ThinkPad T470s BIOS bug - WOL and Thunderbolt 3

Q: ThinkPad T470s BIOS bug - WOL and Thunderbolt 3

It appears that the only way to report a BIOS bug to Lenovo is to post in the Forum (at least that is what hardware support told me), so here goes! Base system:20HF-CT01WW (T470s)BIOS: 1.11 (issue also showed up under 1.10)Windows 10 Pro Edition, Creators Edition, fully patched. Behavior has been observed both on a freshly built SSD (Samsung 960 EVO 500 GB) and on the shipped Samsung 128 GB SATA SSD with the shipped Windows install.Thunderbolt Firmware: n1wth02w.exeThunderbolt Drivers: n1wta10w.exeBIOS Issue related to Wake On LAN and Thunderbolt 3:"Wake On LAN" (Config -> Network) will be referred to as WOL"Thunderbolt(TM) 3" (Security -> I/O Port Access) will be referred to as TB3Using F9 in the BIOS to select defaults and then setting WOL to Disabled and TB3 to Enabled results in:Booting with AC power has no problems. The Thunderbolt port only shows up in Device Manager when the Thunderbolt firmware utility is run - it appears that Thunderbolt ports dynamically attach to the PCI bus only when necessary (i.e. firmware utility asks it to turn on or a device is plugged into the port).Booting with battery from a cold boot (machine powered off for at least 15 seconds) results in a hang with the windows boot time circle of dots cycling endlessly. Powering off the machine at the circle of dots, waiting a second or two, and then powering on the machine usually results in a successful boot into Windows 10.Once the notebooks successfully boots under battery power, restarts are fine.Shutting down the notebook and waiting 15 seconds before powering results in the circle of death hang.Using F9 and then setting WOL to Disabled and TB3 to Disabled results in:Booting with AC power has no problems. Thunderbolt 3 is unavailable (tested using Thunderbolt firmware utility).Booting with battery from a cold boot results in Thunderbolt 3 showing up in Device Manager (use Devices -> View by Connections, look on the PCI Express Bus for stuff attached under "PCI Express Root Port #1 - 9D10"), the Thunderbolt software launches (icon in the notification area of the Taskbar), but the Thunderbolt firmware utility doesn't see the port!Booting with battery from a cold boot and then restarting results in a hang at the initial Lenovo BIOS screen with the fan going to maximum speed.Resetting WOL to "AC Only" resolves the issue.Doing this with TB3 Enabled results in Thunderbolt port that only shows up in Device Manager when the Thunderbolt firmware utility is run (which is believed to be the correct behavior). This behavior is observed both when booting with AC and with battery.Doing this with TB3 Disabled results in a Thunderbolt port that stays resolutely off. This behavior is observed both when booting with AC and with battery. It certainly looks like there is an issue with the WOL setting and that the issue interacts or is involved with the Thunderbolt 3 support.BIOS Issue 2:It does not appear that F9 (Defaults) affects whether "Thunderbolt(TM) 3" (Security -> I/O Port Access) is Enabled or Disabled. I would expect F9 to reset this setting to a default (probably Enabled). BIOS Observation:If you switch "Boot Mode" to "Diagnostics" (Startup page), the BIOS boot screen includes the line "FOR EVALUATION ONLY. NOT FOR RESALE." I doubt this is intended!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

HiI just would like a description and confirmation on what the following options do under the Thunderbolt 3 dock in the Bios for this series laptop I tested the option "No security" and this seems to bypass the authentication pop up when logged into Windows when plugging in the Thunderbolt 3 dock. So essentially it enables network ethernet connection to work straight away Can someone tell me what the other options do?

Am running a T470s with a Gigabyte eGPU. Been working fine until I upgraded to the latest BIOS 1.31 the other day, and now it no longer works. The small fain of the eGPU will spin up but the main unit itself (main fan, lights, etc.) will not spin up at all. Thus far I have...1. Checked BIOS settings (No Security)2. Installed/reinstalled Thunderbolt software & firmware3. Downgraded BIOS to the last two versions and back4. Tested eGPU with work laptop & it functions as expectedI'm running Windows 10 but I believe that the issue is unrelated to Windows 10. The reason is, is that beforehand, when the laptop first boots and is still in the BIOS phase, the eGPU used to fire up immediately (lights & main fan). But I cannot even get that, which tells me the issue is not Windows 10 related.Any other suggestions before I go open a support ticket with Lenovo? I'm still under warranty at least.

I bought a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 for my Thinkpad X1 Extreme.  I booted up in Ubuntu 18.04 and it wasn't detecting anything connected so upon reading online it seemed clear that I needed to enable Thunderbolt in bios.  I  enabled everything in the Thunderbolt dection, with no security.  After booting up, the system said "Configuring Thunderbolt Controller... Please do not power off".  It stayed like this for 30 minutes and I finally decided to attempt power off but it would not respond.  Holding the power button for as long as 60 seconds does nothing.  I tried closing laptop lid... I tried unplugging thunderbolt... nothing works.

In the morning today I got a notification from Lenovo Vantage that a new version of BIOS is available for install. I went ahead and installed, restarted and my dock isn't working. Tried to plug in a monitor into the TB3 port, also didn't work. I went into BIOS and turned on BIOS assist for Thunderbolt but it didn't have any effect. Anyone else is experiencing the same issues? Thinkpad model: 20MF000DUSBIOS version: 2EET36W 1.1820MF000DUS

System Specifications:- X1 Yoga (Gen 3) with i7-8650U and 16GB RAM- BIOS Version: 1.19- EC Version: 1.08 Hello, exactly one week ago, I changed enabled "Thunderbolt BIOS Assist" in the BIOS to support Linux.  Following this, the system refused to boot to anything but a black screen.  Thus, I sent the machine in for depot repair.  I just received the machine back again today and the same thing occurred after enabling the same setting.  After a long series of calls, I was told that no one is authorized to report BIOS bugs and that I should post here instead.  I sincerely hope this is fixed, as this is a major error that required a motherboard replacement previously and will most likely require one again.  I have started a new ticket for this repair and will be receiving a box tomorrow.  However, I wanted to make sure this is passed along to someone who can fix this error.

Hi All I have been crawling through these forums and Google in general, it seems a lot of people have similar issues. I run a T470s, I use a Startech USB-C to HDMI adaptor allowing me to connecto to 2 external monitors. I have done for many months and all was fine. I recently ran system update and found multiple drivers needed updating, I ran this and since I cannot use my external monitors.  Thunderbolt software is up to date, as per screenshot it doesnt show the controller version or details in lower half. Device Manager doesnt show the controller at all (even hidden devices). I have tried:uninstall/reinstall of TB SWrunning the firmware update tool but that just says 'No Active Controller' in the system.I have tried reinstalling every Intel driver availablethe BIOS was updated by System Update previouslyI have checked the BIOS settings and everything is enabled I found a system restore point from a few days ago which I think is before this started, rolling back to that allows the TB3 SW to show the controller version and a device showing in Device Manager but my monitors still dont work. A further reboot without changing anything takes me back to 'None' controller version and nothing in Device Manager. Open to the idea it could be my adaptor has died, I understand you sometimes need a TB3 device connected to update the FW (?) but I do not have any other devices, hoping to try my adaptor on another machine at head office next week to ... First time ditching my HP world for a Thinkpad.... I purchased a new old stock T470s still with Windows 7. Everything was working well, except when trying to update drivers using the Lenovo System Update Tool. I would get repeated FwUpdateCmd errors and after tracking those down I found out it was in reference to the thunderbolt plug. I tried changes in the bios but kept getting the FwUpdateCmd errors. Thunderbolt worked just fine on the original drivers and firmware as delivered, AND it showed up in Device Manager. Everything else has been great and fully updated, just not thunderbolt which was on the original drivers. So I decided to check online for the latest thunderbolt drivers and I found there was both a firmware and software update. I checked the date and saw the firmware was dated Jan 19 while the software was Mar 19. So I updated the firmware first. It updates the firmware just fine. However the software won't update because now my thunderbolt is no longer active, meaning it doesn't show up in Device Manager! It was *always* there before the firmware update. When trying to update the software it says no thunderbolt found. A:T470s issue with Thunderbolt appearing in Device Manager

I've spent 3 hours on this now with no solution. I've got the latest software installed, version 16.3.71.300 and it uninstalls and installs just fine.  I can't open up the thunderbolt software program, so can't verify in that window. I've tried changing the Thunderbolt service from manual to automatic and still nothing in Device Manager. I've reinstalled the firmware update after having the correct software version installed, but I still get nothing in Device Manager. Sometimes not even hidden devices will show it.  I've attached a picture to show what it's like after it turns on at the start of the firmware update.  The driver shows up as 16.3.71.9 during the firmware update before it actually updates but has turned on the deivce.   thoughts anyone?   The readme for firware says it can't downgrade.

I already typed something here, since I thought it is related:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-6th-gen-BIOS-update-broke-external-... Pulling Thunderbolt cables was fine. After a while:Pulling Thunderbolt cables gave me 1 in 3 cases a bluescreen (internal power error). I did a BIOS / Thunderbolt / Driver update on 21th of May 2019. Everything was fine, restart worked. Went to work, this time, turned into standbye before pulling the cable. Everything was fine. At home, I opened the Screen after getting out of Sleep (old Linux Standby), saw the welcome for a short moment, and than bluescreen again.  Reboot, ... freezes in BIOS. Directly at the "Lenovo" Splash screen, before having the chance to put on the finger on the fingerprint reader.Super laggy. Tried EVERYTHING mentioned in this forum, enabled/disabled all settings in BIOS, had to reset with the button in the bottom with a paper clip, tried to deactivate internal battery. By a chance of 1 in 4 I could get into the BIOS or select a boot media.  Lenovo hardware test says, that everything is fine. Have been many times, close to a brick, since it hangs directly after pressing the power button. By chance could boot, made a backup. HDMI is also not working. Does not recognize any thunderbolt devices. Flashed old BIOS version, no difference.  What makes a difference: completely disabeling thunderbolt in bios. Than BIOS/booting works like a charm, b... For me it sounds like the Thunderbolt Chip or Firmware is broken. Similar to the more popular bricking of Yogas, P51, before. I maybe could flash it manually like discribed here, but I guess, this is against warranty regulations: https://posts.nadim.computer/2018/10/26/repairing-a-thinkpad.html

A:Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 docking station does not charge Thinkpad P51 battery.

Everbody's p51 would be the same.  The thunderbolt port won't work as a charging port.  The thunderbolt specs specify 100w max.  That's not enough.  Your thunderbolt port is not for charging.  To charge via the dock, you need a workstation dock, not a thunderbolt dock.  A thinderbolt dock can charge things like an x1 carbon (5th gen) or x1 yoga (2nd gen)

I wonder if anyone have a solution to this problem. It does not make  sense to have to connect the Thunderbold AND the AC power to the Thinkpad, it should be just ONE Thunderbold cord. 1. My power brick is 135W, 20V-6.75A2. I am connecting the Thunderbolt to throuogh the port on the back of the dock.3. I have went to BIOS  and under power section, "disable the battary for technical service" and pwered it back on. None of the above solutions worked.

Does the Thinkpad P51s support the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? I have the Thinkpad P51s with stock Windows 10 Pro and updated to latest drivers and Windows version and installed the latest Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock drivers. Attaching the Thunderbolt 3 Dock to the P51s as described in documentation, it charges the notebook, however, noting attached to the dock is recognized. I've tested with attaching USB flash drives, headphones, Ethernet, HDMI, and DP, but nothing is recognized nor are any warnings/errors displayed in Windows. While the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is listed as being compatible with the P51s and T570, the notebook order page does not list the Thunderbolt 3 Dock in any of the accessories lists. Lenovo Sales also confirmed that the Thunderbolt 3 Dock is fully compatible with the P51s.  However, I needed to purchase the Thunderbolt 3 Dock separately from the notebook order. What's going on? Has anybody successfully used the P51s or the T570 with the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Or is this something I need to wait for full support via a future BIOS/driver update? Or perhaps my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is defective? Thanks,Boris

It's not clear to me what 'Wake by Thunderbolt' (hereafter WbT) does and whether or not it's required for 'Wake On LAN' (hereafter WOL).  In the T470s and T480s user guides, there's no mention that WbT is required for WOL so I'm thinking it's not.  But then again, since Ethernet is in the dock itself, and seeing how there are controls for PXE, I could see how it might be required. ReferencesT470s User GuideT480s User Guide

I have since March this machine which is giving me quite a lot of problem. I had several BSOD (or the nicer version Win 10 provides) since several months. I updated even the BIOS. Now it seems related to a specific situation: if the notebook is connected to power supply and goes to sleep. If instead it relies on battery, such issue does not occur. Looking at the minidumps, I notice the main error is always the same PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA caused by ntoskrnl.exe + 1640e0 As I use my machine for computations, it becomes really and issue. If I close it and force it to sleep, everything seems OK (or less reproducible events). I made the Lenovo tests and nothing looks wrong. Missing the CD, I do not know how to make a memtest. I read elsewhere that it be related to nvidia drivers, which I do not think concern this machine. I will attach the minidump files. Thank you for your suggestions and help.

Not sure what you mean by you searched for drivers at Lenovo?  Or are you saying you found the drivers but they dont work?  Either way below is the link to T470s.   Click "Drivers and Software" on top.  You can Choose Windows 7 32 bit or windows 7 64 bit.  Also that link will have "system update" as well.  It should pull down all software for your laptop automatically.  Also you metnion T470s but wasnt sure if you had the 20JS, 20JT, 20HF or 20hg models.

Unfortunately, it only seems to be able to charge it when the laptop is off / in sleep mode. I know it's not going to be able to charge the laptop as fast as the original 45W adapter, but I thought it would be able to provide at least some power. Is there a way to make the laptop charge from this adapter when running? Dear community, (please bear with me, I am not an English native speaker.) This is not about the "plugged, not loading" issue I found around here multiple times. My Thinkpad will charge via charger only when it is switched OFF. It loads perfectly when plugged via docking station.Batteries are getting empty, power save mode and all that. Pluging two different power units show same result. Behaviour, reproducable:Computer running, info tray says battery 1 in use and battery 2 not loading (or vice versa), no matter if charger is plugged or notWhen charger is plugged while PC runs, the charger indicator light right besides the power plug remains darkOnce my ThinkPad is truly off (shutdown), any of my chargers work just perfectly: orange light while charging, green light when finishedAdditional weirdness: ThinkPad does not start when plugged to the charger. Hitting/pressing the power button at the right of the keyboard has no effect at all. Once unplugged from charger, it boots just as usual. While typing this with 9% remaining capacity, computer shut down. I plugged it to the charger and closed the lid --> orange light. Waited a couple of minutes. Opened lid. ThinkPad wakes up, and I continue writing.Again: charger is plugged, LED light is off again, info tray says not loading/in use. Any ideas?Frederik I am running M$ Win10 Enterprise.

Hello! I'm new to this forum and Thinkpads in general, but recently I got a problem: in Windows 7 my keyboard works like I have sticky/filter keys enabled (many key pressings are not processed and also there is a beep signal sometimes), but I don't. I thought it to be a Windows-related problem, but similar think happens when I'm using BIOS and bootloading through GRUB. Here are the videos showing the glitch: https://youtu.be/MbR0AyVe_7Uhttps://youtu.be/LadCmJXBWmY Right now, because of the problem, the laptop is almost impossible to use. If anyone knows what is causing this, please, let me know!

When connected to the Thinkpad DisplayLink, the driver shuts off useability of the Jack sound ports (on both the computer and the display link). Earlier I could not initiate the driver installation of my USB-ports, and thus could not use the rest of my computers' USB ports -- The Display Links' Ports work. This issue was solved when connencting to the port while the DisplayLink was disconnected.I was connecting a Samsung phone System & Device Firmware/ USB Composite Devices: 10.0.16299.15 peripheral Jack Driver vers. 10.0.16299.15DisplayLink driver vers. 8.3.1905.0USB Root Hub, USB Hub Drivers SuperSpeed and not: 10.0.16299.334USCI USB Connector Manager: 10.0.16299.251eXtensible Host Controller 3.0 10.0.16299.431SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite: 2.12.5.0Phone Driver: Samsung Galaxy S7: 2.9.317.215Realtek Driver: 6.0.1.8224DisplayLink//Lenovo Audio: 8.3.1888.0 most of rest of drivers are firmware vers.: 10.0.16299.15my processor driver vers is 10.0.16299.371

Hi, I searched for another thread on this topic but I couldn't find anything like what I'm seeing. I have a new T470s running Ubuntu 17.10 (Linux). At the end of the workday I remove my computer from the AC charger and close the computer. In the morning when I return to work I open the computer and see that the battery has drained completely. I have only had this computer for a couple days but so far the behavior is consistent: the battery drains completely overnight. Has anyone else encountered this behavior or have any suggestions? ThanksSam

We have had 4x ThinkPad T470s internal battery which have all swollen in the laptop. ASM P/N: SB10J9003FRU P/N: 01AV406Rechargeable Li-ion Battery NON 11.46V - 2.274Ah/27Wh Really is alarming as the machine has been in the environment for around 14 months. This is a real health and safety risk.

I have my keyboard set in Lenovo Vantage to load a website when I press the F12/Star key.  It was working for the entire time I've had my computer, but stopped about 2 weeks ago.  Also, today I tried to use the Fn+PrtSc/Scissors key to take a screenshot, and that is not working anymore either.  It could have been one of the recent Lenovo updates, but I'm not sure.  Does anybody know how to turn these keys back on or to figure out what is causing them to not work anymore?  Thanks!

Did you update power management driver recently?  That is casuing FN key and OSD problems.  Solution is to roll back the power management driver.
