Solved: How do I move email contacts from win mail to thunderbird?

Q: Solved: How do I move email contacts from win mail to thunderbird?

I have about 100 email contacts on my laptop using windows mail. The OS is vista. Each contact is a separate file so that I have 100 contact files. My other PC uses win7 & Thunderbird. I copied the contacts into my win7 PC & have been trying to import them into TB without success. Windows mail use a different system than have I seen in the past where all the names & email addresses are in 1 file such as *.wab or some such extension. When I try "tools-import" in TB the choices are "address books, mail, settings or filter. Contacts are not listed. I tried converting them to a csv file & importing them as an address book & it seemed to be working, ie csv was a choice under the import & a csv file was created but the data displayed in TB mail was useless. The names appeared but the email fields were blank. But, when I clicked on "properties" for each entery, the email address appeared twice under the field names "nickname" & "display" What am I doing wrong. HELP!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You could try a repair of WLM. Go to Programs and Features, highlight "Windows Live Essentials", click on change/uninstall at the top, and choose repair in the next window. All installed parts of WLE will be repaired, including Mail.

I started receiving emails from a few friends this morning asking me if I indeed send out an email titled "Secure shopping" from my yahoo mail address recommending them to shop at a website (www).ushopcn.com I first thought it went to a few email addresses (mostly obsolete since I deliberately do not use my yahoo email much). But later in the day I received the copy of this email and I could clearly see that it did go out to a lot more email addresses than I thought and I now suspect to all of them in my yahoo address book. I sent out a short email to most who have received it apologizing profusely! (not from yahoo mail of course!). I then noticed that my address book in yahoo mail is wiped out. Strangely, the email showed up just a few times in my Sent Folder (and only showing that it went to ONE email at a time...when, from my friends' forwarded emails back to me. it was obvious that it did go to MANY at the same time!).

I have run Spybot S&D and mbam...I am clean they tell me. I have deleted most of the emails in my Yahoo Mail folders. I have not attempted to send out a new email from Yahoo Mail. Everything else appears to be functioning properly, including my Outlook mail and GMail accounts where I do most of my email stuff.

I am now paranoid...What else can I do? I would appreciate any help from the experts here, thanks!

A:Importing contacts from Thunderbird to Windows Mail

Hi swarfega,

Have a look at the following webpage for details on exporting Thunderbird address book files: Export Thunderbird's Address Books and Contacts. Select a format that is compatible, i.e. CSV or LDIF. Save the files in their converted form. I suggest that you give them a slightly different name. Alternatively, backup the original files to removeable media prior to converting them. To import the files into Windows Mail, click on 'File', highlight 'Import' and click on 'Windows Contacts...'. Click either 'CSV (Comma Separated Values)' or 'LDIF (LDAP server)' and then click on 'Import'.

The "new improved" Yahoo Mail isn't. In fact, it's vexing, mortifyingly slow, and no longer allows open folders while creating new messages so you can't copy and paste with both items open. Since Yahoo won't permit going back to the old, reliable version. So, I'm seriously considering a switch to Mozilla's Thunderbird v 24.0.1 on my Win7-64 desktop and my wife's Win7-64 laptop. She uses the paid version of Yahoo and I'm on the free version.

Once I get Thunderbird going, does anyone know how I can:
get mail addressed to me at Yahoo forwarded to me in Thunderbird?
import my Yahoo contacts into Thunderbird?
import my Yahoo folders and their contacts into Thunderbird?
I'm not a techie, so I'd greatly appreciate learning how I can go about this. Thanks in advance.

I've tried importing contacts from Windows Live Mail (CSV) to Thunderbird

(CSV) at least half a dozen times with the same results. Instead of

getting readable contacts, I get a decending column of tiny icons (see

attachment). Each tiny icon is a contact when double clicked, otherwise,

they're not readable and not in any particular order.

I've imported my address book into Yahoo and Gmail without any problems.

Can't find anything in Google or Bing that resembles the problem. Odd

thing is, I've had this happen before so I might be building something

into the system. I've also changed the "view" to large icons but that

didn't help. I quit using Thunderbird because of the problem but thought

I would give it another try. Just checked The TSG forum and my last try at this is still posted from 5 years ago with another computer.

Any suggestions appreciated.

A:Solved: Problem importing contacts into Thunderbird

You need to do some manipulation when you make as CSV file.
See this link in mozilla. Very good info about importing contacts into Thunderbird.
The issue you are facing must be due to column mismatch and/or delimiter character.

Win Mail drives me crazy - in Outlook Express your contacts are displayed in a long list on the left side, you just click on a name and an email comes up - it takes 2/3 secs.

In Win Mail, there's no list on the screen - & it can take you about 5 clicks and 15 secs or more to get an email up for a contact. (Even when you find your contact, you then have to click Action and email - you can't just double click on the name).

Is there a way to display contacts and just click on a name to get an email - as per Outlook Express? Thanks.

After the desktop computer I was using until a couple of weeks ago crashed (permanently), I bought a new computer (AMD quad chip, Windows 7 64 bit). I put the main hard drive from the old computer into a case, and was able to connect it by USB to my new computer to save my data (I copied the libraries onto the new computer), but have not been able to find out how to rescue my Live Mail account information, contacts, message rules and saved or unread emails. Any article I find talks about first exporting the information, but since the hard drive that version of Live Mail is on is no longer bootable, I have no way to export the data. If I can find where to locate it, I would like to be able to copy the files into the new computer, replacing whatever files would be set up when I first start Live Mail. The old computer was Windows 7 32 bit. Any help with this would be appreciated.

A:Problems moving Live Mail accounts, contacts and email

Were you signing in to WLM on the old computer? If so, your contacts are at the website contacts.live.com and will be imported into the new program when you sign in. They should also be here for 2011:C:\Users\<windows username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts; (in 2009/2010 the sub-folder under Microsoft is "Windows Live Contacts").

The message store folder is along a similar path ending in "Windows Live Mail".

You could try dragging and dropping the contents of the old folders into the new. I've done this only with contacts to see if it would work for the not-signed-in case. It worked for me in 2009/2010 but in the process I had to answer a lot of prompts with "try again" or "yes" since WLM wants to be sure you really want to do this. BTW, the folders may look empty but that's only beause they are hidden by default; they can be dragged even if not visible by selecting everything in the right pane of the Explorer window showing the folder's contents.

The messages may work the same way. If not you can make them visible by changing the folder/view option to not "hide protected operating system files". Create new folders in Windows Explorer to keep your groups of *.eml files, then use WLM's import messages feature to navigate to each folder separately and bring it's contents in to WLM.

As for the accounts and message rules, I usually just set that up from scratch myself even though there is an export/imp... Read more

Dear All,

I have been using windows live mail since quite a few time now.
While I logged in to my msn messenger today it asked me to update as there was a new version available.
I did that and alongwith messenger it updated and installed other programs as well.
It updated my WLM and gave it a new look. I NOW HAVE VERSION 2009 (BUILD 14.0.8064.0206)
I was happy to see the inbuilt calender which was not there earlier.
But what it did with my contacts was shoking.
I have 1197 contacts in my Windows Live Mail Contacts.
It is showing all 1197 names but only showing emails of about a 100 contacts. Rest all email addresses are lost, only their names are there.

Please tell me how this problem can be resolved and why did this happen?

I am eagerly awating your reply.

A:Problem on updating Windows Live Mail / LOST EMAIL ADDRESSES OF CONTACTS

Hi All,

This same problem happened to me, plus I have some additional info.

Just like the earlier poster, I am a longtime user of Windows Live Mail. I was prompted to update and did so, and liked a number of improvements.

However, the email addresses of my contacts had been removed, along with all info other than just the contact names. The number of contact names is unchanged, and as far as I can tell, all the same names are there. The few email addresses that do remain (about 20 out of 500) were all used recently, AFTER the first launch of the previous WLM version on this computer, which is new since February. My guess is that these email addresses were automatically added per the preference setting "add email addresses to contacts after third reply."

Here is the added info: when I tried to import my contacts again from a CSV file, it didn't work. A window came up saying that the program was updating my contacts, and it took a REMARKABLY long time, but after it finished, I was left with the same scenario. My CSV file is still good, but WLM will not work with it.

I'm out of ideas. Please help.

Thanks to all in advance.

Is there any way to move the cached contacts to another PC.....

For example; if you send an email to a new email address, (say [email protected]) outlook saves it somewhere, and the next time you type K, that address, plus all the other ones beginning with K will drop down.

The email address is not in the address book, as it would have had to be added manually.
If someone know where these contacts are stored, and if they can be moved, it'd be a great help.

A:Solved: Outlook 2003 - how to move cached contacts to a different PC

The auto-complete suggestions in Outlook come from what is called a nickname list that is generated by Outlook over an extended period of time. The files that are used with the nickname list have the extension .nk2 and are usually stored in the following location:

C:\Documents and Settings\your-profile\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
These .nk2 files may be hidden so make sure to enabling viewing of hidden files within Windows explorer. Once you find the files you can try copying them from one Windows profile to another to see if the auto-suggestions will be transferred. I've never done this myself but I would assume the you would need the same contacts in your contacts folder or address book as well.

You can also type the first few letters of an email address and press CTRL + K to autoresolve the address or bring up the list of possible values to choose from.

I think I agreed to an update of live mail a couple of nights ago. The live mail client looks COMPLETELY different, probably good (who knows), but first thing was that when I typed in a name I use frequently to send messages to (which usually just brings up the address) nothing happened, so I pressed the "to" field, which usually brings up my list of contacts where I can search and found that there are no contacts; then I tried opening contacts (from bottom left pick options) and it simply will not open.

What I have done to no avail so far:

SMTP settings (which are identical in both computers and both use Avast! AV) are as follows:

Server Name: smtp.att.yahoo.com
Port: 25
User Name: [email protected]
Authentication method: Password, transmitted insecurely
Connection Security: None

The WIN 7 laptop is using Thunderbird version 12.0.1 and I can email from this unit without any problems. I do not want to upgrade Thunderbird on the laptop until my mail issue in XP has been resolved.

I don't mind trying new software for this. But uploading and swapping vcards around seems crazy in this day and age?

Any ideas?

A:Solved: Email Contacts, must be an better way?

Solved it. CSV. But through Vistas email programme as it imports contacts through vcards and can export CSV

I have a HP desktop with Vista home premium. I just loaded AVG free as my virus/email/spam checker but am unable to get it to read my incoming or outgoing email from Mozilla Thunderbird. It looks like the interference is that Microsoft Outlook also resides in the software even though I don't use it. (freebie from HP). They list it as the default. Is there anyway one can configure the free AVG to recognize email originating from Thunderbird? They don't seem to list any other options in advanced options for other email sources. Is AVG just out of the picture as an email tester?
Thanks, Paul

Is there a simple way of bouncing emails and blocking the sender? I can't find one. I tried to block somebody but all his emails remain in the junk folder and he can still send emails to me.

I'm trying to get Thunderbird/AVG to work together in scanning emails that are sent/received but am having problems.

I've posted on the mozillaZine forum but had no luck in resolving the issue yet.

The problem...

I've just installed AVG free & am trying to get the email scanner to work.

It all works happily with yahoo. Sending/receiving/scanning.
It's scans/receives incoming hotmail OK, but I can't send an email - I get a server error trying to connect to
It won't send or receive emails thru' gmail. Sending displays a server error and it receives nothing even tho' there are emails to retrieve.

I've gone thru' all the instructions etc. on the AVG website and tried just about every combination of server ports, types of authentication but to no avail.

I'd be grateful for more help anyone can provide.

(By the way, I have 2 yahoo, 1 hotmail & 1 gmail - configured via POP - that I use T'bird for).

Have a read HERE.
While it speaks to Outlook Express and DBX files, the same applies to Thunderbird MBOX files.

Email scanners, in my opinion, do nothing to protect your computer but DO cause numerous problems, from configuration issues such as yours to damage to the mail files.
Just turn them off.

Wasn't sure if this was the right place, but it seems to be the best choice, being a Mozilla forum.

Anyways, I recently got a site email to one where I had been a moderator for a long time and recently became a co-admin. It was a new feature the head admin set up. Problem is, I can't seem to get it to work. There are two others who have theirs set up and working fine, including the admin. I'm using TB because he suggested it, as it would be easy for him to help me set it up.

I set up everything as I believe it should be. The email server and port and all the information about it. However when I go to long in, I get the following error:

Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server esc153.midphase.com responded: Authentication failed.

I don't think it can be a server side error because other users are using it fine. I know the password is correct, even the admin tried and he's the one that set up the password for me, he would have copied it directly from the messaging we had.

Any suggestions?

I just got my new computer today so I Installed TB and restored with Mozbackup. I'm receiving emails just fine but this is the message when I send emails:

Sending of message failed.
Unable to authenticate to SMTP server smtp.charter.net. It does not support authentication (SMTP-AUTH) but you have chosen to use authentication. Please change the 'Authentication method' to 'None' in the 'Account Settings | Outgoing Server (SMTP)' or contact your email service provider for instructions.

I follow the instructions but under "Authentication Method' , None is not one of the listed option.

1. Password Transmitted Insecurely
2. Encrypted Password
3. Kerberos/GSSAPI

What can I do next? Thanks.

A:[SOLVED] Can't send email with Thunderbird.....

Charter doesn't use authentication, Try setting up your smtp server manually. Go to Tools > Account Settings > select Outgoing Server

Or select Number 1 in your list -

I have W7 premium with LIVE MAIL. A friend stayed with me and she sent some emails to her daughter in Spain using my PC.
I know her very well and she is not computer savvy. However, after she left, I am getting an extra Windows live mail screen with her email to sign in which comes over my normal mail screen. All my contacts have been changed to her contacts and I cannot find my email contacts.
There is nothing sinister here as I know her for over 40 years but I am sure it is something simple to change back but cannot find it on any microsoft help centre. Her email address is with hotmail.com.
Any help please. Thanks

A:Solved: W7 live mail contacts

I have partially solved the contacts dilemma. I have signed in again with my emaill address and have got my contacts back.
I am still getting a windows live mail screen when I click on live mail which I could live with.
I will check this as solved but if anyone knows how to stop the windows mail screen appearing over my login, please do.
