Latitude 5285 and other 2 in 1 laptops

Q: Latitude 5285 and other 2 in 1 laptops

My husband is considering purchasing one and would like to know if they can be hooked up to an external monitor and dvd drive? How would you do that in a simple way as we are not techies.
I would appreciate any info on this.

Preferred Solution: Latitude 5285 and other 2 in 1 laptops

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Carol,
Thank you for writing to the Dell Community Forum.
The Latitude 5285 system has a USB 3.0 Port and an external DVD drive can be connected. It has a USB Type-C (Refer to this link http://dell.to/2vsCU9w) and you would require a Dell adapter USB-C to HDMI/VGA/Ethernet/USB 3.0 to connect an external display (Refer to this link http://dell.to/28RIlmw).
Kindly get back if there are any further queries.
For me to better assist in troubleshooting, please click my DELL-username and send me a Private Message with the Dell Service Tag number and your email address.

Hi there,
Before I start to talk about the Latitude 5285, let me explain another tablet that i having which is Dell Venue 8 Pro 5855. Dell Venue 8 Pro 5855 smart card reader(NXP chip) is able to connect by 3rd party library (github.com/.../pcsc-sharp), after connected, I can go on to scan card like MiFare Desfire 14443A and ISO/IEC 15693 13.56 MHZ.
Recently, I bought this Latitude 5285. The smart card reader of Latitude 5285 is produced by Broadcom. The software that I created is not able to work with this smart card reader. There are 2 smart card readers under Device Manager’s Smart card readers category which are “Contacted Smart Card Reader” and “Contactless Smart Card Reader”.
I have done tremendous researches on the internet.
Some said that is because contactless reader by default is only for Pre Boot Authentication, 3rd part program is not allow to use it unless turn off something. This website (https://blog.g3rt.nl/enable-dell-nfc-contactless-reader.html) author is telling that Contactless Smart Card Reader need to turn off the CV Radio mode etc by using the Dell ControlVault driver DOS tool called ushdiag.exe.
But I have checked the ControlVault driver of latitude 5285, there is no ushdiag.exe tool provided.
I have checked this Latitude 5285 BIOS Setup. I did not see any related settings that i can deal with.
Any approach to enable it? To me, it seems contactless reader is locked.
Please help.

Thanks and regards,

I have seen massive amounts of refurbished Dell latitude......
I'm wondering is Dell latitude any good. I have seen lots and lots of refurbished Dell latitude. What are your thoughts on Dell latitude?

A:Is Dell latitude laptops any good?

It depends on what you will be using them for. If it's just for surfing the web and minor web surfing it should be ok (depending on the specs of each Dell Latitude computer).

I have been interested in buying a 14 inch or 13 inch laptop, but I have some "must have"s before I am willing to buy it:
1) Matte screen (though this can be fixed with certain screen overlay products)
2) dedicated Page Up / Page Down keys (unlike, say, a Macbook, which requires the function key to be pressed along with the up/down keys)
3) Hard Drive Indicator light
4) Good sound from headphones (many computers have terrible sound with headphones, for some reason!)
5) Momentum/Inertia feature for the trackpad.
The Lattitude laptops I saw in microsoft store fulfill 1-3. But laptop makers today have this infuriating pattern to TAKE AWAY features. In this case, their touchpad driver had so many fewer features than older laptops. One must-have for me is the Inertia/Momentum feature, where if you make a flicking motion with your finger, the cursor continues to move, as if you flicked a trackball.
Does anyone know if recent Dell computers can be forced to use a different touchpad driver which has this feature?

We are in the process of installing Windows 10 on all of our systems.  After Windows 10 is installed on the Latitude 6530s and 6540s the systems will no longer restart from the Start Menu.  They simply go to black screen and have to be hard rebooted.  Restarting from the command line (shutdown /r) works though.  We are using Configuration Manager to image the systems and during the task sequence the systems also go to black screen when they need to be restarted and have to be hard started as well.  We are using the latest Dell Windows 10 drivers and installing Windows 10 Enterprise version 1607.  In the BIOS we have selected UEFI and Secure boot.  The 7440s that we have don't exhibit this issue.  Is anybody else seeing this?

A:Hard drive failures on Dell Latitude D400/D600 laptops

HI, I'm thinking about picking up a 5285, but need to understand what the 5285 can use for external displays, and how to do it before purchasing.
I currently have a U3011 2560x1600 display. Will it work?
I'd like to switch this to run a dual of 1920x1200 displays. Will this work?  If so, what is the recommended port replicator for this?
I've asked online chat a couple of times. One said no on the 1920x1200, one 1080 only. Another first said no on dial displays, then, technically 2 1920x1200 is possible but there may be problems. I'm using this for work and not playing games on this setup, so I don't care how fast the displays are as long as they are not laggy system performance does not suffer much, and can play a youtube video.

A:Lattitude 5285 supported external displays

Hi Jeff,
The Latitude 5285 ships with Intel i3/i5/i7 processor and Intel HD 620 graphics based on the region. Kindly find the specifications here.
Even if you choose the i3 processor - 7100U, as per Intel, it supports a maximum of 3 displays and it also supports 4k display. Kindly review the info from Intel here.
The compatible docks have been listed here.
The system however, has 2 DisplayPort over USB Type C ports and I suppose, you would not need a dock if you are going to connect two displays.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

In June 2016 our company bought Inspiron 5759. I used it at office, we have air conditioning, nothing that could cause overheating or other problems. In the end of July 17 laptop just turned off and didnt react on any actions. I brought to service center and they told it's the hub located on the same board with CPU. The only way to fix it is to replace the whole board which costs around 600 USD because there's CPU Core i7 in it. I was given another laptop Inspiron 5558 which was not used since winter of 2017 because it had problems with WiFi. I tried to connect it with LAN cable and discovered that LAN is not working, in fact there's no LAN adapter in device manager. Service center said today that's the same problem - but this time hub is not completely broken, it's just doesnt see LAN adapter and periodically shuts down WiFi. The technician told that this is a frequent problem with Inspirons and Dell knows about it but doesnt recall laptops or extend warranty on this spare part. I asked when second laptop got the wifi issues - it started at the beginning of 2017 and warranty ended in December 2016. Again just 1-2 months.

So, it looks very strange that Dell laptops break right after ending of warranty with same problem, and we can't just change the hub, we need to buy a new board which includes CPU for 600 USD.

I don't know if its the laptop or if it has to do with the router but it seems that Apple laptops always interfere with my wifi connection.

My brothers Mac does it when we both visit home and my girlfriends roommates mac always kicks both of our laptops off the wifi. After a few minutes it will let us connect back up but then dies out again after a few minutes.

I assume it has to do with the laptops because neither my brother or the roommate seem to have the problem and it only happens when they are online.

Here's a thought. I've been searching high and low for an affordable laptop which has

Awesome Graphics card (not sure what - but something that could handle Crysis at high)
15-16" screen with 1920 x 1080 res
4gb or more ddr3 1333mhz ram
core i7-720qm or higher processor
backlit keyboard
HDMI, long battery life, etc etc

So basically everything but at under $2500. I even bought a dell studio xps 1645 with the above specs and the price was real good ($1730 with student discount) but it had lots of problems so i had to return it.

Now that the problem is solved (? maybe?).. dell dont offer that laptop in that configuration, making the laptop around $2400 just due to an increase in RAM (6gb instead of 4gb).

And since I am unsure of the quality with dell or any other brand for that matter, I was wondering if there is any laptop out there that gives alienware m15x performance for a smaller pricetag? (a discount coupon for the above would do! hehe)

If not, what about "overhauling" or "Pimp My Laptop" sorta stuff if you catch my drift... You know customizing the laptop or even building it up from scratch.

I've done some basic upgrades in the past (RAM HDD, bluetooth card etc.) but does anyone have any experience in upgrading graphics cards, screens and CPU's?

Any experience or information about this is very welcome, as finding the right laptop in the right price is sorta like the Holy Grail of laptops, especially in NZ s... Read more

Has anyone else noticed how dark the screens are on the Latitude 5X80 series machines? Out of the box both the 5480 and the 5580 are significantly darker than the comparable units in the 5X70 series.
There was a graphics change from AMD to NVidia in this model but it seems like this more of a backlight or screen mat issue than card issue.

I recently purchased a Latitude 14 rugged laptop without a hard drive so that I could add a larger capacity drive than what was offered when I configured the system.  I received the laptop without the required hard drive tray needed to install a drive upon contacting Dell they sent me the tray without the adapter that connects to the SATA connector on the drive.  After numerous conversation with support they are unable to identify this (probably $20) part so basically I have no way to install a hard drive in this system.

It is a bit late, but the part you need is Dell part number N96D2.  They call it a "CBL, FPC, STRG, OUTER, 5404".

We have during the last autumn bought 3 Dell Latitude 7275 2in1  which comes with the "Dell Latitude 12 Premier Keyboard"
On all of these we experience a very annoying issue.
When connected to the keyboard it behaves very unstable and frequently looses contact with the 7275 just by a light touch and does not work at all, the users have to be very picky in which angle they have the 7275 connected and use it for the keyboard to work at all.
We have spoken to Dell support last week and they say the are not aware of this at all.
We can´t believe this is "by design" and thus we wonder if anyone else have the same issues here ?
And if so have managed to solve it somehow and can share the solution.

i got this info here GPU Temperature 103C on Latitude E6420 - General Hardware - Laptop - Dell Community

A:Dell latitude e6430 and dell latitude e6420

Joseph mate best leave as is after all it was made to function as it came. Now for the compound and copper shim personally I would not bother with the copper shim I can see no good reason for it the dual pipe again if it was made to work with one pipe then leave alone.

It is better if you renew the compound using a decent cleaner and compound and I can recommend these for that job

Arctic Silver Incorporated - ArctiClean for thorough cleaning and preparation and Arctic Silver Incorporated - Arctic Silver 5 for the compound.

Now it depends on who you listen to but I always use these products and after the old compound is thoroughly cleaned off and the surfaces prepped I spread the compound very thinly and across the both entire surface of the CPU and the heatsink with my finger inside a vinyl or latex glove and then place a rice grain sized piece of compound on the CPU and replace the heatsink. If you touch the surfaces after clean and prep then redo it.

While you are in there do make sure the fan and the radiator are really spotless and I sometimes relube the fan bearings to make sure the fan is running at full tilt when needed.

Q: laptops

Hope I am in the right category-otherwise feel free to move this. I am new to the laptop realm. Could someone answer the following questions:
1) should I be taking the battery out when not in use or plugged in to other power source?
2) is it ok to have it closed (screen or monitor face down)when it is on-like closing it when you are typing and someone nosey walks into the office?
Thanks for your help!(any other tips on laptop use would be appreciated by this novice)

Hi there -

This is just from my own experience. Perhaps some other laptops users will have differing opinions.

1. It depends upon the make of your laptop. I know the Compaq laptops I use in my computer lab will charge the battery when the power is on. Once it is fully charged, though, I remove it to store it. Keeping it in a safe place is good for it when it is fully charged.

2. It doesn't hurt the system to close the screen when it is on. (I do it all the time!) The only thing to be careful of is possible damage to the system from repeated opening/closing - sometimes the case can wear and tear.

Hope that helps!

I have begun some research on laptops. Does anyone have any feedback, either good or bad, on their laptops. I was looking at the Vaios, but I have been hearing bad things about them overall. Any experience? I also, am looking at the Fujitsu. These seem to be good, from what I read, but I don't actually know anyone that has used one. My work has issued me a Dell Inspiron, but I am not happy with the fact that you can't have both media types in at the same time. Thanks for any suggestions.

I have had two HP laptops. A pavillion that would over heat so I couldn't put it on my lap and had to be really, really careful about where I put it and be sure that there was nothing around it. In summer I propped it up in the back and had a small desk fan to keep it cool. Eventually it became impossible to move because the fan in the back was so hinky that if moved, it would make a loud noise. Once it was working ok in one place, then it would work. But I couldn't use it on my lap or move at all. The second was HP 15 that has a screen that is now totally breaking on the left side. I see lots of posts about this but no solutions. SO, another HP that I can't move. The company has been totally unresponsive to everyone who's posts I read. I do think since this is a design flaw, they should have done a recall. I've owned laptops since 1995 and have NEVER had one just fall apart. I also am now having to get rid of an HP printer that 'thinks' it has a paper jam that it doesn't have. Again, tons of posts abnout this, but no solution.  I've spent hours doing what HP suggested, with no success. I think HP needs to get out of the hardware business. They just aren't good at it. I used to be a total HP fan, as you can tell from what my business owns. No more. I have a Lenovo small laptop that I think I could throw across the room, and a Brother printer that is now 10 years old and sill works beautifully, an Espon printer that is still working. I hope this is the right place to post this, as there doesn't seem to be a seperate forum for purchasing new computers...

Anyway, I need a laptop for school next year and definitely need a PC. I've looked at HP's and Dell's, but HP's have odd case designs and are expensive, and the Dell's are too expensive overall. My budget is $700, but I would REALLY REALLY like to stay at $600.

I need recommendations because I am new to purchasing a laptop. I've checked with the school and all that they require is a 15" or larger screen, Windows Vista Home Premium, and a 100+ GB hard drive. Since this computer would be used only for school (researching on the Internet, word processing, Power Point documents, etc.) I am assuming that I don't need something too high-tech.

Today I saw a Best Buy ad for a Compaq A916NR laptop, with everything I need. Here is a link: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...06368&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1199496037736

So, I guess my question is; do you think this laptop would fulfill my needs? I am REALLY interested in this laptop because it is exactly what I want and can afford.

Opinions would be appreciated!

Q: Laptops

Hi, thinking of buying a laptop, can anyone tell me, will I be able to hook my broadband modem from my pc into laptop? Do I need to buy any extra cables?

To make my own movies, do I need a DVD/CD-RW drive?

And to hook up to the internet on the move, if the laptop has an internal modem, does that work wire free on the move? and if so how? And do you just get a contract with a company for example?

Im not to smart on all this but I can tell ya, you can network the two computers together if you want using either a crossover cable if your other PC has two Lan cards or you can buy a router which is the way I do it and it will share your internet connection.

Not to sure about the movies.

As for internet on the move, do you mean around the house or going other places? If you mean around the house, then you will need a wireless router and a wireless lan card for your laptop unless the laptop already comes with it.

I recently ran into quite a predicament.
My old laptop's hard drive stopped working.

So I bought a new one very quickly, so that I wouldn't get behind on my work.
However, I bought too quickly, without looking, and to my horror, I had an AMD C-50 processor, with 1ghz processing speed.
I had unknowingly downgraded the processor by over 50%.
And there were no returns accepted.

I transferred over my 6gb of ram to my new notebook, and hope that it would improve the performance. (yes, I know it's a weird number, and I should really be using twin ram cards, but this is all I have at the moment)

Unfortunately, it didn't.
The C-50 processor is the biggest performance bottleneck in the machine.

Now, I decided, this machine is junk anyway, why not overclock it?
But there were no BIOS options for changing speeds, and nobody on the web knew a practical way to overclock the C-50 either (it has integrated graphics).

This laptop does have its virtues though-- the weak processor means it has a 5 hour battery, so on most days I can take it to work and come back without having to bring my power cord.
But the 1ghz processor isn't nearly enough to do anything intensive in a reasonable amount of time.

Now here are my questions:
Is it safe for me to move my HD back and forth between my new and old machines? (the old one still works fine, with the exception of the previous dead HD)

Is there any better way for me to move the HD between the two laptops, without ha... Read more

A:Using a HD on two different laptops

The hard drive has absolutely nothing to do with the processor speed - what's more likely is that that you simply haven't yet installed the proper chipset (or other) drivers for the current hardware.

Go to the laptop manufacturer's website, and download the proper drivers and install them - then check things over again.

I'm really sorry if this is kind of a n00b question, but why do some laptops come with na integrated intel GPU and an optional Nvidia Geforce?

I'm looking for a good performance laptop, to work with Vegas Pro and other heavy apps, and I found this sweet machine...expensive, but still sweet xD
But what really grinds my gears is the Intel + Nvidia combination. Why do some laptops come with two GPU's? Would such a combination result in combatility issues? Is it to choose which one to use, or does it use both for a more powerful result?

I'd appreciate some info on this, can't seem to find it online.

Thank you for your time.

A:Why do some laptops have 2 GPU's?

because the integrated GPU isn't good enough for some games or high end apps and some people prefer dedicated graphics and not integrated so they offer NVidia GPU as an optional extra. also the intel GPU is integrated into motherboard, NVidia one isn't

you will only use one GPU though.

I recently had a buddy of mine over to play some games over my wireless LAN. Turns out we both have identical laptops . Anyways, when he turned on his W-LAN card, neither of our connections worked. His computer said there was an IP address conflict, so I ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew ed a few times on both machines, to no avail. This isn't an imediate concern, but it might get hairy if I don't fix it (especially if I decide to have a LAN party :dead: ). Thanks in Advance.

A:Using 2 laptops on a LAN

Look in your network settings. Most likely you will find that both your laptops have as IP-address, and as subnet. Even the Default Gateway may be the same!
The IP's should be different like 0.1 and 0.2 in the end.

Also, to connect 2 PCs/laptops only, you will need a different cat5-cable, not the normal straight/patch cable but a cross-over cable.

Finally, you will need to enter each other's UserID/password in the User-area and make shared HD etc. available.

Both of these laptops are Lenovo. My current laptop, which is about to die, is also a Lenovo, and it has served me well so I don't have a problem getting another Lenovo. However, to be honest, I don't know that much about laptops, so if anyone would like to recommend another brand and model, I'm happy to listen. But, budget matters: these two laptops are each around $600, and I don't want to pay anymore than that. I do not use my laptop for gaming or video editing. For my needs, the above specs are probably sufficient.

Right, Sister wants a laptop.

I want to know the difference between a Celeron M running 1.73 GhZ and a Centrino P M running 1.60?

The two laptops are both 512mb with the dell having a 40gb hd and the hp having a 60gb hd.

Which one is better/faster?

The centrino setup will be better.
Centrino does not describe the processor, it describes the wireless/processor setup. The centrino has a pentium m in it. The Pentium M is faster than the Celeron M.

I'm sure you probably do.

If you would, look at this one, and tell me what's the problem. It's [was] a $2500 - $3K computer, I think. (I know the seller, too)...

I have 2 laptops, one came with xp home. I have now put xp home on the 2nd laptop using the disc but how do i register the second one as the number has already been used. Is there a way around this without having to buy another xp disc. Thanks

A:Two Laptops , One Xp!

No - you can only use the license you have to install XP on one, and only one computer.

You must buy an additional full installation version cd of Windows XP with its unique 25 digit license key to authenticate the installation.

There is no other legal way to do this and any attempt would be considered software piracy.

DO NOT USE THE WINDOWS XP LICENSE KEY FROM YOUR ORIGINAL INSTALLATION OF XP TO TRY TO VALIDATE XP ON THE SECOND COMPUTER! (Be aware that XP will shut down after 30 days of not being validated after installing XP)

If you do try to use the same key code on both, it will still shut down on 30th day and be inoperable after that. It may also cause your first installation to become invalid as well.

Q: Laptops

Hey Guys,

Hope this is the right place to post,

But what im wondering is if i buy a laptop in America, and bring it back to ireland with me will it work fine over here or will i have any problems with power or formats?

Hi there,

Firstly - I apologise for posting in this forum, because I am not too sure which of the other forums to post in...

Well, here is my question...
How well do laptops (performance) compare to Desktop PCs.
I have a 3.01 Ghz HT Advent computer at home. With 512MB RAM and an 80GB HDD with a 200GB External HDD. It has a 19" monitor...

THe reason I have stated these specs is because I am looking to buy a laptop (with wireless built in) so I can connect to my network. At the moment the computer isn't really mine and I have a lot of work etc to be doing, so i am looking to buy one of my own.

However, I have been looking at laptop prices etc - And to be honest, I think I would rather spend the money on another desktop as the SPECs do not seem too good at all.

I have been looking through a dell catalogue and have come across the following:
Dell Latitude D810 for ?899: (Without VAT).
Intel Pentium M Processor 760
2.0 Ghz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533 MHz FSB
XP Pro
15.4" Widescreen
64MB Graphics Card
Wireless :AM 802.11b/g

How will I find this compared to my home computer?

A laptopm with a centrino and turion have less processor power than those you find in you desktop. But you can get a laptop with a pentium 4 or amd 64 but you will not have as good battery life.

Hi there.

I haven't found the whole 3-D experience so far very good --especially as you have to wear those uncomfortable glasses but a colleague of mine wants a 3-D laptop for Xmas.

Any such animal around and if so are they any good -- before you suggest get a 3-D monitor this laptop would be used while travelling so the person wants to watch 3-D movies / content on the road.

A:3-D Laptops anyone

Didn't even know that there were 3D laptops. I've not been noticing much hype lately around 3D where I am. It seemed to be gaining steam a while back, but i think it lost that momentum. I could be wrong though. I cannot see the 3D effects, had a wandering eye as a kid, so I'll be honest and say that I don't follow the technology at all.
