Troubles configuring default gateway W2K server

Q: Troubles configuring default gateway W2K server

Hello.

On my W2K server I have two NIC's, one for the external connection to the internet, and one for the internal connection to my workstation. I was messing around (computers and beer, bad...) so I'm not sure what I've done, but here are the details.

On the internal NIC I've specified an ip of 198.162.255.1, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a default gateway of 198.162.255.1 (I'm assuming the default gateway, because the server is cabled directly to the workstation, is the IP of the server.). Using a default gateway that matches the IP of the server was working, but now when I ipconfig the default gateway is blank. Furthermore, when I ipconfig on the workstation, it picks up an IP from DHCP, but again the gateway is blank. The workstation and server cannot communicate other than the workstation grabbing the IP address.

Can anyone make any suggestions that might lead to a resolution? I'm fresh out of ideas.

Thanks in advance.
Kevin

Preferred Solution: Troubles configuring default gateway W2K server

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am doing an overhaul of my home network, in particular related to safe external connections and safe sharing.

There is no conn issues or alike, I am only looking for an opinion regarding how to connect to my home network from an external computer, and tips regarding safe configuration.

As it is I have one Radmin license which should be a pretty safe way to connect but I am, currently, also able to use RDP protocol.
The obvious advantage with RDP is that I can use any W7 computer. Even my phone,

I have two Windows 2008 based servers, one WHS and one Standard. I was thinking of letting the Standard act as a Gateway and thus removing direct external access to the WHS, I assume that would increase security, but I am not sure of how to configure the Standard server securely. Or if I could use another software than Radmin and RDP to connect.

Tips? Thoughts? Questions?

A:Safest way to VPN to network? Configuring Server 2008 as Gateway...?

Hi Coram,

if you are concerned about security, the safest way of protecting your network is adding a Security Appliance like Sonicwall. You may use VPN or Remote Desktop Services (RDS), either one will be fine but again having a very secured network is beneficial. I am a big fan of Sonicwall.

Hope this helps.

Hello

Here's what I have:

I have a router that provides internet access and connectivity to 2 PC's over lan cables and multiple other stuff over the wireless connection.
One of those two pc's connected over lan is my desktop computer.
My desktop computer has 2 lan ports one is connected to the router and it's used for accessing the internet or sharing files with computers connected with the router.

Here's what I want to do:
I want to use the other lan connector on my desktop computer to directly connect my new laptop so that it can be set it up as a render slave.
I need to connect it directly because it's much faster that way and the router doesn't have more than 2 lan connectors which are both used.

I tried various ways to set up, with straight or crossed cable. I got the direct connection working but the problem is that to make it work the default gateway has to be set.
And if the default gateway is set on desktop connection 2 and laptop connection, there is no internet access on the desktop:

router address:
192.168.1.1

desktop connection 1 > with the router:
ip: 192.168.1.120
mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.1.1
dns: 192.168.1.1

desktop connection 2 > for direct connection with the laptop
ip: 200.200.1.201
mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway 200.200.1.202
dns: none

Laptop connection > for direct connection with the desktop

Correct me if I'm wrong

(Working with old computer, getting it to work)
I was having problems with re-installing Windows XP and SP1-3 updates, and connecting to internet.and getting DNS errs.
Went into ipconfig, and had no default gateway

So, I eventually found my way to windows error reports, doing a search:
for "setuperr"

Turns out the "computer name" had errors in it with non-allowed characters.
Went into Control Panel, clicked on System, did the fix.
No underlines, etc. allowed

Looking into setuperr logs is really helpful, dont ya think?

Hi,
I have been having some trouble with my internet for awhile now. It fine one second and than it will get really slow and eventually stop working. When I troubleshoot to see what the problem is it either gives me DNS server is not responding or default gateway is not available, sometimes it will give me both. It says it fixes the default gateway problem but it will show up again 5 minutes later. If someone could help me that would be awesome

Sometimes I have internet connection for a few seconds, if I'm lucky maybe three minutes. I can get two different messages when I run the Windows Troubleshooting option: "DNS server isn't responding" or "The default gateway is not available." This has been going on about a week. I have not made any changes to my laptop, not even a Windows update, or a driver update, or anything like that.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L655 laptop. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I live in a rural area that does not have home telephone or internet lines, so I access the internet using a 3G data card. There is only one small spot in my house that receives a signal so I have a Zoom Travel Router that I plug the data card into and then use my computer in a different room in the house. This setup has been working great for almost two years.

Below is the coding in the ipconfig file. It's pretty short. The default gateway is the ip address for the Zoom Router as provided in the User Manual. I talked to my ISP provider and they said they could only help me if I plugged the data card directly into the computer. They could not or would not help me if I used a Wifi router.

If you tell me I need to make changes to the ipconfig file, then you will have to tell me how to do that. I'm not afraid to make changes, I'm just not techie enough that I know how to do it.

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. I hate being without the internet.

Can anyone explain why the first packet is to the default gateway and not the DNS server?

I have a client machine set up
IP 192.168.1.2
default gateway 192.168.1.1
Primary DNS server 192.168.1.53

What confuses me, is when I clear the NetBIOS and DNS cache, and then try to ping another computer on my network by name,
eg 'ping computer2'

The first packet sent is a DNS packet, requesting the IP of computer2.mydomain.com
But it is sent to the default gateway

The next packet is the same but sent to the IP I have said is the DNS server, this the packet I expected to see first.

Can anyone explain why the first packet is to the default gateway and not the DNS server?

Hope that is the only required information. If you think you can answer, with more information, just ask.

My desktop computer was not connecting to the internet even though there was a connection. I ran a diagnostic test and it said that my default IP gateway, DCHP server and DNS server all failed. I don't know how to fix this problem so I did several things. I did an ipconfig release/renew in the cmd promt, I manually typed in my ip address, subnet mask and default gateway and i erased and added the same wireless connection and still nothing happened. Then I logged into my router on another computer and changed the data encryption from WPA to WEP so I can get on the internet with my laptop since my laptop did not support WPA encryption and walla I was able to connect to the internet on my desktop. I am not sure how changing the encryption from WPA to WEP has anything to do with a failure from my DNS and DCHP server and default IP gaeway. Can someone explain so I can understand this?

Hey,

So I'm somewhat of an idiot when it comes to computers, and I'm having quite a hard time here.

I currently have 3 laptops running on a D-Link DIR-615 wireless router.

2 of them are running fine, but the 3rd one can't connect to the Internet. Well, sometimes it will for a few seconds, but most of the time, it will time out, and Internet's always dropped.

When I ran a Intel PROset/Wireless Manual Diagnostic, all the test pass except for the Ping Test. Sometimes, it will say "Response: Default Gateway, No Response: DHCP server", although most of the times, both have no response.

Here's the interesting thing: I have the laptop for about 6 weeks now. At the beginning, it worked perfectly well. After 4 weeks, Internet kept crashing. Did a system restore, and Internet worked for a few days ...then, out of the blue, started crashing again, and now I can't connect ever (even though I always show a strong signal reception on my icon).

I have no idea what to do here. I've been going through forums, tried the following:

- Changing wireless channel
- TCP/IP stack repair options
- Calling Dell (what a joke that was...)

I just don't understand why one laptop doesn't connect (even though it did 3 weeks ago without problem) and the 2 other ones work great ...my roomates are getting tired of me borrowing their laptops, so I need to figure this out!

Is yours farther from the router than the others? Have you installed the newest driver for the wireless adaptor?

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again.

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

Hello, I am having a somewhat bizarre, extremely frustrating issue. I can connect to the internet via wireless just fine, and everything will be hunky-dory for a while. After a while, however (this varies anywhere from a day to a week), there will be a small hiccup on the connection, and then something fails in the Acquiring Network Address stage. My computers will get an IP, but they will not get the default gateway or DNS server.

I say computers because this happens on both my PC and laptop. This issue does NOT, however, occur for anyone else in the household.

I have tried a plethora of fixes, from simple computer reboots to fiddling with all sorts of settings, and nothing works to reestablish the connection. My father has also tried fixing it, to no avail. I have to go and reset my router, which also interrupts TV service, because it is through AT&T U-Verse. Needless to say, this does not make other people in the household very happy, and I really shouldn't have to be resetting my router every couple of days like that.

My PC uses a Netgear WG111v3 adapter and is Windows XP. My laptop has on-board Wifi and is Windows XP Professional. I am not sure why I am the only person in the household that experiences this issue. Could certain programs like AIM be causing problems?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I have a small network with a multi-homed server. The 1st NIC on the server has an IP address of 192.168.2.1 and the default gateway was set to 192.168.2.7. The Second NIC card has an IP of 10.0.2.7 and no default gateway given. The client PC's are configured for DHCP, and when they log in, are successfully given an IP address and the default gateway I assigned on the first card.
However, here is where my problem lies:
The server can ping both cards
The clients can only ping the 1st card.
Neither the Server or clients can ping the default gateway.

I have RIP installed, and IP Forwarding marked, so I can't understand why the default gateway is not working.

Anyone know anything on this?

A:{Solved} - Unable to Ping Default Gateway on Multi-homed Server

Greetings

Ok... since you have not given all the information, let me make a guess at what it is:

192.168.2.7 = IP address of a router to the rest of the world
10.0.2.x = Internal network

Ok... here is the problem:

You have given the client's the IP address of the router as their router... however, it is NOT on their network.

This is what you need to do:

Change the default gateway settings on the client's machines to the IP address 10.0.2.7 (and add the 198.168.2.1 address as the default gateway on the server).

So... this is how the routing works. I am on a client machine, and I want to talk to the world. I send my packet to my Default gateway (the server). The server then routes it from itself (on the 10.x.x.x network) to that network card's default gateway (the NIC on the 192.168.x.x network). It then goes from that NIC to that NIC's default gateway, 192.168.2.7, and out to the world.

I hope this helps

Hey,

Before continuing, this is a thread that I currently have going, if you want extra details on what's been going on. I'll try to explain it quickly here:

My laptop won't connect to wireless Internet. Doesn't matter where I am, so it's not a router problem.
I've tried many things (can be seen on the other thread), and still can't get wireless Internet connection.

Before I go any further, I'm not great with computers, so any instructions, please, eaassyyy!

Now the weird thing is, when I'm in Safe Mode with networking, Internet seems to be working fine!
As you can see in the title, my Ping test is showing something is wrong.

I have no idea what to do here. I've been going through forums, tried the following:

- Changing wireless channel
- TCP/IP stack repair options
- Calling Dell (what a joke that was...)
- ran an ipconfig /all (see on the other thread through my forum link)
- removed Mcafee (using Windows Essentials), and when I did that, Internet worked for 5-10mins then crashed again.
- checked the Mac filtering settings on my router settings

Also, my computer crashed the other day (got a blue screen, shut itself down). I posted the details in the thread.

Finally, my great friend the moderator Etaf asked me to post this to see if I have a problem that this forum could help me with ... I read the 1st post, here is the mentioned information (I couldn't do #3 because I run on 64-bit):

Hi,
I have been having problems with internet in new flat for some time!
It connects to the wireless box and has full signal but an exclamation mark is present
I have run some tests and the IPv4 and IPv6 say they have no internet access
I also run a full test and everything passed except the ping test which failed and it said:
no response:default gateway
response: dhcp server

it suggested disabling security firewall but i'm not sure if that's the correct thing to do or even how to do that!
Any help would be much appreciated
Many thanks
Amy

Ok,

I have a home network set up as foillows:

Westell 327 Versalink DSL Modem/Router bringing in my DSL internet. That is connected to a linksys 10/100 24 port switch.
I have 5 desktops connected to the switch via ethernet.

I also have an ethernet cable run from the switch to my X-box 360.

I have a linksys WRT54-G wireless router, that I want to use to split the ethernet cable that runs to my xbox out to the ports on my linksys router.

Question is: What is the proper set up on network equipment to run all this effectively?
What is the configuration settings on the linksys router?
Thanks

A:Need help configuring Linksys router/gateway

Depends on what you want. If you want a 2nd NAT layer to protect the devices connected to the second router then cascade them (LAN port of 1st router to WAN of 2nd). If you want everything to be on one LAN the following is good and proven.

JohnWill's procedure for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

Hi. How is everyone? I am having trouble with my wireless connection. I am using a D-link wireless card and a D-link modem/router. My wireless internet connection drops out about every hour, I refresh my browser, press reconnect to MSN Messenger and it is all good again. But every so often I drops out and won't reconnect, I need to restart the computer to get it connected again. When it does this, I press troubleshoot on messenger and it gives a message " Default gateway - your gateway appears to be offline ". Any ideas why this is happening? Thanks for your replies.

Hello, I have read a few similar posts and the resolutions but it doesn't appear to be working for me. Any help is appreciated. I apologize if I am leaving out any important info.

I'm running a Windows XP PC, wired to a Verizon FIOS modem/router, model MI424WR. I have a second computer connected via wire to this and a third computer connected wirelessly. As of 2 hours ago and for months, all 3 machines have worked fine.

My PC froze while playing a game and I reset it. This is not common but it has happened before without issue upon start up. However this time I received a limited/no connectivity message. When repair was attempted it didn't work because "the network did not assign a network address to the computer". The 2nd and 3rd PC work fine though.

Back on my first PC, when I view the details there is a physical address, IP address, and subnet mask, BUT there is no Default Gateway, DNS Server, or WINS Server.

I have tried the other suggestions I read about RESET TCP/IP stack and RESET WINSOCK entries then restarting my machine but neither of these worked.

Under device manager my NVIDEA nForce networking adapter says it is working properly and there isn't any red X or yellow indicators.

The only weird thing I saw which i have not seen discussed here is when I run IPCONFIG /ALL: It says IP Routing enabled: NO and WINS Proxy enabled: NO.

Thank you in advance for any help and please let me know if you need some additional information.

I have a child domain server03 [branchoffice.welber.com], that is part of a parent domain server02 [welber.com], right now the main DNS server is on the parent domain server02 and server03 uses this as it's DNS server.

How can I setup a Enterpise wide compatible DNS server on server03 so that if the link is cut between server03 and server02, all local users will continue to be able to authenitcate properly with server03, that this will not interfere with operations when server02 and server03 are connected.

I guess I would list the first DNS server on server03 as server02 leaving as it is, then set the 2nd dns server to server03 once it's setup correctly.

Thanks for your help.

I am working on a Gateway for a freind. By the way I agree with you all Gateway sucks. Everything in the pc is integrated. It has 128mb of ram and I am unsure what the proccessor is but it is a Pentium 3. The Modem and sound has stopped working. The pc was sent to Gateway and they claim lightning hit it and it will cost $700 to fix. I could by a new non integrated system for that. What can I do to fix it? Gateway is no help. I tried a different modem but it will only detect it on the parrellel port ( it is a internal modem).

Thanks

A:Gateway troubles

If it has an integrated onboard modem like you said, try disabling it in the bios. Sometimes the bad modem circuit can cause your sound to mess up even if it is not.

Gateways can be a pain, but so can any other computer. Anybody worked on those DaimlerChrysler employee comptuters yet? They are junk. They even use one of those acr/amr modems. I have fixed 3 already and the problem with all of them was the crappy modem. the modems took a crap and cause the computer to not have sound.

See if you buy a computer from best buy at least, they will take care of it even if you tell them it got hit by lightning.

Hi, my name is Anthony and I've been having a problem with my laptop since last Thursday. I was in the middle of using Photoshop, and not connected to the Internet, when all of a sudden my screen froze and it then displayed that dreaded blue screen everyone hates. After this happened, I rebooted my computer and clicked on the option to go back to the last known good configuration. After this happened, it did a check of what was wrong and displayed a list of unreadable files in the registry. It was a long list. When I rebooted again, I was shocked to see that there was now a black screen that said "Operating System Not Found", but I guess that's what's to be expected after those many unreadable files in the registry.

Well anyway, I then did a search online that recommended getting out my Windows XP installation CD. The only problem with this is that my laptop has trouble reading certain disks, so it wouldn't read the original Windows installation CD. So what I did was burned a new copy at work. When I put the CD into the computer, it would start loading up some of the Windows files. After doing this a few times, each time it would never completely finish to the point of repairing the Operating System. Sometimes now if I even try to put the copy of the installation CD in, the drive won't seem to read it fast enough to get me to the "Windows Setup" screen.

I then became worried that my Hard drive may be the problem. I read that if t... Read more

First i would like to say hello to seven forums members.

Ive recently purchased a gateway LT21 netbook, it came loaded with Win 7 Starter. everything was working great. but after i upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate, 3 drivers would not work properly on the machine.

the copy of ultimate is geniune non OEM specific.

the first driver is the WLAN driver, Atheros AR5B95. the card sometimes see's networks but after 10-20 minutes it disconnects and doesnt see any networks anymore. i try enabling and disabling the card + hitting the repair button but to no avail.

sometimes i need to restart a couple times in order for the card to work.

second is the Launch Manager. all shortcut buttons are working except for the FN+F2 which turns the wireless card on and off.

the 3rd driver is the synaptics driver. i see no options is its configurations except for the left and right button.

oh yes, dare i mention that i formatted the entire HD for a clean installation and i ignorantly deleted the recovery partition.... and now gateway wont send me a recovery CD unless its to my old address (the one i got it shipped to) and currently im overseas....

please yelp

A:Where can i pay for on-line help with configuring FTP server

we do not provide paid for support nor do we recommend people for this activity.
You will need to look locally for a company that does provide this service.

I will close the thread , if you want any online free support here - please start a new thread - in the web design forum.
We can only provide support via questions and answers in the forum and will not allow
Skype, email , or any other form of direct support.

Also note; Most domestic broadband will not allow you to host a website , because of the demand on the network.
You would need a business ISP connection , or pay for webhosting

Hello Everyone,
I am new to ATA myself and I am in the process of setting up the all the needed components to get the ATA implemented.
I plan to setup the ATA server and ATA Gateway on the same server.
Further to this the DC's, ATA Server and ATA gateway will be all on the same switch.
I want to mirror the ports trunking with the DC servers to the port where the server running the ATA server and ATA Gateway resides in.

Q1: Is this OK to do or should the ATA Gateway be installed on a separate server?

Q2: If I install the ATA Gateway and ATA server on separate servers can all the servers be on the same switch. (DC's, ATA Gateway and ATA Server)
Thank you,

Being fed up with the software router I was running I set up a netgear RP114 cable/DSL router. Connection to the net is fine, the problem is, before I used to have a webserver as the router machine. Now it sits behind the router. I set up port forwarding for port 80 to point to the internal IP address of the machine (running http:// on the internal network IP reveals the webpage so that is working ).

When I put my public ip address into a web browser (after http://) then I get the login screen for the router for web-based configuration. and not the web-server. Also, other services that I set up (telnet, ssh) didn't work.

Any ideas?

A:Port forwarding and configuring a web-server behind a router.

Couldn't find a RP114 on the Netgear site. Are you using a RP614 or a FR114P?
In either case you need to change the port used for remote management (Netgear default this to 8080 in many of their routers).

From a Netgear user manual (note the last sentence) "Web browser access normally uses the standard HTTP service port 80. For greater security, you can change the remote management web interface to a custom port by entering that number in the box provided. Choose a number between 1024 and 65535, but do not use the number of any common service port. The default is 8080, which is a common alternate for HTTP."

Hi, I have two computers connected by a router, however I cant get the router working properly. One computer is running server 2003 and the other, XP.

I understand that it is possible to configure the server to act as a router. Does this mean that I can plug my other computer, via cable, directly into the server? If so, could anyone give me some advice on how to go about doing this?

A:Configuring a windows 2003 server as a router

You can do this if you have 2 NIC's on the server, one connected to the internet and one connected to the the other PC, then share your internet connection. I would strongly advise that you have some sort of protection in place, like ISA Server or similar, if you do this because your server will now be directly connected to the internet making it more vulnerable to hacks, attacks, and viruses.

First of all... I have played with renaming folders a bit to try to get this to work correctly... so if the steps I describe don't make perfect sense for my results, I'm sorry. I expect those who are able to help me will know what's going on regardless.

I followed the article... simple instructions to create a default user profile (profile template username was "Create"). I then created several new profiles based on the new custom default profile. I think what I did with renaming folders was logged in as each new user and had to change "Create's Documents" to "My Documents". But when I browse someone else's profile in "Documents and Settings", their my documents folder is called "Create's Documents". But when I log in as that user, it is "My Documents". I hope you follow.

How do I get it to act like it is supposed to? I need to get rid of the traces of this user "Create" and replace them with the respective usernames. "Create" has to be stored in the registry and/or in the default user profile's directory somewhere. How do I get rid of it? I should have named it something other than "create" so I could more easily search the registry.

I don't want to have to delete all these user accounts and restore the original default profile and create new ones and set them all up individually. Besi... Read more

Please describe your network. Is the problem with ethernet or Wi-Fi or both?

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.
