Preferred Solution: Cortana option won't work, hey cortana stop to work.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Good news so far Sara.

Open Settings, click on Privacy icon, click on Contacts in left pane, and check to see if "Let apps access my contacts" is turned on, and turned on for Cortana if listed.

Hi, if I launch Cortana (Windows key + S), click the music icon top right, and play something, Cortana 'listens' and may identify and find it. Great.

However, here's an example: I played Concerto no. 4 in A major - 1. Allegro by Albinoni.

Cortana identified it, and I clicked on the title/text displayed (there was also a greyed out headphone symbol).

This took me to the Store, which displayed this:
Oh. Shame.

Now neither the text in Cortana nor that shown in Store can be selected and copied. Which is a shame if you want to use the information found. So I used Abbyy's screenshot reader to pick out
albinoni: concerto a 5
and searched for that in the Store. Then the Store search found it. (Of course this is another ploy by MS to earn revenue..)

The identification is good, the inability to copy the text isn't, and the lack of integration between the Store and Cortana seems poor.

However, everything worked perfectly for a Chinese pop song by Wang Fei.

So I'm curious.. is your experience better?

My laptop is Dell Inspiron 15R - 7520 (Mid 2010)
After upgrading to Windows 10 and do a clean install after that, I let my laptop update all drivers from Windows Update. Then I go to Dell support page to download any missing driver. Finally, there is no unregconized driver in Device Manager.

However, "Hey Cortana" feature is not working with the microphone. (I have turned on Hey Cortana in Cortana Settings). The microphone still works well with Skype. It also works well if I click the microphone icon next to "Ask me anything" in Cortana textbox.

Anyone knows how to make "Hey Cortana" works? Is it because of the Conexant driver is Windows 8.1 version, not Windows 10?

A:Dell Inspiron 15R - 7520: Hey Cortana does not work

I have the same problem, except that it doesn`t work for me when I click the microphone icon in the Cortana textbox. It seems to listen for a second, but then it jumps to the suggestions like I didn`t say anything. I have the audio drivers for Windows 10 from the Dell support page. My voice works fine on Skype and Voice Recorder, though.

Please let us know if there is any progress.

A few days ago, I upgraded my Windows 7 laptop to Windows 10 and took Cortana for a bit of a test drive. It wasn't great but it might be useful on some occasions.

Today, I bought a brand new laptop which installed Windows 10 when I powered it on. After the installation, I was checking things out a bit and wanted to verify that Cortana was working on the new laptop. Cortana promptly told me it was not available in this region!

This makes no sense to me. I was in Southern Ontario, Canada, both times (although in different cities within the area). I can't believe that Cortana would work in London Ontario but NOT in Kitchener Ontario, which is only an hour east of London.

Does anyone have any idea how I can coax Cortana to work on the new laptop? It's not that it's a must-have app for me but it *might* be useful on occasion or even fairly often if I give it half a chance.

A:Cortana won't work on new computer; works fine on older one.

Hi, have a look at this and see if you can solve your problem.

Cortana isn't supported in the region or language you've selected. - Windows 10 Forums

Win 10 is a bit delicate and can be sensitive to some settings being changed.
There will be other posts discussing this problem- it's not uncommon.

First, I'd like to point out that I found and read this thread that, in the last post, tells me how to disable Cortana. https://techguy.org/1185771

But for me, that is not enough. I want her file gone completely. I opened the file location and moved Cortana's file onto my desktop. I've yet to delete it because I don't know what harm could or could not happen.

That being said, let me tell you about my laptop, in case that makes any difference.
My laptop is a SonicMaster by Asus, E403S Series (the biggest piece of sh*t that I will NEVER buy again. SO MANY PROBLEMS.)

If any more laptop info is needed, let me know. While I'm considered the tech guru of my house, all of this is way beyond my head.

When I got up this morning my pc was off for some reason,  it is set to not turn off as I am running a backup to crashplan and it has a week left, when I turned it back on my Start button doesn't work  and neither does Cortana  all it does it make my cursor spin and when I clicked on Microsoft edge button nothing happened and then the icon disappeared from task bar. Not all of my icons are showing up on desktop or taskbar either. Weird things have been happening the past few days.. it all started after installing Malwarebytes, not saying that caused it but, that's when it all started except Mcafee keeps popping up every 30minutes  with  it quarantined  Browsefox-FAD  that started a few days before everything else. I had another forum try helping me, they said my google chrome was exploited so we did that fix, but, I cant reinstall it it says it does, but, it didn't... That's not a biggie as I never used it, it was for a backup when my other Browsers were acting up. I also uninstalled Malwarebytes, but that didn't work.

I am running Windows 10 Home 64 bit OS....

Afternoon,

I have two system services that I would like to disable but they are not listed in the windows 10 service list. The first one is Cortana, which from my understanding has to deal with camera, touchscreens and microphones which I use none of those.

The second service is Microsoft Skype Host which I do not have Skype installed on my machine so it is just taking up memory and disk space.

Is there any way to disable these services???

Thanks in Advance.

A:How to stop Cortana and Skype host from starting

Cortana is basically Windows Search, so if you do not need it, proceed:

Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Take ownership of this folder and then remove it or just rename SearchUI.exe:
C:/Windows/SystemApps/Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy
You will be notified, that it can not be done, just close SearchUI.exe, you will have 2-3 secs before it starts again.

Not sure about Skype, I have it disabled, uninstall Skype in apps and disable Skype's startup in Autoruns, if it is there.

Hi All,
I've got a system here which is acting up and I'm looking for ideas of how to resolve. Specs are:

Windows 10 Home (upgraded from W8.1)
i7-3632 8GB RAM 64bit
Inspiron 17R5720 laptop

Here's the problem: Everything works fine upon boot, but then, something happens over time, and things stop working.

Start left-click not working/Start right-click works
Notification left-click not working/Notification right-click menu shows, but open action center doesn't work
Quick Launch opens and works
All icons pinned to the taskbar work including File Explorer
Cortana and search not working - can't type in box
Speaker icon left-click does not work, right-click does

This is all intermittent, and resolved with a reboot.

Something sets it off to stop working - perhaps the screensaver/lockscreen?

Fast Startup is off, hybernate off as well.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated. TIA.

Hi, I'll assume all is sound e.g. chkdsk, SFC show no problems.

Have you tried a clean boot to see if the symptoms recur?
And if so, Safe Mode?

I.e. start to identify potential conflicts.

Is there a way to stop the middle mouse button (i.e. click of the scroll wheel) from opening Cortana/search?

Things I've tried:

1. Searched Google. No useful results. The closest I found was that Windows 10 may be confusing the click of the middle mouse button as the 3-finger tap on the touchpad - which opens Cortana/search by the default. But I don't have a touch pad. I have the Toshiba PX30T (Toshiba Qosmio PX30t 23 inch Touchscreen All-in-One PC - Black/Silver (Intel Core i3 3120M 2.5GHz Processor, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, DVDSM DL, LAN, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Integrated Graphics, Windows 8 64-Bit): Amazon.co.uk: Computers Accessories).

2. Tried re-configuring the middle mouse button in (a) Windows 10 Settings > Devices > Mouse & touchpad, (b) Control Panel > Mouse, and (c) my desktop's manufacturer's System Settings utility application (upgraded just now from their website). Interestingly, none of those three configuration tools had any control setting for the middle mouse button.

It is obvious that Windows 10 doesn't "fully" support the wireless mouse that comes with my PC.

My question then is...

Is there a way to "unbind" the middle mouse button from opening Cortana/search? For example, via the Registry Editor - maybe?

Thanks for any replies!

I would like to add some info here as I had the above problem, and couldn't find the answer anywhere except on a site that wanted money! Aaargh! The nerve of it!

But I saw a topic here with the exact same problem, although the solution was quite different. (Here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/944096-taskkill-does-not-work-batch.html )

I can't recall now why I thought about the firewall, but as you guys have helped me in the past, I'd like to leave some information here for people who Google the following problems and think they have found a site with a solution, only to find that the site wants your credit card number. Bah!

Here are the errors I had:

1. Net stop: System Error 5 has occurred. Access is Denied

2. Tasklist or Taskkill: The RPC server is unavailable

Both of my problems were caused by the Comodo firewall on a new PC running XP SP3.
The startup command file calls various other command files and I got the above errors when they executed the Net, Taskkill and Tasklist commands.

When I entered the commands (net stop, taskkill, tasklist) at a command prompt, they worked.

The problem was because the Comodo firewall had a "Defence +" setting for a "Sandbox" that was enabled.
When I disabled the sandbox, everything worked as I expected, i.e. as on my old PC that I was replacing.

I hope this helps someone in the future.

Q: Cortana

Have searched but can not find a clear answer. Will Cortana open websites? From what I read, it will providing the website is bookmarked and pinned. Is this correct?
If the website requires login, eg eBay, will Cortana do the login for you? Since Edge will be able to save usernames and passwords, it seems possible. Eg, can I say "Hey Cortana, open eBay" and the eBay login page opens. Then can I say, "Hey Cortana, login to eBay" or will I have to click the login button?
I am asking this for my visually impaired friend. I am wondering if Win 10 with Edge and Cortana could help him. Thanks.

A:Cortana

Hi Artbuc From what I can read, Cortana could already open websites by voice on Windows 8.1 for Phone, so I don't know why the Cortana on Windows 10 couldn't do a such thing http://www.windowscentral.com/how-open-websites-voice-cortanaAs for the login, you can use Cortana to login on Facebook apparently, but I don't know for the other websites.https://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/how-to/wp8/cortana/cortanas-settingsAlso, saving passwords locally in a browser is a security risk, so I wouldn't do that. I would use a password manager instead like LastPass.

I've just activated Cortana but not having much luck.

Is there a guide anywhere as to what can/can't be done with the app?

For example, I added some things to my calendar, and asked if there was anything in there for today (both spoken and typed question).

When spoken, all I get in response is: 'Something's not right. Try again in a little bit'.

When typed, a search is performed, but no documents are found.

It's quite possible I'm totally misunderstanding how Cartana works, but I would have thought that searching my calendar would be fairly basic.

Any help appreciated.

Cortana has been extremely glitchy for the past few days; many have posted about it.
I suspect there may be some transitions going on internally in preparation for a new Build. I'm just guessing though.

Q: Cortana

I just got a new computer with Cortana and it was working fine. Within a hour or so I could no longer hear Cortana"s responses. I tried both typing and using the mic. the sound works on everything else on my computer. What happened and how can I fix
it? Thanks.

This Cortana feature seems like some kind of joke. Just installed Win10. Now, everytime my laptop goes to sleep, I have to re-boot to get it going again. I asked Cortana why, and the answer came back with a link to the Beatles' "Why Don't We Do It In the Road"...

A:Who is Cortana?

Answer to thread title: Cortana is the name of a fictional character in the Halo video game.

Now as to your question on it/her, in Windows 10, Cortana is a web search/system & folder search tool, that can be used by voice or text(typing). Like any search tool, you need to be more specific, and if using voice, Cortana needs to be trained. Also when cleaning your system(browser and OS) you need to make sure you DO NOT clean MS search or browser history, so Cortana can learn your interest's, and you can benefit from the advanced search algorithm.

Firstly I hope you all had a fab Christmas, my heart goes out to those victims of the flooding in the Northern parts of England.

So, to my question. How many of you use/have Cortana enabled on Windows 10?

Hope you all have an amazing New Year, let's see what 2016 brings. If your good, I will buy you a Vladimir Putin calendar, I'm trying to get on for my auntie (as a joke!)

Tony

A:Cortana, or not to Cortana?

No, I don't use Cortana for obvious privacy reasons.

I think I'll pass on the Putin calendar.

Hi people,
I've recently installed Windows 10 and was messing around with the tools and settings, especially the search button next to Start. When I looked into Cortana I enabled her to try it out, but it seems I cannot disable her completely. I want the search feature
as how it was when I installed the OS.
Here is a screenshot (https://gyazo.com/6c338cc261adad458f01f2456b08de3f) of how it looks now, and I would like to get it back to default which looks like this (http://imgur.com/a/W2KHt).
I tried these instructions:

1.Left click on Search
box.

2.Click Sandwich
icon on Top left.

3.Click Settings and Turn
off the button under ?Do you want Cortana to work for you??

This will turn off Cortana on your user profile. If you want to remove Search box in taskbar, right click on taskbar and
click Search and choose Disabled.

But there isn't a "Turn off" feature anywhere to be found. Any help is appreciated!

I have only had W10 for a few days and it's keeping me entertained.
I just used Cortana. I said "I can't install windows updates"
This is where Cortana took me. I don't need a dictionary any more.
You might think this isn't all the great, but to a old man it's pretty impressive. I now have someone with a very sweet voice to talk to and she is very nice. She said she liked me. How cool is that??
I recommend giving W10 a try. You have 30 days to try it and then roll back if you don't like it. I recommend the clean install rather then the upgrade.

Did the anniversary update and it removed Cortana, Microsoft support is useless . it is still in the all app list but when i click on it all i can do is search windows files

A:Cortana gone

It has been reported already.

Start your regedit, go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search

find key

BingSearchEnabled

and set it to 1. This should immediately enable your Cortana.
