Y580 Overheat at 90 degrees

Q: Y580 Overheat at 90 degrees

I'm posting on here after reading many a comment on this issue. My I have the y580 i7 nVidia 660m 8 g ram system and I can't play games in direct 10/11. I can play in direct x 9 for the moment it seems. For the most part when i play Civ 5 in direct 11 it crashes in under 5 mins precisely when the gpu reaches 91 degrees every time. I'm monitoring the temps with MSI afterburner (not overclocking). The temp just climps and then bing... shut down. It use to go higher and run there, but now it seems to shut down there everytime. Crysis 1 shuts down too a few mins in. This machine is very frustrating. Hopefully I can get it to work again. I WILL NEVER BUY ONE OF THESE AGAIN... ever. And I do buy computers often. I will not recommend it to anyone. In fact I will make sure other people buy different machines. I don't want to take the thing apart to reapply thermal paste and thus void the warranty. And I don't want to have it sent away for months on end to have it re-imaged. This is horse**bleep**. I can't wait till PS4 or XBox 720 comes out.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, all, first post here, so bear with me. I've had this Y580 for a few years now, and it's been functioning rather nicely throughout, just with consistently high temperatures. A few days ago, the performance abruptly dropped considerably, and so I checked my temperatures. They were absolutely ridiculous, even for what this thing averages; I was doing around 95 degrees on the GPU, and it was eternally downclocking to 135MHz. I thought it was just a cooling issue at first, and tried everything, but then when playing around in Energy Management, I noticed something really strange. If I hit the dust removal button, the fan wouldn't change in sound at all. In fact, I could barely hear the fan. I opened up the back cover and inspected the fan. While it was running, it was running at a ridiculously low speed, and would not speed up no matter what I was doing. This is a serious issue; have any of you encountered this before? Anyone have good suggestions for how I should go about dealing with this?

Hi ThunderBIrd2678 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Manual cleaning using compressed air can , checking the gears itself if there are strands slowing it down and reapplying thermal paste ensuring contacts are good as initial step.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the energy manager tool from the support site  under power management can help.

Since fan system is still mechanical in nature, as wear and tear may now be affecting its performance, you may decide on replacing it if you have neccessary tools and skills using the manual (page 58) as guide.
Thermal module with fan in item 11 page 78 FRU number as compared the parts look up for the part number .

Hope this helps answering your query.

Hi, so this problem only came in recently but after I try to update windows 10 on my Y580 and tried to power it up the system would not boot. It seems the laptop is running and the keyboard lights are on but the screen itself remains off or black. The first time it has happen I have been able to use the "remove battery" method to where I remove it and re-insert it back in, this has work the first time when I had this issue but when I had to update windows 10 again the issue returned and I have tried the "remove battery" method but to no avail. I was hoping to get some clarity with this issue, thank you.

Hello,

I just installed Speccy, and was horrified to find that my both cores of my 2014 Lenovo ThinkPad are running around 235 degrees! And that's with nothing running except normal boot programs.

I've opened up the bottom to check for dust, but the laptop's still only about a year old, and there was very little dust inside. I've checked my running processes with Process Explorer, and found nothing that looked untoward. What could be causing this extreme temperature?

A:CPU at 235 degrees F

Hi i would try using another program to check your temps as i do not believe it is reading right if it was it would not be running at those temps. try using hwmonitor(cpuid) HWMONITOR | Softwares | CPUID

Hi,

I bought this computer 1 month ago: https://www.pccomponentes.com/pccom-gold-cylon-intel-core-i5-8600k-16gb-240gb-ssd-2tb-gtx-1060-6gb.

Everything works correctly until you open any application or game. At that time, the PC starts to slow down.

I downloaded the HWMonitor and the SpeedFan, both report a CPU temperature between 90 and 100 degrees. It's a little weird...

I have checked that the liquid refrigeration was well connected and that the thermal paste was correctly installed. I have connected the fan to the CPU_FAN and the water pump to the AIO PUMP of my motherboard.

When I access the BIOS, I can see the RMPs of the CPU_FAN, but the AIO PUMP is displayed as N / A.

The voltage setting of the DRAM is 1.2 as indicated by the manufacturer.

I can not think of anything else, will the pump be broken or is the thermal paste problem?

Can anybody help me? I can provide all the necessary reports.

Thank you very much.

Have you contacted the seller? That is the very first thing you do. If you start messing around with the system, you will void your warranty. Unless the seller directs you to do some troubleshooting and or repairs, let the seller handle the problem.

FWIW I am not a fan of water cooling [even though one of my personal systems uses a coolermaster 240 AIO] Unless you are hard core overclocking, there is no need for water cooling; just a leak waiting to happen.

I had to re-image my Y580 as WIndows 7 somehow got corrupted.  One key recovery failed so I spent $60 for recovery media.  That was a painful, time consuming process as it took over an hour to install from the media and then SEVERAL hours installing all the Windows updates as the media installs an ancient version of WIndows 7.  I decided to image the C drive after all the Windows updates were installed so if I ever needed to re-image again it would be a much faster process.  I imaged all 4 partitions to an external drive with Maxium Reflect.  I then decided to try restoring the C drive image to make sure it worked.  Bad idea.  After restoring the image, my Y580 would no longer boot and I had to start all over again with the recovery media.  I suspect the SDD drive setup somehow makes normal image restore an issue. Questions:1.  Has anyone come up with a way to successfully image and restore the C drive?2.  Is there a way to update the OKR partition with new image of Windows 7 with updates installed? Thanks,-Chuck

GPU, after reaching about 75 degrees, freezes showing errors:https://scr.hu/zkZzKJhttps://scr.hu/ZM8dk2This errors occur with games - CS:GO and applications - 3DMark. So far i tried:-downclocking-using different nvidia settings-installing different OS ( WIN 7, 8.1, 10 )-upgrading and downgrading drivers ( i' ve noticed that driver versions below 350 are forcing BSODs Dmp, and versions above 350 are giving errors i mentioned earlier) Is my GPU dying? Or maybe it's motherboard fault?

I have an Ideapad Y580 with a 32 gb SSD and a 1TB HDD. I tried to upgrade to Windows 10 but it failed so I had to do a clean install. I'm trying to go back to Windows 7 since Windows 10 is somewhat glitchy on my computer (I already updated all the drivers). Since it was a clean install, I don't have the "Go Back to Windows 7" option in Windows Recovery. I made a system image just prior to installing Windows 10. I also have a Windows 7 Repair Disc but when I try to boot with it I get a message that says the version is not compatible with the version of Windows I'm trying to repair. Resetting the PC only gives Windows 10 as the target operating system. I tried calling Lenovo support but gave up after 10 minutes on hold and my warranty is expired anyway. Is there any way for me to get back to Windows 7? Or is there a convenient way to get installation media from Lenovo to go back to Windows 7 with the OEM partitions? I was hoping to avoid purchasing the $130 Lenovo "Complex Services" (I'm not even sure if it would solve my problem). Any help is much appreciated Thanks.

Y580, Win10 I just purchased a used Y580 cheap because it has non-functional USB 3.0 ports. The USB 2.0 port works fine. When I plug in a USB cable, it doesn't register anything, as if there's no power to the ports. Which leads me to believe it's not a driver issue...but I could be wrong about that. My thought was that the controller on the motherboard might be bad, but I don't know much about laptops, honestly. I'm more of a desktop guy when it comes to hardware. I'm not even sure if the USB controller is onboard or a separate board in the laptop. Any ideas on how to fix this, or am I just out of luck? Thanks. - Brian

Hello there,I got some issues here with my Lenovo IdeaPad Y580.I was about to give it a new clean installation of Windows 8.1.Finished, it didn't recognize the HDD I installed it on. So I tried to change the boot priority in the BIOS but it seems like I messed up pretty bad. When I start the laptop now it says: "check cable connection! PXE - MOF: exiting intel PXE ROM" It seems like it tries to boot from a server now, as I read in other forums.Excuse my dangerous half knowledge, I am no expert at all.So the bad thing is that my laptop is stuck in that loop, it would restart and the same message appears. I can't enter the BIOS, I tried F1, F2, FN+F2, F12.I read about it in other forums and posts, I took out the HDD and the SSD, pressed B while starting the laptop.I took out the battery pack, held the power button for a minute.I even dissembled the whole laptop to remove the battery of the motherboard, just to figure out it's not possible to remove the battery on that particular motherboard. So yeah, I tried everything I could find online and I don't know what else to do. Maybe try and external keyboard? But the keyboard seems to work, as when I hit fn+f2 the screen goes black, which is the appropriate shortcut. Can anyone of you help me out? I don't know what else to do. I appreciate any help and comments.Thank you!

I started monitoring my hard disk a while back when I was having lots of problems. It was running quite hot and the SMART data showed it was on the edge of failure. I replaced the disk with a new one (Seagate ST2000LM007), and almost immediately it started showing high temperatures as well. Within 30 minutes of power-up doing nothing more than reading email and web browsing, the disk will reach and exceed 50. The fan is working, but seems pretty anemic. I've blown out dust and checked for obstructions, but nothing changed. I really don't want to toast another disk. First off I would like to say that I very much enjoyed my laptop right up until last night. I had the machine since early 2013 and it worked great, best laptop for gaming I have ever used. However I noticed that the last few months the battery cannot hold a charge (for menial tasks) and the fan or gpu was making an odd noise under load. This began to bother me so I took it upon myself to do a battery gauge reset, to see if maybe the battery was just mis calibrated. After this I decided to check the fan and clean out any dust from the vents and inside the fan, as I've noticed it having to work harder than normal under load, and Temps have been higher than normal. I put everything back together, put the motherboard back in, and plugged everything back into the motherboard, but now the laptop won't turn on. What's weird is I have done this a few times before and the laptop has always been fine. This has really bummed me out, I really liked this laptop. Now I don't have a computer to play games on or do anything. I also rely on the laptop for school. I am not sure what to do. I am guessing that the problem lies in the motherboard, and I know the laptop is out of warranty as I have had it awhile. Any idea how much it would cost for a repair like this? I am a poor college student and I don't know that I could even afford a repair let alone a new computer. Why I am frustrated: thing is, about 2 years ago I got a keyboard bezel replacement from Lenovo and sen... Hello, As stated in the title, I have a Lenovo IdeaPad y580. I purchased it approximately three-and-a-half years ago, and only now is it really beginning to chug durings its processes. Point is, I want it to last perhaps another half year or so while I finish saving up for another computer. As a gamer, I'm fine with the limitations of the GPU, but sometimes my laptop legitimately has issues processing stuff, such as loading Google Chrome properly. I know enough about Windows to clean out viral matter and uninstall programs that I don't use that are running in the back. But does anyone have any tips or tricks to make this hunk of junk last maybe six more months before it becomes unusable?TL;DR I need to make my laptop run at least a reasonably sub-average to average level for six more months. Any tips are appreciated.

In my understanding "optimus" turn off the nVidia GPU completely. I have been always plugged I didn't pay a lot attention to this but lately. Tour out that plugged or on battery the GPU is always a 135/405 idle, other ways is a 835/2500 and 950/2500 respectively. Thought was the lenovo energy management (file em8180214.exe) but it doesn't.Is this normal ..???ThanksWindows 10 pro 14393.576nVidia 376.33Intel GPU 10.18.10.4425

Hi,

I own a Y580-M772CMH 15.6FHD/i7-3610QM/8G/ laptop with Windows 7 and a few weeks ago I used Ccleaner to clean the registry. Like the dumb stupid person I am I did not pay attention to what it was "cleaning".

Next time I booted up my Laptop it failed to start Windows and gave the following message:

Check cable connection!
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

So next time I pressed F2 while booting to see:

Boot Device Priority
Internal HDD: SAMSUNG MZMPC064HBDR-000L1
SATA HDD: ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB
SATA ODD: Optiarc BD ROM BC-5550H
Network Boot: Atheros Boot Agent

To me it looked like I still had both disks working so I put in a Windows ISO before boot to see if I could repair. The System Recovery Options screen showed me no known existing OS on the device.

So I powered down and used One Key Recovery which told me when I clicked to restore to factory conditions that the partition layout has changed.

Finally I used a bootable Partition Wizard and that showed me this:

Note the negative used value at disk 1.
To my layman's eyes it seems like the SSD and HDD, that are normally combined by a Lenovo software Raid are now separate. And something I deleted with Ccleaner by accident caused it (probably).

Main thing is, I actually don't know what the problem is and so don't know how to proceed.

I'm afraid my data is lost to me, which isn't a terrible loss, but am I correct in assuming... Read more

Hi, I know there have been numerous threads on this, but each case is slightly different, not to mention that I've tried most of solutions described there and they didn't work. I reinstalled Windows 8 system on my Y580 (using OneKey Recovery). Worked ok after. Then I proceeded to apply all the system updates from Windows Update and some driver updates. After that I restarted the laptop to apply changes and the system stopped booting. The HDD is detected. The boot menu at the beginning only had EFI Network 0 for IPv4 and EFI Network 0 for IPv6 and both failed boot. Later the Windows Boot manager appeared at the top but it also fails each time. After the failed boot it then proceeds to show the OneKey Recovery screen again. When I use it, it works, but after reinstallation it's the same - failed boot and OneKey recovery. When I use a bootable USB installation of Win 8.1 (there's none for Win 8 apparently) and try to repair/reinstall etc. that way, I get a message that the disk where Windows is installed is blocked. Any suggestions?

Hi,i need your help to figure out how to repair my Y580,first of a video of my problem: gif of broken displayIt happens with the start of the laptop and sometimes gets better for a few seconds. The angle of the display doesnt seem to have an influence on the problem. Do I have to replace the whole display or could it be a smaller malfunctioning part? And where can i find a serial number for a proper replacement part? Thanks in advance!

I've noticed my HP Laptop is almost always performing slowly even at simple task. I have a CPU Temp gauge installed called "SpeedFan" and here are the results: Hardrive: 111F. Temp1: 162F. Temp2: 160F. Core 0: 90F. I'm not an expert, but, those temps in the 160s concern me. That's darn hot. I'm certain it's not normal. My laptop is in a very open area, so that's not the problem. And I hear the fan, so that's not a problem. If someone could assist me I'd be much appreciative. Also, my CPU is almost always 100% usage.

Thank you.

Hi all, I've got what could be a bit of a problem.

Basically I checked my CPU temperature using the BIOS system health section and I noticed my CPU was at 75 degrees C, which obviously got me a little worried, and it continued to increase whilst I was in the BIOS and got up to a little over 80 degrees C before I shut down the system for the night.

Bear in mind the system temperature was at 40 degrees C and only increased by a degree during the time I spent in the BIOS.

I was wondering if this is normal or if I should buy a new cooling system for my CPU?

Specs are as follows:

Motherboard: Foxconn 945gz 7mc ks2h.
CPU: Intel Pentium Dual Core E2140 1.6Ghz.
I'm running a 550v power supply as well if that has any impact.

Cheers.

A:CPU hitting 80 Degrees C?

I would check to verify the CPU cooling fan is turning, and that the heatsink is properly attached (sometimes the plastic clips on the motherboard break off). If those are both good you could try reapplying thermal paste.

I don't think your power supply would have anything to do with this.

Hello again. My computer keeps restarting on any windows- xp, vista, 7 X32 and X64 bit versions.

I have bought new thermal paste but it still is running hot! no change.

It hangs around 40~ alone in bios. i have reseated and it its tight that the motherboard kinda bends.

PLEASE HELP.

EDIT: Now in bios runs at ~45 degrees. Fan rpm is over 2000 and case is 31 degrees. OTHER CPU's have been running at 28 degrees

A:Pc restarting= cpu ~40 degrees

Hi nostaw5,

Perhaps you should check out the processor with Intel's processor diagnostic utility at: Processors — What is the Intel? Processor Diagnostic Tool?.

Are you absolutely certain this processor is compatibile with the rest of your system (motherboard, BIOS, chipsets, Vista 64-bit,...)? I'm unable to verify this one way or the other.

Good luck!

Hi. I've been lately noticing outrageous temperatures on my CPU. When in idle, it rarely drops below 80 degrees, and when playing/browsing/basically multitasking and the CPU usage goes over 50%, it peaks to 105, 106, 107 degrees. I know I should be worried, and I am. What can I do? Dust the fans off? Other solutions?

A:CPU Temp over 80 degrees C

dust off the fan, check that airflow isnt restricted, and that any vents/panels arent obscured.

It could be that the TIM on the heat sink was poorly applied and or of poor grade. it might be worth buying some new thermal paste and reapplying it, but it would also be worth investing in an aftermarket cooler while your at it.

But if this is a laptop(as it isnt stated) then similar measures need to be done, but its far greater work. plus not all laptops use TIM, ive worked on a few that use other methods but meh.. i wont go into that

Ok firstly Hi to all as I've just joined.

Side case fan
MSI 865PE Mobo
512mb mem
256mb radeon 9600
Creative 5.1 sound
TV card

Well I've been using Corecenter to monitor CPU temp etc and have had regular shutdowns after a bios update, now at 88 degrees you would think that things would have gone belly up by now........jet 4 fan on order by the way .............but this is what I've found.

I have a digital temp LED built into the case with a flat probe that sits between the CPU and heatsink (embedded in the heat transfer pad) now at the time Corecenter reported 88 degrees the case LED read 63, granted still hot but with the TV card running/defrag running and playing a game the temp seemed acceptable, Bios read 67 degree by the way.
Unhappy with this I got hold of an accurate temp probe which I tested under my tongue first, and with the CPU under load I got a reading of no more than 43 degrees on the heatsink, 29 Degrees on the airflow from the side fan with the case temp at 63.......more like it perhaps.

So if the reading from the Bios and Corecenter are incorrect then I have no worries, set the temp alarm on Corecenter to 100 degrees and away we go.

QUESTION:
Does the CPU take a reading from the Bios tell itself its getting hot and then throttle back if so I'm never going to get this Prescot to run flat out ........or does it know its not hot and carry on working regardless?? Comments?

what is so hot?

A:Yikes, 119 degrees C

That temp is linked to your power supply, but it's bugged for a lot of systems, so it might not actually be that temperature.

Especially when all of your over temps are fine.
