Preferred Solution: start file one time only - windows macro?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi aja656

Thank you for your patience. I will be helping you deal with the issues raised in your log from this point onwards

Before we start jumping into things, here is a quick basic note which I mention to everyone. The fix which I have provided for you is for this computer only, it should not be used on any other computer. Each fix is tailor made for the specific task in hand. If for some reason you have system restore disabled, then please re-enable it before proceeding, an infected restore is better than none. Please read through the fix first and set enough time aside to complete the task in one session. If there is anything you feel needs clarification then please ask - do not guess! Thanks.

If this is a business machine then please make sure that you have both the authority and full administration rights to the computer system.

Please follow these directions in the order they are set out for you.

On with the fix.....

I notice that the version of HJT that you are running is out of date, please delete the version of HJT that you have and download the latest version (v2.0.2) - Here to your desktop. Install HJT but do not run it just yet.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.

we have a requirement to get the following data through code (c# or c++)

Boot Time - After powering on the device, the boot duration is the time between the start of the OS kernel and the launch of the logon screen.

Logon Time - The time between user enter credentials and the desktop being shown.

Start up Time ?  The time between user authentication, all startup apps loading and the device being ?ready?

Can i use WMI to get this or are there other options?

After only just having one problem solved on here I have encountered another and I think it is fairly problematic but am far from understanding it - please help!!!

I downloaded the new version of Internet Explorer (version 8) as this was an option when I signed onto the web this afternoon (I previously had IE 7 and am running Windows XP version 2).

But after downloading this I had trouble getting onto the net (though I seemed to be able to initially). So I restarted the PC. But, it did not restart.

Instead I get the following message on a plain black screen when I try to run my computer:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

What is this file? I have an Acer Aspire notebook which came installed with Windows XP Version 2 (I have no CD drive currently).

I have looked on the microsoft website (I am currently on a different PC) but dont understand anything that is posted on their about this problem.

Do I need to re-install a new operating system? Will this mean I will loose all my data that is on my computer? This is very precious to me as I am travelling and I have saved on my computer photos and diary entries - I would be very upset to loose them.

What is my best course of action? Should I take it to a specialist. Again I really hope I can prevent the information that I did have saved on there from being deleted.

Thankyou to anyone who can assist.

Hey all.

Here is my problem. Every time I start windows, it is like I am starting on a new profile. I still have my old desktop (not like when you start a new profile and you just get the standard desktop icons) but still all the programs react like they are being used for the first time.

I mean that I log in windows (only have 1 profile so no need to choose in the beggining), I open a program, lets say Firefox as an example, and it asks if I want it to be my default browser (although the first time I opened it I chose not to be default). Second example is when I visit an "encrypted" page I always get that little pop up message You are about to visit an encrypted page - your info will be transmitted ........

These are the stuff you get the first time you visit an encrypted page or the first time you open your browser. Same thing happens with other programs as well. It all started after I formatted my computer due to a virus I couldn't get rid of. Any ideas?

PS. It shouldn't be a virus/spyware cause I tested clean on both AVG and Ad-aware full tests. I know this doesn't mean much, I am just saying I don't think that's the issue.

G: drive only has about 7% free space. Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance. Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty)

Are you using a USB mouse and keyboard? If so, it's probably save to ignore these errors in Device Manager:

Standard PS/2 Keyboard ACPI\PNP0303\4&198C2624&0 This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.

Microsoft PS/2 Mouse ACPI\PNP0F03\4&198C2624&0 This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.

Out of 25 memory dumps there were 12 different BSOD error codes. The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues
- low-level driver problems

Hello sushmit and welcome to Seven Forums.

I would try running a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If this doesn't help you may want to consider a Repair Install. This will try to fix your currently installed Windows 7 and preserve your user accounts, personal data, programs, system drivers, etc. Usually the most major problem after a Repair Install is you'll have to visit Windows Updates and reinstall updates.

My pc seems to keep freezing majority of the time when I start up. Seems to start up desktop then begin to load, then after a few seconds just freezes. Very baffled as it has just started doing this since the other day. Originally I tried a defrag. virus and spyware scans and also a reg cleaner and that did nothing. Then I tried formatting and starting a fresh assuming that would sort the problem but alas, still locking up on startup. At the moment has only frozen on start up and not at any other time, eventually once it loads up without freezing everything runs fine.

I have also tried removing each piece of RAM at a time and restarting and still froze :-(

Doesnt appear to be fan related, as the fan doesnt seem to be struggling or making loud noises or anything. Although I wouldnt know what signs to look out for.

Not really sure what else I can try. Am worried it might cause more damage if i dont find solution asap.

specs: Windows XP Home with service pack 2

A:Solved: Excel Macro: Run-time error '1004'

With the sheet and the charts it's a needle in a haystack.
The error messag is that you're adressing a range or sheet which is either misspelt or hidden or non existant.
You will have to go through the macro step by step.
Open the VBA editor, loop for the macro select it and press F8 so the code will be executed line by line and it will stop when the error occurs.
Check that line and see if what it addresses exists.

I was given a challenge and not sure even how to start on it.

In Excel 2010 I have one workbook that has multiple worksheets within it. Worksheet one called “Palletizing Downtime” is linked and feeds data from some of our equipment which populates two columns called “Minutes” and “Times down” under each shift per line (example attachment 1). This is a daily feed over and repopulates itself every day per shift.

What they want to happen is to have the data that is populated daily by our equipment on spreadsheet “Palletizing Downtime” pull over and populate into another worksheet at the end of each shift daily at a specific time so that the data is never lost. First shift I need it to move over and save at 4:00 pm daily, 2 shift is 12:00 am daily and 3 shift is 8:00 am daily. This data would be saved to the spreadsheet called “A Line” (example attachment 2). Can this be done?
I did try and write a macro on just one one cell, with a time macro but it does not seem to work. You can see that on my attachment. I would appreciate any help anyone could provide.

A:Create a time macro that moves data from one sheet to another.

Sounds like you have the macros you need to populate what you need. I am thinking maybe use the Task Scheduler to open the workbook at your specific times and run your macros On Workbook Open. Basically, people who use it, should not be opening the workbook around those times, and a few simple If statements to Exit Sub if current time is between 8 AM and 4 PM or 4PM and 12 AM or 12 AM and 8 AM. These would stop the execution of the Macro to Update for those times when you need to look at it and gather the info.Many issues can be encountered if a time macro is running all the time to see what time it is and most would totally prevent what you need accomplished IMHO.

I have attached a spreadsheet. The first tab (Setup) has buttons 1,2,3,4,5. The purpose of these buttons is to have different years investments. I have a tab (Sheet1) that is hidden in the spreadhseet. Each macro unhides, then changes about 3 formulas on the Investment Analysis Tool tab, simply changing the cell reference. Only it does't ' change. It errors out with the above error. I've never see anything like this happen! Thanks in advance for the help.

Monty75, I am sorry but the spreadsheet that you posted does not have any buttons visible.
The Code is there and I have looked at and run it and the problem is that the Code is not on Sheets("Investment Analysis Tool").Select
This is a quirk of Excel, You need to put activesheet. in from of your "Range selection" like so
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=Sheet1!R[31]C[-2]"

Okay, I have an odd one that I need help with: I have MSWord 2007 running under WinXP. In it, I created a macro (by recording it and doing each step manually, one at a time, all within the same macro recording with a freshly selected blank document) that will do the following:

Reset the margins to T=0.3, B=0.3, L=0.4, R=0.4
Create text columns of 3 columns
Create a table in column 1, that is 3 columns by 10 rows
That's it. I used all the defaults that Word wanted to use for creating the text columns and tables - I did not personalize them in any way. It recorded with no errors or complaints. But here's the fun part - when I get a blank document and run the macro, it won't complete. It keeps complaining about the text column width. Here's the actual error it throws:

"Run-time error '5138': Settings you chose for the left and right margins, column spacing, or paragraph indents are too large for the page width in some sections."

When I debug it, the line that is highlighted below is the one with the supposed error:
If ActiveWindow.View.SplitSpecial <> wdPaneNone Then
End If
If ActiveWindow.ActivePane.View.Type <> wdPrintView Then
ActiveWindow.ActivePane.View.Type = wdPrintView
End If
With Selection.PageSetup.TextColumns
.SetCount NumColumns:=3
.EvenlySpaced = True
.LineBetween = False

Hi, welcome to the forum,
Probably some missing VBA refrence? DLL error?

You Googled . . . I Googled . . . and found this, ignore all the things about repair software and so, but maybe there is something in this.

Hello All,

I am trying to put a macro together that will be triggered when a value is entered into a cell. The macro would then place the current time/date in a different cell along with placing the username used in another cell. I have figured out how to have the cell event to be triggered using the below code but I am lost after that. Any help you can provide would be great.

Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Excel.Range)
Dim VRange As Range, MyCell As Integer
Set VRange = Range("D")
If Union(Target, VRange).Address = VRange.Address Then

ActiveCell.Offset(0, 5).Range("A1").Select
Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteValues, Operation:=xlNone, SkipBlanks _
:=False, Transpose:=False
ActiveCell.Offset(0, -5).Range("A1").Select
Application.CutCopyMode = False
End If
ActiveCell.Offset(0, 6).Range("A1").Select
Dim sUserName As String
sUserName = GetNTLoginName
End Sub

A:Excel Macro to Enter Username and Current Time

I couldn't quite get what the macro was trying to do. The best I can figure is that for any change in Column D you want to place in the corresponding row / columns I and H - the date/time and the user name respectively.
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Excel.Range)
If Target.Column = 4 And Target.Row > 1 Then ' restricts changes to col D from row 2 onwards
For i = 1 To Target.Count
If Target(i) <> "" Then ' if you double click in a cell but do not add data the date and user name will not be added
Target.Offset(0, 5) = Date + Time 'puts the date and time in Col I
Target.Offset(0, 6) = GetNTLoginName 'this didn't work for me in my environment
' Target.Offset(0, 6) = Environ("username") 'this is what I use. Try it if the previous row didn't work
End If
End If
End Sub

See if this works for you. If it doesn't produce the results you want post back if you need help.

A:windows takes a long time to start up

Hmm, sounds like you might have many programs loading at once when your computer starts. Try going to:

Start > Run > Type "msconfig" > Click on the "Startup" tab

In that section, see if you can disable as many unused programs as possible, it should help your computer load faster.

Hope that helps ^_^

I have Windows XP, and have experienced a problem w/ my lap top. I just started experiencing this problem about 8 hours ago. When I put it on standby, and then try to turn it on again, the startup freezes at about the halfway point in the screen that says "Windows is restarting..." and has a progress bar on the bottom. When I shut off my computer and restart it, it freezes right after I type in my name and password, only showing my desktop background and nothing else pops up. If I start my computer in safe mode, I am able to start it up fine and run programs. I have run Malwarebytes as well as Combofix. When I get my computer to start, a Just-In-Time debugging window pops up all the time, saying "New instance of Microsoft Script Editor" and asks me if I want to debug. If I run Combofix, my computer is able to restart and Windows XP ends up completely starting when Combofix reboots my PC. Same thing happens if I try a system restore, I am able to successfully reboot my PC without going into safe mode. Also, when I run Combofix, I get a warning that says "There was a rootkit found", and it restarts my PC before scanning it. Here is my Combofix log:ComboFix 10-12-26.01 - rowens 12/27/2010 0:34.5.2 - x86Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.1022.468 [GMT -7:00]Running from: c:\documents and settings\rowens\Desktop\Combo-Fix.exeAV: McAfee Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware *Disabled/Updated* {84B5EE75-64... Hi there. I've found a lot of good information on this site in the past, and I'm hoping someone can help with this one ! I'd be very grateful.

Some time ago, a friend of mine caught a trojan on her Dell Dimension 3000. I volunteered to fix it. The actual hard drive was OK, so I wiped it and reinstalled the operating system (Windows XP Pro). I also upgraded the RAM from 1 GB to 2 GB (processor is Pentium 4, 2.80 Ghz).

Everything works, except that when I first boot up, it takes a long time for programs to load. I did install Norton Antivirus, but even before I did so, it would usually take 20-30 seconds for Firefox to load, and maybe 45 + for iTunes. And this is on a completely reinstalled machine, so there's not very much on it. I went through msconfig and disabled some startup tasks I don't need (also changed the file name on qttask.eve so it stops showing up).

2 things that I think are strange:

1.) This considerably long load time is only for the *first* time the program starts. If you close it and reopen it, it opens in seconds

2.) I have two machines (my own and my work computer) that are both Dell Dimension 3000s, and they have HALF the RAM of this machine (1 GB, same processor), plus they have considerably more programs and files installed, and yet they don't have this problem !!!

I'm not a beginner, but I'm probably not an intermediate...if anyone has any suggestions on what might be causing this and how to troubleshoo... Read more

Yes that is either a bug or by design. The Library folders do not save the write permissions and it's just so lame why they did it this way.

Every time I start up (I am using XP), a window for My Computer opens. I have tried all of the following and nothing gets rid of this.

Checked the Start Up listing and found no start up file relating to My Computer
Checked the file directory in Explorer under my name and all other users, including administrator for the Start Up folder and there is nothing in it
Tried the process of a selective start up in System Configuration Utility and it only re-appears in the start up mode when I finally tick the box for "Load startup items"
Checked the Boot.INI folder and there is nothing in there relating to My Computer

I have seen this problem on quite a few forums and tried pretty much everything that has been suggested but nothing works!!!

Any one got a suggestion? My next alternative is to do a repair of Windows XP.

A:My computer opens each time I start up in Windows XP

Tough one...OK, let's try Explorer view of My Computer...Tools/Folder Options/View tab. Scroll down to Restore Previous Folder Windows At Logon and make sure that it's unchecked.If that doesn't work, then let's try the following, if you are comfortable attempting a registry edit.Warning: The following attempt involves editing the registry. Please backup your registry before attempting to begin this edit. A good tool for backing up the registry is ERUNT Registry Backup Tool, http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/.Start/Run...type regedit and hit Enter.This will open up the registry editor. Then navigate to:HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/WinlogonIn there there should be a value (on right hand side of screen) called Userinit.The data for this value is probably something similar to [b]C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe, Note that the comma is the last item in this string, must be there.If you do see a duplicated string in there similar to the above - simply double click on the Userinit value and edit the data so as to delete everything to the right of the first comma (,). Hi. First off, thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Every time I start up my computer, I get the following message:

"Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender Service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support on how to start a service manually."

Then my internet connection is knocked out, then I get the following error message:

"ZeroCfgSvc MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Again, this happens EVERY time I start my computer. It's happened ever since I started using Roxio, which I subsequently tried to uninstall. I don't know if it's adversely affecting anything, but it's a nuisance, slows down my computer, and worries me that eventually it could lead to something worse.

Like I said, I'll be very grateful if anyone can walk me through the steps to remedy this.

Recently I've had windows start up really slow. Even if I can log in and get to my desktop, it still takes ~20-30 min until my PC starts running as smoothly as usual. I did a virus scan and nothing was found, so it's something else, but I just don't know what it could be. My PC is like 3 years old, so I'm not sure if it's just that. I don't really know what information I should give, because I don't know the cause to this issue.

Every time I open my computer and go to the Desktop I encounter an alert dialogue box that shows nothing but a blank alert dialogue box with the warning icon (exclamation point inside a yellow triangle) and an "OK" option. Just that. No other message. The title of the dialogue box is Explorer.exe. When I click "OK" or close it (by clicking "X") the dialogue box appears again and insists for two or three times.

The weird thing is, last night the dialogue box has a message saying, if I remember correctly, "Explorer.exe not found." But I'm not very sure if that's exactly the message, since I just clicked "OK" (again for three times) and decided to fix it tomorrow morning. But now, the alert dialogue box is just blank. So I don't know what kind of error it's warning me now.

By the way, I'm using Windows 8, which crashes occasionally. Any help?

w32tm /register
net start w32time
w32tm /resync
Reboot and monitor time.
This stops the Time Clock Service, restarts and resync's it, hopefully this will solve the issue.

When I had similar problems I tried this but it did not work! However, even though I am not an expert and when none of the solutions offered on the net seemed to work.
By logic I used a combination from different solutions and it worked for me.
Could this be a problem for ones when solution above did not work?
At the elevated command prompt (with administrator privileges), type the following command
1. Type "w32tm /debug /disable" and press 'Enter' (net stop w32time gave an Error 5 Access denied response!)
2. Type "w32tm /unregister" and press 'Enter' (without using the first command the second did not work!) you should get the response " W32Time successfully unregistered"
3. Type "w32tm /register" and press 'Enter' you should get the response "W32Time successfully registered"
4. Type "net start w32time" and press 'Enter' you should get the response "The windows Time Service is starting. The windows time service was started successfully"

There has to be some reason related to the platform

Apparently there are a few fixes:

Delete NetBeans related folders within your user directory
Run CCleaner
Turn off "to-do" scanning (just close the "Tasks" window and uncheck "Enable Java Tasklist":Tools->Options->Editor->Tasklist (if your ide already loaded).
