100% CPU while idle DuckDuckGo

Q: 100% CPU while idle DuckDuckGo

Good evening.

This problem started tonight. My laptop was running fine last night. Today, I noticed that the fan was working hard without stopping. After checking Task Manager, I saw that the CPU usage was 100%, while on idle without any programs running. Running Malwarebytes didn't work, so I tried it on Safe Mode, which came up with nothing. I ran online scanner ESET, also nothing. I ran AdwCleaner and it came up with a PUP. I chose to clean it and it gave me a report. I ran it again but the PUP still came up in the results.

And any address bar internet search is using a "DuckDuckGo" Search engine which I never installed.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey guys, I just entered a word I wanted to search for in Mozilla Firefox and for some reason my search was put through to https://duckduckgo.com?

What happened? Do I have a virus?

Thanks!

A:duckduckgo.com? What is this?

No, it's just an alternate search engine. You probably accidentally changed since it's an available search option in Firefox.

More info on the search engine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DuckDuckGo

Hi,
I tried DDG as my search engine and found that I do not like it.  Problem now is, I cannot uninstall it.  I have removed from search engine list completely and make Google the default once again however when I hit the home button it will always go back to DDG.
I cannot find the process in task manager or control panel.
Any ideas?  I have found the this could possible be some sort of hijack....  Maybe, maybe not?

I will run a Malware scan now.
All help/info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, I downloaded thisusu's jrt and scanned. while scanning, it usually scans and remove the PUPs and malware. I recently tried duckduckgo browser, and searching instead of google search engine, which is storing all the private information. But, after scan, this search engine was removed by JRT. As I downloaded most programs from Bleeping computers, I raise this query.
It seems that thisusu only recognizes the ie,firefox and chrome browsers and removes any other browsers. Of course, the duckduckgo, does not have a separate browser but I think it is a harmless browser, unlike Babylon , incredible , or mysearch browser hijacks. Would any one throw light on it. I do not know how to write in thisusu.org.

A:JRt removes duckduckgo. Why

Hi, I wish to add that the author of the tool has conveyed to improve this in his next version. But i have now a doubt, How to limit the browser of this tool to check the browser. I had the experience of having unwanted browser hijacks, from many of the injected browsers from downloads from different site, including cnet, (even if i select custom installation)
I normally use this tool to remove unwanted PUPs. I do not want thisusu.org to allow the search engine, which they actually do not have like duckduckgo. They occupy a place in the search browser either in ie, ff and chrome as i have already mentioned. What i want to know, whether this search engine is also a kind of PUP or not. that is the crux of the matter. If i say that inclusion of this kind of behaviour, then browser hijackers which are controlled by this wonderful program would attempt to enter thro the exception of so such browsers. I do not know, how thisusu sends a mail to me instead of writing in this forum. This will help many.

I want to add Duckduckgo.com search provider to the list of Search Providers in Manage Add Ons. I am using IE10 and I have looked in help but what I am being told to do does not tie up with what I am seeing on the screen. I think the answer is to get Duckduckgo into the list of Add-ons in the Internet Explorer Gallery but even then I am not sure what to do. Any suggestions please?

Any help would be appreciated.

Firstly, my home page is set up to open in Duckduckgo but it opens in Bing nevertheless. Microsoft Edge sets automatically its default search engine to Microsoft edge and does not allow to reset it to DUckduckgo. Secondly, even if I use Duckduckgo, Microsoft
Edge tracks my loggings. I keep deleting the logging but is there a way to remedy it? Is there enough users to file class action suit for violating users rights ( select engine and privacy issues). Some engines allow to clear all search history upon closing
the browser. Microsoft Edge does not provide this option. Although, Microsoft implies we are using Ducduckgo, they blatantly track us. Where the data go? To NSA?

Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit
Clean installation to windows 7 from Windows XP professional
Hardware 18 months old
OS installed 2 weeks ago

I am currently facing the lovely BSOD error. The computer was recently upgraded from windows XP to Windows 7 enterprise 64bit , this was a fresh installation from XP. The computer originally came with pre installed with Windows 7 installed but was downgraded to XP to meet company IT requirements. We have now been given the go ahead to trial windows 7. However after installation we are now facing issues of very random BSOD moments. Sometimes while using access or excel. At other times the computer could be totally idle. I would like to mention that our IT team upgraded the RAM in the computer from 4gb to 8gb prior to the Windows 7 installation. I do have a feeling that there is an issue with the memory which is causing this issue. I have attached my BSOD zip pack and would be very appreciative if one of the guru's could assist me on the matter.

Thanks

My display turns off (goes to black screen) after 5 minutes idle, even though I have display set to turn off after 30 minutes idle and the computer to sleep after 1 hour idle (this was done under Power Options in the Control Panel). This just started after the last big Microsoft updates were installed 2-3 weeks ago. I can not seem to change this, no matter what my settings are. Both my husband and I installed all the updates, yet his computer is not doing this; he changed all my settings to match his, but my display still turns off after 5 minutes. What's up with this, and how do I get my display to stay on for more than 5 minutes' idle time?

A:Display goes dark after 5 min idle; set to turn off after 30 min idle

This is not a laptop is it ?

Give us the exact make and model of pc.

Check the monitor itself for any sleep settings.

And you set windows to never let the monitor go off, correct ?

First, this really belongs in another forum section. Audio may be affected but its more some system or driver problem.

However, on the sound side, looking at the Device Manager listing, I don't really see a true hardware driver for your PC sound. I see ATI High Definition and NVIDIA High Definition but those are most likely HDMI audio drivers, not PC sound drivers. VIA, according to what I find on the ASUS site is the correct on-board audio.

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5...Desk_Download/

Another Item I see is a wireless adapter. Wi-Fi is a know cause of audio dropout. Disable that or even unplug it if you are not using Wi-Fi. If you are using Wi-Fi, stop and use a wired LAN connection.

The so called driver sites do not always have the latest or even correct drivers. Best to use the ones from the motherboard vendor, or in the case of Intel devices direct from Intel.

Finally, download and run the free Resplendence Latency Mon program. It is much more than the limited DPC Latency Checker program.

a Corsair TX750w power supply
a MSI P35 Neo motherboard
and an X-Blade Case.
I recently realised i had problems with the temp of my cpu , It was idling at around 55-60C so i decided to get some new thermal paste thinking it might fix my problem , however , Even after removing/applying new thermal paste (Arctic cooling silver 5) and reseating the Stock cooler , Im still idling at around 42 up to 53C . Is this normal?
I have an Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 (G0 revision).
What should i do?.

A:53c idle?!

Your processor temp is nothing to be overly concerned about since the thermal spec for your processor is 72C.

If your cooler is seated properly, then I would suspect the higher than average temps may be caused by poor chassis thermal design.

A:Cpu @ 100% @ Idle

http://www.file.net/process/memeoservice.exe.htmlWell, if this service truly is a backup program (and not malware masquerading), I suppose that it could be running all the time. I don't know, I don't use any programs like that...preferring to back up periodically, rather than continuously. This is not a Windows process, from what I read. When using Task Manager, it is normal for System Idle Process to reflect high percentages. This merely means that the CPU is not working hard while running other programs. High percentages are good, not bad.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_idle_processLouis

When I leave my desktop idle for 10+ minutes and then return it's far slower than when I left it. To be frank, it crawls.

I've ditched lots of software I don't need/use, cleaned-up caches, recycle bin, run Registry Mechanic, Registry Booster2, PC Optimize, Ad-ware, Ccleaner, Spybot S&D and de-fragged.

When I CTRl-ALT-DEL the CPU usage shows VM305_STI.exe or sometimes Rundll32.exe hogging it with 95%+ use. I can end the processes but there's no obvious improvement in performance, so what's happening and how can I prevent processes hijacking the CPU when I nip for a cup of tea? Surely there must be a way of restricting usage of the CPU when the user returns - setting priorities? - if so, how.

Hi there. I am using windows 2000 system and I am monitoring my temp using MBM and I noticed when I turn on my computer when I log in to windows my cpu temp rise up to 53 degrees. I live in chicago and my pc is in the basement so its pretty cold out here. My pc has a lots of fan so I know its not the case. Now I used this program CPU idle and after I installed it and rebooted, my pc suddenly drops up to 28 degrees and it still drops (as I was using it today). When I run cpu idle it says that my processor is not supported but it doesnt mean that it can't cool my cpu because its using the HLT command. It worked alright but both my cpu is running 100% .

I am worried that it will do more harm than good. Is it ok to run this software or not? It cools my cpu up to 28 degrees but my cpu usage is always 100%.

Thank You So Much for the time

A:CPU Idle on AMD X2

CPUIDLE is basically for 98/ME, 2K/XP works in a different way, and I don't think they really benefit from CPUIDLE. They should run optimally without such a program, basically that's what the System Idle Task is.

Hi,
My CPU is running high. I have run windows defender, AVG and Adaware but still no response to it.
Occasionally it drops back low but as soon as I open any form of explorer window or plug any USB in it wheels round to 100% again and I get constant "not responding" messages.

last week my email account was hacked and all my contacts got **lovely** emails supposedly from me and I am assuming that this CPU problem is part of that issue.

I cannot restore as I can't find any older restore dates.

I wanted to re-install windows7 but cannot sort out how to remove the "unattend" so I could put the key in that I have on the box.

I have run Resmon. And the hungrier processes show as

Resmon 25%
Explorer NR
Chrome. 15
Sidebar 10
Dwm. 15

This is at idle with chrome not connected to Internet. There arer a few other processes but they are only running at 2-3% each and are all recognisable (system svc host. Etc.)
Closing side bar and other smaller processes does not help it simply makes more space. Simply touching the mouse generates 18% movement.

Any advice welcome.

Within the past month or so I've noticed that both task manager and NVIDIA Monitor show a steady 40% (about 3.3 GB) of RAM is being used, even on desktop with nothing significant running in the background. I can't really think of anything I've changed in my computer recently that would cause this.

I have G.SKILL 4 x 2GB RAM, with 64-bit Vista and an Intel Core2 QX6800. I also have a 1TB HD with 771 GB currently being used out of 921, so I don't know if that would be an issue as well?

I appreciate any help, and if there's any more info you need just say so.

A:Over 3GB of RAM being used on idle.

What sort of level of use were you getting before?

I have 4GB which uses about 1.4-1.8 at idle but then it passes a quite a fair amount off to the pagefile and im on Vista64.

I read somewhere that Vista tries to use memory more than the page file as much as possible. Not sure how true that is.

Have you tried selecting the Memory Usage column in Task Manager to see if you can spot anyhing using a lot?

On the computers I am stuck using are set up to delete user files after the PC is idle for 30 minutes. This means any big downloads I want to do won't have a chance to finish.

I tried opening notepad and leaving a key pressed so it just keeps typing. It worked one time but the past two have worked. When I came back the keyboard wouldn't work until I restarted.

So, does anyone know of a better way to keep the computer from going idle?

Any help is appreciated

Who maintains these systems? You're probably going to have to deal with them.

ok so it is me once again. and yes i am having a problem. Ok so when i go to shutdown, I get this ending program message saying Ending Program: WMS IDLE. it is the message on shutdown that usually says, to end this program immediately click ok. I did happen to come up a forum with this topic that mentioned something about nero causing the problem.
Oh yeah My machine:

Dell Latitude 620
Intel Centrino
1.0GB ram
1.0Mhz
WinXp
Intel 945gm chipset

Yeah I know it is a Dell, But never failed me yet.

A:Wms idle?

Do you have Nero installed on your system? If so, try this:

Open Nero Scout by clicking Start > Programs > Nero > Tools > Nero Scout

On the window at the top left, uncheck "Enable Nero Scout". Close Nero Scout and restart your system. Try shutting down again after your system starts back up.

If this solution didn't work, try this:

Open MSConfig by clicking Start > Run... and then type "msconfig". Press enter.

Click the Startup tab, and then look for a startup item called NMBgMonitor. If you find this item, uncheck it and then click Apply > OK and restart your machine.

Try shutting down again after your system starts back up.

Good luck and hope it helps!

I have noticed that my hard drive is busy doing something even while the computer is idle. I can't figure out what it is. I have turned off indexing, Windows Defender, and my system doesn't come with shadowing. (Windows Home Premium). I don't have any visible background programs running, (no antivirus programs, etc). The system restore is scheduled to happen daily, not all day long every day. Screen savers are turned off. Powering down is turned off. The computer is not connected to the internet.

So what the heck is the computer doing when it's left idle? Why is it still grinding away computing something?

I am in Danger my friends, Since last week my computer battle has been going on a downward spiral... It all Began when my silly older brother download 2 games to my computer WITHOUT my permission (Diablo 2 shareware-even i know that's a big no no) and (world of war-craft but the trial version- not a big deal with that even though i don't like the game xD). It was fine until the next day when i began to start my computer i noticed it was really really SLOW. I then opened my windows task manager and noticed my cpu was going from 50% to 60% to 100% and constantly doing 100%. I also notice my service.exe using alot of cpu during startup, and my windows defender does the same thing. I can't play my favorite game Dungeon fighter online (really cool game btw xD) At that time forward I been using all my knowledge on computers but to no such avail, I have used UBCD(ultimate boot CD) and used its virus cleaners (spy-bot SD, super-anti-spy-ware, avast etc...) But i am still in the same spot as before... Please warriors of computer land help me in this battle one computer mind cannot defeat this problem alone... here is my hijack This log. Hi, CCp here again!

I dont know what I did but all of the sudden I get a WMS Idle Window when I shut down my computer. It asks me to shut the program down. So I click on end program and my computer takes forever to shut down. Eventually it does shut down. I checked the internet and it suggests that I uncheck the Office plug-in on my Norton program. I did that and it didnt help. I am running XP.

Hoping someone can help with this one cause its irritating.

Hi CCp,

Welcome to BleepingComputer.

There should be a file name associated with that error. Can you give me that? Microsoft references serveral things so that would help cut down the responses.

Thanks,

I have had my laptop for three years and I am now suddenly getting a message box when I shut down my computer that says End program -WMS Idle and I have to hit the end button to allow my computer to shut down. I have done some searches to find out what it could be and I have ruled out Nero (I don't even have Nero) and Outlook is not running on my computer when this happens. I do have Norton Internet Security 2008 and I'm sure it must have something to do with it. I am a layman when it comes to computers, so please talk down to me. Thank you!!

If you are running sidebar and any extra programs

Dreamscene will kick it up a bit.
I turned off sidebar and dreamscene and it
dropped to about 650MB.

I'm having the worst time getting sites to come up after this thing has been idle for a while.

I have to get it going by clicking on 6 or 8 IE shortcuts in a row and then F4 all of them out of the way and then finally click the one that I really wanted and then it functions. Or just outright restart the computer.

My connection is set to "always on" and I find nothing to help in my DSL connection diagnosis customer site either and I'm not blocking or filtering anything.

Hello lads,

I'm sorry if I'm not posting this in the right place, but I don't know where else this would fit.

Since I upgraded my PC, I realized that it won't detect idleness. I set my monitor to turn off after 1 minute, but that doesn't happen. The same applies to anything I set to turn off, or show away after X minutes.

Does anyone have a suggestion for me?

It's Win 7 Ultimate, 64-bit.

Thank you.

First, let me say thank you very much in advance for taking the time to read this, and also sorry for cross posting, but I'm getting no love from the "Hardware" section. I am beginning to suspect that my post in Hardware was actually under the wrong section!

Anyhow, please see this thread for more a more detailed explanation of what I have done to try fix this:

http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/888398-wireless-keyboard-mouse-install-affecting.html

In essence, for those who'd prefer not to click over, I have 40% idle. Task Manager shows nothing using the computer processor, but both CPU gauges I have on my gadget bar show use at 40%, also RAM use is at 23% (but I'm not sure if that is high or low..I have 8 GB of RAM so that seems high, near 2GB). Also, I notice the computer is acting a bit more sluggish. I noticed this yesterday after installing my wireless keyboard and mouse I got for Christmas, so I assumed it was associated with that. However I have uninstalled everything related to the wireless keyboard and mouse, and lo and behold, I still get high CPU use at idle. Thanks for the help knowledgeable ones!!

One thing I don't know is if there is anything on my E: or F: drives that may be causing problems. C: is obviously where everything installs to, but I dont know how to scan the other partitions and drives in my computer. So that may also be something to address.

Also here are my specs...

My system hangs only when i leave it for about 20 minutes or so. If i'm using it, it wont hang. Even when I'm playing PC games like Oblivion. So i dont think it's heat problem?

My Power Options Properties' Power scheme is set to Home/Office Desk. No screen saver.
Turn Off Monitor: Never
Turn Off Hard Disk: Never
System Standby: Never
System Hibernates: Never

I used to set to Turn off my monitor after 15 minutes. My monitor would switched off and the LED blinks and if i move my mouse it'd turn back on, like how it should.

But recently it just didn't want to switch itself back on. My system's fans are moving but the HDD is definitely not running. So i thought that the Turn Off monitor option is the culprit but it still hangs.

Any ideas on what i should do? Thanks in advance.

OK, this one I've never seen. Generally, the machine seems to run fine. Everything seems normal, except Task Manager reports utilization at a consistent 70+%, even though its reporting System Idle Process to be consuming 90+%. I've shut down everything in the task tray, including Norton. Stopped any procs I could easily identify as safe. Outside of Idle Proc, nothing is consuming more than 2% CPU, and then its no more than one or two procs at any one time. Anyone ever seen this?!

hi guys have a problem that hopefully someone can help me with. my pc will crash and start makeing a high pitch noise from inside(not the speakers) when the pc is left idle. it usually happens after between 1 to 5 hours. never happens when iim using it. when it does the screen will be black in power saving mode by then i guess and ive noticed the mouse led i off. nothing works to get out of it, i have to hold the power button and force it to turn off.
this started happening when i recently updated from xp to windows 7. i have an old p5k se asus motherboard that doesnt nessesarilly have win7 drivers so i thought it was this. but i have tryed as hard as i can to find uptodate drivers and this dont work. however im still unsore if the drivers i have are really up to date. also tryed resetting bios by taking out battery(just in case).
well thats it im stuck hope someone can help!!!1

A:pc crashes when idle

With a black screen, it's impossible to see what was there last before the PC crashes.

First thing I would do is go into power saving mode and set the screen timeout to NEVER. That will leave the screen on -- so when it starts making the noise, you can see what's on screen (if anything).

Also, if it's going into sleep or hibernation, and you can't get it out, then turn those off as well. A hard-reset (pressing the power button) is never a good thing. Better to have to turn the machine off properly than having to resort to hard-reset to get it back working.

I leave my computer running constantly and it reboots whenever I am away from it. This is regardless of a virus scanner running or anything else up and running. In fact, the only time it doesn't reboot is when I'm running Soulseek. It has rebooted during defragments and other routine pc maintence. I am using AVG Free v8 and it hasn't found any viruses. I also disabled the automatic reboot at a system failure in the Control Panel > System > Startup and Recovery > System Failure.

I've checked the logs in the event viewer and it hasn't reported anything.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

The only real problem I have is when I am playing a video or movie, it jumps up to 100% and causes the video to freeze up for a few seconds. I've gone through msconfig and turned off a bunch of start up stuff that I didn't need. I went from having about 50 processes to less than 30 and have seen no difference. I then changed the performance options from the Control Panel to optimize the system for performance. I have defragged, scanned with AVG and Ad-Aware and still have the problem.
