Issue with ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock for P1

Q: Issue with ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock for P1

Hi, I'm using the new ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock which came out with the P52 with my P1. So far it almost works fine when you boot up, but whenever I disconnect the machine from it after sending it to sleep or hibernation (like overnight) and plug it in the other day the mouse and keyboard are not detected.I need to reboot the laptop to use them again with the dock. Thats really annoying. I thought it might be a driver issue but after updating to the newsest drivers from lenovo the problem persists. Has anybody a solution for that? Of course all other updates from Lenovo side are in place..and I'm still using windows 10 1803.the mouse is a razer deathadder and the keyboard a Filco majestouch 2.Is that the typical glitch of a new product we always have to face as beta testers :-) Merci A

Hello everyone, I recently bought a Thinkpad X1 Extreme and I am now locking for a suitable Thunderbolt 3 dock. Although I've read a lot of posts about various docks I am still a little consfused about which one to choose. It seems like the following ones would all work with the X1 Extreme:1. Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W:https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...2. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (170W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...3. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (230W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/top-tech/Thunderbolt-WS-230W-dock-US/p/40AN023... Please correct me if I am wrong but to me it seems as if the only difference between these docks is that the workstation ones come with two AC adapters each and a special Thunderbolt/Power cable to avoid using two different cables. Or are there any other technical differences? So if I am okay with a two cable solution couldn't I just use the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W and connect it via Thunderbolt while at the same time use my 135W AC adapter to charge the laptop? Thanks a lot in advance.

Dear community, I am running a Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock with my P72 and I am having a hard time to get some of my realtime USB devices to run properly: (1) 1080p Webcams: I tested 2 devices (Logitech C930e and Microsoft LifeCam Studio) and both provide an unstable video stream, which is regularly interrupted by distortions. A lower 720p stream with another device (Logitech C270) works fine, though. (2) Oculus Rift Headset and Oculus Sensor: Does not run at all or with bad tracking performance. Those devices require a stable USB 3.0 connection to function properly. All of those devices run perfectly when connected to my Thinkpad P72 diretly. So chances are, that the Dock is causing the problems, I have the Dock's latest drivers (v10011) and firmware (04-0E-83_Rev_0083) installed. Does the Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock actually support fast USB connections (such as high definition Webcams)? Or is it rather likely that my Dock and/or the Thunderbolt cable are damaged?  I have been working on this issue for many hours now. So any advice is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Robert

I received the ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock back in October. In fact, I got two: one for the home office and one for the work office. It came in a small but heavy package (yes, it has two power adapters inside: a 65W and a 230W one). As mobile workstations have a power requirement that is more than 100W - P1/X1X requires 135W, the P52 170W and the P72 230W - a single TB3 cable cannot carry power to the notebook. Hence the special double cable that comes with the dock. I know I read a lot of arguments on which is better - the mechanical dock or the cable dock.    I have been using both docks daily since I got them, and I gathered my thoughts into two articles.   The review has my opinion about the dock and how it functions. You will also find more pictures about the dock and cable in this article. The troubleshooting article has some issues I bumped into and some solutions for them. One issue in particular mechanical dock fans will love :-) The cable can dislodge easily, and while the dock functions because there is a Thunderbolt 3 connection, the power connection gets terminated and the notebook will use battery power. Read more about in my troubleshooting article.

Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation DockEU/INA/VIE/ROKModel name: 40AN0230EULink (US version) I didn't find any decent pictures and or specs about this dock for the P series workstations, so here you are some pictures. It has a special combined cable, that allows to attach the powercable and the Thunderbolt cable in one. On the P1, P52, and P72, the sockets for the power adapter and the Thunderbolt are arranged the same way that the cable can plug in exactly. This is a simple and clever solution I think. The dock arrives with:230 W power adapter (which is for the P72 necessary, the P52 and P1 can use smaller ones), and I think is a simple pass-through from the dock to the laptop.65W power adapter - which is for powering the dock itself Downsides:The dock's cable is only 60 cm long, so there is not enough length to hide the dock (I think this is related to display data on Thunderbolt - can someone confirm?)And that the cable can be plugged in in one direction, so it will determine how the laptop and dock can be positioned relative to each otherConnections:USB: 5Thunderbolt: 2Audio: 1Network: 1Lock: 1List price is 392? in Belgium.

HelloI've seen postings on Solidworks forum that there can be a conflikt between the IntelŪ HD Graphics 630 and the Quadro P2000 when running on extern monitor: https://forum.solidworks.com/thread/233873 "I have a Lenovo ThinkPad P1 with an Intel Xeon E-2176M and an NVIDIA Quadro P2000. The integrated graphics for the Xeon processor are Intel UHD P630, which does not appear to have official support from Solidworks. When connected to a second monitor, Solidworks crashes anytime I try to open or start a part because the second monitor uses the integrated graphics. The only work-around I have is to disable the Intel graphics drivers, but this is annoying and I feel like I shouldn't have to do this. The NVIDIA control panel setting is already telling Solidworks to use the P2000 card, but this doesn't seem to matter. All my drivers are up to date with what has been validated by Lenovo. Solidworks just doesn't like UHD P630. Does anyone know if support for UHD P630 is in the works?" Is it likely to be a problem on a Thinkpad P1 gen2 with an Quadro T2000 and IntelŪ HD Graphics 630 when running Solidworks on ekstern monitor on Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock - EU/INA/VIE/ROK? I ask becuse this will be a dealbraker for me if I buy the Thinkpad P1, as I normally always use external monitor at home when docked!

When turning on the Thunderbolt 3 workstation dock using a P52 the USB and audio ports do not work. Means that a USB connected keyboard or mouse is not usable. I can resolve the issue by unplug&plug-in the 65W power supply cable. Why are keyboard/mouse/headphones not instantly working when switching on the dock? Is there a special setting necessary? Thx!

I used the Lenovo System Update (v5.07.0074) and was prompted to download and install (was listed as Critical Update) the Firmware to my Dock.  As always, I closed all applications and sat as the Firmware downloaded. I got the expected prompt to ensure I was plugged in. I then watched as the upgraded prompted me to install. Installation completed and everything appeared to be fine.  I powered down the thinkpad and disconnected. Worked from the living room, then went back to the dock. Connected, and noticed that before I connected the White light on the power button was illuminated. Shrugged, and pushed the power button. Nothing. I un-plugged the Dock, got a cup of coffee, returned and plugged it back in. Nothing. I then noticed that none of the pass-through power was working on the dock.  So, I unplugged it again.  Unplugged everything connected to it, and held the power button down for 15 seconds in an effort. All of this at the recommendation of Lenovo Support. Who, by the way, was very nice and well spoken. Nothing we did worked. I happened to have another Thunderbolt 3 cable in my bag, and no change. I powered up my new X1 Yoga, and connected the cable. No power. This wasn't passing power at all. I confirmed the Intel Thunderbolt app was running, and confirmed that Windows was not even detecting the Dock.  Lenovo is sending me a replacement. Hello All.  I am new here. My company replaced my W540 (Windows 7 OS) Thinkpad with a P52 (Windows 10 OS) Thinkpad.  I have an external DisplayPort monitor and extend the desktop to it.  I have a USB printer.  I use both wired Ethernet, and wifi.  I have a wireless Logitech mouse.  I also have a set of Altec speakers.  The P52 no longer uses the sit on type of Dock, so I bought a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (230W).  I set everything up, with the external monitor connected to the Thunderbolt 3, along with the Ethernet, printer, speakers, and Logitech Unifying transceiver.  With everything connected, the P52 connected to the monitor just fine, and I extended the Desktop to it.  The P52 could not see the printer, the Ethernet, or the Logitech Unifying transceiver.  If I move these items to direct connection on the P52, they are all found right away. Today, I downloaded the latest software and drivers for the Thunderbolt 3, and then installed them.  I have the same results for the four peripherals.  Am I missing something?  My Windows 10 OS is the Enterprise Edition, version 1803.  The Dock lets me connect the monitor and the power with one cable, but I still need to plug in and out the other four items if I use them. Help Please... Thanks,Bunsen1

My current one was messing up as well until I flashed both the X1E thunderbolt controller and the dock as well, I also read on another forum about disabling some power setting in the BIOS but I cant remember what setting it was. However, now when I launch a full screen game, such as World of Warcraft, the dock will disconnect and reconnect randomly. I am about to toss this $400 dollar paperweight out the window! Does the Thinkpad P51s support the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? I have the Thinkpad P51s with stock Windows 10 Pro and updated to latest drivers and Windows version and installed the latest Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock drivers. Attaching the Thunderbolt 3 Dock to the P51s as described in documentation, it charges the notebook, however, noting attached to the dock is recognized. I've tested with attaching USB flash drives, headphones, Ethernet, HDMI, and DP, but nothing is recognized nor are any warnings/errors displayed in Windows. While the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is listed as being compatible with the P51s and T570, the notebook order page does not list the Thunderbolt 3 Dock in any of the accessories lists. Lenovo Sales also confirmed that the Thunderbolt 3 Dock is fully compatible with the P51s.  However, I needed to purchase the Thunderbolt 3 Dock separately from the notebook order. What's going on? Has anybody successfully used the P51s or the T570 with the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Or is this something I need to wait for full support via a future BIOS/driver update? Or perhaps my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is defective? Thanks,Boris

Hi guys, This morning System Update ran and installed a bunch of the newest March 2019 updates. The big one was the Intel Management Engine. After rebooting, when my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is plugged into my Lenovo P52 it freezes on the POST screen with the Lenovo logo. If i unplug the dock it boots fine, plug the dock in after the OS is booted, things work fine. Its just during the POST during secure boot. I tried reflashing the Thunderbolt firmware to the 11/2018 to no avail, reflashed the dock with version 3.x of the firmware (latest) no difference, downgraded the firmware on the dock, changed the boot support methods for thunderbolt, so on and so forth.  Its strange it doesn't get past the logo screen it just sits. Is there another version of the Thunderbolt firmware i should be using besides the November 2018? I really would not like to peel back all the different updates that it updatedAnybody got any ideas? Is there a way to find what the cause is? Honestly i can unplug the dock when i reboot and plug it back in within a second after the POST screen and things work as normal. Its just a pain.

We have standardized our deployments to ThinkPad X1 Yogas, and in many case including this one, they are the second generation model. Because of the performance, we use the Thunderbolt 3 Dock, purchased directly through Lenovo. This setup is not unfamilar to use as we have deployed over 40 workstations in the same configuration. This morning, our team received a call stating that an end-users monitors weren't working. Upon reviewing, we found that the dock wasn't being recognized by the laptop, although the connection was there because it was charging the laptop. We went through the normal "rinse and repeat" steps of ensuring that the thunderbolt cable was connected to the correct ports on both the dock and the laptop, removing the connection, removing the power, rebooting the computer, reintroducing the dock, etc., but to no avail. We remove the dock from known devices hoping that it would spark it to recognize a new device, but it didn't. We removed the Thunderbolt Software completely, reinstalling it, and then reconnecting the device, and still, nothing. Our devices are set to automatically install critical and security updates both through Lenovo Vantage and Windows Updates, but, the only change made between the time it was working and the time it stopped working wasn't relative to the dock. To be sure, we rolled back the updates, then rolled back farther, but it still didn't resolve the issue. We then followed through with installing all Windows and Lenovo updates: ... Read more

We purchased a new X1 Carbon 6th Gen with the new Thunderbolt 3 Dock Win 10 1803 and have had all kinds of problems. Bad enough to consider other brand alternatives. All Lenovo drivers are current, we updated the firmware and drivers for the dock. With that we still have the following problems and dont know how to resolve them1. The network connectivity from the dock to laptop with USB-C loses connectivity on occasion. Also when the user shuts off the laptop, comes back and turns the laptop on, no network connectivity is re-established. The only way to fix this is to unplug the USB-C cable and plug it back in. Sometimes that will lock up windows and we have to do a hard shut down and start of the laptop. 2. Running the display out from the dock is not always reliable. The monitor will turn off randomly. To bypass this issue we have to just plug the monitor directly into the laptop. 4. Occasional random bluescreens with a stop  code DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION. This error is related to bad drivers. Are we missing something. Is there anything we have to set in the BIOS to resolve these problems? I've been reading up on this dock and a lot of people are having problems with this dock and carbon 6th gen laptops

In the last month I purchased a Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2G and the Thuderbolt USB C dock. Since the USB C cable that comes with the dock is too short to allow the dock on the right and laptop on the left (in laptop mode), I put the notebook in tent mode and all works fine---except... Everytime I power up from hibernate it starts beeping about once a second and does not stop. I have to disconnect from the dock, flip it to laptop mode (this is where the beeping stops), return it to tent mode, and then plug the dock back in. It seems that Lenovo, like everybody else, is rushing things to market with plans to fix bugs later (maybe). Any thoughts I how to stop the beeping?  The first time it happened I closed all the apps to reboot and it still was beeping. Thanks.

I recently received a ThinkPad T480s for my work PC and a Thunderbolt 3 Dock. I'm loving the laptop, but the dock is having some troubles. I'm worried either the dock is bad or worse, the laptop's Thunderbolt hardware is bad. The dock will cut out and appear to crash on certain occasions. I'm still trying to experiment with the triggers. I'm not 100% sure, but it appears that while I'm using it everything works fine - so long as I keep the laptop awake. It's when the ThinkPad goes to sleep or I leave my desk for a long enough time that the screens will have appeared to drop out. Or after the laptop has gone to sleep and I wake it up, then a few minutes later the dock crashes. For the most part the issue resolves itself once the dock power cycles and the displays come back up, but the last time this happened the screen was frozen and I had to do a hard shutdown of the laptop by holding the power button. My dock is pretty heavily loaded. It has the following peripherals attached: 2 DVI monitors with DVI to DisplayPort converterr connected to the dock1 VGA monitorEthernet connectionKeyboard USBMouse USBAudio OutAll monitors plus the docking powersupply are connected to the same powerstrip. The closest post resembling my issue is this one: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Displays-Options-and-Accessories/Thunderbolt-3-Dock-crashes-and-emits-c... But it doesn't appear to have been fully solved. I've updated the ThinkPad's Thunderbolt drivers and firm...
