Preferred Solution: sleep mode options in windows 8

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sometimes it wakes up at about 3am and does secret stuff while you're sleeping.

I want to enable my Win7 netbook to automatically wake itself from Sleep Mode when it's plugged in.

If you want more detail...

I want this because I basically am using the netbook as a jukebox for my car--and it will always be plugged into the cigarette adapter, but I have it wired to my trunk because I will control iTunes remotely, but I can't power it up remotely, so I just want it to wake from sleep automatically when I start the ignition. Thanks!

Just a suggestion, but I think using PC's in cars like this is in the past! Grab a USB MP3 player like everyone else. I got one in my '95 Ranger and it's limited only by the size of my USB stick or external HD.

When I did the 'powercfg -a' it said only S3 was available, and in my bios, there doesn't appear to be any options at all to modify sleep settings (aside from turning on/off S3).

Pretty much the same problem here.
In my case the sleep mode was working just fine couple weeks ago.
Also my restore points date back only about an week, so that won't help me.
Problem started when i installed new graphics card drivers from ati/amd.
For some reason the install had failed or something since my graphics card was suffering from error 36 after the update.
It took me quite a while to get rid of that error, but when i finally did, i noticed i was missing both hibernate & sleep mode options.

Some specs below.

When I was using Windows XP, I had it set up so when I pressed the power button on the front of my case, after a couple of seconds, the PC would power-down. When I pressed it again, within a couple of seconds it was back up to the desktop again. I think it achieved this by powering down fans and hard-drive, while keeping the memory refreshed.
How do I do it on Vista?

I've tried Sleep and Hibernate. Sleep just shuts my monitor off. Hibernate does the same, but reboots my computer after a few seconds.

BIOS is set to support S1 & S3, same as it was under XP.

Can anyone help?

I've had my ASUS for only a few months and it works like a charm, but I noticed a few days ago that it's not going into sleep mode anymore. The only changes I've made were:
1. Installed nod32 (antivirus)
2. Changed my desktop wallpaper
3. Installed the Adobe update

That's it. I didn't change anything else, but now my screen will stay lit up all night if I don't turn it off.

I tried turning the screensaver on, and it works in Preview, but never turns on on its own. I tried changing my wallpaper back. I changed the timing on the power settings. I've turned it off several times. I tried unplugging it and letting it run on battery. I'm using the Balanced power management option. I tried changing the power management option. Nothing works for me.

I've read that other people have similar problems. Sometimes it's a program running in the background that Windows sees as user activity... one guy said he uninstalled Norton and reinstalled and that fixed his problem. Sometimes it's an optical mouse, some random device plugged into a USB slot, or weird settings. There are a lot of people complaining about it, and now I join their ranks. I have no idea what to do.

Help?

A:Sleep Mode, Screensaver, Power Options not working

Asus customizes Power Options with many reports of dysfunction - another example of how useless factory utilties have much better versions built into Win7.

Enter Control Panel>Power Options and choose a Balanced Plan unless you're a gamer, use High Performance. Then set your Sleep options.

Screensavers are outmoded with LCD monitors and can hang sleep. I would turn it off and use Win7 backgrounds slideshow. You can download 120 spectacular Win7 national edition screensavers: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/0...free-download/

If Sleep still hangs check your logs here especially the Performance log which logs these types of hangs with the cause often nearby.

You can also bring up a list of apps blocking sleep: http://jack.ukleja.com/fix-for-windo...sleep-problem/

If all else fails, use the tracing tool which the Pro's use: Trace Windows 7 boot/shutdown/hibernate/standby/resume issues - MSFN

I’m working on my daughter’s MSI A6200 laptop running Windows 7, Home Premium, 64 bit.

The computer was freezing up from time to time and then stopped working. It hung up when I tried to reboot. I went to safe mode, used msconfig to turn off all system services and start-up programs, rebooted but no change. Rebooted in safe mode with networking but all network connections are gone, the wireless adapter seems disabled but it does show in Device Manager. Interestingly, the “sleep” light on the laptop is lit. I opened control panel and clicked on Power options but nothing happens.

I downloaded Norton’s emergency bootable recovery tool and booted via a USB drive. I scanned the laptop and it found a virus but I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t write down what it was (I foolishly thought I was done). I ran it again and it came up with nothing. There may be a log somewhere but I couldn’t find it this morning. I have a feeling the virus did some damage before I removed it.

Can you help me repair my laptop? Get my wireless adapter back and resolve the power/sleep mode issue?

Thanks very much!
Steve

A:Laptop only boots in safe mode, no wireless, sleep light lit, no power options

That really, really sounds like a motherboard problem.

To eliminate hardware as a possibility I'd back up the data and reinstall to see if it fixes it or not.

Alternatively, you could try booting it off of a linux live distro CD to see if it keeps up its shenanigans.

People write bugs to do strange things though. Is the sleep light lit prior to windows actually booting, or only when in windows?

So I have a keyboard with a fully functional and fully working Sleep Button on it when I press the Sleep Button it will put my Computer to Sleep. However in the latest versions of Windows 10 they have completely removed the Sleep Button Options from the Advanced Power Options as well as the Change what my Power Buttons do section. I used to be able to tell Windows to Hibernate when I pressed the Sleep button in the Advanced Power Options, However that option is now gone! I have tried using Registry Tweaks/Changes etc,.. and I can not seem to get that option back! Does anyone here know how to fix this so that I can tell Windows to Hibernate when I press the Sleep button instead of Sleeping? I would really appreciate some help with this!

Lately - within the past few days my PC has stopped going to sleep based on the Power Options settings. I am not obviously running anything that prevents this. The only "foreground" application running has been my email client - Thunderbird - and it has never prevented sleep before.

I do have a few programs on the PC that prevent sleep, but they were not running. Is it possible they left a "don't sleep" tickler active? (I have no idea how the sleep override works. That was probably a dumb question.)

Is there any way to tell what is keeping Windows awake? Something recorded in the Event Log maybe? (If so, I haven't found it.)

I just had the fan replaced, and now when I use F4 to put the laptop in sleep mode and then close the lid, it remains in sleep mode when I open the lid.  Same thing occurs when I close the lid (no F4) for sleep mode and then open the lid.  However, when I select Sleep on the Windows 7 Start Menu and close the lid, the laptop does resume when I open the lid. NOTES:- Before replacing the fan, I used F4 for sleep and resume, because when I close the lid I would sometimes find the fan running the next morning- BIOS is up-to-date- Keyboard and mouse are set to wake PC- Power Options Settings:   - Allow hybrid sleep set to OFF and Hibernate set to NEVER (As they always have been)   - USB Settings > Disabled USB selective suspend settings  (These were enabled) While this isn't a huge problem, I would like to have things working as before, preferably without having to go back to the Lenovo certified shop. Thank you in advance for your help. Jeff

Hi,
I've had this problem intermittently on my laptop for the past 2 years however it has been occuring more often recently.

Basically sometimes when I click the sleep button on Windows 7, the screen fades to black as usual. However the fan keeps running (sounds like when it's on full load) and the power button light stays on endlessly. I always have to force shut it down and restart it.

What can be the issue?
Thanks.

A:Laptop freezes between entering sleep mode to being in sleep mode

Hi joseph10444.

Such a situation may occur when some driver (mostly the PnP device drivers depending on the ACPI configuration) fail to response within a stipulated time period during the power state change.

Let us see some data. Upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.
Upload the list of all the third party drivers Using NirSoft DriverView :
Download and execute Driverview
View > Hide Microsoft Drivers
Edit > Select all
File > Save Selected Items
In the Save dialog, Set the path to desktop, Put "Driverview" in the name field, and save.
Zip the .txt file and upload it.
Those files will give us a closer look to the issue.

If you have the installation CD try using the Recovery Console to run chkdsk /r.Note: You may need to change the boot order in the BIOS so that the CD-ROM is the first device in the boot order to be able to boot from the Windows installation disk.To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, follow these steps:1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the]Recovery Console.4. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.5. At the command prompt, type chkdsk /r , and then press ENTER. 6. To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Hello just installed Windows 10 a few weeks ago and coming from Windows 7 I really love it had to get a book because it's so much to learn but I'm really enjoying it. The only problem I'm really having is that after installing a few applications windows
10 is now not going into the sleep mode. I read on Cnet about this problem that it might be an application that's running that's not allowing Windows to possibly go into the sleep mode. Hoping someone can help point me in the right direction to get this resolved.
Why is there no forum for Windows !0?? Hope I'm in the right place. Thanks!

Hi,
My Win7 PC has recently stopped powering off in sleep mode. I ran powercfg/energy in command prompt, which gave me a report with 6 errors which state:
"USB Suspend:USB Device not Entering Suspend"
, and one which says:
"Platform Power Management Capabilities:PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) Disabled
PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) has been disabled due to a known incompatibility with the hardware in this computer."

I have googled for answers as much as I can, but with my very low level IT experience, I've yet to fix the problem.

So far I've tried:
updating drivers for all USB devices in device manager (they were all apparently up to date)
checked powersave options

Can somebody suggest other things I should look into?
The main point is that to the best of my knowledge, I haven't installed anything new or changed any settings on my PC (I've been away for a month, but it was powering down fine the first few days on my return).
I'm wondering if some kind of software update could be the cause, but what I'm most worried about is if I've had some kind of a security breach during the course of trawling the internet (I'm using Bit Defender on auto pilot mode, nothing's been reported so far).

Hope someone can enlighten me. Thanks for your time.

A:Windows 7 not going to sleep mode

I just witnessed something else - the PC DOES power down after 30mins of idleness, but then immediately powers up again (I can hear the fan whirring even though the pc and monitor appear to be in sleep mode).

I've tried a lot of stuff:-

registry hack to disable ipv6
switch off any computers that are on the network
using powercfg checked what devices were enabled and cancelled them all

Also it stops loading windows upon the first reset (the circles stop moving when says Loading Windows) then just stays on that screen which requires the reset button to be hit a second time.. finally moving past the loading circles to get to the desktop each time..

I downloaded the latest BIOS version which is a .cab file but trying to update it, says that the cab file cannot be read. Let me know if you need anymore information. Thanks for the help!

I have a Dell inspiron 4010 laptop with Windows 7. I am unable to log on. The safe mode options screen keeps looping, and i am unable to boot. none of the safe mode options work, though the screen shows the loading windows files before restarting the safe mode options screen again. when i press f8 to get the advanced boot options, the system repair option is no longer there (it was there yesterday, but the system restore or system repairs didn't work), nor do any of the advanced boot options work.when i choose to disable automatic restart on system failure it appears that windows is startingbut then goes to a blue screen that says STOP: C0000135 The program can't start because %hs is missing. try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

I believe this is happening as a result of an automatic Windows update.

My computer lately runs really slow on a sporadic basis so I tried doing a registry cleaning and optimization with WinThruster. While it didn't fix my computer's slowness, I've had a new annoying problem pop up.

Every time it goes into sleep mode and I try to access it through logging in, my computer doesn't go straight back to Windows 10 and instead it just loops back into the login screen. It does this even if I input my password or if I just press enter without inputting anything at all. I would have to restart my computer everytime in order to login properly which is annoying. Occasionally I also have the same problem when just turning my computer on, so I'd have to restart. I'd like to be able to properly login from sleep mode again.

A:Can't access Windows 10 from sleep mode

OK, I thought it was just me, but since the AU when I put my machine in 'Sleep', and then later try to revive it, it doesn't come out of sleep and I have to do a hard shut-off, from which it doesn't always completely boot-up, but occasionally hangs, so that I have to do the 'F9' Restore to get it to actually boot into Windows . . .
As a temporary fix I am just not using 'Sleep' for right now . . .

I've been having quite a few problems with my laptop recently and it all started with a software I downloaded so I'll list in order of what happened.

- I have a HP Pavillion DV6000 which I bought a year ago, no problems apart from a faulty motherboard which I had fixed

- I recently downloaded a software known as rocketdock which is nothing more than a copy of the Apple Mac scroll bar that has all the icons.

- I then managed to delete my videos folder by accident and as it was too large, it was not kept in the recycling bin

- I downloaded a programme known as "glaryundelete" that retrieves lost documents and files and got a few of my word documents and a few videos back but some videos were corrupt

- I deleted glaryundelete and rocketdock as my general speed of my laptop decreased for some reason

Problems now:

- My windows aero theme has vanished for some reason and I think this has something to do with system configuration where I changed a few startup settings but I don't remember the original ones

- My laptop does not go into sleep mode. I've never had problems with the sleep mode but all of a sudden it no longer does that when I close the lid or press sleep button.

I've had a look at the power plan settings, they are all perfectly normal and according to them, it should go into sleep mode but it still doesn't.

Does anyone know what's going on or has faced similar problems? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

I upgraded my CQ5320F from Windows 7 to Windows 10 earlier this year and it appears that it no longer shows Sleep Mode as one of the Power options like it did with Win 7. The Power menu shows Shut Down and Restart as being the only options available now with Win 10. Is there a fix for this issue? I'm on Windows 10 Version 1607.

A couple of weeks ago I turned off having Windows to automatically install updates. I did that because there was an update that would not install. Every time I restarted my computer after a few minutes I would get a notice to shut down. I think it was an update about my graphics card.
So For a couple of days my computer has shut itself down while in sleep mode. It evidently takes quite a while for this to happen because often I put it to sleep during the day and it doesn't happen then. My setting is to never put the computer to sleep but to turn off the display in 30 minutes. It's been that way for years with no problem until now. I would appreciate any help and thank you.

Brand new Windows 7 system from Dell and I have a problem almost every time I try & bring it out of sleep mode. Occasionally, it won't come out at all. Frequently, it will come out, allow me to enter my password, the desktop appears ok, but then everything completely freezes. Once, it has also adjusted my monitor resolutions. Every time, a hard reset is needed. Anyone any ideas please?

Windows 7 is freezing in sleep mode now... I don't think it's my drivers or anything because 2 updates earlier it worked fine. I'm wondering if anyone knows if this is an RC problem, or if something is wrong with my computer. I hope not since this computer is only 2 week old... There is like nothing on it and everything downloaded has been from a disk so no viruses (well except kasperky anti-virus but I HOPE that would be clean lol).

Basically when I put it into sleep manually, I cannot get it out, and my power/reset buttons do not work, I actually need to turn off the electricity.

Oh, and it's not my screen considering I CAN turn my screen on but it goes right back into powersave mode (sleep mode). I DID force it out once, and it said no signal from the computer even though the computer is on. This leads me to believe it is the OS (or god forbid one of my parts).

WAAAAAIIIIIITTTTT I just realized something... I have on HD connected via sata cable, but I took the power away from it (I wanted to hear something). I mean is that the possible cause? I doubt it though since it's not registered as an HD due to having no power... And my sound card light is on, so I'm assuming that is still on when I put the computer in powersave mode... Maybe that's an issue?

I could really use some help!  I just did a clean install of Win 7 Ultimate and it seems like no matter what I do nothing works.
It just will not come out of sleep mode, I have to hold power button to reboot.  I am on an Alienware M17x R4 3rd Gen, updated to latest Bios, GTX 680M GPU, all drivers I believe are up to date.

I've had Windows installed from scratch on a PC I put together last year.

Shortly after New Years, I started having problems with Windows crashing when the machine went into sleep mode. It was an intermittent problem at first....I would hear the computer come back on after wiggling my mouse, the fan would go on etc. but nothing would be sent to the monitors.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
ASUS M4A79XTD Evo
4 GB Patriot Ram
ASUS EAH5770cu video card
Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty
Western Digital 1 TB hard drive
LG Blu-Ray drive

Then, I'd force a hard reboot, and sometimes it would come on....and then sometimes I'd end up at a black screen, and have to reboot a second time.

I updated the majority of mobo drivers, flashed the BIOS, etc. The only thing I haven't been able to do is update the hard drive controllers....for some reason every time I try to run the executable to change those, it launches ATI Catalyst Manager for my video card. I figure there are some remnants of the install files from Catalyst Manager sitting around on the hard drive. I looked for the Windows Install Cleanup Utility, but it's no longer available.

The problem seemed to go away.

But the last several days, it's been happening *every* time it goes into sleep mode. And this last time, when I rebooted, I got a blue screen error:

I have a weird sleep issue that just started, I've built a new PC, Win7x64 and just noticed this happening. When I put the computer to sleep manually, the machine looks like it goes to sleep, but the fans keep running and it 'sounds on'. If I wake the PC,
then put it right back to sleep, it goes into deep sleep and the fans go off. Nothing I can see is keeping it awake, I have a i5-2500k, Asus P68 deluxe mobo, and it seems to be a repeatable issue. If the PC wakes up by itself to do something, then goes back
to sleep on its own (times out) it goes into deep sleep. It's only when I manually do it that it has the issue. Anyone ever seen this? Thanks!

A:Windows 7 Sleep mode not turning off fan

I think it does have something to do with the ASUS AI software, although I have it set for maximum power savings...their tools are, well, badly designed and very difficult to navigate. Have been tinkering in here to see if I can get it to stop.
Also, I have the machine connected to a Windows Home Server 2011, this may also be the cause, the Launchpad app seems to like to hold open connections. Am still fiddling with each app, have stripped out most of what is always running to see what may
be causing this.Curt Kessler Franklin Loan Center

Hello,

First of all - can anyone answer me on wich e-mail adress should I send all of my reports to Microsoft regarding Windows 7 problems that I encountered ?
Second, here is the problem wich was very annoying but I did solve it so my point is to warn Microsoft about this so they can fix it in future Windows update or Service Packs for Windows 7.
When you are using (for example I used "High Performance" Power Plan) and in advanced options of any of Power Plans you let option - "Hard disk - Turn off hard disk after" to be turned ON (for example if you make your hard disk turn off after 15 minutes) you will have some serious trouble.

This was happening:

In Windows Vista - all worked well. I would put my PC in sleep mode, get back for hour and just press power button on my PC and he went up pretty fast. That was great option and it was working just fine.

But in Windows 7, I found out trough days and days of testing that when I put my PC to "Sleep mode" if it's "Sleeping" more then 15 minutes - I just can't get it back to desktop from sleep!

I would press Power button, fans would start but then PC would just shut down and try to start itself again and again until i completely shut it down from power and re-started it again.
After some time I was very mystified by this problem and many of my colleagues and friends had similar or the same issue. One day we all discovered that if we set "Turn off hard disk" option to... Read more
