ThinkCentre M92p - Manufacturing Boot Sequence

Q: ThinkCentre M92p - Manufacturing Boot Sequence

Last week, I updated the BIOS on the machine to the latest version. Yesterday (15/08), I noticed that the 'System Version' was set to 'Lenovo Product', so I loaded up DOS and used the Amidos tool to adjust it. It set the new value successfully, so I rebooted the machine and walked away. A few minutes later, I noticed the machine wasn't back online. I went to check on the machine and noticed that it had no output to the display, but two beeps (similar-sounding to during a BIOS update) occurred every 10 - 15 seconds. I killed the power to the machine. Upon booting, there were 2 POST beeps, but no display. I eventually managed to get the following message by unplugging the Hard Drive. And have been able to get it since with the Hard Drive plugged in.If no button is pressed, the machine turns off. It then powers itself back on a few seconds later and starts beeping, as described earlier. The system will not boot into Windows. I cannot PXE boot. I can load into BIOS, but all the settings are reset as soon as the system boots. I followed the steps in this document, on page 267. Unfortunately, this didn't work. I have also tried; reseating the RAM & swapping the power supply. Neither of these worked. Any help pointing me in the right direction would be massively appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I tried updating the BIOS on my M92p tiny and now I don't see the bios screen or any output. I have tried the BIOS recovery steps in the manual:- The system doesn't beep after a few minutes with a USB BIOS recovery key (tested and usb is bootable on another pc)- The system turns on but doesn't show any output or errors- I burned a BIOS CD but when plugging the CD drive into the internal sata + sata power it doesn't get powered- I tried the CD drive while being powered from another pc and then plugging the sata in - didn't do anything- The system will ramp up the fan for a split second and then the fan slows down and the system stays on- Sometimes the system will reboot a few times and then go off completely. - Taking the RAM out gives the RAM error beep code- The CPU gets hot so it must be powered at least?- I left the CMOS battery out overnight I have a vga cable plugged in, it's possible that it's outputting on the displayport so I'm not seeing anything but I find that very unlikely? Anything I've missed or could try? If not, any idea how much a replacement motherboard is?  Cheers

Hi there,I recently got a ThinkCentre M92p (model 3227K75) with a CPU i5-3470 (3.2Ghz), 32Gb of RAM, large SSD and an nVidia GeForce GT1030.I have seen lot's of not up to dated forum regarding the upgrade options for this computer so I hope you don't mind if I make this question again: what's the best upgrade I can do, with appreciable result, for CPU and GPU? Other question: can I go for 64Gb of RAM? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!!Gennaro

I got a refurb M92P with (according to the specs) an 80 watt PS (?). To upgrade I thought I'd at least try the Lenovo 240 watt (since the footprint is identical). Anyway, got it, hooked up the 24 to 14 pin adapter cable, and plugged it in. The unit wouldn't boot, kept turning on/off every couple seconds, so I shut it down and replaced the original PS. Anyone heard of that happening? It seems odd that I read of other people hooking up 3rd party PSs with the adapter cable with no problem, yet a Lenovo  made PS does this? Also, I'd hate to buy a 3rd party PS and experience the same thing. At least with the Lenovo PS the vendor accepts returns. Any insights appreciated.

I'm sure there is a storage limitation, but not as nearly as low as 1 TB.  (And it maybe more a function of the OS.)

Is this the case? And can anything be done about it? ie BIOS upgrade?...

I'm trying to add a dual-eSATA controller to my M92 model 3209. It's a PCI-express card. I've tried both the x16 and x1 (or x4, or whatever it is) and the PC just refuses to see it - it doesn't show up in the Windows 10 device manager (either as a drive controller or an unknown device) or in the BIOS. This card worked successfully in both a Dell Optiplex and an older M91 PC, so I'm fairly sure that's not the issue (it showed up in the BIOS in both of those). I have tried updating the BIOS but it didn't help. Also tried resetting the BIOS to optimal defaults, also with no results. For what it's worth, I added a PCI (non-express) sound card to the same PC, and it worked first time. Any ideas?

Just wondering if, and how, I can troubleshoot an oddity I have. We run a number of this model Lenovo and decided they would be better with 8Gb of RAM, up from the original 4Gb. All went smoothly until one PC emitted a musical alert on booting after the upgrade, which stopped when I removed the new RAM. I checked I had the new RAM in the correct slot, blue just like the original stick. I tried the suspect stick in the next box and it is fine. Where do I start looking to find out what is going on? Regards, Granville.

A:Thinkcentre m92p memory upgrade failed

I would repace the original 4GB with upgrade memory, test to see if it boots, and then put original memory into upgrade slot and test, if it fails, that slot is probably bad.   You could use it in the other bank, won't be as fast, but you'll have 8GB.

After any memory upgrade or change, I suggest running a couple of passes of MemTest86, the free version, to ensure all is well.

Run a 'sys info' and break into BIOS setup, the model number should be there on both main pages.

USB 3.0 ports (back then), have a blue 'tongue' inside the port, 2.0 have black.

Can I simply swap the current i5-3470 for an i7-3770? Will it work or will I have issues? I mean like the BIOS not "seeing" the processor etc...Also, how much of an improvement in speed / graphics ability could I see with such a "swap".Anyone knowing an answer for sure I would wholeheartedly welcome his/her help.

Yes, upgrade to i7-3770 (the top processor for this model) is possible, and as it's the same wattage as existing i5, there are no cooler issues.  But benchmarks show less than a 20% improvement, and in my past experience, you need 35%+ to make a noticable difference.   IMO, you'd be better off changing the HDD to a SSD for a performance improvement.

If it can be removed, is there any benefit to keeping it in place for other functions, etc? 2.) Im not sure which type of SSD to get. Hello I own the M92p Desktop (ThinkCentre)/Serial Number: MJ09MZC/Machine Type Model: 3227DU7           I have transplanted the motherboard into a atx case to add a larger power supply. The motherboard is fully functional and only powers on with the existing FPC from the lenovo case                     (yeah I have to leave both cases open to power it on, it ain't pretty folks).           The proprietary one piece connector from the lenovo only fits on the motherboard. Although the front panel connectors from the new atx case are the regular [pwrswitch] [hdd led+] [hdd led-] etc.. and do not power on the system.           From my understanding these FPC's are only signal and ground wires, I need the correct combination to power on my system. My question is how do I align the atx case FPC's in order to accomodate the motherboard in the same fashion the FPC's from the Lenovo case do? Thank you for your time and patience. Also if anyone could link me to bios and chipset updates for this system I would appreciate it as well.

My thinkcentre won't boot, all I get is an error "FW status recovery" on black screen. The problem started after I unpluged it and move to a new location.I found out the onboard battery (CR2032) was dead, and replaced it with a new one, but the problem still persist. I tried resetting the CMOS using the jumpers.I now installed the latest BIOS software (using CD) and still the same issue.I can access the BIOS setup using F1, but nothing can get me past the boot operation (I can confirm latest BIOS was installed). Any idea on what is corrupt and need recovery?I tried resetting BIOS to default values.  Are there any settings on the BIOS that I can try? Is there a way to update the firmware using a USB/CD boot media??  I can't boot into windows to use the Intel Firmware tool. It's a ThinkCentre M92p type 3238. Thanks for any assistance.

The GTX 750 Ti could work with a SFF M92p.   Upgrade to the latest BIOS beforehand, CD ISO method is most reliable.   Check that there aren't any taller heatsinks on the motherboard that could interfere with the graphics card (refer to photos of the card.)

Since your system is older, to ensure the necessary airflow, clean the front air intake and fan with vacuum and canned compressed air, jam the fan with a cable tie or similar so it can't spin and over-speed.  Same for CPU fan and heat sink, and vac the intake and rear exhaust of the power supply.

I can confirm that this MSI brand low-profile  GTX 750 Ti 2GB  card works perfectly in my M93p SFF machine without upgrading the PSU:   MSI N750-Ti-2GD5TLP

Measuring the power draw running Prime95 (CPU benchmark) , FurMark (GPU benchmark) , charging mobile phone via USB and copying large files at the same time , it stays below 190W.   Have been running this for several hours. I have also been playing Fallout 4 (FullHD, ultra textures, 60 FPS) for 100 hours without any problems.   As the case is quite compact, I was worried about the temperature but it stays below 80C for the GPU at full power over extended periods of time (about 25C ambient temp in the room).

Installation is ok. Just mount the low profile bracket and move the PCIe 1x WiFi card (if you have one) into another slot.  Preferably le... Read more

There have been a few threads about the propreitary 14pin PSU connectors and that there's no aftermarket support for upgrades. But it's been a little while, and Lenovo (around the office, my staff are calling them "Le-No-No" now) hasn't change policy, or offered an upgrade.

We have just received several of these i7 PC's and they all have the useless 280w PSU's. Those are severely limiting in what video cards can be installed, as anything over 55w will knock the PSU over. That means, no decent cards. A Quadro 2000 is, at 51W, about as far as we can go.

My CDW rep has been working to find a solution for us, but without any success. So I'm bringing it to the community before I have to re-evaluate our desktop hardware choice.

Has anybody made either an adapter or a PSU that will work on the Lenovo 14-pin motherboards?

(Oh, and yes, I've read http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/A-M-and-Edge-Series-ThinkCentre/M92P-14pin-power-supply-connector/m-p/84... . No help there. Thought I'd post a clear question here in hopes that someone has started making adapters.)

Hello, the weirdest thing has happened. I've read all kinds of posts of the nVidia GT 1030 card being compatible with fairly recent ThinkCentres, but after 2 hours of exhausting attempts I still could not start my M92P SFF desktop with a GT 1030. A few years back the excruciatingly slow stock HDD was replaced with an Intel 535 Series 480 GB SSD, and the first thing I saw after installing the GT 1030 video card was the message 'Operating system not found'. The SSD disappeared from BIOS. Removed the GT 1030 and everything is fine. Checked that the SSDs BIOS was of the latest version, updated the PC's BIOS, found out that it was booting in legacy non-UEFI mode. Converted the system drive to GPT, switched to UEFI booting and everything worked without the video card. I was sure the problem was UEFI-related, because even without the GT 1030, prior to switching to GPT, when attempting boot in UEFI mode, I was getting exactly the same message 'No operating system found', the BIOS did non detect the SSD. Having done all this, I plug in the GT 1030 and bam! Same crap. The BIOS does not see the SSD! But why? More this time, not only it did not detect the now GPT SSD, but a couple of seconds after powering up the M92P would not turn on at all, no matter how many times I pressed/for how long held the power button. It was making some sound from the speaker though, as if it was trying to power up, but couldn't, it was not an error beep. So I had to remove the GT 1030 once again an... Read more

I have been using a Display Port to HDMI Cable with my M92p for a long time now to connect to my 2 Philips Monitors. I now wanted to connect my M93p the same way and I'm now struggling to do so. I just cant get a signal out through Display Port no matter what I do neither in Bios nor on Windows. And on the PC side, my Monitors are not recognized at all. As my setup works with the M92p, the cable and Monitor are OK I guess. Why does M93p fail? Apart from VGA, the Display Ports are the only other Option. I read that M92p has DIsplay Port Version 1.1. and M93p Version 1.2: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkCentre-A-E-M-S-Series/M93P-Displayport-1-1-or-1-2/td-p/2174499 But I also read that Cable wise this schouldn't make any difference. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort#Overview WHats the problem here? WHy is Display Port Output not working on M93p while it does work on M92p?

Lenovo Thinkcentre m92p sff (3227) makes Beep sound when powered on since I updated the bios to the version: 9sjw99usa.exe.Also since I replaced the stock lenovo Fans with Noctua fans it makes a second beep (so 2 beep sounds total and there is a fan error in the bios event log), when I connect back the stock fans it makes only 1 beep again. I dont know if the noctua fans would cause the same behaviour on the older bios version since I replaced the fans after the bios update , but I know that with the old bios version there wasnt any beep on startup with the stock fans.I read somewhere that lenovos can give errors in the bios event log with other fans when their rpms are slower then the original fans rpm were, that doesnt explain the single beep on start up with the stock fans though.I wasnt able to find any older bioses for my model to experiment with them on the lenovo support page only the newest bios is offered for download and I wasnt able to find a way to turn of the self test / beep post on start in the bios. I remember that some oem pc systems had key combination for hidden bios settings, does someone know of such a combination to enable hidden settings for my device, or any other way to turn of the annoying beep sounds?I also replaced the stock PSU  with a Be!Quiet! TFX Power 2 300W Gold + 24 to 14 adapter right after I updated the bios. Bould the first beep on start be because of the new PSU? But how would the System know its not the stock PSU? I... Read more

I'm getting the following error when trying to establish an internet connection on my M92p Desktop ThinkCentre. The problem goes away for a while when I reinstall the drivers by pointing the search location to a "Intel« Ethernet Adapter Complete Driver Pack" I downloaded from Intel's website, spesifically for the 82579LM Gigabit Network controller. It's completely random when the problem comes back again and the internet stops working. How do I troubleshoot the source of this problem and get rid of it completely? I have tried the drivers from Lenovo, and they make no difference. Using a D-Link W-LAN dongle atm.

I'm trying to automate the process of flashing the BIOS version for all models during a SCCM Task Sequence.with all of them - all is looking great! we run "wflash2x64.exe [filename].rom /ign /sccm /quiet", then initiate a restart task, the BIOS gets updated and the Task Sequence continues. the only issue we have is with M93 and M900 that behaves differently. we downloaded the latest BIOS versions and when we run the restart command it just continues the task sequence without performing the upgrade.if we remove the /sccm from the command, the machine restarts automatically and the BIOS gets updated but then we kill the TS progress and have to start over.I've seen some blogs here and there that talks about using wpeutil shutdown during the task sequence, but corrent me if I'm mistaken, this will also break the whole TS progress... my questions are:1. why these models specifically behaves differently than any other Lenovo model?what's the purpose if the /sccm argument if the admin needs to do other manual steps that aren't listed anywhere officially?P.S - it will also behave that way if we will try to run the flash command from a running operating system and not just from PE 2. maybe I just missed something and there's a more fluent solution for BIOS flashing via a Task Sequence?

I see a lot of documentation about running BIOS updates in SCCM with the WINUPTP bios exectuable.  Unlucky for me the M710q seems to use flash2.exe.  I can't find any documentation on exit codes, or successful run sequences.  I've got 200 machines I need to flash by task sequence for quick deploy.  Can anyone help me?

Hi, anyone knows wether a 120 MM CPU Cooler will phyiscally fit in a M92p Tower case? The cooler is 158 mm high in total. I think the Thinkcentre case is 175 MM wide. But You also have to consider that there is a Motherboard and CPU inbetween. WIll that fit or do I have to go for a smaller 92MM Cooler? Anyone tried this before?

The first thing to do is disassemble it again and retrace your steps for a missed connectionIt's been mentioned that it could be a BIOS issue:http://www.ihatedell.net/forum/phpBB2/dell...-67-t11282.html

Hi I updated my Lenovo ThinkCentre m92p tiny 3237-A1G to the BIOS version 9SKT59A.I use an OCZ SSD with GRUB2 and Linux/Win7 dual boot (GPT/UEFI) without any problem. After the BIOS update there was SecureBoot enabled and I couldn't obviously boot GRUB2.Then I disabled SecureBoot and changed the Boot order, but when I try to include the SSD with x it disappears in the list of the excluded boot devices but don't appear in the included devices. Now I am only able to boot via USB stick where a grub2 is also installed. I am pretty sure this is a BIOS bug!Anyone else can confirm that or solved such a probem? Cheersmijenix

Hello, I also have same problem on Lenovo M92p 3212-BL3 with BIOS version 9SKT39A. I use an OCZ SDD Vertex 2 with Windows 7 x64 only. The SSD disappears from the list on included and excluded boot SATA devices. The SATA ports still appears but with empty device.  It seems BIOS issue, hope Lenovo will fix this issue ASAP.

Hello. I recently bought a used Lenovo M92p. It booted just fine and recognized my GPU with no issues, but the BIOS had a password so I had to reset the CMOS. After that it booted to bios but my display remained black. I tried plugging it to motherboards display port but still no image. So I tried unplugging everything and booting with one ram stick and it booted to bios. After putting it back I understood that the issue was GPU. As soon as I plugged in the GPU it won't display anything. I tested it on another PC and the GPU was fine(it's a Quadro 2000D if it helps) so I tried my other spare GPU's including GT 210 but the same result. So I ignored the need for GPU and tried booting it without. All of my installation USB's ended up with winload.exe and winload.efierrors(tried to boot both UEFI and Legacy) and all of my DVD's just got stuck at Windows logo and wouldn't even display the loading circle or any error message. I am stuck. I tried to download multiple ISO's from multiple sources with no luck. I have heard that Lenovo motherboards come with some sort of security stuff that can prevent it from booting but I have no clue what it is and how it works. Please help since I have ran out of ideas. Thanks

I am trying to install Win XP SP3 on the M92p (tiny) but I am unable to boot from external DVD that was shipped with the device from Lenovo. I've tried a number of BIOS options but no matter what the drive is excluded from the boot order. I've also tried updating the BIOS which returned the same result. Any ideas why? Is there something I'm overlooking? In the meantime I'm figuring out USB Boot as it appears to allow a boot from a USB Key.
