Lenovo X201 RAM upgrade

Q: Lenovo X201 RAM upgrade

I own a X201 laptop (i5 M580 processor model) with 4gb ram. Lately, I witness an annoying lagging, due to an extensive memory usage (task manager shows 95% utilization). I wish to upgrade the memory to 8gb, by adding additional 4gb stick. According to some of the sources I have reviewed, I need SODIMM modules DDR3-8500 (DDR3-1066) RAM type. I have found some options: 4GB Crucial 2RX8 PC3-8500S Memory SODIMM Laptop DDR3 1066Mhz RAM CL7 1.5V 8500Samsung 4GB PC3-8500S DDR3-1066 MHz 204pin notebook SODIMM Laptop MemoryWould those fit my machine? I wondering because I am not sure that 8500 and 8500S are the same. Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Dear all,
I am encountering strange behaviour from my newly purchased NB from Lenovo.
Every morning when I first start my nb will enter into BSOD screen during start up, but once I restart it the system become very stable no matter how many time I restart or boot the system for rest of the day.

Could someone help me on the problem? If it is hardware problem I would better get back to vendor with in this month.

hi, i just purchased new RAMs for my X201 previously it had 2GB DDR3 1066Mhz PC3-8500 SO-DIMM Memory ( Samsung ) i purchased Kingston 2x 4GB DDR3 1333Mhz  PC3-10600 SO-DIMM Memory . i installed new RAMs but windows ( also ubuntu with dual-boot ) didnt start. i tried each rams also each slots. when i install both of the 2 rams together, OS doesnt boot, just freezes while booting ( for windows 7 it freezes when it says " windows is starting " , in ubuntu it cant boot, instead it restarts again and again ) when i try just one 4gb ram for 1 slot , it is giving Blue Screen Of Death error at boot screen ( in windows 7 when we see colored booting window flag it freezes for a second then blue screen )  after all of these , i uninstalled my old laptops 1066 mhz 2GB ram ( same with the previous ram of x201 ) and installed it into x201. it worked.  so slots dont have any problem.. it seems rams having issue. My X201 Type number is : 3626-FBG Kingston RAMs  details : on cover it written: KVR13S9S8/44GB PC3-10600 CL9 204-Pin SODIMM207767C2C20000006549306004 Any idea why is it happening?

Hi,one reason of issue might be the frequencies of new RAM sticks and CPU i5-520M in your laptop. That processor supports DDR3-800/1066 memory types only. Who knows how SPD feature on the stick regulates the work on lower frequency. Another reasons might be the RAM sticks CAS latency and timings. There is a chance the new memory is too fast for x201. Look at the such parameters of Samsung stick (in CPU-Z, for example).

I have a Lenovo X201.
It keeps on turning off.

I cleaned the fan as thoroughly as I could.
I didn't take apart - but the inside looks 95% cleaner than before.
Still problem.

Tonight I spent a few hours taking apart, and applying CPU thermal paste.
On youtube I saw one guy spread all over. And another guy just put a tiny blob.

So I put on a tiny blob. Problem still there.
DAMN!

Should I have spread all over?

What else could be causing the turning off?
When it turns off, it gets hot underneath.
I wouldn't say it was extremely hot - but definitely hot.

Thanks.

Greetings everyone: I have a Lenovo x201.  It originally uses Windows 7 Pro. I had upgrated it to Windows 10 but felt it was too clunky.  I utilized the system restore windows that comes on when you boot up the laptop.   After the reformat I wanted to check to see if I could preform a system reformat again but I don't see the system restore window anymore upon bootup.  I did press the ThinkVantage  button upon boot but nothing.   I pressed F11 but nothing.  I did check to see if the partition is present and it is.  I am not sure what the next step is. ThanksMario

Hi All, As the title states, my x201 (windows 7 professional upgraded to windows 10) encountered this error after I plugged in an old SD card via USB to look at some old pictures. My system froze up and now I cannot access anything. It gets to "Preparing Automatic Repair," then "Diagnosing your PC," After that I see the error on a blue screen.  I have tried accessing safemode before a bootup (F8), but that just leaves me with the "key is stuck" error.  Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

I have started to experience frequent crashes (freezes and sometime BSOD) with my x201. Nothing gets written to my minidump directory. I am unable to get the system to write to a memory.dmp file using the posted instructions.
The most frequent error message I get is:
The instruction at 0x00000000774CCB98 reference memory at 0x00000000719710B8. The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of 0xc000000e.

I ran memtest86 through 10 cycles with no errors. I am attaching the compressed output from the windows_NT6. As well as the perfmon report. As you will see I've disabled Bluetooth devices since the drivers weren't loading.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many of us on the forums actually do not recommend automated optimization tools for Windows 7. Windows 7 does a much better job of handling its own optimization than its predecessors did. We especially do not recommend registry cleaning as an "optimization" step because automated registry cleaning causes more harm to the registry than it actually repairs.

In the future, if you need help optimizing Windows 7, please post a thread in Performance & Maintenance - Windows 7 Forums or follow the tutorial enclosed in that forum to Optimize Windows 7.
To repair the damage done by the possible use of TuneUpUtilities, you will most likely need to do a Windows 7 Repair Install or revert to the factory system image after backing up any important data. However, you can try running SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker up to three times to fix all errors. Post back if it continues to show errors after a fourth run or if the first run comes back with no integrity violations.

A:want to upgrade thinkpad x201 ram?

Max supported by this serie is 2x 4GB RAM, a 8GB module will not work.

You'd need SODIMM modules DDR3-8500 (DDR3-1066) or DDR-10600 (DDR3-1333). DDR3-12800 will most probably not work (I never managed to get one working in mines)

Stick to well known brands like:

Samsung
Elpida
Kingston (but avoid the "Value RAM" series)
Hynix
Crucial
Corsair (but avoid the "Value Select" series)

Hi,there is a lot matrices are installed into x201t. Models also depend of the backlight type - LED or CCFL. I'm not sure whether any supported matrices models are compatible with your laptop. Also there are different LCD cable assembly and LCD rear cover assembly depending of the backlight type.To ensure what matrice you have and what's compatible check out on Lenovo' site parts list of your laptop by its [laptop] serial number. Support site doesn't answer a question by MTM only.I think it's impossible to fit non touch matrice into the tablet because of the different size (width). Compare the width of x201 and x201t.

UPD
Service parts DB says your laptop has 12.1-in. WXGA LCD panel, LED backlight (300-nit LCD), FRU 45N6092 or 45N5388.

Hello team! I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X201 that I have owned for about 6 years now. It has had it high points and low points. Just recently I decided to give it a factory reset to try and improve the efficiency of the machine. It is now operating almost like a brand new machine except I'm having some issues connecting to any sort of wireless connection. The computer is running on Windows 10 and it does show me all of the wireless signals around my vicinity. However, I have not been able to connect to any of the signals. When I use an ethernet cable I am able to connect no problem.  At first I thought maybe it needed to update some drivers or windows 10 software updates. I went ahead and did so, but it gave me no results. I currently have a Spectrum router at home which always gives me the "unable to connect" message. I tried connecting to other wireless signals at different locations utilizing different routers and got the exact same message. At this point, I'm not sure what else to do. Any help towards this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

Hello everyone, I have a X201s notebook - which is a very decent one with i7, 8GB and 256GB Samsung PM800 SSD. I have been running on 8GB since day one in 2010 when I got it. Now I need more RAM and tried to upgrade to 16Gb but the 8GB sticks I bought froM GEIL or G.Skill just does not do. I have read that Corsair produce similar results. The BIOS does recognise the RAM and show it as 16GB, however Windows 7 stops booting where the graphical part should appear (the flying balls), so does Windows 8 when I try to install it. No MS OS can be installed either.Windows Memory Check runs but VERY slow. I would say it would take a month for it to complete. Tried both BIOS 1.36 and 1.38. Question to Lenovo - any plans to support 16Gb for X201?  So far I seen people tested GEIL, G.Skill, OWC, Corsair - neither of them had any luck. Thanks. Question to all - anyone got it running with 16GB?

After several minutes into the update I got the message that the ISD driver must be uninstalled! Why it couldn't tell me that before when checking my system for the update is a MS glitch I think. I stopped the update.

This driver is for the touch screen in tablet mode I think so will that facility not work in Win 10 or will there be a Win 10 ISD driver?

I cannot find out from the Lenovo support sites but from Googling 'Win 10 update for ISD driver' I got the Lenovo page link http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds041384 which I don't understand.

Can anyone please enlighten me on this matter - thanks.

I've created a new partition on the harddrive, and I would like to install Windows on that new partition, so there are 2 Windows installations on 2 different partitions, and then transfer the data between the partitions, and install the programs over time, and then finally delete the old installation, when I've finished setting up the new installation with programs and data. My questions is now:1. Is it possible to do that, and how do I do it?2. I want to do a original Windows OEM installation, with the Lenovo drivers and all that, but what do I need to do that?3. Will the product key on the computer work on both installations at the same time, when they are on 2 different partitions, but on the same computer? Best regards:Aksel Christoffersen

Is it difficult to replace the screen latch on an X201 tablet?  I've worked on T series laptops replacing lcds and drives and the like.  Thanks for any info!

A:X201 replacement latch on X201 tablet?

Welcome to the forum!

Well, it's not that difficult but you need to disassemble a lot of parts. This is fairly easy to do if you closely follow the instructions of Lenovo's Hardware Maintenance Manual, which you can download from here: click me!

Hi This morning my X201 has started misbehaving and I think it's a problem with the LCD cable (in particular the part that connects to the Hall Switch). Symptoms: - very, very faint Thinkpad logo when switching on, after which the screen is blank- Bluetooth and Wireless lights illuminate but nothing else- Window startup chime plays - If I then start to close the laptop, when I get to about 30 degrees away from it being fully folded the other lights come on and the screen displays correctly. - If I start to reopen the laptop it will go into suspend mode. I've read this post and I think, based on the symptoms, the problem isn't with the Hall switch itself but the cable that connects it to the motherboard.  However I'm not sure that the replacement part cited in that post (44C9991) is the correct one for my model. My product number is 3680-VV8 which I can't find when searching on the Lenovo site and only rarely shows up in searches elsewhere (e.g. here).  I've checked this page (and the equivalent for the WXGA+ screen) and 44C9991 is the only part that's compatible with any of the 3680- series, so it's likely that it will work but I'd like to know for sure before I order a replacement.  (I'm not sure what the -CTO suffix means on product numbers by the way - could that mean "all suffixes"?) Any advice welcome e.g. - how to confirm the part for this model number- whether, based on the symptoms, it could be anything other... I have a Lenovo x201 laptop, It has been sent back for repairs from employee. At first, the fan seemed to be not working causing overheating. I then replaced the fan however the laptop kept shutting down as soon as sign in screen showed up.I think there is a FAN issue where it doesn't run because of low computer usage causing the laptop to crash.I have found a workaround which is a weird way.So if I REMOVE the battery from the back and PLUG in the adapter, the laptop works just fine. I have to care to not unplug the cord accidentally. When I start the laptop + signin everything works fine, and I can hear the fan spinning where before, when the battery was plugged in, It used to idle causing a crash. Now if I put the battery back in. WHILE it is PLUGGED IN and on desktop screen, it SHUTS OFF in a matter of seconds.I concluded that the BATTERY causes the FAN to IDLE which in turn shuts the LAPTOP off because it is thinking the FAN is FAULTY.Now I am on a domain at the moment, so I cannot download a CPU Fan Management Program to keep the fan at a steady X%.ANY IDEAS ? Thanks in advance. Meghz

A:ThinkCentre: Stuck at Lenovo splash screen after lenovo solution bios upgrade

I would try resetting the BIOS using the jumper, or by taking out the CMOS battery, wait a minute or two, and then replace it and try booting up. See page 73 of the Hardware Maintenance Manaul linked below for location of the Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper (# 20) https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/thinkcentre_pdf/m83m93p_hmm.pdf Clearing the CMOS (BIOS)1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer. Then, disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the computer. 2. Remove the computer cover. 3. Locate the Clear CMOS /Recovery jumper on the system board. 4. Move the jumper from the standard position (pin 1 and pin 2) to the maintenance position (pin 2 and pin 3). 5. Reinstall the computer cover and connect the power cord. 6. Turn on the computer and leave it on for approximately 10 seconds. Then, turn off the computer by holding the power switch for approximately five seconds. 7. Repeat step 1 through step 2. 8. Move the Clear CMOS /Recovery jumper back to the standard position (pin 1 and pin 2). 9. Reinstall the computer cover and connect the power cord. Good Luck,

Hi everyone, I'd like to introduce myself with my very first post in this community. So, I'd like to upgrade my Lenovo B590 (I know it's an old one ).Currently my specs are: - Intel Celeron 1005M 1,90GHz; 8 Gb DDR3 Ram (which i perfectly upgraded); 450 Gb HDD and Windows 10 - 64x and this mainboard Socket 988B rPGA (G2 if I am correct). Thanks to this forum an other posts like this one: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-B-and-G-Series-Notebooks/B590-Processor-Upgrade/td-p/1948989 I could figure out more like for e.g. which CPU's are compatible. So my question is I actually found on ebay an Intel Core i5 Mobile CPU Socket G2 PGA 988 with the following FRU 40W0492, but on the Lenovo Maintenance Manual the FRU of the i5 is completey different (102001067). So is my laptop with this CPU incompatible 100%? Aren't FRU numbers supposed to have 7 numbers with letters? Or am I wrong? Thank you in advance and sorry for my english I haven't talked it for 3 years or so.

I have a X201 thinkpad that I am trying to update a bit.  I purchased a new samsung evo 860 500gb ssd drive.  I tried to put fresh install of win 10 onto it (boot from usb stick) but was getting media test failure errors and constant restart loop. I took the ssd out and put it into my even more ancient X61s and managed to load windows onto the drive with no problems.  The ssd runs fine in the X61s.  On the X201 I updated the bios to the latest version (1.40).  I tried to put the ssd into the computer but it just keeps loading the window symbol, saying preparing to repair and then it reboots.  What am I missing here?  I compared the bios settings on the 2 computers and they looked the same for most options? Thanks for any help Unrelated question, should I update bios of X61s?  What would be most recent version?

Hi All, Have one of these PSUs (20Vdc round connector), and it has stopped working, and the module rattles when shaken. Can anyone advise how to access, so I can see if simple fix, or need to purchase a replacement... Doesn't appear to be any obvious access (screws under voltage label, etc.)  Thanks, Dave

When booting my x201 I get fan error on screen. If I press escape it continues to boot to windows but begins to get quite hot quickly. What component needs to be replaced and how difficult is it?

A:x201 fan error

This forum is for the tablet, not the notebook.  It is the fan. (running too slowly).  You need to remove the motherboard to get at it.  The fan is mounted on the underside.
