HDMI not working on Ideapad s540-14IWL

Q: HDMI not working on Ideapad s540-14IWL

I purchased a new Ideapad S540-14IWL recently but couldn't find a way how to connect a secondary display via HDMI. I use Windows 10 Pro. So far I've tried the following:- using different monitors;- using different HDMI cables;- installing newer and older Intel VGA drivers;- going through the Windows 10 video troubleshooter;- switching off the laptop and/or the monitor and powering them in various sequences (as suggested in a few articles I found on the Internet);- tried to switch to the second display using Win+P, of course. No matter what, Windows is not able to detect a connected display (even after I manually push the 'Detect' button). The display itself finds no signal. Surprisingly, the Lenovo diagnostics utility couldn?t identify a problem after running both the Display and the Display Interface tests. The laptop is flashed with the latest BIOS. I read other Lenovo models have similar issued when AHCI mode is selected in the BIOS rather than RST. However, switching to RST comes with a warning that the controller change will result in all the data being erased, which I can't afford. Any help on that issue will be appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

So I bought  a new s540 without an os. Installed Windows 10, ran automatic updates, installed other drivers manually etc...When I connect the laptop to an external monitor nothing happens - trying on different monitors and cables.I thought I had a damaged product so went back to the store for a replacement. A few days later I got the replacement - same exact problem. The sales representative said it is probbly a problem with the whole line. Is that so? I just returned it to get my money back. Is it a known problem? I see that I'm not the only one having this problem. I've been a Lenovo user for most of my life and would like to remain one. Can you please suggest a fix? I'm not going to buy another s540 / ideapad model until I can find a solution.  Thanks, Samuel

Hi! I bought  Ideapad s540 14IWL with Nvidia mx250 without OS. I've installed Windows 10 from official msdn site and then I've been starting to install drivers from Lenovo site in order: Chipset -> Intel VGA - Nvidia. And when I had installed Nvidia driver the system failed in BSOD with error "driver_verifier_dma_violation". And the after any restarts system fails again. If I remove Nvidia drivers - system works fine (but ofcouse wihout mx250  ). Does anybody know how I can solve this problem?

Hello,I used my laptop for a couple of days and I couldn't get to make Lenovo performance mode (pressing Fn + Q to change fan speed) to work. I've seen this thread, but I don't want to risk installing wrong software. Anyone knows how to solve it without manually going to BIOS every time, and if that software is compatible with my laptop? Edit: I forgot to mention, whole software/drivers are up-to-date, both via Lenovo Vantage and via Windows Update (System version: Windows 10 Pro 1909 18363.476)

Hi, My new ideapad s540 GTX are lagging when i play video on my tv via HDMI. I think the problem is that It's using the GTX 1650 graphic card when it is plugged in to the TV and at the same time the cpu are using more power and the fans are spinning up. When i'm watching videos directly on the PC i uses the internal graphic card, and everything work perfectly. All the drivers are up to date and everything else for that matter. It's both regarding Youtube videos and various streaming services. The only thing that's working is when im gaming, strangely enough. My tv and hdmi cable works perfectly with my old computer . It´s really annoying, so it would be fanatastic if someone could help. Than you.

So I got a new laptop, a Lenovo s540-14IWL. Everything is great about it, other than the fact that the bezel is not glued properly to the screen at the right and left edges.I had this problem on the original one I got and also on two replacements. I decided to keep it because the price was very good and I really like it. The other options were not nearly as good and as a programmer I need to have a computer all the time. I was wondering if someone could offer some help?I got 2 options:- Live with it.- Send it to the lab under warranty as it's only about a week old (Problem is I saw their work on my cousin's laptop and it wasn't good). Can it cause any further damage to the computer if I leave it like that. To the eye it's not as bad as it looks in the picture. One important note: If I hold it with my hands it will glue back and look perfect for a few minutes (When it was new it stayed for longer) until it goes back to its' original state. Thanks a lot for taking the time to read my post! Here are some pictures:When staring in front of the laptop:Right Side:Left Side:After touching it with my fingers for a few seconds:

This issue started when I was setting up my laptop. I just installed DirectX which is required for a software I use when this shadow appeared at the bottom right side of the screen. I thought it was quite odd so I uninstalled DirectX, but the shadow is still there. I tried reinstalling DirectX and it was still there. Sometimes the shadow disappears, for example, I switched my laptop to tablet mode and it was fixed! I felt so relieved when I made it come out of tablet mode and the shadow was no longer there, a few seconds later, the shadow returned.Does anyone have a solution? Even when the laptop is booting up the shadow is still there, I've been very careful with my laptop so I struggle to think of it as a hardware issue. https://imgur.com/gallery/luzN7hK

Hi everyone I just bougth an IdeaPad S540 14-API with AMD, and I'm having a problem with the usb ports. This laptop has 2 usb 3.0 ports on the right side, I'm using a Logitech mouse (probably USB 2.0)  connected to one  of those and it's working properly, but when I connect another usb 3.0 device (like my flash drive) on the available port next to it the mouse stops working. When I remove the flash drive it starts to work again. So I have an USB 2.0 hub, I connect it to the port then the mouse to the hub and the flash drive USB 3.0 to the other port on the laptop (not on the hub) and everything works fine. It semms to be a conflict when connecting a USB 2.0 to one port and a USB 3.0 to the other port, but not with the USB 2.0 hub. Do you have any idea? I updated the bios already to the last version. Thanks

Hi,I've been facing some heating problems with my IdeaPad s540. I bought it about a week ago. I was running some CFD simulations recently and I noticed the underside of the laptop was getting quite hot. On checking with core temp, all 4 cores were showing max temperatures over 80 deg celsius even with  just 50-60 percent CPU load. I ran a stress test with Cinebench and 3/4 cores hit 100 deg celsius for a couple of seconds and the fourth one had a max of 95. I ran it a few more times but now the maximum core temps were less than 90 for the most part (with no noticable drop in performance). Is this normal behaviour? I read the max safe operating temperature for the intel chip was 100 deg celsius. Does that mean the hardware will eventually get damaged? On a side note, I remember a few (small)bread crumbs slipping through the gaps in the keyboard. I tried to use a blower to get them out but they disappeared. Could they be somehow blocking the cooling system or something? Does anyone know if the keyboard is isolated from the rest of the laptop? Thanks Spoiler (Highlight to read)

Hello community, I recently bought a S540 and sadly the keboard is driving me nuts. The keys are a wobbly mess. If I don't hit the key pretty much dead center, the keystroke won't be registered. As you can imagine, having only a small area where the key actually triggers a response is frustrating. Moreover the haptic feedback of the keys is missleading. The "haptic click" doesn't necessarily mean, that the key was registered. Combine that with the wobbly keys, that don't register a keystroke on most of the area anyway, then you can imagine how frustrating working on that thing can get. I have a few pictures addedd to this post. Neither of the keystrokes you see in the pictures were a registered key press. Maybe it's hard to see in the pictures what I am feeling, but at least you can see how wobbly the keys are. Even the cheapest keyboards I've used didn't behaved like that. I tried removing some keycaps to look if something of the scissor mechanism was missing or if I see anything wrong at all. Sadly it looks all normal to me. I also had a S540 14 inch (10th generation i5) for a few days, before I decided to get a 15 inch model (8th generation i5) with a dedicated graphics card. One thing I remember was, that it had a pretty good keyboard. Now I'm asking myself, if Lenovo puts THAT differend keyboards in almost the same models or if my keyboard is faulty. Maybe someone has a similar model and can report how their keyboard feels.   pressed to... Read more

Hi, Personally, I find the included USB type-c charger a bit chunky. I'd like to buy a more compact, portable charger. I quickly tested my phone's 18W charger and the S540 was charging (though slowly, obviously). The included charger has 60W (20V, 3.25A). However, it appears to me that the majority of compact chargers has 60W (20V, 3A). Given that the 18W charger worked, I suspect a 60W charger will as well. Will constant usage of 60W instead of 65W cause any damage or problems to the Ideapad? Also, is there a way to read out the supported Power Delivery modes? Thanks!
