T480s UltraNav/TrackPoint Sensitivity Jump

Q: T480s UltraNav/TrackPoint Sensitivity Jump

Dear all, My TrackPoint/UltraNav's sensitivity is reduced after rebooting and jumps back to maximum (what I set it to) whenever I access the additional mouse options - don't need to switch to the ThinkPad tab, just opening the menu suddenly increases the sensitivity back to normal. I'm under Windows 10 Build 17134.48.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just moved from a T430s to a T480s and despite the TrackPoint sensitivity is defined as light (full right), it is much more heavy and hard to move the cursor around the displayin the T480s than in the T430s or previous Lenovo laptops. Any help to fix this will be very much appreciated. Regards,JPn21

I have an IBM T40 laptop. I have been having problems with the mouse properties. I opened up the advanced properties for the mouse and selected the UltraNav tab. I keep selecting the "Standard Scroll" option but it never stays. It keeps doing the smooth scrolling. For some reason, after my laptop has been on for a while, I can get the standard scroll option to stay. But then after a while longer it reverts back by itself. It usually happens when something disrupts my wireless internet connection. I have downloaded all the latest drivers that I could find from the IBM website. What is messing this up?

This topic has been an ongoing problem with the Driver, etc., etc., etc. for 10 years + or -. I have four X120e Thinkpads with Windows 10 v1909 installed on each one. They appear to have almost exactly the same Synaptics software installed. They definitely show exactly the same devices in Device Manager and yet two of the Thinkpads have the UltraNav tab  on the Control Panel/Mouse control and two of them do not have the tab. I have been chasing old posts (such as 2011, 2015, etc. for more than two days now with no working solution. Can anyone please help me out?

Hello there, I have an issue with UltraNav TrackPoint while trying to scroll using the middle button. It seems Windows 10 are ignoring the middle button completely. Ive tryied the solution I found here with the registry, but with no luck. I  remember the scrolling worked only for like two days after I purchased this repassed X230 tablet. After all the automatic Windows updates it stopped working. I tried uninstalling the driver and downloading fresh lenovo new one, but nothing... can someone here please help me? This issue is really annoying, otherwise I love the X230 tablet!

I'm using the ultranav middle button to scroll (I live for this feature which is why I've been buying thinkpads since time immemorial) However, on the t460, scolling with the middle button/nubbin is painfully slow in Word 2007, and Adobe Acrobat/Reader is a nightmare. In Word its just slow and you have to use a lot of pressure on the nubbin (there appears to be no setting to change this). In Acrobat, it's agonizingly slow (in both Reader and Pro) and will "stick" on if you try to go to fast and just scrolling for multiple seconds after you release the button.  Stragely, the trackpad scrolling works fine in Word, though it is still bad in Acrobat.  In addition, the middle button scrolling will frequently slip and stop scrolling, sending the pointer to the bottom of the page.  Nubbin/middle button scrolling works (oddly) extremely well in Microsoft Edge... Please help! Middle button scrollig with the nubbin is the best feature on these machines.  Using: T460 Windows 10 64-bit with the latest drivers.

Hi all, I'm running into any issue with my Lenovo T470 20HD where the 3 Trackpoint buttons (Left, Middle, Right) are all performing the same action (Scroll and Right-Click). As one can imagine, this is very frustrating! I simply want the Left button to function like a left-click and the Right to function like a right-click; normal behavior.  The picture below shows the buttons I am referring to:           I have checked my UltraNav settings under the mouse properties, however I only have 2 options: Right-Click and Scroll. I have tried uninstalling and removing the driver. Reinstalling from Lenovo's website, with no luck. I have also update the BIOS to the latest version. I tried disabling and re-enabling TrackPoint in the BIOS with no luck.             I am running the latest version of Windows:    Any help would be apprecaited!

Today my wife said she is hating trackpoint her X1 Gen 4 as she has been having problems scrolling with it.  We have both been using Thinkpads for the last 22 years so this came as quite a surprise to hear. So digging into it, it seems the sensitivity option is totally missing in the drives since around 2015/2016.  I've only been using Linux on my P70 and it has a mind boggling number of settings I can adjust the trackpoint with.  My wifes X1 Gen 4.... Only one setting, speed. So maybe the problem is the hardware I thought.  So booting up a live Linux USB stick, I proceeded to find all the options for setting the trackpoint as I have on my P70.  So the issue is the driver in windows. Found a few threads on Lenovo's forums and the thinkpads.com forums as well. So I consider this a software defect with the drive.  And because my wife is not happy, I am not happy.  Lenovo, you have some stalwart Thinkpad fans and a lot of them buy Thinkpads for one reason, the trackpoint.  Please fix the UltraNav driver to include more configuration for the Trackpoint.  You provide a bunch of options for the touchpad, but only one option for the Trackpoint. Also, ad an option to turn the the touchpad into just a one finger scroll.  I've had to enable the touchpad again in my wife's X1 in order to use the touchpad just for scrolling.

I've owned ThinkPad laptops for the past 20 years.  My most recent purchase was a ThinkPad X1 Yoga running Windows 10.  My prior version was a ThinkPad Edge 520 with Windows 7. What I've noticed is that the "sensitivity" option is no longer available for the TrackPoint mouse.  I've attached a screenshot of the old Ultranav utility which allowed for the sensitivity to be adjusted from Light to Heavy touch.  On the new version, there is only the option to adjust the speed from Slow to Fast (which was also available on the prior version). I have no idea what the sensitivity is set by default, but it's definitely not a Light touch.  This is annoying especially if you have to scroll through log pages (web page or documents).  This is a real annoyance because it is so much more diffcult to use the TrackPoint, so much so, I'm debating whether to buy a mouse, which I haven't used in over 20 years. Anyway we could get UltraNav to add that functionality in soon???

Is there any way to make the trackpoint more sensitive in this laptop? In my old 420s there was a trackpoint setting that allowed me to dial from "light touch" to "heavy touch" sensitivity (please note that this is different from "speed" which I can control separately). I only use trackpoint with trackpad off, so to avoid fatigue I strongly prefer the "light touch" setting and this new laptop default sensitivity is simply more like "heavy touch" in my old computer. Why has this control been taken out?

So the trackpoint on my T480s is having this really annoying drift. When I use it heavily and release my finger it drifts for a few seconds in one direction and then it stops. During these 5 seconds or so I'm completely unable to use the touchpad so it can get really annoying sometimes. Other issue I'm having is the middle trackpoint button (the one to scroll) requires more activation pressure than it should. Even after it "clicks" I still have to press it harder for it to actually register. Latest one is poor dim backlit. My T450s and my Macbook Pro have much, much brighter keyboard lightning.  My keyboard manufacturer is Chicony. I already requested a replacement from Lenovo, this new unit is also manufactured by Chicony and its experiencing the exact same issues.

Hi, I have the trackpoint speed maxed out in the Lenovo Vantage trackpoit settings but the speed is too slow to the point of causing wrist pain. I took a look in Device Manager and there doesn't seem to be a synaptics driver listed. Is this normal. There are two listed: "ELAN Input Device for WDF" and "HID-compliant mouse".  Lenovo Vantage says everything is up to date but I wonder if I have the correct drivers installed or if there's any other way to speed up the trackpoint. I also own a x200t with windows 10 and the ultra nav driver and the speed is perfect at about 80% max.

A large portion of the reason that I use a Thinkpad is the trackpoint. Almost no other manufacturers give them as an option any more, and since it is my favorite pointing method, I continue to use Thinkpads.  However, I find them way too slow and requriing way too much pressure recently. My old T420 has an option in the control panel to require light sensitivity for the trackpoint to move. But this setting is inexplicably gone on the T25/T470/T480. Even with the mouse set to the highest speeds it is WAY too slow and requires WAY too much pressure to use. I get a cramp in my wrist after a little usage on my new Thinkpad where I don't have that issue on my T420.  Is there any reason Synaptics/Lenovo got rid of this option? The ELAN-made Trackpoints still offer this option. I've read various "fixes" such as editing the Windows registry with some commands so that a value of 4 is changed to 0 but it made no difference to me (I believe that trick only works with laptops like the T420 running Windows 10, where the Windows 10 driver hides the option but its still possible to adjust).  I've tried old drivers but they are all for older Thinkpads so they refuse to install. Is there any way to add this feature back? It seems like such a ridiculous reason that I'd have to return a laptop but it's completely unsable to me, so if anyone knows of anything I could try, I am all ears (or eyes, I suppose).  Thank you!

Just received my yoga and downgraded to windows 7, even with the vertical scroll set to one line, the trackpoint is very sensitive. Also there is a initial lag with the trackpoint scroll, if I'm using the trackpoint for the first after a webpage turn, the first light touch is not registered, you have move the trackpoint very hard, which caused the page to move very fast down the page. Overall using the trackpoint on the yoga 460 (maybe with W10, it is different), has been an aweful experience so far, is there a patch or update that I didn't know about? Btw, I have Elan pointing device installed, I can not find Ultranav anymore, why is that? Elan pointing device seem to have less function than Ultranav.

This is more of an intrigue than an issue but I'm still curious as to why this happens. Issue: When placing a T480s on top of another T480s both machines will be forced into sleep mode.  How to reproduce: Line up a T480s on top of another T480s (or T480) and the device will go into sleep mode. I've Stacked T480 units and this does not happen this seems to only affect the T480s line. (These test were preformed on the latest bios/driver revisions) What I think maybe happening is that the T480s when stacked are triggering the lid closed sensor of the other unit. Since this is not the case for the T480 units we have I think it may be because of the thickness of the s models. Is this something that will eventually be fixed via bios update? or is this just a flaw in the T480s design? Thanks for in advanced for your response!

A:T480s is forced into sleep mode when in close proximity to T480/T480s

I've seen this happen in the past, it was due to how strong the magnets are that keep the lid shut.

I have put this post under 'ThinkPad 400 & 500 series' because it relates directly to a T520 but the principle may apply to other Microsoft processing systems which, under certain circumstances, tend to lose their user specified pointing device settings. Not only are there many posts on the Lenovo Community about this problem but also on the net generally. The normal scenario is that when new, the machine always retains the settings, but then after an event: BIOS update, OS update, installation of new software, re install from back up, etc, the settings are no longer persistent. Typically, the settings vanish, but not always, following a reboot, after a user log out and log in, on a return from sleep, and after an un-dock. Some approaches to correct the problem seem to be successful at first: install latest BIOS, install latest UltraNav driver, revert to an old driver that once worked, run antivirus software, reinstall power manager, and one I thought did the trick, run DiskCleanup. But sooner or later the problem resurfaces. So, how to find a solution? The answer seemed to be to find the root cause, which I investigated by comparing a G570, which has never lost its pointing device settings, with a T520 which was fine when new but then started losing its settings; the G570 has had an easy life while the T520 has had a harder time: bigger disk, many complex programs installed, including NET framework, etc. I found that the G570 had command, c:\Program Files\... Hi, I am a new owner of a Lonovo ThinkPad with Windows 7, and I am having trouble with the settings. I am a lefty, so when I first configured the laptop I changed the mouse settings so that they are reversed. This worked fine.

But! I also wanted a real mouse, so I got a Microsoft wireless mouse (USB). Now, I mouse right handed since I am more used to it, so while the IntelliPoint software was installing, I changed the mouse settings back to default. I figured I would just go and change the settings whenever I didn't want to use the mouse.

But when the software finished installing, I found that the Control Panel Mouse window changed! Now, even when the mouse is unplugged, the place where I had been able to change the button settings is a new window that is specific for this mouse! Plus, these changes don't affect the UltraNav, so those buttons are still set for right-handed.

How do I change the UltraNav button settings?

A:Changing UltraNav settings while a mouse is connected

Hello thebookster, and welcome to the forum.

I think you will have to uninstall the new mouse to get your old settings back. Should this work and you set up your Ultranav for a left handed person the Ultranav settings may still not work on reinstalling the new mouse. but it is worth a try.

I started having issues with the ultranav middle button. It works when i start the computer but after a few minutes of scrolling up and down it does not work anymore.  The only way to have it function again is to either restart (which will again only work for a few minutes) or use a bluetooth mouse to uncheck and check the mouse settings for trackpoint which that too will work for a few minutes only. I've updated the bios and updated the driver. Still not stable. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

I just upgraded my T410 BIOS to 1.45; I don't recall the exact previous version number but I believe it was in the 1.30's. Since I've done this, two things have happened: the trackpad no longer works, and the Trackpoint is now very laggy/slow/jumpy; it looks like it only updates about twice a second. Here's a video of what it's doing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzHL5ZI2TcM I'm using Windows 10 here in this video. The CPU load shown in Task Manager is very low, indicating it's not the computer itself lagging. Secondly if I boot the Windows 10 install CD, or an Ubuntu LiveCD, the same problem is happening, indicating that it's an issue with the laptop/BIOS itself, not with Windows. So far I've tried: - removing the battery/unplugging the laptop- disabling the trackpad/trackpoint in the BIOS, booting Windows, re-enabling it... I found this while searching on here for the same problem. Though it's a different laptop/BIOS, maybe it's the same bug? https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/UltraNav-Trackpad-stops-working-after-ne... Anyway the onboard Ultranav is now pretty much unusable on this laptop and I'm now stuck using an external mouse, any help would be greatly appreciated. My computer had restarted from an update and now the only things that work are trackpoint and trackpad pointing, and trackpoint scrolling (surprisingly). trackpoint and trackpad clicks (tap or button) don't work, trackpad scroll and other gestures don't work. I thought it might have been a driver issue because at the time I was using windows enhanced trackpad driver but after switching in between the enhanced driver and the synaptics drivers from the the x260 driver page, neither seemed to fix anything. The trackpoint and trackpad work fine on a usb linux distro so it we know its not a hardware issue. The after start up, clicks work once but appear to behave as a holding down right click, after that it just doesnt work anymore. Right now, I'm just using a mouse. Any ideas?

Hi all, The latest version of the touchpad driver for the T440 disables my trackpoint and removes the option to re-enable it from the Mouse Properties menu. Has anyone else had this issue? I'm on Windows 7 and the original driver on my computer is v18.0.7.40, for reference. Removing and re-installing the new driver did not fix the issue. I'd like to keep the new driver installed (due to behavior issues from my touchpad on the old driver), but lack of trackpoint functionality is a dealbreaker for me. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I have this problem for month now :I close my X1 Carbon lid before going to bed, and in the morning, when I resume it from hibernation, the trackapd and trackpoint are totally unresponsive. Everything else work fine, I just have to wait, sometimes 20/30sec, sometimes a whole minute, to have the trackpad working. This is very frustrating to have a computer resuming so fast from hibernation but being unable to use it. I have the latest BIOS (1.15), latest UltraNav driver (19.0.17.98).Tried several drivers uninstallation/reinstallation, several fresh windows install, problem is still present. Actually on a fresh install of Windows 10 64bit (Anniversary update).

FYI,

The URL below states that the driver being installed is 19.3.4.17

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/ThinkPad-P-Series-laptops/ThinkPad-P70...

However, the actual driver which is installed by the package is: 19.3.4.37! This is not the first time where the package description(s) are inconsistent with the contents.
