Find missing files in a row of consecutively numbered files

Q: Find missing files in a row of consecutively numbered files

I have like

up tp 5000
Do you know a program which can search for missing files in this row?

Preferred Solution: Find missing files in a row of consecutively numbered files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I scanned two files using a (newly acquired) Kodak i2900 document scanner, and was rushing. I saved both under the same (automatic) name in the same folder, and it didn't ask for overwrite confirmation. But it did overwrite the first statement.

I ran a search for all files modified at the time of scanning--They are all within one minute of each other. In order, I have:
Prefetch file (LEXEXE.EXE) from system Prefetch folder
PF file (LEXEXE.EXE) from system Prefetch folder (different hex tag)
Log from scanner software's Program Data folder
XML file in scanner software's Program Data folder (different subfolder)
PF file (LEXEXE.EXE) from system Prefetch folder (all new hex tag)
PF file (LEXEXE.EXE) from system Prefetch folder (yet another hex tag)
PF file (TWAINGUI.EXE) from system Prefetch folder
Shortcut to file name (a PDF document)
Shortcut to file name (exactly same as #8)
Shortcut to folder where I saved files
Ditto #10
PF file (KSSCFG.EXE) from system Prefetch folder
Log, as in #3
PF file (DLLHOST.EXE) from system folder
HST file from scanner software's Program Data folder
XML, as in #4
PDF document using the name I changed it to about 2 hours later
Ditto #17
Extensionless {} file from a folder regarding malware
Can anyone please, please, PLEASE help me retrieve the first file?

A:Must retrieve consecutively scanned files that overwrote each other

Unfortunately, once a file has been saved with the same name as an earlier file the earlier data is no longer available in most programs. Two files of the exact same name cannot be in the same Folder, one has to be at least one character different, the time, date, size, etc., don't make a difference, that has been a 'standard' for years, at least back to the late '80s when I started learning about computers for work and got my first computer in '92. Some programs may be able to retrieve a previous version but don't think so with scanning.

I have hundreds of microsoft files in the root directory of my c:/ drive identified with a mishmash of letters and numbers. I am running Windows XP, home edition. I did not put them there and when I try to erase them I get a "cannot remove aspnet.msp. Access denied." Although all the files are identified differently, they all contain the same files. They are filling up my hard disk. Can anyone give me some me information on how to get rid of these files.

I have some files apparently that have 13 digits. Don't know how to delete. I've used various erasers and unlock programs and none will delete these, and when I try, often another 13 digit number appears.

and other seemingly random numbers with the same number of digits. Unable to copy or delete them individually or as a batch.

Any ideas? Thanks

Sounds like a permissions problem... Do they have Braces { } or brackets [ ] around them? A screenshot of their location would be best:

I started to get low disc space notifications about three weeks ago. I download a lot of podcasts so I assumed they were the culprit. I've since moved my podcasts to an external HD. I have an Acer Extensa 4420 laptop with 160GB HD. From the factory there were two partitions, C and D. I'm assuming the D is being used for backup. When I check to see disc space available C has only 1.5GB of 70GB free and D has 1.8GB of 30GB free. I attempted to look for large files but there are none since Podcasts have been moved to external. Some photos on C but not to the tune of 60GB. No really huge programs, other than MS Office When I look at files they appear with odd numeric names but don't appear to have content in them. File names are like this-------00af2fee2ed77a8550 or 4f2ffa202e0ff8a496. Recycle bin is clean and this File phenomenon is repeated on all three drives, C, D, and external. Anyone have suggestions as to what these are, should be named, and where is my disc space? Thanks

Does anybody know why do I get numbered copies of the same file (PDF or Doc), especially number (1) in my computer? These are files that I use and do not use. It is not all over the place, but exists.
I open a folder, and I see:

My computer does not seem to be infected by a virus. It works perfectly. How do I solve this issue? Thanks.

A:Why do I see numbered copies of a few files in my computer?

Usually that occurs when you save a file under the same file name 2 times. For instance, some programs will allow you to save a file under the same file name as one that already exists, but will tack a 1 or 2 onto it depending on the number of files already in place. This is a copy of the exact file already in place, but since it is a duplicate the 1 will be added.

You can replicate this by d/l ing a program 2X and it will end up in whatever folder you sent it to, but will be listed as program.exe, program.exe(1)

I would guess that Adobe is making back ups automatically every time you access a file or on a regular basis. Check the settings & see if you can turn off the auto backup. I am not particularly familiar with PDF reader so you may need to consult Google to find the way to access the settings.

Also, anytime you notice any strange behavior, it would be a good idea to d/l & run Malwarebytes to be sure your system is clean. The free version will work fine. Install, run a full system scan & quarantine anything it finds.

I recently experienced a system crash which resulted in Windows being unable to start successfully. Having acquired a new HD and restored my computer, I reconnected the old malfunctioning HD to my now workable desktop. Every file previously located on D drive of the faulty HD remained. Other files located on C drive, specifically Desktop, where I usually save my files, were gone. The system storage space however indicated that the files remain though. (i.e. 50gb of 80gb remaining). I next ran PC inspector on the drive but to no avail. The files are mainly movie files in .avi, previously residing on my desktop. I believe desktop folders are divided for different users.

I believe there are two desktop folders for acer computers, All Users and *insert user name*
C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\Desktop
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop

The problem is, after reformatting my com with a NEW hard-disk, I now have a NEW user profile. Next, I tried accessing the old desktop folder on my old HD, and found that impossible. Apparently, all the files inside the Desktop folder of my OLD hard-disk have become inaccessible, because they were under a different user profile.

So, how may I retrieve my files? Educate me please.

I've got a situation here whereby .TMP files are appearing in network directories, and the files are going missing. The size of the TMP file matches the original file.
I'm trying to narrow down the issue, because I think there may be two problems here.
1. Offline Files are enabled, to allow profile redirection. It seems that this is also by default, is allowing Clinet Side Caching when there are network issues. Does the original file (.doc for example) get renamed
as a HR234.TMP for example when the Slow link detection sees slow performance?
2. If the above TMP file is created when there are network issues, should this resolve itself (sync itself back to the network) when performance improves?
Currently we are in a situation where we have a department that have files missing from many network shares, all the missing files seemlingly replaced with a .TMP file, so do we have to go round to every machine in the department, and manually
sync them to resolve this?

A:nero express burn DVD-VIDEO files, can't find my files

Nero Express is only going to burn previously authored DVD files. The 'Add' box is looking for .bup, .vob, or .ifo files, to add to the Video-TS folder on the left.

Did you create a DVD using another program? The full version of Nero has the '“Make Your Own DVD-Video' option.

At the top of the first screen, after Nero opens, choose your DVD drive with the CD option. Then you will get the Video CD option.

Hi and thank you for reading me
Several days ago, I launched a in-depth scan with avast! and a few problems popped-up. Most of them were called PUP and were located in my Temporary Internet Files. I found the ones for IE and deleted them but I don't know if Mozilla has its own separate files. Furthermore, one identified as a trojan was located in my Windows Defender scans file (I have the name of the specific infected file if that might help) but I can't find it and even if I did, I don't know what to do with it. Do I just delete it or do I have to do anything else ?
Also prior to that scan, I had very bad network connexion problems. I basically couldn't have access to the web for one of those three reasons :
- Home network but no Internet access
- Unidentified network with Internet access
- Unidentified network and no Internet access
Someone suggested that I might be infected so I did the scan. Now after that, my connexion is much better but not flawless, so I'm wondering if those PUP's might have something to do with it.
Lastly, I've been trying to download .exe files from several hosting sites and everytime I do, in the last few seconds of my download, Mozilla freezes. Seconds later, the file is supposedly on my computer and what I find instead is a file named trzF636.tmp The problem only ever comes with hosting sites and it's K-I-L-L-I-N-G me !

A:Downloads replaced by .tmp files and unable to find some infected files

Hello Lullay -
First PUP = Potentially Unwanted Program (usually a minor problem or unwanted add-on)
As a rule, you can delete these -
"trzF636.tmp" is a randomly named Temporary File that we will now remove.
Please download Temp File Cleaner by Old Timer
Usage Instructions:
Download TFC from the link above and save the file on your desktop.
Close ALL running applications as TFC will terminate them before attempting to clean up the temporary files.
Double-click on the TFC icon - Vista, Win7, & 8, users - Right click and select "Run as administrator"
When the program opens, click on the Start button.
TFC will terminate the Explorer process and all running applications and then begin the process of cleaning out all of your temp folders.
When done, press OK and reboot your computer and finish the cleanup.
Where are you attempting to download .exe files from, and what are they for ??
Please download Security Check by Screen317 from HERE
* Save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.Note: If a security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

I have been trying to encrypt a folder using PGP 9.0.6 and Cryptainer Secure It 3.1.7.

What's weird is that the folder and the files within it will not encrypt and I don't know why? Further more the folder will actually be missing files. Can anybody explain to me? No, I am not setting the applications to erase files after completion.

PGP Conventional Encryption has worked finally. I tried all the obvious stuff first like closing all non-essential volumes (virtual disk that are created and encrypted by PGP), transferring the files to another drive, etc.

On a slightly separate issue. I did have some data corruption involving an older and separate group of files. However I deemed that to a hardware failure or a OS/Software failure. Figured it might provide valid insight.

Update: Now my PGP conventional encryption, non .exe file generation worked. I don't understand why it wouldn't work? Going to rename the source folder and try again. MY encrypted .exe file generation with PGP should work.

I tried again. PGP conventional encryption and PGP Zip both encrypted fine. I tried creating a PGP .exe file and again it failed and files are missing; why?

I've done a full virus scan and spyware scan. No known threats detected that would cause this. I've done two system wipes in the past months. I've also removed, reinstalled, and or repaired the installation of both a... Read more

I've had this computer (HP Pavilion dv2000)for about 4 years and despite my best efforts it's started to get a little bogged down.. SO a while ago I used some free registry cleaning software (Eusing Registry Cleaner, Window Registry Repair & Registry Repair Wizard 2011) to try to get rid of clutter on my lap top in hopes that it would run a little better. I know, I know, let me save everyone the time of telling how stupid it was to do this when I don't know that much about computers! SO as you can imagine after my little cleaning spree I started having some weird problems but mostly related to Internet Explorer. I tried to undo whatever I did but nothing worked. I actually had to stop using IE all together because I kept getting errors and couldn't get to some websites at all. It seemed to be a security setting issue but no matter what changes I made nothing would fix it. So I switched to Firefox which has been a lot better but not perfect. So now its pretty obvious that my computer is missing some files? .... drivers? ....something because I am basically unable to execute most setup files that I download and my Norton anti-virus seems to not be able to run its periodic scans correctly. Lately the computer seems to be worse, buggy, slow, freezes up and I suspect that there is a virus somewhere but no virus scan, adware scan, etc. that I've been able to run (Spy Bot, Bit Defender) finds anything and I'm to afraid to even look at the registry now... Hello friends,

I am in a bit of a bind. I simply clicked the "show hidden files" option on my C:/Users folder. Inside of 20 seconds, my libraries are all rearranged and none of my files are where I put them originally. They have seemingly vanished.

I downloaded ShadowExplorer and thankfully confirmed that I can still open my files when I refer back to an earlier restore point within the program, but when I go to restore the files, they don't go back to where I send them. I don't know where my files are, nor how to access them outside of this ShadowExplorer program.

I did try a regular 'ol Windows system restore, but those don't affect files, so the problem remains. Anyone have any idea what the hell I did and how I might go about fixing it?

Thank you immensely for your consideration.

A:Show hidden files --> Files now missing

Hello Snapdragon, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you have not already, see if checking the "don't show hidden files" option will revert them back to how you had them before.

Double check the libraries to make sure that the folders you had included in them are still included.

In addition, see if setting each library to View -> "Sort by -> Name", "Group by -> (None)", and "Arrange by -> Folder" may reveal them.File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by

Can someone review my HJT log? I did a scan to see if I could find anything suspicious because my computer has recently been a bit laggy and I can't figure out why. I keep it clean with AdAware, Symantec Professional, Spybot, RegClean, and I also defrag at least once a week or every 2 wks. jqs.exe (Java Quick Starter Service entry) This is a new service since the latest java update that seems to run continuously in my processes even though I read online that it was only supposed to run during bootup, then stop. I found this file also in Program Files\Java\jre6\bin.

I started windows, and noticed that 5 of my desktop folders were missing, and all of the files contained within. A search for document and folder names returned nothing (even with advanced search options). One of the missing folders was called "term 1". I created a new folder, and tried to change the name to term 1. A pop-up told me that this destination (desktop) already contained a folder named "term 1"- did I want to merge these folders? I was confused, because I could no longer see the original term 1 folder. I clicked "yes" hoping that a merge would result in a visible term 1 folder, but now the new folder also disappeared. After some intensive searching, I could not find any of the folders/files that were missing. Some other folders/files were still visible on my desktop though.

I restored my computer to a previous checkpoint (from 2 days ago, after a windows update). After reboot, I received a message that the restore was unsuccessful. At this point, all of my desktop folders and files were gone, aside from windows default desktop icons. A search returned no results. I remembered that restore can fail because of an AV program, so I disabled Norton. I tried to undo the restore, which was successful, but no files/folders returned. I then tried to do a restore to a checkpoint from befor... Read more

I apologize in advance for posting this twice. I think I may have put it originally in the wrong area.

I had terrible problems with spyware and some trojans. I received much help here and fixed that right up. No problems with that now but I still have some issues that haven't been corrected and I don't have a windows XP CD. It didn't come with my computer and I never bought one. Here's the problems I've noticed just so far......

1) No search option under start, search. Nothing shows but a blank box and the dog. I have no way to do a search for files or to choose options for a search.

2) In my control panel, when I click on both IE troubleshooting link and Network Diagnostics link does nothing.

3) I have no system restore. When I click on it, it does nothing.

4) I switched to Firefox as my browser since I encountered all of the problems with trojans, etc. so I can't get windows updates unless I use IE. When I click on IE and go to tools, windows update, I get a blank page. Nothing on it. It's the same way if I go directly to the microsoft homepage and try it from there. Blank page again.

5) No way to use windows media player. Apparently I downloaded something with my current version and now it's disabled and had to be uninstalled. I installed a new version but after the set up, I received an error message and it closes right up. I don't even have time to write down what it says.

Now, the programs I have downloaded to fix my problems with ads and trojans or... Read more

A:I think I have missing files or corrupt files

noadaware is not a recommended program there are plenty of free programs available without buying them
did you receive any restore disks with the computer as you can make an xp disk from the restore disk
some comps you have to make your restore disks from the computer yourself, from what i have read
is there a sticker on the back or the side of the computer with the xp serial on it
borrow a copy of xp and in the run box type
sfc /scannow
and press enter
if it finds anything wrong with the system files it will ask for the xp disk to repair them

Okay, I am assuming that you can login to windows just fine so...

1. Start Menu
2. Run
3. Type in: sfc /scannow
4. System will check for corrupted/ missing files. It will prompt you to insert your XP install cd if a file is missing.
5. It will take a while to run, but it whould be worth it :)

I was recently asked to look at a laptop that would not load windows. It booted past the BIO's but frooze getting into the login screen. Repair startup failed. Could not be repaired and told to contact my support team. A memory test allowed me to login to windows. How ever nothing would open. Start menu would work but no applications would start. The Hard drive said it was in a bad state.
I installed Linix Mint and managed to recover all needed files. I then tried to reinstall windows. Both CD's stop at expanding files 0% then errors can not be installed. Files missing. I have seen on the web in might be todo with the speed i recored the image iso at???
I then fired up a linix live cd and deleted the old windows and linix partition with gParted. Now not even Linux will install. If i allow the laptop to boot it will come up grub recovery(linuxs recovery).
seems i cant do any thing now. Have i not partioned the HDD right?
any ideas and thanks

The Hard drive said it was in a bad state.
What reported the hdd to be in a bad state?
Most all hdd manufacturer's have diagnostic tools which you can download as an ISO file, you then can burn this to a CD and boot from it to run the diagnostic test. If you will pull the hdd out and post the manufacturer I will post a link to a site where you can download the file.

I have been running into some issues with my computer for a while and after trying several things I decided to run SFC scan. It claims to have found corrupt files it could not repair but when I followed Option 3 from SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker and opened the sfcdetails.txt file it shows everything as verify complete and no errors or corrupt files. I am attaching the sfcdetails.txt file as well as the cbslog.

I tried uninstalling the cd drive but when i reinstalled it the files were still waiting to be burned.

It is Win XP Home.

Good morning Bleeping Computer community,
I have the strangest thing happening in my Recent Files list on my Windows 10 computer. Files with a ZERO byte size, NO create date, NO modify date and with name in Chinese characters appear in the Recent Files list. This is the third time in 2 weeks I have noticed a batch of such files. Below, I will paste in the file names that appear. I tried copying the names into Google Translate, but that did not provide anything I understood.
These files do NOT exist if I browse to my desktop. They are not it the Recycle Bin either. I have unchecked all the HIDE options for File Explorer.
OS: Windows 10 Home
AV: Avast (purchased)
Make: Lenovo
What I have done so far:
1) Scan with Avast. Nothing
2) Scan with Malware Bytes: A few PUP that I removed.
Since those actions, the most recent batch of them appeared. It seems a few repeat and here are the file names...

Welcome to BC !
Try the programs below to see if they can find what is causing this.
Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan button.
When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next messag... Read more

I've recently upgraded my windows 7 to windows 10 enterprise. I have onedrive account with files synced to cloud, before upgrading i've backed up onedrive files locally in my computer. Some of those files can't be opened after upgrade, formats include
.docx and .xlsx and .png. Most of these files were in direct onedrive main/root folder rather than in subfolders. As i can see those images in subfolders can be opened but not doc and excel files.

How can i view those files again, why have they become corrupt, what could I do in future to prevent these problems

Hey everyone!
Just a few details:
Laptop: HP dv2050us
OS: Windows XP Home SP3

So I was downloading a trial version of nero and my entire computer decided to hate me. I'm pretty sure it was a virus. It changed my registry somehow and has deleted important files to ensure that the computer works.
I'm running XP home and the cute little log-in window doesn't come up anymore (it's just the boring username: password:). Also, I wasn't able to access any of the files in the control panel -- it said I was missing rundll32.exe (I downloaded that and put it in C:/WINDOWS/system32) -- so it works now.

I want to just stick my recovery cds into my computer, but when I do, my computer doesn't read them. I've checked the device manager, and CD-ROM is not there, but I have the option to boot from my CD-Rom drive when I look at my BIOS.

I don't know what to do :(

A:CD/DVD-Rom Drive missing and System Recovery files missing

First thing you're going to want to do is back up any files that you want to keep. Since you can't use your cd drive in windows, you'll have to use a flash drive or an external hard drive. Just copy and paste the files you want to keep onto the storage device (I suggest you do this in safe mode if possible and that you don't copy any (large) folders as there might be hidden files within them that are infected).

Once you've gotten all your files backed up, you have two choices:

1) Follow the steps here and start a new thread in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum (be patient as the analysts are very busy and it can take a while for them to get to you).

2) Wipe the hard drive with a program like dban and reinstall Windows (this is a good guide on how to reinstall windows; if you don't have the disk with all your hardware drivers that came with the computer, then you should also download all the drivers from the manufacturer's website and save them to a cd/flash drive/external hard drive to help speed up the process; if you go this route, you will also have to reinstall any programs that you currently have on your computer).

You could also try to run a repair install of Windows, but, if it really is a virus, then that probably won't help all that much in the long term

to the Bleeping Computer Virus, Trojans, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs Forum. My name is Phil and I am a trainee in the Bleeping Computer Malware Removal Study Hall. If you would permit me to address you by your first name, I would prefer to do that since we will be working together.
I will be assisting you with your computer issues. All of my proposed fixes and suggestions must be approved by a fully-qualified Malware Removal Team member or instructor. This will delay response times somewhat, but I will endeavor to respond within a reasonable time, normally 48 hours after your last post.
I will need some time to review your FRST logs and consult with a Malware Response Instructor. That could take a few days. Once I have done so, I will post back with initial instructions.
Thank you and have a great day.

I am running IE8 on Windows 7 (Home Premium 64bit). My Temporary Internet Files folder is C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5. I have enabled Show Hidden Files and Folders and removed the tick for Hide Protected Operating System files.

I've noticed that streamed .wma file appeared as .dat file in the temporary internet folder. I've tried copying it to the desktop and changed the extension to .wma but it will not play at all. I have the same problem in another laptop running Windows Vista. In Windows XP platform, I have no problem retrieving the streamed files as they are saved in the original file format (i.e. .mp3 or .wma) in the Temporary Internet Files folder.

Please advise.

Thank you & regards

A:.wma files appears as .dat files in Temporary Internet Files folder

I'm have difficulty understanding the real problem since I have always set my browsers to delete at the end of a session, I use CCleaner to delete junk (read stuff in the temp folder).

In any case, you can help us by updating your system specs.

User CP (3rd item in the top menu bar) |
in left-hand column, under Your Profile, Edit System Spec |

Use Speccy - System Information - Free Download
and/or SIW to gather info for filling in the blanks.

Do me a favor and add the word laptop or desktop to the ?system manufacturer? block.

Use the ?Other Info? block for Optical Reader, Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor

Scroll down and click on the SAVE CHANGES button.

Have read an aticle "How to Repair Corrupt or Damaged Windows System Files with System File Checker".Since I don't have a startup disk I changed the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\softeare\Microsoft\Setup SourcePath from D:\ to C:\ . The instructions also required that I copy the i386 file to the root directory. This information comes from usama, Oct. 2006.My problem was in finding the i386 file. Using a search program there were quite a few files with that name, the biggest being in the windows\drivers\cache. All the others only had a few files, mostly dll fliles. Some were backup files too.In any event, when I tried the system checker run I still got the message I needed the installation disk. The idea for this whole thing comes from http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/ho...ile-checker.htm.thanks to anyone who can help.Walt in IndianaI've attached a jpg showing all the i386 files on my computer.

The i386 is a folder that contains all the files that are required to have windows run. It contains drivers and other files. This will be located on your XP Installation CD.
