Solved: Explore.exe freezes

Q: Solved: Explore.exe freezes

Hello this is my first post on this forum. My problem is when I boot up my computer explore.exe freezes. The desktop, Taskbar, and icons will not respond. I have to open up Task Manager and end explore in the process list and launch it back up to continue using my computer. I have Trend Micro Internet Security, Malwarebytes, and SuperAntiSpyware. Ive run scans multiple times using the programs and they find nothing. I also defragment my computer regularly. I recently downloaded Hijack this but I don't really know what do with it. Here are my computer specs. Manufacturer: Dell Inc. Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz Memory: 2046MB RAM Hard Drive: 495 GB Video Card: (2) NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Monitor: SyncMaster 226BW(Digital) Sound Card: SB X-Fi Audio [CCE0] Speakers/Headphones: Logitech 5.1 Keyboard: Dell USB Keyboard Mouse: Logitech G5 USB Laser Mouse Operating System: Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3

Preferred Solution: Solved: Explore.exe freezes

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am running MS Win XP SP2 on a Dell GX745 Intel Core 2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40 GHz with 2 GB ram.

Starting this afternoon I have had a problem that when I right click on the start button, or on a file in a folder, explorer.exe hangs. I can end process on it, then run explorer.exe and it comes back and works fine. Except for the right clicking. This has also started affecting Outlook as I can not right click on a email and print.

I have tried restoring to a previous point twice, first time yesterday, 2nd time Monday. I have ran IOBit Advanced Windows Care as well as CCcleaner. Spy sweeper did not find anything, and neither did AVG free.

Someone please help as this is driving me bonkers!

A:right click freezes explore.exe and outlook.exe

Hi tdawgnok and welcome to TSF !

That could happen if there's a problem with one of the programs that's integrated in the shell (meaning a corresponding action appears in the right-click menu).

Do you remember installing anything new before the problem started ?

Go to start => run and type eventvwr.msc. See if there are errors happening when explorer.exe crashes in the application or system subsections. Double-click the error, click on the third button on the right (this copies the information in the memory) then right-click => paste it here. See if the error messages mention a given driver, dll or .exe file (other that explorer.exe).

Repeatedly press F8 at startup and choose safe mode in the menu that will appear. See if the problem also happens there. If it doesn't happen in safe mode then restart in normal mode. Go to start => run and type msconfig. The program that manages the right-click item that causes explorer to crash should be listed under the startup tab. Use BleepingComputer's startup item database to know what each item does and try unticking the ones related to programs you don't need or installed recently.

You can also use Autoruns by Sysinternals. Go to the explorer tab and look at the items listed under HKLM\...\ContextMenuHandlers

Alternatively you can use Nirsoft's ShellMenuView to manage the right-click context menu :

how do I get rid of the "public pictures", "bodies", and "downloads" tabs which are all empty? Some time ago it used to just be My Pictures and that's all I want.

A:[SOLVED] explore

Hello Alphalax

You can hide the 'Pictures' folder from the Navigation Pane by:
> opening up a window
> clicking on that 'Libraries' folder in the pane
> right clicking on the 'Pictures' folder and select Properties

In the properties window, unselected the checkbox that says 'Show in navigation pane'.

For the ones in your 'Favourites', you can just right click and select the delete option, for those.

This has been a problem for the last week. When I place my curser over the start button at the lower left of my computer screen, and right click to explore my directory, I run into problems.

It opens up but freezes. I cannot navigate between folders. Eventually, I get a windows explored error message that ask if I would like to report the fault or not. I always do. But never get anything back.

Now, I can not leave. I have to press control, alt, Delete to end the program. It takes a bit of doing, but eventually, it will close. But, if there is an internet page up, it will close that to.

Then I cannot get rid of the task manager.

I have windows XP.

Any suggestions anyone?

I have been having problems with Internet Explorer for a few months now, since I got my new PC. (Dell dimension E520, operating with XP professional, McAfee security).

On some occasions and on some specific web sites IE hangs, shows on top bar (Not responding) and I have to shut it down. Same does not occur with Mozila Firefox enquiry on the same web site, so it must have something to do with IE. My daughter next room has a similar PC, same system and security set up, and does not get the same error on same web sites. So I do not think that it is McAfee set up, unless something changed since installation on delivery.

Checking on Error log, on my first encounter with this problem on a given day I get the following:

Crypt32 Failed auto update retrieval of third-party root list sequence number from: with error: This operation returned because the timeout period expired.

Crypt32 Failed auto update retrieval of third-party root list sequence number from: with error: The specified server cannot perform the requested operation. (12 entries one after the other)

Applicatio n Hang Fault bucket 625112620

My level of computer literacy is quite low, and I do not understand what all that means.

Any suggestion on how to fix the problem would be appreciated. I still prefer IE from Mozila!

When I click on my favorites menu in internet explorer it opens up a explorer window instead of going to the web site. Then I have to click on the short cut again in this new window in order for the short cut to work.
At that point my computer opens another internet explorer window, so each time I use the fav menu I get another open explorer window and then another open internet explorer window so this adds up to lots of open windows and I am always closing these unecessary windows.
It just started doing this after the computer was in storage for a while. Anyone know how to fix this problem?

Whenever I start Internet explorer for the first time after logging on, I get a full screen pop up of an undesired Internet browser that consist of multiple list of categories. This thing takes a long time to load and can’t be killed until it is finished loading unless you go to task manager to end it. If that is done, any open Internet explore sessions close with it. It doesn’t happen again until I log off and on or reboot. It is associated with the file iexplore.exe. Anyone know what this is and how to get rid of it without messing anything else up?

I am running windows XP home edition SP 2, accessing internet via Road Runner. I upgraded Internet Explorer. It froze so I killed it and restarted again. It finished properly the second time, or so it seemed.

IE7 ran OK the first time. The 2ns time it froze on a blank window. No toolbars, no status bar, no nothing, just the frame and blank inside.

Other symptoms: Internet Options opens up OK from the control panel, and every tab seems OK, but when I go connections, LAN settings, the button shows depressed, and the thing freezes.

I can access the WWW without a problem via Firefox. Outlook sends and receives email without a hitch. But any program that checks internet options to see about proxy settings or similar, freezes. Example Intellicast and the Zinio reader. Example the setup program for Max Registry Cleaner and Registry Mechanic.

I ran a virus scan with AVG. The machine was clean. I cleaned up the registry with RegistryFix. There were a lot of lose ends, now it is clean. I ran AVG Anti Spyware. It has a residue of 45 tracking cookies, nothing else. I uninstalled Intellicast and the Zinio reader. Nothing made a difference.

Hi everyone!

This is my first time to post in this forum. I searched the net for answers regarding my problem as states in my title above yet I can't find any definitive answers.

Here's what happened: I was transferring files from my sister's netbook (Win XP) to my laptop (Windows 7) using my USB flash drive. After I inserted the USB in one of the laptop's USB ports, my antivirus program initially detected that something's wrong with the USB drive; it said that it had a virus (autorun.inf and Recycler). As far as I am concerned, I turned off all autoplay notifications for any USB drives inserted to my laptop. After cleaning the USB drive of the autorun.inf and Recycler problems, I tried to open the USB drive usiing:

Right Click -> Explore

However, to my great surprise, the "Explore" option was missing and the only options left for opening my USB drive were these:

Open Autoplay...

Initially, my reaction was to load my antivirus program (ESET NOD32) and scan the USB drive, thinking that the USB drive had a virus infection of some sort. The scan didn't detect any virus or malware. So I tried using another USB drive to check if the same options will appear. And appear they did without the "Explore" option! I also tried inserting a DVD where I hid all my files; the same options stated above appeared without the "Explore" option.

So what I did was to scan my whole computer to see if there&... Read more

I have just noticed a new addition of "New folder" when I right click in Explore. It is the very top item. If I click on it, a new folder appears with a name already filled in - the names are random - like loon, dog, etc.

The "New" <Folder> is still there and works properly.

I ran Adaware, Spybot, Norton Anti-virus, Windows Anitispyware. I ran Adaware first and it found eight entries which I deleted. After that, the other programs found nothing.

Any idea how I can remove this entry from the menu?

I'm thinking my home computer is infected w/ something rather unseemly.
I'm running XP Home on my Gateway, w/ Internet Explorer 6. At first my desktop was replaced with a black screen containing a warning message about spyware, and a link to do something about it (I could still see all of my icons, but could not run anything). I tried using the task manager to get rid of it, but was unsuccessful. Then I downloaded and ran Spybot Search and Destroy, which captured a good bit and returned my desktop to normal. However, whenever I attempt to open anything on the desktop other than an application (Word, Excel, etc), I get an error message saying "Windows Explorer has experienced an error and is now shutting down . . ." I was at first still able to reach the internet, although my homepage and settings were all gone, but now I am getting the same error message for Internet Explorer as well.
Any ideas?

From the task manager window, I stopped a running process called i.explore.exe that was slowing the computer by consuming a lot of the cpu usage (more than 50%), then everthing went ok after that. My question is: What is that i.explore.exe I dared to delete in a desperate attempt to get my pc running fast again?

i.explore.exe is quite probably a trojan of some description.

Go and read this thread HERE and post a HJT log as an attachment into this thread.

I forgot, but how do you resize the icons in explore. Right now they are overlapping ?
OS XP Professional SP3.

A:Windows Explore

What do you mean by resize? If you want to prevent them from overlapping you can activate "snap to grid"

1. Right-click on your Desktop. 2. Select, from at or near the top of the menu Arrange Icons By.
3. There will be one option called Align to Grid with/without a check mark next to it.
4. If there is a check mark next to it you will disablethe feature, and if there isn’t one you will enable it.
If you actually have so many icons that they can't fit you can indeed decrease their size, bearing in mind that this might ruin the look of some icons which were designed for a 32x32 square.

1. Right Click on the Desktop and Choose Properties
2. In the Properties Window click on the Appearance Tab at the top.
3. In the Appearance Window click on the button called Advanced.
4. In the Advanced Appearance Window choose Item: from the drop down list and choose Icon and you can choose desired Icon size.

By default many users will see 32 x 32 pixels but this can be changed to whatever you want.
In my opinion the best option is to reorganize things a bit so that you don't have all that clutter on your desktop, but that is a matter of preference. I personally keep projects I'm currently working on on my desktop and nothing else. Shortcuts to a dozen or so programs you use regularly can be useful, but you don't want too many. My point is either use the inbuilt organization structure or define your own, but keeping the system organized is ... Read more

I have used Netzero for over a year. 8 months ago a problem started, I could not access my account. I got a message; "Windows cannot find 'i explore.exe' ". After a great deal of attempts by "tech" support staff, I had to re install my XP disk.

Last month, the same thing started again. Although I could not get to my Net zero, I was able to download the free juno service and use it. That puzzled me sinc it is the same company as Net zero. I am now using a free service, "Metconnect", I am able to access Metconnect then click on the ie browser icon and go to the MSN home page. But, when I try to go to the Metconnect home page, I get the "Windows cannot find i explore.exe."

I would like to find a resolution beside the re installing of XP. I thank you in advance for any assistance.

Have you ran a full anti-virus scan? If you don't have one, go HERE and run one.

This program has caused some serious problems on my computer. It runs itself using some hidden program and it only shows up in my Window's task manager in processes. However, everytime that I try to end the process, it ends my desktop too. I'm pretty sure that it has something to do with some spyware, but I can't find it in my computer. I recently deleted some sypware from "internet axis" and some other bogus company, but i think that it's still messing with my computer. It causes the program to take up 99% of my CPU sometimes, and makes other programs REALLY slow or freeze up. It also sometimes prevents me from getting on Internet Explorer because it some how sets up a firewall. Now recently it's changed my desktop apperance (I can only use this "modified theme" and no changes ever take effect to change it back to normal) and all these icons for casino's and porn keep showing up, it's pretty bogus I've tried system restore several times, but it won't resotre my system anymore, it says that there was an error and that I should choose a different date, except no date works! I was hoping there was someone out there who had a clue about what I should do. Thanks a ton!

My CPU usage is at 100 %. My of the usage is for something called Iexplore . What is this program ?

Can I shut it off ?

I would appreciate any help.

A:Cpu Usage And I Explore

Iexplore can be innocent, or it can be malicious. Can I shut it off ?Yes. If you open the tesk manager (ctrl+alt+del) and click on the processes tab, you can highlight Iexplore and click on End Process. However this will not cure your ills.I urge you to immediately get this checked out by our team in the High Jack This! forum here at Bleeping Computer, because you may be infected with a virus or a worm, and it may spread to others in your address books. Here is my HJT referal canned speach:For help with removing your infection I would like to refer you to the Highjack This (HJT) forum here at BleepingComputer.com: First: Read the Preparation Guide found HERE. I am using Win2000 SP4

Recently I have been having a few little problems with windows explorer and Internet Explorer. If I go to My Computer, the window will come up, but the little flashlight will show and it will never see my drives or control panel. Even if I right-click on start and go to explore, it will only show my files, but no drives. The drive shows up in the device manager and says it's working properly.

Also, in IE, if I click the dropdown arrow on the address bar, the hourglass comes up but it will never show the drop down list.

Any advice would be helpful. I was thinking of reformatting and reinstalling windows, but I would like to avoid that right now.

Thanks for any advice!

I have a sony Vaio laptop with xp media center 2005. Its a friends, so information is limited. What I do know is explorer.exe will not load when signing into windows. The only way to get around is by launching task mgr and stating new, iexplore.exe.
I have tried to load explore.exe, but I get an error message that states, can not find. I browse to the windows folder and find it there, but it will not launch there either.

I was able to manually install Norton 2009 and it did remove some viruses, trojens and backdoors.

They are as follows:

Backdoor and trojan.dropper was listed twice, but norton found it twice and removed it twice. At least so it states.
