wireless doesn’t work after reinstall OS

Q: wireless doesn’t work after reinstall OS

Hi all,
I purchased a used IBM T41 laptop with WinXP and everything was working fine: cable and wireless internet, Dvd reader , wireless signal (like antenna) was flashing at the bottom of the screen, .
I had some problem and reinstalled OS: deleted partition and formatted into NTFS, install fresh WinXP.
I didnt get any error during installation, but some problem came after: internet, wireless connection, USB drivers, DVD reader and many other.
I couldnt find network adapter name in the Device manager.
To fix this problem I download drivers from IBM site and try one by one to install it.
Finally my internet start to work and I do not have any yellow question mark in Device Manger, but wireless internet and dvd writer do not work.
Network Adapter( in the Device Manader) and Network Connection display only cable internet device and do not have Wireless device type. Also, I have Wireless Link and Wireless Network icons on the Control panel.
Why wireless doesnt work? How can I fix it?
Is this possible that my laptop did not have wireless card before?
Is this possible that card stopped to work after reformatting to NTFS?

Thank you

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi. I have four HP Envy notebook computers that I use regularly at work. Suddenly, starting up one day, all four computers stopped connecting to our wireless network. I tried at a different wireless network and neither of the computers still cant connect. I even tried a third and still no result. All of my other computers that runs Windows 10 (2 Acer, 1 Asus, 8 iMac) are still able to connect to all of the wireless networks. I even run Windows 10 on all 8 iMacs and they can still connect to all of the networks. And there hasnt been any chances to the wireless network. Strange thing is when I bring the computers to my home they can find my wireless network at home, all four of them with no problem. Ive tried all Windows repair and HP assistant and none of it works. Ive updated to the latest drivers and all I can think of. What can have happened. Ive noticed it has been a Windows update, but if that update have affected the network drivers,  how can it the work at home. I can also add that all four laptops work if I use Ethernet. Hope someone can help out. //Richard

Hello @Richard63, Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums, I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I read your post about the WiFi issue, and wanted to assist you!  I understand that the Envy notebooks will no longer connect to the network.  However, they all connect to your home network.   If you believe an update to be the cause, you can try performing a System Restore, to set the notebooks back to their previous working states.  You can also try uninstalling the network drivers, then restarting the notebooks.  This should allow the system to install compatible drivers.  If you continue to have issues with the notebooks only connecting to the home network, then you may consider restarting/resetting the router.  Please post back with the results. Please let me know if this information helps you resolve the issue by marking this post as "Accept as Solution", this will help others easily find the information they may be looking for.  Also, clicking the Thumbs up below is a great way to say thanks! Have a great day!

Yesterday i installed a PCI wifi card in my pc after which my sound completely stopped working, i have tried updating drivers, selecting the right speakers in the windows control panel and pretty much any other suggestion i found on other sites. My concern is that i might have damaged my motherboard while installing the PCI (I hit it with a screw driver when trying to remove my GPU to fit the PCI in), and that this is the cause of the problem. Do you have any other ideas on how i can fix my sound in windows or should i just assume i damaged the motherboard and buy a soundcard/ a new motherboard?

A:Solved: PC sound doesn´t work.

The test is to remove the wireless card, as of course beofre you installed this the sound worked
If it then still does not work and there are no warnings shown in device manager for the sound then I think you can presume that you have indeed damaged the motherboard.
That said, is the sound coming from the integrated sound chip or from the GPU

Hi all,

I had consistent problems with Limited Access and losing connection in general on my one-year-old Samsung laptop. After trying various fixes, with none of them working as needed, I eventually decided to try to uninstall the wireless device, as suggested here. And following the described procedure I expected the device to reinstall after reboot and to have wireless access once again, whether that solved the mentioned problem or not. Procedure was: Device Manager > Select device (Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter) > Right click "uninstall" and the device was removed.

However, after Windows installed available drivers after startup (v10.0.250 or something of sort), I couldn't connect to home wireless network. Check the Image-1 to see the dialog box in lower right. I updated the drivers to the latest ones I could find, even before uninstalling, but it didn't help. I pulled out a cable, connected and right now I'm ~7 hours total searching for a fix and I finally decided to come to you all as there's nothing I could find to fix it myself. Below are some info that might be relevant.

Chrome is up to date along with the laptop cam driver. I even tried with all chrome extensions disabled and it still doesn't work.

Examples of websites are https://www.onlinemictest.com/webcam-test/, https://webcamtests.com/
The Cam will not work on chrome on these or any other websites that I have tried, but it works just fine on those same websites on firefox.

Any ideas on what it could be?

I think you mean you have a PS/2 mouse. Try another mouse, and see if that cures the problem. If not remove the mouse from Device Manager and on re-boot let Windows re-detect it to see if that helps.

Exact same problem on Windows 10.
Tried all of six steps above, including buying three new cables in step 6 one of those was the specific cable recomended by HP support.
Make 9 calls to HP  and 4 calls to Microsoft. HP signed me up for their paid Freinds Support and I called them 5 times.
I tried the monitor on a surface Book, and Asus Desktop and a Dell Destop. Did not work on any of them. I have installed the latest drivers multiple times and update the firmware in my laptops, Surface Dock and Asus Desktop.
HP connected to my Surface Book several times and installed two different - third psrty partitioning programs. One didn't work the other did but it was a trial version and wanted more money than I felt it should cost.

I'm using it as a single monitor with no partitioning. It mostly works but has some strange events where the mouse clicks are off by several undred pixles. rebooting fixes that.

Now I have atiny little spider runing arround under the front glass. Very distracting. How did it even get in there? I would have thought the area between the glass and the disply would be sealed arround the edges.

Essentially, everything is wrong with my computer and I have no way to fix it. The first problem arose about a year ago. My laptop battery suddenly wouldn?t register any charge, and could only be used while plugged in. I thought that might be a battery issue, but, a few months later, I replaced the battery and still had the same issue. Next, I started getting the ?blue screen of doom,? the Kernel Data Inpage Error. My laptop began to consistantly stop working after a few hours of use: webpages would stop loading, files wouldn?t open after being clicked, and then the mouse and screen would become unresponsive. Most of the time, I turn the computer off, unplug it, and restart it to resume use. However, if I left the computer on, it would either give a black screen reading ?all boot options are tried,? or the blue Kernel Data Inpage Error screen (the Kernel Data Inpage Error is the rarer of the two). It would last longerer the less I used it and after repeated sessions of rebooting after freezing, it would only last a few minutes. It also took a while after startup before it could open programs or load websites, but besides this, it still functioned as a proper computer, so, while frustrated and constantly attempting to find a solution, I dealt with it. However, recently, it?s begun to have errors opening any program not factory installed with windows or Google Chrome (I have no idea why Chrome, other browsers won?t open). Originally, I received an error box that... Read more

After travelling with my Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop, as many times before, I took it out to start it up, re-installing the Linksys Wireless Network Adapter. The pc was unable to connect to the router and then it crashed. After a few tries, I rebooted and tried to uninstall/reinstall the software, it crashed again during uninstall. It proceeded to crash from boot up or Windows Logo screen until I gave up and packed it back up. Now at home, I tried to re-boot and still crashed at boot. After some research, I finally was able to get enough info to understand the flashing blue screen error message. It was a stop error 0x0000008E. More research and I tried to boot with only one memory stick. It booted up and I had to choose "Last known good config". I then tried the other stick in the other memory slot and it worked too. Hmmm! not sure why! So both sticks and slots work. I decided to try both sticks again and again had to choose "last known good config" and then it booted. So, I don't know if that problem is solved or just at bay for a little longer but, I can still not install or uninstall or update the driver for the wireless card. In Add/Remove programs it shows the Wireless-G Network Adapter with a 0.03 mb file that will not uninstall. If I try to re-install or update drivers it says it is already installed or that drivers already exist and are up to date. Sorry for the book but, I wanted to give as much info as I could. Since there have been no replies to this, I wanted to update so others with a similar problem may find an answer. I have fixed the problem. It was a registry issue. I was able to get a registry cleaner from the adapter's manufacturer. Though, booting the pc with only one memory stick and finding out the Stop error were also instrumental. After using the cleaner, I downloaded the drivers to another pc and used a flash drive to reintroduce them to my laptop. I am happy to say that I am back up and running with no subsequent crashes and plenty on internet access. Thank You for all of your Help!

I?m sure that the adapter Intel AC 8260 support the WoWLAN function, I checked the documents of Intel. I restored the system to the Windows preload environment, and it not works. I checked the BIOS, the setting ?Wake On Lan? has been enabled, and I uninstalled and then updated the drivers of the wireless network adapter, it doesn?t work still. I googled some methods such as edit the Registry Editor, download the driver (Enabling Wake on LAN) at the lenovo support website, etc., but non-effective. I guess is there something wrong with the drivers or BIOS of X1 Yoga? Or X1 Yoga just simply doesn?t support WoWLAN? Or this problem is due to a hardware failure on some batches? Anyone has any suggestion? Thanks a lot!

I have no problems enabling my wireless connection and connecting to the internet. The wireless does like to disconnect and reconnect about 3 or 4 times an hour which is another problem I have. I believe this LAC problem started around the same time I was trying to get shared music between my computers on iTunes. Hi

I had to reinstall winxp on my computer. In my previous installation i had moved mydocuments folder to point to another folder on another drive (lets say d:\documents).

Once i reinstalled win xp over existing installation, i used the same administrator account and password. I see the win xp installation resets the location of the mydocuments folder to the default location.

But now when i try to open the d:\documents folder it gives me an access denied error. somehow it thinks the new administrator account does not have the right privileges. I cannot access anything inside this folder.

can someone tell me how to solve this problem. or better work around the access denied message. once i retrieve all the files i can delete the folder.

If the door won't even open especially at boot time before the OS loads, then it is the drive that has the problem and it may not be getting any power.

Is the drive removable? If it is, try removing it and plugging it back in.

Hi everybody,

first of all I'm sorry if this kinda problem have been answered before, I had to post because I did search with lots of keywords but didn't find a satisfying answer. so here I go,

I came to this situation because of my GF cuz 3 days ago she had to re-install windows due to deleted appdata folder( she had deleted it purposely without knowing what is it for , but sad the damage was a high cost)

okay now, she had took it where she had bought her notebook(hp dv7) and she said that they have re-installed windows and MS Office 2010 and charged her like 180$( right now she lives in china and cost was 800yuans and its approximately like 180$).
and they have not given her a installation dvd or office dvd. this thing had happened twice now and now I have made a image so worries but Im concerned about if some scenario occurs that may have to re-install windows then saving this 180$.

here's what I want to know,

1) I dont yet have the windows serial key but soon I will have it. then how to check whether that it is a genuine one or not?
(I use windows ultimate x64 and I have extracted my win key with Magic Jelly Bean KeyFinder and it works well. It gave me my product key which came with my dvd, so Im gonna use it here to find the key)

2) She uses windows home premium x64. so, since we dont have a dvd, can I download a copy of windows home premium from microsoft or from somewhere else and can I aactivate it with this key?

Recently, my computer kept crashing due to memory issues. It caused corruption in a number of things on my computer, namely windows update and parts of my outlook pst file. I was able to fix my pst file with the inbox fixer which ships with outlook, but I am now having problems fixing windows update.

I am running Windows Vista 64-Bit with SP1.

When I try to run windows update:
It launches a window, but quickly disappears.
Also, when it appears on the recent programs list, it has the standard default application icon - not the windows update icon.

When I try to reinstall the Windows Update Agent, I get this error:
"Windows Update Agent Installer encountered unrecoverable error"
I know this is not a malware, spyware, virus, or trojan issue. As this issue started immediately after I had BSOD errors caused by my memory. This is a corruption issue.

I just need instructions on how to manually get to the point where I can run the Windows Update Agent Installer succesfully.

Can anyone assist?

Hi Ideric,

You could try a system restore to a point before the problem.

Seems you may have a number of issues and a Repair install may be the way to go. (Replaces the operating system files , hope fully without affecting your programs and data).

Hope it helps

I just got done reinstalling windows xp cuz i deleted a partition that had a grub boot loader. But thats besides the point. I installed Netscape 7.1 and it wont run. Worked before the reformat.

A:Nescape 6 and 7 wont work after xp reinstall

Are you getting some sort of error message, or quit message? That seems strange. Try uninstalling it completely and re-installing it. Something might have gotten messed up while it was being installed the first time. Also make sure you turn off your AV software.

Recently had to reinstall vista which is on a seperate partition to my programs.

None of my programs will now open, throwing up various errors depending on the program.

The whole point of me installing programs on a seperate partition was so that I wouldnt have to reinstall all my programs if I have to reinstall my OS.

Do I now have to go and reinstall all of my applications?

Thanks in advance.

A:Getting Programs To Work After Vista Reinstall

Unfortunately, when you install a program onto Windows it identifies with the Windows installation through various security features.

Also, when you install a program to a directory, this doesn't mean that that's the only place that parts of the program will be installed. Bits and pieces of the program are installed in your registry and in different directores underneath C:\Windows.

The long and the short of it is that reinstalling Windows means you're going to have to reinstall all of your applications. The only way that I know to keep your apps is by using a disk imaging utility to image the entire hard drive.

Hi all,

I was having "terminal" problems with my computer (pun intended) and found that, after trying almost everything, the only viable fix for me short of reformatting the HD was to reinstall WinXP Pro (SP2). Unfortunately, the computer would not stay up long enough for me to formally save files and settings. I reinstalled and the computer worked again. However, I can no longer access all of my programs that are installed on the HD. I have successfully rebuilt my Desktop, which was easy...I just moved my old Admin/Desktop files over to the new Files and Settings folder. No prob. All programs there work fine now. But my very numerous programs are not listed on the Start tab and when I click on the exact .exe file, it will not open. Eudora is especially bad because it tells me to go to the command line (which I've tried) and that it won't open with an attachment.

I would like the easiest solution to putting my programs back on the Start tab and have them work again (short of reinstalling all of them which would take a couple of weeks IF I can find all the info for them). Should I mess with environment variables? Or is there an easier way?

Thank you all so much in advance for any help you can give.

A:WinXP reinstall -- how do I get all of my programs to work again?

Unlikely it can be done. When you re-installed, you destroyed the registry (normal) where a lot of programs have settings. Without reinstalling the programs, those settings cannot be recreated.

Sorry.

And by the way you are writing, I assume you installed all programs on a separate partition. This is a good thing for data protection, but does not help when it comes to the program itself. I would back up any files you need, including saved data files from programs, then delete them and reinstall them.

Scorp.

Hi,

After a Windows 7 reinstall, my ethernet controllers won't work anymore. Device manager says it's not installed correctly and needs a driver, but I never had to do this before on any other PC's. They're all plug and play ethernet controllers. I already tried removing the device from device manager and restarting, but it gives the same issue. I also looked for drivers but can't find anything. Would be much appreciated if anyone could help me with this issue!

The ethernet controllers I tried:
Netgear XAV2001
Sitecom LN-505
MSI Mega Power 1000HD

Whenever you do a Windows install you should always install the drivers for all the hardware in the computer to either make it work or to improve it performance or add features. Windows does have some basic drivers for some hardware but not all.

FYI, Plug and Play doesn't mean they don't need drivers.

You need to tell us what hardware or what computer you have. When you joined you missed the stop to complete your computer profile/specs. Please do that now using the System Information Utility: http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_Valuable_links

I would like to reinstall Win XP Home on a laptop that is 6 years old and slow. The problem is the DVD/RW drive is spotty and doesn't always work (more time doesnt work than does). So, I found out from something earlier that there maybe a way to have a Virtual CD drive and then I can run an iso. Can you burn a copy of a Windows XP Home CD so that it is an .iso file so that I can reinstall without the CD drive working? or am I way off the mark............ If so, can someone walk me through that, as I don't burn cd's often.... I do have Ashampoo to use though.....

I have a Sony VAIO laptop (VGN--FE880E) that I had upgraded to Windows 8. This was a mistake since it just bogged down with many errors.
I decided to go back to Vista using the manufacturers recovery media.
I pulled the HD from the laptop and formatted it on a PC thinking I would just put it back in the laptop and pop the DVD recovery media back in, start it up and let the DVDs reinstall.
Did that and the laptop wont boot from the CD. Just keeps coming up with "No operating system found". I set it to boot from optical drive first, cleaned the DVD, and everything. It just won't boot from the DVD drive.

The DVD reads fine in other PC.

I have the ability to hook the hard drive to a pc using usb or SATA internal. Is there anything I can do on the PC to make the HD boot in the laptop and bypass the optical drive?

A:Can't get repair disks to work for reinstall

I dont personally own a sony laptop or ever used vista so i cant say for sure but generally on windows 7 your recovery data is held within a recovery partition on the HDD and the disc you have is there to instigate the recovery process pulling info from one (hidden) partition on the HDD and restoring to another (C) partition

Do you have a label on the machine with the windows key on it, if so you should be able to do a clean install and use that key to activate once installed
Have a look at this Clean Install with a Full Version of Vista

The HDD would need to be in the target machine during the install of the OS, loading it in another machine then transferring would not work as it would automatically install drivers for the other machines hardware

I was wondering if anyone has tried this. If I copied the files from the windows 7 install disk and a separate file containing drivers and application installers to an empty partition in my HDD then reinstalled windows to my system partition would my computer recognize the other partition as bootable and give me the option to reinstall windows at post should my system crash.

A:will this work? Bootable reinstall partion??

No. The way to do this is to store a Win7 Backup Image in a primary formatted partition and externally. Then you can reimage the HD from the booted Win7 DVD Repair console in 15 minutes without the need to reinstall.

I recently switched ISPs (going from DSL to Cable), and that's when everything went wrong. In order to get the new network up and running, I needed to use a new router. I setup this network and everything seemed fine (all computers could see and connect to the new network, and even the printer could see, and connect to the new network). For whatever reason, I could not get any of the computers (one laptop running Windows 7, and one running OSX Snow Leopard) to see the printer wirelessly (works fine via USB). It would always say "printer offline."

Uninstalled an re-installed all printer drivers on all machines (printer is an HP Photosmart C7280 all in one).

The printer network diagnostic page came back clean indicating that everything was connected correctly, but when I pinged the IP address of the printer from the windows machine I'd just be bet with a "timed out" message.

This lead me to think it was something to do with the router, so I bought a $30 D-link router and set everything up again. Exact same scenario. Even after setting the network up with no security options (no WEP or WAP security).

This lead me to do a hard reset on the printer. After booting it up again I ran the network setup wizard (via the printer's LCD screen), and tried to connect to the network. This time however, the printer won't connect the the network at all! I printed the wireless network diagnostics page and it fails the "No Filtering" test. ... Read more

I put in netgear wireless llb pcmcia card in my compaq running xp

The driver seems to be OK and the computer recognizes the card

It says wireless network not connectec

when I try to connect or try to view wireless connections
I get message windows can't configure the wireless network

When I tried to follow the instructions on the microsoft site,
and tried to run the program it said to run to let windows zero configure the network It couldn't find the program

What if anything can I do

Unfortunately I can't connect the computer to the internet without the wireless as I'm out of town, typing this in now at a library computer, which right now is my only occasional access to the internet until I get this straightened out.

A:can't get wireless to work on notebook --message windows can't configure wireless

Chances are that when you installed the Netgear driver and utility you told the utility that you wanted it to manage the wireless. Its icon should be in the Notification Area--double click on it, go to the Network (I'm going from memory here) tab, find the network you want and connect to it.

Dear all,

I thought I have met this problem before before my two wireless adapters both stopped working.

PCI-E INTEL 5300
TP-LINK WN821N

My case is a little different from those I found on this forum.

1. When I upgraded my thinkpad x200 to win7 64bit, I don't have "Wireless Network Connection", but I fixed it by stopping one setting of Kaspersky and it came back, so when I first found my PCI-E wireless didn't work, I thought the same thing happened, although I didn't remember the details, I tried the Kaspersky, don't work.

2. I updated the drivers, uninstall-install, start-stop-start WLAN AutoConfig... I have done a lot that can be searched on line, never worked for me.

3. Tragedy happened, I adjusted several common options on BIOS, then after several tries I made to make 5300 work, USB wireless died Don't know how to recover it, and back to my laptop again.

Could anyone here help me out? Really appreciate it! I have spent two days on this stuff, if no one can do this, I guess the only way is to reinstall the OS, that's the least thing I want to do.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mic

PS: Unavailable wireless adapters have all zero Mac addresses, also can't be found in control panel.

A:PCI-E intel 5300 wireless doesn't work. Then the USB wireless adapter

Hi,

Last night, I did a clean format and reinstall of Windows XP on the family desktop in order to get rid of years of accumulated rubbish. The actual reinstall has worked fine but I cannot get the internet going on there and I have no idea what I need to do to fix it. The internet and wireless are both still working - I am able to use both laptops as normal - but the desktop, which is connected via cable rather than wirelessly, can't seem to recognise that it has the router plugged in. It is a G series Belkin and I can't even access the address for setup on there.

Any suggestions? It was working perfectly up until the reinstall.

Thanks!

A:Clean Reinstall of XP and now connected router will not work

I am not sure if you already have done so, but you need to install drivers for the motherboard chipset, network interface, graphics, sound, and others. These can be found on a CD that came with the computer, or manufacturers website.

We can help with that if you supply us with information about your computer manufacturer and model (if prebuilt like Compaq or Acer); or manufacturer and model for the major components like motherboard, graphics, etc.

I want to reinstall windows XP, but first I want to make sure it will work. I have an HP OEM disk because apparently I need an OEM disk and I read any OEM disk would work.
1. I have changed a lot of hardware from the original emachines.

2. I have an HP OEM xp reinstall disk, does it have to be the same year? I have 2002 media center edition installed, the disk is a 2005 MCE.

3. I have the XP key from a keyfinder program, but I do not have the key from the sticker on the case. Will this key work?

Thanks so much for the help, very kind of you folks.

A:XP Reinstall on emachines, new hardware, HP oem disk, will it work?

<<I need an OEM disk and I read any OEM disk would work.>>

Link?

OEM means two different things...when referring to Windows XP:

a. MS released an OEM version of XP, later changed the name to System Builder. This version of XP was sold to persons like me who build their own systems and then install XP and is used by many. If you want more detail, visit the Microsoft site and/or use Google with the string "system builder".

b. The generic, literal meaning of OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer. This term applies to entities like HP, Lenovo, eMachines, etc. who make systems and sell them at the retail level Many of these manufacturers no longer provide a copy of a Windows install disk, instead using recovery or restore-to-factory default mechanisms which may involve disks, may not.

In no way...is a equal to b when it comes to attempting to repair XP or reinstall it.
