Why we don't ask you to run ComboFix from the onset

As stated by the author of ComboFix:

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

We first need to verify if there's any rootkits present and how they could affect our tools. DDS & GMER are preliminary scans. We use their logs to map our strategy for attack.

With these logs we can determine the infections present & decide whether to deploy ComboFix.

We want all our members to perform the steps outlined in the link given below, before posting for assistance. There's a sticky at the top of this forum, and a

Please read every bit of this, as I try to be as detailed as possible. This started about three days ago.First, the fake programs:Windows Antivirus ProAdvanced Virus RemoverSome red X in the system tray that displays "Your computer is infected! Windows has detected spyware infection! It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you." (Don't know if this is part of one of the above fake anti-spyware programs or its own).I've had one or two of them before. (Gotta love the obvious misspellings and grammatical errors).Secondly, the Task Manager is disabled. So I go ahead and try some virus programs. None of them can get a few seconds into the scan without terminating such as MBAM and SpyNoMore (from what SpyNoMore showed while scanning, I saw the file that disabled the task manager and "Advanced Virus Remover", so if I could somehow get that to do a complete scan, I'm pretty sure it could work.)I came across a program that did, however, do a complete scan. It was called A-Squared. When I began to quarantine the files, though, the window where it says there has been a fatal error and Windows must terminate with the countdown from 1:00 occurs. After that, If I boot up my computer again, explorer.exe is gone AND the task manager is disabled. So I had to boot it up in Safe Mode with Command Prompt. I then took Browse function in the "Select program to op... Read more

A:My virus wont let me open my antivirus software, or open certain programs.

Not knowing what OS you're using makes this possibly not applicable, but if it's Windows 10:

An offline scan, if you can trigger it, runs before the OS is loaded and can nuke things that cannot be touched once the OS is loaded and the virus/malware is active.

I had XP Antivirus 2012 on my computer initially, and was able to fix it by following directions. However, then another "Security Protection" virus got onto the computer. I followed all directions from the bleepingcomputer.com tutorial, but it still did not fix the problem. When I start the computer and it loads normally lots and lots of blank windows pop up repeatedly on the desktop. Whenever I try to start any program an error message pops up saying that some part of a file is missing, no matter what program I try to open.

My computer (Windows ME) started acting up after coming off sleep mode. I noticed when I got back to my Publisher file that I got an error message that said, Pbs found error in USER.exe and is shutting down. I lost what I was working within Publisher. Then when I went to Word, I got the same error message for Word. I couldn't open aol either at that point. I tried a scan disk and it froze on the Thorough scan disk. When I tried the standard one, I got scan disk found error in USER.exe and stopped. The best I could do was try to shut down.

I rebooted and the same thing happened. I then pulled out the plug and the system worked after doing a Scan disk. However, once I began working in Publisher again, I got that pbs found error in USER.EXE I had to exit.

I cold booted and I'm on now but I have no idea if or when this is going to happen again. Any ideas?

I hope someone can help me; I have tried everything I know to do to fix this problem. I have windows 7 on a desktop Dell Inspiron computer. I don't know if my problem is with the OS or something else. When I start up the computer, I get an error that says: "Unable to create the temporary folder. Error 183 - Cannot create a file when that file already exists." When I try to open AutoCAD 2012, I get an error message that says: "All of the possible directories for storing temporary files either do not exist or are readonly. Please correct this situation before running AutoCAD again." When I try to open Photoshop, I get an error message that says, "Could not complete your request because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file. Use the 'Properties' command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file." When I start up my computer, I get this error from Dropbox: "Couldn't start Dropbox. This is usually because of a permissions error." All of these errors occurred on the same day; Monday of last week. I am in an online school program and I really need to get this fixed soon so that I can do my assignments! Please, does anyone know how to fix this? I haven't changed any settings that I know of. Thank you!

Now I don't want to drop my firewall because I'm afraid of what the virus might do to my computer if I bring it down.
So, what can I do to fix this?

A:not able to open microsoft and antivirus sites

Do you mean that since you formatted and reinstalled Windows, that you have been running without ANY anti-virus protection.
If you did a format - of the complete drive then on a reinstall you cannot have a virus, so you must have been infected since.

Whenever I try to open any program besides Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, the program will not open. The hour glass icon pops up to show it is loading but it goes away after a few seconds and nothing happens. If I try to install a program, it does the same thing. I have downloaded a couple different antivirus programs, including Spybot S&D and iolo System Shield 3. I also am paying for antivirus through Verizon, my internet service provider, but I have to download the program and install it, which will not work. I don't know what else to do, because I have antivirus programs, but I cannot install or use them.

If someone could help me, that would be great. Thanks for your help and time, and sorry for the long post.

HiI hope someone can help. I got the XP Antivirus 2012 bug last night and FINALLY was able to run malware in safe mode. Looks like I got rid of the bug, but now when I go to my programs, they either won't open or I get a screen asking which program to open them in.While fooling around hitting F8 I also opened in normal mode and last working progress.Anyone know how to fix this now?? Obviously, I am not great at fixing computers!!Thanks in advance for any feedback!!KymeeEdit: Moved topic from Introductions to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

A:Cannot Open Programs After XP Antivirus 2012

Please download FixExe.reg and save it to your Desktop.Double-click on that file to run.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.Choose "Yes" when prompted to add it into the registry.Once that is completed you should be able to run other programs. If you cannot use the Internet or download the file to the infected machine, try downloading from another computer (family member, friend, library, etc) with an Internet connection. Save to a flash (usb, pen, thumb, jump) drive or CD, transfer to the infected machine.IMPORTANT NOTE: Scanning with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware in safe or normal mode will work but removal functions are not as powerful in safe mode. Why? Malwarebytes is designed to be at full power when malware is running so safe mode is not necessary when using it. In fact, Malwarebytes loses some effectiveness for detection & removal when used in safe mode because the program includes a special driver which does not work in safe mode. Further, scanning in safe mode prevents some types of malware from running so it may be missed during the detection process. For optimal removal, normal mode is recommended so it does not limit the abilities of Malwarebytes but sometimes there is no alternative but to do a safe mode scan. If that is the case, after completing a safe mode scan, reboot normally, update the database definitions through the program's interface (preferable method) and try rescanning again.

I believe a virus will not let me open any of my antivirus, saying access is denied or unknown path. I've tried to download more antivirus off the web and that is blocked also as they try to install the antivirus. I've tried in safe mode also. When I shut down the computer it gives me a blue screen saying windows has shut down to prevent further damage. There is a malicious program running called "ensOd.exe *32 that appeared on my processes with no description and around the same time the virus might have come on.
Any help would be appreciated!

My mother's computer is very screwed up, for a lack of better wording. None of the programs will open, nothing will update/install/uninstall, the firewalls and anti-virus are turned off and there's no way to get them back up. I can't get online or get any screecaps because the browsers and other programs are not functioning. I've taken pictures with a camera to help you get a better idea of what's going on, if that's at all helpful. This is the .dll message that appears when trying to change any sort of program. When I attempt to open Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Itunes, MsPaint, System Restore, etc etc, this is what comes up:I click the program I wish to open. The only one that will briefly open is Internet Explorer, but it quickly closes and-- as with the rest of the other programs-- this comes up:Clicking run and save do nothing but bring me back to that screen. Any help would be much obliged, because I'm at a loss with this thing.Thanks.

Before posting I tried to follow instructions and downloaded DDS to the desktop but when I tried to run it, my computer opened a box asking me what program to use to open/run it.... I could not get it to run.

I have Malewarebytes and Bitdefender but when I try to run those the same problem exists.

It seems any .exe program won't work.

I tried to run in safe mode but that triggered only a blue error screen telling me that windows was shut down because it detected a problem and said to run antivirus.

In the control panel I tried to access add/remove software but it won't allow access.

I have Windows XP.

Don't know where to begin and appreciate your assistance.

Hey everyone. First time posting!

Here are my symptoms:

First of all, when I start the computer in normal mode, I get an error. "explorer.exe: The application failed to initialize properly (Oxc0000005)" However, this error does not occur in safemode. I can get back to the explorer in normal mode through the taskmanager: run: explorer.exe.

Now regarding the browser: Google redirects me whenever I try to go to an anti-virus website. Including this site!! (I'm posting from my Dad's computer). This occurs in both IE7 and Firefox.

In addition to this, Whenever I try to start an antivirus program, the process appears in the task manager, but no window will pop up. This occurs with SpybotS&D and Combofix.exe and Malwarebytes. This happens in normal AND safemode.

As you can imagine this is very frustrating. Thank goodness RSIT ran and gave me some logs, or I'd be SOL.

Here are the logs. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop running XP SP2 Pro with BSafe filtering.

Thanks in advance guys.

A:google redirects, cant open/run antivirus programs

I recently did a system restore on my computer to clean it up and hopefully improve speed of operation. It restored back to the old Internet Explorer 6 as it's search engine. For some reason, it will not let me open any microsoft programs (microsoft.com, hotmail, etc.). The internet works fine, but when I go to these websites, they won't access them. I was trying to download an updated internet explorer, but can't access the microsoft webpage. I have tried a trojan remover and have antivirus protection through my internet provider. Any ideas what has happened and what I can do to fix this? Any help is much appreciated.

A:can't open any microsoft programs

"It restored back to the old Internet Explorer 6 as it's search engine"

Welcome to the forum, cumpstona
You should be aware that Internet Explorer is a web browser, not a search engine.

Now, as to your problem. If you definitley have an internet connection and that is not the cause, I remember that same problem happenning to me and here's what fixed it for me:

Open Internet Explorer and click Tools > Internet Options.

Click the Connections tab.
Click the LAN Settings button.
You should now see three tick-boxes.
This top one needs to be ticked: Automatically detect settings
The other two boxes below that need to be unticked.

So correct as necessary, then click 'OK'.
Close Internet Explorer.
Re-open Internet Explorer

My apologies if that doesn't work or the LAN settings are already okay.
As with most Windows problems, they can have a varietary of different causes. The trick is finding the right fix. Please post back if your problem is not solved.

If you start a new thread for this problem, please be sure to mention that you've already checked that the LAN settings are okay, otherwise you will no doubt be asked to check it again and getting nowhere fast.

Hello Everyone,

Hope the experts here can help me in resolving my issue. Thanks everyone in advance.

After copying some files from my friend's USB last night, my task manager, registry editor is disabled, cannot run CCleaner, spybot search & Destroy, Norton Antivirus from my system. Except antivirus websites, almost all websites are accessible. When accessing the antivirus websites, the page just keeps loading and the blank page stays for ever. Tried with different regedit fix tools but of no use.

Can someone please look at this topic and let me know if any fix is available for this.

A:Cannot open taskmanager, regedit, antivirus programs & websites

Hi Guys,

Just an update on my problem.
It might help if anyone faces the same problem.

Uninstalled the antivirus from my system. Installed the 'Microsoft Security Essentials' from Microsoft website. Ran the scan and it was able to find the issues and fixed some on first run. My system hanged on first run when fixing the issues. On the second run, it was able to fix the issues. I tried to install many antivirus softwares before 'Microsoft Security essentials' but the virus didn't allowed me to install them on my system. Now I am able to visit all antivirus websites too. Had to uninstall and re install some applications. Enabled my task manager and registry editor using gpedit.msc from Run command.

Not sure if it fixed all issues in the system but didn't notice any after that.

Really thankful to Microsoft.

Hello,

I would like to enlist your help because I've tried everything on my own and I'm stuck. My computer was infected with the Win7 Antivirus 2012 rogueware. I followed the removal instructions from this site and thought my problem was fixed. Everything seems normal on my "administrator" account and I wasn't aware that anything was amiss until I logged into another account and noticed I couldn't open any programs. I get pop up that says the file has no programs associated with it and to go into Control Panel Default Programs and set it up. I went in and I'm still not really sure how to do this. I tried to uninstall and reinstall programs but that has not worked. I thought deleting those accounts and creating new ones would solve the problem but the issue still persists. After downloading/using a video file converter 2 days ago (which may or may not be the cause), I am now unable to use any Microsoft programs at all. These include (at least) msconfig, help & support, IE8, Outlook. Microsoft Money 2006. It appears that the registry has been corrupted. I tried to use system restore using several different dates, but it failed every time; including in safe mode. When trying to open MS money 2006, error msg (see attached)states already running, but it's not; kill it in task manager; it can't even be opened (catch-22); even uninstalled & re-installed from disk, still the same. It seems something is preventing me from repairing any Microsoft programs. Ran scans on AVG; found nothing. Ran Malwarebytes, found & removed several items (see attached).

I'm stuck. Can you help?

Alright, this isn't this big of a deal in my mind, but my employer is really on me to figure this out. Every now and then when we boot up our computer in our engraving room I can open Microsoft Programs(IE, Word, Outlook), but not any other programs that we normally use on this machine.

I had done some previous research on this, and found people saying it might be a disk error or a corrupt system file. I ran both chkdsk and sfcscan, and even did a repair with the install disk, but the issue still resurfaces.

The computer is a Dell Optiplex 3010 running 64-bit Windows 7.

Let me know if you need any additional information.

Edit: This issue only comes up once or twice every couple days so it might be hard to know right away if the issue is resolved.
