the cmd "net user akm-bl" - realising of course it is not that. This should provide as in my screenshot

To save me a lot of typing if you instruct the cmd
Type 'net user /HELP' for more info.
You will then see what each command is and what is achieved.

However I would recommend you type
"control userpasswords2" - start, run .
as if I am correct you will find what you want there.
On the advanced tab click the advanced button on Advanced user management and explore there in Local users and groups.

Good day, I have a user who has an HP Probook 430 G2 which was shipped with Windows 10 downgradeable to Windows 7Pro. They opted for Windows 8.1, and so the 64 bit version was installed. The user has been working fine for a week. Yesterday he called me saying that his PC would not accept his password. I logged in on Teamviewer (it has Windows Login enabled) and logged in without any problems. Thinking that it may be a stuck key on his keyboard or something, I opened word and asked him to type his password. He typed it both with the normal keyboard and numericals, and again with the numbers which are integrated with the function keys. He also typed it correctly with the USB keyboard which he had connected. I performed an Alt+Ctrl-Del funtion, and changed the password. I tryped in his existing password, and asked him to type in the same password, but with an additional ! at the end, for the new one. He typed in the new password, confirmed it, and it was accepted. I then logged out and asked him to type in his password to log in, it still said the password is incorrect. I tryped in the new password over Teamviewer, it worked. I did a bit of research and found suggestions of performing the reset with the battery and all peripherals removed. I guided him through this this morning, he booted the laptop with nothing attached, just the battery re-inserted. Same thing. This completely baffles me. Please could someone advise me? Thank you.

A:HP Probook 430 [email protected] won't accept password on laptop, but will ...

This is a new one on me I could help you via teamviewer if you want me to just message me. Anyways back to your problem there could be some sort of virus on the computer which is making it play up you may need to do a scan just to be safe? Also what happens if you create a new user instead of password do it that way? Also using windows 8.1 you can upgrade to windows 10 and use a numeric password to do that be so much easier then typing it. This is the only thing I could think of its really strange. You could try logging into the adminsitrator and try that see if it still does it then? Or is iit only on that account?  Thanks hope I helped a little bit.

(Using Windows 7 Home.) I got a whole mess of suspicious spam, figured I'd better change my Thunderbird password (primary email.) I followed the instructions online: tools-security-saved passwords- show passwords- remove, then next time you send or receive email, you'll be prompted with a request for new password. I did that, entered the new one, said "save password," and I can see the two new passwords (same for each, incoming and smpt; I was told that's what it does and it did that), but every time I send a message it says "Sending of password for user XXXX did not succeed. Mail server pop.cox.net responded: invalid user name or password."

Please help.....I'm crippled with email right now......

A:Thunderbird email will not accept new password

I also get the message
"Sending of the message failed.
The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.cox.net for an unknown reason. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again."
