How private is personal email

Q: How private is personal email

I work for a company that has a very secure computer system because of the type of business they are in. What I would like to know is if I used my computer from work (xp) and went into my personal internet service at home read my personal emails and I sent out personal emails through my home internet service can they read my personal messages and emails?

Preferred Solution: How private is personal email

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: How private is personal email

Hi newb

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Even though you are accessing *your* webmail, you are still using the company's equipment to do so. Your messages will be relayed through their servers, they can and will read your messages if they choose, you may also be placing your job on the line if you use their equipment for personal use.

Bottom line, it is not private at all, so never compose an email concerning your feelings about the boss, a coworker or any office gossip.
It can be printed and used against you.

For better security, is it best to keep it set to Public Network at all times?
Using Bitdefender Internet Security - set firewall settings to Public there as well?

A:Public vs. Private Network- Personal Laptop

No one can answer this question for you as it depends on what you want to do on your network.
I absolutely want to be able to access all of the computers on my home network and media share between them, so setting my home network to be seen as a public network would not be something I could do.
These various settings exist because it is presumed that, if adequate basic security precautions are taken, e.g., you have a strong WiFi password using WPA2 security as well as knowing who can get to your computer(s) and access point, the risk of compromise by the easiest methods are greatly reduced and most people want their machines such that they can share things among them.
If you know that you have only one machine on your network or have no interest in any one machine on your network sharing with any other machine(s) on your network then setting the network type to Public may be something you want to do.

The Bleeping Computer forum showed a tutorial on this but it seemed not to work when I tried it.  Rightclick on a file, select Properties, click the Details tab, click on Remove Properties And Personal Information, choose what one wants to remove.... but then those properties are still shown listed unchanged when one tries to check.  The method does not work.  The Owner and the Computer data are still present as before.

Hi! I'll try to keep this as brief as possible, but it's really difficult to explain. One of my email buddies (fortunately he's an honest person) recently told me that any email I send him, from both my home and work computers, has a ton of garbled info attached to the end of the email... The info includes previous emails I've sent to other people, cell phone bill details, shopping details - ANY and EVERYTHING I do online is connected to my emails to him. It doesn't matter what email I use... My Outlook account at work, Gmail, Aol, RR... it all attaches info to EVERY email I send to him. Even the "Read Receipt" he receives when I click on one of his emails has info attached to it. !?!?!?!!! IT'S EXTREMELY DISTURBING! And he also receives info from my family members who use my computer at home, so it's not just MY info he's receiving.

I do know that he is on a "Whitelist" with the company he works for (for a very important reason), so he's not bound to the security that everyone else is protected by. He's had his computer restaged twice and it still keeps happening. He uses Outlook and it happens with his desktop AND his laptop at work.

I thought about talking to my IT Helpdesk at work, but haven't yet since this is happening from EVERY computer I use, so I know it's not a specific computer issue. Is there, perhaps, something that my friend has done, without my knowing, to gain access to my per... Read more

I can't add our shared org email using the normal outlook setup. I tried POP/IMAP, it worked but the emails and subfolders are incomplete. And the shared org email is associated with my personal org email, whenever I tried to remove the associated folders,
it say's "This group of folders is associated with an email account. To remove the account, click the File Tab, and on the Info tab, click Account Settings. Select the e-mail account and than click Remove."
Then I tried a lot of times to remove my email and back again, it is still there. I also removed the additional mailboxes in the screenshot below.

I got an email sent to an aol address that I never get junk emails from. No one knows I have it, I've never advertised it on aol, or to websites, people, etc.. but somehow this morning I got a letter from some company wanting to do something with my mortgage. They had my full name and home address in the letter. I'm really confused by how they could've ended up with all that... the fact that they sent it to this unknown address is really puzzling..

Does anyone know how this happened or has this happened to anyone else?

I need to buy a nice Windows 7 system, but sadly cannot find the specs I need at my price point.

If I should go with Windows 8.1, I understand that I *need* to have a Microsoft Account for email, which would be on the cloud and not local (and private,) like I presently have with Windows Live Mail 2012 for Windows 7.

Is there any way to easily get around this in 8.1? Current email is POP3 or I can even do IMAP.

A:Is Windows 8.1 that awful for private (local) email?

You don't *need* to have a Microsoft mail account to use Win 8.1, but you definitely should use one to sign into your PC when you go through setup. In Win 8.1 everything in the OS, apps, and Microsoft ecosystem is synced around your Microsoft account login. Using a "local" account instead, which is possible, but will just cause too much pain (IMHO). Many of the apps and features in Win 8.1 want a Microsoft email account login.

That being said, you do not have to use the Win 8.1 Mail app for your personal/primary email. You still have the desktop and should be able to install about any email client, including Windows Live Mail. Windows Live Mail and the Win 8.1 Mail app will not work together, but you can just ignore the mail app and I think you could use Windows Live Mail on the desktop as you've been doing.

Maybe someone will correct me because I haven't tried this, but the desktop in Win 8.1 seems to work as it always has before.

Hi everyone,

I need to set up an email service on a dedicated server I'm buying for my company (I think we're going to go for one from the Dell PowerEdge series). The problem is that I have very little idea of how this might be done, or if it's possible at all.

when i use outlook the 'from' address is my hotmail one.

I have recently encountered recurring problems with my ATT/Yahoo email. Turned out that, evidently, it was not a browser problem since the same problems of looping and locking out occurred on FF, Chrome, and Safari. the problem was remedied, then returned, then remedied again, but then other problems and annoyances have become too big a nuisance.
I have had an att.net email address from inception and don't wish to change it. (I have a gmail acct as well, but less active.)
I used to use Outlook Express, which then became Live Mail.
What I want is a free email "client" as the term goes, that is web-based for access anywhere, preferably cross-platform to sync with my Ipad & phone, and that at least allows an option to block all advertising (probably for a fee?), or one that works with AdFender or similar blocker (as Yahoo does not). Maybe using an "alias" on gmail is possible, as long as my address still appears in correspondence as from ~att.net.
My browser of choice has been FF, but some commentators found the new version to "buggy". I don't use IE, and I don't care to be a pawn to the Google cyber-empire. Safari may be acceptable; I use it on my Ipad. My laptop runs on Win 7.

Suggestions, please? Thanks.

Conflicting wants. An email client is a program or App that runs on your computer/tablet/smart phone while "web-based" implies using a browser for web mail access.

You started out talking about a mail service, brought up email clients, and ended asking for suggestions for a browser. For what do you really want suggestions?

A:Email spammer has personal info

Welcome to BC...
A bit late to be concerned about your info being on the web. You made a huge error in even opening the email. Now, most likely, the spammer
knows he has a valid email address to spam due to a beacon hidden in the email. Clicking on links in emails or opening attachments are dangerous, too.
NEVER open an email from unknown source and NEVER open an attachment unless you are 100% sure of what it contains.
That info could of been gotten from numerous sources.

How can you put your personal signature on the computer where you can use it to sign a document such as a proposal?

I have seen emails or attachments that had the personal signature but can not figure out how they did it.

I am not talking about a signature that would have info on it but a copy of your actual handwritten signature.

A:Personal signature on email or Word

For a written look, use a cursive font. Take a screenshot of it and save as gif or png so you can make the background transparent if you want to use it on colored backgrounds (transparency doesn't matter if you only use it on white).
Resize and crop the pic to the desired finished size and just insert it.

If you want your actual signature, scan it in and do the same.

Being the most tech savvy person in my company (coffee shop/bakery), I've been tasked with changing the forwarding email of our websites to one email. I don't have a lot of information from the owner (ie. backend info, hosts, etc). So I'm trying to assess what the process looks like so I can just gather the information I need and do it without gathering more information than I have to because finding the information will (I suspect) be more time consuming than actually implementing this change.

basically [email protected] forwards to someone's personal gmail which should forward to a different email but responses should still show up as [email protected]

Any tips would be super valuable.

Should they just invest in a full time or regularly contracted web developer? Probably, but they haven't so.... I'm learning as I go. LOL!

OK, how are you accessing your emails (web based or email client)?

I don't see anything wrong in the log here. Did you run an antivirus scan?

You said it does (do you mean doesn't) shutdown? Are those other accounts also for the same email provider as the primary? Does the primary have a lot of emails stored (assuming it's a email client)?

This might be more of a software issue than spyware. So if your antivirus program doesn't find anything, post this in software or internet forum instead. Talking about antivirus programs. Outlook .pst folders transfer

? I'm trying to copy my Outlook email personal folders, structure as well as content, from my Lenovo T410s laptop(Windows XP, Office 2007) to a Dell desktop(Windows 7, Office 2010).
? I have two separate sets of files, one labelled Archives and the other labelled Personal Folders, both of which have multiple subfolders.
? I've now copied both(using a memory stick), to the Dell desktop.
? I tried the Import and Export feature and also tried the Open Data File feature
? The Archive folder gets copied with all the sub-folders, but I can only access those if the memory stick is inserted into a USB port, even though the Archive folder is saved on the Dell desktop
? When I do the same thing with the Personal Folders, a ?Merge? folder opens but it doesn?t have any content
? I do see the default Personal Folders on the left side of the Outlook screen
What should I do?

I have a personal email address ([email protected], for example) which I would like to use for my Microsoft account. When I try to do this I get errors similar to:

"You can't use @stuff.me in your Microsoft account email address. Please try a different email address."

depending on which site I'm trying to do this on (xbox.com, microsoft.com, etc.). Normally I really wouldn't have a problem with Microsoft doing it's own thing, but if I'm supposed to use this account on my personal computer now (with Windows 8 just over the
horizon), why am I not allowed to use the email that I want to use?

The better question is, how do I get around this? I've noticed restrictions and questions are different depending on which Microsoft site you try to create your account on. Is there a way to make an account using my personal email? Or a way to make my personal
email the primary one after creating the account?

Windows 7 seems to be unable to effectively identify my VPN connection. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit. I've installed OpenVPN 2.1RC20 (the latest release of OpenVPN). OpenVPN creates a virtual network connection using the "TAP-Win32 Adapter V9". When I connect to the VPN, I am not prompted to identify the network. This is apparently due to the fact that the network to which I'm connecting does not supply a default gateway.  That is, I'm connecting to a private network and I only need access to the private nodes on the network.  For example, here are the relevant lines in the routing table after connecting:
IPv4 Route Table
Active Routes:
Network Destination Netmask Gateway Interface Metric 25 <-- this is my internet connection 30 <-- this is the VPN gateway On-link 286 On-link 286 On-link 286 30 <-- this is the remote private network

I have no idea about other location where post this Q.
I'm using Private Character Editor (EUDCEDIT) to create own characters.
Main problem is in displaying them. It looks like not whole character is displayed, is double size of character width in monospace fonts and also there are in many fonts little spaces between, look at:
Here is one of own characters - it uses whole editing area - symbol of restore button:

in Notepad I have selected DejaVu Sans Mono font and it's displaying this:

So, you can see that top part of character (and not only this) is not displayed and between reverse characters is space, also character is 2? wide than normal character

This displays Segoe UI font in Notepad++

you can see that now are characters without spaces, but top area is not displayed too, but now looks better - like 1?1 size instead 2?1 (double-width)

Wordpad displays this at largest font size (72) Calibri:

again the same: top part of character is not displayed.

So, where I do mistake?

Also when I link characters with one of fonts it allows to save it with extension TTE, but it's not possible to use after Windows reinstall and my library of characters is larger and larger - this means at reinstall again manually copy & paste each character by EUDCEDIT... is possible to solve this too?

Thank you for all.

When I am using Hotmail - NortonInternetSecurity alerts me to the fact that my "personal" (ISP) email address is being sent to Hotmail. I get tired of blocking it and change my application to Hotmail in InternetExplorer (which is a drag if I want to activate eMail elsewhere ... changing back and forth)

Does anyone know why this happens?
Many thanks

A:NortonInternetSecurity catches: personal eMail address being sent to Hotmail

Norton's internet security setting alerts you when you are about to send pre selected personal information. If you are getting a warning when going into hotmail I am assuming that your hotmail address and your isp address have a common name in them (yours maybe). It sounds as you have set up internet security with your e-mail address, to warn you when you type it anywhere, and you are typing a similar thing to get into your hotmail account so it throws up a warning. It should only recognise exactly what you've asked it to recognise. If you have asked it to recognise your complete e-mail address (ie you typed the full address in the security settings) then I don't understand.
You can set it to recognise bits of your address though.
So if your name is mugsy and your isp e-mail address is [email protected], you can set it to warn you everytime you are about to send "mugsy" somewhere.
When you go to hotmail you will maybe then type [email protected]. This will throw up a warning that you are about to send your e-mail [email protected] address to hotmail.
It depends what you have set it up as, but something will be common to the 2 addresses. What is it?

Satya Nadella wants to know what took you so long? (Joke, sorry)
Microsoft has been pinning their hopes on this very scenario. The only solution I know is really a compromise to something IT found acceptable: They created an app specific to this single purpose for their employees on the level where BYOD is not an option (departmental heads and higher are issued Windows Mobile devices). Like I said it's kind of a solution in that it allows IT some form of control that's acceptable rather than moving the company to Windows Mobile across the board which gives you the amount of control and level of security IT wants.
Sorry if that's not the simple solution you were hoping for. As long as Microsoft still has real hope of getting traction in the mobile OS marketplace you're unlikely to see it from them

I would like the service to provide IMAP, as that's how I sync my mail with Thunderbird and AppleMail. I did try Outlook, but I need to use their web interface for emails to be sent as my personal email address set as an alias. Through Thunderbird, it sends as the Outlook address.

On a slightly separate note....with IMAP, if I reach the capacity of my mailbox and purge some emails, will they remain in my offline email client?

A lot of spam (but not all) comes from "harvesting" programs that spammers use to "harvest" email addresses left on Internet pages. Some spammers can also harvest addresses from "Forwarded" emails.

So, to eliminate the Internet page source of spam, there are three things you can do:

1) NEVER leave your "personal" email address on the Internet.
Now there are some sites that absolutely INSIST that you leave an email address - like when joining discussion groups, when making a purchase, setting up your profile for your Health Insurance web site, Online banking, etc.

For that requirement, see point #3.
2) On discussion group postings, always "munge" your mail address if you want to post it.
"Munge" means to disguise it. For example, one of my email addresses (see point #3 for why I have more than one) is rbjamie [at] gmail.com. Notice that I typed out "at" instead of using the @ symbol. That's "munging". Most harvesters look for the @ symbol to get email addresses, so if you leave out the @ symbol by typing "at", the harvesters will not identify it.

However, spammers are getting more sophisticated tools, and harvesters may now look for "at" when it's typed out - which is why I put it in brackets too. But then they may look for "at" in brackets too - it's a real cat-and-mouse game.

A:Tip on how to keep spam out of your "personal" email address . . .

Forgot to add another option for those "Forwarded" emails that contain a lot of addresses.

If "Auntie" insists on still forwarding her emails without removing all the addresses or using the bcc feature, then tell her this:

You are changing your email address to: (insert your INTERNET EMAIL ADDRESS) and you will no longer get her emails at the address she has. So tell her to forward those emails to your "new" email address (that would be your INTERNET EMAIL ADDRESS). And tell her to put your "new" email address in her address book and delete the current one.

This way at least she will be forwarding stuff that's likely to generate spam to an address that you already use for a repository for junk email. So if it gets contaminated from her forwarding . . . so what?? . . . it's ALREADY contaminated probably (from leaving it as your email address on the Internet).

And too, if Auntie is not too computer savvy (and most, BUT NOT ALL, who forward chain emails and joke emails are NOT computer savvy), you don't want her to have your "personal" email address in her address book, BECAUSE IF SHE GETS ONE OF THOSE WORM VIRUSES (AND THAT'S LIKELY) THAT GOES THROUGH HER ADDRESS BOOK AND MAILS ITSELF OUT TO ALL IN HER ADDRESS BOOK, you want that virus to show up in your Internet Email account.

Of course, it really doesn't matter where a virus shows up - AND I'M ASSUMING YOU HAVE AN ANTIVIRUS ON-ACCESS SCANNER ... Read more

I understand that private browsing is not a means for total anonymity online, that the websites you visit, your ISP or anyone between you and the site (from someone running a wi-fi point you are connecting through to someone running one of the major links within the structure of the internet) can see where you have been, but what about those with physical access to your computer.
Imagine the following scenario: a hacker has physical access, the best forensic tools and as much time as he wants to pick deep into the operating system of a computer, he has the best technology for recovering deleted data but cannot in any way get information from your ISP or other people/organisations which were between you and the sites you visited. Can this hacker find out where you have been?
Lets assume he didn't put a keylogger or any other form of malware onto the computer while you were using it, the first time he ever knew of your existence was the day he got hold of your machine and began his attempts to find what you had been doing in the days, weeks months and years before he gained physical access to the machine.
Let's assume he can bypass the windows password and immediately get full admin rights on the computer, and that he is not restricted in any way by any security feature on the machine. He has full control and abilities, but the data he wants to find was stuff done when the browser (be it FF, chrome or even IE) was in private mode.

I'm working in an office that that has a building network provided by the building management. We're using a D-Link DSS-5+ switch to connect to the building network (192.168.1.x) and using 4 static IP addresses assigned to us by the building managment. I would like to swap out the DSS-5+ and replace it with a DI-604 router to create my own private network segment (192.168.0.x).

I configured the WAN side of the DI-604 to use one of the static IP addresses assigned to us and added the primary/alt. DNS addresses to the static IP configuration. I configured the LAN side to use the DHCP server in its default configuration (192.168.0.x network handing our IP addresses in the range of I reconfigured the 4 desktop PCs running Windows XP to use DHCP to obtain IP/DNS addresses.

All the PCs can access each other on the 192.168.0.x segment. None of the PCs can access the Internet. I can ping all the gateways ( and, but can't ping the DNS addresses or any Internet address.

Is this a limitation of private address segments, the DI-604, or have I misconfigured the router? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A:Creating private network segment off of another private network segment using DI-604

There is no limitation. You seem to have configured correctly. It should work.

You might try as the DNS address (if that is the building gateway address).

Maybe you should try a PC with that static IP and check it is still allowed to the internet.

Excel will not open my personal.xlsb file but if i create a copy entitled "Copy of Personal.xlsb" it will be recognized. This is quite irritating.

A:Personal Xlsb wont open but "Copy of Personal.xlsb" will

So I assume you tried renaming the original Personal.xlsb file and creating a new one?

You should also be able to go to the Excel startup directory and manually open the file in order to save/export any existing code modules to a new workbook.

I'm having a bit of a weird issue with track changes showing some author names and not others, apparently without regard to the document settings:

Doc was originally created in Word 2007; the "Remove personal information from file properties on save" box is UNCHECKED and grayed out.
I am using Word 2010. When I make changes or comments, my name shows up as the author and this information is successfully saved with the file. Others are able to see my name as the author.
My colleague is using Word 2007. When he makes changes or comments and hits save, he shows up as "%USERNAME%" (but my name stays on my comments). I have checked his settings and the "Remove personal info" box is UNCHECKED and grayed out.
Is this some sort of compatibility issue between Word 2007 and Word 2010? Something else? Any ideas? Any help is appreciated.

Also, in case it matters, I and my colleague are both using Windows 7.

I have a situation where someone has 2 email addresses. One of them is now redundant and I have deleted it from the People section. However, when I am set to make a new email to that person and type the first letter of their name, in the pop up window (that you can click on) their old email address still appears.
How do I delete this from that list? Can find no way to do so.

A:Outlook Email - Deleting Wrong Email Entry when starting new email

In new email, start typing the address you want to remove. When you have enough characters for auto complete to show it (sometimes one letter is enough), use DOWN ARROW key on keyboard to select the address in question and press DEL key.

That's it.

I'd like to know if there's someway of limiting the information about me that sites/ counters etc can record - for example if it's possible to get a private IP and how?
If there's any other way of limiting the amount of personal info that goes out, I'm all ears. (A bizarre sight, but most attentive).

thank you
