Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen6 and issues with Thunderbolt 3 dock

Q: Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen6 and issues with Thunderbolt 3 dock

We purchased a new X1 Carbon 6th Gen with the new Thunderbolt 3 Dock Win 10 1803 and have had all kinds of problems. Bad enough to consider other brand alternatives. All Lenovo drivers are current, we updated the firmware and drivers for the dock. With that we still have the following problems and dont know how to resolve them1. The network connectivity from the dock to laptop with USB-C loses connectivity on occasion. Also when the user shuts off the laptop, comes back and turns the laptop on, no network connectivity is re-established. The only way to fix this is to unplug the USB-C cable and plug it back in. Sometimes that will lock up windows and we have to do a hard shut down and start of the laptop. 2. Running the display out from the dock is not always reliable. The monitor will turn off randomly. To bypass this issue we have to just plug the monitor directly into the laptop. 4. Occasional random bluescreens with a stop code DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION. This error is related to bad drivers. Are we missing something. Is there anything we have to set in the BIOS to resolve these problems? I've been reading up on this dock and a lot of people are having problems with this dock and carbon 6th gen laptops

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi!I just got a new "X1 Carbon 5th Gen - Kabylake (Type 20HR, 20HQ)" and a "X1 Carbon Thunderbolt 3 Dock". I have an external screen connected to the dock and it works fine (VGA connection). I also have an other monitor with display (DP) connection that I want to use. But my computer can't find the other monitor, only the one with VGA connection. Is there any easy ways to fix this problem?Best regards

Apologies if something similar has been posted, I just can't find the answer. We have a 5th Generation Thinkpad X1 Carbon connected to a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 dock. At the moment the display is mirrored using a VGA cable to connect to the dock. What we would like instead is to connect the dock to 2 external monitors with separate content on each monitor and the laptop display blank. I just can't figure out if this is possible, what might be needed, and how! Any help greatly appreciated.

I just got a new Carbon X1 6th generation (20KG).  I started using this with my Thunderbolt 3 dock (40AC), that I successfully used with my previous Carbon X1 5th Generation. There seems to be some compatibility issues here. After using it with the docking a while (apprx. 1 hour), the X1 suddenly started to continuously disconnect/reconnect from the dock (each 2-3 seconds), before it permanently was disconnected from the docking and would not connect at all.  When I disconnected the X1 from the dock and restarted (without connecting to dock) the X1 Thunderbolt software and devices/drivers related to that on the X1 "went crazy" and appeared/disappeared from the device manager continuously (each 2-3 seconds). I needed to enter bios and temporarily disable internal battery for it to normalize again. If I then connected to dock, the same would happen after some time. I've updated Thunderbolt software, drivers, firmware and also Thunderbolt 3 dock firmware and drivers, so no more to do there. I have not verified it completely yet, but it might be that the disconnect/crazy_stuff happens when the battery charge of the X1 reaches 100%. I once connected the X1 to the dock when the charge was 97% and it was stable then (the X1 does not charge on AC when the battery is > 95%). If this is the reason, one solution might then be to use Lenovo Vantage to set max charge to e.g. 97%, but I think this is a poor solution. Some ... Read more

Question regarding ThinkPad Ultra Docking Station (P/N 40AJ0135US):
If the docking station is used with a new ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6-th generation laptop (which uses 2 Thunderbolt port to connect to docking station), does the 2 USB-C ports on the docking station itself become Thunderbolt? According to the specs (https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/solutions/pd500173) they are not, but maybe I'm missing something here? It would be very disappointing losing Thunberbolt ports with most expensive docking station.

I have an X1 Carbon Gen6 ThinkPad and have connected it to a ThinkPad Ultra Dock (40AJ0135US) using Windows 10.  I'm trying to connect two external two displays, but only one will work at a time.  The resoultion on both displays are 1920 x1080 with a refresh rate of 60p HZ.  I'm using new DisplayPort to HDMI cables to connect each monitor. Only a single external monitor will be active at a time.  I've swapped the cables and they're both fine.  I've updated the Windows 10 and Lenovo drivers.  This same configuration worked with my previous T420s ThinkPad laptop and the Intel graphics. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you.

I've seen a few posts on this, but no solution, so I'm trying another one. I have a Carbo X1 6th gen connected to a USB-C dock. (Wavlink but others have the same issues with Lenovo dock). The USB-C Dock keeps disconnecting the monitors, mice and keyboards intermitently. It last a few seconds then eveything comes back.  I have identified a source yet... it may happen 2 times in 5 minutes, then be OK for 30 minutes. Any idea of where I could look for a source of error for this issue?  Everything is up to date as of today (using Lenovo Vantage software) Many Thanks!

Hello - I have a X1 Carbon with the ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock.  Everything worked great under Windows 8.1.  I would occassionally have an issue with the dock not coming online after resuming Win 8.1, but it was easy to fix by powering the dock on/off or rebooting. However since upgrading to Win 10, I have a very frustrating audio issue.  Application seem to have trouble picking between the sound device inside the laptop and the dock.  For example, I'll get an incoming call from Skype, and it will start the call on the laptop internal speakers, then say the "Realtek audio device is unavailable".  If I call the person back, it then completes the call and works fine through the dock audio device (which is what it should have done the first time). However the issue isn't only with Skype, it's with all apps.  For example, if I start Pandora in the Chrome browser, it will start playing the audio through the laptop speakers for about 1 second, then stop.  I then have to refresh the web page a few times to get it to start playing out of the dock sound device.  All the while, Windows is configured (and properly reports) the dock sound device as the default (which is what I want). I suspect this is an issue with the drivers for either the dock or the X1 not properly talking to Windows 10, but both are up to date, and either Lenovo or DisplayLink (who makes the dock drivers) have any noted issues with audio-switching. Has anyo... There are reports of extreme throttling on X1 Carbon Gen6 (reviews on Lenovo reviews US page, or reddit). It seems X1C6 is limited to 23W/29W TDP, while X1 Yoga Gen 3 is limited to 44W TDP for short and long term bursts.  It makes little sense as physically X1C6 cooler looks bigger thus thould be able to handle longer/harder loads. Can we hope that it will be fixed in the nearest future? Or is there an actual reason for lowering X1C6 TDP, so people who expect 8650U to run at 44W should just look into buying X1Y3?

So I have an X1 Carbon Gen 5 (Kaby Lake) and the Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 1 (40AC0135US). I bought two 4k monitors and after several frustrating hours figured out that the Gen 1 dock can't output 4k on two externail monitors at 60hz, this appears to be a dock limitaion only. I see that you now have a Gen 2 dock (40AN0135US) that says it will do 2x 4k @ 60hz, only problem is that every compatability cross refrence I can find does not say the gen 5 X1 Carbon supports this new dock. I don't see a good reason for it not to be compatiable, but wanted to find out for sure one way or the other before I bought it, as it is not cheap.

I recently purchased the X1 CRBON 5TH Gen (2017)...type 20HR plus a thunderbolt dock.I connected them together with a Dell 28" 4K (@30Hz) screen (p2815q) connected through DisplayPort from the dock, plus a Microsoft keyboard and Jabra 510 USB speakerphone.Using the Windows 10 stock image from Lenovo, plus Office 2016, Chrome, Visual Studio, Skype,  and various other apps (putty, RDP, SAP GUI, others) the video performance was atrociously bad. Alt-Tab, which I use heavily would take 3-4 seconds to respond, switching between applications, Windows would freeze and sometimes crash, I would often get blank or black windows in Chrome and Office. This was on the embedded Thinkpad screen as well as the external monitor.I ensured Windows Update was up to date, as well as Bios, Drivers etc through the Lenovo companion app. So...I dove into the BIOS and voila! Does the Thinkpad P51s support the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? I have the Thinkpad P51s with stock Windows 10 Pro and updated to latest drivers and Windows version and installed the latest Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock drivers. Attaching the Thunderbolt 3 Dock to the P51s as described in documentation, it charges the notebook, however, noting attached to the dock is recognized. I've tested with attaching USB flash drives, headphones, Ethernet, HDMI, and DP, but nothing is recognized nor are any warnings/errors displayed in Windows. While the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is listed as being compatible with the P51s and T570, the notebook order page does not list the Thunderbolt 3 Dock in any of the accessories lists. Lenovo Sales also confirmed that the Thunderbolt 3 Dock is fully compatible with the P51s.  However, I needed to purchase the Thunderbolt 3 Dock separately from the notebook order. What's going on? Has anybody successfully used the P51s or the T570 with the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Or is this something I need to wait for full support via a future BIOS/driver update? Or perhaps my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is defective? Thanks,Boris

Anyone have a fix for the x1 carbon laptop going to sleep mode very quickly (1-2 minutes) while using a lenovo docking station?  It doesnt happen when i use the laptop without dock.  Ive tried all the normal setting in windows.  they are set to 15-20 minutes.  It still happens.  Ive updated the drivers for the docking station.  It still happens.  This is also an issue with an employee's 4th generation X1 and a USB-C dock.  After waiting for 25 minutes on lenovo chat and no one responding, i called in.  They spent 30 minutes playing with the same settings then said it was a software issue and transfered me to another department.  They tried to charge me $200 to fix the problem.  My laptop and dock are less than 6 months old.  I'm extremly upset with lenovo!

Just setting up my new X1C6 with Win10 and the ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 dock. Everything seems to be working, but occasionally the fan starts spinning like crazy, and a process named "WMI Provider Host" appears in the Task Manager with >25% CPU usage. After a few minutes the system is back to normal.  After a bit of Googling, I went to Event Viewer -> Applications and ... -> Microsoft -> Windows -> WMI Activity, and I found a series of errors that coincided with the excessive CPU load events. Every error has a reference to a process ID that corresponds to "Thunderbolt.exe". This leads me to think that the problem is related to my docking station. I tried downloading the docking station drivers from https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/en/solutions/acc100356 but it turns out that I have an even newer version installed already (something .12 vs .10) . Yesterday, I heard some loud hissing from the corner of the laptop where the TB3 ports are. It disappeared when I unplugged the dock, and came back after I plugged it in again. After a restart, it went away, and the port as well as the dock seems to be working fine (currently with Ethernet and a VGA monitor). Any ideas what to do here?

Hey Everyone, Hope someone here can help out. We've deployed ~60 of the 6th Gen X1 Carbon's (20KG Model Type) with the Lenovo Thunderbolt Dock (40AC Type)We've used Lenovo System Update to install all system and dock updates. When we've docked the computer the thunderbolt dialogue appears and we select always connect.Everything works for our users for about a day, then they complain that their computer isn't charging, their screens have gone black or are flashing, or the computer starts making device disconnect/reconnect sounds while the thunderbolt icon flashes in the taskbar repeatedly. All symptems persist after a reboot. We've been working around this by going into the BIOs and disabling the built in battery, Then plugging into the dock and powering on the computer from there. So far we've only had 1 user experience a recurrence (We haven't ruled out user error)I'd like to know if there is fix, beyond the "disable internal battery" solution. Thank you in advance for any insight you can offer.

Ones opened, the thunderbolt controller is visible in the thunderbolt software. But no connection with the dockingstation. Is this because it's not comptable according to lenovo?

Hi, I'm using the new ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock which came out with the P52 with my P1. So far it almost works fine when you boot up, but whenever I disconnect the machine from it after sending it to sleep or hibernation (like overnight)  and plug it in the other day the mouse and keyboard are not detected.I need to reboot the laptop to use them again with the dock. Thats really annoying. I thought it might be a driver issue but after updating to the newsest drivers from lenovo the problem persists. Has anybody a solution for that? Of course all other updates from Lenovo side are in  place..and I'm still using windows 10 1803.the mouse is a razer deathadder and the keyboard a Filco majestouch 2.Is that the typical glitch of a new product we always have to face as beta testers :-) Merci A

We have standardized our deployments to ThinkPad X1 Yogas, and in many case including this one, they are the second generation model. Because of the performance, we use the Thunderbolt 3 Dock, purchased directly through Lenovo. This setup is not unfamilar to use as we have deployed over 40 workstations in the same configuration. This morning, our team received a call stating that an end-users monitors weren't working. Upon reviewing, we found that the dock wasn't being recognized by the laptop, although the connection was there because it was charging the laptop. We went through the normal "rinse and repeat" steps of ensuring that the thunderbolt cable was connected to the correct ports on both the dock and the laptop, removing the connection, removing the power, rebooting the computer, reintroducing the dock, etc., but to no avail. We remove the dock from known devices hoping that it would spark it to recognize a new device, but it didn't. We removed the Thunderbolt Software completely, reinstalling it, and then reconnecting the device, and still, nothing. Our devices are set to automatically install critical and security updates both through Lenovo Vantage and Windows Updates, but, the only change made between the time it was working and the time it stopped working wasn't relative to the dock. To be sure, we rolled back the updates, then rolled back farther, but it still didn't resolve the issue. We then followed through with installing all Windows and Lenovo updates: ... Read more

Hi scsh4, You didn't mention dock firmware. There was a recent update with quite a few fixes and changes. Note the install instructions, it's not the usual:
