contents of C\windows switched with contents of c\program files

Q: contents of C\windows switched with contents of c\program files

I am not a 100% on how I managed this but here were my last steps:
- changed the host file in c\windows\system32\drivers\etc
- rebooted computer
- received system errors, so I ran a HDD defragmenter
- I then tried to access a file in c\program files but could not find it, but it mysteriously felt like I was in the c\windows directory. So I looked in c\windows and found the file I was previously looking for in c\program files.

The other problem is that any file or program that is rooted in those folders gives me an error message reading "location is unavailable" whenever I try to access it.

Needless to say, My computer is JACKED and I would appreciate and help on this.

If this is at all confusing just ask and i will try to explain it better

Preferred Solution: contents of C\windows switched with contents of c\program files

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: contents of C\windows switched with contents of c\program files

Try doing a System Restore predating the issue.

I just switched from Windows XP to Windows 7, I backed up all my files to an external HDD and now I've transferred them all back, but I've noticed the folder they were in says it's read only... or rather, it's not ticked, it has a blue square on read only.

According to Security I have access to everything... is this a problem or not? Should I go to folder properties and make read only unchecked just to make sure all my files will be usable and modifyable?

A:Just switched to Windows 7, contents of External Drive are read only?

Hello Xirix,

A blue filled check box is just the default neutral setting that is always displayed. File is not read-only. For a folder, it means all files in the folder not to be set as read-only.

On the 21st of this month my computer desktop/folders/startmenu disappeared. Constant errors about hard drive failures. After running the WD diagnostics with no errors I suspected a virus. CA Security Center found and quarantined : FraudWindowsRecovery, FraudSystemRepair, WebSearch Toolbar. I downloaded and ran malwarebytes which removed 179 Trojan type entries and SuperAntiSpyware which removed 519 threats. I am at the point now where I am still missing contents in my start menu folders, I still cannot launch system restore, I am still getting redirected in Google to sites that were not the intended site. CA scans come up clean now, SuperAntiSpyware scans come up clean, Malwarebytes scans come up clean. I downloaded GMER as per your instructions but it launches with an error "LoadDriver(Path of my local user in documents and settings\temp\uwdyquod.sys)Cannot create a stable subkey under a volitale parent key"
I am at a loss what to do next.

Recently, I lost an RTF file (pressed save button, it finished saving, then I got a BSOD). Turned my PC back on and used it normally. An hour later, I opened the file to go back to work and found the surprise 80% of its contents were deleted. (Opened it in Notepad, and the rest are either numbers from picture data, or blank spaces, hex editor gave no results.)

It happens that was the only file on my computer to contain the keyword: "detergent" (among others which also satisfy this paragraph). When I open the Start Menu and type "detergent", I get the file listed, even when the word isn't currently inside. That told me my file (or at least some of its words, which reading would help me reconstruct my document) was stored somewhere else.

Testing to see if the corrupted file still contains the word, I moved it to a different location and performed a search. The keyword wasn't found inside the file. With this I noticed that basically, Windows Search has the file contents stored and associated with the file directory, and it does not go inside the file and read it every time you perform a search.

So I went and extracted the Windows.edb file (Windows Search database) with a tool called "libesedb". The keyword was nowhere to be found inside.

So I concluded the contents are stored inside the CI files located in "ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Projects\SystemIndex\Indexer\CiFiles"
CI = Content Index/Index Contents... Read more

A:Opening CI Files (Windows Search Index Contents)

When you first activate Windows Search, it scans your HDD and maps or Indexes all of the files on the computer. Search is set to re-Index your drive for updates to files every once in a while like a week or a month. So, if you move a file one day from the last indexing and then search for it, Search will not find it because that files has not been indexed in the new location. Since you were in the process of saving the original file and then the computer crashed, it did not get a chance to save all of the file, and the file is corrupted. It would take far longer for you to try and retrieve a copy of the file, since it no longer exists, then it would be to recreate it.
But you can try Recuva. TestDisk

You could try searching the shareware download sites for "Tooltip shell extention" and see what you get. With all the Windows utilities out there
I'd be surprised if there wasn't one that did that.

Is there a program which can find / show identical (by byte) content of a folder (folder names may be different or not)?

So, all folders (with different or same names) which have identical content shall be displayed.

Identical content: each file of a duplicate content folder would be equal by content (not by their names) to a file in a duplicate folder.

The folders equal by their contents being found should be displayed so that all of them besides of one of them could be removed.

Thanks in advance...

I am a writer and over a period of years I have put snippets of text in small files. Some of these files are duplicates of other files but with a different file name. Some of these files are combinations of other files. No duplicate file names exist in the directory. In all, I have 2700 small files in one directory. All files to be compared are txt files. What I want to do is find the duplicate files and find the duplicate text content of the files. What is the best way to find only original content in each of the files? If necessary, I can collect all the files into one large file but what would I do next? What I am looking for is some kind of automated way to compare the file contents rather than my having to do all of this by hand.

Most file compare utilities only compare file names and if they compare content you do not see the content.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

A:Need to compare contents of files in one directory

You could get a file compare utility like ExamDiff or WinMerge, both are freeware. WinMerge is more powerful, but ExamDiff is easier to work with and for what you're doing it should be fine. It will compare two text files and show you the differences.

I would sort the files by size and then compare the ones that are the same or close in size.

Yesterday I decided to cut and paste a 1.3 gig folder from one partition to another on a seperate drive. The file transfer proceeded, however, after a couple of minutes a message appeared saying it couldn't move the folder as it was currently being used by another program.

I closed notepad which was the program involved. I then went to the partition where the folder was originally kept but the folder was not present. I went to partition where I had attempted to move the folder and found the folder but it was completely empty. Somewhere on my drives is 1.3 gig of infornmation in about six files,

I did a general search hoping to find the files to no avail. I would appreciate suggestions on how I could recover these files. I am using Windows XP pro SP2 with system recovery de-activated and NTFS.

Hey guys, new to the site but hoping you can help me out.

Until recently iv been able to drag and drop files into the java and zip files and move around files within them.
I tryed to install a mod today the same as i have before by simply dragging and dropping into the (java) file using Winrar only for it to give me a small circle with a slash through the middle resembling a no entry sign. i haven't made any changes to my PC, at least not knowingly so i don't know why this has happened or how to fix it. I tried a few different programs to open them other than Winrar including Winzip and 7-zip but the same thing happened, also tried with other zip and java files and still no luck.

Anyone else had this problem and have a solution or any suggestions on how to fix it?

Thank you in advance for any replays.

Hey Folks,
This one has me stumped. I have a copy of my organizations code repositories pulled down on my desktop. I added the file type extensions to the index options (as text files). And I've re-built the index twice.

If I open the root folder and use the windows explorer search, it takes ~30 minutes to chew through all of the files and gives me a full list of everything that has the search term in it. Super useful when someone wants to migrate a server or alter an
enterprise table.

If I use PowerShell and query the SystemIndex though, I see a problem. If I query just to see if the files exist in the SystemIndex, they all show up. But if I throw a Contains('keyword') condition on the query, only files in some of the folders show

Say for example that I have to identical copies of a file "MyClass.Java". And inside each file is a class definition. And these two files are in separate folders "folder1" and "folder2".

If I query systemindex for anything containing class, I will consistently see 1 result with the Folder1\MyClass.Java file, but Folder2\MyClass.Java will not return. I can verify that it does exist in the index by removing the contains criteria and seeing both
files returned in the query.

I'm at a loss though, all of the discussions I've read online have to do with added the file type to the index, adding the folder to the index, and how to run the query. Everything appears to be set co... Read more

Hi, I am brand-new at this. After reading almost everything I can find on your website about the System Restore virus which I had on Dell PC. Using a different PC to communicate, download programs, etc. Running Windows XP Home on infected PC. Had all the messages as described in your System Restore virus tutorial. I was not able to open my security program which is provided by my internet provider and has since that time become outdated, so if I can get my internet back, I can update it and/or possibly purchase a better security option. At first, my internet was still working. After finally getting the virus window to minimize, I got to my home page, but could not get anywhere really. Ran RKill, then TDSS Killer (before the major attach of System Restore, I had been having problems with Google searches, but had no idea that was also a virus issue), Super Antispyware, then ran Malwarebytes program, and finally the Unhide program. After all of this, no internet. Most files reappeared, but lots of them are empty. Went back to your website and read some more. I flashed my machine up this morning to do the first e-mail check of the day and to my horrow windows mail is empty! That included accounts, generated folders and all of the mail contents.

I know they were there last night (1930) as I sent mail at that time but this morning it resembles a virgin account?

Is there a way of recovering the contents of my mail account?

I have checked on Virgin Mail and within the e-mail section which conects to the same e-mail address and it shows what I believe to be all of my mail. So I believe it is still "out there" but it is just not in my windows mail account.

as an aside virgin mail, for me, is so un weildy that I would not like to use it as an everyday item.

I've had this problem for quite some time, and never bothered with it, because it wasn't crippling the use of my computer. But I'm trying to clean up my computer, and I want to try to tackle this now.

My problem is that I can't view things in windows explorer. When I open up certain folders (c, windows, temporary internet files, etc), it ends up looking like this with only the top row of folders visible:

I can access the folders directly through the address bar, or I can scroll through them with the arrow keys (beneath the field of vision) and the name will show up at the top. But I still can't view them. Many of my folders are fine, so I'm not sure why these ones are like this.

Someone told me it had something to do with my registry, but I hesitate to go mucking about in there unless I know what I'm doing.

My wife's computer was recently infected with several viruses which caused task manager, regedit, and folder options to be disabled. I discovered a simple program to manually correct the problem since I could not use regedit. Unfortunately the computer still has a major problem and I have had no success finding a solution. The hard drive has two partitions. Both show the correct size and the space remaining properly. However, when you open either drive, very few files are displayed. I know the files are there because all of the installed programs work fine. The option to show hidden files has been selected. Using the DOS prompt and a simple DIR, the files are still not visible. However, when using a antivirus program (AVG and NOD 32), all of the files are listed when a scan is performed. I should also add that when you try to open the D partition, you are given the option of which program to select to open a file of unknown type. MY DOCUMENTS does not have any problems as well.

I am totally stumped and would appreciate any guidance you may be able to provide.

I am running XP SP3 and i cannot get windows search 4.0 to index my microsoft word and PDF file contents. Is this possible? For example i want to be able to type 'angina' into my search box, and it will find every word/pdf document with angina in the text. Currently it only finds them if this is in the title.

I have been to options > advanced > file types, and checked that .doc, .docx, and .pdf all have 'index file properties and contents' ticked.

I have also waited so that the indexing process now says 'indexing finished'.

I have also checked that the indexer is indexing the correct locations where these files are stored. The indexer is able to index the contents of my emails, but it seems not my word documents. it is very frustrating!!

when i started windows today & open the windows explorer,
the display of Libraries is shown like this

the details are gone
so i click the View/Choose Details to sort the contents of the folders
after i pick Name and Size, the display is shown like this

i clicked the other folder, and all of the contents are also missing the details
& when i go back to the folder Libraries, the display goes back blank,
without details just like the first time i opened windows explorer

how do i get windows explorer to show the details of all folders like it used to?
i even did the system restore, but it's still not showing the details of folder contents..

A:Contents Details Not Shown in Windows Explorer

Hello ngawurblas,

Welcome to the Seven Forums. Hope you enjoy your stay.

After setting the folder to details view, go to Organize/Folder and Search Options/View tab. Click on Apply to Folders. This will apply this view to all folders of this type.

Hope this helps. Please keep us informed.

I am still having difficulty finding and retrieving files after reinstalling Windows XP. I have tried 2 recovery programs without success. I don't beleive the files were ever damaged or deleted. Can I get into DOS and with the proper commands see what is on the hard drive. The drive has never crashed. I'm thinking that the files still exist but the new Windows doesn't know their location. (An old Windows file was created when I installed the current Windows from the restoration disks that came with the Gateway computer).
It has a pentium 4 processor and is 1 1/2 years old.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

A:How do I get into DOS in Windows XP to view contents of hard drive?

If running FAT32 then you can simply insert a good ole Windows 98 boot disk.

Windows XP also has the command prompt. Start/run/cmd/enter

Other than that you would have to use some other type of utility. Especially if its NTFS.

If you did format over it you may want to try something like Ontrack EasyRecovery.

No matter what windows Explorer should show you the entire contents of the HDD in question if its fat32 or NTFS so the internal search feature should work.

does W7 have the ability to search for content in an asp file? I have changed the settings for folder options but it's still not finding a file that is a .asp that I know has specific content in it.

A:How do I search the contents of an .asp or .aspx file in Windows 7?

Does the issue occurs on all *.asp files or only certain files? I suggest you also check the ownership of these files and make sure that you are the owner of these files. Also please include the folder that stores the *.asp files into the search index.

This is a little unusual request and not exactly what it sounds like. Take my music folder, in this instance. I have multiple folders dedicated to each artist that composed the song. So, for example, a song by Group 1 will be in a different file location than a song by Group 2. Here's an example:

My goal is to, in any way possible, find some way to view all of these files in Windows Explorer without having to keep them all in the same folder (file location). I'm trying to do this because, sometimes, I want to organize all of my music by a certain tag (such as Rating, Bitrate, Genre or Mood). However, I don't want to put them all into one folder (thus changing their file location) because then, whenever I need to reference specific songs for an application or just when I'm looking for a specific song rather than trying to organize them by a certain tag, keeping them all in one folder becomes miserable (since I have THOUSANDS of songs).
I tried using a library file, but I obtained the following result:

However, as you'll notice, they're separated by folder. No matter what tag I decide to organize them by (as you can see "Contributing Artists" and "Album" tags to the side) they'll still stay confined to their respective folders. I just want some way to view all of my files in one list and be able to organize them all by various tags without having to keep them all in the same folder (in Windows 8.1 Explorer). That's all there is to it, and... Read more

A:Combining Folder Contents in Windows Explorer

find some way to view all of these files in Windows Explorer without having to keep them all in the same folder (file location).

You want to create a new folder, name it whatever you would like. This is the folder where you will be able to view all of these files. Go to the folder where some of your files are, select them all>right click>create a shortcut. The new shortcuts will be created in the same folder. Move these shortcuts to the recently new folder we created.Repeat step 2 with your other files.Add your new folder to Windows Favorites or Libraries if you chose to.
The files will remain in the same location that you currently have them, but now you have a folder with shortcuts that will give you the illusion of having all the files in one place. There are media players that will do a better job at creating or organizing all of your music via bpm, artist, genre. If you want to do this in Windows Explorer though this is one way to do it.

I have installed a Samsung SH-D162 external DVD drive on my HP Touchsmart IQ524, Windows 7, via USB and here is the issue:

It shows in Device Manager, in my computer as drive G under Devices with Removable Storage. I am unable to read anything on a disc. If I right click on the G drive it will run for hours. I have hooked it up to my neighbor?s computer, XP, USB and it works fine. I have removed the upper and lower filters in regedit and re-installed the driver. This has sucked enough out of my life. Can anyone provide an answer?

A:Windows 7 wont read contents of external DVD drive

Some external drives do not draw enough power from the motherboard to make them work without one of those USB cables you plug into two USBs on your computer and the other side into your drive. It may be this.

Has the same drive worked on this computer with another operating system installed. If not this may be it. You can get these cables at most electronics stores.

If the drive HAS worked on the computer with another operating system.....it will be something else.

Please try other USB ports if you have not tried that already.

On my 2 Windows 2000, SP2 Servers, whenever I try opening up a web page using Internet Explorer (e.g. like Google.com)...it simply sits there. It does not retrieve the page and sits there for a long time until time out. I cannot get to any web pages, but can ping the web pages (e.g. ping www.google.com).

Furthermore, this also happens to other components like Network Neighborhood. Where I would try to open up Network Neighborhood but only get the busy icon.

Any ideas?

I'm trying to help a friend with their computer. They have a fairly new high-end Dell computer running Windows XP Pro. When one logs into to their profile the Windows System 32 file contents pops up, and has to be closed to proceed. They said it has been doing this from day one. They have never owned or used a computer, so they had no idea it was not suppose to pop up.

Is there a way to correct this?

We should also check for malware

* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

A:Windows 'Text Document' arrange contents alphabetically ?

I don't think so, at least not with Notepad. There may be some text editors out there that will do it, but I've never heard of one.

Windows 7 SP1 64-bit

When I attempt to view a specific folder's contents in Windows Explorer, it appears to be stuck in a loop and does not show the contents. The scroll-bar on the right flashes non-stop. This only started today.

If I rename the folder, the problem goes away and I can view the folder content.

If I then rename the folder back to what it was before, the problem returns.

This issue also occurs with the same specific folder, if I boot into Safe-Mode (which would seem to rule out it being a 3rd-party software conflict issue).

If I login using a different user account the problem does not occur (so it seems to be an issue
with the user account).

The problem does not occur if I map a drive from a second computer and view the folder contents.

The problem doesn't occur when I use the Save As function to save another file to that specific folder.

I have performed an extended memory check, along with running "chkdsk /R" with no change in behavior.

Any helpful tips on getting to the bottom of this would be much appreciated. I did find a reference to someone else having the same issues in a different forum (from Dec 2011); however, no help was forthcoming.

A:Windows Explorer stopped showing folder contents

I used the following procedure which cleared up the folder content display loop preventing Windows Explorer from showing the folder contents:In the Tree Pane of Windows Explorer, I highlighted the problem folder
Activated the Menu Bar via Organize | Layout
On the menu bar I used View | Customize this folder...Selected General Items for the Optimize this folder for option

I applied the change and the folder contents once again became viewable (no slider bar flashing).
Changing the Optimize option back to Pictures still allowed the folder contents to be viewed.
