Virus Suspected : Cannot enable "On Resume, Show Welcome Screen Feature" for s. saver

Q: Virus Suspected : Cannot enable "On Resume, Show Welcome Screen Feature" for s. saver

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and up until today Ive managed to fix most of my windows problems, but this one has me at my wits end. About a week ago, right after I installed a new DVD Burner and Nero 6 my computer (Windows XP) stopped showing the welcome screen when resuming from screen saver. It will still show the screen when resuming from standby mode, but I want to make sure the screen saver feature is not indicative of something worse. Whats more troubling is that I can go to the registry and set all the right keys and it still wont work. I am setting ScreenSaverIsSecure to 1 and NoAutoReturnToWelcome to 0. After doing this, the window shows the "On Resume...." checkbox is checked but the function is greyed out. Fast-user switching is turned on.

Here is an HJT Log of my system. Any Suggestions

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Why does it ask to "Show Images" in Yahoo mail app? I accidentally clicked on "show images" on what looks like a phishing email. I didn't click on the hyperlink, but I clicked the "show images" button. Am I infected with viruses now?? LOL

What is the purpose of "show images"? I've heard opening a PDF can execute programs, but can viewing images inserted into the body of an email have any negative effect on the security of your device? If not, what is the purpose of this feature? Thanks!

I am developing a WinRT app. One of the requirements is that the app should have a "timed logout" feature. What this means is that on any screen, if the app has been idle for 10 mins, the app should logout and navigate back to the home screen.

By using this link and applied the logic given in below link

http://stackoverflow.com/a/18878954/3560390

Its works fine in all screens except webview, because webview not supports any touch event or tap event.

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/windows.ui.xaml.controls.webview.aspx

How to enable "timed logout" feature in WinRT webview ?

Any help is welcome..

While starting the computer for another day of chasing an unrelated problem I see the following screen :

" Windows Resume Loader

The last attempt to resume the system from its previous location failed. Attempt
to resume again ?
(Use arrow keys to highlight your choice.)

Continue with system resume
Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu
ENTER=Choose "
The second problem - aside from the sudden appearance of the "Loader" screen itself - is that the computer is totally unresponsive to any input. All connections appear to be tight and neither keyboard, mouse nor restart make any change at all.

The machine is a Dell Optiplex GX620 desktop running Win7(32 bit), IE9 and Norton Internet Security.

I have exhausted my meager troubleshooting abilities and am hoping someone can provide some guidance.

If this is posted in the wrong forum please feel free to move it.

Thanks in advance for your time.

A bit of an annoying problem here. For some reason, the "On Resume Display Logon Screen" screen saver function has stopped working. It used to work, but for some reason it has stopped working. When I step away from my computer, I want to "protect" it by requiring a password logon upon stopping of the screen saver. But even though I have this checkbox checked, IT DOESN'T WORK! I have scoured the web for a solution to this problem to no avail. I have gone into the Registry to the key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop to ensure that the ScreenSaverIsSecure key is set to a value of 1. Nothing works! When I jiggle the mouse on any screen saver it DOES NOT PROMPT ME FOR MY PASSWORD, but rather opens my computer right up. Does anyone have a clue as to how to fix this??? Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Thanks for any and all advice!

Is there any way to load the "Screen Saver Settings" dialog/ control panel at boot-up/ login in a similar fashion to applications?

If not, then would I need to write a software program of some type via OS-specific commands (I presume) for opening this dialog to be executed at boot-up/ login e.g., VB, C, or C++?

Thanks for your replies! :-)

a friend told me how to set up my screensaver so that it scrolls thru all my pictures in "my pictures" folder. I've done so, but there's quite a delay between pictures, it doesn't seem like it's showing pictures from the whole folder, sometimes the pictures are very small off to one corner, and in-between pictures the screen is blank for a bit and usually has a symbol on it such as a musical note, "exit", a figure running, etc. My friend seems to have hers set up the same way, but it doesn't have these problems. It just scrolls thru her pictures, one after the other, with the pictures taking up the whole screen.

When I am on the computer and interrupted, I leave the computer to do something, and the screen saver should kick in properly.

The screen saver isn't the problem. One time when I had left the computer, I was gone for 20 minutes. I set the screen saver to activate after 5 minutes of no movement at the desktop. And after 8-10 minutes after the screen saver is activated, the screen turns pitch black. This has always been normal for my computer, I just move the mouse and the desktop comes back. However, the other day when I was gone for 20 minutes I came back and moved the mouse, only to discover that the screen that emerged from the screen saver was a single white box in the middle of the monitor screen saying "no signal." I have seen this before: I see this screen when the monitor is on but the PC tower is not. This means that the monitor is getting no feed from the PC tower.

So when I move the mouse and I get the no signal message, I hit ctrl+alt+delete to see if anything happens. Nada. I turn the monitor off then back on, and the same message still apperars. Not only that, but as anyone knows, when you ctrl+alt+delete twice, the system restarts. Not at this message. So why is it doing this? What is the source of my problem? Monitor? Video card?

Oh and by the way when I hit the reset button right on the tower is the only way I can actually reboot the system, but everything turns back to normal, I am just wondering how I can prevent this weird problem when I ... Read more

Hi, I just downloaded what I thought was a free zip software. However, when I downloaded it it was a very quick download. When I ran it, the window that popped up was more like a little html window (or small browser even) than an application. It had a bunch of softwares for sale in the window. At the bottom, there was a little window that says "Click here to download free zip software". When I did, a small window opened up, some text appeared, and then it automatically closed. Now my computer is slow. There's no zip software to be found anywhere in my programs list nor on my desktop! I am running Avira to see if it does anything. The other frustrating thing is that there is no program that was installed, so I can't even uninstall whatever was just put on my machine. Help.

It may be a group policy that's preventing you from setting a screensaver. Ensure that you're logged on as an administrator and type "gpedit.msc" (without the quotation marks) into the RUN box to open the Group Policy editor.

In the left pane, expand the User Configuration node, then Administrative Templates, then Control Panel.
Click Display.
In the right pane, double click Screensaver.
If "Disabled" is selected, this is your problem.
Select "Enabled" instead, click OK, then click the X in the right top corner to close the Group Policy Editor.

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

A:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/s...s-not-working/

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Have a nice day,

Fitch.

The hard drive is a Western Digital 320 GB that I've had plugged into this computer before (and worked). Then i got a virus and had to do a recovery of windows.

Ever since then I can't get windows to recognize/show it in my computer. I just "disabled" and "enabled" it in device manager to no effect. I have a C, D, and E drive which are: two partitions on the hard drive, and then the CD drive (respectively).

So i'm stuck, not sure where to proceed since it's obviously not the hard drive itself, I use it on my xbox all the time. What next?

Hi,

I recently discovered my computer has been infected by this virus. I looked through some of the threads already posted on this issue, but I am not incredibly savy with logs and registry keys so I was hoping someone could help me do this step by step to make sure I can remove this correctly and without wrecking my computer (further).

I have McAfee Antivirus, Windows 7 64-bit. I know that chrome and firefox are infected, haven't checked IE.

I assume its from a v-share plugin because I stream a lot of online sports.

Thank you so much in advance,

Rob

If you press ctrl+alt+del you have options like "lock this computer", "log off", "show task manager" etc in the middle of the screen.
I would like to have the option "restart", too. i know, that i can get this option at this screen at the power-button but in our systems i have to disable the power-button to prevent that someone presses shut down. restart shoul be still available so i need a way to enable it in the described way.

i don?t want to have "restart" at any other way cause windows is completely closed for our users. they can only use the startet programs in full screen mode. they have no permissions to use the start-button or to see the desktop. only ctrl+alt+del is available to log out. therefore i need this "extraordinary" solution.

anyone has a hint?

the system is windows 7 prof 64bit.

I right clicked on the Taskbar and checked Quick Launch and hit the Apply button. This put the Quick Launch toolbar on the Taskbar with the Show Desktop and Internet Explorer icons. I deleted them and now I can't duplicate this action. I can get the Internet Explorer icon back. But I can't get the Show Desktop icon back.

Does anyone know how to get the Show Desktop icon back on the Quick Launch toolbar.

Thanks,

Hey everyone,
I am trying to get the REST queries to work with the sharepoint end points instead of graph end points. I first created an app with relevant permissions and have given it the admin consent. Then I am hitting the https://login.microsoftonline.com/<tenant>.onmicrosoft.com/oauth2/token?Content-Type=application/x-www-form-urlencoded end
point with https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com as resource. I am then using the access token retrieved to give the rest call to https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com/_api/v2.0/drives/b!3indYSbqZ0-hVSPnCgIZy-2xDMh7jH9AuQnEzJMc6TEfQoSJvJT-R6tT0lFBQiPr/root/delta
but it is failing with "error":{"code":"generalException","message":"General exception while processing"}}. The REST response code is 401 Unauthorized. I have filed a Microsoft support ticket but they
have asked me to post on these forms. Can someone please help me with this? I am not able to move forward because the error is pretty generic and doesn't give any additional details.

I upgraded to the CP a few days ago and just noticed a huge problem. The "Show Desktop" tile that is normally on the start screen be default has gone missing. I can't figure out how I got rid of it in the first place, but is there some way to add it back?

EDIT: I have changed the title to more accurately reflect the problem. A bunch of the features that come with Windows 8 CP (the tablet friendly Settings page, Remote Desktop, the show desktop tile, The Windows Store, etc) all vanished shortly after I installed Windows 8. I tried reinstalling and the same thing happened again. If anyone else is having this issue, let me know.

A:Can't find "show desktop" tile on Metro start screen

Go to the start screen and just type Desktop. The first screen shown below should appear with the Desktop listed. Right click on the desktop icon and re-pin it to your start screen using the option at the bottom of the screen. Below it shows only 'unpin' as I have not deleted the desktop icon from my own Start page.

When I open some documents then always a warning popup appears in Word 2007:

"Word hyphenation feature is not available. RUn the MS Office Setup program..."

How can I permanently and forever disable this popup (without saving the document and without re-install some other parts of MS Office)?

Peter

A:Disable forever ""Word hyphenation feature is not avai"

In Add/Remove programs, select Microsoft Office 2007, then select CHANGE, select Advanced, select and expand Office Shared Features, select and expand Proofing Tools, select and expand English Proofing Tools (if you use English), then click on the little arrow at the side of Hyphenation and choose Run from My computer.
Click Continue.

Setup will then install the missing component. You may need your Office 2007 CD for this.

What I found under Windows 7, when you use the "Show Desktop" feature (I prefer the ? Win + D shortcut) and then bring all windows back by using it again, some windows behave as if they're glued to the front of the z-order. What this means is, say, I have windows
A B and C open, with focus on A, hit ? Win +D twice, and now it may happen that if I then want to switch to B or C, either by Alt+Tab or by selecting them on the taskbar, the taskbar shows the highlight, but A stays visible (and usable, it's not just a rendering
issue) in the foreground.

Imagine the following situations, all three windows cascading and overlapping:

A (focus)
B
C

-> ? Win + D

Desktop (focus)

-> ? Win + D

A (focus)
B
C

-> click C on taskbar

A
C (focus)
B

-> click B on taskbar

A
B (focus)
C

And so on. Focus means actual input focus, i.e. in second situation, any keyboard typing is sent to window B while window A is in the foreground.

It does not matter what kind of application; in my current case an instance of Outlook and an instance of Explorer is stuck, while a second instance of Explorer and an instance of Firefox behave normally. This should show that this problem can occur even between
multiple instances of the same application, and that there are no fancy applications involved that like to pretend they are the most important program and internally force "always on top".

I am supposing you are attempting to use Volume Activation License such as KMS key, as I know f you don't have access to a KMS Server, this option won't work for these machines. I?d suggest call the Microsoft Volume License Service Center and explain your

I need a tweak or registry edit to make it do "Win + M" Minimize all Windows, instead of "Win + D" show desktop.

Reason is it hides my gadgets and docks, while Win + M keep those on the desktop and just minimizes the windows.

any help would be really appreciated.

I recently installed a clean installation of windows 8.1 x64 on my aging laptop, but for whatever reason the system fails to "fast start" or resume from hibernation as it will reach the window's boot logo with the spiraling dots albeit spiraling "very slowly" with the cpu fan spooling up audibly in the back ground, HDD activity light stays lit although little or no audible activity is presented. I can only get around this by doing a hard restart via forcing a shut down by holding the power button. Then it would proceed to boot normally.

The Event viewer shows nothing out of the ordinary.

Disabling hibernation function via cmd "powercfg -h off" does seem to remedy this but this is more of inconvenience and hassle for me since I'm on a laptop with somewhat less than stellar performance as it does not do much more beyond watching HD videos online and offline. I find these boot time saving features and hibernation rather paramount for this laptop's continued usage.

My system spec is as follows:

Acer Aspire 3100 with "Nevarro" mainboard
ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 with up to either configurable BIOS option of up to 32, 64, 128, 256 Megabytes of Shared Memory.
2GB DDR2 RAM
Turion 64 X2 TL-60 2.00Ghz Dual Core

A:Windows 8.1 fail to resume from hibernate or "fast start".

This may help (?)
Some older Dell models had this problem. No remedy seemed to be available. Only recently, Dell have come up with a solution. There is now a Bios update for the particular model (Latitude E6510). After applying the update, the bios has to be set back to factory default, rebooted and set up again to your own requirements. This worked for me, with that particualr model.

In your case, forget the update for the moment. Try the Bios factory reset and setup only.

The System Fix Virus & Privacy Protection Virus hijacked and infected my system: WinXP (64-bit). They've caused my default web browser to change frequently (each time I reboot my PC). So I've been having trouble getting rid of all of this malware/viruses from my system, since I use Windows XP x64.

ComboFix.exe and TDSSKiller.exe are not compatible with my Windows XP 64-bit system. So how do I get rid of the malware/viruses from this computer without those apps that were made to get rid of the following problems on other Windows OS's?:

The latest version(s) of ComboFix and TDSSKiller don't work on the 64-bit version of Windows XP, but they are compatible with other versions of Windows: 98, XP, VISTA, 2000, 2003, 2008 and Windows 7!

2. Privacy Protection Virus (behaves almost exactly like the aforementioned virus)
3. Google-Redirect Malware (redirects all my searches to this site: 63.209.69.107)

Thanks in advance to ANY users for helping me and others with this malware/virus problem: I understand and read the previous pinned-thread about the revelant malware/virus issue that Windows-users solved with the programs I've been unable to install on my system. The aforementioned malware/viruses began to infect my PC on December 14, 2011 (since that day, I haven't found a single anti-virus program that can detect the Google-redirect malware/virus on my system).

I have multiple users on one machine.

I have a script running that resets the power configuration to "always on" in the registry, but it does not overwrite the standy and hard disk settings under power management. If they are set to 15 minutes, it stays at 15 minutes even if the cofiguration is changed from Home to Always on.

Also I cannot have the password on resume unchecked by default for all users. It has to be manually done. I ahave triied registry and GPEdit settings for all of these but no joy.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Slarti

A:Removing "prompt for Password on Resume" Globally

Make all the settings you need to make on one user. Then copy that users profile to the Default user profile. The only problem is that you will have to also delete everyones profile that already exists on the computer so that when they login again, they will get the new profile. This is how we solved the issue on our network.

When I resume from hibernate in Windows 7, my monitor says "Video Mode Not Supported". If I power cycle the monitor, everything works fine from then on until I hibernate again. If I turn my monitor off, resume the computer from hibernate and wait until it is at the login screen then turn my monitor on, I have no problems. Resuming from sleep or from a cold boot does not cause this problem to occur, which is why I think it is not a problem with my monitor. Any suggestions for how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Sorry everyone. I just realized that I have been trying to post a file from minidump folder, but I have my OS set up to use full kernel dumps instead. I changed that so I will post my correct minidump as soon as I have another BSOD, which shouldn't be long, unfortunately.
(end Edit)

Hi Everyone,

Sorry if I missed a post, but I didn't see any threads that addressed my issue with my errors. I use "Sleep" then when I resume Windows 7 Ultimate x64 I get a BSOD 90% of the time.

I had switched the page file to a second drive (1tb Samsung F3 7200rpm) which is my data drive, in order to improve performance. The OS is on a WD Black 640GB. The error was a Kernel_DATA_inpage issue of some kind, so I switched my page file back to the OS drive. Now I get the error that is (hopefully) described in the minidump I have attached.

I did read the sticky about sleep errors, but I don't think I have had any of those specific error codes. I am new to interpreting Windows error reports, so any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: I meant to attach my .dmp file, but apparently I can't do that directly. Would someone kindly explain to me how I can open my .dmp file or attach it as a zip as I have seen others do? For the moment I merely changed the .dmp file extension to .zip and attached the file. I hope that works. Here is the information I can copy and paste.Problem signature:

Hello
I have been experiencing some problems with my computer recently. Firstly, my virus scanner (AVG) keeps on finding a virus called 'not-a-virus:RemoteAdmin.Win32.WinVNC-based.f' and some trojans called 'Trojan.JavaClass'. I have also been getting random pop-ups whenever I have been browsing the internet, and my computer seems to be running very sluggish, especially at startup.

I also believe that, last week, someone gained remote access to my computer, as all of a sudden, my mouse wouldn't move properly and the computer became really slow. This only stopped when I engaged the internet lock on my Zonealarm firewall.

Today, I was asked by Zonealarm to give a program called spoolsv.exe "access to privileged rights" which I have never seen before for this program. When I looked at the properties of spoolsv.exe, it said that it was created in 2006 but modified in 2005 (???), and so therefore didn't allow the program access. (I don't know if that has anything to do with the problems that I am having but thought I would mention it)

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I'm trying to fix my brother's computer after he opened a trojan attached to an email. The email was the one saying your credit card had been charged for airline tickets.

The computer is a Dell Dimension 3100 running Windows XP SP2.

The first problem is that after normal login there is a blue screen with a yellow window in the window with the message

"Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

There are no icons visible. The only action I can perform is CTL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Windows Task Manager. I told my brother to start in Safe Mode from which he scanned the computer using AVG Free Edition which was installed before the infection. This did not fix the problem.

Starting Safe Mode I now get a black screen with Safe Mode in the corners and the operating system name at top. The blue login screen then comes up with Administrator and my brothers account. I click on Administrator and I get the same black screen as before with Safe Mode in the corners and the writing at top. My brothers account does the same. There are no icons or Start button visible.

Again, the only program I can bring up is the Windows Task Manager. Using that, I managed to install and run SmitfraudFix which was given as a solution to "Spyware detected" screen. After rebooting this did not fix the problem. I also installed SpyHunter 3.5.11 which found Zlob.Trojan, Rogue.AntivirusXP 2008 plus some other ... Read more
