Can't install windows 8.1 pro Error code: 0xc0000001

Q: Can't install windows 8.1 pro Error code: 0xc0000001

I have recently finished building a desktop and have been trying to install windows 8.1 for some time with no success my hardware is:
Mobo: Asrock 98ODE3
CPU: AMD FX-4300 3.8GHz Quad-Core
Graphics card: PowerColor Radeon R7 370 2GB PCS+
RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866
Hard drive: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
I have created a bootable USB for Windows 8.1 pro and set the BIOS Boot priority as the USB 1st and hard drive 2nd.
Each time I try it begins to boot showing the windows logo but will then show an error screen showing:
'Recovery
Your PC needs to be repaired
The application or operating system couldn't be loaded beacuse a required file is missig or contains errors.
File:\windows\system32\boot\winload.exe
Error code: 0xc0000001
You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you dont have any installation media (like a disc or USB device) contact you system administrator or PC manufacturer.
Press Enter to try again
Press F8 for Startup Settings'

Attempting to press either Enter or F8 will cause the scren to flash black for less than a second and return to this error screen.
any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I've looked each post about this error and still can't find a way to install Windows 7.

First my configuration :
- Asus Maximus Gene 3 with latest BIOS
- Core i5 760
- 4 * 4 Go DDR 3
- GTX 570
- 120 Go SSD.
(new configuration assembly by hand)

Second the error :
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the case. To fix the problem:

Insert your Windows 7 installation disk and restart you computer.
Choose your language and click “next”.
Click” repair” your computer.

If you don’t have the disk contacts your administrator or your pc vendor.

File \Windows\sysytem32\boot\winload.exe

Status; 0XC0000001

Info:The selected entry couldn’t be loaded because the application is missing or corrupted.

I've tried to install it from DVD (retail), and 2 different USB Key (with official usb key maker, from Windows 7 x64 via vmware on mac) : Got the same error
Tried to use only 4 Go of Ram : Same Error.
MemCheck via Ubuntu Live USB : No Error on RAM (all four passed)
Tried to format and copy install files on SSD : Still failed.
Tried another hard drive (250 Go SATA) : still failed.
Booting from Backtrack/Ubuntu live usb.

I'm out of solutions.

Can you help me ?

Thanks

Update 1 : XP Proo x64 is installing fine.

My brothers Asus G75v doesn't boot. When I try I either get a black screen or error code 0xc0000001. I tried the f9 at the start to go into recovery but it doesn't work. The computer had a ssd upgrade a while back and the recovery partition is now on the ssd (i used migration software at the time and the original hdd is still in the computer but formatted). I am not sure if that is the cause that the f9 doesn't work. I took out the ssd and put it in my desktop. I can see all the files and partition. I have check it for error with the chkdsk command but it didn't help. I copy the recovery partition into a usb to see if I could boot off of that but the computer just didn't see the drive. Does any body know what to fix this?

thanks in advance!

Hi everyone, I have this weird problem going on right now and hope somebody will have a solution to this. (I'll try to make it as clear as possible)

I previously had windows 8 installed on my HDD. Yesterday, I bought a new intel SSD 330 series and installed it in my desktop. I then format the whole HDD (everything wiped clean) and start a fresh windows 8 installation on the new SSD. But after the first step of installation were done and windows prompts to "remove the bootable USB drive and click ok to restart". I followed the instruction and after the restart, it report the error code 0xc0000001.

I Googled up the error code and tried all possible solutions such as using 3 bootrec commands, use the repair tool that came with windows 8 installation, running chkdsk on all drives and such. But none work. My last option was to remove the HDD and DVD drive from the motherboard and windows loaded up just fine. Thought the problem is solved, I turn it off to reconnect the HDD and DVD, after that everything boot up like normal. Until I click the restart button. 0xc0000001 error came back on and I had to remove the SSD, HDD and DVD drive from the system -> reconnect the SSD -> boot up -> turn it off -> reconnect the other 2.

Just like that, the error comes on everytime I hit the restart button. I'm not sure if this is a motherboard problem or an error caused by windows. (Setting priority boot option in BIOS doesn't solve the problem)

Any ideas guys? Any help ... Read more

My laptop came preintalled with Windows 8. I did the upgrade to 8.1. Then in beginning Aug. 2015 sometime I upgraded to Windows 10. However I did something rather stupid! Yup didn't copy any recovery, nothing. So now that I wanted to go back to Windows 8, my pc came up with and Error!! File: \windows\system32\winload.efi Error Code: 0xc0000001. So I have talked with Toshiba, which they advise me that its my hard drive and I need a recovery disc. Microsoft is telling me to go back onto their web site and download Windows 8 and then try and re-install windows 8 on my pc. I can't not find where to download windows 8. I did order a new laptop from toshiba, because it was going to be really cheaper to get a new one than to fix my 3 year old pc. Any help?

Explorer.exe will fail on me, and I have tried the src thing using run but it will open and immediately close on me. I didn't have a recovery disk so I just recently bought one. I "think" I made the recovery disk correctly. When I put the cd in, I got an error that the file winload.exe with the error code 0xc0000001 saying the file may be missing or may be corrupt. Contact Asus to see if you can purchase recovery media (I've been told that they stopped providing recovery media).
If not available from them, then purchase it elsewhere.

FWIW - you can create a repair USB drive from any Win8.1 system.
Don't bother copying the recovery partition as it likely won't work on the Asus
You won't be able to reinstall Windows with this (unless you can access the RESET function through the tools), but you will be able to run the different repair functions.

I suspect a problem with the hard drive when I see an error of 0xc0000001 - but that's just a guess on my part.
You can try these free, bootable diagnostics: Initial Hardware Diagnostics

Evidently while trying to take advantage of the Windows 10 Upgrade, somehow some damage was done to a file(s) from my old  Windows 8.1 OS pertaining to a missing, or damaged, file....  \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe  ...  which
in turn rewflects an Error code:  0xc0000001...
At any rate, as a result, I am not able to boot up without an installation disc, nor perform the requested "Restart" to continue with the Windows 8.1 reinstallation because of this Error, and missing file(s), and am at my wits end...
Please does anyone have any idea what my best course of action might be at this point, as I have seeminglly tried everything that I could think of for the better part of two weeks now.
Last night a gal that lives a few doors down checked in on me, because she hadn't seen me for those two weeks and was just pretty concerned about whether I was allright or not, and she suggested that I take the laptop to an outside Technician, but
unfortunately, I am a disabled  U.S. Veteran, and I just don't have alot of money to work with.
If someone could please help me with this litlle bit of a predicament, I would surely appreciate it more than you could ever know.
Thank you....  And I Wish you Happy Holidays!

Hello really need your help as i have hit a brick wall.

My new build with windows 8.1 installs fine but keeps crashing not even long enough to create account.

The specs for my pc are:

AMD A8-6600k 3.90GHz
TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8gb (2 x 4gb)
Gigabyte F2A88XM-HD3 AMD 88X
Kingston 120gb SSD
Superflower 300w Power Supply

When i first installed windows it worked for an hour or two then crashed, but now keeps crashing after minutes, and get the error code 0xc0000001 on startup.

Heres what i have tried so far:

Reinstalled windows 8.1 on same ssd and also tried it installed on a different HDD
Made sure cpu was correctly seated and checked everything is correctly connected.
Swapped RAM for another set which i know works from another computer
Flashed Bios to latest version
Run a cpu stress tests using UBCD which gave no errors
even tried installing windows 7 which still does the same

The pc never crashes in bios or when using UBCD.

Theres nothing more i can think of to try so would really appreciate any suggestions?

Ryan

I presume you have installed the correct drivers from the device manufacturers. Have you tested for a defective component in the system? Mismatched RAM sticks can cause problems also.

You could also do a stress test, see this site:

So my computer (HP pavilion HPE) BSOD'ed for the first time yesterday afternoon (running Windows 8.1, upgraded via download from original Windows 7, so I don't have a recovery disc). Along with the error code, the BSOD says that File: \WINDOWS\system32\winload.exe is missing or contains errors.

I have tried pressing F8, Shift+F8, and holding Shift on start up, and nothing works. I know I'm supposed to upload dump files with this post, but I can't/don't know how to get my computer to the point where I can access these files. In order to access the Windows Dump files, you can do the following :-

1. Download Ubuntu ISO file from the official sources and install it on a PenDrive/FlashDrive.
2. Boot the laptop using the Pendrive. Incase it is not booting via the Pendrive, make sure that on opening the Boot Manager, the priority for the Flash Drive is set at topmost.
3. Once, you are given the option to either Try or Install Ubuntu, click on Try.
4. Open the Explorer in Linux and browse in the default installation directory of your laptop.
5. Goto C:/Windows/MiniDump/
6. In the trial mode of linux, you can do almost everything so connect to Internet and upload the dump files here after zipping them up.

Let me know incase any further help is needed

Background:

? Upgraded to Windows 8.1 preview from Windows 8, works fine for weeks.

? Randomly crashed one day. I believe it may have been waking from sleep mode when this happened. It cited:

"Recovery

Your PC needs to be repaired

The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.

File: c:\system32\winload.exe
Error code: 0xc0000001"

? I've tried many recovery paths. BCDedit, bcdboot, fixboot, Windows 8 & 8.1 recovery media. For all of these I think I am either doing them wrongly or I get an error message that says it can't access/edit the bit where Windows 8.1 preview is.

? On a different drive I have a copy of Windows 8 that I used to clone to the other harddrive (now containing crashed 8.1 preview) over a year ago. They are unrelated I believe.

? There's a suspicious lack of Windows related folders on the D:\ drive containing the crashed Windows 8.1. D:\windows doesn't exist and D:\WINDOWS only contains one folder: "logs". The other folders such as "program files" are all locked.
This issue has baffled me. Does anyone have any ideas?

Or, if you think it would help, logs or tests that I can provide to help clarify my issue?

Many thanks.

Hello everybody,
Randomly today my computer decided it did not want to boot. It originally had a different error code, but I found a tutorial on how to fix it, I followed the tutorial and my problem stayed the same but my error code changed. Basically something is wrong with my boot sector.
The initial code was 0xc0000225 and I used this tutorial to solve it: Solution to your PC needs to be repaired Error code: 0xc0000225
After that I got the new error: 0xc0000001. I have tried rebuilding the BCD, I have tried fixing the master boot record. I even started to go as far as to do a system "refresh" but windows told me that the HDD was locked and I have to unlock it to do a refresh, which Id much rather not do. When I tried to rebuild the BCD it detected my OS but when I told it to add it to the boot list it says "The requested system device cannot be found". The weirdest thing is everywhere I look I am told to use the windows startup settings but they are totally missing from the menu. I booted to my bootable Windows 8 64 bit flash drive, selected repair my computer, then selected troubleshoot and advanced options and the only things that are available are system restore, system image recovery, automatic repair and command prompt. right under command prompt is where startup settings should be. anybody have any ideas!? im really frustrated with this. A:BSOD While windows is loading, error 0xc0000001

I got this error yesterday on a Samsung laptop (it came with Win8, but was downgraded to Win7)
This was after I had updated the BIOS(UEFI).

It turns out that the update had turned the UEFI/Secure Boot back on.T

Turning it off and enabling Legacy/CSM in the UEFI allowed me to boot to Win7 without issue. Try that with yours (or, if it's off, try turning it on).

Let us know if this helps. If not there's several other things to try.

After downloading Windows 10 several (several) times, I continue to run into the same error code.  I have tried everything I've read: clean boots, removing $Windows.~BT & $Windows.~WS, Playing with /Windows/SoftwareDistribution, etc..  If it's on the web under 80070005, I've tried it.

Any assistance would be appreciated!

A:Windows 10 Install Error Code: 80070005

Hi,
There are a number of known installation problems for Win10 upgraders that don't correspond to publicly listed error codes.
It would be helpful if we knew the Make/Model of the computer you have the failed WinX attempt on, as well as the Build year if you know that too.

The main issue is what version of Windows did you attempt to upgrade FROM?  Your post didn't say.  Since we are missing this information, we will need it to further diagnose your problem.  In the meantime, if your computer came with Win7/8/8.1 pre-loaded on it, you shouldn't have that problem, and most likely you'll simply need to download the FREE ISO file for WinX directly from Microsoft's website and install from there via cd/dvd or usb media.

If your computer hardware was built prior to 2006, and it's an XP-era computer that was upgraded to Win7/8/8.1 you'll never be able to get the Win10 upgrade.  That's one of the reasons I'm asking you these questions.

Generally speaking, Microsoft has publicly stated in many online sources this week that if your hardware is capable of running Win7 SP1 or Win8.1, both the downloadeable upgrade to WinX and the clean install ISO file are guaranteed to work.

If your computer was built in 2006 or after, the chances are good that you can solve your problems by doing a manual clean install with the ISO file downloaded media as described above.  If you have a modern computer, and that's defined as ... Read more

Hello and thank you for having such an awesome site where all sorts of questions can be answered. This is my first time here so the next couple of questions might seem kinda weird. I recently had a rash of system freeze ups and crashes and after I got all that out of the way and taken care of, my CD-R/RW Drive failed to function. I thought this was odd and removed the drive for the old DVD-ROM drive I previously had installed(which worked like 2 days ago) and had the same problem. For my birthday yesterday I got a Sony DVD -/+ Drive and installed it into my computer and the Add Hardware Wizard recognized the drive but never told me that the drive was installed and ready to use or even finished the Add Hardware Wizard. Very odd I thought! When I go to the Device Manager to try and manually install the drive, I can see the drive under the DVD/CD-ROM tab but I get this instead :"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" What prompts Wndows to do this? I never had Easy CD Creator installed on my computer, but I did buy this off E-bay so I really don't know if the previous owner did! Can anyone help me as to why this is happening? Also when I boot up my computer, I get a screen asking which Windows XP Home I want to run, but I should only have one. How can I remove this to get Windows started without having to go through all of the hassle of pressing keys while my monitor is powering up? Thank you ver... Read more

I have tried updating to Windows 10 using the windows 10 setup found on https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10, but I keep getting the error code 0x190011f when it is getting ready to install Windows 10. I have Kaspersky
security and I have disabled that while updating, and I have removed all items in USB ports. I also did a cleanup of my computer, as well as trying to start the download in the command prompt using wuauclt.exe/updatenow and nothing seems to be working.

Hi,

I recently reinstalled windows 7 on my computer after experiencing many crashes and update failures. Windows update succesfully installed all the other updates except for service pack 1. I've tried Microsoft fixit tool and Windows system update readiness tool. I've also tried clean boot, disk check, SFC... all without success.
I really don't wish to reinstall windows again for the 100th time
Appreciate your help.

Hi all

I am new to the forum. Nice to meet you all

I need to some help that I have put off since last month due to personal life stuff outside of Windows 7. I notice windows update is failing bad installing three updates. Two of those was last month and one very new update a few days ago.

I read the rules about posting and one things it mentions in the post was to post up the CBS log file buts it over 1gb and it wont open it even when zipped. I did ran sfc last month but it didnt pick up anything. Enabling and disabling windows updated trigger anything to work. I havent uninstalled SP1 yet but how safe is this?

My OS is: Windows 7 pro SP1 64bit.

The three updates are:

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3126587)

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3126593)

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3140410)

And they all have the same error code: 80073701. I did find a standalone installer for KB3126587 but the error message I keep getting when I run it is: "The update is not applicable to your system". Even though it damn well is the correct version.
Any directions on where to go from here? I feel like I have run out of options

Hi Mallett,
OK lets go with what we can get. you said that sfc was fine last month.
Can you post the windows update log from the last sfc rundate
Run the SURT from here
Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [October 2014] from Official Microsoft Download Center
and for good measure

I am having an issue installing Windows Updates (WU) all have Error Code: 80070005.

Nine updates installed after several tries, but there are about 50 updates waiting to be downloaded and installed.

I ran the SURT, but it kept spinning...all day, so I canceled it. Tried running it again, but it wouldn't let me run it again.

I ran the SFC Scan and have the SFC detail log attached. Appears a lot of files were repaired and some could not be repaired. The files that couldn't be repaired are mostly sample MS music, pictures, etc. Stuff I am not interested in.

Maybe one of my cleaners deleted same as a useless/unused file or maybe a virus corrupted some files? I didn't see anything in the SFC detail log pertaining to WU?

The CBS compressed zip log is 13.6MB, which is over the 8MB upload limit, so couldn't upload it?

On June 23, 2016, MSSE picked up a Rogue: JS/FakeCall.D labeled (Severe). It was quarantined by MSSE, I deleted it.

Malwarebytes this past week picked up and quarantined a few rootkits labeled as severe or a threat. I deleted those. Not sure if these items affected WU or not?

Would the Windows Update - Reset tutorial would work to fix my WU issue here? Seems like a uncomplicated fix?

So any help here would be appreciated, Thanks!

A:Windows Updates won't install, Error Code: 80070005

Hi Vista32,
Thats not good reading.
Most system security experts would advise a complete RE-install of any OS compromised by a Rootkit, but you, from your own admission, have had few.
Iam NOT a security expert but in this case I WOULD, if you can identify them, look them up at BleepingComputers they have an excellent catalogue of Rootkits and there impact/removal.
Just removing them does NOT allways guarentee a clean system.

Having said that SFC has done a pretty good job of repairing some of whats been infected/changed, but it is advised to run it 3x.
From what i can see there are certainly still some errors, in Windows media player, and there are likely to be others
SURT can take >>hours<< to run especially on a previously infected system, as it also makes repairs as it goes along

You can run the troublshooter, if you want.

G'day guys. As the title says I've been getting an 80073712 error while trying to install some updates.

Updates and errors:
Important:
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3068708). Published 9/06/2015

Optional:
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2574819). Published 10/09/2013
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2592687). Published 10/09/2013
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2830477). Published 11/02/2014

Logs:
Attached as well as the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

Additional info:

These files have been turning up in my external hard drive while I try to do the updates. At first I didn't know what they were but after some searching it turned out that they were just where the downloaded updates were stored. May or may not be relevant. Tried doing an update with the hard drive unplugged through the System and Security/Windows Update interface and it still failed.

I also tried to download and install the KB3068708 important update manually from the microsoft website but when I tried to install it it said something along the lines of "Update not applicable to your computer".

Hello, I have tried unsuccessfully to install IE10 on my Windows 7 64 bit system.

First, I wanted to say that yes, I am planning on following the posting instructions (system update readiness tool, and SFC scan posts), but first, I wanted to introduce the problem that I am having.

I was directed here after a search by this post: IE10 Installation Fails - Win 7 Pro 64-bit SP1 - Microsoft Community

I have submitted my own question to Answers.microsoft.com and simply linking that will show you what I have already done rather than typing it all out. Here it is: IE 10 will not install on Windows 7 64 bit Professional with SP1 - Microsoft Community

In this link you can see my error codes and whatnot. If you want me to post it all here, let me know.

So, here I am. I will run the System Update readiness tool tonight when I leave (I am at work). But in the meantime, if there is anything else you want from me, please let me know.

Thank you,
Dan

Stopped Windows Update service and renamed Software Distribution folder, tried again but no good.

Hi i am trying to help my friend out he bought his son a emachines em350 netbook with windows 7 installed. For some reason it got messesd up and he tried to do a system restore. Since then when you try to boot up its saying input a password to unlock the harddrive which we dont know. After you input wrong code 3 times you get option to continue which takes you to black screen saying no bootable device detected press any key to continue. Next i tried to do clean install with windows 7 from a usb this goes fine untill it asks for missing cd/dvd driver i have found away round this which is to select cancel then when back on install now screen swap the usb to another port and continue. This works so i select terms and so on then get to part where it asks where to install windows now i have formated and made a active partition on the hard drive but when i try to click next i get error code 0x8007045d this is where im stuck. I have also tried anothe r hard drive and i get the same thing any ideas anyone. Thank you in advarnce.

A:Windows 7 error code 0x8007045d during clean install.

The HD may be damaged, do you have anyway to do an HD test from anything that came with Acer? Like a diagnostic cd?

Second, what is this password that it is prompting? Was the netbook's HD encrypted or is it a BIOS password of some sort?

Third, the problem may be the Win 7 installation on your usb stick.. perhaps from a bad ISO. Try to re-make it.

I just got a new Dell Inspirion laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium Service pack 2. As usual there were several Windows Security updates that needed to be installed. Took two days to install them all. Or I thought all had installed. But after Secunia PSI kept insisting that no updates were installed, I checked the update history and found several had failed to install. All have the same Error code of 800F0902

I ran Microsoft Fixit tool, which said it detected no problems. But obviously that too failed.

The list of updates that failed are too numerous to report but here a few:

KB2909210

KB2656356

KB2789645

KB2756921

Most seemed to have to do with the Net Framework 3.5.1.

Does anyone have a clue how I can resolves this? Most importantly is my new Dell a lemon?

Thank for your time,

A:Windows updates will not install error code 800F0902

Have you tried installing them 1-by-1; re-booting after each?I'm not sure why .NET 3.5.1 is trying to install when .NET 4.5 is the current version.

I can not for the life of me get SP1 to install. It always gives me the 80070002 error.

I've done what the microsoft help says to do which is clear out my updates list after stopping windows update in services then starting them again but it just produces the same error code.

I've run the system update readiness tool as well as a sfc /scannow and heres the CBS zip, a zip containing all the cbspersists(so I get them both uploaded under the limit) and a screenshot of the error.

This is starting to affect my ability to play newer games giving me 3B bluescreen errors and the like.

Thank you so much in advance for any help you can provide me! -Tera

Hey guys!

So I will start by saying I am pretty tech savvy, so don't try to dumb it down for me. If I have a question, I will ask!

So, we got a computer into our class (I'm a student at a High School). It is a personal favour. It started with Dell telling me it couldn't locate it's BCD FIles. I did some tracking, and couldn't find the files needed, and they don't have any discs or USB's provided by the OEM. Great. That's a problem.

My second thought was to grab Hiren's BootCD v15.2 to grab anything important off of the drive (It has Linux and MiniXP. Both options failed. Kind of starting to irritate me at this point. I asked the person if anything important was on there, the answer was no, so I went with a full reinstall.

Now, I do have a Dell DIsc, which is authorized for any Dell Computer to install Windows 8. But of a brick wall, but no R/W Disc. Transferred things into an ISO for a USB stick using Rufus. Boot into it, fails. Now I'm really mad. At this point I went into the CMD from "Repair" option in the stick. I cleaned the drive of ALL info, drive letters, everything. I created a new volume to store info, assigned a Drive letter ( C:\ ). The new drive is a RAW data storage type, "converted", got an error, checked and it said it was NTFS. Great, reboot, retry an Install -- fails.

I'm quickly running out of options now. I'm lost to what to do, the issue simulates what happened to my personal machine a number of years ago, but that was ... Read more
