Sounds play out of nowhere

Q: Sounds play out of nowhere

Over the past couple of days, my kids have been saying that they hear sounds starting to play out of nowhere. I've checked active programs and processes, the only thing that is suspect is an item in start-up: c:\progamfiles\commonfiles\alg.exe ... I've ran MalwareBytes, removed the items it suggested, uninstalled the torrent and p2p program the kids were using, and performed the log scans as outlined. Here they are. Any help would be appreciated...

Preferred Solution: Sounds play out of nowhere

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Sounds play out of nowhere

Please do the following:

Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt for further review.

Ok so I have a simple, but annoying problem. I have no Windows Sound Events like the login sound, the logout sound, and when the battery is low. Every other sound like playing music and running YouTube videos work fine. Even when I turn on my laptop I hear the whole computer startup sound, but I don't hear the login one. I don't understand the problem. I went into personilazation and went to Windows Sounds, but when I select one and click "Play" I don't hear anything. I tried the other Sound Themes and they don't work either. I ran the Fix It program for Audio, and it didn't find anything wrong.

A:No Windows Sounds, but regular sounds play fine

Hello! I have the same problem you have (or had?) with Windows 7 64bit. Everything is working good, but no system sound at all! No sound when I login..no sounds when i insert or remove USB devices..and so on! But sound is ok in youtube or in videogames...how did you fix that? If you fixed it?

I've got the RC beta of W7 installed on the 5th.
My motherboard is an Asus P5Q-E with Soundmaxx audio.
I plug my headphones into the front audio jack and it is NOT seen by W7.
I move the plug to the rear jack and it is not recognized.
Go to Sound control panel and the headphones are listed as the default device but it is greyed out and can't be used.
When I look at the volume settings for the system I see the green bars moving. There is sound in there somewhere but I can't access it.
The headphones work.
The front jack works.
According to W7 my drivers are OK.
I do not have enough knowledge to know where to look next.
Hope somebody can help me fix this.

A:W7 does not play any sounds. Need help.

Hello Halfbaked,

First of all, have you the latest Vista driver for your chipset ? You can find it here : http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mis...10_Vista_n.rar

Then I heard of that problem, it seems that your headphones are the default device whereas you should have the speakers as a default, try to install the driver i linked in order to see if it can solve that problem.

Good luck !

Hey lynn,

Did the sound work before?

When you went to sounds and it was working do you mean here?

If yes then try clicking configure and follow the Wizard to setup your speakers

Next click on properties
and then on levels
Then make sure that the sound is turned up

Okay, so this problem has been bugging me for a couple of weeks now. My computer will not play any sounds through the speakers unless it is through a media player and the file is on my computer. I have a Realtek AC97 sound driver. I know that my speakers are fine because my Xbox 360 is hooked up to them and they play perfectly.

I have even done an XP repair install, this has not helped either. Sometimes, when a sound needs to be played, the speakers make a bumping crack (if you know what I mean ). When I play a game on my computer, they just make a constant crackle. It is as if they want to play an instrument but don't have a music book.

I tried downloading that codec pack (forgot the name, but it's popular). I have tried fully uninstalling all my sound drivers and stuff and then reinstalling from manufacturer's website. I have tried all the suggestions out there about editing the registry and stuff, they haven't done anything either.

I did get it back from the pc shop recently because they replaced the hard drive with a new 500gb one and the sound did not work from the moment I turned it on. I would like to avoid having to spend more money there and instead see if this is something I can fix with a mouse and keyboard?

Thanks for reading and I hope you can help.

Hi, I've recently had a lot of spyware on my computer that I've been trying to get rid of. I've got a big part of it removed, but after my efforts my speakers have something weird going on. I can play music from my iTunes fine, but any sound I try to play from my browser won't play. I don't get any errors, I just don't hear anything.

The only audio device I have in my device manager is "Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device", which makes little sense to me. I'm not sure if that's referring to my speakers or not. When I go to Sounds and Audio Devices in the control panel though, it tells me there are no audio devices connected.

So my questions are: Is this "Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device" referring to my speakers? And if not, what can I do to get my computer to detect the speakers? Obviously they're hooked up right and functional, so what else could the problem be?

My operating system is XP. Hopefully I gave you guys enough information. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, from my username you can tell I am experienced with Macs. However, I am using a Windows computer for a school project and I am having trouble with Powerpoint.

I'm using several sound files for my presentation. Most of them are midi files from Clip Art. Everything was working fine, and all the sounds were playing, so I saved the presentation and then I added another file, in wav format.

This file wouldn't play in previews or in the slideshow, so I deleted it and tried again. Still didn't work. I took it out again, and tested the presentation without it. None of the other sounds would play.

How can I get the sounds to play, and what do you think caused this? I didn't move any files or anything. This is so confusing!

Any help would be appreciated.

I've been having this really strange problem lately. Sometimes when I plug in or in rare cases when I unplug my headphones random sounds starts playing. Advertising, sounds from movies, music, anything.

It seems to start playing, not at the beginning of the "sounds", and it does not play until the end of them. Also, these sounds are NOT on my computer anywhere. They are completely unrecognized by me. When they play, a strange "program" appears in the sound mixer. See attached screenshot.

Anyone else having this problem?

When I change a few system event sounds, such as Logon and Logoff soundswith two particular files, NOT default Windows sounds, and "test" they won't play, but if I set them back to default or any other .wav file in the drop-down list, those all work. I might note, that I made this change and did have the sounds working, but now, they won't work at all. I have tried to move the file and redirect the "system" to the new location and nothing. Some system event sounds won't play in Vista on my Dell Inspiron 1525. It was working until about a week or two ago and I have no idea what happened. I've searched here and elsewhere, chatted with Dell tech support and tried absolutely everything I can think of.

The problem is some even sounds work, like Startup, Shutdown, mail notification and some don't like Asterisk, Default Sound, Close Program. When I use the Test button in the sound scheme scheme area the sound will play, but then the sound won't play when the event happens in Windows.

Things I've tried:
-updated sound driver (confirmed with Dell support)
-upgraded to SP2
-checked items in services.msc to make sure Themes support and other sounds items are running
-used default sound theme and overall theme
-checked Mixer to make sure nothing is muted (even though some sounds are playing)
-other things I can't even remember

After upgrading to SP2 I apparently don't have restore points going back far enough.

Anything I can try? This is driving me nuts even though it's not anything critical. Thanks.

Hey all. I'm wondering why windows 7 doesn't allow you to play sounds thru 2 different jacks or ports. As in, my case has USB, front headphones jack, and rear speakers jack.

But I can only at one time use one of the 3. I can only have sounds routed thru my speakers. Or thru my headphone jack, or my USB headphones. I can't have 2 running.

Basically sometimes I want game sounds thru speakers and vent thru headphones. Or much simpler, I want 2 headphones running so my girlfriend and I can watch hulu together.

My audio drivers are all up to date. It's a Windows 7 option/setting or lack there of.

How do I get it to play sound thru both the front and rear speaker jacks simultaneously?

What happens is that whenever I play World of Warcraft and play music, it starts to crackle (The sound that is) and kinda goes into slow motion mode. IT happens to wow sound also, but not when I use my headphones..

Anyone has any idea what can be the cause and how to fix it?

A:My sounds crackles when I play games.

There are many posts on this and other forums about this problem. Unfortunately, there is no "one fix" for the problem.

Several general items that have been known to cause that is (1) a Wi-Fi adapter (if you have one disable it and see if that helps), video and sound drivers (update to the latest and in this case NVIDIA), cell and wireless phones close to the PC, etc.

You can look over the many posts here, but most are not dealing with HDMI audio, they are dealing with regular PC audio and speakers or headsets.

Good morning all.

I have MSoutlook 2010 on my Vaio which I access remotely via RealVNC in another part of the house which works absolutely fine. However what I would like is when that windows 7 machine plays a sound notifying that new mail has just come in, I would like that sound, or all sounds from that laptop, to actually be played into or on my second (main) windows 7 pc, which is on another floor in the house, through it's own soundcard.

So to summarise, how can you stream all sound from one pc to another. I am willing to consider any ideas.

I was not sure whether(?) to place my request here, or under the Sound issues forum. Apologies if I've submitted this in the wrong place.

Thank you for looking.

I know this is kind of a sore thumb in a forum full of computer related problems, but when I thought who could help me with this kind of stuff, I could only think of you guys.

I recently found a Amplifier on the side of the road, it hadn't rain recently, and it had no scratches, scuffs or anything like that. It even had its power cord still bunched up with a easy-tie. So it must of been well respected when it was being used.
I brought it home and plugged it in. The display lit up and all the buttons on the front worked. When I plugged in a stereo and a speaker, nothing played even though it was set up right. The speaker and radio worked on a second, not so healthy amp, so it must be the amp's problem. I may have narrowed it down when I turned the amp itself onto radio, and it started to pick up radio waves and told me if I had the right frequency and how strong the channel was, so I am assuming its a output problem. When the case was opened up, the only fuse I could find wasn't blown, from what I could tell. (It did have a bulge, like a bit of sodder, but the wire didn't shake when the machine was moved.

The problem started occurring a couple of days ago. Originally I could restart my computer and I would be fine for a while, but eventually that stopped working. I have had this computer for at least 6 months and have not had any problems with it. Also I ran a quick scan with Windows Defender and it didn't find anything out of the ordinary.

Thank you for your time. Here's an elephant.

I'm having the same problem. I'm running a gtx 680 4gb with the latest drivers on an asus rampage iv extreme using the hdmi out of the video card to my receiver. It shows in windows that it is connected to my integra dtc-9.8 and I get a picture and multichannel sound. When I go to play a game I get multichannel sound but there is constant crackling which make it unlistenable. I'm convinced this is an NVIDIA issue and it shouldn't have anything to do with anything else hooked up to the computer (all I have is the video card and a usb keyboard and mouse.) It seems like the port isn't powerful enough to push a strong enough signal for the 5.1 audio and the video, at least that's what it seems like. If anyone has figured out this issue please please reply. thanks

A:My sounds crackles when I play games

Sound crackling and popping is a frequent problem posted here and in other forums.

Have you checked the regular PC sound system (not the HDMI/Video sound) to see if you get the noise there?

There is no "one fix" for the problem. Some of it is caused by drivers and some by other things such as wi-fi. First suggestion is to update the Video card drivers (as you apparently have an NVIDIA video card get the latest from NVIDIA). If you have a wi-fi adapter, disable that.

Some of my Windows sound scheme sounds do not play. In the sound scheme settings, under Program Events ,regardless of sound scheme selected, the Sound events for Windows DO NOT play, but sound events for Windows Explorer, and every single other application, DO play. When I click Test, the sound always plays, but in practice, never does. This only happens with the sound events under the Windows category? everything else plays fine.

I?ve tried changing the sounds around (using different sound files), and it?s not the sound files themselves, my sound drivers, or anything like that. I?ve tried checking the registry, and that seems to be set up correctly. I?ve tried creating a new user profile, and it has the same problem.

If you redirect me to a thread about similar problems, chances are, I?ve already read it if it?s easily found by a Google search. Not everyone has had the same exact problem anyway (where it plays when I click Test and only the Windows events are affected). Please don?t tell me to re-format, re-install, or repair Windows. :-)

A:Windows Event Sounds Do Not Play

Update… I noticed something strange… the restore up, restore down, minimize, and maximize sounds still don’t play in Windows or any Windows program, except for Excel. I have Excel 2007. For some reason, Excel is allowing these sounds to play.

Hope someone is good with Flash files. I only want this movie I made and put on my index page to play the sound once.

So, if a visitor clicks on "products" and then goes back to the home page...I do not want the movie to play the sounds again.

Any clue? Thanks to all.

Hi, I bought my XBOX two days ago, and yesterday I got an HDTV for it, a 47' RCA. I have properly plugged in all of the correct jacks, the green, blue. and red video plugs, and the red and white audio plugs, into the same video mode of course CMP1. It will not play any sounds but I know it's not my xbox cable because first of all, I just bought it, and second of all I used it on my smaller TV and the sounds plays perfectly, only problem with the smaller one is I can't read anything because the font is too small. You should probably know that I got it second hand off of a friend and he used his cable TV on it and it played the audio, I don't know if something happened after that but he didn't move it around too much. I also bought an HDMI cable (which supports sound AND video) and tried that too, same problem, no sound, perfect picture quality. I would appreciate any feedback or help. I may have to take it in to get it fixed but I would like to try as much as I can before I do, as I get very irritated about spending money for something I could've fixed myself, as do we all.

Things I've tried:
Gone through the menu messed around with audio menu
Plugged in computer speakers into the head phone jack
Plugged headphones into the headphone jack
Throwing it against the wall
I've gone through the XBOX audio settings
Tried CMP1 and 2
Tried HDMI
Tried plugging it into extra audio ports

Edit: I also realized that this may not be the correct thr... Read more

A:Play some sounds through speakers and some through headphones

Not that I know of. Its either one or the other. You can have options on some sound devices for which headphone/speaker jacks are or aren't active but you can only have one default audio playback device at a time and thus everything gets routed through that device.

So, basically, the movie should just play sounds only when you first come to the website.

A:Want Flash file to play sounds only ONCE

OK. This isn't the "coolest" solution, but here is what I did to get the sound to only play once.

I just made an index-2 file and attached a .swf with no sound to that file. Then I just linked all the pages to index-2 instead of index.

No more sound everytime you press home. Only when you first enter the page.

Hi friends
I had Vista on my lenovo G530 laptop and it used to make short sounds when the laptop lid opened or closed upon entering/exit to/from sleep mode by closing/openning the lid now I have upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate there is no any sound...How can I get this back??

-I dont think its a preinstallled program
-I tend to think it was a Vista sound scheme?

A:laptop does play sounds on lid open/close

I think there's some features if you go to your battery settings, there should be some kind of table with possibilities with Windows Sounds and stuff like that.
Search for battery, and check it out. I don't remember it completely.

Whenever my pc plays some sound its unclear as i hear lots of small pops over the sound. At first i thought it was my specker system, but i changed it and the sounds still the same, i tried headphones as well, they made no difference either, so i thought it was my music file that was not clear, then i tried 219 different music tracks, it made no difference i still heard the pops. I put the same tracks onto my mp3 player and it plays them very clearly. Even when i listen to a trailer or something with sound on the internet i still hear the pops, that means its my pc thats causing all this. Can anyone help me please? The pop sound, sounds like popcorn being made in a microwave, pops keeping playing over all types of sound. Please can someone tell me how to stop this from happening?

desktop, laptop??

on my desktop i would get much the same symptom because i had a internal pci wireless card in the desktop. Now i hook my desktop up to my surround sound system, so the problem came in when the wireless card antenna was near the plug in from the stereo to the sound card. Since the two card sat next to each other in their respective pci slots on the MB, when the wireless card would be transferring any data of any type(which is virtually all the time if connected to the router and internet), a clicking would ensue of the speakers within my surround sound, god forbid streaming music or videos, i resolved this by moving the cards to opposite ends of the motherboard and moving the pc farther off the wall and giving the backside of the tower more breathing room,. I figured this was due to the antenna somewhat interferring with the small electrical fields given off my the sound card connection wire. A college physics class tells you than any wire with current running through it has an electromagnetic field, and thus can be disturbed if the wireless card is nearby broadcasting data through a larger stornger form of electric fields. Eventually i broke down and just moved my router and hardwired my pc to the router, solving the annoyance entirely. This may be your problem, maybe not, cant really tell with the info you gave but it solved my problem and in the off chance you are using a similar setup or something, hopefully this may help you......

Hi there,

I want to make use of two application sounds running at once, for example, Flight Simulator 2004 and Ultimate Traffic, and every time I minimize Ultimate Traffic to go back into Flight Simulator, the Ultimate Traffic sound seems to mute (or give priority to Flight Simulator and stop Ultimate Traffic sound, hopefully you know what I'm trying to say).

I've been looking around the Control Panel and tweaked a few things, but to no avail. It seems like it should have such a simple solution, yet it seems persistant in not working.

This is the only issue I've had with Windows 7, apart from that I love it.

A:Making Application Sounds Play At Same Time

I'm sure you have a lot more experience than me so this is just some random thoughts that might jog an idea or two. Seems like what you're trying to do is similar to having background music playing while someone is doing a talkover. That usually means recording each "sound" to a separate track, then sync-ing the two sounds so they overlap, and finally recording both tracks into one final version.

A free tool called Audacity gives you that control. And this tutorial goes into a bit more detail. Sorry if this isn't what you had in mind.

Okay so I've read the other threads and figure that...well...I figured nothing.

Audio sounds great. It's from my gigabyte motherboard, not from an expansion card. I have a jumper cable running from my mobo to my video card for the audio signal. When there is no audio playing on my computer, there is a sort of static buzz that has what seems like a specific rate to it... "blip blip____blip blip___blip blip"..... sort of like that

All inputs/recording settings have been disabled.

The only fix I have is to basically open an app (winamp) and have it play audio at 0% volume. It's kind of stupid and would prefer to not have to do this. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

A:Buzzing when no sounds play over HDMI connection

I have a jumper cable running from my mobo to my video card for the audio signal.Click to expand...

That's the norm for HDMI. HUMMMMMM or other noise when no sound is being produced intentionally is usually a grounding or cable shielding problem.

To be honest, my laptop HDMI is iffy; by that I mean, a connection to the HDTV at home and at one auditorium is just fine, but at another location, I get hum all the time both with and without sound originating from the laptop - - using the same hdmi cable.

The laptop has a plastic case and of course can not be shielded and therefore subject to 'environmental' interference'

In normal audio circuits, a/c hum indicates poor or no shielding (ie grounding) OR
the leads on the audio cable are reverse - - the ground on the cable is wired (by mistake) to the audio hot lead (ie the input).

On your PC, make sure you have a grounded A/C power cord and the wall plate has an active ground connection.

yesterady they just played and cut out half way, now the startup and shutdown down sounds wont play at all, i restored the bios, and the drivers to the realtek ac97 sound card to factory default, yet even doing that, the startup and shutdown sounds refuse to play anymore...... do radeon 9600xt graphics cards cause these startup and shutdown sounds to not work correctly? or is it something else? is there anyway to fix this problem so that i can not only play these sounds again, but also play them to thier full duration, and not just cut out half way? also, every other sound works, just not the shutdown and startup sounds

i have direct x 9.0c and am not sure if the drivers for that are conflicting with it, sandra says no, but it also says that the drivers for my ac97 audio card are obsolete, yet when i go to update them, it can find no updates.... even installing the generic ac97 audio drivers that were released a month ago do not solve the problem, anyone who can offer help so my startup and shutdown sounds not only work, but play the whole file again would be greatly appreciated!
