XPS 15 9550, Thunderbolt NVM firmware issue with Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter

Q: XPS 15 9550, Thunderbolt NVM firmware issue with Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter

Because I didn't liked USB 3.0 ethernet chipsets and USB-based ethernet cannot bear some network-intensive tasks, I wanted to use PCIe-based Thunderbolt ethernet controller on my XPS 15 9550. As there is no Thunderbolt 3 "PCIe" ethernet adapter (except docks), I chose to buy Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter and Thunderbolt 2-based ethernet adapter.
I plugged it into the XPS 15 9550 (tested with BIOS 1.1.19, 1.2.14, 1.2.16 and latest Thunderbolt firmware with NVM version 16), and the PCIe device did not pop up. Instead, only USB billboard device is appearing saying that "Alternate Mode configuration not attempted". Both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.10 failed to detect the device. I moved this configuration to MSI GS63 laptop, and it detected ethernet controller successfully (that laptop utilizing NVM firmware version 18).
It seems that other vendors are affected with lower NVM firmware version involving setup with Thunderbolt adapter: see the case of Lenovo too. Do you have planned Thunderbolt NVM firmware update for XPS 15 9550? Looks like XPS 13 9360 is using newer Thunderbolt NVM firmware version, though.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi,
I myself own an XPS 15 9550 and noticed that I was not getting the full Thunderbolt 3 speedover it's Thunderbolt 3 port. I expected speeds around 2700MB/s, because of the overhead withthe theoretical gross speed of 3870MB/s, but I only ever got 1400MB/s out of it.
I did some digging and found out that none of the XPS notebooks with Thunderbolt 3 are evenable to achieve the full TB3 speeds, because they are only connected with two PCI Express lanes (x2.3).You can read more about this on the following links:Dell Subreddit PostChipset Digging on Forum

Thunderbolt 3 and the promised speeds were the MAIN REASON I even bought this notebook.I feel very cheated here.

Hello,

Dell just release a new Thunderbolt firmware 4.26.03.001 ,A07
I installed it, and it seems to have destroyed my external HDMI port.
I tested it with different monitors and cables.
On some monitors the colors are inverted (white goes black). Some monitors don't display anything.

I hope the upgrade caused no hardware defect to the HDMI port.
Unfortunately I cannot find the old Thunderbolt firmware to got back.

Regards
Oliver

Same. Installed the new firmware successfully, restarted and now my HDMI port is more or less dead. The Laptop still detects the external monitor but it won't output anything.
Tried reinstalling the Intel HD Graphics driver, changing resolution, different cable, different monitor... nothing helps.

Hello, the thunderbolt on my X380 Yoga completely stopped working. The software installed fine but upon updating the firmware the following promt appears:    When I check the version inside the Thunderbold software, this is what shows up:    I am running Windows 10 Home 1803. Any idea why this is not working? Is my thunderbolt controller not working properly? Thanks

A:Thunderbolt not working / Unable to update thunderbolt firmware

There is an issue with the update for the tunderbolt firmware when updating through the system update utility. This is a known issue that the Engineering department has been working on. The only known resolution to this issue so far has been to replace the system board. Im sorry for the inconvenience this is causing. If the device is still under warranty i would speak with the support center to have a tech install a new board.

The first pop-up says "do not connect any Thunderbolt device", but then a second pop-up right before the firmware update says "connect at least one Thunderbolt device. I cancelled the update for now due to the conflicting pop-up messages. Note - I do not have any Thunderbolt devices connected to my X1E laptop. Can I upgrade Thunderbolt firmware safely with no Thunderbolt devices connected, or?

When I start the update, Thunderbolt doesn't appear in the device list. When the update starts, I briefly see the device in device manager, but then the update fails with this error. Then, Thunderbolt disappears from Device Manager. It's almost like Thunderbolt isn't turned on. I've tried disabling and reenabling in the BIOS to no avail.

I got the expected prompt to ensure I was plugged in. I then watched as the upgraded prompted me to install. Installation completed and everything appeared to be fine.  I powered down the thinkpad and disconnected. Worked from the living room, then went back to the dock. Connected, and noticed that before I connected the White light on the power button was illuminated. Shrugged, and pushed the power button. Nothing. I un-plugged the Dock, got a cup of coffee, returned and plugged it back in. Nothing. I then noticed that none of the pass-through power was working on the dock.  So, I unplugged it again.  Unplugged everything connected to it, and held the power button down for 15 seconds in an effort. All of this at the recommendation of Lenovo Support. Who, by the way, was very nice and well spoken. Nothing we did worked. I happened to have another Thunderbolt 3 cable in my bag, and no change. I powered up my new X1 Yoga, and connected the cable. No power. This wasn't passing power at all. Hi ! I have a W540 20BG-CT01WW Laptop since 2 years. He was originally on Windows 8. In November, I upgrade to Win 10 and have issues with 100% disk usage at startup for st least 5 minutes. Today, I tried for the first time the thunderbolt port with a MiniDP to HDMI dongle. Nothing happens. I tried twi different HDMI cables on two different TVs with the same issue. I update all my drivers from nvidia and intel, BIOS and Intel management. After updating the graphic drivers with the files on Lenovo website specific to my serial number, I was able to copy and extend to the tv. After unplug the dongle and plug it back, I wasnt able to reconnect the TV. I read a couple of forums about this type of problems, I uninstalled all the drivers, set the bios display to advanced, reinstall all the drivers again. When the laptop finished to reboot, i heard the sound when I connect a new device and I was able to use the tv as second monitor. It was working well until I reboot the laptop. Now it's not working at all and even if I uninstall all the drivers again and follow the same steps nothing works. I also install the thunderbolt software Can somebody helps me with this issue ?

Downloaded the newest Thunderbolt driver this morning. It MAYBE fixed the occasional outage problem that many are having with Thunderbolt/USB-C port adapters - jury is still out on that.
Here is what it DID NOT FIX: The fan speed. No matter what I plug in to that port, the fan revs up and stays up.
I disconnect all USB-C adapters and revert to my USB 3.0 equivalents and everything works fine. I have a 3.0 LAN/Gigabit port and a Plugable 3.0 to HDMI adapter that are working great with no fan revving.
The minute I use my USB-C versions, that fan gets spinning. Why? Watching my Task Manager, I can see 1-4% CPU, 20% Memory, 1-7% disk. There is NO REASON for that fan to be running.
Until Dell and Intel get that Thunderbolt port dialed in, I'm staying on good ol' USB 3.0. At one level, that is frustrating as I bought the XPS 15 partly because of the promise of the "One port to rule them all."

A:Dell XPS 15 9550 Thunderbolt and Fan Speed

I agree 100%. Bottom line is that ThunderBolt 3, at least in the XPS 15 9550 implementation, is not ready for prime time.
Right now I am running with my XPS 15 closed using an external monitor connected to the integrated HDMI port, a USB 3 adapter into which I have plugged my gigabit ethernet, my usb keyboard, and my integrated monitor webcam. I also have my wireless mouse dongle connected to one of the integrated laptop usb ports and have my power adapter connected. Fan is completely silent and everything works perfectly. I should be able to connect all of that thru the TB15 dock using the single Thunderbolt 3 connection to the XPS 15 9550 with exactly the same results. Unfortunately with the current state of drivers I cannot.
I bought my TB15 dock directly from Dell. Their can't be that many of us. You would think Dell would make the effort to make sure that all of us that did would be communicated to and taken care of...apparently not.

I note a new P51 (models 20HH, 20HJ) Thunderbolt Firmware update has just been posted on the support drivers page (24 Jul 2018) which is great news, but it's release note refers to Thunderbolt driver / software version 17.3.74.400. The Thunderbolt driver software currently available on the P51 20HH, 20HJ support drivers page is version 17.1.64.250, which is quite old. Please would you also put the latest Thunderbolt Software on this support drivers page. BTW: The P51 (models 20MM, 20MN) support drivers page does has the latest Thunderbolt Software (17.3.74.400), so I assume this could be installed on a P51 (models 20HH, 20HJ), as all models use the same Thunderbolt controller - ID 15D9 (Intel JHL6340).

I'm having issues getting the TB16 to work with the XPS 15 9550. I successfully installed all the drivers in the proper order as documented prior to plugging in the TB16 for the first time.

I've verified that I indeed do have a Thundrerbolt port - there is a Thunderbolt symbol next to the USB-C port.
When I do plug in the TB16 the power button on it will power the system off/on.
I've used a usb-c to Displayport adapter and a usb-c to usb 3.0 adapter with a flash drive. Both worked successfully so the basic functionality of the usb-c port is working.

When I plug in the TB16 I never got an authentication window pop-up. In the Thunderbolt software it shows no attached devices.

The details setting in the Thunderbolt software looks fine, it appears to have the proper driver and firmware levels.

When I check the Thunderbolt driver it says that 'the hardware device is not connected to the computer'.
I'm at a loss - everything looks good except for the fact that nothing happens when I plugin the TB16. I'm wondering if there's a hardware problem with the Thunderbolt controller itself? I'd appreciate any help that anyone can give me.

A:XPS 15 9550 - Thunderbolt port not working - TB16

You might open the Thunderbolt software and set it to allow all devices.  I reset my system and redid the TB16 and it shows the cable and dock as approved devices.
It was not hard for me.  The thunderbolt controller is on the computer.  You show some correct info for that controller, although since I have a 9365, that specific info may be different, but you do show a different controller generation..

After the time spent with Dell Support doing diagnostics and updating video drivers to those official Dell drivers on the support page, my new XPS 15 9550 with 4K touch display continues to struggle when using external monitors. I have two (2) Dell U2515H monitors.
I have updated ALL of the drivers and BIOS to the very latest files available on the Dell support page, including the newest Thunderbolt 3 driver.
When the laptop is NOT connected to any external monitors, I am NOT experiencing any trouble.
When the laptop is connected to ONE external monitor via the onboard HDMI port, I am NOT experiencing any trouble.
Trouble begins with the addition of ANY external monitor via the USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port.
I have experimented with the following three adapters, all producing the same result:

Dell USB-C to HDMI (2.0), part number 047KD7
Dell USB-C Port DA200, part number 5KMR3 REVA00
Cable Matters USB-C to DisplayPort
First, regardless of which adapter. my laptop ramps up the fan for as long as the adapter is present.

Second, although the monitor works with any of the adapters at the proper resolution, all of the screens will go black about every 10-20 minutes and the displays will seem to resize and reset. In this process, about half of the time, the windows open on the monitor connected to the USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port will either minimize or relocate to the primary display (the laptop screen). A:Trouble with XPS 15 9550, USB-C/Thunderbolt 3, and external monitors

This is apparently a problem with the Thunderbolt 3 driver/firmware and/or the Intel 530 graphics drivers. I see very similar issues using Dells new TB15 Thunderbolt 3 Dock. Normally when I'm in my home office I use my 9550 with the lid closed using an external monitor connected to the HDMI port. All works perfectly. When I try to use the Dell Thunderbolt 3 Dock and connect my external display to its HDMI port it is unstable. Sometimes the external screen goes blank for a few seconds. When the system wakes up from sleep or I reboot it it does not come up on the external display but I have to open the laptop and switch back to the external monitor. Basically it is unusable. Still waiting for Dell to fix the issues.

Hello, we are trying to update Thunderbolt firmware on one of my colleague's Lenovo P50 since it does not recognise Akitio external PCIe box (his NVM version is 16). We updated all the drivers including BIOS. We updated the Thunderbolt Software. But we cannot update the Thunderbolt firmware. We downloaded this: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/be/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-... namely: n1etf08w.exe We tried to install it as administrator, but it gives an error, something along the lines of: "PM driver is old, please update the PM driver first.". We updated the Power Management driver: https://support.lenovo.com/be/en/downloads/ds032258 And we can see in device manager that it is currently the latest version. But Thunderbolt firmware still does not install giving the same error saying that PM driver is old. Is PM driver the Power Management driver or something else? What might be the problem?

Hi, I just recieved a 200W thunderbolt 3 docking station for my Z book. I grabbed the latest driver and firmware from HP. I installed the driver with no issue. But when I go to install the firmware I get this message "Your Host Device is not ready, Firmware Upgrade Failed!!!, Please reboot your PC then try again!!!". I have tried restarting and reinstalling, both form my desktop and using the HP Download and Install Assistant , but to no avail. Not too sure what to do now.

Hi, What should be the "standard" version of the Thunderbolt firmware for a recent T570 20H9 machine? When I look at my configuration, I see 4.0.4 ... (see below jpg file)But the AKITIO manufacturer of the Thunderbolt T3T adapter requires a revision 16 for the firmware (Thunderbolt software number is ok as it should be at least 15.3.40.275). My external Thunderbolt disk is a Rugged "RAID-0 mode" 4Tb diskSo I use  AKITIO T3T adapter to connect Thinkpad thunderbolt-3 portto my external diskI can not find revision 16 on the Lenovo site ...Any advice? Regards

When installing the thunderbolt firmware update utility I receive the following error: "No active Thunderbolt(TM) controller found in the system or Thunderbolt software is not present in the system. Make sure you have Thunderbolt software installed. Then connet Thunderbolt device and press OK to retry or cancel to abort firmware update process." I have the software installed. And the thunderbolt port doesn't give power to my TB16 dock (no light when plugging the cable in unlike on my dell precision work laptop).

I just bought a Dell TB16 USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 dock for my Dell XPS 9550. I updated the BIOS and drivers for both units using Dell Command Update, but now every time I boot up my computer I get a message stating "your PC may need updates for the Thunderbolt 3 port to function properly. For more information go to thunderbolttechnology.net/updates". That link, in turn, refers me to the Dell page that tells me to do the updates I've already done.
It's annoying to get this message even though everything appears to be up to date. Anyone run into this and have a solution?

You have done the firmware update which might be required on some systems?

There have been several reports of the Thunderbolt 3 port on the XPS 15 9550 (and 13 9350) being configured to a PCI 2x port instead of the more usual PCI 4X port. Users have been reporting speeds of up to 16 Gbps, only half of the advertised speed (40 Gbps) which should be 32 Gbps (with overheads) for data.

The result is significantly TB reduced performance to comparable machines, especially when using an external GPU set up.
If this is not hardwarematically configured as such, it may be possible this could be fixed with a firmware update. Will this be coming?

I'm trying to use the Dell XPS 15 9550 with Windows 10, and I connected two external monitors, one to HDMI, one to Thunderbolt.
Only the one connected to Thunderbolt works, the other doesn't, it simply says no signal.
The cables and the port itself definitely work, if I switch to Ubuntu, both screens work.
On Windows, only the Thunderbolt works, even if I connect only one screen, the HDMI output doesn't work. I tried all combination of screens and cables, and in all combinations it is always the Thunderbolt output that works.
I'm on the latest updates with Windows 10. Latest NVidia drivers. Tried the latest Intel graphics drivers from the Dell site, also the latest ones from the Intel site.
One extra information: some forums suggested checking the NVidia Control Panel, but there I only have the "3D Settings" node in the tree, nothing else.
(I've googled a lot and read all the forum threads I could find, but nothing worked.)

Does anyone have problems during the installation of Tunderbolt 3 firmware update? Mine just got an error that says "This method is not implemented in any class". The update to be installed is "Thunderbolt Firmware Update Utility for Windows 10 (64-bit), 8.1 (64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad P51s".

On my P52, I was prompted to install an update, Thunderbolt Firmware Utility - V1.0.12-N2CHF10W. However, it did not install, and I thought I saw something on here about people having issues with that. What's going on? Should I bother trying to install the update? It tried to have me connect a TB device, and I was scared I'd brick something.

I have a T470 20HD running Windows 10 Pro. Both the operating system and all Lenovo updates have been applied. Attached to thos is a Plugable-brand USB3 dual HDMI docking station that's been driving a pair of Dell SE2417HG(HDMI2) screens. Or did, until I did the Integrated Firmware of Thunderbolt Function 1.0.12.0-N1QTF16W update, at which point it now only drives a single screen. Windows sees both displays but now can't use one. I've tested both displays and they work fine otherwise, and if I unplug one display the dock will "fail over" to the other display without an issue. Is there a way to roll back this firmware update, or am I basically out of luck?
