0x124 crash after playing video/music

Q: 0x124 crash after playing video/music

A friends PC keeps crashing after a few hours of usage (watching movies, listening to music). I've been attempting to troubleshoot it but I'm not to sure about how to find the cause of the problem. Based on my google search, which led me here, it's caused by either RAM, HDD, Drivers or overheating. I unfortunately can't get the dump right now, but I did get the info from the event log.

The computer has rebooted from bugcheck. The bugcheck was 0x00000124 (0x000000..., 0xfffffa8003560038, 0x00000000b2000000, 0x000000001040080f).

Problem Event Name: Bluescreen
OS Version 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033
Service Pack: 1_0
Product: 256_1

Does this info narrow down the issue, or is it just generalizing the problem down to what's been stated before?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I'm really hoping some of you lovely people here are able to help me fix this because I haven't been able to do anything aside from browse the internet and work on school projects since this started happening.

To my knowledge, this error has been caused by some hardware issue; but it seems to only appear when playing games (mainly counter strike) and after restarting following the initial crash. So, I've been crashing twice for every time I try to play any game now.

All of my drivers (including SATA, PCIe, USB, etc) have been updated to the most recent versions, and I have not changed or installed any new hardware in the last several months. The first crash came after installing and playing Endless Legend for the first time through Steam (which included the .NET Framework 4.5 install), and a brief attempt at playing osu!, which I uninstalled and thoroughly purged from my system.

Specs:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Processor: AMD 1090T Black Edition (3.21 GHz)
Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth 990FX
RAM: 16GB DDR3
Video cards: nVidia GeForce GTX 760 and nVidia GeFroce GTX 550 Ti (running as dedicated PhysX)

Windows is installed on a 128GB SSD from Kingston (I forget the exact model).

I know that you guys (probably) don't need this, but I'll include my WhoCrashed dump anyway. This is only the last couple errors, but there has been at least 18 BSODs in the last 48 hours. The most common one has been 0x124, but if anyone wants the rest of the codes I can ... Read more

This is not a "must have", but it is a lot of fun. You can play a video as desktop background which is especially nice if it is a music video. For that you need VLC. If you do not have it yet, you can install it from e.g. here ( Download VLC Media Player 1.1.2 - FileHippo.com ). And here are the few easy steps:

1. Open VLC and go to Tools > Preferences
2. Click on the icon called Video on the left (3d icon from the top)
3. Change Output (which is set to Default) to say Directx Video Output
4. Click on the Save button (important)
5. Now select the video you like to play -> Media > Open File
6. Right click on the VLC window where the video plays and go to Video > Directx Wallpaper
7. Minimize the VLC window and enjoy your new desktop

If you want to get out of it, right click on the VLC icon in the taskbar and Close VLC. In case you later want to use VLC for "normal" operation, you have to reset the Output to Default and Save it.

A:Have fun playing a music video as desktop background

Ok, let me get to the point, lately whenever I play a music file on my system or watch an online video, all I get is sluggish and choppy sound. I am running Vista Home Premium SP1. My specs are as follow :

AMD Athlon 64X2 TK-53 1.7Ghz
4GB DDR2 RAM
120GB Serial ATA Hard Drive

I've got all of the latest drivers
I ran various virus scans, yet no avail. I am running with all the latest OS updates. Now I am at my wits ends and baffled as to why suddenly it does this.

I also check my hard drive for errors using chkdsk yet it reports nothing bad.
However now that I think of it, I did update my BIOS last week I am running a PHOENIX AMD BIOS with version 3.13 Date : 08/22/2008.

Perhaps this caused some odd behavior ? But as far as I'm aware of, nothing else is wrong with my system.

My only problem is choppy audio while the hard disk drive is active. For example I could be copying a file while listening to music and all I hear is choppy audio. Unfortunately this is a pain in arse while playing games from the hard drive. All I get is choppy/sluggish audio.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and I am getting rather tired at the moment, don't mind my ****ty grammatical errors in this post. All I want to do is get my point across and hopefully get this problem fixed.
Thanks

Ok, I restarted my computer from a fresh boot this morning and when I opened up iTunes to play a song, I clicked the play button. It then proceeds to keep the song on 0:00, no audio no nothing. No attempt to even start the song.

Thinking it was an iTunes error I tried to play something in WMP. It did the same thing....clicked play and the song stays on 0:00. Now I tried to play a video in WMP to see if that worked, and it played extremely slowly and laggy with no audio. VLC media player is doing the same thing.

Some background on my system, it doesn't lag. I have an i7920 and the hard drive the music and audio is stored on is extremely fast. I also tried moving the music to a different HD on my system and it does the same thing. Any help is appreciated. I am going to try a system restore.

A:Music/video not playing (Not an audio problem)

A system restore fixed it. Looks like a windows update was installed. Thats the only thing that could have done it. I haven't installed anything for over a week. If you know what might have done it specifically, let me know.

I've installed the latest driver 4 my gfx card (integrated) , I've scanned with kaspersky, panda, avg, ad-aware and windows defender and I've cleaned up my registry and disk with Ccleaner.

I've got 223 MB RAM, which seems to get eaten up as fast as heck during start-up and afterwards, so I downloaded XP FreeRAM Pro or w/e. It got 4 stars on download.com and IMO it works well. Computer temps are within safe levels (40 -55c max) and it makes no distinct sounds when frozen. When it freezes, the screen stays still and sound turns off. Basic functions like turning on the CAPS lock light are working. I've got my PC tuned up for fast performance, no desktop BG, no window effects (it looks like windows 98) only 4 desktop icons (including the mystring thing). I only got ZoneAlarm firewall, AVG and FreeRam on my taskbar. Still slow, sometimes. I dunno what else to do.

I'm running on an AMD Duron, with VIA motherboard (with S3 Unichrome integrated gfx)
and VIA AC97 audio controller (which i haven't found an update for).

Any suggestions? Thx in advance.

Oh, and it freezes on low-end games. Pharaoh only needs 32 MB RAM and I can't run it w/o freezing it's maddening.

Hello there!
First I must say I'm not really sure if this is an actual hardware issue. I had my (Win 10) computer for approx. 1.5 year and I didn't have this problem until recently. When I play music I get this static noise glitches, in case of video the glitches of audio track and video track are in sync. It can range from barely noticeable glitch to around 1-2 second glitches (the ones after which you'd expect to get bluescreen, I never do).
While I could get use to this, the glitches make my computer almost unusable for VR gaming (Vive). As you can imagine it could be motion sickness inducing experience if the video jitters and skips frames every other second not following actual movements of your body. The issue seems to be more severe for VR than regular gaming. It also takes ages to load VR games for some reason (compared to regular games).

The reason why I think this might be hardware issue, more specifically issue with electricity wiring in my apartment is that the fridge situated in the same room as computer stopped working approx. month after I started to have the issue with my PC.

I'd appreciate any suggestions!

Hello, I've been having problems for quite some time now and upon google search after search there doesn't seem to be an answer. When the audio is on, for videos, games, music, etc. it sometimes "skips" like an old cd player. Its pretty obnoxious, and I'm wondering why exactly this is so. I'm assuming I have an old driver or something, because I upgraded my pc from win 7 to win 8 pro. Thanks for the help and let me know if anyone needs clarification!

A:Jittery sound when playing music/video games (Win 8 Pro)

Audio is always on a shared Interrupt (IRQ) with a higher priority device. Depending on the shared device, it can "interrupt" the audio and cause skipping.

If you have the HP supplied IDT audio driver for Win 7, it is also compatible for Win 8. However, check the Device Manager and see what devices are listed in the Sound section. You should ONLY have the correct IDT sound driver and possibly HDMI audio (if your system has this) and nothing else. If "HD Audio Codec" (the generic Windows installed sound driver) is also listed, or any other sound, except the IDT and possibly HDMI, uninstall those as they can cause conflicts and other audio problems. Restart the PC if you uninstalled anything.

If you only have the correct entries in the sound, RIGHT click on the entry for the IDG and then LEFT click "Uninstall" (do not uninstall the drivers). Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This will fix any potential corruptions between Windows and the sound and sometimes will put the sound on a different shared IRQ and fix or mimimize any interruptions.

Windows will crash to BSOD after about 10-15 minutes of playing a game, listening to music, or watching video. This started happening about a month ago. Up until then everything was fine. I though I found some people with the same problem when I search on Google, but updating their BIOS fixed their problem, it didn't fix mine.

I have updated all of the drivers I could think of and flashed my BIOS to the newest version on the ECS website (I have an ECS KA3 MVP motherboard). This didn't fix the problem. I also made sure I downloaded the Vista driver from Nvidia for my graphics card. I have also run a Memtest and had not errors, and I ran a video card stability test and everything was fine (didn’t even crash). I checked all of the temperatures on the restart and they are all in normal operating range. Here is what the BSOD says everytime.

Hi all, I am new here so sorry if this topic already exists. Anyway, here is my problem. Two days ago, whenever I play a game, watch youtube or watch movies, after about an hour of such an activity, my computer freezes for about a second, screen gets blurred with colors (actually, whatever is on screen at the moment of freezing is what gets murky), sound stops and then the computer restarts. It started after I installed web cam (hp pro web cam), though I am almost certain it is not because of it. I tried to update graphic driver and I have also uninstalled it and then reinstalled the latest ones, didn't help.
My configuration: Pentium 4 3ghz, 2gb ram, ATI 3650 hd, Maxtor x 2 (80 and 160), Chieftec 370w. Thanks in advance

A:Freeze and crash when playing video content

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

We could also use some system information, which you can get easily by running msinfo32.
To do that go to start>run>type msinfo32>enter

When it is finished running go to file>save>name it and upload to us here.

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

Quote:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Quote:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).

Hello,

I randomly have issues of game's crashing into "BlueScreen" errors. Well the screen isn't really a bluescreen but rather the image of the game becomes 'corrupted'. Sometimes you can still hear the audio while the screen is frozen in place and it sometimes auto restarts the computer on it's own. I am either playing World of Warcraft or Starcraft II.

Stop 0x124 is a hardware error

If you are overclocking try resetting your processor to standard settings and see if that helps.

If you continue to get BSOD here are some more things you may want to consider.

This is usually heat related, defective hardware, memory or even processor though it is"possible" that it is driver related (rare).

Quote:
Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try
Synopsis:

A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint.

Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress.
Generic "Stop 0x124" Troubleshooting Strategy:

1) Ensure that none of the hardware components are overclocked. Hardware that is driven beyond its design specifications - by overclocking - can malfunction in unpredictable ways.
2) Ensure that the machine is adequately cooled.
If there is any doubt, open up the side of the PC case (be mindful of any relevant warranty conditions!) and point a mains fan squarely at the motherboard. That will rule out most (lack of) cooling issues.
3) Update all hardware-related drivers: video, sound, RAID (if any), NIC... anything that interacts with a piece of hardware.
It is good practice to run the latest drivers anyway.
4) Update the motherboard BIOS according to the manufacturer's instruct... Read more

Is this because of a bad video card or is it a driver/software issue? I am on a clean install of Windows 8 Pro and have already tried the 314.22 WHQL and 320.00 BETA drivers. Nothing is overclocked.

A:Crash and video hardware error when playing games

Youre using the 314.22 now were you using the 314.07 previously? Ive read that a few people have had the same problem with the Idealpad and the 650 series graphics card. They resorted to the 310.90 drivers and said their problems are gone.. Wanna give that a shot?

Hello, and thanks to anyone that's willing to read this and help me with some issues! I'd like to clarify that I know nothing about hardware. Thus, I beg for patience should I fail to understand some of your answers.

I've started to get BSOD's while gaming, many times a day, about two months ago. They used to happen every 2 hours or so. I upgraded the cooling system and the energy source, which ended up reducing the frequency of the BSOD, but didn't stop them at all. In fact, after this upgrade, they also started to happen randomly, even if the computer was idle. Of course, not as often as while I was playing.

After a week living with this constant party-crushing errors, I decided to make a clean Windows reinstall.
When it was done, I left some files copying from my external drive to the now clean one, and went to sleep. I woke up this morning, and realized the computer restarted itself, and had an "unexpected shutdown" warning message on the screen.

I've uploaded the ZIP that the DM Log Collector created. There's only one dump file right now, given the others were erased with the previous OS.

I'm not sure what to do, or what part of the hardware to blame. My eyes are set on the CPU, but I know so little about this things, that I need some help. Is there anything I can do to narrow down the culprit? Thanks to you in advance for any aid provided.

EDIT: Added information.

Greetings, I'm suffering several BSOD during gaming sessions (error=0x00000124) and I still can't figure out what's the problem, although is almost sure that it's hardware related (there are no overclocks on the system).
The first BSOD happened on the last days of December while playing Kingdoms of Amalur (i was running win8) it was a strange BSOD because I played 12 hours without problems, but after that point my system crashed randomly while playing.

I tried to solve these BSOD by reinstalling the game, by updating drivers and by unistalling some programs like Daemon Tools / MSI Afterburner that it's known they can cause troubles.
I updated BIOS aswell.
I checked temperatures during gameplay but there was nothing strange in them.
I tried to play again and for an hour it worked but then BSOD happened again.

After this I did some hardware diagnostics: MEMTEST outside windows, it did 7 passes in 6 hours with 0 errors. I runned SeaTools for HardDrives without problems and I did also a CHKDSK / Defrag from windows. No problems found and I dediced to do a format and try with my old Windows 7 PRO.

With the release of The Witcher 3 I've had a recurring BSOD problem that started simply on The Witcher and quickly spread to the rest of the game I play. Hi,

So since I got my new graphic card 2 months ago (660gtx) I get some 0x124 BSOD very often.

First some backgrounds:
Last year I bought a 560ti and I had an artifacts (Borderland 2 graphical artefacts 560ti - YouTube) issue with it, I exchanged it one time with no changes and the second one was tried hours without any issue on other computers without malfunctioning (by me and also by gigabyte).
Unable to find why the 560ti gave me artifacts only on this pc I got myself a 660gtx and now I get some 0x124 Bsods . I can't help but those issues have a common cause (but maybe this time the GC have issues).

BSODs are much more frequent while playing, like 2 times tonight on CS:Go but I also had some with only Firefox launched.
I formated my pc last month (and removed dust) but it didn't solve the crashes. With a fresh install and nothing launched except a game (AC3) I got a bsod.

edit: Almost forgot, I did a pass of memtest86+ with nothing, I'll try to do more when I can.
Any help would be great.

A:BSOD When playing or browsing 0x124

So I looked at the "Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try" Thread:

1) I didn't Overclock a thing (well except for the 660gtx being factory OCed like all Nvidia nowadays), Ram is using XMP profile and I didn't touch my i7 default settings.

2) Cooling is ok, I cleaned everything recently and all fans are working.

3) All drivers are up to date.

4) I'm using the latest non-beta bios available (I had issues when trying the beta one)

6) I only did a pass of memtest, I'll try doing more and a checkdisk as soon as possible.

7) I did a windows re-installation, as soon as I started playing I got 0x124 again. It wasn't full vanilla since I did install drivers before trying to play.

edit: got a bsod in less than a minute with Prime95 in blended mode, if it can help.

Around 70 when idling and around 95-105 when playing games. I had cooling pad which did not help at all. Now I am forced to use a huge fan to blow air at the laptop and the temp stays at around 50-60 when idling and 85 when gaming. When PC crashes it does not show any info just shows black screen and sound glitches. Sometimes even BSOD file is not created.

You use torrenting software without an antivirus and antimalware program installed??? Make sure to install security software. I recommend either of these:Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows coupled with Malwarebytes. Do not start the free trial of Malwarebytes. Just use the standalone version, update it, and scan your computer once a week with Malwarebytes and with Microsoft Security Essentials.

Good and Free system security combination.

After installing your security software, update it, and then run full scans today with each program. Report back the results of the scans.

Hello,

I recently built a new system with Win 7 x64 (clean install). When I play my favorite game, Medal of Honor Airborne, I get a BSOD with an 0x124 error within 5-15 minutes. COD WaW seems to play fine. Everything that I have read tells me that 0x124 is a hardware issue that is hard to diagnose, which is why I'm posting here... I need some expert help.

My system is:

Antec TP-750 power supply

Nothing is overclocked. I have two of the video cards, and I had them both in, running SLI. CPU never goes above 46 oC. I have installed the latest motherboard, device, and video drivers from the web.

What I have done so far:
- Video Cards. I have swapped them around, remove one and then the other. Ran with only one in the x16_1 slot; then ran with only one in the x16_2 slot.
- Ran MemTest86+. No reported issues.
- Ran the MSI Kombustor graphics test program for 35 minutes. GPU temp stabilized at 75 oC with 35% GPU fan speed. CPU temp never moved above 44 oC.
- Power supply. The TP-750 has four +12V rails of 40A (according to Antec). Each video card needs two 6-pin PCI-E, and I have 4 of those; I have tried every combination of two for the graphics card.
- Ran SFC /scannow. No issues.

Update your ATI/AMD display driver.
You can get it from the link in our forum, Latest AMD Catalyst Video Driver for Windows 7, or you may go to AMD Graphics Driver and Software and opt for Automatically Detect and Install the appropriate driver for your card.

During installation, you may opt for advanced installation, and install the display driver only, not the Catalyst Control Center.

Check the PSU. It is very important. If you have another one, try with it, and see if the situation is the same or not. As the BSODs are started after the PSU change, and a failing PSU often causes a stop 0x124.

Stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark.
Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark

Report us the heat of the computer after a couple of hours of your normal usage, and after some time of gamiplay. Upload a screenshot of the summery tab of Speccy. The temps you said during OCCT is extreme, It should literally melt the GPU

And, here comes the need for cooling. You have to afford some additional cooling.

Hello everyone. My problems with this BSOD started some weeks ago, and it only happens if im playing games, sometimes I can play for 1-2 days and it won't restart, sometimes it will crash after 2-3 hours, it won't crash if i play 2D games like Brawlhalla for example, but any other 3D game eventually will crash at some point, with showing stripes or black screen, while sound stutters behind and then getting "Hyper Transport Sync Flood Error occured on last boot". My temperatures are 49-50 celsius at load, while in idle 30-35. While i was looking in BlueScreen Viewer, every dump file showed the error was cause by ntskrnl.exe or ntkrnlmp.exe, but the last one that occured today showed ntkrnlmp AND dump_ataport.sys, labeled in red color. I have no idea what is causing this, also it says WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR if i use WhoCrashed. I'm hoping some of more experienced people here will be able to help, cause this is really frustrating :S Thanks in advance!

You are running an Acer Product ID (PID) on an MSI board.
This makes your installation counterfeit.
Troubleshooting a counterfeit installation is useless as it is not known what has been modified to your system.
A counterfeit installation contains heavily modified code which causes the system to behave in unexpected ways.
For this reason, analyzing counterfeit systems is unreliable and most analysts won't try it.

Code:
OS Configuration: Standalone Workstation
OS Build Type: Multiprocessor Free

I checked the temperature while playing, everything is stable, however the crashes are totally random.

Some day i can play 3 hours to "big games" it will be fine, another day the computer can crash while watching a streaming.

Last year my graphic card burned, my issues started from there, however i changed the ram/graphic card and power supply, i'm still getting the crashed.

I am having trouble with system stability playing games. I suspect it's overclock related, but I've fiddled with so many settings and can't get it to stay stable. I was wondering if someone might be able to help by looking through my logs. Before I totally ditch the OC or spend the rest of my life fiddling with voltages, I wanted to confirm it isn't a problem with something else. I have looked through the logs some, but I don't really understand what I'm looking at.

Is there somewhere else I can look for a guide to understanding the info that the SF Diagnostic Tool compiles?

System info:
i5 4690k @ 4.2 GHz
PowerColor AMD Radeon R9 290 PCs+ 4 GB
Gigabyte Z97N-Gaming 5
Kingstone Fury 2x4 GB DDR3-1866
Samsung 840 EVO 500 GB SSD
Seagate Barracuda 3 TB 7200 RPM HDD
Silverstone SST-SX600G PSU (600W, 80+ Gold)

Other things I've done:
Stress test with AIDA-64 - no trouble, can run for hours and hours. Highest CPU temps under stress ~74C
Run Memtest86+ for 10 passes - no errors
Run graphics benchmarking/ stress testing with no problems (Furmark, Unigine Valley/ Heaven)
Monitor temps on everything - CPU never goes above 75C in stress testing, mostly averages mid 60s during stress testing, low 30s at idle, and 50s gaming. GPU stays very cool, never surpassing 70C even in extended stress testing

A:BSOD Playing Games, Error 0x124

The STOP 0x124 error is most often a hardware/compatibility/or low-level driver problem.
The way to start is with these hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics (feel free to skip those that you've already run). From what I saw in my analysis, I'd suspect compatibility and low-level drivers before I suspect a hardware problem - but still run the diagnostics "just in case".

Only 58 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 70 to 90 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Don't worry about the specific number, it's just important that you have checked and installed any updates that were available (and didn't experience any errors).

Due to the number of Live Kernel Events in the WER section of MSINFO32, Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here: Windows Kernel event ID 41 error... Read more

Hi, after several months of having this BSOD and a few weeks of using this computer with less issues after I actually spent time debugging, my problems start coming back to me aGAIn and again and again!!!!!!
Usually this occurs while i game (LoL, Skyrim, Tera) but can happen while i'm not gaming.

I bought a new cpu cooler, used fail safe default settings on my BIOS, cleaned the dust from my computer, updated my drivers, memtest each memory YET I STILL GET BSOD 0x124 daily, sometimes once every hour. On a weekly basis I get a "Stop 0x00000101 A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the allocated time interval." bsod also. Sometimes my computer locks up and freezes and couldn't do anything til i restart it.

Lastest DUMP from today (bsod 0x124)
