Processor Dilemma

Q: Processor Dilemma

Hi,

Having thought hard buying a new PC to upgrade my existing one I have come to two choices. Each one has exactly the same spec apart from the processors. One is an Athlon 2200+ and the other is Pentium 4 2.2Ghz. Both have 512mb of DDR memory.

The thing is is that I've heard the athlon 2200+ performs much better than the pentium 2.2 even though it runs roughly at 1.8Ghz. I even seen the 2.2 Pentium being compared with the Athlon 2000+ which makes me think that the 2200+ is far better than 2.2.

Help I'm a bit confused about all this!!!!!

I was hoping if anyone could help me decide which is the better one and to tell me if I'm talkin rubbish or not!

Thanks
John

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What should be the appropriate specifications regarding software and processing. I am not that into the display, i just need smooth running and processing of heavy programmes and files. I dont care abt the wt. But it should not heat up.

Most entry level laptops is perfect for that. Provided it's just basic everyday normal processing. If your talking about some specific software, like CAD or 3D CAD.....then that's some pretty intensive software that requires some pretty stout hardware.

Starboy said:

What does that mean?

Starboy said:

All laptops will heat up....some more than others. That's because of the proximity of all the hardware enclosed into a confined space. Other then adding some external cooling pads...that can't be helped.

Most importantly.....what's your budget?

My brother wants to upgrade from his x2 5000+ (he has m2ne mobo, 2 gigs ddr2) to a newer AMD processor. His budget is tight, so he wants to make sure that he buys the right one. His choices are:

Ahlon II x4 635/640
Phenom II x4 945

Obviously it would be real good if Athlon II X4 gave good money to performance ratio (decent compression/encoding/gaming performance), rather than Phenom II X4, as the series is at least 2000 Rupees costlier !

Any suggestions guys ?

A:Processor upgrade dilemma

The main difference between Athlon II and Phenom II is Athlon II lacks L3 cache. This article from Tom's hardware should help in your decision and weighing whether the extra cost is worth it: Athlon II Or Phenom II: Does Your CPU Need L3 Cache? : L3 Cache: How Important Is It To AMD?

If you're going for saving the most money, then the Athlon II 640 would be the better choice.

I have a computer with an Intel D845EBG2 motherboard, and an Intel 2.53 Ghz Socket 478 CPU. Recently I was trying to put a piece of hardware in, and I accidentally broke a wire on the CPU fan. I went online to check where I could find a replacement fan, and when I found the same exact fan and heatsink that I currently have, I noticed it said that the fan and heatsink was designed for CPU's up to 2 Ghz. Someone gave me this computer, so I didn't buy it or build it myself. Since I'm running a 2.53 Ghz CPU, I was wondering if in some way the CPU could be damaged because of this. Is it safe to buy the same fan and heatsink or will buying a better one that supports the CPU's speed better, or has the damage been done already? Any help will be appreciated.

hey, i have found these two ram sets, ?3 apart, and the only difference i see is the ram timings, and i cannot for the likes of me choose which one?
which one should i go for?
Dom

A:RAM Dilemma

The first one with better timings - for only 3 squid extra, it's an easy choice

Basically they are exactly the same RAM modules, except the CL7's are 'better binned' (higher individual quality) than their CL9 counterparts. Modules that can't tolerate tighter timings / voltages are sold as the 'slower' sets.

My buddies seems well enough. I have tried many things, including repairing connection, but when i attempt to it say: "Windows could not finish repairing this problem because the following action cannot be completed: TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection." I have spent maining hours in agonising frustration and would appreciate any input on my situation!

A:tcp/ip dilemma

How did you setup the two machines IP addresses? If you let Windows do it, try this.

Setup the machine as follows:

PC1:
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

PC2:
IP Address: 192.168.0.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Leave the other settings blank. See if that allows you to connect.

Hi, everybody. Please excuse my lack of knowledge on the subject I am asking about. As far as I know, you are not able to set up WPA encryption on your laptop in a wifi hotspot(unless of course the owner tells you the router's MAC address and passphrase). However, I was wondering what exactly the WPA does. I read that it supposedly encrypts all the so-called "data" that you send out(specifically for web browsing, downloading, etc.), and makes anyone trying to connect to your computer(and therefore your network) need to input the correct passphrase. If this is the case, isn't there some sort of software that could also encrypt your outbound data in the same way on a hotspot, but without actually setting up an encrypted network between your computer and a router(or access point)? I am guessing that if there is, then it would probably only encrypt outbound "data", and not protect you from people trying to access your computer. I have read about VPNs, TOR, etc., but as far as I can understand, these only try to mask your IP/identity. They also say that they "tunnel data," but doesn't all web traffic have to make "hops" anyway? So how would they "tunnel data," unless that company had a physical line running straight from your computer to their server? I welcome any number of responses on this subject, and I would appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thank you very much!

Guys, just days ago I purchased all the components needed to make a gaming rig.Well, most of the components[except my PSU] have been delivered. As I was talking to the guy who is going to assemble my CPU,he gave me a suggestion to use my old HDD with the new one,as it would give me and my family more space to put in new stuff in the new HDD.Well,I liked the idea and told him we would go through with it,but then, many questions popped in my mind as soon as I had finished my conversation with him.Well, first let me give you the specs:-
1)OLD HDD:-Western Digital Caviar Green-WD10EZRX-00D8PB0[ASIN number,I guess] and here is the link http://www.amazon.in/WD-Caviar-Desktop-Internal-WD10EZRX/dp/B00769WETS. Reason,I provided you guys the ASIN number is because when I saw the price of this HDD now,it is 12K bucks....I don't believe I paid that much amount in 2011-12,so check the ASIN number that i got in my devices list in the control panel.
NEW HDD:-Toshiba 1 TB 7200 RPM HDD.Link:-http://www.amazon.in/Toshiba-Internal-Hard-Drive-DT01ACA100/dp/B00A0KXK7U?_encoding=UTF8&keywords=1tb%20hdd%20toshiba&linkCode=sl1&linkId=b476891eb75940ea155299da093c4c89&qid=1481107684&ref_=as_li_ss_tl&ref_=sr_1_3&sr=8-3&tag=curse0d-21.
Now,here are my queries:-
1)I am intending to install win 10 pro 64 bit version[in my new HDD],will it somehow clash with the win7 OS in my harddisk.
2)I just do not have applications installed in the C drive, but also in other drives.Eve... Read more

A:Dilemma of using old HDD in new rig..

3)As the drive is like 3-4 years old[already reached its expectancy],would it be wise to have all the data stored in it?Click to expand...

Any data you want to keep, you make backups. If this is the ONLY copy of said data, you should expect to lose it at some point. ALL drives fail; it is only a question of when the drive failes.
4)As the old HDD is of Western Digital caviar series and the new one is of Toshiba, will they clash with each other?Click to expand...

No.
Here is what I would do;
1 First and foremost, make at least two copies of whatever data you want to keep. Do this on separate media; ie two external drives, two flash drives, NAS, whatever.
2 Build the system and install just your new drive. Do the windows install, updates, drivers, etc, etc.
3 Once completely finished with the windows install, shutdown and install the old drive. Windows will assign the next available drive letter to your old drive ie E, F, whatever.
4 As for access to your old disk, you can edit permissions to make it unavailable to some users.

Your link to your drive on amazon does not work.

Q: Dilemma

Split from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/393442/windows-xp-freezes-at-mupsys-in-safe-modeno-administrator-passowrd/ - Hamluis.

Hello Everybody
An old XP PC we were using as a Minecraft server was having a printer driver installed when Windows unexpectedly rebooted. Since then it has been stuck in a boot loop. We get as far as the Windows startup screen then it reboots. In safe mode it hangs at the Mup.sys stage.
We have a Windows XP disc which we always used to use to get back to factory settings and I'm pretty sure we used it on this one when we acquired it but it tries ( I think!) to boot from CD but ends up booting from HD. It would not boot into Puppy Linux from CD so I did a Puppy boot from memory stick.
This worked up to editting the registry as described above but Windows is still stuck in the reboot loop.
I should say that I did ntfxfix on Windows partition 1 in Puppy as advised here: http://www.winhelp.us/recover-files-using-puppy-linux-page-2.html. On first reboot it did do chkdsk before the rebooting loop started again.
What else could I try?
thanks
Les

A:Dilemma

I am quite happy to do a clean Windows install if there is something in Windows I can edit with Puppy to force this. Nothing on PC I need but so far I cannot get Windows CD to run (or Puppy on Cd, that hung up as well hence memory stick used)

This is my dilemma:

A computer at work is running IE7, XP Pro, SP3. Recently Last week, IE began loading with no toolbar (file, edit, view, history, bookmarks, tools or help), therefore 'right-clicking' on the toolbar and selecting 'tools' is not an option.

Also, I cannot 'right-click' to access any functions associated with that, nor can I use any DOS commands such as Ctrl+C or Ctrl+V to copy or paste. And all drop down boxes are gone. Clicking on hyper links will not load any page in another window.

I have tried writing registry values as found in various forums, deleting other values, changing the binary code to 1 in D-Word entries to make sure that the toolbar menu is active...tried Alt, Alt+Spacebar, Alt+T, or any other combination of keys, and none of them work. PLEASE do not suggest F11 either, as we all know this just hides the address bar and then restores it.

I have tried booting into safe mode, and ran scans as well, and no infections were found.

Sadly, the workstation is equipped with an enterprise version of Nortons, which found nothing either. I have also ran both Malwarebytes and Spyware Doctor to no avail.

I tried utilizing Kelly's Korner toolbar fix exe. and this did not work.

Right-clicking ANYWHERE on the top bar, only gives me the pop-up box which has 'restore', 'maximize', 'minimize', or 'close' as options to choose from.

A tip on buying a laptop,Buy what you want now and what you might want for hardware later.Becayuse a laptop is not easily upgraded and has strict guidlines as to what you can and can't do. So if your looking to buy a laptop for gaming or video editing or just making letters and such for trips.make sure you buy a laptop that can do that now and suit your needs for the next couple years.

Hi guys just wondering if there's someone out there who can actually clear up this problem once and for all !

I bought a Coolermaster 460W extreme power plus PSU from ebuyer. They have sent me the PSU and a EU type cable to plug into my UK wall !

On the PSU it has no switches to select voltage, but it does have a sticker on saying "AC INPUT 230V ONLY"

Am I right, therefore, in presuming that if I took a UK cable and used that with the PSU it would not blow up my house and/or my newly built rig ?!

Help appreciated !

I assume and remember knowing that UK wall sockets give 230 V AC power? Therefore yes, it will work with a UK cable and will not break anything. Or then get an adapter instead of a new cable.

I have a customer of mine who is an aged farmer who lives out in the sticks.
The problem I'm having is that he lives in an area that has no broadband and no mobile internet access.
He recently purchased a new PC from me as he has to log his livestocks passports for travel purposes to and from the market. This has now moved to an on-line process hence the reason for him purchasing a PC.
So he has no choice but to use dial-up (which also disables his use of the only phone line he has)
The thing is windows updates are causing his internet connection to time out as the files are so large and this also causes his mail to seize up.

Is there any way to disable windows updates for office and windows but allow MSE to update automatically or does he have to update MSE manually each day ? (remember the poor bugger struggles to turn the PC on and for the first month I was there daily to fill in the 10 or so lines into the spread sheet and mail them, but he seems to have got the hang of it now)

Ok heres my dilemma...

I was tinkering around with Vista last night ( was drunk and bored ) And then I went to bed and don't know what the heck I did to my laptop.

Right now ALL of my dang programs are set to open in wordpad by default...I have no clue on how to fix this

Seriously this is a major issue for me

My iTunes opens up in wordpad and all i see is jibberish, same thing goes for when I want to do a system restore, play ANY of my games, open any freaking program...All i get is my programs being displayed in computer jargon in wordpad

Please I hope someone can help me out soon because I really wanted to play Counter Strike Source soon =)

Hi -

It sounds like you found an escape from the boredom!

Run a Vista system restore - choose a restore point prior to the mishap yesterday -
START | rstrui - select restore point

If you can't run the rstrui.exe file, boot into SAFEMODE and select "Safemode with Command Prompt" and execute rstrui.exe there.

Hi Guys,

Firstly I would like to apologise if this is a duplicate thread, but from what I have seen I have a kinda unique problem.

My company bought a couple of HP Pavillion dv6 1135ei notebooks preinstalled with Vista Home Premium. (Hewlett-Packard HP Pavillion dv6 Notebook PC, AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core QL-65 2.10 Ghz, 3.00 GB RAM 32 bit OS Service Pack 1) The problem is that there are some programs i need to run that will not work on Vista. (I have checked)

My first idea was to format the machine and install XP Professional. I created the Vista back-up discs, and proceeded to try install XP. Everytime the XP setup got about half way through, I would get a blue screen of death .

Tired and frustrated, I grabbed a copy of Linux Mint and formatted the PC with that but.... when I again inserted the XP Pro CD, our blue screen would reappear! So, back to square one again, and I ended up re-installing Vista Home Premium on the Notebook.

After much googling, I discovered that it might indeed be possible to dual boot, but unfortunately they only show how its done on Intel & nVidia chipsets, leaving this poor AMD in the dark. So in the end i have 145 Gb Vista Partition, a 10.6 Gb Recovery Partition and a 141 Gb Blank partition.
(When trying to install Xp on the empty partion, setup fails everytime, i do not even get to choose which parition xp should install to)

I know I have the option of running XP in a virtual box (not ideal) but I was wondering if anyon... Read more

Now I have 2 GFX cards and need to know which one is best for my needs, which is for photo editing, occasional gaming, general computer work & internet. I will keep the better card and return the other. I am not much for understanding benchmarks, etc. and most of the reviews talk about things I don't even know. Anyway, the 2 cards are:
Zotac NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB Mini
Sapphire RX 590 Nitro+ Special Edition (8GB GDDR5/PCI Express 3.0/1560MHz/2100MHz)
Or, can anyone recommend a better card in the same price range?

Appreciate all help.

On another lost-in-pawn machine on my bench now, I'm currently running SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) and - believe me, it's loaded with trash - but, while running, a RUNDLL window keeps popping up saying that it can't find cnbabe.dll. There shouldn't be a RUNDLL execute in XP, should there? If SAS doesn't find and fix this, do I just need to delete the rundll.exe file from wherever it is? Thanks!

A few weeks ago my son & I asked for assistance with removing the free McAfee that came with his new Vista laptop.

http://forums.techguy.org/general-security/678529-solved-easy-removal.html

The assistance received was right on the money, right down to the "successful removal" after completion of the extra step needed.

The free version of AVG had been previously downloaded and was installed. It was updated and a scan was run that came up clean.

Today, upon starting the computer a message came up that stated that MFC71.DLL failed to start and that AVG was not running. Windows suggested that the problem might be solved by reinstalling the program.

My son downloaded a fresh copy of AVG, to the desktop, and uninstalled the one had on the computer.

When he tried to install the new AVG he got a message that another anti-virus was already running and that he needed to un-install it, first. That's when he called me.

Not being the smartest guy on the block, I told him that, maybe, the MFC71.DLL was involved with McAfee, not AVG. Sure enough, he looked in the security section of his computer and under "Malware" it stated that McAfee Virus scan and Windows Defender were both running. After shutting off Defender that section still said it was running.

We're a bit far apart. He's in Seattle and I'm in St. Pete, FL area. I'm stumped, but that doesn't take too much.

Where do we start? I appreciate any help you can send.

Whenever I run an office program in my Administrator account, I recieve the error that that program is not installed for the current user, even though it is, because I installed it in that account. Plus, it loads nearly completely, then gives me the error. So I know it is installed, and it jst won't work.

However, in my brother's Limited XP account, it works just fine. Office will run normally, and that is that. He has never experiences the problem.

When I checked MS's website, they said to uninstall, and delete some files/folders/registry keys. I did, re-installed, and the same problem. I even went as far as to make my brother an Administrator and install it in his account. No luck. Yet, his account is still un-affected.

If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it. (I need these programs for school! )

Hi,

Im not entirely sure of the exact problem i have, so will explain as fully as possible......

I have XP (service pack 2) running on a Dell GX280.

I use this machine for music production and recently bought a Korg nanoKontrol (MIDI Controller) to use with Propellerheads Reason 4.

This device comes with no software, and is plug and play. But when i plug it in i hear the usb device audio alert, but reason doesnt seem to install the device.

When i go device manager, in the sounds and audio devices it displays as "usb audio device" when i right click and go properties it shows the correct device and displays as "functioning correctly"

But when i try to find it within Reason 4 it will not display in the available MIDI devices list. I changed this Korg Device for a Akai one, only to experience the same problem!

I have tried both devices on my laptop running vista and they both install correctly and both work within Reason 4. Just not on my XP machine.

I already have a MIDI keyboard installed and working properly on my XP machine, but cant figure out why it cant find my new MIDI device.

Im thinking it could be a midi port within XP or a registry key preventing the device installing/working correctly?!? I have also tried uninstalling the driver, only for the same thing to occur when i plug it back in. Also tried all usb ports on the back of the PC, as well as reinstalling my music software.

Any help with this matter would be much ... Read more

Sorry if this gets long, but I'm having a "What programs will this best work in?" dilemma.

Basically what I'm trying to accomplish is this: Client needs a Powerpoint presentation that will be sent to international offices. They also have a self-evaluation form to go along with said presentation. I need to find a way to connect the two so it acts somewhat like the following:

PPT: Slide 1 - Intro
PPT: Slide 2 - Information about widget. Click this link to take survey about widget. [Link then opens form.]
FORM: Section 1: Widget questionnaire. Click this link to return to presentation. [Link goes back to PPT]
REPEAT until PPT and FORM are complete.
SAVE form and email back to client

The problem I'm running into is neither Powerpoint nor Word allow linking to each other's bookmarks. Powerpoint can't make interactive data forms and Word, well, it's Word and not really great for anything but word processing.

I looked into making it all a linked and bookmarked PDF file (with no PPT animations - just images of the slides) however, we would need them to be 2 pdfs (one is the slides, the second is the form - this way only the forms get emailed back to the client) but there is no way I've found to link between bookmarks of 2 different PDF files. I'm pretty damn savvy with Acrobat, but maybe I've missed a way to do this?

So, ultimately my question is this: What is the best way/program/programs to accomplish what I need to do? I&... Read more

So I'm having a bit of an Adobe Dilemma and looking for any advice or help related to the issue.

You see, years ago I purchased Adobe Acrobat on disc from my college. This was before all the licensing fees from Adobe started. I never had an issue using their software as the license had been purchased upon purchasing the disc. Again, this was at the time.

The problem arose when I purchased a new computer. While trying to transfer my program to my new computer it is telling me that I have to once again purchase the licensing for it. This would be via the once a year payment or the monthly payment for it. Is there anyway around this? Since the license I purchased was before all of this does anyone know of a grandfather clause that would allow me to continue using the software license I had already purchased or I am cornered into paying them regardless of when my actual purchase was made?

Thanks for any help ahead of time.

Yet another computer I'm working on has a major internet problem: No matter what I set as the homepage, it continually goes to about.com or about. something and takes me to a screen 404dns.com which, of course, is adult oriented. I've tried resetting my home page, finding and deleting any 404 files on the harddrive... @$%#^&*%!!! It's one of those days... Is anyone out there familiar with this problem and what files I can maim and destroy to get rid of this nusiance? Oh, yeah: Also when I come to this site and sign in, it says "Welcome Ron the Geek" and then, when I go to the next page, it tells me I have to register... I'm about to run Spybot and let it just get rid of everything it finds and if I still have a problem, I'll run a Hijack. But if anyone is already familiar with this pest, I can use some information. Thanks!

My system is Windows XP with SP2.

When I right click on my desktop, then click "NEW", I can create a new
folder, Wordpad, Rich Text or Text documents and I can open several
programs. A photo editing program I use nearly every day is not on
the list, yet a similar program I seldom use is on the list.

On my old 98 system, all the Works 4.5 documents were on the list;
database, spreadsheet, etc. I want those on the XP list, but Customer
Service says it is not possible to add or delete anything from that
list. I have asked several different Cust. Serv. people and they all
say the same thing, but they can't tell me how those programs got
onto the list. Those two photo editing programs are ones I have added, so
they are not part of the Windows XP system that came pre-installed.
The logic (or non-logic) of it escapes me.

So the question is, can that menu (or whatever it is called) be edited?
BTW, what is it called?

I had two hard drives, both running Win 2000. C was 6.4 GB and D was 120 GB. I ran the XP CD on the C drive to load XP onto the D drive, and subsequently loaded Win XP onto the C drive as well. I configured the boot.ini file on C to boot the system to the D drive, but I would like to boot to the D drive INDEPENDENTLY of the C drive. If I was able to do that would it mess up all the references to drives in my programs.

This one is about my own computer at home: Does anyone know if there is a free utility that can recognize and eliminate the MPFexe trojan? This pain keeps coming back. I remove the exe file from my HKLM...Run folder but there's got to be some other file that receates it and puts it back. If I just knew all the registry entries this trojan makes, I could delete them all. I tried True Sword and it seemed to work but my trial is expired and I was hit again. I'll have to wait til the bank account is replenished before I can buy the thing. Any comments comparing True Sword, Registry Mechanic or other sub $50 utilities that work well?

Hello All, I've got a real mind blower on my hands. Have a PC with Vista 64 bit that boots to black screen with blinking curser. When I opened the case every component in it was engulfed in dirt so my first instinct was that something has broken down due to over-heating. Bios detects ram and hdd correctly. Attached hdd to usb adapter and was able to recover data onto an external hdd. Checked hdd power connector & all voltages are present. I was able to boot from ubuntu cd. IMO at this point I have either narrowed it down to a bad MBR or the the hard drive.. Am I thinking right? My problem is I cannot repair/reinstall Vista because I do not have a 64bit Vista install disk. Is there any other way I can attempt to repair this OS? I know in the old days with XP you could make a install disk from the files on your computer. Can you do the same with Vista Since I can access all the files when I hook this hdd up thru usb to another computer. I've got install disks for every OS except 64 bit Vista. There is a recovery partition on this hdd but since I cannot get the PC to boot I cannot access it. I think I have over-thought this thing & now I've gotten myself thougherly confused.

What is the make and model of your machine. Perhaps there is a recovery partition.

But first try booting in safe mode F8 in the boot menu select advanced options or repair your computer. At the command prompt type

OK, this one has been stumping me for months.....

I have two worksheets in a workbook. One is my worksheet which summarizes all info for all participants (the master list), the other has a few of the participants and a new field (eg column).

What I'd like to do is be able to add the field to my "master list" of all participants.

Seems easy right?

Well my master list contains over 6 thousand participants and I may want to add one or even a few new fields (or columns) for only 1 or 2 thousand of the 6 thousand.

I hope I am explaining what I am trying to do where someone can understand it.

What I've been doing is taking the unique identifier of the participants, arranging them in a column, tagging the duplicates then manually aligning the duplicate entries so that the new column was added to my "master file."
...literally takes DAYS depending on how many I have
To help me make my point, I've made a dummy workbook (saved as tab delimited text) with the two lists side by side. In the example, I want to add the column "yellow" to my master list (the longer one) for the correct participant. The unique identifier is "MR#"

Any thoughts???
Thanks in advance, I realize this isn't a very simple question.

Being accursed with a best buy gift card of ~$75, I chose to peruse their selection of CD/DVD RW, since my desktop lacks one. Unfortunately, their variety is meager; a HP 1260i and a LG GH24 are the only internals among the plethora of externals. Both have similar price, ratings, and + & - CD/DVD compatibility, which most are superfluous to my needs. The LG, however, has lightscribe, which is superfluous as well. I haven't had enough experience with either company's hardware to winnow the choice to a singularity, so hopefully you guys might know. On the other hand, should I look elsewhere if both prove to be inferior? Thanks for your consideration.

A:Internal CD/DVD RW dilemma

Good, but loaded question. I'll try to address some points.

I've never seen or heard of any DVD burner having any problems reading/writing cds. So if that was of any concern I'd dismiss that.

Not sure if HP builds their own or if they rebrand others (likely rebrand, but I don't know), but LG drives IMO are pretty decent (I actually had one die, but I've known several other people that swear by them). HP pretty much started or was a frontrunner on Lightscribe though, and I think if you plan on doing any of that having an HP drive might be better. I recently saw a video review of an older Lightscribe drive (one I have) and apparently, at least for CDs, the media you lightscribe onto makes a big difference in the quality.

$75, if either of those drives (I didn't check BB) are close to using up your gift card, maybe you should spend the money on bluray disks or something. You can buy a cheap burner from Newegg for less than $30 that will work great. Maybe spend the gift card on the lightscribe capable disks which are expensive everywhere.

Hi,

I could really use some direction on this dilemma. So I am here to explain the situation and hopefully as in the past I will receive great assistance from this forum.

I am in an area where high speed is NOT available and I am currently using Bell dial up!! I will do whatever is necessary to have any association with BELL removed from my home. Bell has instituted a version of Hotmail called Bell Mail. This is attached to my ISP with my Bell email account. I also have Windows Live Mail that I use as my mail program. Both have the same email address. The reason I use the resident email is due to the fact that I belong to a number of committees and I need to retain the email correspondence in separate folders I have created.
I was told that I cannot transfer these folders from WLM to a web based email? I can however as of today create new folders in Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo etc. I really do not want to maintain two identical email platforms! As it is now with Bell Mail all of my mail first comes into Bell Mail and then when I sign on to WLM it downloads to that program. I am constantly maintaining the two platforms! I have no idea on how to cancel the Bell Mail account?

Bottom line here is that;

What mail program would best suit my needs, Web based or resident?

Is there a way to transfer my current folders and contacts from WLM to a web based email?

What dangers are to be considered in having all of the detail stored on a web based email in the event of a crash. I know I ... Read more
